The Global Miller blog is an online offshoot of Grain and Feed Milling Technology magazine. While the bi-monthly magazine covers milling technology issues in-depth, the Global Miller takes a lighter approach. Our columnists have a keen eye for the most interesting, relevant and (let’s face it) bizarre milling stories from across the world. Each weekday we scour the internet for top-notch news and package it for your perusal in one neat daily digest. The Global Millers are also massive fans of industry events and shows and can often be found out on the road. Here they share stories (and photos) from their travels and, being unable to keep a secret, share details of upcoming events. But the Global Miller is your space too; feel free to comment and share your views.

The struggling rice milling industry in Sindh, Pakistan is to receive financial aid from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and the Sindh Enterprise Development Fund (SEDF). The State Bank of Pakistan has agreed to extend the credit finance to commercial banks for onward lending to rice millers at 6.25 percent in a bid to prop up the ailing industry. SEDF will deposit 30 percent of the principal amount with the SBP as credit guarantee and will earn a profit, as well. Of this, SEDF will pick up 6.25 percent due to rice millers and payable to the SBP to support rice millers. Read more... Food prices will rise quicker unless Britain embraces GM food, says the British Environment Secretary, Owen Paterson. 05/03/13: World grain supply; pig feed formulation; Melbourne grain exports on the up

There were only 67 days of grain supply in the world in January, says former World Bank president Robert Zoellick. The remark was made during a speech at the Forum for the Future of Agriculture conference which takes place today in Brussels, Belgium. Don't worry if you're not there, the event is being streamed online. More information... Canola, cottonseed, and sunflower products can replace soybean meal in diets fed to pigs, but they contain less protein and energy according to research conducted at the University of Illinois, USA. To determine if it makes economic sense to use them, producers need to know the concentrations and digestibility of the nutrients they contain. To help them make the decision, University of Illinois researchers examined amino acid digestibility for these products. "Soybean is by far the biggest oilseed crop in the world," said Hans Stein, professor of animal sciences. "But canola, cottonseed, and sunflowers are grown in areas where soybeans can’t grow. When the oil is taken out of the seed, meal is left over, as with soybean meal.” His team looked at amino acid digestibility in both intact canola seeds and canola meal, as well as in cottonseed meal, intact sunflower seeds, dehulled sunflower meal, and sunflower meal with hulls, on which there has been little recent digestibility research. The study included soybean meal for comparison. Read more... 4

12/03/2013: New enzyme to extend shelf-life; feed additive labeling: CLP vs current

Good news for bakers as Engrain announce new enzyme development that will extend the shelf life of packaged breads and other bread based products. 'Cerezesl' and 'Cerez soft', available for purchase through research products in the US, are specialised blends of enzymes that reduce the staling effect in packaged bread. The enzymes transform how the bread ages, resulting in a longer shelf life long after traditional products have begun to stale. "When it comes to the shelf life of bread, there are many factors which influence a consumer’s perception of the freshness of packaged sandwich bread. Two of the most critical factors which determine the freshness are softness of the bread and whether or not the bread has remained free of mold growth," Engrain said. Read more.. New legislation is set to change the classification and labeling of chemicals. The CLP project (classification labeling and packaging) aims to draw on the information of EU legislation with the GHS (Globally harmonised system of classification and labeling of chemicals) to identify hazardous chemicals and to inform users about these hazards. Until now the many different systems for classifying and labeling chemicals have been causing confusion, errors and misunderstandings among workers and consumers alike. Due to this, the main purpose of the CLP is to amend the system for classifying and labeling and have the same classification for chemicals in all countries. Read more...

