FOCUS EDITOR
In a word H
i, my name’s Adrienne and I’m an addict. There. I said it! Phew, that’s better! Oh how I’ve needed to say it for so very long. You know what? I never realised exactly how helpful these group therpay sessions could be. I’ve been an addict for quite some time, in fact most of my adult life. I can’t pick exactly when it started but maybe it was in my teens. It’s not healthy and my addictions have consequences. Vast ones. My bank manager (and possibly my marriage) has sometimes been very hurt in the process. But like Tiger Woods, I can’t be held accountable for my actions – because my addiction made me do it. I’m not proud of this addiction that has me firmly in its grasp but as all attempts to free me from its evil possession have virtually dissipated – I am now officially an addict – hook, line and sinker. My addiction is not to drugs or even substances (even though it probably costs just as much). Nope, my addiction is to shopping. Don’t laugh, it is an actual addiction and some people have to seek actual psychological treatment if they want an actual recovery. The name, I believe, is Omniomania, although I’m not sure where they came up with the term because it’s about as glamorous as a pair of gumboots. Like long nights out and the need for another hit, I can often be seen stalking my favourite stores looking for my next prey... it gives me my instant fix. I think the first time it happened was when I saw a pair of shoes in a shop, I might’ve been maybe 16 or 17, and I was in lurve. They were all patent and shiny with such a pretty bow on the top of the toe. I didn’t have the money to pay for them upfront (working as in intern earning next to nothing means a shopper has a very limited budget to work with) but I had to have them. So, instead of saving up, I put them on layby and spent the month eating tinned spaghetti for my dinner – but it was worth it, ‘cos hell did I look good in those heels! These days, my addiction hasn’t changed all that much. I don’t eat tinned spaghetti for my dinner (well, not all that often anyway) and my spending habits have only escalated as my taste for style supersedes any saviour for my credit card. Like all addictions, there is a cure but I’m just not sure I’m ready for it. Cold turkey ain’t gonna work for this lil’ shopaholic. Baby steps, people. Baby steps. What was it Imelda Marcos once said, ‘A woman can live on shoes and shoes alone’. Me? I need the frock, the bags and the cocktail ring to go with them! This month, as another Boat Show rolls around, we’ve devoted our mag to the great lifestyle Queensland has to offer – of sun, sand and sea. We’re supporting this year’s Women on Water event so we hope to see you there! You can share your own shopping addiction stories with me (shhhh...we’ll keep it between the girls!) Enjoy your month! REVIEW BOOKS
BETWEEN THE LINES
What does he really want when your husband offers to put out the rubbish or do the washing up? Comedian blogger Kerri Sackville delves into what makes the male mind tick. When My Husband Does the Dishes… by Kerri Sackville Publisher: Random House Australia Kerri Sackville’s compelling voice has seen her accrue an impressive following in a relatively short space of time. Her refreshing, hilarious, open – and let’s face it – blazingly honest posts on her blogsite have made her a popular voice among the interweb world. Her new book sums up all her wisdom – be it good or bad. When My Husband Does the Dishes... is a collection of pages that have morphed from Kerri’s successful blog, Life and Other Crises, which parodies her life juggling children, work, and a sexually over-active husband. “My book is a memoir of marriage and motherhood. I have written about the nitty gritty of what really goes on behind the closed doors of a family; what life looks like after years and years of living with the same person, and creating other, smaller people with them; the challenges of monogamy, and friendship, and of being a parent. Or, in other words, I talk a lot about my sex life and the way I’ve lost control of my children,” Kerri giggles. “When My Husband Does the Dishes… is about love in real life. It’s about what marriage looks like after three children and 150 years of togetherness. It’s about little white lies and boxer shorts on the floor and eating frankfurts for dinner every night. It’s my life. And I suspect it could be yours too.” Kerri says she wrote this book for people like her, people who can relate to her, and people who seem to find her amusing. Which, in a tragic sort of way, she is. “I am in my early forties, which means I feel about 25 on some days and 83 on others. I am a mum. I have three kids: an 11-year-old June 2011
GetIt_june11_12_books.indd 12
boy, a nine-year-old girl, and a completely insane toddler – she is also a girl, but her insanity takes precedence over her gender at this point. I have one husband, The Architect. He is not insane, but he frequently drives me insane, as I do him, so it’s a nicely symbiotic relationship. I have many friends who make me feel good about myself. I have numerous acquaintances, some of whom make me feel good about myself, and some who make me feel very small. I cook, clean, run the household, pay the bills, and arrange our social lives. I work from home as a writer in the 12 minutes free I have each day.” Nothing like brutal honestly, aye Kerri? With humour and biting satire, Kerri is able to capture the essence of so many women’s experiences of marriage and motherhood commanding attention from those who relate to her anecdotes about life. Due out this month, When My Husband Does The Dishes… is ab-hurtingly funny, totally accurate and bloody clever. Part faux guide, part memoir; and all-in-all an absolute must read for women. Words: Adele Rowlands-Dealey

BLUES ON BROADBEACH Blues on Broadbeach is back, boasting its biggest and best line-up ever. With headlining acts including Jon Stevens, this year’s festival will heat up the cooler winter months.
W
hat do Jon Stevens, Katie Noonan, Vince Jones, Phil Emmanuel, Chain and Kevin Borich all have in common? They are all performing at one of the many Broadbeach events and festivals this year. In 2011, events in Broadbeach will give audiences the chance to sing, dance and feast their way through the cool winter months. This year’s program will have something for everyone and is hoped to give local businesses a muchneeded financial boost, in what is traditionally a quieter time of the year for tourism. More than 130,000 people are expected to visit Broadbeach to attend one of the four events – Blues on Broadbeach, Broadbeach Opera in the Park, Broadbeach Restaurant Week and the Broadbeach Jazz Festival – running between May and August. The massive line-up of events will begin on the last weekend of May with the much-anticipated 10th anniversary of the Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival.

Celebrations will run over four massive days and nights giving audiences the chance to witness more than 200 performers on outdoor stages and venues throughout the area. This year’s festival features headlining acts like the originators of ‘Oz Blues’, Chain, and Aussie favourite Jon Stevens, whose remarkable career has included fronting Noiseworks, INXS and performing in mega musical, Jesus Christ Superstar. Other performers include Phil Emmanuel, Kevin Borich, the Bondi Cigars and international acts Hamilton Loomis, Austin “Walkin’ Cane”. Transcending the barriers of age, gender and culture, it is one of Australia’s iconic Blues Festivals, feeding on the unique village-like atmosphere and relaxed ambience of the Gold Coast. The annual event remains free too, so you can enjoy the fun festivities without the hassle of having to get a ticket. Broadbeach Alliance CEO Jan McCormick believes this year’s line-up of events is the best yet and gives everyone a reason to visit Broadbeach. Jan McCormick, CEO of Broadbeach Alliance and organiser of the Festival believes the anniversary will see thousands of people visit the Broadbeach precinct to celebrate 10 years of the Blues being in Broadbeach. “The tenth anniversary will be a true celebration of this Festival and the positive impact it has on the economy of Broadbeach and the City as a whole,” she says. “The team has worked hard to deliver what we believe to be the best line-up yet, including performers who have supported the festival over the years returning to celebrate with us.” Blues music is food for the soul and this festival combines the best of Blues with the finest Gold Coast cuisine. The Blues on Broadbeach Festival runs this May 26-29 and is free to attend. Words: Adele Rowlands-Dealey.

