GRAPAS EMEA 2019: The grain & rice processing event steps into maturity The VICTAM International and GRAPAS EMEA exhibitions are soon approaching!

From June 12 – 14th, you can visit are the world’s largest and dedicated events for the animal feed and grain milling & processing industries at the KoelnMesse in Cologne.

The GRAPAS conference was first launched in Europe in 2011, as the grain, flour and rice industry is of great importance to the VICTAM International exhibitors and visitors. In this month’s issue, we feature an article by Milling & Grain’s Group President, Darren Parris, concerning his recent trip to Turkey to visit one of the premium pasta exporters in the world; Nuh’un Ankara Makarnasi.

This powerhouse company provide an amazing 15,000 tonnes of pasta per month and none of it is handled by human hands- their operations completely carried out by Bühler machinery.

Unknown to many people, Turkey are actually the second most popular country in the world, in terms of pasta production. They are second only to Italy and their pasta is widely exported worldwide.

Studies remark that the pasta market is predicted to grow at an annual rate of 2.4 percent up until 2023, a very impressive rate even for such a staple food. Indeed, the revenue pasta brings into the world has only continued to dramatically increase every year without fail since the mid-twentieth century. Its popularity cannot be questioned, and many a home eats pasta at least once a week in many countries such as Italy, Turkey and the UK. One primary reason for the growing popularity in pasta, according to the International Pasta Organisation (IPO) is due to a consumer shift in attitudes towards healthy eating and wellness.

“Consumers are rediscovering the modern benefits of traditional pasta,” said Paolo Barilla, President of the IPO. “Pasta is increasingly appreciated and valued around the world as the centre of a delicious meal with good nutrition.

It is also accessible, respectful of the planet, and brings people together joyfully.”

The various varieties of pasta and its availability in many forms, such as organic, gluten-free and whole wheat renditions, enable those who are especially interested in healthy eating to embrace pasta wholeheartedly. Its ease of use also enables those health-conscious of us to create a wide variety of meals out of it, whilst also at a respectable and competitive price.

Whatever the reason may be, pasta will no doubt continue to find its way onto many of our plates and be wholeheartedly embraced as one of the staple foods that brings us the most benefits.

African Swine Fever Conference

Bringing home the bacon may prove more expensive in future than we have been accustomed to - given the African Swine Fever virus is spreading.

The challenges being faced by the Chinese pig producing industry may well be under-estimated and the level of concern was clearly demonstrated when Famsun, jointly with Milling and Grain, hosted an impromptu one-day conference on March 27th, 2019 to being together international experts to review the modus operandi of the ASF virus and the most trusted control and prevention measures.

The one-day conference held in Beijing attracted 160 of China’s largest pig producers from across the country. They wanted to learn more about bio-security and how to contain and/or avoid their farms from infection.

China, the world’s largest pig producing country, is experiencing a rapid decline in pig numbers – it has lost over one million pigs in just over six months. There is speculation that pig meat prices could rise by three-quarters by the end of next year. China consumes almost 30 percent of the world’s meat production.

This will have a major knock-on effect putting pressure on the international trade in pig meats as well and resulting in upward pressure on prices for all livestock products as the shortage of this very important protein source is felt in markets around the world.

The doomsday scenario is in the virus spreading to neighbouring countries in Asia and the risk to other countries if they do not implement preventive and bio-security measures.

What is or can be done? To answer that question ask yourself why would a feed equipment manufacturer and a magazine take it upon themselves to address an animal health issue? In answering this question might provide a way forward in controlling the spread and achieving containment of the disease.

Farmers often look to feed as the carrier of disease onto their farms. That might have some validity, given that feed trucks often visit several farms on a single run. Bio-security not only rests with the farmer but also implicates all people, vehicles and animals ‘entering’ a farm.

Consequently, farmers must take responsibility for their biosecurity and request feed suppliers among others to comply.

In China, feed manufacturers have now turned to their mill providers for support and advice. And, in turn, Famsun requested our help to identify and invite key experts on ASF control to a one-day conference to share knowledge and provide guidance.

Besides looking at the mode of virus spread, the likelihood of a vaccine rescuing the industry, government rules and regulations, a myriad of bio-security measures that farmers can apply and the role of the feed supplier, delegates have much of the information they need to face the challenges ahead.

However, what they do not have is a joined-up approach.

One that can easily access updated stock identification and movements. Without transparent and fully maintained records, halting an outbreak early enough to control it cannot be achieved and many more farms become needlessly infected as a result.

This was clearly pointed out by our columnist Chris Jackson of the British Pig Association who has been involved in bringing under control several disease challenges within his industry - although he has never had a disease outbreak on his farm including work on past Foot and Mouth Disease outbreaks.

As a result, the UK has a robust cattle and pig identification system backed up digitally with immediate recording of all animal movements between farms.

There is much feed manufacturers can do to help farmers in their quest for greater bio-security. We at MAG would contend that this is a universal issue requiring a global industry response.

The technology exists, the software programmes exist and there is willing support from feed manufacturers who support their pig farmer customers.

China’s digital WeChat, that connects almost everyone with a mobile phone in China and takes care of so many payments that cash is being superseded, has the technology to record pig movements. It has a feed industry and a farmer base to support to continue bringing home the bacon.

African Swine Fever Conference #2

March this year saw me back in China following a very successful exhibition in Thailand, at VIV Asia 2019, a global meeting point for our industry.

The reason for the extended tour was to speak at a conference jointly sponsored and organised by Perendale Publishers who produce Milling and Grain magazine, as well as Famsun, probably China’s largest manufacturer of milling equipment. The conference was arranged to address the biggest problem that the Chinese pig industry has ever faced - African Swine Fever.

This initiative, undertaken by the two sponsors, was a very timely intervention to try and help large pig farmers both better understand the disease and to discuss methods that could be adopted to try and reduce the spread and protect their herds from this now almost global problem.

For me, a UK farmer, it was very heartening to see that the feed industry was taking the initiative to help Chinese farmers. This disease has far-reaching consequences affecting all sectors of our industry and the public at large who face a shortage of pig meat with consequential higher prices for the consumer. From a farmer’s perspective, we concentrate on the devastation that it causes us but often do not stop to consider the knock-on effect.

We heard, in the morning of the conference, from eminent Chinese experts talking about the disease and how it spreads, along with the Government’s plans to eradicate the disease, which they admit will be a long-term project. It took 30 years to clear the Iberian Peninsula of the disease, where pig density was a lot lower. Therefore, they understand well the probable time scale needed to bring this disease under control.

The government have put in place measures to encourage farmers to monitor their herds for signs of disease with a compulsory slaughter and compensation plan. In addition, it has also implemented a plan to have disease monitoring and testing at all abattoirs with severe penalties if they do not comply. This 18 | May 2019 - Milling and Grain

very positive step will benefit consumers as they will have more confidence in the safety of their meat.

At farm level, the percentage of mortality and the compulsory slaughter leads to the problem of safe and effective methods of carcass disposal. The devastation to the Chinese industry is almost too terrible to contemplate with somewhere in the region of five percent of the world’s pig population already lost and the spread continuing with the most likely cause of the spread being associated with humans when you consider the distances that the disease has leapt to infect new premises.

Milling and Grain took a leading role in this conference initiative to help the industry by bringing myself and two other speakers from the UK to address over 160 delegates.

First from the UK to speak was Dr Lawrence Brown, a veterinary surgeon and specialist in animal sciences from the Department of International Trade. He started by giving an overview of the cause of the spread--the one good thing being that it is not an airborne virus.

Because this is now a global problem, along with other research laboratories the UK is also helping to look for an effective method for control and they are developing a vaccine.

Unfortunately for the industry, this is still many years from becoming a commercial proposition.

Another major problem facing control measures is that animals can be infected and viremic for many days before showing clinical signs of infection and rapid death. Therefore, the best option for control will be a vaccine.

Next to speak was Dr Mike Button, also a veterinary surgeon who has a long experience of implementing bio security systems for intensive livestock production globally.

He outlined the necessity for correct disinfection using the correct product that will actively destroy this particular virus, with an emphasis on cleanliness and limiting access. In fact, bio-

As currently there is no cure for this disease prevention is the only answer. This was the theme of my paper, for which I based on my own experiences keeping our farm free from the disastrous outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease that we suffered in the UK in 2000. That devastating outbreak was spread across the UK by animal and people movements.

When outbreaks occurred, exclusion zones were set up and manned by police and because of the scale they were helped by the army. With animals in contact zones slaughtered and burned on site eventually, without using vaccines, the disease was eliminated.

The effect that this had on the farming population cannot be underestimated and I am not talking solely about financial losses, but also the psychological effects on farmers seeing all their animals slaughtered.

There was also the problem for farmers who did not succumb to the disease of not being able to move animals to slaughter.

For the pig industry, in particular, this created terrible animal welfare issues with production continuing and no outlet for market-ready livestock.

Our industry simply had to find a better way of protecting itself without resorting to vaccination which, at least for Foot and Mouth Disease, is available.

Therefore, working with our government in the UK, our industry took on board the lessons learned and developed an animal welfare code along with a rigorous recording system for all animal movements.

