R-Biopharm Rhône ventures into new international markets to find record sales and profits

R-Biopharm Rhône, one of Scotland’s most successful scientific exporters, has posted record sales and profits in a year of extraordinary growth fueled by a strong drive into new international markets. The company, which makes diagnostic test kits for use in the agri-food industry, saw turnover increase to £6.4 million in the year to December 2012, up by 21.5 percent on the same period in 2011. It is projecting sales of £7 million by the end of 2013, with an increase in profits of 28 percent . Growth in 2013 has already been boosted as a result of a significant increase in lab testing following the horse meat contamination scare, but most of the sales in 2012 and the first quarter of this year have been generated from organic growth and new export opportunities. “We have been very encouraged by continuing successes in markets abroad. Sales in Asia are up by 50-60 percent, in Latin America we have seen a 50 percent increase and we have significant growth in Eastern Europe too,” said Simon Bevis, managing director. The company, which is based in the West of Scotland Science Park in Glasgow, now has a headcount of more than 50, the highest in its 25-year history. It is now the biggest and most profitable subsidiary of its parent company, German diagnostics company R-Biopharm AG. The company makes diagnostic test kits and sells more than 75 percent of its output outside the UK to global food manufacturing businesses. The remaining sales are mainly in England. R-Biopharm Rhône is also planning to take on extra capability to generate new business from a unique new patented system, IMMUNOPREP® for on line analysis. This automated process will supersede existing methods which involve large amounts of manual work for lab staff, saving labs 25-30 percent of their costs. The system has already been launched at a series of high profile international events. 3

02/09/2013: Fortification of grain to curb anaemia; grain distribution starts in Delhi; Cargill’s corporate responsibility report

According to news information service allAfrica, nutritionists in Tanzania are supporting a recent study that demands the mandatory fortification of some cereals to lead to the near eradication of anaemia. Speaking exclusively to a local Tanzanian newspaper, Dr Joyceline Kaganda, training director, Food and Nutrition Centre (TFNC) Department of Nutrition Education stated that anaemia is a big problem, especially in children under five and women of child bearing age. “Based on the poor nutrition situation Tanzania is facing, there is a great need for mandatory fortification on some cereals,” added Kaganda. Read more... As of September 1, 2013, the Food Security Programme formally began the distribution of food grains in New Delhi. Sheila Dikshit, chief minister of New Delhi, distributed the food grains to the beneficiaries around the region. Two more rice mills in India have been accused of being involved in embezzling government paddy worth Rs. 7 crore. Officials from the Punjab State Cooperative Supply and Markfed lodged a criminal case against Goyal Rice and General Mill’s owner Kewal Krishan and Amit Kumar, owner of the Gaurav Rice and General Mill of Dharamkot. The accusations were originally made in July 2013 and investigations are underway into two different mills. Read more... The Grain Elevator and Processing Society (GEAPS) have earned the first professional credential in the grain handling industry, the Credential in Grain Operations Management (CGOM) from the GEAPS/Kansas State University Distance Education Program. To earn the CGOM, Cory Falke, Beachner Grain, Inc.; Calvin Kerr, Southpier Terminals; and John Rossman, Kokomo Grain, Inc. successfully completed an organized series of six online classes developed by GEAPS and Kansas State University. The courses cover topics ranging from facilities planning, to materials handling, to grain quality management. The Credentialing Program provides a formal training option to companies, and gives individuals a way to gain recognition and a competitive advantage in their careers. “Although experience is invaluable, industryrecognized training is one of the best ways to show … one’s knowledge [and] commitment to the job,” says Rossman, an operations manager. All courses in the programme were developed by industry professionals and are based on current industry practices and standards, providing real-world expertise. “I’ll be using the knowledge daily in practically every aspect of my job,” says Kerr, also an operations manager. Falke agrees that the courses have helped him to excel in his career. “I refer back to the course materials regularly. The knowledge gained in the material handling courses has been extremely useful in troubleshooting equipment problems and … making specification decisions on new equipment.”

