The Global Miller blog is an online offshoot of Grain and Feed Milling Technology magazine. While the bi-monthly magazine covers milling technology issues in-depth, the Global Miller takes a lighter approach. Our columnists have a keen eye for the most interesting, relevant and (let’s face it) bizarre milling stories from across the world. Each weekday we scour the internet for top-notch news and package it for your perusal in one neat daily digest. The Global Millers are also massive fans of industry events and shows and can often be found out on the road. Here they share stories (and photos) from their travels and, being unable to keep a secret, share details of upcoming events. But the Global Miller is your space too; feel free to comment and share your views.

Updated Canadian Grain Commission services, service standards and fees take effect
Changes to the Canadian Grain Commission's services, service standards and fees have begun. These changes are as the result of changes to the Canada Grain Act and the Canada Grain Regulations and a review of the fees charged for services and licences. "On behalf of my colleagues at the Canadian Grain Commission, I would like to thank grain producers, licensed companies and others in Canada's grain industry who worked with us to put operational changes in place. A lot of hard work happened behind the scenes to ensure a smooth transition. What a great example of how everyone in Canada's grain industry works as a team to reach a common goal," said Elwin Hermanson, chief commissioner. Changes to the Canada Grain Act were part of the Jobs and Growth Act, 2012 and were aimed at streamlining the Canadian Grain Commission's operations. These changes also necessitated related amendments to the Canada Grain Regulations. A full schedule of updated fees and services standards available here.

However, the cow in question never existed. Funded by Google co-founder Sergey Brin, the burger is made up of more than 20,000 muscle fibres from cow stem cells grown over threemonth period in a lab at Maastrict University, the Netherlands. The fibres were extracted from individual culture wells and then pressed together into a recognisable burger patty. Although in its infancy, the technology could be a sustainable way of meeting rise demand for meat. However, critics have suggested that simply eating less meat would be an easier alternative. During a taste test at press conference in London today, the burger was well-received by dinners who praised its authentic texture. The one criticism seemed to be the lack of fat! The next stage of the research is to improve the taste and appearance. At present, scientists can only make very small quantities of meat; larger portions would require a artificial circulatory systems to distribute nutrients and oxygen. So feed millers won't be out of a job any time soon. Watch a video of the taste test.
Amino acid digestibility of heat damaged distillers dried grains with solubles fed to pigs
The production of corn distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) involves a drying step in which temperature may reach 500°C or greater. The application of heat and moisture to feedstuffs results in the Maillard reaction, which reduces the concentration and digestibility of amino acids. Lysine's chemical structure makes it particularly susceptible to the Maillard reaction. However, during the acid hydrolysis step of amino acid analysis, some lysine is recovered from Maillard products, but this lysine cannot be utilised by the animals, and thus, the amount of digestible lysine in a sample may be overestimated. Therefore, methods other than simple lysine analysis must be used when assessing feed that may be heat damaged. An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of heat damage on the digestibility of crude protein and amino acids in corn DDGS fed to growing pigs. A second objective of the experiment was to develop regression equations to predict the concentration of standardised ileal digestible (SID) amino acids in DDGS. Experimental design Ten growing pigs with an average initial body weight of 53.5 kg were surgically equipped with a T-cannula in the distal ileum and fed one of five diets. Corn DDGS from a single source was separated into four batches; the first batch was not autoclaved, and the others were autoclaved at 130°C for 10, 20, or 30 minutes. The concentrations of acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), lignin, ash, reducing sugars, furosine, and acid detergent insoluble nitrogen (ADIN), and the colors of the DDGS determined as L* (lightness), a* (redness), and b* (yellowness) were measured in each batch. Four diets that contained each of the four batches of DDGS were formulated. DDGS was the only source of crude protein and amino acids in the diets. A nitrogen-free diet was used to determine the endogenous losses of crude protein and amino acids. Ileal digesta were collected after a fiveday adjustment period to the diets, and analysed for protein and amino acids to determine values for apparent and standardised ileal digestibility of crude protein and amino acids in each batch of DDGS. NAMA commends FDA for defining "Gluten Free"
The North American Millers’ Association (NAMA) has commended the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for clearly defining “glutenfree.” The definition is important for consumers’ understanding and industry usage of the term gluten-free. Under the FDA definition, oats may be used as an ingredient in a food labeled as "gluten-free" provided that the food contains less than 20 ppm gluten. Oat producers who take the necessary steps to limit the gluten content of oat containing products now have a mechanism to communicate that benefit to consumers. Guidance on whether oats should be consumed by individuals with coeliac disease has been controversial for many years. NAMA appreciates FDA’s thoughtful consideration of the nutritional contribution of oats in the diets of coeliac patients and commends FDA for not including oats on the list of prohibited grains. Gluten-free diets are critical for people with coeliac disease and gluten intolerance. They are also helpful for those with allergies to wheat. There is no scientific evidence that suggests a gluten-free diet can provide health benefits for the general population. Research has shown that gluten is actually helpful for healthy gut bacteria in individuals who can tolerate it. For the vast majority, going gluten-free is unnecessary. Feed Adviser Register discounted rate until OctobAgricultural Industries Confederation (AIC) has called on feed advisers and animal nutritionists to register for its Feed Adviser Register (FAR) and take advantage of the discount available until the end of October. AIC members applying before that date will qualify for a rate of £60 compared to £70, while non-members will pay £95 as opposed to £105.

