Registration open for AFIA regulatory training short course

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) is offering a 2013 Regulatory Training Short Course (RTS) from November 20-21, 2013. The short course will be held at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel, Virginia, USA. “This course is a high-demand seminar that always sells out quickly,” said Leah Wilkinson, AFIA’s director of ingredients, pet food and state affairs. “It is AFIA’s third time offering the course and we anticipate not only a full room yet again, but have lined up influential speakers discussing topics beneficial to those serving the regulatory side of the feed industry.” The programming is an opportunity for regulatory professionals in the feed, ingredient and pet food industries to come together to develop the necessary skills to lead their company through the regulatory maze. RTS was created for regulatory directors with several years of industry experience and will cover advanced topics and regulatory strategies. The seminar will include topics such as the Food Safety Modernization Act, Working with State Regulators and AAFCO and Preparing for and Dealing with a FDA Inspection. This year, AFIA will offer an Introduction to Feed Regulation in the U.S. seminar prior to the two-day event for attendees new to the regulatory area for an additional fee. The seminar has limited attendance in order to focus more on individual instruction and will be held on November 19, 2013 at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel. Now, the state of Himachal Pradesh in Northern India has asked the government to provide wheat flour in place of wheat grain. Speaking at the food ministers conference in New Delhi, GS Bali, food civil supplies minister said there were no grinding facilities for wheat grain in remote and rural areas of the state. Read more... Canadian oilseed producers will soon benefit from research in innovative oilseed varieties with the help of investments of the Canadian government. Gerry Ritz, Canadian agriculture minister recently announced news of a new Soy 20/20 project that aims to research and develop new varieties of oilseed crops in Canada. This investment of CAD$3.7 million will help the Soy 20/20 project develop market-ready varieties of camelina sativa to growers across Canada and will help increase the value of the oil for industrial use. Read more... Community development organisation ACD/VOCA boasts successful work with Ethiopian smallholder livestock producers. Thanks to a cooperative agreement worth almost USD$14 million, which was awarded to the organisation on 12th September 2013 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, ACD/VOCA has established The Feed Enhancement for Ethiopian Development (FEED II) project. Ethiopia’s livestock population is the largest on the African continent, with an estimated 80 million cattle, sheep, goats and camels and 32 million poultry. The project will increase livestock and poultry productivity by continuing to develop Ethiopia’s animal feed sector. Read more...

First Canada Western amber durum quality data released

Protein content data from the 2013 Canada Western amber durum harvest from one crop region have just been released at www.grainscanada. gc.ca. Preliminary data will be updated every Tuesday as samples are received until the 2013 Harvest Sample Program ends. Quality data on amber durum wheat from four crop regions will be released in three phases: Protein content only by crop region and grade, based on individual samples received. Data will be updated weekly. Key functional parameters by crop region and grade, based on regional composites, when sufficient representative samples from each crop region have been received and composites have been made for analysis. Comprehensive quality analysis by grade based on final composites of all regions, as provided in previous years. Quality test results in the second phase will include test weight, hard vitreous kernel percentages, kernel weight, ash content, falling number and wheat pigment content. New this year, a table showing 10-year average protein content in No. 1 and No. 2 Canada Western amber durum by region is available.

02/10/13: Bike-powered mill; investment in US freight rail infastructure; invest in Indian grain storage - Rabobank

A bicycle-powered grain mill is helping to combat poverty in South Sudan. Invented by Canadian PhD student, Chris Hergesheimer, the bike mill can produce 1 kg of flour in 7-9 minutes. This is a remarkable contrast to the1.5-3 hours it takes to grind a family’s daily sorghum needs by hand. 4

Hergesheimer came up with the idea to give his arm muscles a break when milling small batches of flour for a farmers market in his native British Columbia. The design is relatively simple, using a chain and sprocket to connect the mill to a bike frame equipped with a seat, pedals and handles bars. The idea to export to invention to South Sudan came from one of Hergesheimer’s friends who moved to Canada following the civil war in Sudan in the 1990s. Now Hergesheimer is raising money to fund a trip to the country to build the mills with local people. Read more...

US freight railroad company, BNSF, plans to invest USD$90 million in rail upgrades in New Mexcio, USA.