05/09/2013: Grain loss in China; Alltech Global 500 held in Ireland; Japan imports feed wheat

A report compiled by the American Chemical Society (ACS) that looked at food waste in the People’s Republic of China has concluded that approximately 19 out of every 100 pounds of grain produced in the country goes to waste. The report, which was published in Environmental Science & Technology identifies the problem of food waste with an estimated one-third to one-half of food produced worldwide lost or wasted from farm to fork. Estimates suggest that the United States wastes about 40 percent of food crops. According to estimates, China needs to feed 21 percent of the world’s population, harvesting just 6 percent of the worlds water resources and 9 percent of arable land. Read more... According to Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, the country will import 59,350 tonnes of feed-quality wheat, and 3,000 tonnes of barley for livestock use. These figures are the result of a simultaneous buy and sell (SBS) auction that closed earlier this week. The ministry had sought 120,000 tonnes of feed wheat and 200,000 tonnes of feed barley in the tender. It is seeking the same amounts for each grain in a similar tender that will be held on September 11, 2013. Read more...

06/09/2013: Cargill’s pig feed mill; Russia tops in Egyptian wheat orders; Mozambique irrigation systems

Cargill has announced plans to construct a new state-of-the-art, feed mill in Hedrick, Iowa, US at a cost of US$29 million. The new feed mill, which will be capable of producing 350,000 tons of pelletized hog feed annually, is strategically located in proximity to the already established feedstock raw material supplies and hog finishing operations in southeast Iowa and northern Missouri. The feed mill is scheduled to be completed in late 2014. Read more... According to Egyptian grain officials, Russia has returned to prominence as a top exporter. This news comes after Egypt recently made their biggest wheat order of 2013.

Egypt’s grain authority purchased 355,000 tonnes of wheat, at a cost of US$94m, the biggest order since a 400,000 tonne deal back in December. Read more... Armando Guebuza, president of Mozambique, recently expressed his optimism with regard to new irrigation schemes that are currently under construction in the country. The new irrigation systems could see in the Xai-Xai district, located in the southern province of Gaza, Mozambique drastically reduce its import of rice. After visiting the Lower Limpopo Irrigation Scheme, Guebuza told local reporters that with the current expansion of the scheme, rice imports could be cut by 100,000 tonnes in the next few years.

Taiwan goodwill mission to sign letters of intent for wheat purchases

The Taiwan Flour Mills Association (TFMA) will sign a letter of intent in Washington, DC, September 10, 2013, to purchase up to 62.5 million bushels (1.7 million metric tons) of U.S. wheat, worth an estimated $484.5 million, over two years between 2014 and 2015. The signing ceremony at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center kicks off Taiwan’s formal Agricultural Trade Goodwill Mission to the United States to purchase grains and other agricultural products for the people of Taiwan. The Mission will also sign letters of intent with the U.S. Grains Council and the American Soybean Association and will call on members of the U.S. Congress and policy makers in the executive branch. TFMA will then continue its part of the Mission with visits to North Dakota, Montana, Idaho and Oregon to meet with state wheat commission and government representatives before returning to Taiwan September 17, 2013. U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) President Alan Tracy and Wei-Chang Chang, manager of Thai Ho Milling Co., Ltd., and executive director of TFMA, will co-sign the letter. Tracy said the U.S. wheat industry and Taiwan have a long history of mutually beneficial trade relations.

“Western Wheat Associates, one of the legacy organisations to USW, opened the first overseas marketing office in Taipei in 1966,” Tracy said. “Since that time, U.S. wheat farmers and Taiwan flour millers have built an enduring and successful partnership.” Taiwan is the sixth largest market for U.S. wheat, purchasing 520 million bushels (14.2 million metric tons) since 1998, worth an estimated $3.27 billion. Significant hard red spring (HRS) imports reflects a need for strong gluten flour for breads, rolls and frozen dough products as well as for blending with hard red winter (HRW) flour to make traditional Chinese flour foods and noodles. Soft white (SW) imports, including western white, help meet growing demand for cake, cookie and pastry flours. USW is the industry’s market development organisation working in more than 100 countries. The titles are available to download online. More information... The second phase of a rice genome sequencing project run by Vietnam and the UK was been launched in Hanoi, Vietnam. The first stage of the project successfully sequenced 36 lines of native Vietnamese rice. The next step is to characterise the genetic diversity of these 36 varieties of rice with particular attention being paid to tolerance to flooding, drought, pests and disease. As rice is a staple food for many people across the world this research will help ensure a sustainable food supply in the face of changing climate and a growing human population. Read more... As the 2013 grain harvest gets under way it is important for grain producers to take steps now to reduce potential insect infestations in stored grain, according to the Canadian Grain Commission. “Although this year was not as warm as the preceding summer, there is ample potential for stored grain insects to infest bins as grain comes in from harvest,” explains Brent Elliott, Infestation Control and Sanitation Officer. Before harvest Even before harvest begins, insects may be attracted to bins if there is enough debris for them to feed on. Producers can prepare their empty bins for storage by: Ensuring bins and areas around bins are clean and free of debris Repairing or sealing any cracks or crevices. Even small amounts of grain can attract insects. Treating bins with a registered insecticide 12