Event: VIV Asia 2013 & Aquatic Asia 2013 opens with fanfare

VIV Asia celebrates its 22nd anniversary in Bangkok this year and its ninth event. Outlining its achievements over the years, Mr Gerard Leeuwenburgh, director of international exhibitions for VNU Exhibitions Europe and managing director of VNU Exhibitions Asia Pacific, told an audience of over 300 that this year's event had a hard act to follow to beat the achievement of 2011 when that event had seen an increase of 20 percent in exhibitor numbers to just over 700 coupled with over 29,000 visitors. However, 2013 was already looking to exceed those figures with more than 770 exhibitors from 48 countries attending Bangkok this year under both VIV Asia 2013 and Aquatic Asia 2013. "VIV Asia has establish itself as a must attend event in the animal husbandry calendar in Asia," he told his audience in an introduction. While China led the country list of most exhibitors, 133 in total, followed by Thailand with 76, India with 70, The Netherlands with 65 and France with 62, he said it was not just about volume and square metres that mattered. "It's the diversity of the complete production chains from feed to meat that is represented here," he added. He said he was also impressed with the 10 official country pavilions, a new CropTech-FeedTech Pavilion along with conferences and seminars too many to mention, making VIV Asia 2013 a full week of activities. He paid particular mention of the new VIV-Perendale Conference under the CropTech-FeedTech banner which was to be held later in the day as one of this year’s advances. The opening keynote address was delivered by David Heath, Member of Parliament, Minister of State for Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs for the United Kingdom followed by opening remarks by Yokol Limiamthong, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives for Thailand. The opening finished with a photo shoot before the VIPs toured the show.

14/03/2013: New survey to detail global hunger; Cargill to start noise mitigation project; Biomin mycotoxin app

The United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) is set to field test a new, more precise way of measuring hunger and food insecurity across the world. The 'voices of hunger' project will use several pilot countries, through a carefully designed annual survey to be conducted in collaboration with polling specialists Gallup Inc, to gather information on the extent and severity of hunger. In line with UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon's Zero Hunger challenge, the pilot countries - which include Angola, Ethiopia, Malawi and Niger have agreed to move toward the complete eradication of hunger. The plan is to then extend the survey to more than 160,000 respondents in up to 150 countries covered by the Gallup World Poll and to publish updated results on each country every year. Read more...

Having received the necessary project permits from the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (VFPA), Cargill can now move forward with its noise mitigation project, first announced in April 2012.

The project, which supports efforts to reduce noise impact levels caused by Cargill’s grain terminal located on Vancouver’s North Shore will consist of the installation of two fan exhaust silencers, eight dust collector silencers as well as the installation of sound absorbing barriers along the north side of the facility. The project also includes the re-distribution of ventilation fans to reduce noise levels for the nearest residences. 12

By operating in 128 countries, Alltech can help provide local understanding as well as a global view to this discussion,” said Dr Mark Pearse Lyons, Alltech vice president, corporate affairs. Read more... Inorganic phosphorus is often the second most expensive nutrient in a diet, and consequently there is pressure to minimise dietary phosphorus safety margins. Most producers use a phytase enzyme and rely on the manufacturer’s recommended matrix value to determine how much added phosphorous can be removed from the diet. AB Vista stresses the need for feed producers to be aware of the safety margins placed on phytase matrices to ensure animal performance and profitability is not compromised and to make true efficacy comparisons between the different phytase products. With many phytase matrices derived from amalgamations of growth performance and/or digestibility trials, there is growing concern among nutritionists that the matrix values applied to a given phytase do not accurately represent the results seen in the field. Given that the inorganic P is the second most expensive nutrient in the diet, even small adjustments to the P matrix can result in significant cost savings when using a phytase. Field results with Quantum Blue consistently show that the matrix is achieved in the vast majority of cases where it is employed. As market economics continue to put pressure on P levels in diets, the robustness of claimed phytase matrices will be tested more than ever before, and as a result such conservative approaches to matrix derivation become more and more warranted.

