01/07/2013: Firefighters to train for silo rescue; Innovad launches new website; population drives crop demand

Often compared to sinking in quicksand, a farmer can find all sorts of danger in a container filled with corn or soybeans. Within 22 seconds of stepping into a grain silo, a person can become immersed. In light of this, Bloomington city, USA firefighters have received a set of metal panels that encircle a victim of an entrapment. The person is harnessed to the rescue equipment while rescuers dig at the material surrounding them. Read more...

U.S Wheat Associates installs new officers

The U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) board of directors installed new officers at its annual meeting July 1, 2013, in Rapid City. Dan Hughes (Venango, NE) was installed as chairman, while last year’s chairman Darrell Davis (Ipswich, SD) transitioned to past chairman and chairman of the USW Budget Committee. Other officers installed included Roy Motter (Brawley, CA) as vice chairman and Brian O’Toole (Crystal, ND) as Secretary-Treasurer. USW officers were elected to these one-year positions at the January 2013 Winter Wheat Conference. 3

Official business was called to order on Sunday, June 30, and continued through Monday, July 1. Reports from the meeting included a welcome from South Dakota Secretary of Agriculture Lucas Lentsch, an update export market development activities in South Korea from USW Country Director Dr. Won Bang Koh, a report from NAWG President Bing Von Bergen, a market update from USW Market Analyst Casey Chumrau and reports from wheat producers who participated in an intensive industry tour to Asia. 02/07/13: Strike at Australian grain handling cooperative; Egyptian wheat imports; India's seed saviour

Workers walked out of CBH's Kwinana operation, Australia over a pay dispute, marking the first stike at the cooperative since the 1990s. Grain handlers are unhappy over a proposed 13 percent pay rise over the next three years. They claim this will mean Kwinana employees would be paid less than workers in other regions are are pushing for a 15 percent increase. However, bosses at the have told workers that the boom in Australian grain exports is over and workers need to realise economic times have changed since the last agreement was negotiated. After two years of political and economic upheaval, the world's top wheat importer is looking for overseas help to maintain its imports which support a subsidised bread programme. France is still considering Egypt's request for help with grain imports and storage, the trade ministry said, but Market operators are sceptical about major French aid and the country is still considering the situation. Debal Deb is building a seed bank in India's Odisha state which has helped to preserve 920 varieties of indigenous rice using traditional methods. Royal DSM, the global Life Sciences and Materials Sciences company, announces today that it has acquired Unitech Industries Limited (Unitech), a New Zealand based producer of nutritional products for both human and animal markets. Financial details are not disclosed at this time. The acquisition, which fully meets DSM’s financial and strategic requirements, has closed. With the acquisition of Unitech, DSM has production facilities in over 40 countries in its Nutrition business.

Knowing the Km value of commercial phytase enzymes could be the key to enabling pig and poultry producers to make much more effective buying decisions, claims Dr Mike Bedford, research director, AB Vista.

“Without access to Km values, end users simply cannot differentiate between a phytase capable only of standard phosphorous release levels at 50-60 percent phytate destruction, and one capable of delivering the full benefits of phytate destruction and superdosing,” Dr Bedford adds. 03/07/13: Truck strike delays Brazilian grain; Russian grain harvest underway; Silos Cordoba is a top exporter in Andalucia

Grain deliveries at Brazil's largest port in Santos have been delayed due to a strike by truck workers. Reuters reports that two thirds of of grains are delivered to Santos by trucks. The trucker's union MUBC, is demanding a subsidy for diesel fuel, exemptions on highway toll payments for drivers and the creation of a new federal government department of cargo transportation. Despite fewer deliveries, shipments have continued because exporting firms hold grains in private storage units to minimize the effect of interruptions in ground transport More information...

Increasing demand for up to 85 percent phytate breakdown – to release additional phosphorus for lower feed costs or to eliminate phytate antinutrient effects through superdosing – requires phytases with ever lower Km values, such as the current third generation E. coli-derived product, Quantum Blue. High Km phytases simply cease to act before phytate concentrations get this low.