YOUTHFUL BEAUTY
Beauty does indeed lie within, but if pigmentation is hampering your skin, that beauty will be dulled. We’ve sought out the best treatments to ensure your skin is full of radiance. PIGMeNtatION Look at the faces of young children and babies and you’ll notice that one of the signs of a youthful face is the absence of pigmentation. Notice their clear skin, even texture and tone. uneven pigmentation makes a face look older and takes away from our best features. It comes in a variety of forms. Skin conditions such as Melasma can be hormone related, often developing during pregnancy; caused through trauma (such as a burn) and also made worse by sun exposure. “Liver spots” or
solar keratoses can be darker spots with a roughened surface and need to be checked by a doctor before treatment as there’s a small risk that these can become skin cancers. Many people who have suffered acne are then left with scarring, often presenting as dark reddish-purple in colour. the most common is freckles caused through sun exposure – looks cute when you are a child, but increases in depth, spot size, colour and can develop into roughened patches over time. treatMeNt Pigmentation usually requires a combination treatment, tailored to the cause, severity and the heritage/colour of your skin. the treatment combinations often include prescription depigmenting creams, specialist skin peels, IPL and Laser. First we target the stronger, darker pigmentation and then the lighter areas, working towards a more even skintone. Darker skins are trickier to treat, and need careful management by skilled aestheticians.
Once treatment is complete, prevention of new pigmentation will require the use of 30+SPF every day – a vital part of your morning routine even if you feel that you don’t spend much time outdoors or in direct sunlight, or are one of the lucky ones who have avoided pigmentation so far. and as ongoing treatment, products like Skinstitut even blend Serum will also help prevent the production of pigmentation if used daily as part of your skin care regime. COMMENT BLOKES
BEER GOGGLES We might not like what he’s got to say, but he’s our commentator on all things bloke-y…raise your hands up in the air, y’all for Mr Beer Goggles. HAND ME A CHICKEN PARMI
N
ever mind planetary comparisons and all that complete and utter bollocks, there’s simply a difference between blokes and chicks. I don’t need to be an astrologist of any kind to tell you that. For girls, there’s all the gushy bits like love, marriage, unity, soul mates and stuff. On the other side, for blokes, there’s a bit of the gushy (especially if we want our evening meal cooked for us) but for the most part, we’re happy to cruise along in our own little world with a woman who pops into it every now and then – maybe it’s every day, maybe it’s not. We don’t need to go on dates every night, or even every week, to the city’s most swanky (you can take the ‘s’ off the front of the word to get the real effect) overpriced and overrated gourmet restaurants. We don’t need to plan ‘special’ weekends away to expensive resorts where we have to colour-coordinate our boardies with our girl’s bikinis and spend afternoons walking long, secluded beaches thinking romantic thoughts (when our heads are telling us we’ve got to find the island’s wifi connection to get the footy results). We don’t need big, lavish wedding celebrations for a hundred and fifty guests that we’ll then have to spend the next 15 years of our lives paying the mortgage on.
Have your say:
. Go to getitmagazine com.au
We don’t even need a big, flash four-bedroom home to house our three good-looking kids – all with matching haircuts – and our fluffy golden labradoodle. We don’t need much at all. Low-maintenance, us blokes. Guys can live wherever, however – especially if it means we’ve got a couch that’s in close proximity to the tele, a few short paces from the fridge and it has surround sound speakers. We’re happy just to go to the local pub for a chicken parmi and a pint of XXXX. Don’t confuse me with one of them chauvinist types; I’m just saying it like it is. If women could ease back a little on all their demands – big flashy diamond rings; buying the biggest house on the block, simply so we can keep up with her friends; throwing us into early fatherhood (when we’re just plain not ready) and insisting that we go with them to ‘Sunday brunch with her parents’ when all we’d rather be doing is sleeping off last night’s hangover and kicking a footy round the park with the lads. Sure, there’s a lot of good about a relationship but why in Great Auntie Flow can’t we all live in equality and harmony? A world where the lovely women in our lives were not constantly demanding we get a higher-paid job, but yet somehow find a way to spend more time with them; where we weren’t constantly asked when we are going to propose. A world where it’s cool to just wear our outfit of choice,
16
GetIt_june11_16_beergoggs.indd 16
without being asked to change it. From head-to-toe and back again. C’mon ladies, just give us a break. It won’t hurt you to wind back on that old demandometre just a peg or two, would it? Let some things slide...maybe just the ones that won’t ruin your relationship.

ave you ever been conned in by a ‘craze’? Like the ab-shaper, or the steam mop that doesn’t need any water. I don’t usually buy into fads, I like to think I’m a bit cleverer than that. Apart from style ones – jeggings, skinny cargos and shearling boots – can’t get enough of ‘em. And the odd diet here and there – The Atkins (way too much to soon). The cabbage-only (the starvation was killing me) and the nofail Thin by Friday (hoorah to the skinny me!) And yes, maybe the odd class of Zumba from time-to-time. But there is a new trend fad floating around H-wood that has caught my eye. It’s ‘toning footwear’ and I’m afraid it has me all caught up. Haven’t heard of them? Oh, let me fill you in! They are shoes that help you tone up (apparently by about 18%, if you’ll believe it) when you wear them. I’m all up for anything that gives me a little Go to getitmagazine. foot up in that department – as fellow com.au lippers will know, this little lady has a penchant for living the high life and all the calories that go along with it. The shoes work by having some sort of imbalance platform inside (but in a good way) that makes you work harder to stabilise your footing and balance when you walk/run/leap. There’s a bunch of brands who’ve all devised their own sort of balance or toning shoe and I can’t honestly tell you which one is the best but if we’re going on looks, some are way hotter than others – if you can indeed deem a fitness shoe ‘hot’ (I sound a little too like Paris Hilton there!). There are those that do look a little special needs with their two-inch thick wedge-type sole (bit like the shoes Forrest Gump had to wear) but that’s the whole idea…they make you work harder when you walk, sort of like you’re walking with an upside down boat stuck to the bottom of your shoe (but not as slippery). Like I said, I don’t normally give in to all the hype, but when I caught a pap shot of Kim K and her sassy sistas wearing a pair on their

daily workout, I had to get me a set. Even though the ones I got were not her brand (again with the wedge soul stuff, sorry just not me. Platforms are for heels, not gym shoes) mine are much more sporty looking and there’s hardly any evidence of said ‘balancing soul’ to be seen. So, just like Jane Fonda in her lovely jazzercise days, I’m all over it. Less the sweat headband and raised collar shirt. And so far, it’s one week in but I can already feel the toning beginning to take effect – even if it’s not contributing to the extreme weight loss I’ve been anticipating!

THE GREAT WEIGHT DEBATE For some women it’s a constant battle to stay thin. For others it’s about being comfortable in your own skin. But what really is hot – Kim or Megan? We go to the blokes to find out the perfect female form in their eyes.

ow many women have suffered with their size during their lifetime? It’s the Great Weight Debate and is a constant companion – or perhaps hindrance – in a woman’s life. There’s not a girl on the planet who hasn’t at some stage of her life, pondered, ‘does this make me look fat...?’. But do women really need to subject themselves to this weight crisis or, is it all simply in their heads? And do men – apparently the ones they’re trying to impress with their weight or lack thereof in the first place – really care whether women are a comfy size 14 or a miniscule size 6? “I actually quite like a woman who feels good about herself and not about the size she is. It makes her confident and complain a heck of a lot less,” laughs Stuart, a 37-year-old property developer from Brisbane. “Do women try to impress us or do they try to impress each other? I think you’ll find most guys are just happy if their partners are happy.” Stuart’s wife has enviable model proportions herself and was once a beauty pageant winner in her late teens. “I think she’s perfect but yes, I’d say she worries about her figure from time-to-time. The thing she doesn’t really get is that I don’t care if she gains a couple of kilos here and there and I hardly notice. It’s only when she points it out – and even then, I couldn’t tell you where!” Australian standard measurements for a women’s size 10 are now 34-26-36 and the average Australian woman is a size 14. To some, that’s weighty but for others that’s normal. Silver screen star Marilyn Monroe, whose sexy silhouette was often considered in her day (and continues to be) one of the most sexiest women in the world – enabled her a spot as having one of the most enviable figures of her era. The screen goddess’s actual measurements were believed to have fluctuated an inch or two (shock horror, a woman whose figure changed shape from week-to-week) but her dressmaker noted her perfect form to be 36-23-37 and she was 5’5” tall. Today’s modern sex kitten, Kim Kardashian, is considered to be more on the curvaceous side of sexy, yet her measurements are not far off the great screen goddess Marilyn. Kim’s measuring tape comes in at 34-26-39 and www.getitmagazine.com.au