14

THE GLOBAL MILLER | March 2013

Mike Bedford, Research Director, AB Vista; “With rising costs, decisions made on the P matrix of the phytase and the P requirements of the animal are now under intense scrutiny. As a result, safety margins in dietary P are under pressure, challenging the matrices of all phytases to a greater extent. Factors such as mineral levels in the diet and intrinsic animal metabolism will affect enzyme activity and consequently P release. At AB Vista we strongly recommend feed producers consider how the matrices are derived, taking into account the safety margins applied, in order to evaluate product efficacy.” Not all phytases matrices are derived in the same way and some use a 50 percent confidence limit. Quantum Blue matrix for available phosphorus is calculated based on a 90 percent confidence value, assuring customers that in 90 percent of the time Quantum Blue is included in the feed, it will release a P level equivalent to or higher than the recommended value. Extru-Tech, Inc. completes first of its kind petfood extrusion validation study

Maintaining their industry leadership role in food and product safety, Extru-Tech recently completed an industry-first scientific validation study that used a production-scale extruder to prove extrusion's effectiveness in controlling Salmonella in dry pet food. In effect, Extru-Tech’s scientific validation, which was conducted at the company’s Level 2 Bio-Safety Extrusion Lab in Manhattan, Kansas, proved the kill/lethality step of the extrusion system as an effective control against the persistent pathogen. Since 2010, the Food and Drug Administration has had a zero tolerance policy for Salmonella, which is why the pet food industry has experienced a dramatic increase in recalls over the past few years. However, even though every manufacturer strives for products that are 100 percent pathogen free, applicable and validated scientific studies to support properly designed pet food safety systems weren’t possible … until now. To this point, petfood manufacturers have relied on traditional lab studies based on testing equipment ranging from beakers and pressure pots to table-top model extruders. Moreover, most testing has been completed at very low production rates of 30 grams to a few kilogrammes per hour. In contrast, Extru-Tech configured a BSL-2 pilot plant outfitted with an E525 production-scale extrusion system, capable of producing nearly 8,000 pounds of product per hour, and the equipment was configured for the production of an industry-generic, low-moisture, dry-expanded pet food. The selected formula was then charged with a three-serotype cocktail of Salmonella, an inoculant that represents typical contamination events in the manufacturing process. As part of the study, Extru-Tech also considered the fact that a dry inoculant introduced into the ingredient stream better represents how the pathogens are usually present within contaminated raw ingredients. If Salmonella is in a liquid, which is often the case in research studies, heat will transfer quickly and kill it quickly. However, this is not a representation of what happens in a petfood plant, and creates a false set of operational parameters that do not control Salmonella. “Extru-tech is using actual equipment that you would find in most pet food plants in a bio-hazard laboratory or a pilot plant,” said Jim Marsden, PhD, regents distinguished professor at Kansas State University. “Raw materials can be inoculated with Salmonella or other pathogens and the effect of the extrusion process can be exactly quantified. This process is a breakthrough for the pet food industry.”

All three replications of the challenge study resulted in a log reduction of Salmonella that exceeded the 5-log reduction requirement of a CCP allocation. Extru-Tech also discovered that many readily available and scientific methods of inoculation rendered a result that was not truly representative of a contamination event because of the method by which the raw material was inoculated. “Extru-tech is documenting the parameters that are required to deactivate Salmonella in the extrusion process,” said Dr. Marsden. “There are other production steps that follow where Salmonella could re-contaminate the product. Consequently, Extru-tech is looking at those additional steps to identify interventions that could be applied downstream to prevent recontamination.” Extru-Tech, Inc., headquartered in Sabetha, Kansas, currently produces and markets one of the industry's most complete lines of extrusion processing systems, along with a full line of ancillary equipment and customised equipment solutions for specialised processes. Event: VIV Asia 2013 & Aquatic Asia 2013 ends