The Register, which was launched in May this year, has already attracted more than 700 applications. It is designed to assure the standards of feeding advice provided to livestock farmers, particularly in terms of addressing the needs of the Greenhouse Gas Action Plan. FAR aims to provide a way for livestock advisers to demonstrate professional competence. It also demonstrates to Government that industry is actively addressing the challenges within the Greenhouse Gas Action Plan to reduce emissions from livestock.
www.brabender.com
John Kelley, managing director of AIC services said, “We are pleased with the response to the Register to date and would urge those who haven’t registered yet to do so. We believe that membership of FAR will benefit feed advisers and animal nutritionists, and will provide a high degree of assurance for livestock producers.” Feed advisers and animal nutritionists with two years or more proven experience can join the Register as full members. For those with less experience and new entrants, there is a ‘development’ status registration. On-going membership will require verification of core competencies. More information... Feed processing

In the past few years, the market has seen a consumer demand despite being a new development in agriculture. “In these value-added markets, the primary cost of producing a pig is the same as in the regular, commodity market; it’s the cost of the feed. Feed costs have gone up so much that it compromises about 65 percent of the cost of the production of any animal,” said John Mabry, animal science professor at Iowa State University. Read more... Skandia Elevator unveils silo discharge sweep conveyor During this years Cereals 2013 exhibition, which took place back in June, BDC Systems highlighted Skandia Elevator's new silo discharge sweep conveyor. Represented by BDC systems in the UK, Skandia offers system technology whereby complete installation is balanced and integrated to ensure trouble free operation. The introduction of this new product effectively completes a full Skandia grain handling system, from the intake pit to the discharge of the silo. The new silo discharge sweep conveyor has been designed to match all other elements of a Skandia system to ensure reliability in operation. It will clean any silo virtually completely, thereby saving time and money. Manual cleaning is significantly reduced ensuring grain producers need to spend much less time in the hostile working environment inside a silo. In designing the silo discharge sweep conveyor, Skandia has also recognised the need for energy efficiency. This latest innovation will consume significantly less energy than existing competitive products and uses a chain and flight recovery system as opposed to the conventional screw auger. By adding the new Skandia product to its existing range, BDC Systems is underlining its position as the UK's leading one stop shop for grain drying, cleaning, storage, handling, ventilation, milling and mixing equipment. In addition to Skandia, BDC Systems represents other world leading manufacturers and suppliers including Svegma, Zanin and BMSilos.
Russia 2013 wheat harvest to total 52.1 million tonnes
According to a July forecast conducted by analysts at the APK-Inform Agency, the general production of wheat in Russia in 2013 is set to reach 52.1 millionn tonnes, an increase of 38.1 percent compared with to last year. Low-scale losses of winter grain crops in the winter-spring period (nearly 6 percent) led to an increase in the remaining areas of crop compared with the previous season. At the same time, the general planted areas of wheat totaled 25.1 million ha, up 1.7 percent compared with last season, despite a slight decline of the areas under spring grains, analysts said. According to experts, in terms of expansion of the planted areas, the wheat yield will also rise to 2.22 t/ha, against 1.77 t/ha in the the previous season. It should be noted that the current results of the harvesting campaign show a 29 percent increase in wheat yields compared with last year. However, analysts added that the developing unfavorable weather conditions in the major grain-producing regions and results of the harvesting campaign in the Siberian Federal District could result in significant adjustments to grain harvests forecasts.