she stands at just 5’2”. Happy in her skin and tired of being considered curvy or ‘bigger’, Kardashian has been known to take to her blog, reaching out to her millions of followres, claiming TV and pictures make her appear larger than she actually is. ‘My body frame is small, but since I have curves, many people assume I am bigger and wear a bigger size in jeans. This is simply not the case! The misconception carries over to my weight, too. I am right under 120lbs (54kg), but a lot of people have been shocked to hear that and have accused me of lying! Haha. I was clear to state that everyone carries their weight differently. I have very skinny chicken legs, so my jeans need to be a smaller size to fit my legs. I have a tiny waist, which is smaller than a size 27 so I always need to have the waist tailored. I also wear stretch jeans, because my booty just gets flattened in any jean that has no stretch and doesn’t fit into non-stretch jeans.’ Kim isn’t necessarily a bigger girl, but her height certainly has her weight gauged at a larger measurement that she is. And for men, this is quite healthy. “She seems like she has
www.getitmagazine.com.au
GetIt_june11_20-21_greatweight.indd 21
“My body frame is small, but since I have curves, people assume I am bigger... I am right under 54kg” – Kim Kardashian a good load of confidence about her, that’s always a good trait. For men, often it’s more how women feel about themselves than it is about how they look. We don’t really know the difference between a size 10 or a size 12 – well most of us don’t,” Stuart says. Over on the other side of the scales, sexy actress and Transformers star Megan Fox, 23, was once a healthy, sexy star but has recently come under fire due to her rapid weight loss. The petite Jennifer’s Body star is 5’6” and weighs around 51kg, though during filming for Transformers, had a little more curves to her slim frame. While the star’s celebrity trainer maintains Megan finds it difficult to gain weight and is constantly battling to keep up her body fat, very few believe the star – who incidentally has a tattoo of her idol, Marilyn Monroe, on her inner arm – to be in healthy condition. He defends her figure as simply due to a fastburning metabolism. “She is really trying to gain weight, but it’s very hard for her. She gets frustrated at times because she wants to gain weight, she has to weight train to do that,” her celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak said recently in rebuttal to anorexia claims. Do the male population believe her figure is sexy this way? “She’s a pretty girl, yes, but I think she does perhaps look a little thin in this picture,” Stuart adds empathetically. “Why did she get so thin, I thought she was amazing...I guess that’s what Hollywood does to you.” It’s believed Megan’s drastic weight loss was mostly due to her being signed on as an Emporio Armani underwear model for a campaign last year – that saw the star’s ribs protrude through her lithe frame – but the actress hasn’t changed her unhealthy habits, or gained any kilo’s. Known for her public gaffes, Megan has
21
revealed she often drinks vinegar to cleanse her system and get rid of bloating – though no dietician would support this unhealthy dietary notion. The average sized Australian woman in the 1920s weighed around 60kg and was approximately 5’6” tall. Fast forward almost a century and those figures have fluctuated considerably – by around 10-12kg in weight – yet the height has only gained by 2-4cm. Women’s figures have certainly changed through the decades but does it make that much difference to men? “That’s interesting that figure shapes and measurements have changed through the years,” says Stuart. “That could be mostly due to the amount of takeaway our current generation consume. More about lifestyle, convenience and availability. People had to have home-cooked meals back in the early part of last century because McDonald’s didn’t exist. Now, there’s one on every street corner.” Still, who would our male judge consider to be the most sexy, confident or attractive? “Well, if you put Marilyn in there, then she wins hands down. She had an amazing body that got a lot of dignitaries in trouble! She was what I’d deem a ‘real’ woman. But if it comes down to Kim or Megan...I think I’d have to say Kim. The thinner Megan’s face looks a bit skinny, which does happen when girls lose too much weight too fast.” Don’t throw away those cross trainers just yet, but for women – who will continually choose to mount the battle of the Great Weight Debate – there is a need to face reality and ask themselves, ‘Is it him I’m trying to please or my friends or both and why can’t i I just be happy the way I am?’. FREEDOM FIGHTER She’s a mum-of-three who was wrongly imprisoned in a third-world jail, subjected to torture and threats. An eventual release and a presidential pardon, meant Kay Danes was returned to her home and her children, inspiring her to embark on a selfless humanitarian crusade.
T
o walk past Kay Danes in a crowded shopping centre you could be forgiven for thinking she’s just like the rest of us, quietly going about her daily life like any busy mother-of-three. But behind this Queenslander’s infectious smile and perfectlystyled brunette bob, lives a truly remarkable woman, a survivor who has been to hell and back and lived not only to tell the tale but gone on to help hundreds of other women in the process. Kay’s life took an incredible turn when she, her husband, Kerry, and her three children moved to Laos to head up an international security company. Laos is a country rich in natural beauty but that bares all the scars of an embattled third-world nation, where crime, corruption and land mines indescrimately kill and impair thousands of victims every year. Not long after the family settled into their new home, Kay and Kerry – who is with the Australian Special Forces – became entangled in a serious dispute between their client, sapphire mining company Gem Mining Lao, and the Laos government. The events that followed saw Kay and Kerry unjustly imprisoned in a brutal Laos jail forced to endure horrific conditions. Taken from them were there three children, Jessica, 14, Sahra, 11, and seven-year-old Nathan, who were sent home to Australia, not knowing if they would ever see their parents again. While incacerated, the Danes endured brutal interrogations, mock executions, torture, and other violations of their human rights all amidst the agonising separation from their children. In late June 2001, having spent six months detained without charge, Kay and Kerry were found guilty without any evidence and sentenced to seven years in Phonthong. Four months later, thanks to the Howard Government’s intervention, media fascination and the tireless and brilliant diplomacy of Australian ambassador at the time, Jonathan Thwaites, Kerry and Kay were freed from prison and placed under house arrest at the ambassador’s home. The couple’s horrific experience became a catalyst for Kay to dedicate her life to humanitarian efforts and inspired her first May 2011

INTERVIEW book titled, Standing Ground which detailed the torture and horrendous conditions in Laos prisons and detention centres. Not long after, the couple were presented with a presidential pardon and left Laos in what seemed the longest flight home to Brisbane before being reunited with their three children in an emotional reunion. Ten years later, Kerry has continued his Defence career, which has included several tours of Afghanistan, while Kay, inspired by her ordeal, has gone on to become a leading international speaker and best-selling author. Her latest book, Behind The Pale Blue Burqa is Kay’s incredible tale of travelling through Taliban strongholds with four fellow humanitarians: ordinary people from diverse backgrounds, determined to do whatever it takes to deliver life-changing opportunities and aid to people devastated by war. “When I was a child I was always very competitive and never content to be mediocre,” Kay says of her childhood. “I was champion school athlete, captain of the netball, softball and basketball teams, cross country champion, on the school swim team, and popular among my peers. I would always strive to be the best. I haven’t changed. I wanted to be a famous hairstylist to the stars. I left school in year 10 and went to train with Stefan. I thought I was on my way but life doesn’t always work out the way we expect. I wanted to be more and eventually I ended up on another path which led me into security.” The impassioned humanitarian says she is still the same person – even though her ordeal took it’s toll. “I’m the same as I’ve always been. Even prior to that unlawful prison ordeal, I was very much into charitable causes and helping others. I have always been concerned by the hardships that others face and how I can assist in alleviating those hardships. The Laos ordeal didn’t change me but it did make me more globally aware. I have lobbied alongside Governments in exile, (Burma, Laos) and even before the Laos ordeal, I was very much involved with providing support to impoverished people. “I learned from the political prisoners, that you have to smile in the face of adversity, particularly when things are so unimaginable that you can hardly believe it possible to endure. I learned to smile even when I felt at my lowest. It was a way of not letting things overwhelm me. Humour can be very distracting when you are witnessing things like torture. It takes you to a place where you feel you are untouched by the trauma surrounding you. In prison, I used to sing to myself an old Nat King Cole song called ‘Smile’. Smile, though your heart is aching Smile, even though it’s breaking When there are clouds in the sky You’ll get by... If you smile With your fear and sorrow Smile and maybe tomorrow You’ll find that life is still worthwhile www.getitmagazine.com.au
GetIt_june11_22-23_hostage.indd 23
If you just...smile! Kay says she has become more spiritual since her ordeal, quoting an old Arab proverb that says... ‘What is destined will reach you, even if it be underneath two mountains and what is not destined, will not reach you, even if it be between your two lips.’ “I believe there is no permanence; actions come with consequences; and there is possibility of change in everyone. I believe in self, in being a good person and trying to better myself rather than trying to change others. My integrity is the basis of my spirituality,” she adds. Attempting to sully the myth that all Muslim cultures are the same, Kay says it’s important to understand that Afghan people are courageous, generous and compassionate. “They are very family-orientated and resilient. They love their children just as much as we love ours and strive to improve their lives, to have the things they couldn’t have as children. They are very patriotic and most want peace, it’s just that others often insist in
“You have to smile in the face of adversity, particularly when things are so unimaginable you can hardly believe it possible to endure...” having their way.” And, she insists, we all share the same mothering instincts – to nuture and protect our young. “To compare Afghan mothers to Australian mothers I’d say that Australian mothers are busier with work and mothering. Whereas Afghan women believe that the highest calling in life is to be a mother – foremost. Most live quite simply and have the luxury of being able to stay home to raise their families; as opposed to having the luxuries that accompany a high paid salary or achieving independence. Both are very dedicated to whatever they choose to do. Both are often found to be courageous and resilient. Having said that, the younger generation of Afghan women are very similar to our Y generation. They have iphones, ipads and broadband internet. Many are career focused and are striving to better themselves through education.” Kay has now embraced Buddhism and says it helps her achieve an inner silence. “Most of us are addicted to thinking. Emptying your mind can bring greater clarity. It can help you deal with the seemingly overwhelming or put things into perspective so they are less overwhelming. It enables us to take time out from the stresses we encounter. I find if I switch off every now and then, I feel a renewed energy and alertness.” As someone who know devotes a lot of time, effort and funding to charities, Kay says it’s important to research the foundation you are supporting.
23
“I always check the governance to ensure the charity is actually registered and operating in accordance with legislation. Then I look at who the charity targets (to help) and what and how they achieve their goals. Referrals are a good way of finding a charity that suits you. Local charities helping local people are probably the easiest to support because you can actually get involved personally and see where your money is going. Rotary supports international and local communities which is why I became a member. It’s good to help people in a wide variety of ways and be supported and encouraged by like-minded people. nown to his friends – and his devoted listeners – as Pickle, this weekend show presenter has all the girls flocking with a single flash of his melting smile. But don’t let his good looks and cheeky charm fool you; Sea FM presenter Michael Walkly has the brains to match the brawn. Where did you grow up? I moved to the Gold coast when I was five. I have two brothers – one older, one younger. and yeah, we get along most of the time. I actually work with one of them. How did you get into radio? I guess it was always what I wanted to do. When I was in high school, I did a radio assignment and it was the best marks I’d ever got. So I thought, ‘this is it!’ I started radio school as soon as I finished high school and then, shortly after, I became a d---head on the radio! [laughs]. What’s your favourite part of the job? The fortnightly pay! Nah, definitely the on-air time. and just being an idiot and getting to talk to people all the time. I like interviewing too. Your catchphrase? I hate ‘FMl’! I’m like: ‘You still have your arms and legs, so stop complaining!’ Where did your nickname come from? let’s just say, I was dacked by my mates at a party once and I’ve been trying to get rid of the nickname ever since. You were nominated for the cleo Bachelor of the Year Awards in 2008? I know! What were they thinking? I think it was a caller that nominated me. Getaway’s Jason Dundas won, but it was still fun. You’re obviously seen as quite desirable to many girls out there, but does your heart belong to anyone? No, I’m a single man. It’s Facebook-official! What do you consider your best trait? I love making people happy. I mean, that’s why I’m in radio, right? I love making my callers laugh and smile. If others are happy, I’m stoked.