Cleaning and treating aeration plenums and spaces under bin floors where debris may collect and attract insects. After harvest To maintain overall grain quality and minimize insect pest problems once grain is in storage, producers should dry grain before storing it, if necessary, to bring it to the recommended moisture content. While daytime temperatures remain high, run fans only at night. When air temperature is cooler than grain, run fans 24 hours to cool and dry grain. The International Atom Energy Agency (IAEA)’s technical cooperation department and the FAO/IAEA programme of nuclear techniques in food and agriculture, supported the development of the new wheat, managing an international cooperation project to develop a variety of wheat that is resistant to wheat stem rust. 11/09/2013: Industry grain use set to rebound; livestock farmers oppose registration laws; FDA analysis of arsenic in rice

According to the International Grains Council, the amount of grains used to make industrial products, mainly ethanol and starch, will register the largest annual increase in four years during 2013-14. This expected rise is a result of record global maize production and a decline in grain prices The IGC forecasts world industrial use of grains in 2013-14 at 320.2 million tonnes, up 6 percent or 17.2 million tonnes from last year’s estimated 303 million tonnes. Read more... A livestock association in Oyo State, Nigeria has called for the review of animal farm, hatchery and feed mill registration laws to protect the livestock sub-sector of agriculture. The association, which comprises of the Poultry Association of Nigeria, Catfish Farmers Association of Nigeria, Pig Farmers Association of Nigeria and Animal Scientists Association of Nigeria made the call for the review. A statement jointly signed by the above associations and many others, expressed concerns that current registration laws did not take the plight of farmers into consideration. Read more... As part of ongoing efforts to monitor food safety, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has posted the results of its arsenic tests in approximately 1,300 samples of rice and rice products. While levels varied significantly depending on the product tested, scientists determined that the amount of detectable arsenic was too low in the rice and rice product samples to cause any immediate or short-term adverse health effects.

12/09/13: Grain barge found adrift; new Cargill CEO; Taiwan to buy $4 billion in US ag products A loaded grain barge has been apparently intentionally adrift in the Columbia river, Oregon, USA on Friday.

The crew of a passing tug boat spotted the 252-foot-long barge, which was floating unlit and unmanned near a staging area between Portland and Vancouver. Tidewater Barge Lines staff members had reported the barge missing at about 10 p.m. on Friday. The barge was towed back to the staging area where it had been moored. Read more... The Taiwan Feed Industry Association on behalf of the Taiwanese Agricultural Goodwill Mission has signed a letter of intent with the U.S. Grains Council committing to purchase 5 million metric tons (197 million bushels) of U.S. corn in 2014 and 2015. In addition, 0.5 million tons of distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) will be included in the memorandum. The total value of intended purchases is estimated to be nearly $4 billion, making Taiwan’s letter of intent evidence of a U.S. commitment to strengethen trade ties and maintain a well-established partnership with the nation. “Over the last 40 years, Taiwan has been one of the most import export markets for U.S. coarse grains and products,” said Julius Schaaf, USGC chairman. “With Taiwan producing less than one percent of its needed grains, the United States is able to be a major supplier to the nation. In 2011-2012, Taiwan was the sixth-largest U.S. corn market, the third-largest U.S. barley market and the seventh-largest U.S. sorghum market. The Council is proud of the partnership we have had with Taiwan for many years and are excited for the possibilities that continue to grow from this partnership.” The Council has played an integral role in building and sustaining close ties between the United States and Taiwan. Even though U.S. agriculture exports to Taiwan are facing increasing competition from other suppliers, the Council continues to offer customer service, through providing timely and objective market information and assuring the Taiwanese of the quality and reliability of U.S. coarse grains and products. Returning rains in the American Midwest have been linked to falling soybean commodity prices at the Chicago Board of Trade this week, reports Bloomberg. Increased moisture after a dry summer provides more favourable conditions for the crop, and with more rain expected in the northwest of the country speculators are expecting an increased supply. This follows a World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimate (WASDE) report last week revising down production estimates for the 2013/14 soy harvest by 106 million bushels, to a figure of 3.149 billion bushels. The global production estimate did not change, as South American forecasts offset the northern hemisphere’s projected shortfall. Global feed additive company Biomin has been granted EU-wide authorization for its new multi-species, host-specific probiotic. The probiotic will be marketed in the EU under the umbrella of the global PoultryStar brand, which has been improving chicken health and feed conversion ratios by stimulating beneficial gut microflora and improving pathogen resistance. With tightening restrictions on in-feed antibiotics all over the world, feed millers and livestock farmers will look upon this development with great interest. The additive has been cleared by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which determined it safe for animals, humans and the environment, and that it delivers the promised benefits to the target species. Michaela Mohnl, Director of Biomin’s Competence Center Microbials, emphasised the benefits: “Several feeding trials worldwide have already confirmed the efficacy of PoultryStar in alleviating a wide range of pathogenic conditions such as coccidiosis, necrotic enteritis, bacterial lameness and salmonellosis, in addition to improving performance parameters.” PoultryStar recently received great interest from European veterinary and nutritional experts, having been presented at the 18th World Veterinary Poultry Association Congress in France and the 19th European Symposium on Poultry Nutrition in Germany. 21

