Viterra invests in its Australian business

Canadian grains group Viterra, is to invest in ABB Grains its Australian operation, which Viterra purchased nearly two years ago for CAN$1.6 billion (€1.144 billion). Viterra acquisition of ABB was its first outside its native Canada. One of the reasons for this investment is to improve communication with grain growers, as well as transporters and to improve testing of grain quality. Viterra is also planning to expand its operations in western Victoria to allow it to package up to 250,000 tonnes of grains in containers for export. Read more ...

Ethanol sinks most in 19 months on ‘Bloodbath’ over corn supply

Ethanol futures plunged the most in 19 months in Chicago after a government report showed an unexpected increase in corn supply that would cut production costs for the biofuel. The grain-based gasoline additive fell 6.5 percent after the Agriculture Department said corn inventories remaining from last year’s harvest totaled 3.67 billion bushels as of June 1, compared with a forecast of 3.29 billion bushels by analysts in a Bloomberg News survey. “Ethanol is overreacting to the corn,” said Jim Damask, a manager at BiofuelsConnect, a Heathrow, Florida-based alternative energy broker. “It’s a bloodbath out here. It’s their main production cost.” Denatured ethanol for July delivery fell 17.8 cents to settle at US$2.555 a gallon on the Chicago Board of Trade, the steepest decline since December 2009. US corn extends losses after USDA report

US corn futures tumbled for the second day in a row on Friday after a US government report showed that corn stocks were much higher than the market had expected and farmers planted the crop on a bigger area than anticipated. The harvest month December corn contract dropped over five percent on Friday to US$5.87 per bushel, adding to Thursday's tumble and taking the contract's two-day fall to nearly 10 percent. "I think the whole market is confused about the UDSA (U.S. Department of Agriculture), supply and demand report," said Chris Kochnaski, a senior trader at Australia's Emerald Group. "There are probably some factors that could keep markets bothered such as likely Black Sea exports again and if weather in the northern harvest goes smoothly it is likely to put pressure on Aussie feed wheat," said Mr Kochanski.

Research into the digestion of organic laying hens

Research by Wageningen University's Livestock Research program has shown that current nutritional data for laying hens in the 'Feed Table of the CVB' in many cases cannot be applied to biological materials as it is based on outdated digestibility studies with adult roosters. As a result, the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture commissioned research which was conducted by the product working group on poultry meat and eggs of Bioconnect. The aim was to provide a accurate method of calculating the nutritional value of organically grown raw materials for layers. Two digestibility studies with organic layer diets were performed. Grain Stocks Report from USDA shows corn stocks are down 15% from June 2010 while soybean stocks are up 8%. All wheat stocks are down 12%. The Acreage Report showed corn planted acreage up 5% from last year, and soybean acreage down 3%. All wheat acreage is up 5%. Corn stocks in all positions on June 1, 2011 totaled 3.67 billion bushels, down 15% from June 1, 2010. Of the total stocks, 1.68 billion bushels are stored on farms, down 21% from a year earlier. Off-farm stocks, at 1.99 billion bushels, are down 9% from a year ago. The March-May 2011 quarter indicated disappearance is 2.85 billion bushels, compared with 3.38 billion bushels during the same period last year.

Corn planted area for all purposes in 2011 is estimated at 92.3 million acres, up 5% from last year, and the second-highest planted acreage in the U.S. since 1944, behind only the 93.5 million acres planted in 2007. Growers expect to harvest 84.9 million acres for grain, up 4% from last year.

Pfizer considers selling animal-health and nutrition units

Pfizer Incorporated has indicated that "it is exploring strategic options including sales and spin-offs for its animal-health and nutrition units, but will hold onto its generic-drug and consumer health-care businesses". Part of the reasons behind the consideration of selling part of its business is to hone its focus on its core business of developing and marketing prescription drugs and vaccines. The animal-health and nutrition units together generated less than 10 percent of Pfizer's 2010 revenue of US$67.8 billion (€48.203 billion). Read more ...