The company will make signal improvements to five main line tracks through the Belen Terminal and add a locomotive servicing pit to the yard at Belen. It will also continue its robust track improvement program in New Mexico, which will include 2,100 miles of track surfacing and undercutting work, the replacement of about 160 miles of rail and more than 170,000 railroad ties, as well as significant signal upgrades for federally mandated positive train control (PTC). “BNSF’s capital investments in New Mexico will help ensure our network is prepared for growing demand for freight rail,” said Matthew K Rose, chairman and chief executive officer.

The time is right to invest in Indian grain storage, according to a report by Rabobank.

Demand for grain storage is expected to grow in the next five years with the drive coming from an envisaged grain-storage deficit, inadequate storage and the new Indian Food Security Bill. Rabobank predicts that in the long run, strategic players who prefer a relatively lower degree of government control will be investing; however, in the short-term, silos will attract investment on the back of government schemes and captive usage by private millers and processors. 03/10/2013: Second day of US government shutdown; Brazil tops US in corn exports; Haiti’s cereal production

The US Agriculture Department (USDA) has stopped its flood of statistical reports on the second day of a government shutdown. Inspections of meat are considered among essential services that will continue regardless of the shutdown. Depending on the length of the shutdown, the USDA may be forced to delay the release of its monthly crop estimates, which are due on October 11, 2013.

According to Doane Advisory Service, Brazil has officially passed the US as the world’s largest corn exporter, accounting for more than 25 percent of world wide total trade. If this expansion in Brazil’s corn sector continues, it may have a big impact on the US corn market. The exporter numbers are a result of the expansion of the safarinha or double-crop corn production which accounts for more than half of the 2012-13 crop. Read more... Reporting on Haiti’s 2013 spring cereal harvests, the FAO has reported that this season resulted in roughly half of the annual production of cereals, mainly maize and sorghum, but only a third of the rice output. Despite below average precipitation during the sowing period, a lack of tropical storms and flooding in the country has resulted in a recovery of maize yields. Read more...

07/10/2013: Chicken feed impacts on taste; silo featured in new transformers movie

Chickens on a poultry farm in Pennsylvania, USA have been fed scraps from some of the Cities most prestigious restaurants as part of an experiment to evaluate the impact different feed has on taste. In 2004, USDA scientists fed chickens soybeans plus either corn, wheat or sorghum, then boiled the meat in plastic bags and fed it to nine blindfolded taste-testers. The testers reported that corn-fed chickens tasted more strongly of meat broth and were less chewy than the wheat- or sorghum-fed birds. Read more... The abandoned grain silos on South Damen Avenue and West 29th Street in Pilsen, Chicago, USA will appear in Michael Bay’s 4th Transformer’s installment - “Age of Extinction” due to be released next year. In the upcoming film, the silos will be blown up. Bay’s and his crew wrapped filming in Chicago last week, finishing with what one production source called the “mother of all bombs.” Read more...

GRAPAS Awards entries open

You may think we have, over the past 150 years achieved all the progress we can towards creating an efficient milling industry the provides safe food at affordable prices and delivered to consumers on a timely basis. Not so.    There is still significant progress being made towards those objectives on an annual basis and the GRAPAS Awards are designed to recognise the advances being made by industry in an area that has largely disappeared from view. That recognition is made in the form of an award called GRAPAS, and is made at the milling industry’s most dedicated event - a three sector co-located exhibition held in Asia every two years and in Europe every fourth year. The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) in partnership with the Poultry Protein and Fat Council will sponsor the seventh annual Pet Food Conference on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, the first day of the International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE). 08/10/2013: Monsanto to acquire Climate Corporation; world food prices lowest in three years; professor of animal production

Chemical and agricultural biotechnology corporation, Monsanto has announced its agreement to acquire weather data company The Climate Corporation for approximately US$930 million. The acquisition will combine The Climate Corporation’s expertise in agriculture analytics and risk-management with Monsanto’s R&D capabilities, providing farmers with access to more information about the many factors that affect the success of their crops. According to the FAO, the decline in food prices was due to a 6.1 percent grain drop, while all other components of the index rose. 09/10/2013: US shutdown to impact Australian grain prices; UK’s special feeding program for piglets; IFIF re-appoints chairman