This positive development comes a year after USGC and USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service announced that a three and a half year effort to convince Algeria to remove a value added tax and custom tax on all feed imports to Algeria. Country Life’s Aslet weighs in on Attenborough debate

Broadcaster David Attenborough is wrong to say repeated famines in East Africa are caused by high birth rates, wrote Clive Aslet in Britain’s Daily Telegraph today. The Country Life editor-at-large argued that the problem is not of the world failing to produce enough food, but “the absence of it in the right places”. The advances in mechanization and information technology now common in British farms, not to mention developments in GM crops, ‘would fill the breadbaskets of the world to overflowing’ if exported to India, Africa and South America. Aslet went on to quote a 2011 Oxfam report arguing that a wholesale rejection of technological improvements in favour of smallscale “peasant” agriculture could “lock farmers into poverty”. He ended with a note of warning to British readers. The UK is not isolated from worldwide migration, and populations suffering from food shortages “will come knocking at our door”. While The Global Miller prefers to strike a less parochial tone, we share Aslet’s feeling that agricultural science and technology can and must prove David Attenborough’s concerns to be unfounded.

SPACE 2013: a record-beating show

The 27th SPACE held from 10th - 13th September 2013 in Rennes, France beat all attendance records for the number of visitors, in particular foreign visitors, number of exhibitors, size of the exhibition area and number of new products presented. There were 114,591 visitors (6% more than in 2012, beating the 2003 record) including 12,298 foreign visitors (+12%) from 110 countries. This increase in the number of visitors and the large area covered by stands (67,000 m² net exhibition area) helped to promote ideal conditions for trade and business discussions.

The official visit by the Prime Minister, Jean-Marc Ayrault, accompanied by Stéphane Le Foll and Guillaume Garot was the occasion for them to address the agricultural world. There were around fifty conferences and forums (a third of which dealt with subjects of international import) which were well attended. The high level of these discussions between experts and farmers helped to establish SPACE as an exceptional driver for discussion and progress in the agricultural sector.

The significant increase in the number of foreign visitors illustrates the position of SPACE as one of the leading animal production shows in the world. This increase, marked by a large number of visitors from Asia (China, Vietnam, etc) and West Africa, met the expectations of exhibitors for whom exports are the key to increasing sales and long-term stability. The large number of countries who sent representatives, the large number of foreign journalists (73) and the number of policy makers within these visiting delegations demonstrate that SPACE is representative of the animal production sector and a world-wide crossroads.

