Weather conditions increase the possibility of Aflatoxin in corn
Due to the weather conditions over the last few months in the US there is a worry of aflatoxin in the corn. Aflatoxin does not cause yield loss, but it does affect the quality, and quality loss is covered by farm level crop insurance plans contained in the COMBO. The levels of aflatoxin to monitor are above 20 parts per billion. The grain should be inspected and tested before it is put into storage, as federal crop insurance will not cover grain losses that was in storage. Read more...

Cambodia get first Chinese animal feed mill
In Cambodia region known as Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone (18 km west of central Phnom Penh). The first Chinese animal feed mill was inaugurated. This facility is one of five that have been built in Cambodia. The agriculture minister Chan Sarun said " the mill is very important to boost the development of the country's animal feeding industry." It is hoped that this new facility will reduce dependency on animal feed imports as well as increasing the supply locally. Read more ...

North-western Europe may get sustainable soybeans
Agrifirm the Dutch feed co-operative are actively involved in two research projects that are investigating the possibilities of growing soybeans in the north western Europe. Agrifirm are involved with the Round Table of Responsible Soy (RTRS) and initiatives of the Dutch feed industry (Nevedi) to import sustainable quality soybeans into the Country. Read more ...

New Feed mill in Iraq boosts Poultry industry
A recently completed and commissioned state of the arts feed mill located just outside the city of Erbil is boosting the poultry industry. The new mill is part of an on going strategy to support and boost the industry in Iraq, with quality finished feed product and hygiene. The plant can produce 210 tons of high quality feed per day based on a 14 hour working day, the mill is fully automated and capable of producing various feeds. Read more ...
Farm incomes will soar past the US$100 billion
For the first time in US history farm incomes will top the US$100 (€70.023 ) billion in 2011, this is due to increased cash receipts for everything from cotton to wheat, corn and soybean. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) said that US farm incomes will be about US$103.6 (€72.544) billion up US$24.5 (€17.156) billion or 31 percent on last year figure. "Many different crop and livestock categories are expected to achieve record high sales," said USDA. It forecast crop receipts to be 19 percent higher than in 2010 and livestock receipts to rise by nearly 16 percent. Read more ...

DDGS antibiotic issues recognised by US ethanol maker
Poet the US ethanol manufacture says that it will alter its production process so that it can promote and sell certified antibiotic free dried distillers grain with solubles (DDGS). The company has spent years developing an ethanol production process that does not require antibiotics. “We had to ensure that any adjustments in our process didn’t compromise that reputation. After a few years of testing and development, we’ve found that the DDGS from the antibiotic-free process are of the highest quality.” Read more ...

Antibiotic resistance is ancient
Scientist at McMasters University in Ontario has discovered that bacteria developing resistance to antibiotics is not new, about 100 years ago science was amazed at how quick antibiotic resistance was developed by bacteria. New findings shows that antibiotic resistance has been around at least 30,000 years, and it has been shown to be a natural development that predates the modern clinical antibiotic use. Read more ...
Russian grain exports frustrated by jammed railcars
The logistics of moving grain via rail-car in Russia is proving to be a major issue, after a jam with some 3,600 rail cars, the countries railway authority RZhD banned the transportation of grain to the main outlets on the Black-sea. This ban is putting pressure on buyers and dealers, who are having to source grain from other area of the country. Read more ...

China's clenbuterol scandal almost 1000 arrested
As part of a national cleanup in China after the clenbuterol scandal, the police from five provinces participated in a clean up operation. During the operation some 2.5 tons of clenbuterol was sized, 32 underground factories was closed as well as six illegal laboratories and 12 production lines, 2000 police officers took part. Argentina approves German company to sell GM soy seeds
German company Bayer CropScience has been allowed to sell its genetically modified soybean seeds in Argentina. They approved the liberty link soybean technology which involves transgenic seeds resistant to the herbicide glufosinate-ammonium, according to the company. Liberty Link will be combined with stacked traits and launched in Argentina "in the forthcoming years," the company said in a statement. Read more ...

Global Bio-Chem sees improvement in sales and profits
Global Bio Chem are doing well in China, sales volume and selling prices of their products have increased. The company has reported increases of 77 percent and 158 percent respectively in revenues and gross profits. The increase in revenue and gross profit is largely attributed to a year on year increase of 37 percent in sales and 24 percent in average selling price. Read more ...