The event takes place from the 29th October to the 1st November 2013, at the Novosibirsk Expo Centre, Russia. At the first edition in 2012, more than 100 companies from 13 countries presented their products and solutions to 5,000 visitors. Main Topics: Agricultural machinery and tractors Farming equipment Plant breeding and protection Livestock breeding and animal husbandry Meat & dairy processing Milling & grain processing Technology for fruits & vegetables New investments in Russia´s agriculture Russia plans to increase the domestic agricultural production by 40% by 2020. The program sees investments of 19 billion euros for the purchase of new machinery and the modernisation of the agricultural sector. As Russia´s domestic industry cannot meet the high need, foreign manufacturers can benefit from these new export opportunities. The demand is especially high for agricultural machinery, animal husbandry technologies, equipment for slaughtering, greenhouses, cold storage houses, grain storage facilities and biomass units. Novosibirsk Region Among the Russian regions, Siberia in particular is in need of modern machinery and technology. Novosibirsk Region harbours the largest arable lands in Russia and ranks among Russia´s top ten agricultural producers. The regional agriculture focuses on grain crops, potatoes and vegetables. Animal husbandry plays a significant role in Novosibirsk Region as well and concentrates on beef and dairy livestock, pig, poultry and sheep farming. Due to the Siberian climatic conditions - long cold winters and short hot summers - the vegetation period is relatively short and therefore requires efficient machinery.

Level measurement
In Nature Genetics this week, Japanese researchers presented a study on a gene that gives rice plants deeper roots and could subsequently triple yields during droughts. The study shows that by pointing roots down instead of sideways, the Deeper Rooting 1 (DRO1) gene results in roots that are nearly twice as deep as those of standard rice varieties. "If rice adapts to or avoids drought conditions using deeper roots, it can get water and nutrients from the deep soil layers," said Yusaku Uga, researcher at Japan's National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences (NIAS) and the study's lead author. Using lower protein wheat for bread making
The level and characteristics of protein in wheat have a major bearing on its suitability for use in bread making – small differences can have a significant effect on final product quality. In order to get the necessary type and level of protein into wheat flour, the grower needs to control fertiliser input, allowing for and reacting to changes in weather conditions. If lower–protein flour was acceptable, this would simplify operations In the latest blog from UK research and development company, Campden BRI, Gary Tucker, head of the baking and cereal processing department, discusses how this can be achieved. Speaking at a recent producer meeting at Great Dunmow, Essex, UK, Ed Sutcliffe, geneticist at pig-breeding company, ACMC, said that while the number of pigs reared per sow per year wasn’t insignificant, efficient feed conversion was crucial. British-produced food would run out today
British food supplies would run out today if the country had to rely on domestically produced goods. The stats come from the National Farmers' Union (NFU) who calculated that if all the food the UK produces in a year was stored on January 1, it would have been eaten by now. This figure is a sharp fall in self-sufficiency. In 1991, the UK produced 75 percent of its food itself, today it is just 62 percent. The NFU has called for greater support for British farmers including better technology and measures to reduce price volatilitly. The arguments for increased self-sufficiency in food production make sense on a theoretical level. However, is it realistic to expect Britain to be able to produce all of its food 'in house'? There are some products which just won't grow on British soil. Consumers are used to being able to buy products from all over the world in their local supermarkets. I predict that these shopper will be unwilling to sacrifice the exotic foods in their shopping trollies in favour of 100 percent home-produced foods. More information on the NFU report...

GM rice is inching closer to becomining a reality as scientists in the Philippines are about to submit 'golden rice' to the authorities for biosafety evaluations. According to a new report from the Overseas Development Institute (ODI), cheap rice may well be a thing of the past. The institute has revealed that increasing wages amongst Asian agricultural workers have helped drive higher prices, and may yet have a game-changing effect on global poverty rates.