Australian grain prices are expected to fall if the US government services aren’t reinstated soon. Last week, President Barack Obama sent Federal employees home, effectively shutting down the United States Department of Agriculture, which usually employs over 100,000 staff. “Reality is, it could actually have a bit of an impact on us and our prices and a negative impact at the time of year that we can least afford that to happen, during harvest,” said Mae Connelly, grain marketer, Farmanco. 10/10/2013: Banned feed additive found in beef imports; new grain facility signs lease at port; Meriden appoints new international brand manager

South Korea has halted beef imports from the US after finding traces of the feed additive zilpaterol in a meat shipment. The substance, which is banned in the country, was detected in a 22-tonne shipment from Colorado-based Swift Beef Co. at the end of September 2013. According to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, South Korea have asked the US to investigate the matter. Read more... Mississippi based Rosedale-Bolivar County Port Commission and the Bolivar County Board of Supervisors, USA have entered into a lease agreement with a subsidiary of Louis Dreyfus Commodities LLC for the construction and operation of a new grain storage and barge loading facility at the Port of Rosedale. Louis Dreyfus Commodities, is set to invest more than US$20 million in constructing the facility, which will provide a new outlet for local farmers to sell corn and soybeans to the company, with an annual capacity of more than five million metric tons. The Guttridge Silo Sweep Auger is made from galvanised steel to improve longevity and reduce the risk of product contamination from flaking paint. Next year, for the first time ever, the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) will host a seminar to provide focusing on feed and feed ingredients export processes in the USA. The first seminar of its kind, ‘How to Export Feed and Feed Ingredients to the U.S.’ will be held during the International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE) which takes place from 28 - 30 January 2014 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. “Over the years AFIA has seen an increased interest and curiosity by IPPE participants in exporting feed and feed ingredients to the U.S.,” said Gina Tumbarello, AFIA manager of international trade. “The seminar is designed to address this growing demand by providing a variety of information from a diverse panel of speakers. 11/10/13: ICI acquires elevator from Cargill; The great global food gap; Calata corp’s own brand animal feed Agribusiness leader, Interstate Commodities, Inc.(ICI), has purchased Cargill’s grain elevator in Lincoln, Nebraska, USA.

Cargill has operated the Lincoln facility since 1999, when it acquired Continental Grain Company’s worldwide commodity marketing business “ICI was founded in 1947, purchasing distillery grains and selling to the feed industry throughout the eastern United States,” said Greg Oberting, CEO. “In recent years we have been focused on expanding through value-added service in agricultural commodity transportation and logistics. Acquiring the Lincoln facility is part of that strategy.” Although not strictly milling related, in light of global rising food prices, here’s a thought-provoking piece to kick start your Friday. According to an online survey by leading global information provider Nielsen, 85% of global consumers report that rising food prices will soon start to impact their choice of grocery products.

In the survey, 14% of global respondents indicated that they would soon buy more loose, unpackaged, unbranded cereal (such as rice, wheat and grains). 11% said they would stock up on fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables, and 8 percent said they would buy more canned fruits and vegetables. Back in May, British newspaper the Daily Mail published Snapshots of families’ weekly groceries from around the world, highlighting the everincreasing food gulf between nations. Philippine-based Calata Corporation has announced plans to distribute its own brand of animal feed made by the Chinese agribusiness operator, New Hope Group. New Hope is one of the largest feed producers in China with an annual production capacity of 26.6 million tons. It is also one of the largest suppliers of meat, egg and dairy product in China, providing more than 200 million poultry, and half a million tons of milk each year. “We are creating our own brand that will be manufactured by New Hope,” Joseph Calata, company chairman noted in a text message to reporters. “We will distribute this to the whole Philippines,” he added in a statement to the Philippine Stock Exchange.

Updated grain sampling guide from HGCA

Research and development company HGCA has published an updated grain sampling guide. The guide consolidates information from a range of existing publications into one publication, highlighting the best practices from across the supply chain. The new guide, which has been endorsed by industry organisations including AIC, MAGB, nabim, NFU, NFUS, Red Tractor Assurance, TASCC and UFU, covers recent developments in protocols as well as the essentials of when to sample and how to do it. “For growers, knowing the quality of your grain is essential so that you can store it then sell it effectively, and get the best return for your work,” says Jonathan Tipples, HGCA chairman,. “But the new guide is not just for growers. It has been drawn up with support across the supply chain, so it sets a benchmark for good sampling practice from the field to the weighbridge,” he added. The new guide highlights four key points for sampling grain. The first is to know the harvested quality so that growers can dry and cool the grain as necessary and identify potential buyers. 18