This proved very effective when in 2017, when we suffered another outbreak which was contained to a small area of our country by quick diagnosis and instant implementation of exclusion zones, which were put into effect around farms known to have had contact with infected animals.

From my own experience, strictly enforced bio-security has to be key to prevention and if there is a single lapse a lifetimes work can be undone, so we cannot stress the importance of this enough.

Because we are seeing African Swine Fever in Northern Europe now, we in the UK are well aware of the risks that this could pose even to our island state. To help avoid infection our industry has set up a contingency plan, should we ever detect an outbreak based on our experience with Foot and Mouth Disease.

In addition, we are continually educating our farmers about the risks and how diseases can be spread - again bio security and education are key factors in controlling and eliminating disease.

The world that we live in today, with people having little, if any, understanding of the risks from the spread of diseases, the global impact that this has on the food industry means that at farm level we have to be even more vigilant if we are to protect our animals, crops and livelihoods.

Education and training must play a key part in this and the initiative that the sponsors took in arranging this conference in Beijing at short notice has not to be underestimated and should be applauded.

If this format could be rolled out in a different region latter in the year it will be, I am sure, a major help to the industry.

It is important that when problems occur people come together to share their experiences, so that positive messages and methods of control can be developed not only for China but for the rest of the world where African Swine Fever and other diseases are causing major problems for farmers, their families and the wider economies.

An article in The Miller (February 2nd, 1903) reminded me to pay tribute to Robinson & Son as one of the milling pioneers who help transform milling from the use of millstones to the use of rollers.

The firm was originally founded by Thomas Robinson, the grandfather of the members of the firm in 1903. He was a man with strong business instincts and started his business with a sawmill in Water Street, Rochdale, around 1840, at a time when very few wood working tools had been brought out.

His son, John Robinson, inherited his father’s business ability and a strong inventive nature. He paid careful attention to the machines being used his father’s sawmill, studying their points and defects. Very quickly he designed some greatly improved machines for wood working, some of which amounted to new inventions.

When they were put to work and found to be successful, the firm began to manufacture for the market as well as for themselves. This new branch of business increased very rapidly and about 1854 it became absolutely necessary to seek new premises affording more accommodation.

John Robinson was a far-sighted man, with a firm confidence that the business would ultimately become a great success, and he secured as a site for the new works, some land closely adjacent to the railway station in Rochdale.

He then built very extensive premises accommodating a sawmill and fitting shops. After that the business of making wood working machinery never looked back and they started to manufacture of every kind of machinery required in roller milling, building this into the main feature in the history of the firm. Thomas Robinson and Sons became a private limited liability company.

The company depended upon nobody and made both their own tools and machinery. In the layout of the premises, the nearest to the railway was the sawmill and joinery works. Here almost every kind of wood working machine could be seen; doors, windows and all kinds of woodwork being manufactured from the log.

The timber from the log was first sawn on a large double horizontal saw frame, working with two saws carried in two light working frames with a horizontal reciprocating motion.

They were driven at a high speed from a double throw crank, the centres of which were opposite, so that the motion of the one saw balanced the other. The saws cut in both directions at their stroke, so that the feel of the timber was continuous, and the machine was able to turn out a large quantity of excellent quality work.

greatly improved with all the corners rounded off and looking very attractive. A new feed arrangement with two feed rolls had never been seen before. The adjustment gear of the roll proper was a very ingenious affair, and the reviewer insisted that it really had to be seen to be fully appreciated.

Everything about the new machine was movable, any part could be lifted away in a moment and the lubrication system was first class. The roll casings were lined throughout with wood and the Robinson’s roll was regarded as a marvel of accuracy, capacity and finish.

There was also a new whizzer with ingenious spider lifting beaters, unlike anything else seen on the market at the time.

It was a remarkably clean machine and developed its own air current which wiped the wheat clean and dry besides giving just so much frictional action and movement to the wheat as to make it fit for immediate grinding.

The power of thinking

You have been told time and again that you have to stay positive, that having the right attitude will help you succeed; but that is wrong. It can ruin your career, bankrupt your company and even get you killed.

The popular wisdom is that dreaming will take you to your goals. New Age gurus will even tell you that dreaming alone will “make the Universe conspire for your success”. In reality, when a person dreams, he feels like having already achieved his goals. That makes you less dedicated to working towards them. You also miss the opportunity to foresee the problems that may arise.

In reality, you should review every negative possibility. Think of every problem, make a plan to deal with each one, and even make a SHTF plan in case everything fails.

- What would you do if your partner steals from you?

- Maybe have my accounting audited every year.

- What if we have a drought next year?

- We should build some water tanks or even an artificial lake.

- What if prices fall?

That’s what options and grain bins are for.

- What if consumer habits change?

- Perhaps I should invest some profits in a side business or invest in R&D. The objective is achieving resilience. It is not the same as resistance. It doesn’t mean that problems won’t affect you.

It is just that, if they do arise, you will be able to withstand them. Optimists tend to be more successful, because they make large gambles and eventually hit big, but they are more exposed. Pessimists are less successful because of being conservatives, but they actually are right most of the time. Negative thinking allows you to combine both approaches.

As Sun Tzu said, “In ancient times skillful warriors first made themselves invincible, and then watched for vulnerability in their opponents.”

That is still true today. Make your plans foolproof, and then you can move forward confident in your ability to deal with anything life throws.

Of course, I know from experience that people will scoff at you, or avoid you completely, for being a negative thinker. However, you can present it as something else. Tell them you are managing by facts. This is a tool widely used in Lean Six Sigma.

So, to present your ideas to your partners or your boss, try a six stages report: - What could go wrong? You will have to prepare a report for every possible scenario - Do we have a plan for it? Sometimes there is a plan, like using an emergency fund, but it is just not very clever - How likely it is that it happens? Give some rough “order of magnitude” probability based on available data and your hunches.

You don’t want to waste time looking for a precise value - How much would it cost if it happens? Consider doing some probability numbers to give the expected value of this failure - What would be the new backup plan? Describe in detail what you think should be done, before, during and after the problem.

- How much would it cost to implement the backup plan?

Consider lost income during implementation.

Now that you have everything laid out, it is only a matter of numbers: expected losses versus cost of implementation.

Sometimes numbers will tell you to take the punches. Other times you will need a complex project. But at least you would have thought of everything.

So, next time you face a drought or an infestation, you will know what to do. You are welcome.

Cooperation between TUSAF and IAOM in the Eurasia Region

T

urkey’s Industrialists Federation (TUSAF) and the International Association of Operative Millers (IAOM) have agreed for a cooperation to work together in the Eurasia District.

The Eurasian Region, in which TUSAF will assume the Regional Director of IAOM, consists of 31 countries with a total population of more than two billion and an economic size of 5.1 trillion dollars and realised 30 percent of the world’s total wheat production of 737 million tons in 2018.

As it is known; Russian Federation, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Turkey, which are the rising stars in the Eurasian region and the boundaries of the world’s grain milling industry the world wheat and flour trade in recent years has acquired an important place for itself.

In addition, a large part of the 12 million tonnes of world flour trade takes place in this region and Turkey is the biggest flour exporter in the world market the last six years.

The IAOM Eurasia Workshop was the first step of this cooperation with the theme of “Meet Millers Professionals” announced in Antalya before TUSAF 15th International Congress and Exhibition, which was held on April 25-28th.

THE RAGHAVAN REPORT New financial year & newer opportunities

In many parts of the world, April is the beginning of a new financial year and usually we can see optimistic outlook and predictions are being made about the growth and potential of the economy in general and also for each sector. Let me also attempt to make some predictions not by crystal-ball gazing but by observing the trends and developments in the global food industry in the recent past and through my interactions with the diverse industry stakeholders.

One of the most important “P”s - Public perception

From a politician trying to win votes to a private company trying to establish its brands or defend itself at the times of crises, the growing importance of public perception cannot be ignored.

I always used to say to my clients and/or audiences whenever I speak at any conferences that it is no longer a question of “cost of doing business” but “cost of losing business” that needs to be taken into consideration while formulating business strategies and my friends working in the agrochemical industry would be nodding their heads in total agreement.

With the explosion of social media, lies and half-truths travel faster and easier than facts and evidence. Today’s consumer is more confused and time-starved than ever before. Hence everyone including those that want to push their messages commercial, philosophical or political - had to make use of these channels and cut through the clutter and clamour.

I again reiterate that public perception is of utmost importance for ensuring innovative technologies to be commercialised and accepted by the people. It would be suicidal for any company or organisation to avoid or run away from the media and public in this era of hyperconnected world.

Protein obsession and health

I observed in the recent few years, a growing interest across the world particularly on protein and plant proteins are getting way

more attention in the traditional meat-dominant Western world.

This trend is likely to continue, at least as a complementing factor to the existing high level of animal protein consumption in these markets.

Burgers made completely of plant proteins may be a total surprise to these consumers. But in the developing world, particularly in South Asia, plant proteins have already been in the cuisines of people since several millennia. So, I would foresee another latent trend in terms of increased consumption of plant protein as “ingredients”.