Do you live by a mantra? I’d like to say something like, ‘Take each day as it comes’ or ‘live each day like it’s your last,’ but the truth is, I don’t even do that myself...so I guess I don’t really have one. What does a relaxing weekend involve for you? Paddling out to South Straddy (Stradbroke Island) and hitting the wall. Every spare chance I get, I’m there. I can’t get enough, I love it! You’re stuck on an island with only three items of your choice – what are they? Natalie Portman, yoew! My surfboard…and maybe a journalist aye? Just kidding. hether it be the wild manes of hair that fling across the stage, or the awkward jokes tossed in between lyrics, The Cairos are nothing short of entertaining. When these four Brissy boys take to the stage, there is no doubting the talent behind their explosion of musical bliss. Playing everywhere from festivals and suburban warehouses, to supporting acts like Powderfinger and The Strokes, they’ve established themselves as one of Brisbane’s most promising new acts. Get it caught up with The Cairos drummer, BC Michaels, after their Gold Coast show. How did the band meet? I met Alf and Alistar in line at a music store trying to buy some cheap stuff. Ali, Alf and the bass player at the time, Sean, all went to Brisbane State High School together. In 2008, Sean left The Cairos to front Last Dinosaurs so we got Ali and Alf’s friend from school, Rueben, on the bass. In 2007, The Cairos won the Brizband Challenge, was this a starting point for you guys? I actually wasn’t on the band at this stage but from what I gather the Brizband competition was a really long time ago and back then it was good to win some studio time which helped get us small shows – a building block for everyone. Who inspires you? We are inspired by a lot of things. Some of www.getitmagazine.com.au

them are our friend’s bands around us that always seem to be pumping out better songs and pulling bigger crowds and that drives us. Also the other bands we’ve grown up with, they’ve always inspired us. I like Tame Impala, Dz, Kanye West...The Beatles. What has been the hardest challenge you’ve all had to face? Probably the last tour we did. We were on the road with no money and little sleep for around a month. It was pretty crazy, we all saw each other at our worst pretty much every day – it was like going camping without a mosquito net. It’s good to get time off now for a tiny bit before we do it all again. How did you develop your sound and band persona? We developed our sound by rehearsing at our warehouse on most days of the week and then playing in front of people frequently, making small adjustments to songs and we experiment with sounds that tickle our fancy. Our persona is something we create and tweak so we can appeal to what we think others would like. Our persona is displayed and developed through us growing as people and as musicians, and I guess people just take what they want from that. You’ve played alongside The Temper Trap, Julian Casablancas (The Strokes), Powderfinger, You Am I and many more, who has been the highlight for you? Julian Casablancas was my highlight to play with. It was just our band and his band
25
at the Tivoli and after being a big Strokes fan for years, it was nice to finally meet him and his band. What do you think about the music culture in Brisbane? I think parts of Brisbane’s music culture are thriving at the moment. Some bands ‘band’ together with each other and start some sort of a scene and really spread the word fast which is great. But I do think there needs to be more music venues with the right idea. We lost the Troubadour and yeah we gained Woodland, but I’d like to see another club house (empire) start up again where small bands can always have a go and patrons can watch for free. That’s the way a lot of bands get their first go. Who would be your absolute ultimate musician to play with? I would say it could be the Foo Fighters. Or Paul McCartney with Davey G on drums, like at the Grammy’s or something. What can we expect from The Cairos over the next year? New material and massive news to be revealed very soon which will outdo anything we’ve achieved to date! Even after a wink and a nudge, BC remained determined not to reveal this news he speaks so highly of. Until then, The Cairos can be found performing all around the country and heard streaming from Triple J’s ‘Unearthed’ segments. Words: Georja Ryan June 2011

FOCUS PROFILE
DAYDREAM BELIEVER There are not many people who get to follow their dreams, least of all a 20-year-old. But Marlena Katene didn’t let age or disability get in the way of determination. This bright, powerful young woman became Australia’s youngest franchisee.
W
e all have moments in life when we think we’ve been dealt a bad blow. We’re busy, we’re stressed, we can’t get out of work, we never have any free time to just relax, we don’t seem to find the right boyfriend – but there are people who swiftly snap you out of your own self pitty and bring you back down to earth. One such young woman is Marlena Katene. We meet at our local café as we catch up with some mutual friends and she tells me she’s just come from a class at Uni. I soon learn this is the second degree Marlena is studying – and she’s just 20 years old. This is the type of person to humble you. Marlena has already completed a Diploma of Business but her real passion lays in writing and she’s now studying towards a Bachelor of Communications at Griffith University. Handing me a booklet of her work, Marlena says writing has always been something she has enjoyed. “It’s a sort of escape. I love it,” she says. Combining her entrepeneurial skills, gained through her hard-earned Business Diploma, the young gun is already the proud owner of a rapidly growing jumping castle business. “Around four or five years ago I found a business for sale at Broadbeach markets and I thought, ‘why not? I’ll give it go’.” The talented young businesswoman started Specialty Castles while she was still at school in Year 10, saying her motivation behind the
huge project was having a job just like her friends. “I started with just one castle and I built it up gradually. Then this year, an opportunity came up to purchase the franchise.” Marlena bought the business and became the youngest franchisee in Australia. “Now I have 13 castles to choose from and I’m well-known with a number of organisations including [sporting] clubs, markets, the Braveheart Foundation and numerous community events.” But the very compelling and heartwarming part of this amazing story of bravery, courage and aptititude is that not only has Marlena achieved all this at such a young age, but she’s accomplished it as a young lady born with cerebral palsy, who can’t speak without assistance and requires a wheelchair for mobility. “I just wanted to give back to the community that gave so much to me,” she says as though she’s just like any other 20-year-old trying to find her place in the world. Marlena has travelled the globe presenting motivational workshops and relaying to others her very important mantra that life is too short to worry about the hand you’ve been dealt in life. She believes if you set your mind to some
thing and really work at it, anything is possible. “A barrier is only a barrier if we want it to be, otherwise it’s just a challenge and challenges are good. The difference between successful people and people who fail in life are those who let barriers get in the way of their dreams and goals.” Marlena has proved herself to be one incredible young Australian that we can all learn something from. “I
can’t pinpoint the place my story began... each step, each moment of my life has contributed to who i am, who i was and how i crossed the bridge between the two…” for Alysha Herrmann, it’s difficult to chart the journey into the toxic place her child was born from. she met her son’s father when she was just 12 and he was 15. Anthony was the older brother of a girl from Alysha’s class. Alysha says they were a new family to the small rural school and they didn’t quite “fit”. they wore clothes that looked too well worn and didn’t fit quite right, they lacked social skills and confidence and i felt protective of them and angry at my peer’s rejection of their differences,” she says. “i became close to the whole family. i chose to see in them, the potential to improve, to change their lives and be better.” But this was a family that spoke to each other with cruelty and barely repressed anger, who mostly existed on a
“Nasty words soon turned to shoves and slaps, and most frighteningly, sexual violence...” combination of welfare and unskilled labour, who lacked social and financial resources and who saw the whole world as a threat and a challenge.” When Alysha turned 14, her family moved to a bigger town three hours away. “i was thrown into a new place i [felt] couldn’t fit into but this time i was drowning in my fears and doubts of myself and my family. Like most teenage girls, i was too much like my mum and clashes quickly escalated into both of us feeling misunderstood. so i continued to reach out to Anthony.” it wasn’t hard for the then 17-year-old Anthony to convince Alysha he loved her, and that she should love him in return. “i was a teenage girl being constantly bombarded with images of thin sexy women and being told by my peers that i was ugly and fat and didn’t belong….so it wasn’t hard to love someone that said they loved me and that i was pretty. “i wanted a place to belong. i had plenty of doubts even then, but the fear and the deep need to feel connected was louder and drove me eventually to leave home and the town i was living in to move to Adelaide with Anthony, when i was only 15. i changed schools again but i began realising that Anthony had no intention of supporting us or looking for work, so after six months of living like a pauper, i left school and got a job working 50 hours a week in a factory. “Love is weird. A boy can take you over, make you forget everything you are. Make you forget everything that used to matter. Until you’re stretched so thin you don’t know who you are any more or where you belong. i don’t think Anthony ever meant to ruin my life or damage me. He’s not a bad person. He has good intentions. He just stuffs them up all the time. His actions don’t support his words. that made me mad. i would have given up my whole life for him www.getitmagazine.com.au