Protecting the harvested quality is the second stage. Stored well, grain quality should not deteriorate but store managers need to be on the lookout for any early signs of spoilage or infestation. Thirdly, when grain leaves the farm, it is important to get a sample of what is loaded onto the lorry. This provides a record of what has been sold and can show that the grain meets specifications. In addition, farm assurance schemes often require this type of sample to be retained to ensure traceability in the supply chain. The final stage for sampling is at commercial intake where buyers use automated equipment to take samples from lorries as they come in. These samples are used to confirm that the grain meets the specification and also to inform decisions about further processing. BS&B Safety Systems launch flameless vents for bucket elevators

Global expert in explosion protection technology, BS&B Safety Systems has launched a flameless venting system specific to bucket elevator operations, to protect against explosions. Bucket elevators, also known as grain legs, are used for hauling flowing bulk materials (namely grain and fertiliser) vertically. If an explosion happens inside a process or storage enclosure, the rapid rise in pressure will exert destructive forces in milliseconds, putting personnel and equipment at risk. The explosion venting IQR System™ comprises two parts, an explosion vent and a quenching module. The explosion vent responds rapidly to the building force of an expanding flameball and opens to relieve this pressure. As the developing fireball passes through the vent it is intercepted by the quenching module which retains the flames and hot gases, as well as the potentially toxic burning and unburnt dust. While the flameball temperature of a dust explosion can easily reach 500°C/ 932°F, the quenching module typically remains below 100°C/212°F, followed by rapid cool down due to its large surface area. This results in a negligible change in temperature in the surrounding environment. The system is an ideal solution for venting of explosions in bucket elevators that are located within, or partially within, a building or a zoned area where normal venting cannot occur. The vents are relatively lightweight, as they are smaller than standard flameless vents. BS&B Safety Systems offer organisations bucket elevator examinations and guidance regarding size and position of the venting with respect to international codes and standards, including NFPA 61 or VDI 2263 Part 8.1. Students, free range eggs and lupins….

UK free range egg supplier Birchgrove Eggs supplies Aberystwyth University, Wales, UK with over 4000 eggs per week, and in a commercial trial for a research project with scientists at the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS), they are feeding their hens a layers mash where most of the protein component of the feed is provided by yellow lupins instead of the usual soya protein. Soya traditionally made up a considerable percentage of the poultry feed and using a home grown alternative which does not affect egg quality contributes to assured provenance and sustainability. Birchgrove Eggs is undertaking an 18 week commercial trial as part of a collaborative research and development project between industry and academia where Aberystwyth University is one of 12 partners. The company is run by Tony and Gwen Burgess. “We are delighted to be partners in this important research project that has already shown the potential to generate real nutrition and possible future cost benefits for poultry producers across the UK,” said Tony Burgess. “Poultry feed costs are escalating and we are looking for home grown alternatives to the imported soya we have relied on over the years. Growing lupins in the UK to replace imported soya is a really excellent good news story – for consumers, farmers and wildlife. The research with IBERS is a great example of innovation and partnership through science.” The aim of the research and development project is to look at sweet (edible) lupins which are high in protein as a viable UK-grown alternative protein source to go into animal and fish feeds to replace as far as possible and ideally up to 100%, the soya protein component. IBERS experiments feeding laying hens with lupins found no significant impact on their feed and water intake, growth, weight, egg production or bird health. In fact the lupin based feed seemed to perform essentially the same as the standard feed in comparison. Soya prices are increasing and UK supplies are imported largely from South America, and the impact of their production in South America means that huge areas of land are turned over to soya production. “The UK and Europe has major issues with protein security within the livestock sector and are heavily dependent on imported soya. We need to find ways of increasing the amount of protein that can be grown “on-farm” in the UK. Research studies at IBERS have demonstrated the potential for lupins in laying hens and it is excellent to have this work taken forward in a large commercial scale study with Birchgrove,” said Nigel Scollan, Waitrose chair of sustainable agriculture at IBERS and the principal investigator on this research project

21/10/13: Estonian grain terminal built by farmers; Sorghum - a day to remember; exporting grain through the Amazon jungle