“Km is the concentration of phytate required for the enzyme to operate at 50 percent of its maximum capacity,” he explains. “So a lower Km phytase will act sooner when phytate becomes available in the stomach following a meal, and act for longer as phytate is broken down and concentrations begin to drop.”

Russia sped up its grain harvest to avoid losses from wet weather in the southern areas. Farmers reaped 8.5 million metric tons of cereals by the start of July, the Moscow-based Agriculture Ministry said on its website, up from 4.9 million tons a year earlier. They gathered 6.8 million tons of wheat, against 4.3 million tons last year, from 7.6 percent of the planted area. More information... Construction has started on a new grain storage facility in the Kamensky District, Russia. When completed it will be the largest grain storage facility in the Penza region. Producers who did not receive payment for grain sold to Bissma Pacific Inc. have received full compensation for their eligible claims through the Canadian Grain Commission's Payment Protection Program. Bissma Pacific Inc. was a licensed grain dealer located in Pickering, Ontario, until November 21, 2012. Minimising risk To minimise the risk of not getting paid in full for their deliveries, producers are encouraged to: Deal with companies licensed by the Canadian Grain Commission Ensure they are in receipt of an authorised document (i.e. receipt, cash purchase ticket or cheque) upon delivery to a company licensed by the Canadian Grain Commission Cash any cash purchase tickets or cheques right away Immediately report any payment issues to the Canadian Grain Commission Rules for compensation Producers must follow and meet certain rules to qualify for compensation under the Payment Protection Program. Deliveries made to unlicensed companies are not covered by Payment Protection Program. The Canadian Grain Commission licenses primary, process, terminal and transfer elevators and grain dealers, but does not license companies such as feed lots. Producers are only covered by a licensed company's security for 90 days after the date they delivered their grain or 30 days after the date they received a cash purchase ticket or other bill of exchange. The shorter of the two time periods applies. While producers are not guaranteed 100% compensation, in the case of Bissma Pacific Inc., eligible producers received 100% compensation for the amount they were owed.

Paul McKenzie, farm management consultant, has launched iCropAustralia with the aim of sparking debate on the value for money that growers receive from levies. The Monsanto Co., has said the biotech crop was used in two feeding trials in the U.S. and one overseas. Premier Tech Chronos supplies retrofit bag former to Kerry Agribusiness

Nottingham based Premier Tech Chronos has recently completed a retrofit installation for the Kerry Agribusiness Feed Mill in Farranfore, Co. Kerry, Ireland. The retrofit project replaces a bag forming until that was originally supplied more than 20 years ago. Kerry Agribusiness provides a range of products and services that are aimed at optimising profitability at a farm level. From their Farranfore Feed Mill, Kerry Agribusiness has been supplying top quality animal feeds across the Munster region. As part of the retrofit project, Premier Tech Chronos service engineers supported the Kerry Agribusiness engineers who re-installed and recommissioned the SSV Bag Former. 09/07/2013: Pop sorghum; Humberside's biofuel plant; native lost greens and grains The idea of popping sorghum, and in doing so improving the digestibility of starch, is being trialled in Queensland, Australia.

Feeding trials started in late June. Due to the light and airy nature of pop sorghum, it is being ground down before it is fed to the cattle. "At the moment we are just testing the concept but, if we achieve a significant production response, further development into a machine that can allow the sorghum to be popped on-farm will be conducted," said Amy Anstis, principal investigator for the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. International Association of Operatives Millers Mideast & Africa District (IAOM MEA) was formed in 1989 and represents flour and feed millers across the Middle East and Africa. Initially, the district was managed by rotating host countries, meaning the head office changed from one country to another. Since 2006, however, there has been a permanent head office in Muscat, Oman. This has helped to standardise operations and allow the association to offer more services to both members and the region.