– for a while i did – [but] he couldn’t even get a job and be faithful to me. “His words were always full of anger and control and he would constantly tell me no one else would ever want me. But Anthony crossed the line when nasty words soon turned to shoves and slaps and, most frighteningly, sexual violence. there were times i would say yes to sex only because i knew if i said no, he would hold me down and do it anyway. i thought it must happen to everyone. i knew it was wrong. i knew i was letting him abuse me; that i had made myself a victim. sometimes it’s like a dream. i’d never let anyone treat me like that now. i’d leave.” But then the imaginable happened. “Wow. What does being pregnant feel like? How do you explain that? especially to a guy. i found out Anthony had been cheating on me for most of our relationship when i was fiveand-a-half months pregnant. i felt so gutted. so shocked and angry and hurt. But at the same time a voice inside my head was saying, ‘don’t be stupid you knew, you always knew it would come to this’. i felt somehow like my baby wasn’t mine anymore if his father didn’t love me. it was a stupid and melodramatic reaction. But i was so young. And i don’t mean in terms of age, i mean in terms of experience. “the day i started having contractions, Anthony had come home early to tell me he’d quit another job. Again. in the nearly five years we were together, he had over 25 jobs. “My son saved me. i was in a terrible situation because i didn’t love myself and believed i didn’t deserve any better. But i loved my son from the moment he was placed in my arms, and i wanted a better life for him. He deserved it even if i didn’t think i did.” Anthony and Alysha didn’t fight so much
29
after Zach was born. “i can’t directly remember him ever hitting me after Zach was born but i remember the colour of fear that didn’t leave.” not long after, Alysha was finally able to leave her toxic relationship with Anthony and start on a better road. “i wanted to build a better life for him. Being a single parent was hard. My son was tiny and i was so alone and afraid. But despite all the doubts and fears i felt this rightness in me…finally. the hardest days alone were better than the best days with Anthony,” she admits. in 2004, as Alysha turned 19, she returned to school to complete her Year 12 certificate. Despite having completed only a single term of Year 10 and missing Year 11 entirely, she graduated with a tertiary entrance ranking of 83.35 per cent. While completing Year 12, Alysha was also a part-time supervisor at the local pizza bar, a volunteer peer educator for riverland regional Health and participant in a youth theatre project which toured as part of the Come out festival in 2005. “the youth theatre project Random Girls was about teen pregnancy. the directors originally had the idea to make a show about how being a teen mum ‘stuffed up’ your life...but then they met us. We were five young women who loved and cherished our children and believed having them was the best thing that had ever happened. i believe in the power of individuals to create change for themselves. “i’ve just turned 26. Zach will be nine in november and every day he inspires me to be a better person. More and more i see the shadow of his father in his face. sometimes that hurts. other times it makes me glad. i don’t want to forget where i’ve been. i’m a product of every fork in the road my life has taken. some of the past is painful, but i look at my beautiful child, the opportunities i’ve been given, the friends i now have and the life i’m living and think only that i am lucky. Lucky to have come through the other side and be okay. Lucky because my mistakes haven’t defined me, they’ve created me and i am just fine.” As told to Adele Rowlands-Dealey. June 2011

WAG NATION Photo: supplied by FOXTEL
They’re glam, they’re gorgeous and they’re successful. And as the five Wives and Girlfriends (WAGs) of FOX8’s new reality series WAG Nation prove, there’s more than being just a pretty face behind their famous sports star partners.

T
he term WAG hadn’t been heard of much before former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham and her stylish English cohorts made it hip to be seen on the sidelines of their famous hubbies’ games. Now the fever has spread Down Under as production on the locally-made series WAG Nation kicked off last month. Producers of the Foxtel series have confirmed the five stars are: shoe designer Terry Biviano, fiancée of NRL Sydney Roosters player Anthony Minicello; event planner Lynette Bolton, wife of AFL Sydney Swans player Jude Bolton; fashion boutique owner Jackie Spong, fiancée of AFL Carlton Blues player Jarrad Waite; promotions manager Jana Peterson, long-term girlfriend of NRL Cronulla Sharks player John Williams; and flight attendant Chantelle Raleigh, girlfriend of our very on Gold Coaster, NBL Blaze player Adam Gibson. Produced by Shine Australia, WAG Nation is a 10-part reality series that follows the lives of these five independent, professional women who also happen to be partnered with some of Australia’s biggest sporting stars. “We all know Australians are sports mad, but it seems they’re just as ‘WAG’ crazy!” says Group Channel Manager, Duane Hatherly. “That’s why WAG Nation is so exciting for us.” From the highs and lows of supporting a professional sporting career and the daily pressures of maintaining a relationship, to the stress of managing their own careers – not to mention the demands of a hectic social life – the cameras will be there to capture it all. “It’s quite exciting to be part of the team,” says Chantelle Raleigh of her involvement in the series. “I personally don’t have a problem with the whole ‘WAG’ stigma. I am who I am. I don’t follow any set rules or regulations; I just do my own thing. My boyfriend just so happens to be an athlete so I guess that makes me a WAG.” Viewers will soon get a glimpse into the glamorous – and sometimes not so glamorous – parts of these women’s very public lives. “I’m in a great place in my life, my boyfriend is just a dream, so I went to the casting and I thought, ‘why not share it with everyone?’ I have nothing to hide. I don’t change on or off camera, and [although] the cameras do literally follow you around, it’s pretty much just what I’d do usually – going to a casting, or if I’m booked for a job, or Adam and I are going to a function – like, nobody needs to see you in the shower, we all know what everyone gets up to,” she laughs. “And it’s because I’m happy where I’m at, that I didn’t mind sharing everything.” WAG Nation will air later this year. POTATO AND LEEK SOUP You will need: 8-10 good quality cream flesh potatoes 2-3 tbsp olive oil 2 leeks, thinly sliced 1 red onion, finely diced 4 cloves garlic, crushed 1 litre vegetable stock 200 ml fresh cream Freshly ground black pepper Freshly ground rock salt 4 sprigs of fresh thyme Dash of nutmeg

How to: peel potatoes and cut them into 2cm chunks, place in a saucepan and boil in the vegetable stock (potatoes must be completely covered, add more water if required). Boil until very soft. in a large-based saucepan, add olive oil and fry off garlic and red onion with salt and pepper until just translucent and then add leeks to soften. Add potatoes and vegetable stock and combine. Using a handheld blender, blitz until all large chunks are removed. Then add cream and bring to temperature (not quite boiling). Add nutmeg, leaves of the fresh thyme and black pepper to serve.

How to: soak your kebab sticks in a dish of warm water for at least two hours (to prevent them from burning). put the backstrap pieces into a steel bowl and add olive oil, garlic, seasoning and salt and pepper and coat well. cover with clingwrap and set aside to marinate for a while. Once the sticks have been soaking (3 hours), make each kebab – starting with a mushroom at the bottom and alternating between your vegetables. remember to place a piece of capsicum between each piece of haloumi (so it’s not sitting right beside the meat). Barbeque kebabs on a mid heat for 5-7 mins on each side. Be careful not to overcook or burn them. Accompany with a chilled tzatziki sauce.

How to cook: Turn the oven up to 230C and ensure the temperature has been reached. Pat dry the roast with kitchen towel, then coat with your fingers using the olive oil. Rub rock salt into the skin (this is how you get the perfect crackling) then dust with freshly ground black pepper. Place in a heavy based roasting pan and cook for 25-28 minutes or until you can see the crackling going crisp (if it’s not, simply cook for longer). Reduce the temperature to 180C, take the dish out of the oven and add the garlic and fresh herbs under the meat, then cook the pork for 25 minutes per 500gm. While the roast is cooking, par boil the potatoes (until just slightly soft), drain the water then add the olive oil, garlic salt and black pepper to the saucepan and put the lid on. Bash the potatoes until you get a floury texture, and then add them to the roasting pan and cook for 50 minutes. Soak broad beans in a dish until they defrost then shell them so the inside squishy bean pops out. Blanch the broad beans and peas in a fry pan with water until they go bright green. Drain and then coat with olive oil, black pepper and a dash of freshly squeezed lemon. Place into a flat serving dish and finish with crumbled feta.

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER The difference in diamond jewellery shopping.
A
n engagement ring is undeniably one of the most important pieces of jewellery a woman will ever receive. During the courtship stage, many gifts will be exchanged between future spouses. Every anniversary, birthday and Valentine’s day will be celebrated with heartfelt cards, beautiful flowers, dinners, chocolates and, of course, jewellery. Even if a beau has been able to wow her with everything in the past, the right diamond ring will make her love him for life. The staff at CTJ Jewellery have established a unique shopping experience and when you first walk in you’ll see how large but how it comfortable it feels, with over 250 square metres, making it a must-see destination when shopping for fine jewellery. With a large range of unique pieces to suit everyone’s personal style and budget, staff know how important a decision these events are to their clients. CTJ’s diamond room – with a range of wholesale loose diamonds – is a females’ paradise, and CTJ management has gone

above and beyond where any other jeweller has been before. They are partnered with some of the largest international diamond dealers and cutters which means you can buy loose diamonds direct at the world’s best competitive prices. CTJ has a section where clients can choose from over 200 settings – whether it be solitaire styles, antique or channel-set – and choose the setting to individualise their ring, basically creating it themselves. There is also a large manufacturing business, making the choice even more diverse. CTJ’s wedding band section is also expansive. After choosing the engagment ring, the wedding band is so important. CTJ has established a specialist area for just that reason – men can choose from a vast range of bands that will be made in 5-7 working days and include free engraving if required. The pearl section makes clients feel like they’re actually in Tahiti, with the range of pearls all set in 18ct white or yellow gold. Once again, CTJ has

maintained quality with a wholesale price tag. Whether you’re looking for a pair of dainty diamond studs, a glamorous tennis bracelet, or a special ring to get down on one knee with, CTJ have everything – and even better – at wholesale prices. Which means not only will she love it, but he will too. And with the money saved on wholesale prices, there’s still a chance he can still get that jetski!