For example, Canada’s progressive pulse industry had long been forging ahead with the idea of mixing pulses, flour and its fractions with traditional carbohydrate-dominant foods such as bread, pasta etc. Even research studies were pursued in India to tap into the huge multi-billion-dollar snacks segments making snacking a healthy and guilt-free option for the consumers who care about their health conditions such as obesity or diabetes.

This trend is subtle and subcutaneous, but it is going to gain momentum as even developing countries have these kinds of demographic and public health challenges such as malnutrition and obesity at the same time. A growing body of evidence clearly demonstrates the impact of non-communicable diseases in the economies of both developed and developing world and the governments and private sector are finding their own ways and means to respond to the trend through policies and products.

It would be very interesting to see how these two aspects go together particularly when a third party which is keen to sabotage both the above-mentioned players try to enter the minds of the people through different means including social media. We have already started to see this happening since last few decades in the case of genetically modified crops, advanced breeding techniques, new innovations such as golden rice etc.

I will attempt to bring forth more profound trends that I see having the potential to make far greater impacts in the global agri-food sector.

The R&D gateway from Çorum to the world

A

lapala, one of the world’s leading miller manufacturers and exporters, has been awarded the “R&D Centre Certificate” by the Turkish Ministry of Industry and Technology. With the new R&D Center, Alapala will expand its investments on innovative solutions for the agriculture and food industry.

With over 600 turnkey projects completed around the world and 65 years of experience, Alapala Makina has its own ‘R&D Centre’ with the certificate recently awarded by the Turkish Ministry of Industry and Technology.

In its new R&D Centre’, the company will focus on the development of new milling machinery and plans to enhance and expand to further contribute to the Turkish economy in machinery exports.

Speaking about this development, CEO of Alapala Makina, Görkem Alapala underlined that the Alapala concentrated heavily on innovation since its foundation and emphasised that the R&D Centre Certificate awarded by the Turkish Ministry of Industry and Technology is of great importance in this regard.

“Our goal as a company is to introduce innovative ideas for our customers. For this reason, we emphasise great importance onto our R&D activities and investments in this field. We allocate an average of two percent of our annual turnover to R&D activities. We carry out R&D activities on a 250 square-metre area and 19 people work in the centre.

“Currently, we continue our works for our product range and new projects. In this period of industry and robotic technologies progressing very rapidly in the world, we are trying to do our best so that our company and our country does not fall behind in these areas. We will focus more on our efforts in this area with the incentives to be provided through this certificate awarded by the Ministry,” Alapala said.

“In 2015, we founded Alapala R&D Engineering in Çorum Teknokent and continued our R&D activities through this company. From the first day of our foundation, we are using our own resources and we are continuously developing projects in cooperation with universities and institutions, one example being TÜBİTAK for the last three years.

“We export the technology developed by our team of 19 people to the world. We perform about 20 turnkey projects per year. We have received 29 patents and 15 design registrations. We are accelerating our operations in this field every day. In 2018, we applied for four patents and five design registrations. In 2019, our target is to apply for three patents and nine design registrations,” Alapala noted.

Alapala also mentioned about their targets to create smart factories by making the equipment used in the milling and machinery process compatible with the Industry 4.0.

“In the last three years, we have completed one KOSGEB and one TÜBİTAK Industrial R&D project. The R&D facility project with a budget of approximately three million TL is ongoing since 2017. Our project application to the Ministry of Economy is under evaluation.

We have also participated in the INOSUIT program to build the SYSTEMSEL and CORPORATE infrastructure of Innovation as part of the University-Industry cooperation.

This and such initiatives and investments will put Alapala and Turkey forward in terms of industry in the world,” Alapala highlighted.

Connected to Bühler Insights, it captures processing parameters, dates, times, and product batches in real-time, making it a powerful tool in food safety auditing.

Tubex Pro is a smart, self-optimising, scale system for the food industry that provides a constant flow of real-time production data, which can be visualised using Bühler Insights. It enables improvements in efficiency and yield and provides a new level of transparency and traceability along the value chain. The data can also be seamlessly integrated into Bühler’s Yield Management System.

Yield Management System is a mobile yield monitoring system that provides remote oversight of production

Mill E3 is an innovative mill concept that brings all these solutions together. Mill E3 improves efficiency in three key areas: space, time and energy. The new mill can be built in less time, in a smaller building, at the same or lower

costs, and consumes significantly less energy per tonne of processed wheat than a conventional mill. Increased automation along with sensors feeding data to the Bühler Insights platform enable the miller to maintain yield and guarantee end product quality. The first Mill E3 is being developed for Whitworth Bros, a UK leading wheat miller in the UK. “As global challenges become more acute, there is an increasing need for sustainable solutions along the whole food value chain. A global ISO standard takes shape for equipment

he International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) ISO/TC-293, the technical committee working on standards that were originally proposed by China for feed machinery, convened a Plenary Meeting in Winterthur, Switzerland on January 11-12th, 2019 and made significant steps towards an achievable and useable set of standards for this industry sector.

Thirty members of ISO/TC-293 from seven countries met for the second plenary meeting in Winterthur, Switzerland to discuss feed machinery standards on terminology, safety and hygiene.

The meeting included representatives from China, Denmark, Germany, Iran, Switzerland, Turkey (via video) and the United States. Over the two days of meetings substantive discussions

were held regarding the project on ‘Terminology’ as well as the proposed next steps for the projects on ‘Hygiene’ and ‘Safety.’

The initial proposal was for nine different standards for ‘Equipment Terminology’, 30 for ‘Safety’ and 17 for ‘Hygiene’. Delegates were successful in convincing the committee to adopt a strategy of just one standard in each of the three main areas. And any new work items proposed for the three areas must be balloted and approved before working groups can be formed.

And even although there was not complete harmony for the need for standards, there was concern expressed about the possible negative impact they may have on the industry remains among the participants. All parties worked together to hammer out more practical solutions than what was originally proposed.

ogether with YPTECH Co, Ltd, Delacon is now also breaking grounds in Japan. Since September, the Tokyo home-based YPTECH Co, Ltd is the exclusive distributor for Delacon’s phytogenic feed additives. The natural solutions are now available in the company’s portfolio for ruminant, poultry, and swine.

In Japan, it is still allowed to use antibiotic-growth promoters (AGPs) in the feed. However, livestock producers increasingly shift to production without AGPs due to consumer demands. So, the Japanese feed industry is always looking for new products to support animal health and performance. Phytogenic feed additives will be one of the solutions.

“That’s why we were looking for a strong distributor that drives natural solutions forward. With YPTECH Co, Ltd we found a partner that exceeds our requirements. A team of 20 members does excellent work with feed millers, and gained tremendous market insights since 1984,” says

For the ‘Terminology’ project, it was decided to include all terms under one standard instead of the originally proposed eight different standards.

The committee also agreed that once the terminology standard reaches the “draft international standard” stage in the ISO process, the terms can be referenced to adopt a strategy of only one standard each for both the ‘Safety’ and ‘Hygiene’ projects rather than the multiple standards approach originally proposed. New work item proposals for each of the three areas must be balloted and approved before working groups can be formed.

The session ended with all parties agreeing to a planned next Plenary Meeting in April 2020 also in Switzerland. If all goes well, all three proposals will be approved and working groups will have begun their work by the time of the third plenary meeting.

TRAINING Maintaining product quality during grain storage is always the goal of grain elevator managers. Factors impacting the grain’s quality include the product’s shipping and handling, milling equipment or machinery used in processing as well as the harvest conditions during a given year.

Training focused on maintaining quality in grain elevators Educating managers on the best practices for maintaining quality grain is the goal of the offering from the Kansas State University (K-State) IGP Institute and the Grain Elevator and Processing Society (GEAPS). The GEAPS/K-State Grain Elevator Managers course will be held May 7-10th, 2019 in Manhattan, Kansas.

This course benefits professionals who work in operations, procurement, management or other grain handling roles. Topics discussed in this course include grain quality management, fumigation, aeration, and human resources among other things.

“The GEAPS/K-State Continuing Education program is enhancing its joint offerings by developing a Grain Elevator Managers course,” says Carlos Campabadal, IGP Institute Outreach Specialist for Feed Manufacturing and Grain Quality Management.

he world is going through a difficult period. Tensions between countries and tougher market conditions, as well as various trade wars are widening the already existing problems. Under these conditions, high input costs in Turkey too are forcing manufacturers and Turkey in recent years, however, a mobility on the foreign exchange market also created a great deal of pressure for Turkish manufacturers.

2018 - 2019 value mobility in currency

At the beginning of 2018, foreign currencies started the year with the rate of around US $3.70, EUR €4.50 TL and GBP £5.00 TL. The Turkish Lira has decreased in some value, due to various external factors and problems.

Exchange rates followed a bumpy course up until May, followed by the inflation figures announced in the first week of May, followed by $4.20 and €5.00 respectively. On August 13th 2018 rates reached $7.2169 and the EUR and TL 8.2245.

End of the year exchange rates closed with $5.2920 and €6.0550. Following Turkey’s general election on March 31st, 2019, rates were approximately $5.8018 and €6.5575.