Termin-8 liquid biocide launched in Saudi-Arabia
Anitox, has launched Termin-8 liquid biocide in Saudi-Arabia, this new liquid version of the powdered original is highly effective against both gram negative bacteria and gram positive. Anitox offers Termin-8 liquid biocide. The product is an alternative to heat treatment and prevents the recontamination of feed for up to 21 days. It leaves no residue in tissue, eggs or milk and there is no withdrawal period, according to the company. Read more ...
Russia subsidises feed purchasing
Russia's Ministry of agriculture of the Russian federation recently transferred five billion rubles (US$ 173 million), according to an official statement from the Ministry of Agriculture these subsidies should only be directed towards beef farmers/producers. Sorghum has potential in Southeast Asia?
The tropical conditions of Southeast Asia is well suited for Sorghum due to its low vulnerability to moulds and mycotoxins and its ability to be stored for longer. According to Adel Yusupov, US Grains Council regional director in Southeast Asia, there are two key reasons for its low use in the region. One is competitive pricing and consistent supply, the other reason is the colour, most consumers in this region prefer the deep yellow of the yolks, fats and skins of poultry and swine. Governor Andrew M Cuomo announced a US$15 million (€10.612 million) farm fund to assist farms and the communities in recovering from hurricane Irene. Govenor Cuomo said "I have seen first-hand the devastating damage to many New York farms as a result of Hurricane Irene and we must do all we can to help these farmers and our rural communities recover," he also said. "New York's agricultural industry is an important part of our state economy and the storm wreaked havoc on farms that many New Yorkers depend on for their livelihood. Adding natural plant extracts can reduce feed costs and farm odours According to scientist at the recent 242nd National Meeting of Exposition of the American Cemical Society (ACS), adding natural plant extracts can reduce feed costs and the odours on farms. One of the issues with odours is cow urine which is the source of ammonia emissions. Three studies were carried out, to determine how adding plant extracts called tannins to cow feed affects the emission of ammonia from dairy barn floors and farm fields fertilized with mixtures of cow manure and urine. Vietnamese - Swedish joint research into multi enzymes in fibrous diets for pigs
Vietnam and Sweden are jointly studying the influence of particle size and multi enzyme supplementation of fibrous diets on weaning (8-20 kg) and growing (20-40 kg) pigs. Record sowing of Biotect corn through out Europe because of the corn borer moth
Europe's top adherents of genetically modified seed Spain and Portugal have increased sowing of biotect corn to a record high this year because of the corn borer moth. Both countries have increased sowing of the GM seed Spain by 4.7 percent and Portugal by 50 percent. These increases were caused by last years high pressure of the corn borer moth, its larvae chews through the grain stem , but the Monsanto GM seed is resistant to this. Read more ...
When measuring GHG take the crop into account
A recent study carried out suggest that when taking measurements of Green House Gases (GHG) you should also take into account the crop itself. This study was published in the Journal of Environmental Quality and examined the farm practices such as tillage. Expressing emissions per unit of crop yield rather than on a more conventional areal basis produced very different results, says the study’s leader, Rod Venterea, research soil scientist with the USDA-ARS. Research into DDGS diets in growing to finishing pigs