skin delight Winter means it’s time to up the ante on your skincare regime. But even though your skin might not see as much sun, that doesn’t mean you don’t still need protection.
O
ur face is the most sensitive area of the skin on our entire body, so to keep it looking its best, we need to give it the right care. Winter can be extremely harsh on our skin, with cold winds, dry indoor airs and cold temperatures drawing out moisture. All this can leave the skin dry and dehydrated as well as giving it a dull and lifeless appearance. A facial is a great way of combating these but there are so many different types of facials available, choosing the right one can be difficult. We caught up with Lisa Bah from Splendeur Beauty and Day Spa to get the best advice on how to protect and nourish our skin in the coming months. How should we start? The first thing you need to start your winter face care routine is to know your skin type. Everyone is different and although there are numerous
treatments available, they may not all be suitable for your skin. I recommend seeing a specialist. are professional treatments always best? It is always best to have your skin assessed by a beauty specialist first. It’s just like going to see a doctor when you have a cold – a doctor will prescribe you the right medicine to make you well again. If your skin has a problem, you should see a professional to get the right treatment. as we go into winter, what are some things we can do to protect our skin? If possible, you should get a professional facial to eliminate dead skin cells, stimulate cellular renewal and boost radiance. Microdermabrasion Facial, Hydradermie double ionisation, The Star Facial treatment (Guinot), Beaute Neuve and Phytomer Sea Water Pearl Hydrating Facial are all great for most people.
What about people suffering acne and other skin blemishes? For acne-prone skin, I recommend calming and soothing facials like Hydradermie and Phytomer Purifying Brightness facials every week to help the skin heal. The oxygen infusion alone heals breakouts and gives the skin a dewy finish. Also, taking zinc supplements everyday helps control your body’s oil production in a natural way. Do you have any secret anti-aging remedies? Yes, Hydra-lift Hydradermie Double Ionisation using age logic cellulaire gel – it’s a mouthful, I know, but it’s the first skincare product actually capable of deprogramming the ageing process. It’s brilliant! This revolutionary treatment stimulates inactive skin cells giving them renewed energy. Also, contains the basic life giving molecule that releases the energy essential to cells vital functions combine with actinergie. Next the stimulation boosts cells consumption of energy. This advanced procedure increases the penetration of both positive and negative ions, enabling the penetration of active ingredients. anything we can try at home? Make sure you are using a gentle cleanser and toner twice a day (morning and night), and make sure you moisturise! Moisturiser acts as a barrier between the skin and the harsh wind, but also the dry heat indoors. Apply sunscreen whenever you’re outdoors, drink plenty of water and try to limit liquids that dehydrate your body, such as caffeine and alcohol.

Modelling wasn’t something I ever dreamed of doing so I was really shocked,” she says. “When I was about 15, I got approached to do a bit of modelling but I never actually pursued it until I was a bit older. I was a bit shy and unsure of it all, I still felt like a little girl. Then I moved to the Gold Coast when I was 16 [and] that’s when I got into modelling...I was approached by a promotions company and did a few shoots here and there [but] I was still trying to find my feet.” Hannah recently turned 21, relocated to Sydney, and signed with Dallys Model Management. “When I signed with Dallys in Brisbane, I guess it all really hit me that this is something I really want to do as a career.” And now there’s nothing getting in the way of www.getitmagazine.com.au

this young talent as she embarks on a globetrotting career of the world’s catwalks. “It’s funny, I always wanted to be a flight attendant, so I could travel the world. Now I get to travel while doing something else I love.” Having been in the US for the past three months fulfilling her contract with NEXT Modelling agency, Hannah has only just stepped foot back on home turf again. “Miami was amazing. I got to work with so many photographers and stylists and it was different to anything I’ve ever done. I think it was a great stepping stone. Miami has a lot of European clients so there was a lot of editorials and more lifestyle stuff. It was great.” Hannah’s Brisbane-based agent, Thomas Sidney, says her LA agency hope to secure her a role as a Victoria’s Secret Angel. “It’s one of the most coveted jobs. You have to be invited to have an interview, but that’s what her agency over there are working on.” It’s a dream come true for the young model. “Doesn’t everyone want to be one? It’s something I would love to do. I love their models, especially Miranda Kerr. She’s such a massive

inspiration. I really love runway shows. The vibe and the energy. It’s happened so quickly and I guess I’m just taking each day as it comes.” Words: Adele Rowlands-Dealey

PrePArAtIOn: Always start with a freshly cleansed face. As the cooler months can play havoc with our skin, use a moisturising primer and then wait 10 minutes before applying your foundation – giving the primer enough time to sink into your skin. A primer will elongate the life of your makeup as well as help disguise any fine lines and enlarged pores. there are many great primers on the market, but I do recommend using one with sPF protection if you are venturing outdoors. I also recommend using a primer with a silicone base. FOUndAtIOn: When you choose a foundation for winter, the matte finishes are more appropriate than shiny bright finishes. In addition, puffiness under the eyes which is common in the winter can be downplayed through skillful use of very pale yellow or orange tone under eye concealer. It’s typical for people to have paler skin in the winter than they do in summer. Winter makeup should be applied in a way that adds colour and vitality to your skintone. In summer, the face is rosier due to sun exposure with its dose of Vitamin d. In the winter, the lack of sun means winter makeup should include a light tint that matches skintone without being obvious. remember to apply a light dusting of powder all over your face to set your foundation. eYes: think warm tones of bronze, golds, peach and champagne. Use these colours on your mobile lid and then extend them to just under your lower lash line. remember to blend, blend, blend! Highlight your brow bone by applying a light pearl shadow just below your eyebrow. If you want to amp this look up a little bit, simply add some chocolate brown shadow in the crease of your eye socket. this will create a more smokey eye effect. Apply a fine line of black eye liner of your choice (pencil, liquid, gel) just above the upper lash line. Follow this with a double coat of black mascara to both the upper and bottom lashes. CHeeKs: Apply a shade of pink or peach blush on the apples of your cheeks. to find the apples of your cheeks simply smile into the mirror and you will easily identify them. eYe BrOWs: Groom your brows first with a brow brush or a clean mascara wand. then fill them in using either a brow powder or a brow pencil. remember not to go overboard with this as we are after natural looking, but well-groomed brows! LIPs: this look works well with a pale pink shimmery lip. First line the lip with a pale pink lip liner as this will stop the lip gloss ‘bleeding’. the shimmer in the gloss/lipstick will make your lips look fuller and more voluptuous. Champion Success
The team behind successful Sanctuary Cove hair and beauty day spa, Champions, say it’s all down to service and hard work.
O
wners of Champions hair and Beauty Day Spa at Sanctuary Cove, Caroline and Steve Childs, couldn’t be prouder of their achievements over the last 10 years. The success of their business has been a combination of many things during this time. Like any small business, to succeed it takes a lot of hard work, dedication and personal sacrifice. it could be the perfect location of Sanctuary Cove or the loyal clientele that have continued to grow with them along the way. But the most important success of their business is to surround themselves with loyal trustworthy staff. as is the case in business, employees come and go for whatever reason, but they are proud of all of their girls and especially their management that have supported them during this time. Caroline and Steve met over 10 years ago and since taking over the business they have in the past year, completed their third renovation

to provide their clients the very best hair and beauty services available. But also during that time their greatest achievement has been the birth of their son Jack, who is now six. Words cannot explain how proud they are of their little man. During the past 10 years they could not have achieved the success without their salon manager Kellie rawnsley. Kellie came to the salon a young talented hair stylist that not only continued to grow with the business but her family as well. Kellie met her husband Shane and they too have a wonderful family with two girls, Mia, 6 and ava, 18 months old. in addition to Kellie, there’s assistant manager Candice Salmorin who joined the salon as an apprentice over six years ago. Candice has not only grown with the business but her personal life grows as she has married her long time partner rJ and they too are expecting their first child in June.

Their nail technician, Teri Guerney has provided her nail service for clients also for the past 10 years and with her partner Chris, they have also have a little man in their lives, Luca, who is three. Caroline and Steve say they are very grateful for their wonderful team of dedicated staff and just as the business will continue to grow, so will their families.

DINING REVIEW
Bovine Brilliance
There are hundreds of foodie write-ups floating through the pages of magazines, but a good whack of them seem solely focused on the culinary locales of Melbourne and Sydney. And when my fellow food connoisseur, Leanne and I set off in pursuit of fresh and fabulous eats around our local neighbourhood, we were delighted to find one of the finest steak restaurants in town.
T
his month I landed at a little place the locals like to call A Carnivore’s Dining Delight. Situated in the heart of cosmopolitan Broadbeach, overlooking Victoria Park, Moo Moo The Wine Bar + Grill is a multi award-winning restaurant with an indisputable reputation for serving up the best steaks in town – having won the Gold Coast’s Best Steak Restaurant six years in a row probably speaks for itself. But it’s not just the food that makes a great dining experience. This bovine paradise breaks down the barriers of a normal steakhouse by losing the overtly masculine vibe that has
“The real highlight of the menu includes a specialty beef selection using produce from the best breeders in the country...” long been a trademark of its genre. With its vibrant atmosphere, sleek modern décor and extensive wine selection, this has the sure fire makings of an unforgettable night out. Moo Moo Manager Dave Taylor greeted us to our table with immaculate style and grace – as did his friendly staff. We were given a beautiful serving rested wagyu beef with ratatouille truffle, aioli and brioche crumbs while we selected from the beverage menu. We were told of how owner Steven Adams and Head Sous Chef Jeremy Allan raise the concept of a steakhouse by delivering a menu celebrating fresh seasonal flavours from family farms and artisanal producers. We learned the real highlight of the menu includes a specialty beef selection that has been handpicked by Steven using produce from the best breeders in the country. Following the wagyu, came warm sourdough bread rolls with sweet Moo Moo jus and a divine honeyed carrot salsa. I’d already decided on a carnivorous feast, but the menu offers plenty more options that I’d be more than happy to sample: braised wild local venison with puy lentils, walnuts June 2011