Two sorghum feeding trials in Egypt were carried out successfully by the US Grains Council to demonstrate the use of non-tannin in broiler feed rations and to assess the nutritive value based on actual Egyptian conditions. Egypt does produce sorghum domestically, it is of the tannin variety and it is only used for human consumption. The livestock and poultry producers have little knowledge about the benefits of non-tannin sorghum in feed rations and they have never imported non tannin sorghum variety. Read more ...

Kenyan farmers turn poisonous weed into animal feed

A weed called Prosopis juliflora, known as Mathenge was introduced more than 20 years ago to reverse soil erosion due to its extensive root system in Kenya. The plant originates from South America, was introduced in to the Baringo district (Rift Valley Province, Kenya). The plant thrives in harsh climates and spreads rapidly in arid and semi-arid areas, covering huge tracts of land and wiping out other species along the way. However, the galloping weed disfigures the jaws of livestock that feed on it due to its hard pods and causes tooth decay because of the pods’ high sugar content. In some circumstances animals have lost their tongues and even died after feeding on the weed. Its poisonous thorns also regularly cause inflammation to both humans and livestock, which takes weeks to subside, and in some cases, where infection persists untreated, has led to amputation of limbs. Africa slowly accepts genetically modified crops.

Slowly Africa is beginning to accept genetically modified (GM) crops. Kenya has become the forth country to accept gm crops as from July 1, 2011 the restrictions on GM maize and other various gm products will end. This opens the door to importation and production of gm crops. But lobby groups opposed to gene alteration, noting health concerns such as development of mutations and allergic reactions in humans, said they plan to oppose the law. "We are going to hold a demonstration in Mombasa to boycott importation and consumption of GM, " said Betty Mwasia an officer at Telum Kenya, a lobby group that advocates organic farming. Mombasa is the port city and gateway into east Africa. "We are also considering a court injunction to stop the GM shipment," she said. Read more ...

European Parliament backs return of animal feed protein

The European Parliament have backed plans to allow processed animal protein back into EU animal feed. Members voted in favour of the RothBehrendt report, which recommends allowing pigs to be fed poultry protein and poultry to be fed pig protein. The Commission's TSE Roadmap 2 proposes a possible gradual lifting of the prohibition on the feeding of processed animal proteins (PAP) to non-ruminants. Given the European Union's "protein deficit", then members back this idea, subject to strict conditions and safeguards. These include stipulating that the PAP must come from species not linked to TSE, and may be fed only to non-herbivores. Prohibitions on cannibalism must remain and only processed animal proteins fit for human consumption should be used, MEPs add. Read more ... July 12, 2011

Vicam a subsidiary of the Walters Corporation, have launched a new digital lateral flow reader for easy and fast mycotoxin quantitation called Vertu. "Regulatory levels set by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), European Union (EU) and other international regulatory bodies require that mycotoxin testing be performed at nearly every point of a product's handling and processing," said Marjorie Radlo, director of operations for Vicam. "The Vertu system for mycotoxin testing gives customers testing at the point of sampling exceptional value with fast, accurate numerical results using fewer solvents in less time. Betagro experiments with feathers in animal feed

The Agricultural Research Development Agency and Kasetsart University and Batagro Science Center Co have teamed up to develop keratines enzymes that use chicken feather waste to produce animal feed. This will help the company to utilise its large volume of feather waste and will reduce the need to import keratines enzymes, a high protein supplement. About 1,200 tons of feathers are produced as waste from Thailand's largest chicken producers and exporters. The Betagro Group had been spending about 10 million baht (â&#x201A;Ź233,000) a year to import the enzyme and with the ban on the use of antibiotics as a growth promoter in animal feed by European Union, the Betagro group has seen a chance to expand its operations. Fatty acids in feed influence calf performance

Recent research conducted on calf performance by the Nurture Research Center have found that altering the fatty acid profile of calf starters and growers altered the calf body weight gain from birth to at least 4 months of age. Soy oil which is high in linolenic acid and medium chain fatty acid and butyric acid actually increased the body weight gain and frame growth. Research with soy oil has been rare but the recent results have all been consistent with earlier research in calves fed milk replacer with and without added soy oil. Read more ...