What a week this has been in Bangkok! The exhibitors spoken to by The Global Miller report a very successful event - both in terms of visitors numbers but more importantly in their relevance to the feed industry. Comments from the visitors we spoke to ranged from very good to fantastic. It appears that most were surprised at the numbers of feed manufacturers attending what might traditionally be considered a animal agriculture show alone. The organisers have been putting emphasis into the complete livestock production chain and feed has become a critical part of that process. According to Niek Reichgelt of VNU, the organisers of VIV Asia, says feed is part of the production chain and VIV represents all animals including fish and pets. He was instrumental is setting up the CropTechFeedTech conferences - which were hosted by Perendale and Watt Media - which proved most successful in generating interest for feed manufacturers in the event. "It's interesting that more than 30 percent of visitors have responsibility to some degree for both aquaculture and pet feeds. We are a complete livestock event and feed, in terms of machinery, ingredients and raw materials, is very much a part of that production chain," he says. "In fact, we are so happy with the outcome of the Perendale conference format that we will offer this at all of our events in Europe and Asia from now on. CropTech-FeedTech brings a debate about new technologies to the feed manufacturer and explains what industry is up to in terms of its product developments. Russia is the next VIV show at which we will offer this interactive format. We hope to also offer it in Mexico and again April 2014 in India," says Reichgelt. Some feed equipment companies' stands such as Buhler and a range of Chinese suppliers ranged from 100 to 180 square metres and were as impressive as any seen anywhere. All were on several occasions overflowing with visitors. In fact, two exhibitors reported they could not meet with all visitors a key points during the three day event. Friday afternoon, the last dray of the show, saw numbers dwindle somewhat but meaningful visitors were taking place as The Global Miller could still not get to some companies. VIV Asia must rank alongside IPPE, EuroTier and Victam as a must attend event for feed manufactures everywhere!

Aflatoxins pose new risk to European maize production

The European Commissions’ Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) has reported 10 notifications on aflatoxin B1 in maize of European origin since the last maize harvest in autumn 2012. In the 10 years prior to the last harvest -- between 2001 and 2011 -- a total of nine cases of aflatoxins were reported in maize. Aflatoxins have been mainly an “import problem” up to now. However, global warming is increasingly affecting the mycotoxin map in Europe, producing “tropical toxins” within Europe’s borders. This is most likely not the last case of aflatoxins in maize for European farmers. “Conditions are very favourable for the growth of Aspergillus in southern areas of the European mainland due to climate change. This means that Europe will have more homemade aflatoxin cases in its crops in the future.” says Prof. Rudolf Krska, an international mycotoxin expert from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) in Vienna, Austria. “The food & feed industry has to adapt its risk management to cope with this new threat and minimize aflatoxin exposure in Europe.” The origins of the contaminated maize reported in the RASFF were mainly southeastern Europe, including Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Serbia and in Italy. The average level of aflatoxin B1 was 59.28 ppb (parts per billion or µg/kg) and the maximum 204 ppb in Serbian maize – 10 times above the maximum level for feed. The EU regulatory limit for aflatoxin B1 in feedstuff is 20ppb, whereas in food it is 5ppb. Aflatoxin B1 is one of the most carcinogenic substances on the planet, 100 times more toxic than pesticides, for instance. The producing molds, which are different species of Aspergillus, have been mainly a problem in tropical regions and can either occur on the field, but also in inappropriate storing conditions. Major maize exporting nations such as Argentina, Brazil and the USA have developed risk-management systems over recent decades to handle the aflatoxin risk. Europe can take these examples to adapt their systems to this new reality where aflatoxins are now on the agenda. Testing for aflatoxins requires sophisticated sampling methods which need to be done at the very beginning of the supply chain to deal with the heterogenic distribution of this contaminant. Testing methods have to be very sensitive as limits are between 5 and 20 parts per billion (ppb). At the reception point, this testing can be done with lateral flow devices or Fluorometric methods. The reference method of choice in laboratories is nowadays LC-MS/MS, which is a technology that can simultaneously detect all major mycotoxins, including aflatoxins.tions. Major maize exporting nations such as Argentina, Brazil and the USA have developed risk-management systems over recent decades to handle the aflatoxin risk. Europe can take these examples to adapt their systems to this new reality where aflatoxins are now on the agenda.