A new grain facility, the largest joint agriculture effort of its kind, has opened in Estonia. Roodevälja grain terminal, which boasts a 50,000 ton capacity, was built by members of farmer’s cooperative, Kevili at a cost of €8 million. Situated in Sõmeru parish, a rural municipality of Estonia, Roodevälja can receive 500 tonnes of grain per hour and conducts grain tests in 10 seconds. The terminal also includes a lab. Preparations are now under way for extensions of the terminal that aim to double the capacity. More information. Last Friday - a historical day in the agricultural world - saw the first-ever bulk shipment of US sorghum to China unloaded at the Guangzhou Port Facility, South China. The 60,000 metric ton shipment reinforces the continuing modernisation of China’s feed industry. Staff from the US Grains Council, representatives of buyers and sellers, port officials and US government representatives were present at the leading coastal hub port. More information. In support of an ever-expanding corn and soybean trade, Brazil has opened a new highway that offers exporters a shortcut through the Amazon jungle. It is estimated that the BR-163 highway, which connects Mato Grosso state’s soy belt with two key river ports, will boost grain exports by some 3 million tons next year, relieving congestion at ports in the southeast of the country. “We’ve been exporting through the wrong route, to Santos and Paranagua,” said Carlos Favaro, president of Mato Grosso soybean association, Aprosoja in reference to the ports on the southern coast. Ships there had to wait for 60 days to load grains last year and some frustrated buyers cancelled orders.” See supporting material here.

22/10/13: Danisco Animal Nutrition explores the benefits of feed additives beyond growth performance

Dr. Ajay Awati, development lead at DuPont subsidiary Danisco Animal Nutrition, will present on the topic “Benefits of Feed Additives Beyond Growth Related Performance for Animal Production” at the Animal Nutrition conference in Brussels on 23 October 2013. Dr. Awati - a qualified vet and doctor of Animal Sciences with over eight years healthy nutrition experience and an extensive back catalogue of peer reviewed publications - will argue that while the role that feed additives play in achieving growth performance is extremely important, their use can also contribute to broader animal and consumer welfare. 22/10/13: USDA releases crop reports despite complaints; ‘pig’ pin for sale at IPPE; the EU ‘PROteINSECT’ project

According to a US agriculture department official, crop reports will continue to be released during stock exchange trading hours. The reports will carry on in spite of complaints that high-speed traders have access to the data before it becomes available on public websites, reported international news agency Reuters. Crop reports used to be released when grain markets were closed. However, last year the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) began releasing its key monthly crop reports to the open grain market. A new EU-funded project, is currently being coordinated in the UK by The Food and Environment Research Agency (FERA) in collaboration with China, Africa and mainland Europe. In light of the increasing notion that insects can be utilised as an alternative protein source, the ‘PROteINSECT’ project is working to drive changes to EU legislation. Current legislation prohibits the inclusion of protein derived from insects in animal feed, with the exception of feed intended for fish or shellfish. Those involved in the PROteinSECT project hope that the research results will help promote the use of insects in pig and poultry feed in the future, particularly as these animals already consume insects as part of their natural diet. Her Excellency Laetitia van den Assum, ambassador of the Netherlands recently made her way to the East of England. As part of a fact-finding visit hosted by British leaders in animal feed, BOCM PAULS, Her Excellency visited the Tucks Mill site in Norfolk, UK. With the ability to produce more than 300,000 tonnes of pig and poultry feed annually, the mill is the largest operated by BOCM PAULS, which is owned by Europe’s largest livestock feed manufacturer, ForFarmers B.V., headquartered at Lochem in The Netherlands.