Roxarsone withdrawn from Canadian market

Pfizer Animal Health Canada and Winnipeg veterinary drug distributors Dominion Veterinary Laboratories are to suspend sales of Roxarsone as sold in the products 3-Nitro-20 and Super Nitro-12, effective August 8. The American subsidiary of Pfizer's in the US are planning to take the same action where Roxarsone is concerned in response to request from the US food and drug administration (FDA). According to a notice from Health Canada's Veterinary Drugs Directorate, the FDA study had found inorganic arsenic, a known carcinogen, at higher levels in the livers of chickens treated with the Nitro drugs, compared with untreated chickens. Health Canada said it had reviewed the FDA study and agrees with its conclusion that the levels of inorganic arsenic involved were "very low" and posed no immediate health risk to people eating meat from birds treated with the drugs. Two key ethanol subsidies will end at the end of the month

The lawmakers in the US Senate have reached a deal that will end two key ethanol subsidies by the end of the month, this has come about sooner than expected. The deal is significant because the Minnesota and South Dakota lawmakers are ethanol supporters who have been trying to find a way to keep federal support for ethanol alive even while acknowledging that subsidies must be pared back. This is a major boost for Brazil as the Brazilian ethanol industry has struggled to gain large scale access to the US market. Grain traders have been expecting the subsidies to end last year, but some were surprised at the quick timetable. Read more ...

Landscape change leads to increased insecticide use in the US

With the loss of natural habitats and the continued growth of cropland which has increasingly simplified the agricultural landscapes in the US Midwest. "When you replace natural habitat with cropland, you tend to get more crop pest problems," says lead author Tim Meehan, University of Wisconsin-Madison associate scientist in the Department of Entomology. "Two things drive this pattern. As you remove natural habitats you remove habitat for beneficial predatory insects, and when you create more cropland you make a bigger target for pests giving them what they need to survive and multiply." At a hearing held on Tuesday Joe Jobe CEO of NBB said "the latest renewable fuel proposal will provide stability of the US Biodiesel industry well helping to create jobs, improve the environment and bolster US energy security". 9

Russian feed production in upward trend

Russia is one of the largest producers of animal feed in the world. For several year now Russia has maintained an upward trend in compound feed production. In 2010 production saw an increase of nine percent compared with 2009. Reports from the Federal State Statistics Service indicated that in May 2011 Russia produced 1,495,800 tons of compound animal feed, which was 10.2 percent more than in May 2010, and 1.2 percent more than in April 2011. Overall despite the general positive trend, ministers at a recent meeting again discussed the problems of the industry. Read more ...

Hungary destroys all GM maize fields

Recently in Hungary some 400 hectares of maize which was found to be grown with GM seeds, was destroyed. Lajos Bognar Hungary's deputy state secretary of the ministry of rural development said that the "genetically modified maize had been ploughed under and that pollen had not spread from the maize". Pioneer and Monsanto products have been found among the seeds planted by controllers. The free movement of goods within the European Union means that authorities will not investigate how the seeds arrived in Hungary but they will check where the goods can be found, Bognar said. Specialist manufacture Vi-COR has announced research results that demonstrate Celmanax is able to enhance livestock gut health. The experiments proved the ability of Celmanax Dry, Liquid and SCP to agglutinate forms of pathogenic E. coli and Salmonella species. Mannan Oligosaccharide (MOS) showed that it is important in preventing infections by some pathogenic bacteria by agglutinating them (causing them to clump together) and preventing them from binding to the host tissue. "Experiments conducted by our microbiologist and independent laboratories prove that adding Celmanax to livestock feed can improve gut health and reduce likelihood of infections," says Mark Holt, Vi-COR president and CEO. 'Save Our Antibiotics' Alliance Formed