Until recently rising populations across Asia have meant that there has been a reserve army of labour in rural areas willing to work for low wages. Urbanisation and industrial growth, however, are beginning to provide alternatives to low-paid farm work. Rural wages for Indian farm labourers have risen by around a third in the last five years.

“This report should cause people to sit up and take note. The drift towards higher prices for one of the world’s basic food staples has farreaching implications. Millions of agricultural labourers stand to gain from higher wages, with potentially huge benefits for poverty reduction. But many poor households will also face higher food bills – and countries in Africa will face higher food import costs,” said Kevin Watkins, ODI director. High prices are a cause for concern in parts of Africa, particularly in coastal West Africa where urban consumers have grown accustomed to relatively low-cost rice imports from Asia and now face a threat to their food security. “This is a story of winners and losers. It is good news in the long run as a step towards the end of global poverty, but it might not be such good news in the short run those who rely on rice for a large part of their daily diet,” said Steve Wiggins, report author and ODI research fellow.
http://www.perendale.com
Early 2013 saw prices top $550 a tonne, double the level in 2000, singling out rice as the only cereal not to see prices fall back to pre-2008 spike levels. The sustained higher prices are the consequence of a ‘triple squeeze’ on the cost of producing rice: increased stockholding by Asian rice producers such as Thailand and Vietnam, high fuel and fertiliser costs and increased wages amongst agricultural workers in Asia.

Free, unofficial grain grade with Harvest Sample Program
With this year's harvest starting in Western Canada, producers have until November 1, 2013 to send in a grain sample to get a free unofficial grade and quality information through the Harvest Sample Program. If you haven't participated before, sign up by October 15 to make sure you receive your Harvest Sample Program kit in time to send a sample this fall. "Our Harvest Sample Program is a voluntary program that gives producers important information about their grain at no cost to them. It also helps promote the sale of Canadian grain by providing customers with scientific information about the quality of this year's harvest," said Elwin Hermanson, chief commissioner for the Canadian Grain Commission. Easy to participate Participating in the Harvest Sample Program is easy and starts with signing up to receive your free kit, which includes postage-paid envelopes and instructions for sending in your sample. Producers who send in a grain sample are also eligible to win prizes, and the earlier you send in your samples, the greater your chances of winning.

CBH rebates to reduce storage and handling fees
The CBH Group has announced its storage and handling charges for 2013-14, which will see grower fees reduced due to the introduction of two new rebates under the Grower Patronage Rebate Program.
20
THE GLOBAL MILLER | August 2013
David Capper, general manager of operations at CBH Group, said that overall charges were increasing by three per cent to reflect rising input costs such as labour and electricity, but the 2013 operations rebate in conjunction with the investment rebate would offset the increase in fees for growers making them lower than last season. “The CBH Group is committed to managing any increase in charges in a sustainable and transparent manner. We must be realistic about inflationary and cost pressures on our business as we try to balance this with our aim to keep storage and handling fees as low as we can for growers,” he said. “So we are delighted that the rebate program is able to help us to achieve this.” This year’s Grower Patronage Rebate Program includes an Operations Rebate of AUD$0.85 per tonne, made feasible from favourable State tax rulings in 2013 that recognised the contribution CBH makes as a co-operative to the development of the Australian agricultural industry.

This is in addition to the Investment Rebate which was announced earlier this year with a rebate of $0.60 - $0.90 per tonne, made possible by the returns from the investment in the Asian Interflour mills. The final amount of the investment rebate will be determined by the middle of September once the harvest size is more certain. “The total storage and handling costs for 2013/14 will be $29.30, but once the two rebates are deducted the fees will be between $27.55 and $27.85 per tonne based on wheat transported through the Grain Express system. Last year storage and handling costs were $28.45per tonne,” said Mr Capper.

In addition to the rebates, the CBH Group has restructured its charges. “We are operating in a changing environment with increased competition and we need to provide an alternative to Grain Express,” he said. “The restructure of the charges will allow us to unbundle fees and offer a Grain Express and non-Grain Express option while ensuring that growers and marketers using the Grain Express system will in no way incur additional costs created by the non-Grain Express pathway.” More information...