A study carried out at Lyons research farm Ireland, look at diets containing maize dried distiller's grains with solubles, in growing-finishing pigs. The study looked at the response of growth performance, nitrogen and phosphorus excretion. The diet of the pigs was altered over time replacing wheat with DDGS and the results were monitored for growth performance, carcass characteristics, apparent nutrient digestibility, nitrogen (N) balance, phosphorus (P) balance and manure ammonia emissions. New joint venture plans animal feed plant in Vietnam
A new animal feed plant planned for Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in a joint investment between Japanese firm Sojitz and Kyodo Shiryo. The Animal feed plant will be built on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City, it is expected to be operational by 2013 and will have a total processing capacity of 200,000 tons annually. the Japanese companies will investment about 2 billion yen about (US$26 million). JBS and DeKalb have entered a joint venture involving its IA mill facility in Frytown. This new venture will be called Central Nutrition Services (CNS). CNS will initially focus on manufacturing superior quality livestock feeds and nutritional supplements for both JBS and DeKalb and their customers throughout the Midwest. Danisco has recently appointed Dr Gwendolyn Jones as there technical service manager in the US with Danisco Animal Nutrition. Dr Jones gained her animal science degree at Edinburgh University and her doctorate at Aberdeen University in animal nutrition. The chromosome they are all linked too is bovine chromosome 20, Bovine respiratory disease accounts for 75 percent of feedlot illnesses and up to 70 percent of all deaths, with economic losses to cattle producers exceeding US$1 billion (€719.42446 million) annually. Jamaica Broilers the main competitors to Caribbean broilers said the company does "not feed chicken to chicken." They now claim to be looking for alternative methods to dispose of waste chicken, one method is rendering "a process by which the parts are superheated, dehydrated and sterilised, resulting in a product which is in demand on the international market." Ethanol shows strong in the market and improves with July record
According to the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) reports Ethanol is doing extremely well according to the data released by the federal government. US ethanol exports were up in July setting a new record of 127.4 million gallons. The US is on target to export 900 million gallons of ethanol in 2011, RFA Vice President Geoff Cooper says that demand for a cleaner, more reliable alternative to oil is growing across the globe and America's ethanol producers are filling that need. Brazil grants rice export subsidy
The Brazilian government has reportedly granted an export subsidy of about R$53 (€23.025) per ton. Covering 117,711 metric tons of rice. The USA Rice is actively engaging the US Embassy in Brasilia and USDA and USTR in Washington to determine whether the PEP exceeds Brazil's commitments to the World Trade Organisation. Read more ...
USDA lowers corn supply
The monthly world demand and supply figures by the USDA were lowered, the USDA lowered total corn supplies by 442 million bushels with total corn use for this year is 400 million bushels as well as projected feed and residual use is lowered to 200 million bushel. Settlement for GM rice nears October 10, sign up deadline
In July it was announced that US$750 million (€551.876 million) settlement had been agreed to compensate farmers for losses associated with the 2006 Bayer-owned GM traits in exported US rice. October 10 is the deadline for farmers and landlords to sign up for the settlement. “No farmer is required to participate in the settlement, it’s certainly voluntary,” said St. Louis-based attorney Don Downing. However, “any farmer who wants to participate needs to sign up in the next couple of weeks, if not immediately.” Read more ...