An alliance between Compassion in World Farming, Sustain, and The Soil Association has been formed to help Save Our Antibiotics. The alliance recently welcomed a joint letter on the misuse of antimicrobial from the British Medical Association (BMA) and the British Veterinary Association (BVA). Joyce D'Silva of Compassion in World Farming said: "We welcome the letter from the BVA and BMA urging all vets and doctors to use these medicines critical to human and animal health more responsibly. Unfortunately in the UK, as in Europe and across the world, antibiotics are still being given to healthy animals as a cheap insurance policy against possible disease, often in the feed or drink of whole herds and flocks of livestock. Belarus cooperates in feed improvement program

A recent draft program was approved by the government of Belarus the program a Russian-Belarusian program aims to develop technologies and equipment for the production of biologically high grade animal feed (mixed feed). Part of the aim of this program is to reduce costs over all for animal feed, and also to reduce the amount of grain used in animal feeds by 20 percent. This will allow production of feeds to be increased with out increasing the cost of producing them. Read more ...

Last warning for California veal farm on antibiotic misuse

The US Food and Drug Administration has warned a Californian veal farm that unless they comply with federal law they will be closed down. The federal government claims that this farm has an extensive history of illegal quantities of antibiotics in its veal calf meat. The USDA has filed for a permanent injunction (known as a consent decree) against Virtue Calves in Galt California. The consent decree prevents the farmer from purchasing or selling any animals from their company for food use unless they take certain specific actions to assure that any animals with illegal drug residues in "edible tissue" do not enter the food supply. Corn imports by China seen doubling to cool fastest inflation since 2008

Its is estimated that China will buy five million metric tons of corn this year in an attempt to slow down the fastest inflation in three years. Monsanto and Sinochem talk to strengthen ties

Chinese state owned conglomerate Sinochem has been involved in talks with US based seed company Monsanto. The two companies have been talking for months to deepen their ties, people who are familiar the discussions said its an important sign of China's growing appetite for US crops and biotechnology. Monsanto dominates the crop biotechnology market, a market that they basically created 15 years ago. With the arrival of a new law on Food Safety and Hygiene in Vietnam, which become effective from July 1, imported foodstuffs have become backlogged. Under the new law goods of plant origin must be produced by a nation that meets Vietnam's requirements for food safety , also appropriate packaging and labelling in Vietnamese language stating certified mark. In the past there were 20 countries that imported products of plant origin to Vietnam regularly, but now the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development say that list has been reduced to five only and these five meet Vietnams requirements to be allowed to import. The certifications took about three years for the company to achieve from establishing and actualising the control system, undergoing an audit from relevant authorities and waiting for the certification to be authorised. FAO strengthen quality control systems in feed analysis laboratory's

The Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) Animal Production and Health Division (AGA) held an experts meeting at the FAO, Rome on May 30 to June 1, to finalise a draft document on Quality Control Systems for Animals Nutrition/Feed Analysis Laboratories, based on ISO 17025:2005. This new document is designed to help laboratory personal maintain high standards, well providing a prompt, efficient and professional service. The experts that attended were from the USA, Netherlands, Belgium, UK, New Zealand, Germany also a member of AGAS was in attendance. At the end of the meeting eight conclusions and eight recommendations were recorded. Some of the recommendations were a training workshop for laboratory manager and technical analyst. Cargill announced that it will supply palm oil products to its customers in Europe, United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. EU patent Office sides with DuPont

Dupont and Novozymes the worlds two largest enzymes makers, have been fighting it out over patents and recently Dupont come out as the winner in their European case. The European Patent Office (EPO) has revoked Novozymes patent which covers the technology used to coat an enzyme used for animal feed. Danisco claimed that the patent was invalid and that their product did not infringe. Soonhee Jang, Danisco’s chief intellectual property counsel, said. “We are gratified and very pleased with this decision.” Novozymes has appealed against the office’s decision and the patent will stand as granted until the EPO’s board decides on the challenge, said Annegrethe Jakobsen, a spokeswoman for the Bagsvaerd, Denmarkbased company. “We still have a strong confidence in the validity of the patent,” Jakobsen said. Grain crops used faster that farmers can produce

