Cargill to invest in Holdrege elevator

Cargill will invest about $30 million to increase unloading speeds, storage and shipping capacity, as well as add railroad service at its grain elevator southwest of Holdrege. “South Central Nebraska is a highly productive area for grains” said Phil Harders, leader of Cargill AgHorizons U.S. s Cornhusker Farm Service Group (FSG). “In addition to the local markets we have been serving by truck, the added rail service will expand the markets for farmer customers to the Pacific Northwest and the U.S. Southwest.” The capital investment project at Holdrege is expected to be complete by the harvest of 2014. To date, Holdrege has shipped grain out by truck. The project will add rail service along the BNSF Railroad, which will allow Cargill to load 120-car shuttle trains. “Unit trains are an efficient way to move large volumes of grain,” said Tim Coppage, Cornhusker FSG merchandising leader. “By giving us access to additional markets like the Pacific Northwest and the U.S. Southwest, we can better meet the demands of our farmer customers for broader markets.” The project will increase storage capacity by 3.5 million bushels, which will bring the total to 5 million. Cargill will add three truck receiving pits with a combined 80,000 bushel per hour truck receiving capacity. The facility will also have 70,000 bushel per hour rail shipping capacity. “The high capacity receiving pits and grain legs will provide a better fit to the increased harvest speed of area producers,” said John Barrett, Cornhusker FSG operations leader. The facility will be increasing its staff from seven full time grain employees to 10 or more over the coming year. Contractors will have approximately 100 employees at the site in different stages of construction. Area officials welcomed the news.

03/06/2013: Mitsubishi to take control of Brazil’s grain supplies; sorghum pancakes; grain rescue tubes

Mitsubishi Corp. will take control of grain supplier Los Grobo Ceagro do Brazil S.A. as Japan’s biggest trading company seeks to boost corn and soybean supplies to meet Asian demand. A Brazilian unit of Mitsubishi will purchase 60 percent of Goiania-based Ceagro to raise the Japanese company’s stake to 80 percent. The Japanese company will spend 50 billion yen ($497 million) to raise its stake in Ceagro. Read more... The South Jacksonville Fire Department recently acquired a grain rescue tube as part of preparations to meet the extra safety needs of the soonto-open Bartlett Grain Co. terminal. But the equipment, which forms a lifesaving wall around a person trapped in a grain elevator, was first put to the test last month following an emergency call to a rural Woodson farm field. New demand and capacity planning product released by Preactor

The Preactor Group has today announced the release of its latest solution for scheduling and a new demand and capacity planning module – Preactor 400 GMPS. The firm, which creates the Preactor range of production planning and scheduling software products for industries including manufacturing, logistics and services, said that Preactor 400 GMPS (Graphical Master Production Schedule) is an essential new tool. It will help companies who want to enhance competitiveness, increase profits and improve customer service. The problems which frequently challenge the management of FMCG companies (fast-moving consumer goods) include unnecessarily high stock levels of both finished products and raw materials, as well as the possibility of this stock reaching its sell-by date before being consumed. Preactor 400 GMPS has been created to reduce this production problem by allowing effective purchasing of economical quantities of raw materials, plus their timely use.

“It complements our detailed scheduling software, and works both in a make-to-stock and a make-to-order environment, either as a standalone product or linked to ERP (enterprise resource planning) systems,” Mike Novels, CEO of the Preactor Group said. Preactor 400 GMPS has already been subjected to a year-long trial by many well-known companies in Europe and North America, including Mars and Premier Foods. This has allowed suggested improvements to be built into the product before it is now launched universally. For make-to-stock businesses, Preactor 400 GMPS uses current and expected future demands, as well as starting stock quantities and stock control rules, to decide how much of each product to make. The resulting required manufacturing quantities are then overlaid onto the real capacity of resources to produce a ‘capacity constrained plan’. This can then be input to the business’s ERP system, if one is in use. Alternatively, for make-to-order businesses, Preactor 400 GMPS isn’t used to calculate manufacturing quantities. Instead, the user’s material requirements planning (MRP) process will calculate these, so Preactor 400 GMPS is used in parallel with this process. The software can be used to review manufacturing capacity against proposed changes in demand. For example, it can enable businesses to decide whether their current capacity is adequate, and if not the appropriate stage at which to increase capacity.