19/03/2013: Flood affected farmers get free bags of grain; Man dies in accident at East Coast Viners Grain

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) administration has flagged-off the distribution of free bags of assorted grains to 642 farmers in 19 flood affected communities in Abaji. In response to the distribution, Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide, Minister of State for the FCT, noted that flood is an unpredictable risk in agriculture. “The Federal Government deemed it necessary to package a programme such as this to encourage people who were affected by the flood to keep them on their farming activities thereby boosting agricultural production and ensuring national food security”. The Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has allocated 8400 bags of maize and 6600 bags of guinea corn for distribution.

Event: XXVI FEFAC Congress

XXVI FEFAC Congress 5-8 JUNE 2013, Krakow, 'Staying profitable in volatile times' FEFAC President Mr Patrick Vanden Avenne and IZBA President Mr Adam Tanski, invite all partners of the European and international feed and livestock chain to join FEFAC’s Congress in Cracow to find out 'how to stay profitable in volatile times'. Key note speakers from the European Commission, including Deputy Director General Mr Jerzy Bogdan Plewa, the Polish Ministry of Agriculture, global financial institutions, market and food chain partners, and academia will present their views on how to maintain a vibrant livestock economy in a volatile market and political environment. They will discuss with the Congress audience on how our industry can meet both European and global consumer demand while ensuring the economic viability of livestock producers and value chain partners. At a time when the CAP reform proposals are moving to the final stage of the political negotiation process under the Irish EU Council Presidency, FEFAC’s Congress will provide a unique opportunity to take stock of the key measures which could help improve competitiveness of the EU livestock sector, including new initiatives for innovation and sustainable development in livestock agriculture. Adam Tanski highlighted that “FEFAC’s Congress delegates will discover with their own eyes how the Polish feed and livestock sector managed to take advantage of new business opportunities in the past decade since EU enlargement and how they plan to make the new CAP work for the benefit of Polish agriculture”. FEFAC President Patrick Vanden Avenne stated that “the only certainty we have today is that volatility is here to stay – our industry needs to support and encourage swift policy and market actions to develop the new financial risk management tools that allow our sector to stay profitable in the years ahead reaping the benefit from growing global consumer demand for products of animal origin.” Interested congress delegates can take advantage of the 'Early-bird' offer which will expire on March 31, 2013. 25/03/2013: USGC Stepping Up in Venezuela; Canadian BioSystems expands team

The U.S. Grains Council has a long history of working in challenging environments, but site visits in an armored embassy van is not usually part of the program. A U.S. Grains Council team, in-country to explore opportunities to renew ties and reengage with loyal partners in the feed, livestock, poultry, and dairy sectors, was on the ground when longtime Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez succumbed to cancer. There were safer places to be during the first week in March, but the timing provided a unique opportunity to assess the future of the Council's engagement in Venezuela at a critical turning point in the country's history. Security was a concern even before President Chavez' death. From the moment they stepped off the plane, Latin America Regional Director Kurt Shultz and Alvaro Cordero, manager of global trade, were cautioned not to wear or show items such as watches, to avoid taxis and public transport, and to use only prearranged transportation from reliable firms. The homicide rate is among the world's highest, and kidnappings are commonplace; at one meeting, a sixty-seven year old businessman described a 25-day ordeal before he succeeded in ransoming his son. Nor is security the only concern: one meeting, at a modern business office, was interrupted six times by power outages. Unpredictable spot shortages of basic consumer goods are frequent. Import licenses for grain can take four to six months. Government controls business access to capital, while a 400 percent spread between the official and the black market exchange rates makes every transaction a currency play. In short, Venezuela is a challenging place to do business. Read more...