Grain crops are being used faster then the farmers can grow them according to Chris Hurt, a Purdue University agricultural economist. He goes on to say that there have been two major demand surges in the last five years, this includes the use of grain in ethanol production. But also the greater demand on grain crops, since the increase in wages in China this has lead to buying more food. "These greater levels of usage have placed a strain on the agricultural production system, resulting in low inventories that leave little room for any production shortfalls," Hurt says. "Producers certainly have responded to try to meet those demands, but what we've seen is that demand has really outpaced the ability of the world to supply." Read more ...

Scottish ABN mill destroyed by blaze

A fire at a major animal feed mill in Fife (Scotland) is being investigated to find out what caused it. Resident of the Town of Cupar were put on high alert, last Friday evening as the massive blaze took hold at the ABN mill. The Fire was brought under control by Saturday as firefighters continued to damp the areas of building and by Saturday afternoon the fire and rescue service crews had finished. Nobody was injured in the fire and all the staff who work at the mill have been account for. Resident were ask to remain indoors and keep their windows closed as there was still large smoke plumes. Investigators are looking into how the blaze started and how it spread so quickly, this investigation is likely to continue for some days. Read more ...

Coceral, Fediol and Fefac the European raw material and feed manufacturers united acknowledge entry into force of “technical solution” for minutes traces of GMOs not yet authorised in the European Union (EU) as a first step. More comprehensive action needed to avoid supply disruptions. It is thought that the technical solution will help reduce the risk of disruption in the feed supplies by boosting legal certainty for animal feed imports into the EU. Coceral, Fediol and Fefac are also calling for additional actions towards more options in order to prevent the imminent feed and food supply and trade issues. US$30 billion cut from agriculture

The President and the Lawmakers are looking to cut some US30 (€21.151 ) billion or more in agricultural spending as part of a deficit reduction deal. The farmers know it has to be done, but they fear too many cuts could cause a sharp decrease in crop prices, sending them back to the days of the 1980's farm crisis. Declining crops ratings likely to continue

The recent heat-wave in the Midwest has cause a decline in the corn and soybean crop ratings for the week ending July 17. The national crop ratings were down by three percent to take the rating to 66 percent. Like the corn crop, this year's national soybean rating is below the rating given to the crop the last two years as of mid-July.

Feed additive marks poultry meat contamination

Aberystwyth University scientist are developing a system to detect minuscule traces of fecal contamination on chicken carcasses in abattoirs. The Improved Food Safety initiative - a Collaborative Industrial Research Project undertaken by the University’s Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS). The additive, a soluble water based chlorophyll marker approved by the Food Standards Agency, would be fed to poultry during the last few days of finishing. Alltech builds Optigen production plant in New Mexico

Alltech the global animal health and nutrition company has started to build a new Optigen production plant in Mexico it is its 32nd production facility the company has built globally. The new site is the fifth of its kind to produce Alltech emerging technologies, Optigen a non-protein nitrogen source originally developed by Cornell University. The new plant is part of Alltech overall growth plan and reinforces its commitment to the southwest US animal feed industry, The construction should be completed by the end of July and full production will start soon after. Scientist at two agencies report on Antimicrobial resistance of zoonotic bacteria The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). Combined their expertise to study and analysis member states data on the antimicrobial resistance in zoonotic bacteria affecting humans, animals and food.