and labna with gooseberries, or a Chermoula BBQ organic Bendele chicken breast + confit leg w. lyonnaise salad. It also offers pasta and seafood, and side dishes are split into regular or organic (cauliflower gratin or roasted pumpkin tossed in maple caramel and Asian spices among the former, tempura onion rings or brussel sprouts with caramelised onion and bacon on the latter). Actually, I could probably just order several of the sides and leave happy. Choosing to share and taste a bit of everything on the menu, my fellow reviewer, Leanne and I opted for the honey and szechuan-glazed Mooloolaba black tiger prawns to start. Served over angel hair pasta and tossed in a rich fennel cream, I knew right away we were in for a full-flavoured treat. Next out were the succulent Moreton Bay bugs and juicy pork belly embellished with crunchy crackling and a capsicum and apple jam to garnish. (Is your mouth watering too?) The Moo Moo twice-cooked duck came with confit potatoes and sautéed snake beans, finished with light cinnamon and orange jus. Then arrived the star dish of the night – our 300g Wagyu rump. Cooked medium-rare and to absolute perfection, this homegrown hero came with two sides. First, Portabello mushrooms with Queensland goats fetta – a must try for all mushroom lovers – and second, a crisp iceberg lettuce adorned with the house proscuitto and toasted walnuts with blue cheese cream dressing – they call this ‘The Wedge’. As if our dining pleasure hadn’t filled us enough, the hot fudge sundae ‘Moo Moo-style’ proved too good to resist! The rich chocolate brownie is topped with vanilla bean ice cream, lashed with hot fudge and finished with housemade crunchy honeycomb pieces. If I had to choose my last meal on earth...this would certainly be it! This was one heavenly dining experience at Moo Moo The Wine Bar + Grill, that left us floating on air. The Wine list The Henschke family is one of the longest-established wine names in the Baross beginning in 1861. Fourth-generation Cyril Alfred Henschke, in 1958, created the wine that most captured the red wine world’s imagination – Hill of Grace. His first vintage of this shiraz was produced in 1958. Today, fifth-generation Stephen Henschke and his wife Prue uphold the family name and

reputation, as winemaker and viticulturist respectively. The highly revered and much sought-after Hill of Grace is the pinnacle of the red wines. Prue’s meticulous viticultural management and commitment to biodynamics has seen not only new life breathed into the venerable vineyards, but also a new direction given to white winemaking that their forebears could never have imagined.

Q&A FINANCE

I
have been speaking to a few people with regards to tax strategies and asset protection. One of them uses a “family/ discretionary trust”. How would I know if this is the correct avenue for me? As with any taxation and financial strategy, you should seek professional advice as your circumstances may be entirely different to the people you are speaking to and therefore the “advice” they are relaying may not be relevant for you. There are proposed changes to legislation governing family/discretionary trusts. The Assistant Treasurer, Bill Shorten, has proposed new legislation to clarify the way discretionary trusts are taxed. If the rules are changed, the many hundreds of thousands of Australians who use family/discretionary trusts may need to
update their trust deeds to reflect the new rules. The proposed legislation, to be enacted by the Federal Government, was announced on March 4, 2011, and will apply from the current income year 2010-2011. It focuses on two issues: Who pays the tax where the taxable income of the trust is different from the income of the trust that is available for distribution under the trust deed. For a variety of reasons, including differences between accounting and tax rules, a beneficiary may be taxed on a greater proportion of the trust income than they actually get. Whether it is possible for different beneficiaries to receive different types of income (such as discount capital gains), or whether they will be taxed as if they receive an ‘undissected share’ of all the taxable income of the trust.
Tax can be a complicated issue and many people are unaware of the strategies available to them to minimise their tax and grow their wealth so I suggest you seek advice from your accountant or financial adviser. If you do not currently have a professional adviser, Wealthfarm have experts in Financial Planning, Accounting, Finance and Property. Call 1800 967 548 for a free no obligation appointment. – Luke Glasgow, Managing Director Wealthfarm Accountants The content of this article is intended to provide a general guide to the subject matter. When we think about the world we live in, we try to identify with people around us. Generally, our identification shapes the way we look at ourselves and our body image. Our bodies influence our self-esteem and self-worth. We know that genetic, environmental, behavioural and socio-economic factors influence the way we look. Being overweight or obese are risk factors for diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and other health problems. Obesity has now become one of the biggest medical challenges with an increase in mortality due to co-existing serious disease processes. We should look at food as medicine and as building blocks for a healthier body. At the same time, with the help of the health industry, we should improve our general quality of living. with the big cats Melbourne-born, Gold Coast-bred Bryce Retzlaff is one of the latest additions to the Brisbane Lions’ pride. At just 19, this wall of bulging biceps is wearing the number 37 jersey for one of the most successful AFL clubs in the nation.
A
s a child, Bryce only ever dreamt of becoming a professional footballer. He never thought he would one day be living his dream. “As a young kid it was my ultimate dream, but as I got older I didn’t think I was good enough so I started working for my dad’s plumbing business. By 2009 I thought, you know what, I’ve got nothing to lose, I’m going to give footy another crack. And I was lucky enough to get picked up.” Bryce’s football journey began at five, when his football-fanatic parents signed him up to the Labrador tigers. At 10, he represented the southport sharks where he stayed for three years. By thirteen, Bryce was ready for another change, joining the Mudgeeraba saints in under 14’s and 16’s. After leaving school in grade 11 to pursue a plumbing apprenticeship, Bryce gave up football, trading his footy shorts for King Gee’s and a tool belt. But, by 18, he was back in his boots, representing his old club, Labrador. It was with this team that he was noticed by Lions recruiters during the Queensland AFL state league competition where he was chosen out of 1300 footballers in the national draft. Bryce is the first ever player from Labrador to get drafted to a professional team and says he definitely won’t be the last. “It is a massive honour because the Labrador Football Club is a very proud club and did a lot in my development as a player. some great players have come out of the footy club and I’m certain many more will.” Assistant seniors Coach for the Brisbane Lions, Jade rawlings, says Bryce’s attitude and talent is to be admired. “Bryce is a very hard working and talented player. He is naturally gifted and sees the game very well. His strengths are his marking on the lead, goal kicking, ground level play and decision making. His attitude is first class.” talented he may be, but behind the rippled www.getitmagazine.com.au

physique and his tattoo-covered torso, fame hasn’t gone to this up-and-coming prodigy’s head just yet, with his coach saying the young talent has retained a modest air about him. “Bryce is a very impressive young man. I admire his care for his family and those close to him. He is talented, driven, competitive and mature beyond his age. He is way too hard on himself and is learning how to cope with disappointment and not meeting his high standards. If Bryce can believe in himself more, he has the attitude and ability to have a good AFL career.” Bryce says despite playing with the Lions, he is still the same 19-year-old his friends and family have grown to know and love. “I have matured a lot from being in a professional environment, and it has certainly showed me a different way of life,
“I have matured a lot from being in a professional environment, and it has certainly showed me a different way of life...” but I like to think I haven’t become arrogant or think I am any better than anyone else because that is certainly not the case. Footballers or any professional sportspeople are no different to your everyday hard working person.” the dedication and drive defining Bryce’s character prove being a professional sportsman isn’t all trophies and paparazzi, but requires an unrequited commitment to both a team and a lifestyle. “Being a professional footballer is a full-time job. I train six days a week, not always kicking the footy. We do a lot of recovery during the week...it’s hard work, but I love it.” Even with a strict training schedule, Bryce says his ‘pre-game-day’ ritual happens before every game without fail. With a carb-fuelled energy