In sub-Saharan Africa, 70 per cent of the energy intake of the local diet is based on everyday foods such as cassava, maize, millet, or sorghum, but those staple foods do not provide sufficient nutrition. One consequences is high levels of malnutrition, particularly among children, which affects not only their health but also their cognitive development. Scientists are convinced that the right doses of micronutrients added to certain basic foods can fight malnutrition. The five and a half-year European Union-funded INSTAPA project undertook extensive research on the ground in Kenya and other sub-Saharan countries to identify practical ways of boosting the iron and zinc content of daily food. The project is being conducted by research scientists from Europe and Africa. A particularly promising approach has been found in the inclusion of yellow cassava in the diet instead of the usual white cassava. Yellow cassava has higher levels of beta-carotene, a pigment that the body can easily convert into vitamin A. Yellow cassava is thought to provide children with around 50 percent of their daily vitamin A needs. Iron and zinc supplements are known to have an effect on the cognitive development of children. The project team carried out trials giving children a multi-micronutrient powder with maize flour which is mixed in porridge and given daily for one year. After this the mental development of children is monitored over a three year period to identify the long term effects on cognitive development. Improved nutrition is hoped to have long-term benefits leading to a stronger, healthier population that will contribute more to economic development in the region. The next big challenge for the researchers is how to provide affordable enriched food to a widely rural, low-income and often isolated population. Inge D. Brouwer, the coordinator of the INSTAPA project at Wageningen University, in The Netherlands, believes that with the right business model, the INSTAPA approach can be profitable to the agro-food industry. “We are also trying to convince the food industry to go for ‘economies of scale’; that through lower prices and greater volume they can open up big new markets with less purchasing power and generate appropriate levels of profit,” says Ms Brouwer. She stresses the importance of strengthening the capacity of Africa’s own researchers in this area and a network of researchers and institutions specialised in micronutrition is being developed while a number of postgraduate students will receive training. Training manuals have already been incorporated into the curricula of some of the university courses in the participating countries and this will certainly have a significant impact on local research. “Through capacity building and by strengthening scientific and technological knowledge in the field of staple food-based approaches in Africa and Europe, the project is making a significant contribution towards improving the quality of diet of young children and their mothers living in resourcepoor areas in sub-Saharan Africa,” Ms Brouwer explains.

Although Zilmax is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), US meat packer Tyson recently suspended its purchase of the supplement following animal welfare concerns. 25/10/13: AFIA and NGFA release feed rules statement

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued proposed rules on Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and RiskBased Preventive Controls for Food for Animals. The release marks the latest set of proposed rules issued by the agency to implement the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). In response, the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) and National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA), both representing feed manufacturers’ interests in the US, issued the following joint statements today: “We are pleased to see these rules are now available for public comment,” said Richard Sellers, AFIA vice president of feed regulation and nutrition. “These rules will have a major impact on our members. We will begin implementing our plan to analyze the preventive control rules jointly with the Foreign Supplier Verification and the Accreditation of Third Party Auditors rules already released. We have asked the agency to extend the deadline for comments to match the preventive control rules deadline.” “Publishing the proposed preventive control rule for animal feed and pet food is another important step in FDA’s ongoing implementation of FSMA,” said David Fairfield, NGFA vice president of feed services. “We intend to work closely with AFIA, Pet Food Institute and other industry partners in developing comments on the proposed provisions to help ensure the requirements are achievable and facilitate the continued manufacture and distribution of safe animal feed and pet food.” See the proposed rules here. 25/10/13: Cargill’s new horse feed mill; African rice production; The Indiana grain industry

Food and agricultural producer Cargill has opened a new 140,000-ton capacity feed manufacturing facility in Louisiana, USA. The new mill will produce feed for the pet food, aquaculture, equine, beef, poultry, dairy, and wild game industries.

The facility has 53,000 square feet of warehouse space. Its tower is 231 feet tall, with 65 bins for grain, bulk ingredients, and finished feed. There are also six large storage bins outside of the tower. Two separate extruders allow the mill to produce pet food and specialty aqua feeds at the same time. Further information available here. The Cameroonian capital of Yaoundé was the setting for one of the largest gatherings of rice industry professionals, policy makers and farmer representatives at the the 3rd Africa Rice Congress, which drew to a close yesterday. During the gathering, more than 650 delegates from 60 countries, including 35 African nations called for help from the FAO to ‘stimulate national, regional and global partnerships to develop Africa’s rice sector’. Africa is expected to produce 27.2 million tonnes of rice this year, up by 2 percent over last year. Read the full FAO article. According to Purdue University, USA the mid-western state of Indiana has nearly 1.3 billion bushels of grain storage capacity. Estimates suggest however, that about 30 percent was unused last year. 25/10/13: Constraints threaten EU feed and livestock producers

The EU market requirements for feed materials, estimated at approximately 200 million tonnes/year and representing 15% of the global feed market, have started to deviate substantially from other continents because of societal and political dynamics, resulting in ever increasing constraints and specifications for our feed supply, says Ruud Tijssens, new president of The European Feed Manufacturers’ Federation (FEFAC) and director of corporate affairs in Agrifirm Group, based in The Netherlands. He succeeded Patrick Vanden Avenne, who has been FEFAC’s President since 2010, in June 2013.