On April 10th, 2019 a “New Economy Package” was announced by the Turkish government which included requirements concerning the reform of tourism, education, industry, judiciary, finance and agriculture. It has been announced that it will take place during the 4.5-year term currently being run.

The agricultural sector, which is one of the critical sectors within Turkey, took its place among the issues to be solved in this project at first. In order to reduce the effect of high food prices on the economy due to inflation, production planning will be made according to individual regions and the National Unity Project in Agriculture will be announced later this month.

In order to keep the prices under control, a company with the name Sera AŞ, which are part of the Turkish Government, will be established. In 2019, 2000 hectares of technological greenhouses will be built under the roof of this company.

Red meat will be developed via ovine livestock to balance prices. With the support to be given to farmers, the 47 million small ruminants currently farmed will be increased to 100 million within four years.

industry. Recently, the discovery of the first wheat cultivation and, quite possibly, the very beginning of farming, was discovered in Göbeklitepe, dating back 12,000 years. This news only highlights Turkey’s dedication to milling.

In the last six years, Turkey has been the world leader in flour exports to over a third of the world market and it looks this will continue throughout 2019. The location of the country, in terms of its proximity to raw materials and markets and the opportunities in logistics, helps Turkey with this significant increase.

Meanwhile, The Turkish Flour Industrialists’ Federation (TUSAF) which is the federation of the seven regions in Turkey, scored another success. With an agreement between the Federation and the International Association of Operative Millers (IAOM), Turkey has taken the Eurasia region administration and is the Eurasian Governing Council and the Executive Director, which regulates 32 countries in the region.

Turkish Flour Industrialists’ Federation (TUSAF) and the International Association of Operative Millers (IAOM) were held together at the Eurasian Workshop on April 24-25th in Antalya and after the workshop, between April 25-28th, 2019, TUSAF held the 15th International Congress and Exhibition’s in the same place.

The organisation brought together sector stakeholders and proved to be a very successful event, much like it is every year.

This year also included Professor Dr Gordon Smith and his team of Cereal Science and Industry Department Heads at Kansas State University.

Turkey Flour Industrialists Federation in the new era

TUSAF recently held an election on April 4th, 2019. The members who were voting decided to continue with Eren Günhan Ulusoy as a Chairman. The Board of Directors consists of 13 members. Seven people in the Board of Directors were elected again and the board will have six new members.

After the election, Eren Günhan Ulusoy shared some informations on a private TV channel about the industry. He stated that Turkey’s wheat production in recent years was an impressive 20 million tonnes. However, as a result of the increase in inputs due to foreign exchange after the new season, the farmers have turned to planting products other than wheat, and therefore, there is a decrease in wheat plantation areas. At the beginning of the 2000s, there was a wheat plantation area of 9.5 ​​ million hectares, and today, this area has fallen to 7.4 million hectares.

The Flourmill and Sector Machinery Manufacturers Association (DESMÜD), has rolled up its sleeves to train its specialised technical personnel. The association management, which has been working on the subject for a long time, began to clarify the details of the training.

The association determined the training programmes of teachers who would train in the milling department as part of the training protocol with the Ministry of National Education. Teachers working in the field of Machine Technology in Vocational and Technical Anatolian High Schools in Gaziantep, Konya and Çorum will be given training in Ankara Sincan Erkunt Vocational Training Center and ASOSEM. Training on Milling Machines is taking place on July 1-5th, 2019, Grinding Technology will be held on September 2-6th, 2019.

Awards to the Doyans from the Grain and Pulses Processing Technologies, Storage and Analysis Systems Association - TABADER

TABADER also organised the second Awards to the Doyans in the Flourmilling Sector on March 20th, 2019 at WOW Hotel in Istanbul.

Great interest was shown in the event where Tabader gave awards to people and institutions that contributed to the development and appreciation of the sector with their valuable work and innovative approaches.

In addition to the award ceremony, participants had the opportunity to participate in training sessions for three days in a wide scope such as flourmilling sector economy, new products, R & D, energy management in factories, diagrams, licensed warehousing, quality control, enrichment, ration preparation, flourmill machines, automation, machine maintenance and repair.

At the end of the training, participants were given certificates.

The event which was named as “TABADER - IFP 2019 International Flour, Feed, Pulses Summit” hosted domestic and foreign experts who shared their experiences and knowledge about the sector.

The large conditioning facilities look at all stages of the process to optimise every single step, and being able to monitor the incoming product, the final outcome, and the product waste, are therefore important parameters for today’s processing plants”, says Anders Thorsted. The need for higher precision during conditioning and processing is therefore more essential now than ever.

This is backed up by Kevin Kidwell, who has also been following the changes closely. What’s your risk?

Mycotoxins are a global threat to commodities. Currently, over four hundred mycotoxins have been isolated, with still more being identified. Their toxicity represents a serious threat to human and animal health and, because they remain chemically stable at high temperatures, the threat can be passed along the entire supply chain.

The SGS Mycotoxin Monitoring Programme in Europe has served as a good risk mitigation tool for many customers. Using our early warnings, many companies avoid major issues related to contamination. Even before harvesting the corn crop in 2018, SGS highlighted potential issues in Russia and other select countries based on weather monitoring and preharvest testing.

It is now confirmed that for the 2018 corn crop, Russia is the country at greatest risk for contamination and is seeing multiple mycotoxin issues, including aflatoxins, ochratoxins, and fumonisins.

Several regions across the US and Canada are also battling with mycotoxin contamination, especially in corn, wheat, and barley.

Due to a wet fall and delayed harvest, vomitoxin (DON) has been widespread across the country, with Minnesota and Pennsylvania reporting DON contamination in barley.

DON was also detected in the wheat harvest across Wisconsin, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois, Maryland, Delaware, North Carolina, Virginia, and Ohio, while DON has been present in corn across Nebraska, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, New York, Indiana, Ohio, Vermont, Iowa, Pennsylvania, and Ontario, Canada.

Various mycotoxin issues have been plaguing the corn crop aside from DON. Aflatoxin has become an issue in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Georgia, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, and North Carolina. Fumonisins were detected in the corn crop in Texas, Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New York and Nebraska. Zearalenone was reported in Iowa, South Dakota, Vermont, Nebraska, Illinois, and Ohio, while T-2/HT-2 toxin has been found in the Canada corn crop in Ontario.

Mycotoxins pose a significant risk to crop quality across the world, making the protection of crops and commodities against 62 | May 2019 - Milling and Grain

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by fungi which contaminate crops and feed products. The formation of mycotoxins is dependent on weather and environmental conditions, making them difficult to control. In addition, mycotoxins can become concentrated in some processing and production of products from these crops and feeds.

Some of the most common mycotoxins your commodities may be at risk for include: Aflatoxins – This class of mycotoxins includes aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, G2 and M1. Aflatoxins are commonly induced by drought or heat stress and are produced by Aspergillus species.

Livestock are very sensitive to aflatoxins, and high concentrations in feeds can lead to liver damage and death.

Deoxynivalenol (DON)/Vomitoxins – This mycotoxin is produced by various Fusarium species and may become prevalent in crops due to wet humid weather at flowering. DON increases when moisture content is high during grain storage and commonly results in feed refusal and immunosuppression. In extreme cases vomiting may occur.

Fumonisins – This category includes B1, B2, and B3 fumonisins, which are commonly found in contaminated corn.

Drought stress followed by warm wet weather significantly increases the risk for the presence of fumonisins. These mycotoxins are notorious for deteriorating coordination in horses, pulmonary edema in pigs, reduced feed intake and gain in cattle, and esophageal cancer in humans.

Ochratoxins – including strains A, B, and C, these contaminants are often produced within grains during commodity storage. Ochratoxins can cause kidney failure in swine, hinder fetal development in utero, and harm the immune system.

Ochratoxin A is most prevalent and is a carcinogen.

T-2 toxins – These contaminants are produced by various Fusarium species. These mycotoxins commonly infect grains such as barley, wheat, millet, and mixed feeds. T-2 toxins drastically harm animal feed intake, gastrointestinal health, and reproductive success. t– This estrogenic metabolite results in corn ear and stalk rots and can also contaminate weathered soybeans, hay, silage,

and grains such as wheat, barley, oats, and sorghum. Both high moisture and late harvest can increase zearalenone concentrations in crops. Due to its high oestrogen content, zearalenone has been noted for contributing to reproductive complications in livestock.

What’s your remedy?

Prevention is the only practical option for businesses trying to keep their supply chains clear of mycotoxins because, once contaminated cargo is mixed with non-contaminated cargo, it cannot be separated.

One infected kernel of corn in one kilogramme of grain can produce

toxin levels which exceed permitted concentrations. A small amount of contaminated corn is sufficient to turn an entire Panamax shipment into an unsafe and unusable commodity.

Since the consequences of mycotoxin poisoning can be fatal, manufacturers must employ effective early warning systems to protect their customers and their reputations. Commodities cannot be visually assessed to appropriately determine the level of contamination from mycotoxins. To ensure that mycotoxins are not present, commodities need to be sampled and tested for contamination.