The two agencies worked together to compile the first joint report on this subject. The report shows that the resistance to antimicrobials was observed in zoonotic bacteria, such as Salmonella and Campylobacter, that can cause diseases transmissible between animals and humans and can also be found in foods. PetroAlgae a Melbourne (Florida, USA) a renewable energy company said that a third party study has showed that its micro crop meals performs as well as alfalfa in dairy cattle diets. Their micro crop technology uses indigenous aquatic micro organisms, a high-value protein co-product, and a new micro-crop meal for animal feed (which was the subject of the study), while absorbing carbon dioxide from greenhouse gas emissions. Severe stress in store for crops in US

Many of the crops growers in the US are facing a hard time as the heatwave continues Southern and eastern parts of the Midwest were again very hot yesterday with highs above 95 (and places like Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, St. Louis, and Kansas City reaching or exceeding the 100 degree mark) while it was in the 80s for highs in the western Corn Belt for areas north of Interstate 80. In Nebraska, Iowa and northwestern Illinois and southwestern Wisconsin all had rain and relief from the soaring heat all this rain and dry spells combined with heat-wave will cause severe stress to the crops. Ukrainian poultry poisoned by toxic feed

In the Donetsk region of the Ukraine about 25,000 turkeys died on a number of poultry farms. The preliminary examination showed that the turkeys had died to to toxic feed, specialists from the Ministry of Agriculture have found that the toxic feed has been used on several farms. "Feed can be affected by the toxic fungi; also containers of feed on the farm can be poorly cleaned etc. To prevent the accumulation of the toxins, the birds must be given an absorbent along with the feed. Therefore before drawing any conclusions it is necessary to check compliance with all necessary sanitary requirements on farms themselves," experts say. Read more ...

The reintroduction of animal protein in to feeds has been rejected by French farmers

French farmers are opposed to the reintroduction of animal protein in to animal feeds. The not so long ago BSE crises that affected farms resulting in millions of animal being slaughtered through out the European Union has had a lasting effect. A recent survey conducted in the middle of July, showed that 65.1 percent of farmers are opposed to the reintroduction of animal protein in to feeds for pigs or poultry, 26.5 percent were in favour. High dioxin content in copper sulphate

The new rapid alert system for feed and food indicated that feed grade copper sulphate from Romania had to high a content of dioxins. The warning is that companies that purchased feed grade copper sulphate in Romania or received it via another route like Belgium are advised to check if the copper sulphate is complying with EU rules for unwanted substances. 21

Saudi Arabia's King orders feed prices to be regulated

The king of Saudi Arabia Abdullah has ordered that the price of cattle feed be controlled with an increase in subsidy of 50 percent. This was done to avoid extreme price hikes on the cattle feed, he also ordered that related departments must keep an eye on the price of cattle feed markets. He also ordered that should any trader attempt to hike fodder prices, that they be handed the maximum punishment available. The punishment includes shuttering shops, defamation of the trader in three mass-circulation local newspapers at the expense of the violator, and depriving their right to government subsidy besides heavy fine. Influence of feed flavour on pre-weaning pig performance

Feed flavours are commonly used in in swine nursery diets to improve diet palatability and stimulate intake. Recent creep feed studies, using colour markers in the feed, have shown that only a certain proportion of piglets actually consume creep feed. These “eaters” as a result have better initial post weaning feed intake and growth performance than those in the litter that do not consume creep The lack of response to the feed flavour may be due to the limited time of creep feeding. In this study the researchers chose a period of three days to reflect the current practice of US pig producers to provide creep feed for two to seven days before weaning. For the last 20 years the Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica) has been found in many urban regions in the US. This is the first time one has been found near crops, Randy Pryor who visited a field in response to a grower found the Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica) adults feeding on the soybean plants. Output concerns triggers price increase

With the worry of declining crops levels and ratings that will lead to smaller than expected harvests. Traders are watching closely at the weather because farmers need favourable conditions to grow larger crops to replenish low inventories. The good-excellent rating for corn is down 10 percentage points from last year, but the USDA's yield estimate of 158.7 bushels an acre is up almost six bushels an acre from last year. Greenpeace gets a visit from the Police

After the recent attack on the GM crops by Greenpeace in Canberra, the police made a visit to their offices in Ultimo and locked the office down. Greenpeace claim that their motives for the destruction of the GM crops were concerns for health and environmental reasons. A police spokesman said they were in the process of executing a search warrant on Greenpeace's headquarters over and alleged trespass and property damage incident at CSIRO in Canberra. The crop that they damaged had no connection to Monsanto. CropLife, a body which represents the science plant industry, last week condemned Greenpeace's attack, saying it delayed valuable scientific research. Read more ...