AIC urges legislators to rethink approach to regulation
The UK Government and EU must look beyond single-issue legislation in driving policy forward in the future according to The Agriculture Industries Confederation (AIC). It makes this point as part of a submission to the Government with regards to the balance of legislative power between the EU and UK, and its effect on agricultural industries. This is in response to one of a number of calls for evidence as part of an overall Government review. “The Government is currently conducting this review on the balance of legislative power between the EU and the UK, and its effect on the UK’s interests. Work will continue throughout 2014 and will cover 32 topics. The call for evidence on environment and climate change has just closed, and the call for evidence on agriculture begins in autumn. Clearly it is important that AIC makes the views of members known in the areas that affect us,” says Jane Salter, head of environment policy at AIC. “Many people in the industry will be aware of the effect that legislation such as that covering crop protection products, the Nitrates Directive, and the Industrial Emissions Directive have or could have. AIC and its partners are also in the process of preparing additional evidence on the threats that the current legislative approach has on business interests, the sustainable intensification of agriculture and the development of future opportunities." “Single-issue legislation can result in unforeseen outcomes – solving one problem but creating another. We need alternative approaches that take into account the bigger picture and produce multiple benefits. After all that is what sustainable intensification is all about. We are adopting that approach in agriculture and we need our legislators to do the same.” AIC has called for regular reviews of EU and UK legislation and outlined a four-point plan: More broadly assess the cumulative as well as individual effects of legislation Examine evidence of where legislation fails to drive innovative solutions which could otherwise produce more food, and at the same time achieve environmental protection Consider opportunities for alternative policy drivers which could deliver multiple benefits beyond that which can be achieved by a so termed single-issue legislative approach Investigate greater UK decision-making on specific and relevant outcomes for regional environmental quality

APK-Inform increased the forecast of grain production in Ukraine in 2013/14
Analysts from the APK-Inform Agency increased the estimations of the general grain harvest in Ukraine in 2013 to the level of 57.1 mln tonnes, a decrease of 5.5 percent compared with the previous month estimations (54.1 mln tonnes), and the index exceeds the record high grain production volumes, observed in 2011/12 MY (56.7 mln tonnes).
24
THE GLOBAL MILLER | August 2013
APK-Inform analysts increased the estimation mainly due to the growth of maize production forecast, which planted areas faced quite favorable agro-climatic conditions in the summer, assisting to improvement of the grain yield. For example, the experts increased the yield index from 5.29 t/ha, expected in June 2013, to 5.95 t/ha. As a result, the grain production forecast was increased from 23.9 mln tonnes, expected in June, to 26.2 mln tonnes. At the same time, the forecasted index significantly (up 14.6 percent) exceeds the record harvest of maize in Ukraine, made in 2011 (22.8 mln tonnes). The estimation of maize planted and harvested areas remained unchanged. As for the forecast of other grain crops, the indices were slightly increased compared with the June estimations: wheat production is forecasted at 21.4 mln tonnes (as opposed to 20.5 mln tonnes in June) with the average yield of 3.25 t/ha, barley - 7.3 mln tonnes (7.15 mln tonnes) with the yield of 2.31 t/ha.
Quality Control and Quality Assurance in Flour Milling
Kansas State University’s (KSU) International Grains Program is hosting a new course for the milling industry. This unique five-week, online course will highlight the quality control and quality assurance aspects of the flour milling process. This course is focused toward operative millers and quality assurance personnel, but would also be helpful for plant personnel at any level of experience in all parts of the milling process. “At Kansas State and IGP, we recognize the need to expand our training programs to include more online courses,” says Mark Fowler, IGP associate director and milling specialist. He adds, “This course on quality control is our second distance education course developed and will be the first course offered as we launch our new KSU Milling Specialist credential program.”
The right storage solution starts with the right advice.