The most prevalent technologies for mycotoxin testing include enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) and liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrophotometry (LC/ MSMS). ELISAs are a popular detection tool that calculate the amount of a particular substance within biological samples.

ELISAs target a diverse number of analytes and are cost effective in handling high sample traffic. Output from an ELISA provides an overall amount of a mycotoxin class present in a sample.

Other technologies provide greater differentiation of contaminants within a mycotoxin class. Best-in-class instrumentation, such as LC/MSMS, provides very accurate identification of variant mycotoxins. SGS is committed to investing in high-quality instrumentation.

Mycotoxin Monitoring Programme

SGS developed its Mycotoxin Monitoring Programme as an effective early-warning and monitoring program to replace the costly and error-prone system of laboratory analysis and strict threshold-based regulations. Begun in 2014, the program focuses primarily on corn and wheat crops, covering ten southeast European countries – Ukraine, Russia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Croatia, Romania, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.

The program has been proven highly effective at detecting early notifications of mycotoxins, such as aflatoxin (B1 and total), ochratoxin, deoxynivalenol, zearalenone, fumonisins, and HT2/T-2.

The monitoring programme is aligned with the requirements of several certification schemes, including Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP+), the Feed Chain Alliance Standard (OVOCOM), Good Trading Practice (Coceral GTP), Agricultural Industries Confederation AIC, European Feed and Food Ingredient Safety Certification (EFISC), and Quality Scheme (QS).

Sampling is administered using Grain and Feed Trade Association (GAFTA) rules. 15-20 percent of tests are carried out while the crops are still standing, giving clients advanced knowledge of crop quality. The rest of the samples are then taken when grain is in storage or at the first collection point, and all sampling is completed within four months of the harvest.

All samples are then analysed by SGS’s accredited laboratories in Ukraine, Russia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, and Serbia, using LC/MSMS and high liquid performance chromatography (HPLC).

The data produced by SGS is targeted and specific and can help identify potential problem areas at an early stage. Food manufacturers can use this data to identify potential supply 64 | May 2019 - Milling and Grain

chain problems, giving them valuable time to make alternative arrangements. In this way, they can protect their brand from potential contamination and/or supply chain interruptions.

The new B11 standard for Registered Laboratories has been developed in response to several cases of inaccurate laboratory results for animal feed analysis. In an effort to reduce confusion

n the 1980s, researchers from Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, private companies and universities jointly developed a technique for producing germinated brown rice enriched with GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid) and conducted a series of animal tests and human clinical experiments.

As a result, it was clarified that when germinated brown rice containing natural GABA was used for a long period of time, it was effective in suppressing the increase of blood pressure, and that it had an alleviation effect on menopausal syndromes, presenile psychiatric disorder, and psychiatric stress, etc. Functionality and safety of germinated brown rice were confirmed by animal studies and clinical studies.

At first, the GABA enrichment process imitated the germination process of seed rice and the product was named “germinated brown rice”. However, this method required a sterilisation and a drying step after the germination treatment because of the longer germination time, the fermentation odor produced, and the propagation of bacteria.

Furthermore, the method of processing of germinated brown rice lost the original taste of rice, making it difficult for consumers to accept it as a food product. Additionally, observed were problems such as loss of nutritional components along with the wastewater during germinating, energy consumption during drying, longer production time, and deterioration of taste quality.

Based on the above problems, Satake developed a new-type functional rice manufacturing technology and its equipment, which combined functionality and taste. The principle is to break down the dormant aspect of the germ by combined action of water and temperature under low water content, and to “kick start” the vital activity to germinate, thereby promoting the biochemical reaction.

The result was that a variety of amino acids were isolated while GABA was produced, and in particular, the content of essential amino acids increased by more than double. Rice enriched in both functional and natural nutrients was ready.

In the manufacturing process of GABA rice, first, rice paddy of about 15 percent moisture content (W.B.) is humidified to about 19 percent. When humidified, constant temperatures are applied to activate the GADs and promote the formation of GABA. Next, the paddy is dried to 15 percent to retain the resulting GABA. The sequence of steps is completed in the same equipment. When enriched from paddy, the enrichment and drying are completed in about 10 hours. The configuration of this process is as follows.

During the process of humidification, there is a large structural difference between the germ and endosperm. The germ is mainly composed of fibres and has a well water-absorbing structure. On the other hand, the endosperm is composed of relatively dense reconstituted starch and has a structure of poor water absorption.

When humidified, there is a large moisture difference between the germ and the endosperm. At the same time, GABA is a water-soluble, and the generated GABA immediately dissolves in water, and moves into the endosperm, based on the potential energy and concentration of water due to the moisture difference. The formation and transfer of the GABA takes place simultaneously and successively prior to drying.

Drying

Before the biochemical reaction is completed, drying is carried out to drop the paddy moisture to around 15 percent. At this time, the change in moisture, the biochemical reaction, and the transfer of components are all stopped.

Rice GABA enriched by the wet-air method retains 70-80 percent of the GABA in the endosperm even after the rice milling. This milled rice has very similar taste, if not better, compared to regular white rice, yet contains more than 10 times the GABA. Furthermore, the GABA enrichment equipment is capable of enriching not only rice, but also beans and grains such as barley and wheat. For example, the GABA content after enrichment of the soybean with Satake’s equipment is approximately four times or more than that of the original rice. Intake of sufficient amounts of GABA to have a pharmacological effect may be easily achieved through a diet combining GABA enriched rice and beans.

eing one of the largest countries in East Africa, with a capacity of more than 1.75 million tonnes, Kenya is one of the leading corn-milling countries in Sub-Sahara. Kenya is also renowned for its wheat production. Kenya own a great deal of wheat stocks and produce a significant amount of wheat flour.

With slightly more than 100 mills in Kenya the production capacity follows Pareto's principle in that the largest 19 mills, around 20 percent of all mill plants are producing around 80-to-90 percent of the total wheat milled.

Kenya’s rapidly increasing population also means that their production rates for maize flour, wheat flour and rice have also

had to drastically increase to meet in-line with their consumption demands. Nairobi, Kisumu and Mombasa are considered the hubs of milling within Kenya and are the places that have become most subject to industrialisation.

Milling & Grain were very pleased to attend the 29th Annual IAOM MEA (International Association of Operative Millers, Middle East Africa) from 23-24th October 2018. On the evening of the 25th, we were even more pleased to have been invited by Mr Gorkem Alapala, Vice-Chairman of the Board for Alapala, to visit one of their completed mills.

Alapala have a very rich and diverse history in machinery which all began in 1954, when Mr Mehmet Alapala began to Alapala’s Similago II roller mill

F produce the first wooden plansifter. By 1967, the plant began to utilise new-founded technologies and create more machinery for both flour and feed mills. Popularity soon proved how good Alapala’s products were, as they made their first international exports in 1981, to Yugoslavia.

Soon, Alapala were delivering turnkey projects around the world. In 1989 they had already completed construction of flour plants in both Italy and Jordan. By 1998, they were producing plants with capacities of over 500 tonnes of product a day.

Alapala offices had been established around the world and the company were yet still only continuing to grow.

In recent years, Alapala’s innovative products have won many awards, such as Milling & Grain’s coveted GRAPAS Innovations Awards in 2015 for their Similago II Roller Mill, as well as the Reddot Product Design Prize and Good Design prizes in the US. They are in the top 1,000 companies in Turkey for gross export numbers and currently export to over 100 countries worldwide.

Now, Alapala have a state-of-the-art production facility that is only further attesting to their success. Built in 2017, the factory spans 50,000-square metre and even features robotic automation.

of the new Capwell Industries mill for wheat flour. Alapala managed to build Capwell Industries’ mill from foundation to complete mill in just under two years and the high-quality and attention to detail resonate throughout the building. The mill has the capacity to produce over 250-tonnes-per-day of flour and Project manager Mr Jagjit Singh was clearly very impressed with Alapala’s build quality and machine performance.

Mr Singh explained “Alapala had ensured that Capwell Industries received only the best in innovative technology, ensuring each and every machine in the mill would provide them with a great end product of premium quality.”

the Quadro Plansifter – DPAK and the Arion Purifier.” Discussing with the Mill Manager it was clear that his view was that these three innovations were incredibly impressive, and he emphasised that Alapala had supplied only the best technological innovations for Capwell Industries.

My interest having now been ignited in these three innovations, as we moved through the mill I quizzed the staff further to find out more about what made these machines so special to Capwell Industries.

Similago II

We first stopped on the roller floor, one of Alapala’s many innovative solutions present within the Capwell Industries mill was the Similago II roller mill, this is their premium roller mill that won Milling & Grain’s GRAPAS Innovations Awards in 2015 for its innovative technological revolutions.

The Similago II, is made of the highest-quality carbon steel, has the ability to perform high-capacity grinding continuously without pause, without any risk of wear or decrease in performance. The machine is also unique in that it can run completely silently, due to the special profiled transmission belt, tensioning pulleys and drive pulleys which drive the rolls differentially.