GFMT's Alice Neal spoke to Ali Habaj, secretary general and treasurer, IAOM MEA, about the association and milling in the Middle East and Africa. Habaj is a well suited for a role within IAOM. He has 14 years experience in the milling industry and is the full time CEO of the Atyab Investments Group which manages many firms in the food industries. The portfolio includes Oman Flour Mills, one of the biggest bakeries in the Middle East, Sohor Poultry and a modern poultry farm. Habaj’s current projects include setting up a new pasta factory and a new flour mill in Oman. What makes IOAM MEA unique? IAOM MEA has 800 consistent members, making it one of the biggest districts in terms of members. We have quite a diverse group of food and feed industries becoming part of the organisation. The IAOM MEA conference and expo is different from IAOM meetings in the USA. The USA focuses on technical and operational issues. But at the IAOM MEA expo, the focus is on grain trading and markets. The three-day programme will have two main themes: a technical focus including operations, innovations and management and marketing.

Who will be at the IAOM MEA conference and expo? We have different kinds of delegates depending on the region targeted. This year the conference and expo will be held in Tunisia to attract the northern African region. We will also have some South African and central African attendees. Having a different location helps attract new millers from different regions. The expo caters more for senior manager and owners. So the attendees are decision makers mostly. This profile makes IAOM MEA quite different from other IAOM expos. We try to have a 50/50 split between buyers and suppliers. There is also now a section in the expo for feed which has been developed with VICTAM. Authors Paul Roberts (The End of Oil and The End of Food) and Mike Walsh (who writes on future food trends) will be speaking at the IAOM conference in Tunisia. How has the milling industry developed since IAOM MEA was founded in 1989? IAOM MEA has had a major impact on milling. The expo is the only place where people can meet every year. It provides a place to get to know the traders, understand the problems in milling and learn which machines to use. We are ready to go beyond the annual conference by providing continuous education throughout the year and are considering running IAOM courses in local languages. What are the biggest challenges for your members? It is the largest region in terms of food imports so food security is a big issue for flour millers. There are a lot of countries, each at different levels, trying to achieve food security. In Africa, access to land to ensure a continuous food supply is an issue.

There are many different solutions and multinationals are involved as well as local companies. Increasing the storage capacity for grains is also a challenge but countries are working on this issue. In recent years, Kuwait and Oman have both added an additional 300,000 tonnes of storage and Qatar is improving its grain storage capacity too. What have been the biggest successes in the region? In the last five years there has been a move in the kind of finished products. There is a lot more food processing for example poultry, pasta and goods for bakeries. This trend is going to east Africa. In the feed and flour mills we see a strong focus on food processing and companies that can help finance these projects. Flour milling is well established throughout the region. It is mostly filling the markets. There are some exports but it is only really Somalia, with its political problems, which needs to import flour. Imports are more on the specialised side for example, a blend with different types of flours or quality of grain. Where do products milled in MEA go? In Africa and the Gulf flour is mainly consumed domestically. In Turkey, government incentives have given Turkish flour a competitive edge. The country exports its flour to Africa, Cambodia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Indonesia. One of the reasons why Turkish flour is popular in these countries is because of the low protein content which makes the flour suitable for noodles. What predictions do you have for the milling industry over the next 10 years? In the flour market there are three major factors: eating habits, baking and the market. Eating habits and expectation are changing; people are more into carbohydrates. Bakeries are demanding higher quality and different kind of flours for different breads and pastries. Coffee shops, hotels and airlines are expanding, requiring different flour mixtures. Mills need to cater for different customers and respond to market demand. Thirty years ago the region produced two flours (brown and white). Today there are 25 kinds of flours. For the feed industry, there needs to be support for farmers to increase the number of farms. More farmers equals more milling east Africa. Food security is also affecting feed mills but it needs to be organised. Proper farms (particularly poultry farms) need the feed milling industries standing by them. Grain storge is a vital, yet often overlooked, part of the food and feed supply chain.Â Tropical climates that allow for year-round farming would seem to be a tremendous economic advantage, but for corn and soybean farmers in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso it also poses a problem - an abundance of grain followed by about a 10 percent post harvest loss, partially due to a lack of storage.Â

"There is a 34 percent undercapacity of soybean storage, and the situation is aggravated by the rapidly increasing production of second-crop maize," said University of Illinois agricultural economist Peter Goldsmith. "The worst situation occurs in northern Mato Grosso with a simulation of a full-maize second crop. The potential to succession crop is great and current levels of storage are low. There is clear evidence of a shortage of storage, particularly private and cooperative, as grain production rises in the state," he said. Goldsmith conducted the research project, which was the first to employ Geographic Information System (GIS) software to map the coordinates of commercial, cooperative and private grain storage facilities in Mato Grosso. South African team surveys HRW crop in Kansas