He adds, this professional development, non-credit course grants one continuing education unit (CEU) upon completion. It is offered as an individual course or as the first step toward the completion of the KSU Milling Specialist credential. “The goal of Quality Control/Quality Assurance in Flour Milling is to enhance the knowledge and skills of all those involved in the milling process,” Fowler says. To accomplish this, Fowler will co-instruct the course with Rebecca Miller, research assistant professor and director of wheat quality. Fowler has expertise in technical flour milling, plant operations management and food and employee safety programs from his time in the industry and in the classroom. His lessons for this course focus on the impact of the milling principles on flour quality, sampling procedures and process control. Miller has a diverse background of knowledge in the areas of wheat and flour quality and baking and cereal chemistry. She will cover topics including a review of wheat classes and uses, flour quality characteristics analysis, mixing property analysis, dough analysis and flour additives. This is just one example of the trainings offered through IGP. In addition to flour milling and grain processing, IGP offers trainings in the areas of feed manufacturing and grain management, and grain marketing and risk management. European team checks out Northern and desert durum crops European flour millers and food processors seek out the highest quality wheat each year to produce their premium pasta products. That is why U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) is bringing a European trade team to the United States August 24 - 31 to demonstrate how U.S. durum – the hardest of the six U.S. wheat classes – matches their needs. 26
THE GLOBAL MILLER | August 2013
The team’s seven members are procurement and technical managers of the leading Italian, German and Portuguese durum millers and pasta processors, all of which import most of their wheat directly. During visits to North Dakota, Montana, Arizona and California, the team will learn about 2013/14 northern and Desert® durum crop outlook and research. Farmers in both the Northern Plains and Southwest grow durum, although there are distinct characteristics between the varieties grown in each region. In each state, the team will hear from wheat researchers, tour grain elevators and visit with farmers in the field. “The team is looking for information on advances in wheat breeding, improved gluten strength and reduced cadmium uptake and sustainability,” said Rutger Koekoek, marketing specialist, based in the USW Rotterdam Office, who will accompany the team. “The program for this team will provide an up-to-date, firsthand picture of U.S. durum wheat quality and boost their confidence in the reliability and value of the U.S. grain marketing system.” The European durum trade team is sponsored in part by the Montana Wheat & Barley Committee and the Arizona Grain Research & Promotion Council and funding from market development programs administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service. USW also collaborated with the North Dakota Wheat Commission and California Wheat Commission on this team. USW is the industry’s market development organization working in more than 100 countries. Its mission is to “develop, maintain, and expand international markets to enhance the profitability of U.S. wheat producers and their customers.” USW activities are made possible through producer checkoff dollars managed by 19 state wheat commissions and cost-share funding provided by FAS. USW maintains 17 offices strategically located around the world to help wheat buyers, millers, bakers, wheat food processors and government officials understand the quality, value and reliability of all six classes of U.S. wheat.

The 6th Protein Summit brings together the different industries using and producing proteins: from food, feed and aquaculture to pet food industries and food ingredient suppliers of animal and vegetable origin. The global need for protein is eminent. What kind of opportunities are available in short, mid and long term? How will markets and industries develop? What are the key drivers? Where can you co-operate and find new technology solutions for sustainability and health? Bridge2Food hopes to contribute to solving these issues with providing a protein platform with the right people and insights. The major players in the different food and other industries will be present 24 & 25 September in Rotterdam: well over 100 attendees and speakers. GFMT spoke to Gerard Klein Essink, CEO, Bridge2Food, the Netherlands, about what the Summit hopes to achieve. Why is sustainability so important in the food and feed industries? Sustainability is a key priority for the industry. With increasing demand for high quality protein the industry needs to ensure sustainability to meet the growing demand. All industries are fishing in the same pond. While the food industry has been making attempts at moving sustainability ahead, it should be recognised that much more needs to be done and can be done to secure future supply of raw materials. It is important to connect and close food chains as there will be a lot more pressure from consumers, retailers and governments on food waste, which will also affect the operating conditions in the food industry in a positive way.