The machine is equipped with high technology electronic systems; the feed rate is automatically controlled by using a capacitance sensor in the feed box, which sends a signal via PLC to regulate the speed of feed rolls. There is a special mechanism which gives flexibility to the grinding rolls against oversized subjects, whereas pneumatic roll engagement/ disangement system is used to monitor the positioning of grinding rolls.

The machine also has control systems like rear roller speed monitoring etc. in order to ensure also the operational safety.

Each of the internal parts of the Similago II is made of stainless steel, in order to prevent any accumulation of condensation or raw materials and a clean environment is doubly assured as no greasing is required.

Roll changes can be carried out quickly and efficiently in just under 20 minutes, ensuring that these models have the minimum amount of down time out of all of Alapala’s models. Maintenance is also easy, with no special tools required and no lifting devices needed for the roll sets, as they can easily be dismounted from the machine. And having recently visited the Alapala production plant in Turkey, I conducted my own crude roller change test and 74 | May 2019 - Milling and Grain

a team of two Alapala staff were able to change a roll in three minutes 44 seconds.

The inspection glass for the Similago II consists of polycarbonate, which can also be easily removed for easy cleaning, ensuring that this roller mill complies with all sanitary standards.

Quadro Plansifter – DPAK

Moving through the plant, another one of Alapala’s latest solutions present in the Capwell Industries mill was the Quadro Plansifter – DPAK. This innovative solution can be used for wheat, rye, oats, barley, corn and a variety of other food products.

The head miller continued “The Quadro Plansifter DPAK contains several superimposed sieves which are square in shape, in order to guarantee optimal sifting action and precise separation of the raw materials.” The oscillating drive system of plansifter is quite strong for heavy duty working conditions.

I noted that each sieve provided with the QUADRO Plansifter – DPAK is made of wood and coated with Formica.

Each plansifter also contains its own inlet and outlet boards, as well as control spouts and connection sleeves made of a special fabric that is permeable to the air. The insulation panels are internally-coated to prevent any condensation issues and a special Alapala-design pressure-clamping device ensures that the access doors close firmly and tightly.

Mr Singh explained that much like Alapala’s Similago II, the Quadro Plansifter – DPAK emphasises easy maintenance. The special structure of the sifters ensures that insects cannot enter the machinery and take shelter, whilst the telero frames make installation and dismantling of the Quad Plansifter, quick and hassle-free.

Looking inside I noted up to 28 sifters can be fitted to the sifting cabin, and it was explained that it is possible to increase the sifting capacity by up to 22 percent, should the user incorporate ‘G’-type sifter boxes.

Mr Gorkem Alapala further detailed that “Alapala have ensured to cater to every customer need and have also made sure that the QUADRO Plansifter can also be easily transported, by breaking up simply into three pieces for efficient shipping and handling.”

F be used in both flour and semolina mills. The sieves housed inside the Arion Purifier separate the raw materials with great efficiency and intricacy.”

The Head Miller further explained “Regulating valves help control the aerodynamic air canal, which creates the ideal vacuum to flow the products through the purifier. This method holds the bran and other undesirable material, which are then removed and transferred to the discharge and collecting boxes below.”

I noted that the suction/exhaust chamber in the Arion purifier actually contains not one, but two aerodynamically designed chambers, both with independent regulation valves positioned above the sieves. This I was told creates an optimal air flow which always ensures peak performance of the purifier and sieves. The exhaust is also fitted with an adjustable butterfly valve.

Vibration mountings and vibratory motors are used to ensure that the Arion Purifier is especially efficient, and these fittings are also maintenance-free and very energy efficient.

Mr Gorkem Alapala also emphasised to me the importance of sanitation and hygiene with their Arion Purifier and that the system complied with all the prescribed hygiene standards, I was told each and every part of the machine consisting only of the best-quality materials to ensure easy and effective sanitation.

I noted that, compared to Alapala’s previous models and other purifiers, the Arion Purifier is clearly of a high-quality. This rendition of Alapala’s purifier has an increased capacity, compared to prior models, as well as a new adjustable-sifting speed.

It can also work in silence, requires minimal maintenance, and boasts easy cleaning due to its innovative hygienic design.

The sieves can easily be cleaned with brushes and are also easy to replace.

by Cimbria n the grain processing industry, and particularly in grain drying, there is always the potential risk that a spark can occur, and it is therefore necessary to implement solutions that will minimise the risk of serious damage to the equipment.

Cimbria now takes the current technology into the next level by introducing CIM-Safe, the most efficient spark detecting technology on the market. The CIM-Safe registers the glow from sparks and embers via a high-sensitivity infrared detection system and immediately sends an alarm to the operator and shuts down the dryer, thus preventing a fire from developing.

The grain processing market developed in the direction of fewer, but bigger, processing plants in which efficiency and reliability are key. In terms of maintaining productivity and profitability, it has been even more important now than ever to focus on safety equipment that ensures the safe operation of plants and detects sparks and embers as quickly as possible.

At the same time, legislative requirements such as OSHA in North America and ATEX in Europe have forced the industry – both suppliers of equipment and processing companies – to reconsider and enhance grain processing plant safety. In order to comply with legislation and safeguard processing equipment, Cimbria has recently introduced the new infrared spark detection system called CIM-Safe.

CIM-Safe is now a new safety device implemented primarily on our dryers, because the system has

several advantages. It has a faster reaction, compared to cable solution, and easy installation with highly sensitive infrared sensors.

Furthermore, adjustments are not necessary, i.e. the system is always engaged, regardless of whether grain is being processed.

Control unit: The spark detector is connected to a central control unit that monitors the equipment and detects sparks or fire in time, such that it is possible to take action before any further damage occurs

Spark Detector: The highly sensitive detector sensing infrared light is able to detect even through dense phase material and is fitted in areas where no daylight or other light is present.

An air cleaning nozzle will be supplied when the sensor is placed in a humid environment.

Cim-Safe can be further equipped with an automatic high-pressure water extinguishing system to provide an effective water barrier for extinguishing sparks when installed in confined space

The CIM-Safe system can easily be integrated into the equipment and connected to the local control panel, which activates an acoustic alarm and flashes on detection. For further safety, another alarm will trigger by other major events.

The later alarm could be configured by the user and used for automatic cut-out. CIM-Safe can also be equipped with an automatic water-based high-pressure system, which acts as an effective water barrier to extinguish sparks in the event closed spaces.

In other words, in all areas in which there is a potential risk of fire or explosion, CIM-Safe can be the solution for minimising expensive damage to equipment and (perhaps even more important) subsequent losses due to production shutdown.

CIM-Safe – Proving its worth in real life emergencies In June 2018, Cimbria’s After-Sales and Service Department, together with one of Europe’s largest agribusiness companies, delivered the first of several CIMSafe projects. In recent years, the client have had a fire in three of their dryers, despite the fact that they had installed CW-4 cables for fire detection in them. Cimbria, therefore, drew up a proposal for a safety upgrade of 24 of their dryers at different locations.

Cimbria won the order with its CIM-Safe solution, because of thorough documented testing and because already on several occasions it hindered fires by detecting the glow from embers before a potential fire could develop, resulting in limited damage and downtime kept to a minimum.

Remote alarm: The control panel activates an acoustic alarm and flashing warning light upon detection. For added protection, a second alarm is activated upon extended detection.

This second alarm can be user-adjusted and is used for automated process shutdown. For added safety, a remote alarm to e.g. a mobile phone can be added

CIM-Safe is compatible with most control units as long as they have a fire safety system. The solution is quick to install with just around 12 hours on a standard plant.

Maintenance costs are low on the system and it is easy for the user to operate. Delivery contract was signed on May 1st, 2018. The CIM-Safe solutions (on the 24 plants) were all installed between May 15th – June 15th, i.e. in just 30 days, which is in itself, an impressive feat!

On June 19th there was a joint introduction and training of CIM-Safe held for the operators to make sure that everyone was familiar with its use. Just four months after installation, this company reported that two of the CIM-Safe systems have already proved their worth. CIM-safe prevented two fires for them! From detection of the spark until the plant was up and running again, the downtime was only 20 minutes! www.cimbria.com

What led to the postharvest registration of sulfuryl fluoride?

Morgan: Sulfuryl fluoride (SF) has been used since 1961 as the active ingredient in Vikane® gas fumigant primarily to protect properties from drywood termites. While Vikane was the leading solution for structural fumigation, methyl bromide (MB) was the mainstay in postharvest uses.

However, in 1987, the Montreal Protocol, a United Nations (UN) treaty, required that MB be phased-out by 2015 to protect the Earth’s stratospheric ozone layer. An alternative was needed, and in 1995 at industry request, Dow AgroSciences began investment to obtain a postharvest label for SF.

F Braun: ProFume was registered in 2004 in the US. Today, ProFume is registered in more than 20 countries including Australia, Germany, Canada, and the UK. Codex listing for international trade followed in 2006. The registration of ProFume has been recognised with environmental awards by both the United Nations and the US Environmental Protection Agency.

When did Douglas Products enter the picture?

Morgan: In 2015, Douglas Products acquired Vikane and ProFume from The Dow Chemical Company. The acquisition included the SF manufacturing plant in Pittsburgh, California, which is operated by employees of The Dow Chemical Company.