A South African trade team is visiting Kansas this week to obtain a firsthand glimpse of the 2013 hard red winter (HRW) crop. The team arrived in Kansas on July 6, 2013 and has spent the week visiting with wheat farmers, researchers, inspectors, traders and baking experts. Premier Foods, the United Kingdom's largest food manufacturer and producer of Hovis bread and Mr Kipling cakes, has revealed plans to shut a 109-year-old flour mill with the loss of 43 jobs. Premier announced their Hovis Rank at Barry Docks, South Wales, is set to close by the end of October this year. The mill was built in 1904 by the Hovis-Bread Flour Company – Britain’s largest flour miller, which has since been renamed Rank Hovis. The Premier business, which is struggling under a near UK£1 billion debt hopes to save around UK£20 million this year through the bread business restructure and general cost cutting. Read more... Adisseo publishes an updated version of the amino acids requirements for poultry, pigs and aqua The new Rhodimet® Nutrition Guide edited by Adisseo regroups the amino acids requirements for - poultry: broilers, pullets, laying hens, turkeys and ducks, - swine: piglets, growing-finishing pigs, gilts, gestating and lactating sows, entire males, - aquaculture: freshwater fish, marine fish and shrimps. The recommendations are expressed in digestible amino acids, and when not available on total amino acids. To achieve this new guide, Adisseo’s Experts have realised an extensive review of literature for the last twenty years (more than 200 articles for poultry and swine) and included most recent discussions from the Advancia forums. A meta analysis has been lead on experiments designed with at least four amino acid levels. Based on a model approach developed by Pierre Andre Geraert, innovation marketing director, Adisseo, amino acids requirements are calculated according to weight gain of growing animals or egg mass of layers. The digestible amino acid requirements are then expressed in gram of amino acid intake per animal and per day, knowing that these requirements increase linearly with the average daily gain or egg mass. This methodology is also used, when enough data are available for essential amino acids: methionine, threonine, tryptophan, arginine, isoleucine and valine for broilers, laying hens, turkeys and pigs requirements. The recommendations for non essential amino acids (cystine, alanine, praline, tyrosine, etc …), are calculated according to an ideal protein profile, with lysine as the reference. Very recent trials achieved by the BARC Institute in Thailand show that Adisseo’s new recommendations lead to better economical results than the other sources available. HGCA announces £250k investment to add value to arable products

The University of Reading, Berkshire, UK and Rothamsted Research, Hertfordshire, UK, have been awarded UK£235,000 to develop a process for the production of ferulic acid from wheat bran. Dr. Dimitris Charalampopoulos, who will be leading the research said, "Plant materials are rich in ferulic acid which can be converted into vanillin. This can be used to add flavour to a variety of products or as an active agent in a range of personal care formulations, such as sun creams and anti-ageing skin care products." Currently, ferulic acid is mainly produced commercially from the residues generated during the production of rice bran oil. However, wheat bran has great potential as a UK source because it contains relatively high concentrations of the acid. It is estimated that around one million tonnes of wheat bran is produced annually in the UK and that this could equate to a potential ferulic acid production of up to 5,000 tonnes. The proposed research will generate the technical know-how for the development of a scalable, cost-effective and efficient process for ferulic acid production. A further UK£15,000 has been awarded to NNFCC to conduct a 3-month techno-economic feasibility study to investigate the potential for a Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) plant in the UK. PLA has gained a foothold in the global plastics supply chain in recent years and is used in many applications from compostable packaging to durable automotive plastics. The global biopolymer market is growing substantially, with anticipated growth of 13 percent by 2020 in the EU alone. In 2012, the added value bio-based productivity in the UK was worth about £4.1 billion.