boost, he starts with Weet-bix for breakfast, subway for lunch, spaghetti for dinner and a gatorade to wash it all down. When asked if he enjoys the amount of female attention that comes with being a footballer the athlete remains true to his childhood sweetheart. “that’s definitely not the case,” he laughs. “I got beat with the ugly stick at birth, but I am lucky enough that my beautiful partner Zoe can see through that. We have been together four years now so I am very settled and lucky to have her.” With an undeniable talent and passion for AFL, Bryce hopes to continue his football career well into the future and has his sights set firmly on winning a premiership. Q Energy &A
HOME ENERGY
with Empyreal Energy
Save on your power bills and feel good about the earth while you’re doing it. Solar energy is now gaining momentum as the best supplier of energy.
W
hen it comes to alternative ways of saving energy and conserving the planet in the process, not to mention the enormous amounts you save electricity bills, it’s no wonder buzz terms “solar power” and “solar energy” have taken on such great significance. Solar guru Alex Wheeler and his Empyreal Energy business entrepreneur, ex-Gold Coast Titans player, Josh Graham explain the importance of using solar energy. With over six years’ experience between them, these guys know a thing or two about the significance of the solar business. Get it asks Alex and Josh how solar energy benefits everyone (including good old Mother Earth), and what needs to be done to reduce our carbon footprints. What is solar power? Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity. Solar energy is the cleanest, greenest and most viable form of renewable energy available to help power your home. How does solar equipment work? Solar panels turn sunlight into electricity. The cells absorb light and produce electric voltage – solar cells do not store any electricity so all power produced is fed through an inverter, which allows home appliances to be powered. Any surplus energy is fed into the main power grid. Do solar panels still produce power on cloudy days? Yes. Just as any beach goer knows, you can still get sunburnt on a cloudy day. Similarly, solar panels will still collect energy from the sun but on a reduced basis. If my system doesn’t produce enough electricity for my household needs, do I run out of power? Absolutely not. Any additional power needed is sourced directly from the main power grid – exactly as you currently have. Can everyone use solar power? Anyone who owns a property – residential, commercial or investmen – can utilise the benefits of solar power. Why should we use solar power? What are its benefits? There are many benefits to sustainable solar power, these include; protecting you and your family from rising power costs, reducing your www.getitmagazine.com.au
Getit_june11_57_energy.indd 57
carbon footprint, increasing the value of your property and being paid by your electricity provider for the power which you generate. Are there government rebates available? There are various incentives available to property owners. Upfront discounts of up to 60 per cent, for one, as well as ongoing incentives for property owners who have installed their systems. What do I need to understand about the installation of the system and who installs it? When agreeing to utilise solar power you need to be informed – some questions to ask are: – Is the designer and installer accredited? – What is the accreditation number? – How many system have they installed and how often? – Do the modules and inverters meet Australian standards? – Will my metre box support a solar system? Who stocks these products? Products are available from many wellknown, and not so well-known, international
57
manufacturers. It is important to understand that warranties will be well-supported for the life of the product. How do I get professional advice on what is best for my property and me? Firstly, an on-site appraisal from an expert is essential. A professional consultant will meet with you to discuss your personal requirements and what you wish to achieve. A personal and customised information pack should then be provided to you, along with the associated costs for your solution. Installation times should be short (up to two weeks) as government changes can come quick. With the constant and expensive rise in power costs, there has never a better time to capture the potential of solar with Empyreal Energy. ENTERTAINMENT REVIEW
Spine-tingling spectacular Battering the Bard at The Arts Centre Gold Coast Battering the Bard is a play that tackles the struggles of actors trying to make their mark. Toss in some insanity, a cleaner and a bit of Shakespeare and you have a very amusing performance.
It’s gory, it’s grotesque, and the raunch factor is off the scale! Redrum Cabaret is Dracula’s latest theatre production, flaunting fleshy choreography, comedy and a night of heart-throbbing horror. Get it caught up with Richard ‘Spine’ Marcionis to get the goss behind the scenes. What can audiences expect from the new show? It’s great thrillertainment. Redrum Cabaret pays homage to Bgrade horror films in true Dracula’s style. Huge rock production numbers, burlesque routines, gothic magic illusions, high-flying aerial guitars, we even do some iceskating on stage! What inspired the production? Redrum is inspired by those horror films we all grew up with. What is it about Redrum that keeps thrills?

Redrum Cabaret differs from any previous shows in that it’s bigger. Every year, we take it to another level. From the minute you arrive, to the very end, there’s something to see and do. All the senses are touched upon. The costumes in this show are sexy, lots of leather and lace. Plus there are the usual characters...even Frankenstein’s monster gets a look in this show!

6Secrets
to a healthy pain free body!
Each year, right here in our community, thousands of people experience episodes of asthma, digestive problems, back & neck pain, hormonal problems, sciatica, constant headaches, and more… problems that deeply affect their joy and happiness….and most people take a “pain killer” to cover up their pain... or some people actually ignore their problem hoping it will just go away. These two decisions will only cause more problems. By treating the symptoms and not getting to the cause, you maybe actually creating more problems for yourself. But until now, you didn’t know. You just lacked the necessary information to get and keep yourself healthy AND pain-free. SECRET 1: Your nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ, and system in your body...especially your Immune System.
vertebrae) and how it’s affecting your overall health and well being! (It’s quite amazing. Your body will show us visible signs of why you’ve been in pain or sick.)
SECRET #5: The power of the “ADJUSTMENT”!
Ron Pero, head of cancer research at the University of Lund, Sweden and Chief of Cancer Research at New York Preventive Research Centre says that restoration and correction of the spine can increase the strength of your immune system by 200% - 400%!!
SECRET 3: The secret of Nutrition:
Well, the magic of putting the vertebrae back into alignment so we can reconnect 100% of the normal exchange of information from the brain to the rest of the body so you have optimum function is called an ADJUSTMENT. This little-known (and virtually ignored) treatment flat out WORKS better than anything else I’ve ever studied. And I’ve seen it work on thousands of people with all types of pain and health problems. I use techniques - all PROVEN scientifically to work and all 100% “natural” that help return vertebrae back to where they belong. And, the most amazing part is:
Your spinal cord “links” your brain to the rest of your body, and makes everything work as a ‘System’. Why should you care? Webster’s Dictionary: “Health is a condition of wholeness in which all of the organs of the body are functioning 100% all of the time.” Well, what if something disrupts this “vital link”? Do you think you’d have some problems? Maybe some asthma, ear infections or sinus troubles? Maybe pain, tingling or numbness?
In today’s world the quantity of food required to feed the masses has altered the soil. The once mineral rich, vitamin rich soil has been depleted. Just eating the right foods is not that easy for a lot of people. We’ll teach you about the age old secrets of power nutrients to give you maximum energy, decreased stress, and a stronger immune system at our free half hour health workshops. Call to receive your complimentary tickets.
IF YOUR SPINE WAS ON YOUR FACE
Your vertebrae protect your spine from damage or harm and also allow you to twist, turn, bend, and move around without much restriction. But, sometimes these “guardians” get knocked out of place. For example: The birthing process... falling while learning how to walk...poor posture… lifting…twisting, car accidents, playing contact sports, driving for long periods of time, etc.
SECRET 2: Posture is the window to the spine!
What are we looking for? You guessed it: A DYSFUNCTIONAL NERVOUS SYSTEM! AND WE CAN FIND OUT EVERYTHING WE NEED TO KNOW IN JUST 15 – 20 MINUTES! We’ll tell you if we find any subluxations (misaligned
THIS WHOLE PROCESS DOESN’T HURT ONE BIT!
SECRET #6: Consistency is the key!
Consider this - The “guardians” of your spinal cord are THE VERTEBRAE!
The first step to eliminating your pain is a thorough examination by someone who really knows what to look for! We want to know things like what falls you suffered as a child, what sports you may have played, what you do for a living, and so on. This “vital information” will usually give us the secret clues and answers to some of your health problems. The next thing is, of course, a through chiropractic examination. But this is unlike any “traditional” examination. This is a very specific Chiropractic examination. We look carefully at your posture with digital photography and take very specific spinal X-rays to allow us to look inside of you to see how well aligned you are.
Remember we talked about ALIGNMENT? Remember how we said that if you’re not properly aligned, your immune system, your brain - your entire body functions at less than 100%?
YOU WOULD TAKE BETTER CARE OF IT
SECRET #4: Once we find the “problem” We’ll tell you HOW TO FIX IT!
Once we find out which vertebrae are out of place (A subluxation) we can correct them and gently restore them to normal alignment. Even more importantly, we will provide a tailored program of unique exercises so that the spine remains in its healthy position.
How many times have you ignored your pain and symptoms?...Or allowed your pain to get covered up with drugs? If medicine was able to get us healthy, nobody would ever get sick! • Create a better sense of wellness • Begin a program that will attack the cause of your pain, while relieving your symptons • Start saving money by ending over-thecounter drugs that don’t work and have side effects of their own • End the cycle of temporary relief and start a lifetime of better health today I see a surprisingly wide variety of health problems, including, but not limited too: • Headaches, Migraines • Pain, tingling, and weakness • Neck Pain • Burning into the extremities • Colic, Asthma and ear infections • Arthritic problems • Low Back Pain • Athletic problems • Sciatica • Digestion problems Our goal is to make your family’s experience with us as pleasurable and informative as possible.
Yours for better health, Dr Anthony Golle (Chiropractor) Dr Adrian Osipiv (Chiropractor) Dr Mark Illguth (Chiropractor)

SPOTLIGHT LAST WORD
JESSICA MARAIS Rafters, Romance, Rising star.
RAFTERS:
Jessica Marais; a name synonymous with style, glamour and grace. The blonde bombshell is the girl behind Rachel Rafter in Seven’s hit show Packed to the Rafters. Since 2008, 1.9 million viewers have welcomed Marais and her onscreen family into their lounge rooms each week, making it Australia’s most watched television program. Rachel Rafter is the go-getter, bubbly daughter of the Rafter family, much like Marais’ own personal character. Rebecca Gibney, who is extremely close to 26-year-old Marais and plays her onscreen mum, says the actress is much more level-headed and talented than she was at that age. In 2009, Marais won two Logies for her performance on Rafters. She took home statues for ‘Most Popular New Female Talent’ and the prestigious Graham Kennedy Award for ‘Most Outstanding New Talent.’ We have seen Marais grow from strength-to-strength, challenging her onscreen alias to great lengths as she makes her footprint in the acting world. Sadly, Rafters fans will wave goodbye to Rachel this month as Marais packs her bags to try her luck in Hollywood.
RISING STAR:
Originally born in South Africa, Marais and her family moved to Canada and New Zealand, before settling in Perth when she was nine. She graduated from Sydney’s Dramatic Art School in 2007 and by 2008, Marais was on her way to stardom. Featuring in films like Two Fists One Heart and Needle where she won best supporting actress at the British Horror Film Festival and a role in American series Legend of the Seeker. But, it’s local television drama Packed to the Rafters that has made her a household name. Not only did Marais walk away from the 2009 TV Week Logie Awards with two statues under her arm, but the likeable star was also nominated for the Gold Logie this year. With her sights set on the big screen, the Aussie talent has ventured to the unforgiving playground of Hollywood where she could one day follow in the gilded footsteps of Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts and Cate Blanchett. Words: Georja Ryan