The acquisition of ProFume and Vikane made Douglas Products a leader in fumigation as the company holds federal registrations for both SF and aluminum phosphide.

You’ve been in development since 2004?

Braun: ProFume has become recognised as a fumigation standard for postharvest needs. Industry adoption resulted due to SF’s demonstrated superior efficacy and other industry identified desirable qualities. SF has been proven effective on all life stages of a broad spectrum of stored product pests. It has low sorption and rapid desorption and does not affect commodity quality, texture, flavours or processing characteristics.

It has no impact on fumigation sites because SF is nonflammable and does not pose a corrosion risk even for sensitive equipment. And in comparison, with MB, SF allows for faster turnaround because it penetrates grain more rapidly to reach target insects, then aerates rapidly.

Morgan: The ProFume label also was written to span a range

of structures used to store, transport and process raw agricultural commodities and processed foods. So, you can fumigate silos, bins, trailers, shipping containers, stacked fumigation chambers, and stationary railcars and trucks.

The label also covers mills, food production facilities, and warehouses. Commodities on the label include corn, wheat, barley, millet, rye, rice, oats, flour, cocoa beans, coffee, peanuts, dried fruits, tree nuts and more.

What’s the role of fumigation today?

Braun: Stored grain falls under the Food Safety and Modernisation Act legislation. Those regulations require a written plan to identify threats and have protocols in place to mitigate the identified threats and protect foods. Fumigation is an effective treatment to eliminate pests from facilities and from incoming commodities, or to react quickly in the event of a pest outbreak.

Morgan: Fumigation is a component of an integrated pest management (IPM) program. IPM can mean different things to different people, but an elevator or mill needs to have a customised pest management program based on the facility itself, the grain being stored and even the geographic location.

What might surprise an elevator or mill manager about ProFume® gas fumigant?

Morgan: ProFume utilises the proprietary Fumiguide® program developed to serve the global market. It provides calculations in English standard or metric, and it is available in multiple languages. This program is important for a couple of reasons.

First is during the planning stage; the software determines the specific fumigant dose required by calculating the target pest,

Second, the software can be used to fully document the entire fumigation process and kill. Monitoring equipment manufacturers have improved their equipment to remote monitoring of fumigations in real time. Because conditions always vary, no two fumigations are identical, even for the same facility. Monitoring helps ensure a kill by allowing adjustments to be made as needed.

Braun: The mode of action of SF also is important. SF controls insects by disrupting glycolysis and the citric acid cycle, which deprives insects of energy they need for survival. This mode-ofaction is different from phosphine products, and as a result SF will control phosphine-resistant insects.

Managing resistance is critical because there are only two workhorse fumigants left, SF and phosphine. Resistance has been documented for phosphine among insects such as the lesser grain borer and the red flour beetle. If you suspect you may have insects that are resistant to phosphine, Kansas State University has developed diagnostic screening tests.

Are there important use restrictions or precautions?

Braun: ProFume is a federally Restricted-Use pesticide so applicators must have a fumigation license and meet the stewardship requirements of Douglas Products. We’ve taken the position as a company to work with professionally certified fumigation companies who use ProFume regularly and properly.

What would you tell a mill or elevator manager that might be unfamiliar with fumigation?

Morgan: From a management perspective I have seen three attributes of successful mills and food plants. First, hire a good pest management company, work collaboratively with them and stick with them. Second, look at the big picture in terms of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach.

Your IPM plan should include preventive measures like inspecting incoming goods and rejecting any that are infected.

Third, include fumigation in your pest management program as needed and focus on efficacy and safety.

Braun: Start by understanding your facility, clearly identifying the pests that you face and establish treatment action thresholds.

Fumigation at the beginning of a pest invasion always prevents a bigger issue later. There is no residual protection with fumigation, so zero-out that initial pest infestation and then use topical grain protectants like food grade diatomaceous earth for residual protection.

With grain being stored longer you can use ProFume® gas fumigant for ground piles. We have done fieldwork that shows you can use multiple injection points for the fumigant and then rely on normal thermal movement to get gas circulation from one end to the other. Temperature always wants to reach equilibrium, so when the sun is shining that produces warmer air that wants to move from the outside into the grain pile, while the colder air inside will want to move to the outside.

What steps are there to ensure results with an SF fumigation?

Morgan: Good circulation and monitoring are important to ensure positive results. What some fumigators do is to place monitoring lines at different levels in the stack and when gas levels are the same at the top and bottom, they also should be the same in the middle of the stack. Also watch for any high moisture areas inside the grain. ProFume penetrates grain well but wet grain can slow penetration. Finally, the seal is critical in any fumigation. The gas must be held to get a kill.

Any advice to a grain manager about the use of SF?

Braun: The fast penetration of SF can give you a faster turnaround. I was doing a seminar and one of the participants got a call that a train was going to arrive there the next day. With ProFume you can increase the amount of gas used and turn the job around quicker, even within a 24- to 30-hour period from fumigant introduction through aeration. At the same time our calculator will go out one full week — 168 hours, so, if you are not in any hurry you can seal and hold that bin or bunker that long and use less gas.

What is the future of SF?

Braun: Fumigants are highly regulated, so proper use is essential to maintain them as a pest management tool. NEW TECHNOLOGY ENABLES OPERATORS TO GO ASSET-LIGHT

aving the ability to respond rapidly with a high-performance unloading system that requires no infrastructure can prove to be an ideal solution for the grain industry; Peter Göransson, Sales Manager and Senior Advisor for Siwertell, explains how.

Trade routes for the world’s bulk commodities, especially in the maritime sector, benefit from a concept known as just-in-time delivery. The central idea is that if bulk cargoes can be delivered in a continuous stream, the vessels that carry them can maintain economical speeds to deliver the goods on time.

Just-in-time is not as straightforward as fast delivery, and involves certain engineering and logistical challenges, but it can offer huge economic advantages in terms of efficiency savings. Ensuring this for grain deliveries is particularly testing, as the seasonal nature of many crops creates peaks and troughs in delivery schedules, therefore anything that can lessen the impact of these on the logistics chain will deliver efficiency benefits.

Smoothing material flows The new Siwertell port-mobile unloader works well to smooth bulk material flows in port and allows operators to be responsive exactly when required. It serves the same 60,000 dwt ship size as pneumatic systems, which are widely used in grain unloading operations, but can completely strip away their various inefficiencies.

Pneumatic systems also deliver a fast unloading profile, but at a cost; a cost in terms of elevated fuel consumption and a cost in terms of material degradation. Pneumatics rely on similar technology to vacuum cleaners, but the

companies who designed this technology never had to worry about the integrity or eventual quality of what they suck up; port operators, however, do.

The same forces that propel cargo so quickly through these machines smash, crush, and scrape the cargoes all the way through the process and in the grain handling industry, crushed commodities translate into a loss of profit.

Cutting your losses The steady action of a counter-rotating mechanical screw, combined with a specially designed inlet, submerged in the cargo, means that Siwertell machines can avoid the grain degradation problems presented by high-velocity pneumatic conveying; there are no cargo avalanches; no swirling air currents close to the intake to fling the cargo across a wide area; nor are there crushing forces, as large volumes of cargo collide with the machine’s internal components.

Throughout the unloading process, large volumes of cargo are delivered deliberately and continuously from the screw-type intake to the truck or belt conveyor at the other end. This minimises any cargo degradation and maintains very high levels of handling efficiency, ultimately delivering higher cargo-handling rates and volume capabilities as pneumatic systems.

Operational flexibility and efficiency are also ensured

by Siwertell’s screw-type vertical intake, which offers substantial advances over those of a standard pneumatic system. A Siwertell system can unload a ship’s hold at various angles – from 90-degrees to +/-30 degrees – without compromising its effectiveness.

A Siwertell machine can even unload cargo from the troublesome areas of the hold, underneath hatch coamings and in corners. As well as maintaining continuous

throughput, this maximises the extent of cargo that can be unloaded, further reducing waste compared with a pneumatic which can only unload in a 90-degree vertical plane.

Going asset-light Siwertell’s port-mobile unloader navigates the quayside using a rubber-tyre gantry. In static or rail-mounted unloaders, complex fixed engineering infrastructures are often required to ensure that an unloader is able to navigate to the locations where it needs to be, but as its name suggests, the Siwertell port-mobile unloader is highly mobile. It can be deployed immediately and makes it possible for dry bulk ports to operate without any fixed infrastructure at all.

When it comes to the unloading of docked vessels, its maneuverability allows the port-mobile unloader, not the vessel, to move along the quay during unloading.

For some ports, this can be an enormous advantage and potentially allows more vessels to dock at the quayside.

It is also equipped with a large-volume intermediate surge hopper, which allows discharge operations from a ship to continue even if no trucks are imminently available. An intelligent control system monitors the level of cargo in the hopper and prevents over-filling, as well as controlling the discharge rate to the hopper.

As standard, the unloader features a double-truck loading system, with the possibility to order an optional third loading system. As the loading systems are not interlinked, one, two or all three loading positions can be used independently and simultaneously, delivering the fastest truck loading operation possible.