Peasant farmers’ markets in Colombia

Since the late 1940s Colombia has had a long string of what may arguably be the most anti-peasant governments in the world. Between the army, paramilitary death squads, armed drug traffickers, and the crossfire between the various guerilla movements and government forces, several hundred thousand peasant farmers have been killed. Decades of anti-communist government propaganda have led city dwellers to virtually equate the word “campesino” (peasant farmer) with “subversive,” in a climate where the extra-judicial killing of subversives is “normal.”

How then did Colombian peasant organisations – some of whom are members of La Via Campesina, and others that are allies – together with nuns who promote ecological farming, and academic researchers in the city, win a very good public policy in the capital of Bogotá to promote peasant farmers’ markets? In the mid-2000s, the mayor’s office wanted to restructure the distribution of fresh produce in the capital by creating a series of transfer point markets between rural agribusiness and giant super-market chains. By 2010, some 2,500 peasant families were doing more than USD 2 million in annual business. Today the peasant markets in Bogotá are contributing mightily to food sovereignty, providing peasants from four provinces with a very profitable market option, have given political training that is dynamising the struggle for food sovereignty policies in home municipalities, are changing Society’s perception of peasants in a very positive way, and are using a gentle touch to promote the transition to agroecology. 27/03/2013: Rothamsted applies for autumn GM wheat trial; ‘Dangerous’ levels of gas at Graincorp depot in Dingo

Rothamsted Research has submitted an application to DEFRA to plant autumn-sown wheat as part of its GM wheat trial. The application requests permission to conduct the winter sowing of Cadenza wheat, which involves exactly the same GM lines and experimental design as the current spring-sown experiment. Scientists believe the extension of the trial would allow them to study the effects of autumn aphid infestations on their experimental aphid-repelling wheat. They say autumn-sown Cadenza wheat engineered to repel aphids - a major crop pest - would allow them to gain further data for the experiment. "With the trial up and running, it seems sensible to make this small adjustment," said John Pickett, head of chemical ecology at Rothamsted Research. He added, "This additional data will add a great deal of value to the overall investigation by testing our wheat plant under a more varied range of environmental conditions throughout the year and in accordance with the different times of the year farmers plant their wheat." The request to DEFRA will be assessed by the independent Advisory Committee on Releases to the Environment (ACRE) and by members of the public during a 60-day consultation period. Read more... Duaringa police are investigating an incident of dangerously high levels of a chemical gas found at Graincorp's Dingo depot this month. Sergeant Paul James said police and an expert Graincorp clean-up crew were called to the depot after two drivers tried to unload grain with Phosphine gas readings of 57  parts per million and higher. Phosphine levels over 50  ppm are considered to be immediately dangerous to life and health of farm workers, drivers and the public. "It would appear the truckies have transported the grain to Dingo, maybe the night before, and placed their Phosphine (tablets) in cut-down 1.25l coke bottles, put water in there and put it with the grain, pulled over the tarp and gone to bed," Sgt James said. "In the morning the containers were almost depleted and they have thrown them into the Dingo roadhouse bin and gone to Graincorp where the grain has been tested and… Graincorp staff have said no we're not taking it because it is way beyond what is safe and legal." He added that police recovered the evidence from the roadhouse bin and disposed of it safely. The grain's property of origin is unknown. Read more...

'Growing Forward 2' Agricultural programs launched in Alberta

Gerry Ritz, federal agriculture minister and Verlyn Olson, Alberta agriculture and rural development minister, announced the signing of the Canada-Alberta 'Growing Forward 2' agreement on March 25 2013. “This agreement is an important milestone in our continued efforts to deliver effective programs that farmers need to compete in global markets, while positioning Canada as a strong leader in agriculture,” said Ritz. “We will continue to work together to ensure that targeted investments in priority areas benefit the entire sector through increased productivity, jobs and economic growth.” Alberta’s farmers and the agri-food sector will benefit from a $406 million investment provided through more than 30 new or enhanced programs focused on priorities like international market development, food safety, agri-business innovation, research and environmental management. 25