Innovation was also a feature of the 27th SPACE with 63 Innov’SPACE awards, 5 of which received a special prize. The Research and Development Village featured pig and poultry buildings of the future. Farmers were able to find the latest solutions in ergonomics, information technologies, energy management and environmental management. SPACE was also a unique occasion for showing breeds to buyers from all over the world. More than 400 farmers presented 12 different breeds of animal. The Open Space, organised for the first time by the Evolution group as part of the animal classes, demonstrated the progress made in genomics for genetic selection. Auction prices reached high levels (€8,400, a record for the Prim’Holstein breed) and several animals were sold to foreign buyers. This year’s show was overshadowed by the absence of its President, Jean-Michel Lemetayer, who died suddenly this summer. The tributes paid to him enabled everyone – family, friends, the organising team, VIPs, exhibitors, farmers and visitors – to honour his memory and confirm their determination to continue to expand this Show as he would have wished: an enjoyable event for professionals from all over the world. The government should create modern food grain storage facilities - each with a million tonne capacity - at 50 locations across the country, agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan has suggested. Swaminathan said the government will require 64 million tonnes of food grain every year to fulfil the commitment under the Food Security Law that was recently passed by Indian Parliament, that provides for 5 kg of food grain per month per person to 67 per cent of the country’s population. Guttridge Ltd, in partnership with main contractor Chief Industries UK Ltd, will supply all the materials handling equipment for a new chicken feed unit in Georgia, Russia. The new unit will be established at the heart of Chirina Ltd, the largest integrated chicken production business in the region. Chirina turned to Chief to supply a fully integrated system for the provision of its poultry feed plant for maize, wheat and soya bean handling. The facility used a selection of equipment from the Guttridge Carrier range for transportation of material, managing the bulk intake and bulk out-loading. A research paper by Standard Chartered PLC recently predicted that China would have to import 100 million tons of food a year within 20 to 30 years to avoid shortages. As a result of this, China is exploring the potential of using unused land in Uganda, Africa to grow food. Tress Bucyanayandi, agriculture minister of Uganda says he has no problem with China growing food in Africa to tackle its own growing food deficit. “Although the land belongs to people, they can enter into partnerships with the owners to develop it. We are running a liberal economy so there is no issue about them exporting the food back to China or the profit. They can take it,” said Bucyanayandi. Read more...

Grain industry consultant, Simon McNair calculates that grain handlers who own terminals have increased their market share from just over 40 percent, to more than 60 percent of the export market since deregulation in 2009. Pre-deregulation there were concerns that bulk handlers would get a regional monopoly similar to that of the Australian Wheat Board (AWB), Judging by McNair’s figures, it seems that these fears have come to fruition. However, the government is trying to tackle this issue. Following the recent election, the new Abbott government will progress with its yet-to-be completed mandatory code of conduct for port access. This would allow greater access arrangements to terminals for third parties, regardless of who owns the port terminal. Listen to the audio... Did you know you can die in a grain bin in 60 seconds? With the harvest season in full swing across much of the north hemisphere, it is worth refreshing your memory on the unique dangers of grain storage. In the past 50 years, more than 900 cases of grain engulfment have been reported with a fatality rate of 62 percent, according to Purdue University, Indiana, USA. more recently, in 2010, at least 26 US workers were killed in grain engulfments − the highest number on record. This is obviously worrying news for everyone, not just the grain industry. However, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), in partnership with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and Syngenta, is doing something about it. The organisation has launched the Soil Leadership Academy which aims to fill the gap in capacity building opportunities for policy makers to address land management issues, through distilling and sharing the latest science, knowledge and expertise in soil conservation and sustainable practice. Key objectives will be to: Develop an efficient, community, business and land user friendly decision making environment to prevent and reverse land degradation and desertification, to support soil conservation and facilitate greening of arid, semi-arid and dry-sub-humid regions of the world. Establish a network of business and business representative bodies/organizations for regular engagement with the UNCCD providing business solutions and inputs on sustainable land management to the convention and its parties in order to contribute towards building a land-degradation neutral world. “The Academy will serve as a source of state-of-the-art information related to soil conservation and land-management. The EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCFCAH) has authorized two BIOMIN products as “substances for reduction of the contamination of feed by mycotoxins”. Two products from the well-established Mycofix® product line of BIOMIN, Mycofix® Secure (bentonite/dioctahedral montmorillonite) and Biomin® BBSH 797 (Gen. nov. sp. nov., formerly Eubacterium), are slated to become the first-ever products authorized by the EU as substances with proven mycotoxin counteracting properties. Following the positive SCFCAH votes, the publication of the respective EU regulations would be the next and final stage towards confirming the scientific efficacy of Mycofix® Secure and Biomin® BBSH 797 as mycotoxin-deactivating products. Biomin® BBSH 797 is the first-ever product to receive this positive vote, thereby affirming its capability in the biodegradation of trichothecenes. The patented active bacterium in Biomin® BBSH 797 modifies the structure of these mycotoxins, a biotransformation process that renders trichothecenes such as deoxynivalenol (DON) harmless. This makes Biomin® BBSH 797 a valuable feed additive for pigs, considered the species most susceptible to in-feed DON contamination. Mycofix® Secure is a bentonite (dioctahedral montmorillonite) that fulfills the strict requirements on aflatoxin-binding capability according to the European Union Reference Laboratory (EURL). In cooperation with the EURL, BIOMIN developed an analytical method to characterize the AfB1binding capacity of bentonites which has now become a crucial part of the authorization process for aflatoxin binders. These efforts spearheaded by BIOMIN have paved the way for legalizing “aflatoxin-binding” as an official claim. The process towards the authorization of Mycofix® Secure and Biomin® BBSH 797 in the EU began when, on the initiative of BIOMIN, the EU Association of Specialty Feed Ingredients and their Mixtures, or FEFANA, established the Task Force Mycotoxins in 2005. In 2009, the Task Force succeeded in opening a new functional group for mycotoxin counteracting products, signifying a landmark development in the official approval of mycotoxin deactivating products within the EU. This led subsequently to the publication of stringent European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) guidance for anti-mycotoxin product registration—including proofs for mycotoxin and species specificity, efficacy and safety—which have generally deterred the industry from submitting dossiers for EU authorization of anti-mycotoxin feed additives. In 2010, BIOMIN, however, became the first feed additive company to submit a dossier to legalize the claim of ‘aflatoxin-binding’ properties (Mycofix® Secure). This was followed in 2012 with a dossier for the “biodegradation of trichothecenes” (Biomin® BBSH 797) for EU approval. After a thorough scientific evaluation process, BIOMIN became the first feed additive company to obtain positive opinions from EFSA on these technological feed additives capable of reducing the negative impacts of mycotoxins in animals.