The prediction for US corn for 2011-12 is forecast lower by 417 million bushels with yields down from last month across the corn belt. German animal nutrition company Schuamann has developed a new liquid feed, called Melovit with new combination's of active ingredients which include trace elements and vitamins. Melovit Flussig is used in the initial stages before vaccinations to improve performance in fattening. Melovit L is fed to laying hens and fattening poultry during critical periods and at peak laying times. Its combination of amino acids and magnesium increases metabolic efficiency, promotes kidney function and strengthens liver metabolism. Read more ...

A question being ask is on farm storage a good idea? well according to Professor Matt Roberts associate professor in the department of agricultural, environmental and development economics in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. "A lot of farmers will look at last year and see big gains to storage and think those type of opportunities will be on tap this year, but I think that is much less likely to be the case." New feed reducing stress in piglets
French animal nutrition company CCPA, launched its new feed for prestarter. They chose SPACE at Rennes, France to highlight their new feed for prestarter. The prestarter feed includes selected ingredients with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The novel product reduces piglet susceptibility to diseases by correcting oxidative stress around weaning and stimulating antioxidant defense mechanisms. In South-Central Kansas the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), is forecasting a 40 percent lower yield than last year, due to the drought that has hit parts of the United States. Wildfires in Texas causes $100 million in agricultural losses
Texas wildfires has hit the agricultural community hard with over US$100 million (â‚Ź72.632 million). Over 3.75 million acres has been burned with 2649 homes lost to the fire homes, 10 lives lost, the number of livestock lost is unknown as records for livestock losses are not well kept. The French government has maintained the ban on genetically modified (GM) maize and is refusing to lift its ban even though the European Union court of justice say the ban is out of line on procedural grounds. Farmers in California are starting to move towards a more environmentally friendly way of dealing with crop pests. A new report shows that farmers are clearly reducing their use of the older more heavily regulated pesticides in favour of the newer environmentally friendly methods to control pest. The Alliance for Food and Farming commissioned the report titled Pesticide Use Trends in California Agriculture, it shows that the use of old style pesticides had declined by some 66 percent over the last 12 years. US soybean futures fell again for the third day again, extending the losses on increased supply expectations. Soybean dropped nine cents to $13.82 (â‚Ź10.023) a bushel, wheat and corn rose slightly on the Chicago Board of Trade, the prices were pressured by federal forecasters projections that farmers will harvest more soybean than previous expected. Grain supplier from New Zealand found guilty of dishonest behaviour
J Swap Contractors has been ordered to pay NZ$4.6 million (€2.763 million) in damages after being found guilty of “dishonest” behaviour. The Family owned Hunter Grain accused J Swap of breach of trading partnership and conspiracy. Researchers from Virginia Tech and Agricultural Research Service USDA, have been able to reduce the toxicity of mycotoxin in barley (dried) for use in animal feed using a newly developed yeast that is transgenic. In the production of ethanol grains are dried and can be used for animal feeds but a fungal pathogen sometimes found in barley can cause lethal toxins called mycotoxin. This years weather has been difficult, not a typical year. But Iowa State University agriculture engineer Charles Hurburgh recommends leaving the crops out a little longer to dry out, but only if you know the stalks can hold on until the combine rolls. "If you determine that particular fields have stalk rot, which is prevalent this year, harvest those fields early and dry the corn. At current corn prices, drying is preferable to grain loss. At US$2 (â‚Ź1.466) per gallon for propane, the drying cost in an average dryer for one point of moisture is equal to about 0.25 percent field loss, with US$7 (â‚Ź5.13) corn". Read more ...

Rising feed costs could collapse Russia's livestock industry
Up-to the middle of 2011 feed mills were using stocks of cheap feed yielded in 2009, but as predicted by experts the cost of grain has increased and by October the price difference could reach 50 percent compared to last years prices. Official statistics show that prices have risen for feed from last year by 22-30 percent, this year grain prices had increased by 50-75 percent. The Center for Rural Affairs, and the Iowa Farmers Union, with financial support from the Leopold Center have released a report that show discrimination where sustainability in agriculture is concerned. The report shows how lenders and insurance companies distinguish between and treat conventional farming and sustainable and ranchers. United Soybean Board predicts India to import soybean by 2015
India is the fifth largest soybean producer in the world contributing about five percent to the global output but the United Soybean Board predicts India could become a net importer of soybean by 2015. In a presentation in Chicago, Illinois a danish food official said that the US uses approximately six times more antibiotics to produce 1-kg of meat than Denmark. A new hi tech feed plant is under construction for Kerala Feeds Ltd, Kerala's Chief Minister Oommen Chandy welcomes the new construction of this hi tech cattle feed factory. Chinese toxic feed crackdown means safer pork
After the mass crackdown that the Chinese government enforced on the illegal fat burning drug, that was being used as an additive in pig feed. The Chinese ministry of agriculture (MOA) announced that more of the country meat products are safe and free of clenbuterol. Sri Lanka: Feed miller arrested
After an investigation by the consumer authority in Sri Lanka, it was found that some rice millers in Polonnaruwa were found to be producing animal feed using rice that was fit for human consumption. Under Sri Lankan law, it is illegal to utilise rice that is fit for human consumption in animal feeds, it is illegal to sell or stock animal feed made this rice. Bio fuels research moving onto other feedstocks
The US department of agriculture announced a payment of US$3.1 million (€2.267 million) payment to UC Davis for research into alternative bio fuels. The research led by researchers at the University of Washington, well the US biofuels industry are mainly focused on corn-based ethanol, there is interest in alternative feed-stocks like tree trunks and limbs, leaves. Finnish feed company admitted using cow parts in their feed
Saarioinen's a Finnish feed company has been using cow parts in its animal feed production, and they have admitted that they been doing that for years. Cow intestines has been banned by officials as there are fears of it carrying mad cow disease or bovine spongiform encephalopathy. The problem was first brought to light by a Finnish Food Safety Authority (Evira) inspector in January. In South-Western Romania Cargill official Martin Schuldt, head of Cargill’s business in Romania, opened a new grain silo in Drobeta Turnu Severin the opening ceremony was attended by Marius Balu, president of Mehedinti county council, local authorities, Cargill employees and customers.