“These developments have a direct effect on feed security for the longterm which could undermine the EU livestock industry’s competitiveness. The EU holds very different views and standards compared to other world regions when it comes to food safety, genetic modification of crops and sustainability. At the same time, the EU remains highly dependent on imports for the supply of several critical commodities, such as protein-rich feed materials and essential minerals, e.g. phosphates. In his Federation’s e-Newsletter published today, Mr Tijssens says, “The EU feed industry is faced with an increasingly complex supply of feed materials when doing business with its trading partners, as our companies operate on the same global market with powerful upcoming markets such as China and India, who don’t demand the same specifications. The EU already lost preferential buyer status for many key exporters as a result. “Feed business operators have to comply with very strict rules as regards EU food safety. “This led to the situation where the EU feed industry had to deal with an aflatoxin crisis this year because a large consignment of maize from South-Eastern Europe was deemed unsuitable for feed use, though this very same batch was eventually exported and processed as cattle feed in the United States because of more lenient standards.

Our sector already successfully demonstrated that innovative improvements in resource efficiency go hand in hand with environmental gains. “However, all the above-mentioned deviations create an unlevel playing field on the global market and may pose a serious threat to the competitiveness of the EU livestock industry in the long term.” He is calling on national governments and European institutions to work together with the whole EU feed and livestock chain in the current round of negotiations on Free Trade Agreements in order to secure access to the global market of feed materials. FEFAC does recognise and support the objective laid down in the new CAP to reducing our dependency on imports by supporting Research and Development, Innovation and Investment in the local production of vegetable protein and the safe feed use of processed animal protein, including insects, and former foodstuffs. However, the EU needs to establish a policy framework on food and feed security which identifies access to feed materials as a key strategic goal. After all, we want to maintain a sustainable livestock industry meeting societal demands, while creating added value and jobs in rural communities by taking advantage of the growing global demand for animal products, he adds.

The European Former Foodstuff Processors Association (EFFPA) focuses on the interests of businesses, which specialise in the processing of former foods for use in animal feed in all EU member states.

EFFPA held its 1st General Assembly in Brussels this month, aiming for an official launch of the association on 1 January 2014. It is a part of EFFPA’s mission to include as many operators as possible in the association, all for the benefit of a more professionalised former foodstuff processors sector. 30/10/13: Winter wheat variety brings better than expected yields in the US Pacific Northwest

Harvest results in the US Pacific Northwest indicate that AgriPro brand winter wheat variety, SY Ovation, which Syngenta released commercially to growers just last year, produced top yields throughout the region — as high as 16 bushels per acre better than average. “The results really speak for themselves,” said Ed Driskill, cereals key account manager, Syngenta, Moscow, Idaho on the Ag Professionals website recently. 35

“SY Ovation is an extremely well-rounded white wheat variety, proven to be high yielding with good threshability and very good end-use quality. Needless to say, growers who planted it last year are very pleased.” SY Ovation is the first commercially-released certified seed variety in the Pacific Northwest developed using doubled-haploid technology. Along with good stripe rust tolerance, it offers heavy test weights and excellent yield potential. In 2013, this translated to Idaho, Oregon and Washington dryland fields with yields ranging from more than 80 bushels per acre to almost 120 bushels per acre, and irrigated fields with yields close to 165 bushels per acre. 30/10/13: Decoupling US farm incomes safety net from actual plantings urged