Shedding new light on specific weight

New analysis of HGCA data has shown late ripening wheat varieties tend to have lower specific weights but higher yields. The research, prompted by the quality of last year’s harvest, looked at data from 1994 to 2012 from Recommended List trials and the AHDB/ HGCA Cereal Quality Survey. It examined the effect of weather, varietal traits and region on final specific weight. “One of the most interesting findings is that later ripening varieties tend to have lower specific weights but higher yields,” according to Dr Ellie Marshall, research and knowledge transfer manager at HGCA. “Crucially, the difference between the specific weight achieved in Recommended List trials and commercial crops is much greater in later ripening varieties.” In recent years, there has been a shift to more late ripening varieties and this has been matched by more being grown on-farm. The main reason for the shift is that these varieties tend to have higher yields which is one of the main factors growers look for in their crops. “The research shows that the specific weight problems of 2012 are likely to have been exacerbated by late maturity but we can’t forget that the weather was the most important factor. Growers should consider having a range of maturities in order to achieve both consistent yields and quality in each season,” explains Dr Marshall. 2012 was undoubtedly an exceptional year. From 2007 to 2011, the specific weights of Recommended List trial samples closely mirrored those in AHDB/HGCA Cereal Quality Survey of commercial samples. In 2012, the average specific weight for Recommended List samples fell just short of 72kg/hl, while crops in the Cereal Quality Survey were even further behind at 69 kg/hl. This is attributed to the far more robust fungicide programme used for the Recommended List in comparison to many commercial farms. However, even with robust treatments, specific weight was still considerably lower in 2012 indicating that the weather played a key role. “April 2012 was wet and gloomy which slowed plant development and reduced grain number. These conditions returned during the growth and grain filling months of June and July which saw higher than average rainfall coupled with low light levels, particularly in June. These combined to produce lower specific weights and a delayed harvest in many parts of the country,” according to Dr. Marshall. The research also looked at regional differences in the specific weights of commercial crops. The most striking finding was that in 2012, the South West and Midlands had the lowest specific weights of about 68 kg/ hl, whereas in previous seasons, specific weights in these regions were among the highest in the UK.

Average specific weights in other parts of the UK were very similar to one another at around 70k g/hl, this was even the case in Scotland which typically has lower specific weights. The research has not yet shown whether variety choice, weather or other factors were the main cause of these regional variations. For the longer-term, HGCA has set up a network of weather stations to help researchers look in greater detail at how weather influences crop development. More information on regional and varietal differences will also come out of HGCA’s Cropping Systems Platform project which will have four UK sites for the 2013/2014 growing season.

22/07/2013: FDA permits Salmonella in animal feed; grain truckers cause crisis; school meal scheme ends in tragedy

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has formally revoked a 1967 policy that prohibited the sale of feed contaminated with Salmonella. As a result of this policy change the agency will allow feed known to be contaminated with Salmonella to be fed to pigs, chickens and cattle. Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT) has announced its disappointment at the elimination of a public safeguard.

The National Food Security Ordinance aims to give 5 kg (11 lb) of cheap grain every month to 800 million people and more than doubles the reach of the existing subsidised food system. “A rule proposed by CFTC would radically change the way business is done in the futures industry, and we believe strongly – despite CFTC’s goal of enhancing customer protection – that two provisions of the rule actually would dramatically increase customers’ risk,” testified John Heck, senior vice president of The Scoular Company in Omaha, Nebraska. Heck serves as chairman of NGFA’s finance and administration committee, co-chairs the association’s customer protectiontTask force, and serves on the NGFA’s board of directors and executive committee. The first provision of the proposed rule cited by Heck would decrease the time in which customers’ margin calls must arrive to their futures commission merchant (FCM) from the current three days to just one day. If it didn’t, the FCM would have to take a capital charge for that “undermargined” amount. The NGFA is “urging the CFTC to maintain the current three-day timeline,” Heck said. “Otherwise, we fear FCMs would require their customers to pre-margin their hedge accounts. That would result in customers being required to send more money to their FCM, potentially putting a greater amount of segregated customer funds at risk in the event of another FCM insolvency.” The second provision of CFTC’s proposal objectionable to the NGFA would change the timing of FCMs’ calculation of “residual interest,” which are the funds the FCM contributes from its own money to “top up” customer accounts until margin calls are received. For decades, this provision of the Commodity Exchange Act has been interpreted by the agency as allowing a period of time for FCMs to do so. But the CFTC’s proposal seeks to change that consistent historical interpretation to require that every customer be fully margined on a continual, 24/7 basis. “Contrary to the commission’s intent, this proposal actually exposes futures customers to much more risk,” said Heck. He provided the committee with an example of a typical country elevator whose financial exposure under the proposal would nearly double if another FCM insolvency occurs. In addition to comments on the CFTC rule, the NGFA also stated it believes the “U.S. bankruptcy code needs to be harmonised with the Commodity Exchange Act and CFTC regulations to clarify and ensure that customers come first in FCM insolvencies.”