THE GLOBAL MILLER | August 2013
How relevant are cross industry networks? At Bridge2Food we work on different platforms, such as new trends, ingredients and technologies. We often see that those companies, who look at the broader picture and who have an overview of the developments in different sectors, can move faster and they are then ahead of the game. For instance, technology companies with a longstanding experience in the dairy industries with separation technologies, want to work with vegetable protein industries and their customers. They have the capabilities and the ideas, but what is lacking it the know-how of the applications and the industry needs. Grain, feed and food manufacturers, who acknowledge this situation, can turn their challenge into an opportunity and cooperation and connect the dots. Reducing food waste: what do you expect? Food waste reduction is the next big thing that is going to influence the food, feed and agricultural industries. The UN has recently announced that this is going to be a major theme for the world to solve in view of the growing imbalance between poor and rich nations. It will be more and more difficult for lesser developed countries to afford protein rich ingredients and protein foods as supply is getting shorter and more expensive. Western governments, retailers, manufacturers and researchers are working on a common agenda. It is not only about enabling technologies, but also about regulation and thinking outside the box. At the Protein Summit, Wageningen University will provide the industry an overview of the what´s happening in Europe and how and where companies can shape new co-operations. Improving healthy living with more nutritious and high protein foods: here to stay? Certainly, high protein foods is the thing in the USA at this moment. No industry can do without a high protein equivalent of their current product range. Consumers are being educated on what protein is and which benefits can be obtained. This awareness is key to sustainable growth. European markets will follow, yet it may take a little while before it will be as big as in the USA. Another good example of innovation opportunities in health with new technologies is germinating pulses. The Swiss based company Buhler has recently launched this technology. Pre-germinating makes pulses and pulse flours up to 6 times more healthy and cooking more convenient due to the shorter cooking times. How can the industry source sustainable feed materials? The key is to find other sources that do not put further stress on marine resources. A lot of work is already being done on developing new soybean traits without anti-nutritional factors. We are very pleased that soy expert John Baize, who has been monitoring global soy demand and supply, will share his forecasts and what will drive the soy industry. New opportunities will also come from other pulse sectors such as Canadian pea growing, research and processing. This industry needs direction and is looking for strategic partnerships. How fast new protein sources like insect proteins and Rubisco will contribute to the global agenda, will also depend on increasing efforts of industry demand and cooperation. How did you go about setting up the Summit? We always work closely together with industry experts to make a new challenging agenda with great content. This is the 6th time we are hosting a Protein Summit and each time we strive for a higher quality. Prof. Rob Hamer, Vice President of Unilever Research is the Summit Chair, seconded by 3 experts, who are leading a special track. The track chair on future supply and demand is Jeroen Leffelaar, Global head of Rabobank International, the health track is chaired by Ronald Visschers, Business Manager at research organization TNO and your editor and colleague Roger Gilbert of Perendale Publishing.

New! GFMT article: FEED FOCUS: Pelleted feed technology for dairy cows
www.brabender.com
In this article, Amanda Zhou of Allance Machinery, China discusses pellet feed production for dairy cows. Pellet feed production technology was first introduced in China in the 1930s. Since then, pelleting has become one of the most common techniques in animal feed processing. Pellets had lots of advantages over crumbles, such as less dust, no grading, balanced animal nutrition, enhanced feed intake and easy storage and transportation. Read the full article here.

HGCA investment aims to help update nutrient management recommendations
HGCA is investing £700,000 in research to help update nutrient management recommendations. Commencing this autumn and focusing on nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and sulphur (S), the four research projects are being conducted by ADAS in collaboration with 12 industry partners who will contribute a further £250,000 in funding.
32
THE GLOBAL MILLER | August 2013
James Holmes, research manager for crop nutrition at HGCA, said, “The Fertiliser Manual (RB209) is a crucial source of information. But as farming practices move on, it is essential that nutrient management recommendations keep pace with change. This new work will play a valuable role in updating nutrient management information.” The first project extends current research to help growers maintain an appropriate level of P in the soil. Holmes said, “In the last 30 years, fewer fields have received P treatment as growers take ‘P holidays’. This, together with the increasing cost of P fertilisers and environmental pressures, has stimulated a lot of debate on the management of P. “Recent research has shown how P management may need to be adapted in certain soils and has confirmed that growers running down soil P to below Olsen P Index 2 could be approaching a ‘cliff edge’ of P deficiency and risk not achieving optimum yields, especially when conditions are less than ideal.” The new research will refine understanding of critical soil P levels and how to satisfy crop demand across a range of soil types, which could include applying ‘fresh P’ during the season. “The use of fresh P applications is particularly interesting and HGCA work has already demonstrated that fresh P fertiliser can be effective in raising winter wheat and oilseed rape yields in plots below Olsen P Index 2. Further P-response trials will be conducted on farms to calculate when fresh P applications could be beneficial,” commented Holmes.