High altitude testing for packaged dry goods

Versaperm is launching a new version of its HASS (High Altitude Shipping Simulator) into the UK and European marketplaces; it fully complies with all relevant European standards and is now CE marked.

The system then takes the packaged product through each cycle in sequence, before eventually reducing the pressure back to "ground level". The unit's control system supports testing on up to 200 altitude profiles without reprogramming, each with its own set of configured set points.

The new HASS controller monitors and controls both the vacuum level and rate of change of the vacuum during simulating precise flight conditions.

The HASS simulates shipping boxes of dry packaged goods, such as cereals, at high altitudes. It gives the controller very flexible options including the simulated height, the number of high peaks the goods need to fly over, the ramp speed (or rate), and time at the peak. Results can be fed into a QC system to produce statistical results which allow the manufacturer to spot the first signs of any trends or problems and thus take preventative measures.

The LEAF Marque is a global environmental assurance system recognising sustainably farmed products. It is based on LEAF’s Integrated Farm Management (IFM) principles and all LEAF Marque farms are independently inspected. There are 487 LEAF Marque farmers in the UK and 580 in another 36 countries. LEAF Marque farmers already supply Waitrose with all of its UK sourced fruit and vegetables and Leckford Estate – the Waitrose Farm – is a LEAF Marque certified farm. Adopting the LEAF Marque standard for its commodity crops means that Waitrose will strengthen its control frameworks for ingredients such as wheat and oilseed rape. On the occasion of its XXVI Congress in Cracow, the FEFAC General Assembly welcomed the applications for active membership of the Croatian Feed Industry Association (Grupacila Industrije Stocne Hrane – CFIA) and the Bulgarian compound feed manufacturers association (Bulgarian Feed Manufacturers Association – BFMA). The active membership was officialised in the margin of the FEFAC Congress by an agreement between FEFAC and its two new active members signed by Mr Stjepan Sabljak, President, for CFIA and Mrs Hristineta Stancheva, President, for BFMA. It will enter into force on 1 July 2013. CFIA has been observer member of FEFAC since 2008, as is any association representing feed companies based in EU candidate countries. The official integration of Croatia in the EU-28 paved the way to full membership of CFIA. In 2012, CFIA counted 124 members for a total compound feed production of 640,000 t. As regards BFMA, their membership to FEFAC is the natural outcome of the development of the national association since the adhesion of Bulgaria to the EU. BFMA represents a compound feed production of 900,000 t for 66 members. With these two new members, FEFAC will count as from 1 July 2013 24 Associations from 23 EU Member States.

FEFAC Council calling for flexible CAP reform incentives for a more market–resilient, innovative and resource-efficient EU livestock and feed industry During the XXVI FEFAC Congress held in Cracow, FEFAC’s Council members recalled the need for the new CAP to create a political framework that could stimulate investments in the EU livestock chain. Tight market conditions with consumption exceeding production are one of the main drivers for the price volatility of agricultural commodities. This causes financial risk being off-loaded on the livestock chain which results in new barriers for investments. Newly elected FEFAC president Ruud Tijssens highlighted that “the main role of the new CAP reform package is to unlock the EU agriculture productivity growth through innovation and modernisation and to provide operators with reliable market and crisis management tools to increase their market-resilience in the face of higher market volatility”. Well-functioning hedging tools are another key element to help feed companies to deal with price volatility. In the framework of the revision of the Market in Financial Instruments Directive (MIFID), the FEFAC Council members welcomed the proposals to set up position limits and to report weekly on position taken by categories of operators. These measures will reduce the risk of market abuse and improve the transparency of trade. FEFAC also called for the development of new futures markets for EU vegetable protein and animal products. While farmers take benefits from the cost buffering provided by feed companies who take on the financial risk linked to highly volatile markets for feed materials, they do not have the possibility to arbitrate the risk on livestock products.