A food allergy is typically an immune system response to a protein present in food that the body mistakenly believes is harmful. Common food allergens are gluten containing cereals, crustaceans, eggs, fish, peanuts, soybeans, lupines, nuts, milk, mustard, sesame, celery, and molluscs. Food allergies affect 1-3% of the whole population and 5-8% of children. Even minor exposure to a food allergen in the milligram range can cause symptoms from mild skin rashes to a fatal anaphylactic shock. Cross contamination during the production process occurs often, so that residues of food allergens from different products may be present. An extremely important part of allergen management and control practices is the documentation of every aspect of the food manufacturing process, but documentation cannot be relied upon alone without audits, inspections and testing to demonstrate that the control systems are working. Any agreed specifications require validation and this has to include manufacturing, cleaning and analytical testing. Analyzing a final food product in a quality control lab or governmental lab is using quantitative methods like ELISAs.

Industry experts report that China's grain imports will rise this year as the population continues to gain access to higher-protein food and industrial use of grain crops expands. Ding Shengjun, senior researcher at the Academy of the State Administration of Grain, said "Industrial consumption now far exceeds food demand. Farms in the South West of Australia, have been videoing badgers raiding food stores as part of research to help prevent the spread of bovine TB to cattle. Ian Vernon, from the AHVLA Wildlife Team running the Farm Assessment Toolkit project, said, "In some cases farmers have had no idea badgers are entering their buildings. On one of the farms from last year's surveillance the cameras picked up images of badgers frequently visiting the feed store by squeezing under the gate. The North American Millers’ Association (NAMA) recently hosted ten summer interns from member companies for a Washington public policy experience. Cargill/Horizon Milling interns, Amie Canarr and Ryan Welker; ConAgra Mills interns, Sabrina Reynolds, Jessica Solo and Luke Weinheimer; Bunge Milling interns, Tyler Watson, Jacob Porter, Paul Catterson, and Kenton Robert; and Wilkins Rogers Mills intern Travis Grover met with the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry and with the House of Representatives Agriculture Committee. They learned how the Farm Bill can affect the future of milling. Canaar is enrolled in the engineering program at the University of North Dakota, Watson is enrolled in the mechanical engineering program at California State University, and Solo is enrolled in the food science programme at Kansas State University.

30/07/2013: Ukraine's record grain harvest; Blumberg Grain to invest US$250m in agric sector; animal feed company goes organic

According to a note to investors by Kyiv-based investment bank Dragon Capital, Ukrainian farmers have harvested nearly 27 million tons of grain this year, representing a 21 percent year-on-year increase on 9 million hectares of land. Dragon Capital reported that the volume included 19.6 million tons of wheat, 6.2 million tons of barley and 2.1 million tons of rapeseed. The Agriculture Ministry forecasts that 57-59 million tons of grain will be harvested this year, up 22-26 percent over last year. Read more... India's grain production may soon hit record figures thanks to monsoonsown grain. Rice and corn planting figures have increased as a result of one of the best starts to the rainy season since 1994. A high that could potentially ease inflation in Asia’s third-largest economy. The production of crops from corn to rice and barley may exceed the all-time high of 131.3 million metric tons in the 2011-2012 season and last year’s 128.2 million tons, Tariq Anwar, junior agriculture minister, told reporters in New Delhi. It is expected that farmers will donate up to three thousand tonnes of grain, which will be processed into breakfast cereal; pasta; flour and bread. "When growers deliver grain to the receival site, they are able to donate one or two tonnes or what ever it may be to the Foodbank.