According to a new study carried out by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), greenhouse gas emissions produced by the livestock sector could be cut by as much as 30 percent through a wider use of existing technologies and practices. Why is so little soy produced ‘responsibly’?

Only 3 percent or less of the world’s soy supply is currently certified under one of the standards designed to promote more responsible production, according to a new paper published today by KPMG International – A Roadmap to Responsible Soy: approaches to increase certification and reduce risk. This means that soy lags far behind other commodities where levels of certified production are much higher. For example, 50 percent of nonfarmed whitefish is now certified, 16 percent of coffee and 14 percent of global palm oil production.

The KPMG paper is published in collaboration with the Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH), WWF, FMO (the Netherlands Development Finance Company) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC). It is timed to coincide with the 8th International Conference on Responsible Soy (RT8) taking place in Beijing on May 28-29, 2013. A Roadmap to Responsible Soy, part of KPMG’s Sustainable Insight series, identifies the barriers preventing growth in certified responsible soy production and presents an action plan to overcome them. The four key barriers are: Weak market demand for certified soy Variable availability of certified soy Fragmentation of the certification landscape The cost of certification for soy farmers. Co-author of the paper, Jerwin Tholen of KPMG in the Netherlands, said, “Soy production is soaring driven by population growth and increasing wealth in the developing world. But as production grows so do the industry’s environmental and social impacts. The very low level of certified soy in the supply chain at the moment presents a risk to large-scale users of soy especially food producers and retailers. Global NGO and activist campaigns have targeted palm oil in recent years, but attention is also being paid to soy. “Addressing the barriers to responsible soy production is not a job for soy producers alone. It needs a collaborative approach across the supply chain from producers and end-users, traders and processors, investors and certification bodies, and governments and consumers.” Key actions recommended in the paper include: Increased commitment to certification by end users of soy including major food and retail brands Greater collaboration between the many and various certification schemes to align their assessment criteria and processes, and improve mutual recognition Financial support from soy processors to assist farmers in funding the upfront costs of certification Greater demand from banks for certification as a pre-condition to providing finance to companies in the soy supply chain More financial incentives for certification to be provided by governments, for example through their tax systems Analysis by KPMG has shown that there is a convincing business case for many soy farmers in the key producer countries of Argentina and Brazil to invest in certifying their production. The KPMG study, commissioned by IDH and co-funded by WWF, FMO and IFC, found that the average payback period for soy producers’ investment in certification is only 3 years and, for larger, better prepared farmers, can be as little as 1 year. Says Jerwin Tholen of KPMG said, “Given that end-user companies such as manufacturers of food, animal feed and biofuel, arguably face the greatest risks from slow progress towards certification, KPMG recommends that these companies should evaluate the issues and potential impacts, and develop a response strategy and plan of action.” A roadmap to responsible soy also includes a framework of actions to assist companies in developing an effective response strategy.