To meet the growing global demand, the EU feed industry will also need to further increase its resource efficiency, using research and innovation as essential tools. The need to develop pre-competitive research projects aiming at developing innovative technological solutions is shared by EU feed industry’s Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda on Animal Nutrition. The DGAGRI European Innovation Partnership should facilitate knowledge transfer from animal Nutrition projects to practical solutions for farmers assisting them to further improve Feed Conversion Rates and livestock performance. The FEFAC Council finally stressed the need to couple the above recommendations with the reduction of the impact of feed and livestock products on the environment. Together with the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA), FEFAC is actively engaged in the development of the Feed Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) Guide in accordance with the principles defined by FAO and the European Commission’s Product Environmental Footprint Guide just published in its communication on the single market for green products.

New enzyme technology saves up to 5% corn in ethanol

Novozymes has announced the launch of new enzyme technology that can increase ethanol yield from corn by up to 5%. The technology also increases corn oil extraction by 13%, while saving 8% energy. The efficiency improvements can be achieved when two new enzymes, Spirizyme® Achieve and Olexa®, are used together with another Novozymes enzyme, Avantec®. “These new enzyme innovations offer strong benefits to ethanol producers,” says Andrew Fordyce, executive vice president for business operations at Novozymes. “It allows our customers to make more from less and substantially improve their profit margins”. A typical U.S. ethanol plant uses around 36 million bushels (900,000 tons) of feed-grade corn per year to produce 100 million gallons of fuel ethanol, 300,000 tons of animal feed (DDGS) and 8,500 tons of corn oil. By using Avantec, Olexa and Spirizyme Achieve, such a plant can save up to 1.8 million bushels (45,000 tons) of corn while maintaining the same ethanol output, increasing corn oil extraction, and generating up to $5 million in additional profit.

High yield, low risk Avantec was introduced in October 2012 and has been well received in the U.S. ethanol industry. “Our customers demand risk-free options that do not require major investments,” says Fordyce. “That is exactly what our enzymes offer. We are the first to market this full package and are looking forward to implementing it together with our customers, trialing the technology at their plants, and getting the solutions out there. It’s a competitive industry and only via innovation like this can Novozymes continue to be the leading supplier of enzymes to the ethanol industry”. Corn is the key raw material in biofuel production in the U.S. and by far the biggest cost component for an ethanol plant. After the corn is harvested, the kernels are ground into corn meal and water added to make a mash. Enzymes convert the starch in the mash to sugar, which can then be fermented to ethanol. Avantec and Spirizyme Achieve convert starch to sugar more efficiently than any other enzyme product on the market, while Olexa works by freeing up oil bound in the corn germ.

Corn oil is used in the production of animal feed, biodiesel and soaps, and has become an increasingly important revenue stream for ethanol producers. Extensive implementation of extraction technology from 2008 to 2012 has seen the industry record a nearly five-fold increase in corn oil production, according to a study by the University of Illinois. Novozymes estimates that approximately 80% of the operating ethanol capacity in the U.S. will have incorporated oil extraction into their plants by end 2013.

A new study has found that pigs fed a diet of genetically modified soy and corn are significantly more likely to suffer from stomach inflammation. The study was led by Judy Carman, director of the Institute of Health and Environmental Research in Australia. "Pigs have a similar digestive system to people, so we need to investigate if people are also getting digestive problems from eating (genetically modified) crops," said Carman. Read more...