Two further projects will focus on the management of N. Holmes said, “Current recommendations for N management are based on averages which fail to adequately reflect the diversity in soil types and the large variations in actual field nutrient requirements. There is also increasing evidence that N is being under-applied on some farms.”
Recruitment • AGRI-Associates
In the first N project, a series of on-farm trials will be set up to test a novel ‘strip trial’ approach, where a standard N rate is applied along with 50kg/ ha more and 50kg/ha less applied N to alternate tramlines. “We are supporting this work with soil analysis and helping growers to set up strip trials. We will help develop a robust data set to produce a better picture of N variability and the proportion of fields that require more or less N fertiliser than predicted by RB209," said Allison Grundy, GrowHow, one of the project’s industry partners. The second N project will look at the N requirements for winter barley. Holmes added, “RB209 recommendations for winter barley have not been updated for around 30 years and varieties have changed significantly over that period.
Rolls
“This project will review N management data and conduct experiments on application rate and timing for two-row, six-row and hybrid winter barley varieties.” The final project takes a look at S management. “The recent HGCA ‘yield plateau’ work found that many winter wheat and oilseed rape crops may not be receiving enough S and this could be limiting yield," said Holmes. “This new research will extend S-response trials, as well as quantify the S supply from applications of manures and biosolids. Dr Pete Berry, principal research scientist at ADAS, concluded, “The nutrient research projects have been designed with RB209 in mind. The projects, which will deliver findings over the next five years, will be made available to Defra to assist with future revisions of RB209.” More information...

On July 1, 1973, the Council inaugurated a partnership with Taiwan through the establishment of an office in Taipei, Taiwan. Forty years later, Taiwan has grown into a consistent top five market for U.S. coarse grains, and the Council enjoys widespread support from U.S. grain industry buyers and partners, and high respect throughout Taiwan. The Council has worked in Taiwan in virtually every area of demand, trade, policy and marketing of U.S. agricultural products. Taiwan has been receptive to Council initiatives in all areas of livestock industry development; value-added products such as distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS), heart-healthy barley, sorghum for beer production, and corn-based bioplastics; policy regarding biotechnology and food safety; and more. Adifo - BESTMIX® Formulation as a service
We live in a digital world. While laptops, tablets and smartphones have had some impact on feed production, there has been somewhat of a lag in producers' ability to react in a true real-time fashion in servicing their customers. In light of this, software supplier Adifo has launched a cloud based collaborative platform as an extension to BESTMIX ® , its profit driven feed formulation and recipe management system. The extension platform is bound to revolutionise the information interchange between nutrition experts and the outside world. It is hoped it will benefit all parties involved, including feed advisers, external partners and customers. The Formulation as a Service (FaaS) solution - securely implemented in the cloud - gives users online access to part of a nutrition company's BESTMIX ® database. Users can retrieve minute-precise market data, rely on up-to-date equations and use state-of-the-art formulation functionality at any time. They can also record project or customer-specific data such as purchase costs and specifications.

How it works At a typical multi-site feed facility, nutritionists are constantly tweaking and updating feed formulas for maximum results. However, by using the cloud-based BESTMIX ® Formulation as a service platform, changes can be uploaded to the core system and immediately make them available to formulators and partners off-site. Perhaps the biggest impact of the real-time basis is for the feed adviser out in the field. Instead of relying on formulation data downloads to computers, BESTMIX ® Formulation updates information and the core data platform via the cloud or mobile apps. Using this information, nutritionists can then put information on the raw material available at a site and produce a more accurate formulation for the customer. More information.
New! GFMT article: Exploring the challenge of single versus multi-enzyme dosing comparisons
In this article, Dr Helen Masey O'Neil, research manager and Tiago dos Santos, global technical manager, AB Vista, United Kingdom discuss the use of single versus multi-enzyme dosing. While the inclusion of phytases has become almost ubiquitous in monogastric feeding, both to release phosphorus and to reduce the antinutritive effect of phytate itself (superdosing), the use of enzymes to tackle issues associated with non-starch polysaccharides (NSP, i.e. fibre) remains the subject of much discussion. Since the 2013-14 marketing year, that began back in June, Brazil has emerged as the second-largest market - beaten only by China - for US wheat.