The CBH Group recently announced the completion of its 500th portable conveyor belt, known as a grain stacker. Matthew Newton, CBH country maintenance & engineering manager, says it’s an important milestone that is likely to lead to further improvements at receival sites. “The 500th stacker is the first to be automated, giving the operator the ability to fully operate the stacker from a distance,” said Newton. “Although this innovation is in its earliest stages, it is our goal that it will enable CBH to receive grain to an open bulk head without the assistance of an operator in the field, improve the level of safety and be energy efficient.”

The CBH Group is the first Australian company to design and produce a grain stackers; the latest model is the first to be automated. This development has been 30 years in the making. The first prototype stacker was built in 1983. “It was nicknamed Dino the Dinosaur by the operators on site, this was due the size of the stacker and how cumbersome it was to move around. The stacker was capable of 200 tph,” added Newton. “This latest stacker weighs 18.8 tonne, has a boom length of 23 m and extends to a height of 9m and it has the capacity to run at 500tph.” “We’re proud of this innovation and it’s important for CBH to strive for continuous improvements to meet current and future operational requirements, improve safety standards and manage its own energy usage.”

The CHS Foundation’s USD$500,000 contribution to the GEAPS Foundation’s Professional Development Programs Endowment Fund represents the largest contribution to the fund to date. The GEAPS/K-State Distance Education Program provides online, peerreviewed CEU courses taught by grain industry leaders in operations safety and grain quality management, facility design, materials handling and equipment maintenance. The courses help strengthen the skills of today’s workforce and grow the knowledge of tomorrow’s grain industry professionals. In 2012, the industry’s first-ever credentialing program, offering the Credential in grain operations management (CGOM), was added. “CHS and the CHS Foundation recognise that meeting the food needs of a growing population requires significant enhancements in our production systems. And, the health and safety of the workforce will be a key component. The GEAPS/K-State Distance Education Program is well suited to help meet that need,” said William Nelson, CHS vice president, corporate citizenship and president, CHS Foundation. “CHS’s leadership in supporting continued expansion of top quality education programs will help GEAPS and K-State develop the courses needed for grain industry workers to stay current with state-of the-art methodology to safely handle, store and process grain in order to maximize its quality and availability for food products,” said Bill Lyster, GEAPS International board chair and special projects manager, Ag Partners. 27/09/2013: Wheat port access approved by ACCC; USA and Japan organic trade partnership; land management practices The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has accepted Emerald Grain’s wheat port access undertaking agreement after feedback from industry counterparts.

“Emerald Grain is in favour of competition at ports and in the Australian grain market. Competition at Australian ports and grain storage facilities means a better return for Australian growers,” said John Warda, Emerald Grain Group general manager supply chain & operations. A report conducted by the international Economics of Land Degradation initiative states that the economic value of global land is undervalued and commonly determined by immediate agricultural or forestry market values. There are several ways to combat land degradation, including reforestation, sustainable agriculture and establishing alternative non-agricultural livelihoods (i.e. eco-tourism). The report suggests that if agricultural land productivity remains at its current levels, an estimated 6 million hectares of land (roughly the area of Norway) would need to be converted to agricultural production every year until at least 2030 to satisfy growing demand. Alltech has opened its first Asian 37+ mycotoxin analytical laboratory in Beijing, China.

Part of the Alltech Research Alliance programme, the lab uses a unique UPLC/MS/MS analytical technique that enables the company to investigate more than 30 different mycotoxins quantitatively and more than 50 others qualitatively in animal feed in less than 15 minutes per sample.