Ecuador trade team visit focuses on U.S. wheat competitive advantages

In an increasingly competitive world wheat market, U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) must be positioned to help U.S. wheat farmers take advantage of any market opportunity. Ecuador presented one such chance after the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) lost its export monopoly control on August 1 2012. In the past year, USW has turned an ongoing relationship with flour millers in Ecuador into increased sales. This summer, USW will further foster greater demand in Ecuador by bringing a team of experienced Ecuadoran wheat buyers to the United States June 16 to 22 2013, to learn more about the advantages of U.S. wheat and the export supply system. “Despite heavy competition from the Canadian Wheat Board monopoly, USW managed to gain a decent share of the market,” said Alvaro de la Fuente, USW regional vice president, who will lead the trade mission. “Now, we are competing equally with Canada on the basis of quality and value and U.S. wheat commercial sales are up more than 50 percent year over year.” Ecuador has imported more than 540,000 metric tons of wheat per year on average since marketing year 2007/08. Canadian spring wheat made up the largest share of the total, but U.S. soft red winter (SRW), hard red winter (HRW) and soft white (SW) wheat commercial sales for 2012/13 (June to May) reached more than 7.6 million bushels (205,800 metric tons), compared to a five year average of 5.1 million bushels (139,000 metric tons). One of the goals of this trade mission is to demonstrate the value of HRW or blends of HRW and U.S. hard red spring (HRS) with SW or SRW compared to Canadian spring wheat. “With minor adjustments, bakers can lower their costs with flour blends milled from U.S. wheat without compromising quality,” de la Fuente said. The team’s first stop is Portland, OR, where there is access to U.S wheat supply systems from the wheat farms to end product education at the Wheat Marketing Center. Buyers will also learn how opportune it is to source multiple wheat classes and protein levels from the Pacific Northwest. In Oklahoma, the team will see HRW wheat in the field, observe how that wheat moves efficiently to market and get a first look at HRW quality for 2013/14. Price discovery, quality certification and trade considerations will be featured in the team’s final stop in Kansas City, MO. In addition to generous support from the Oklahoma Wheat Commission and USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service, USW worked with Kansas Wheat, the Oregon Wheat Commission, the Wheat Marketing Center, the Federal Grain Inspection Service and grain trade companies to organise the Ecuador trade team. 14

These solutions promote stronger growth and better feed conversion in suboptimal conditions in poultry production while at the same time have the potential to significantly reduce the usage of antibiotics. A first commercial product, Aloapur®, will reach the market in July of this year. A recent report by the Committee on Public Undertakings, headed by Congress’s Jagdambika Pal, of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports on the assessment of food grain management across the India. The report highlights the states’ lack of capability to manage operational stock of food grains - a majority of which is wasted due to insufficient storage facilities. Cargill to acquire Northstar Grain LLC assets

Cargill said it has reached an agreement to acquire the grain storage and crop inputs assets of Northstar Grain LLC and associated properties in Decatur in southwest Michigan. The assets will be acquired from Northstar Grain LLC. The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of June, pending routine due diligence. Terms were not disclosed. “Our ownership of these assets will mean that farmers will gain a competitive market for their grain, as well as an expert crop inputs team from a company that they can rely on,” said Ben Breazeale, leader of the Greater Indiana Farm Service group of Cargill AgHorizons U.S. “We also bring to the table industry-leading risk management products, personalized on-farm grain marketing services and excellent customer service. The assets include 4.5million bushels of storage space for corn, soybeans and wheat, and a crop inputs business. The site is served by the Norfolk Southern railroad, which provides access to markets in the eastern and southeastern United States.

UK looks set to call for EU relaxation on GM crops

British prime minister, David Cameron, has come out in support of relaxing the rules governing GM crops. At present, small-scale trials are in operation in the UK but the use of GM ingredients such as grains in human foods is banned. Speaking to entrepreneurs and businessmen at a pre-G8 event in east London, Cameron said, “In the terms of the openness to innovation I would argue that we need to ensure a pro-science culture. “I think there are a number of subjects there that we need to take on, I think it is time to look again at the whole issue for GM food. We need to be open to arguments from science.” The comments come ahead of environment secretary, Owen Paterson's speech on Thursday which will reportedly call for EU restrictions on the cultivation of GM crops to be relaxed. Finding the food, however, is the work of David Hull from Williamsburg. “I buy all of the grain we use to produce feed at the Waverly mill of Murphy-Brown LLC for their hogs,” said the merchandiser. “We’re the largest hog producer in the world. Waverly alone uses about eight million bushels of grain annually, and on the East Coast it’s about 80 million bushels annually.” Read more... Greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture grew 1.6 percent per year during the decade after the year 2000, new FAO data presented in the yearbook show, with the sector's total annual output in 2010 reaching 5 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2 eq, a measure used to compare and aggregate different greenhouse gases). This equals 10 percent of all anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Among the various agriculture sectors, livestock activities and the use of synthetic fertiliser are the largest contributors. This does not include emissions caused by land use change and wild fires. Issued annually, FAO's Statistical Yearbook is an authoritative compendium of data on the major trends shaping global food and agriculture today. Food production and supply Global crop production has expanded threefold over the past 50 years, largely through higher yields per unit of land and crop intensification. Global per capita food supply rose from about 2 200 kcal/day in the early 1960s to over 2 800 kcal/day by 2009. At 3 370 kcal/person/day, Europe currently has the highest average per capita food supply. Cereals occupy more than half of the world's harvested area and are the most important food source for human consumption. Of the 2.3 billion tonnes of cereals produced each year, 1 billion are destined for human consumption, 750 million tonnes are used as animal feed and 500 million tonnes are either processed by industry, used as seed, or wasted. Economic trends Following a decade of slower growth in the 1990s, global public spending on agricultural R&D increased steadily from $26.1 billion in 2000 to $31.7 billion in 2008. Most of this increase was driven by developing countries. China and India accounted for close to half of this growth, but other countries - particularly Argentina, Brazil, Iran, Nigeria and the Russian Federation - also significantly increased their spending on public agricultural R&D. Still, these trends mask the negative developments that have taken place in numerous smaller, poorer and less technologically advanced countries. Buoyed by high commodity prices, agriculture has demonstrated astonishing resilience during global economic turmoil. In 2010, agricultural value-added at the world level rose by 4 percent, in contrast to a 1 percent increase in overall GDP.