This funding is part of the $3 billion Growing Forward 2 initiative announced in 2012 and highlighted in Canada’s Economic Action Plan 2013. The five-year agreement with provincial and territorial governments supports innovation, competitiveness and market development in agriculture. “As the province’s largest renewable resource industry, agriculture holds tremendous potential,” said Olson. “Through Growing Forward 2, we are providing our producers and entrepreneurs with the tools they need to build their businesses and further diversify Alberta’s economy.” Growing Forward 2 focuses on the future prosperity of the sector, with a more than 50 per cent increase in cost-shared investment in strategic initiatives and programs to strengthen the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of Canadian agriculture. FEFANA celebrates 50th anniversary

FEFANA marked its 50th Anniversary with a sustainability workshop and a celebratory event in Brussels. The first statutes of FEFANA were signed in 1963 by the National Associations of Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. The EU Association of Specialty Feed Ingredients and their Mixtures celebrated this important milestone with a Workshop on Sustainability, held in Brussels on the 21 March and attended by over 80 delegates from the FEFANA Membership, which now counts more than 100 companies from 28 countries across Europe. The Workshop comprised presentations by internationally renowned experts on sustainability such as Henning Steinfeld, head of the livestock sector analysis and policy branch at FAO; Hans Blonk, expert in the environmental assessment of food products; and Koen Boone, Director Europe of The Sustainability Consortium. That same evening, FEFANA held its celebratory 50th Anniversary event at the Museum of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, with more than 100 invitees comprising representatives from national authorities, the European Commission, and fellow associations active in the food and feed chain. The event was opened with a speech by FEFANA President Marco Bruni, who focused on the specialty feed ingredients industry’s achievements in the past 50 years and its continuous support to the European Union policies aimed at ensuring the highest standards of food and feed safety. Mr Bruni also stressed the current and future opportunities and challenges faced by association. The future of the specialty feed ingredients industry is of course intertwined with that of livestock production in Europe and worldwide.

28/03/2013: Batch of grain stolen from strategic reserve in Arkhangelsk; US grain futures rise after crop damage

A large batch of grain worth over 200 million rubles ($6,440,066.49) has been stolen from a strategic grain reserve at the Arkhangelsk bakery plant. Agents of the Arkhangelsk FSB department together with experts of the Vologda territorial reserve, who inspected the grain storage containers, have established the fact of the theft of strategically important grain. The grain containers were equipped with tents adjusted on different levels to give the impression of being fully packed, while in fact they were empty. According to preliminary estimates, the losses inflicted on the state totaled more than 220 million rubles ($7,084,073.14), the press service said. Read more... 26

Wheat may be scarcer in the coming months because a hard freeze stretching from Tennessee to Texas killed some crops this week, analysts said. "We did see some wheat damaged overnight," said Sterling Smith, vice president with Citibank Institutional Client Group. "The wheat was the spark that got things moving." Trading has been relatively quiet this week ahead of a government report on grain stocks. The report will likely show corn supplies at a 15-year low, said Smith. Traders are bidding up grains because they expect demand to increase after the report is released. Read more...

Grain exporters owe Argentina $1 Billion in taxes

Cargill Inc. and Bunge Ltd. are among a long list of grain exporters that owe the Argentine government $951 million in taxes and won’t be eligible for a reduced interest rate under a payment plan unveiled by the government. Argentina will reduce monthly interest charges to 1.35 percent from 2 percent for some unpaid taxes that were due Feb. 28. The payments can be made in as many as 120 monthly installments, the government said.

“Grain exporters have been excluded as they were disingenuous and therefore don’t deserve a plan to regularise their situation,” Ricardo Echegaray, head of Argentina’s Federal Administration of Public Revenue, (AFIP) said at a press conference in Buenos Aires. The nation is seeking full repayment with interest from Cargill ($228 million) and Bunge (BG) ($126.3 million). Read more...
