Döscher & Döscher
The company, founded by Claas Döscher and Jörn Döscher in Hamburg, has been working in the field of industrial measurement systems since 1994. In the first 7 years of consulting and engineering, the company acted as agents for other manufacturers and integrated their measurement systems into the production plants of our customers. In 2001, due to the experience gained by Döscher & Döscher by this time, and in co-operation with the chair of high-frequency engineering of the CAU/Kiel (another measuring system laboratory), they were able to develop technology for devices apart from moisture testing & density measurement. This new technology represents the current state of the art.

Cargill – Wooster, Ohio Named 2011 Feed Mill of the Year
Cargill Animal Nutrition of Wooster, Ohio, is the 2011 Feed Mill of the Year, as named by the American Feed Industry Association and Feedstuffs, the sponsors of the annual program. Southern States Cooperative’s Winchester Mill in Winchester, Kentucky, is the runner-up. “Wooster,” as the winning plant is known, is managed by Susanna Wright, only the second female plant manager to win Feed Mill of the Year. She described of the honour, “To be recognised externally by winning AFIA’s Feed Mill of the Year is a huge accomplishment, and reflects strongly on the entire team we have in place, from production stakeholders, to sales, to administrative support Constructed in 1993, the plant was built to cater to the dairy market in Northeastern Ohio. The mill manufactures 42,000 tons of feed, split between bagged and bulk, including meals, pellets and textured feeds. Both inbound ingredients and finished feeds are tested for various quality specifications monthly, at a minimum, and all plant scales are certified externally twice a year. Once Wooster expanded to carry Nutrena bagged farmstore feeds, the plant’s territory grew to include distribution in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Kentucky. In the late 1990s, a 10,000 square foot addition to the warehouse was built to accommodate the Cargill Animal Nutrition brand family which includes Showmaster brand show feeds, Record Rack wildlife feeds and Right Now Mineral. Over the last three years, the facility has installed over US$1 million (€748,000) in new equipment to accommodate sustained growth. Read more ...

Controlling moisture at the correct level
Increase profitability with Hydronix Moisture Measurement Controlling moisture at the correct level throughout all stages of processing can be one of the biggest problems for feed and grain manufacturers. Too wet, and the raw material can become mouldy during storage or sticky during processing. Too dry and it will become brittle and turn to ‘flour’ or dust. Either circumstance leads to waste and therefore directly impacts on profit. Microwave moisture sensors are not affected by dust, colour or vapour arising from processing and have proved to be the most cost effective, reliable and easy to use method of controlling moisture in grain and feed manufacturing. Raw materials are passed across the ceramic faceplate of the sensor which radiates an extremely low powered electromagnetic microwave field. The resonant frequency of the material changes with variations in moisture content, and with 25 readings taken per second, the sensor detects changes in moisture levels almost instantaneously. This allows adjustments to the water addition process to be automatic and in real time.

A perfect system would have sensors positioned throughout all of the various elements of the processing plant. Hydronix have a range of sensors that can be positioned in a variety of different locations depending upon specific requirements. The Hydro-Probe is designed to be located in the neck of a bin, underneath the gate, or in the material on a conveyor, and takes readings as the material flows around the sensor. For applications with a high ambient temperature, the Hydro-Probe Orbiter can be mounted above belt conveyors. Finally for applications that use a screw conveyor, chute or mixer, the Hydro-Mix is a flush mounted sensor that enables the material to pass across the faceplate. Hydronix has 30 years experience in moisture measurement, and is the original developer of the digital microwave moisture measurement method. Tel: +44 1483 468900 www.hydronix.com

Feed stuffs may still contain ergot
Researchers from Ghent University Belgium, carried out a study on ergot alkaloids in cereals intended for human consumption and animal feeding. Ergot alkaloids are mycotoxins produced by fungi of the Claviceps Genus, mainly by Claviceps purpurea. Infections are mostly prevalent in cereals and wild grasses. Although nowadays effective cleaning procedures at mills allow removing up to 82 percent of ergots from grain, ergot alkaloids can still be found in feed and food commodities, sometimes at relatively high levels.