Hot-off-the-press from the National Grain & Feed Trade Association in the USA As farm bill conferees convene today to begin the process of resolving differences between the House- and Senate-passed versions, the National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) sent a letter to the conferees making recommendations regarding the commodity section and Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). Concerning commodity programs, the NGFA urged congressional conferees to decouple farm income safety net programs from actual plantings. The NGFA noted that historically, when government commodity programs encourage planting that is inconsistent with market demand, it negatively affects markets, international trade relationships and the agriculture industry as a whole. The NGFA in particular warned that “linking any type of farm program income supports to actual plantings...could risk exposing the United States to potential trade challenges under the World Trade Organization.” The NGFA also urged conferees to reduce further the CRP acreage cap, while retaining language in the House-passed bill that would allow certain non-environmentally sensitive land to exit the CRP before contract expiration without penalty. Currently, the House-passed farm bill would reduce the existing 32-million-acre cap to 24 million acres, while the Senate version would lower it to 25 million acres - both through a gradual, stair-step approach over a period of years. The NGFA noted that the most recent CRP general sign-up results reflect the continued trend toward increased planting of crops on land suitable for production in response to market demand. If sign-ups remain steady over the next five years, the NGFA wrote, the resulting acres enrolled in the CRP would decline to less than 22 million acres. Meanwhile, the penalty-free early out provision in the House-passed farm bill would allow CRP contract holders to terminate their contracts in fiscal year 2014, provided the land meets specified criteria and has been enrolled in CRP for at least the previous five years. NGFA said its farm bill recommendations were designed to establish “a sound farm policy framework for agricultural producers, agribusinesses and the millions of Americans whose jobs depend on a vibrant and flourishing U.S. agriculture.” Established in 1896, the NGFA is a U.S.-based nonprofit trade association that consists of more than 1,050 companies from all sectors of the grain elevator, animal feed and feed ingredient, integrated livestock and poultry, grain processing, biofuels and exporting business.

NGFA-member companies operate more than 7,000 facilities nationwide that handle more than 70 percent of U.S. grains and oilseeds. Affiliated with the NGFA are 26 state and regional grain, feed and agribusiness trade associations. 30/10/13: Storage on farms need to be up-to-the-mark

Controlling insects and pests in grain storage required air-tight silos and other containers if farmers want to protect their crops, according to an industry storage expert from PCB Consulting, Peter Botta. He has been talking to farmers promoting a project that is part of a Grains Research and Development Corporation. Mr Botta has presented 38 times to growers over the past half year in the run up to harvest in an attempt to improve on-farm storage to protect quality and hygiene. Growing resistance to some insecticides and the removal of dichlorvos from the US market have heightened industry concerns about farm storage. Read the original story ….

31/10/13: AB Vista hosts conference presentation: Phytase can add serious value to European poultry production

In a recent presentation that took place during this year’s Union of Poultry Breeders of Ukraine annual conference, held from the 23 - 26 September 2013 in Sudak, Ukraine, Dr Rob ten Doeschate, technical director, AB Vista, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), reviewed the importance of phytase to European poultry producers. “Phytase feed enzymes are used by most poultry producers worldwide,” he stated. “Since their introduction to improve dietary phosphorus availability in the early 1990s, commercial phytase products have changed substantially, and are now capable of both delivering higher levels of phosphorus release per unit of activity and destroying a higher percentage of the phytase in the diet, giving better matrix values. “Superdosing is the addition of extra phytase capable of destroying phytate quickly and fully, which is perhaps the most exciting development in recent years. As phytate is an anti-nutrient, this will lead to performance improvements in the target animal greater than those expected from the simple release of nutrients due to added phytase,” Dr ten Doeschate added. “Typical responses to superdosing include improved live weight gain and feed intake leading to a significant improvement in feed conversion efficiency, with these results confirmed in independent university and commercial trials around the world.” The Union of Poultry Breeders of Ukraine conference is the largest annual feed industry event held in the Ukraine, with over 300 companies exhibiting in 2013. An audience of more than 60 people, representing all sectors of the Ukrainian poultry industry, attended Dr ten Doeschate’s presentation, which was organised by Brenntag Ukraine, the local distributor for AB Vista feed ingredients. “This was a fantastic opportunity for those involved in the Ukrainian poultry industry to hear first-hand from an expert on the potential benefits of phytase use in poultry diets, and to gain a better understanding of the negative impact phytate can have on performance,” said Anatoliy Klochko, Brenntag Ukraine’s division manager for animal nutrition. “There are still significant gains to be made from feed enzyme use here in the Ukraine, and the use of phytase to reduce costs and improve performance through superdosing is set to spread rapidly as the benefits become more widely recognised.”

Western Canada’s transport systems are under strain as a result of record grain harvests in the Canada’s prairie regions. According to reports from the Western Grain Elevators Asoociation, shipping terminals in Vancouver and Prince Rupert are running at capacity, prairie grain elevators are full and elevator operators require double number of current rail cars provided in order to to get the waves of grain off farms. “The situation this year is unprecedented,” said Wade Sobkowich, executive director of the Western Grain Elevators Association.