Chinese court sentences the five involved in the clenbuterol problem

Five people from a feed premix company in Fujian province were sentenced by the Intermediate People's Court of Jiaozuo, in Henan province. All were found guilty and the sentences were wide ranging from a death sentence deferred for two years, a life sentence, 15 years , 14 years and a nine year sentence. They were found guilty of "endangering public security by using dangerous means". The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture banned the use of Phenylethanolamine A, in feed or animal drinking water at the end of last year. It also announced in April that it will cooperate with eight ministries and commissions to launch a one-year crackdown on toxic additives. Read more ...

Nestle new plant in Western Hungary begins production

The Swiss based food giants Nestle, began trail production at the new plant in Western Hungary the company's second HUF 10 billion (€37.3m). Nestle plans to hire 250 people to work the 10,000 square meter plant in the village of Bük. The plant, which will serve as the regional production base for Nestlé's United States-based pet-food division Nestlé Purina PetCare, will export most of its production to other countries in the Central and East European region. Brazilian farmers are intending to grow more corn and soybean this year, a survey recently conducted showed that the 2011/12 soybean planting at 68.88 million acres was up from last year by 1.8 percent. Corn would also increase in acreage by as much as 20 percent, with the domestic prices of corn up 90 percent higher than last years crop. During the last three years farmers moved away from corn due to the low prices it was fetching, but now the prices have risen the farmer return to the crop, in Parana farmers will plant 2.23 million acres to corn that an increase from last years 1.86 million acres. Environmental challenges tackled by animal nutrition experts

Experts and scientist from around the world met at the University of New England this week for the University’s biennial Recent Advances in Animal Nutrition Australia conference. Coming from about a dozen countries, including Egypt, Iran, Philippines, and Malaysia, India, China, Fiji, the Netherlands, Singapore and the US, to discuss ways of improving the nutritional efficiency of animal production while reducing its impact on the environment. “In the past, feed conversion efficiency has been pursued mainly because of the related cost benefits,” Organising committee chair Dr Cronjé said. “Now, however, the emphasis is shifting to its environmental benefits in reducing emissions and effluent. Kazakhstan gets new feed ensiling technology

Kazakhstan for a long time has held back on the development of agriculture due to the lack of stable feed. However this problem maybe soon solved due to a new technology for feed ensiling which will preserve the fodder better and gives the animal higher quality feed. The scientist in Kazakhstan created a special bacteria starter "Kazbiosil" for three types of silage: hard to ensile plants (legumes), easy to ensile plants (corn, sunflower) and almost non ensilagable plants. Thermostable keratinase improves feather meal

A North Carolina agricultural biotechnology company BioResource International has presented its latest results on improving the value of feather meal at the 2011 meeting of the Poultry Science Association, held July 16-19 in Saint Louis, Missouri. The company’s enzyme technology improves the utilisation of protein in animal feed, which in turn decreases the amount of corn and soy necessary to grow poultry to market size. “We attend this meeting every year to present our latest developments and to learn about trends in the future of animal agriculture," said Giles Shih, BRI chairnman and CEO. “We also use this meeting to find opportunities for further advancement. Australian organic Farmer sue neighbours over GM crops

After the agriculture authority stripped him of his organic status, an organic farmer in Australia has started legal action against his neighbour because he claims that GM cranola was blown onto his farm from his neighbour. This is believed to be the first case of it kind in Australia concerning GM crops and organic farmers. Steve Marsh lawsuit against Micheal Baxter is demanding compensation over the loss of his status which was lucrative and had taken him 10 years to build up his organic food business and this was devastated by the loss of his certificate, with about 70 percent of his land now unusable for organic farming. Hungary imposes further controls on GMO cropping

Hungary has imposed more controls over GMO crops, planting and distribution of genetically modified (GMO) seeds could receive a fine of up to HUF 2 Billion (€7.5 million).