A new animal feed testing and sampling regime which starts its initial run this summer, will put the animal feed trade in Ireland ahead of every country in Europe. During a recent meeting of the Northern Ireland Grain Trade Association (NIGTA), Professor Chris Elliott, from the Global Food Security Unit at Queens University, congratulated NIGTA on having the foresight to utilise the scientific knowledge and modern technology to carry out this detailed sampling, and monitoring plan.

27/06/13: Explosion at elevator kills man; FAO Statistical Yearbook 2013; all aboard the grain train

A man has died in an explosion at a grain elevator in Indiana, USA. James Swank, 67, was working at the Co-alliance owned facility, Union Mills the when the explosion happened on Monday June 24, 2013. The cause of the accident is as yet unknown but the focus of investigations is on grain ignition. On Tuesday June 25, 2013, a fire broke out on one of the conveyor belts at the top of the elevator. This fire was a result of smoldering grain from the original incident and as a precaution, 30 nearby residences were evacuated. In a statement, Co-Alliance says that there are now 'hot spots' of concern in five grain silos which are being watched closely by local fire agencies on the scene, Nationwide Insurance's grain salvage expert, and Co-Alliance professionals. In three of the five concerning bins, the fire department has added water in an effort to remedy the situation. Next steps of action are being determined for the remaining issues. More information... European food and drink industry heads towards zero fossil CO2 emissions

Campden BRI and the University of Newcastle upon Tyne are co-operating with organisations from Austria, Germany, Poland and Spain in an EU project to help the European food and beverage industry improve energy efficiency and reduce fossil carbon emissions, thus increasing competitiveness. The project was launched in April 2013 and is co-funded by the Intelligent Energy Programme of the European Union. It mainly addresses dairies, bakeries, the meat industry, the fish industry, cereals, and animal feed, breweries and producers of fruit juice. The project consortium will conduct 200 energy analyses in food and drink companies, looking at a company’s energy flows (especially the generation of heat and cold and their use in production processes) to determine possible measures for energy efficiency improvement, and options for using renewable energy sources – such as solar, thermal or biomass. From this group, 20 companies will be chosen for more detailed analysis, and five participants willing to implement measures within the project duration will be able to benefit from additional guidance. This is expected to lead to an actual emission reduction of 600 tons of fossil CO2 per year. The consortium will combine technological expertise of food and drink production with knowledge on energy efficiency and renewable resources to help users identify tailor-made solutions for optimising their processes and energy supply. At the core will be a calculation tool for balancing and optimising energy and material flow, which will incorporate the calculation of primary energy use and CO2 emissions, heat integration, use of efficiency and renewable energy technologies, calculation of profitability and the assessment of suitable process technologies. These calculations will be supported by guidelines for implementation and long lasting energy management in SMEs. The consortium will also address the question of funding mechanisms, as lack of financing is often a barrier for the uptake of innovative technologies to harness renewable energy sources or the implementation of energy efficiency measures, especially for SMEs.