When the port-mobile unloader has finished discharging the vessel, the system can be moved away from the quayside to clear port thoroughfares, and even stowed when not in use. The port-mobile unloader has another advantage, because of its lightweight construction it does not require any additional structural or reinforcement work on the quayside.

Cargo handling flexibility The port-mobile unloader offers unmatched flexibility in many areas, but it also inherits benefits common to all Siwertell screw-type unloaders. One of these is the flexibility to handle many different types of cargo with a single machine, and without modification.

As such, the port-mobile unloader is not limited in the types of cargo to be handled. Unlike pneumatic systems, which are only suitable for fine grains, Siwertell machines can handle all manner of grains as well as larger soya beans and feedstuffs without damage to the cargo. Even where the finest grains are concerned, the vertical inlet submerged in the cargo and the totallyenclosed conveying line more thoroughly eliminates dust creation than any other solution on the market.

Through-life benefits The port-mobile unloader is extremely efficient to run and uses the latest diesel engine specifications to meet the strict environmental regulations on exhaust and noise emissions.

The robust mechanical attributes of the port-mobile unloader also translate into very low maintenance costs, especially in comparison to the high-intensity demands placed on a pneumatic system’s key components. This is because the continuous low-velocity motion of the counter-rotating screw places little strain on the working components.

Its consistent and steady movement, with almost no fluctuations of acceleration and deceleration, make it possible for Siwertell engineers – and importantly, the port-mobile unloader’s onboard programmable logic controller (PLC) and sensors – to accurately predict when maintenance intervals are likely to be required.

asta, now an indispensable food staple, was not always as popular in Turkey as it currently is. In fact, it was only in 1922 that pasta first began to regularly appear on the plates of the Turkish people, and this was still a relatively uncommon occurrence. 1950 was when pasta truly began to be seen as a more popular food source in Turkey and, since then, it has become one of the most common food sources in the country.

One cannot speak of pasta in Turkey without mentioning Nuh’un Ankara Makarnasi Sanayi ve Ticaret AS, founded by the Eskiyapan brothers, Ahmet Eskiyapan and Kemal Yurtabilir. With their first factory established in 1950 on Ulus Rüzgarli street their popularity soon led to an increased demand and a more specialised and expansive production space was needed.

Decades passed and Nuh’un Ankara Makarnasi only continued to soar to new heights. Their new plant was built in 1956, followed by their production increasing to 30 tonnes-per-day in 1965. Their product range also expanded around this time as the Turkish people expressed their desire to experience more varieties and forms of pasta.

In late 2018 it was recorded that Nuh’un Ankara Makarnasi’s latest and most modernised factory is producing an astounding 16,000 tonnes of durum macaroni and 15,600 tonnes of pasta.

Their own unique brands of pasta are exported worldwide, and they are renowned worldwide for their impressive and innovative products.

Their multiple brands and ranges of pasta, such as Kepekli, Veronelli, Elif Makarna and Classical, all help ensure that the growing population gain sufficient access to only the best and most nutritious foods on the market.

And how do they manage this? A big part of this is their dedicated use of Bühler machinery.

The Bühler solution

Nuh’un Ankara Makarnasi’s manufacturing facility, which is currently the third largest-capacity manufacturing facility in the world, proudly uses exclusively Bühler machinery for their pasta production and cites this as a primary source for their success.

Bühler’s Pasta and Grain Milling business units have worked extensively with Nuh’un Ankara to ensure that their production facilities are equipped with only the best in processing technology, and they have continued this union for decades.

“We have been working together with Bühler since we started our own production,” says Feridun Haboglu, member of the Directorate-General at Nuh’un Ankara. “We have chosen Bühler because of their performance and the quality of their solutions.

In order to ensure premium-quality pasta is produced, their producers use the highest-quality durum wheat from the SouthEast, as well as from Central Anatolia, which they shape through high-pressure and cure in ovens in temperatures of no more than 80°C. As little manual intervention by workers is carried out, to ensure that the final product is as free of contaminants and pure as possible, an aim that Bühler’s innovative milling solutions carry out with ease.

As technology has continued to evolve, Nuh’un Ankara have ensured to always update and use the latest in Bühler innovation.

In 2008, Nuh’un Ankara approached Bühler expressing a desire to further expand their production capabilities, in order to try to increase their share of the market to a solid 40 percent in Turkey.

Bühler quickly set themselves to the task and after much analyses and discussion, the plan was set into motion and the facility began expansion.

Compared with other purifier models, this model increases throughput by up to 20 percent thanks to its wider sieves and minimal space requirements. Two purifiers can also be stacked atop each other, meaning capacity can be doubled and space can be utilised optimally.

An excellent mill ensures high-class semolina. A shortgoods pasta line with a capacity of 6000 kilogrammes-perhour (kg/h), as well as a special line for soup pasta shapes with a production rate of 3600 kilogrammes was produced.

Bühler ensured that these refinements would secure Nuh’un Ankara’s position in the pasta market with their inclusion of the Bühler Polymatik presses, one of their most innovative solutions for the hygienic processing of high-class semolina which can produce up to 3250 kg/h of pasta. The latest dryers were also installed, consisting of a drum and belt drier which reduced the length of the lines by an impressive 50 metres.

An ever-evolving market

Turkey currently has 23 pasta factories spread throughout the country, and they have grown in the past few decades from a country that knew little about pasta, to being the second-biggest pasta exporter in the world, second only to Italy, a true sign of their dedication to this staple food source.

“Italy is more dominated by the premium niche markets, whereas Turkish products are usually considered the more convenient, competitively-priced alternative” says the mill owner.

As I am taken on a tour through his extensive factory, it is strange to hear that Turkish pasta is not promoted more widely throughout the world as a product of refined excellence, as their use of top-grade machinery and the high-quality solutions makes it clear that their pasta deserves to hold an esteemed reputation in the international market.

Nuh’un Ankara’s factory is certainly impressive: in just one day its four production lines are able to grind 1000 tonnes of grain and produce over 650,000 tonnes of semolina thanks to Sortex optical sorter, Antares roller mills and Polaris purifiers. They grind down their durum to an impressive 135-150 microns of semolina. When asked what they do with the by-products and waste, they state that all waste materials are then responsibly sold on to be used as animal feed, so the minimal amount of waste possible is created.

They also sell off their lower-quality flours, which further cements Nuh’un Ankara’s products as only being made with the highest-grade ingredients. The standard they set is remarkably high and has only helped elevate them in the pasta production industry.

Nuh’un Ankara’s market is also only continuing to expand with a production facility now present in Japan, which also exclusively uses only Bühler machinery. The Japanese market, they remark, is an especially interesting one. The Japanese market tends to Antares Roller Mill

In the South, Azerbaijan is 755km from the Islamic Republic of Iran, and 10km West to the Republic of Turkey (Nakhchivan, including the Autonomous Republic) and is adjacent to Armenia in the east, as well as 715km from the Caspian Sea. 50 percent of the land structure is mountainous. The cpountry is 655 metres from sea level. The mountainous region is composed of the Great and the Little Caucasus and the Taurus Mountains.

The largest plain is the Kür-Aras plain.

Azerbaijan has a total land of 86,600 km2. 50 percent of this land consists of arable land. The Caspian Sea, the largest lake in the world, is an impressive 400,000 km2 and at its deepest is 1,025 metres deep.

Cold weather from the north of the Great Caucasus Mountains, hot tropical air currents from the south of the Lesser Caucasus Mountains and the Caspian Sea are the main factors affecting the regular climate of the country.

The southeastern part of the country has a humid subtropical climate and the winters are warm and summers are very hot. The annual rainfall is 1,200-1,400 mm. In the remaining regions the climate is dry and semi-arid. The majority of the agricultural work takes place around the Kür and Aras rivers.

Basic economic ındicators After the economic problems caused by the disintegration of the USSR, an agreement called “Agreement of the Century” was signed on September 20th, 1994 between Azerbaijan State Petrol Company and other big foreign petrol companies for the Azeri, Çırağ, Güneşli Beds in the Azerbaijan-owned section of the Caspian Sea. Having experienced a 60 percent reduction in this period, Azerbaijan has managed to overcome the problems in time due to its specialisation in petrol. The country, which has significant petrol reserves, started to benefit from petrol revenues as of 2005.

The country’s economy has started to recover in the last ten years and it has grown by 9.3 percent in 2009 and has been the country with the highest growth in Gross Domestic Product in the world.

In 2015, it achieved a real growth rate of 1.1 percent. Although the country’s economy shrank by 3.8 percent in 2016, the next year, it started to grow again with a positive effect and increased by 0.07 percent. In 2019, a growth rate of 3.9 percent is projected.

Azerbaijan, which achieved a rapid growth in the period of high petrol prices until the half of 2014, was affected by the decline in oil prices after this year. Due to the devaluations taking place Azerbaijan had to enter into a comprehensive reform; banking, foreign trade, customs and the tax system were restructured.

A large part of Azerbaijan’s economy constitutes a heavy industry. The most important sectors are aluminum, iron and cement. However, these sectors were neglected due to the fact that most of the revenue came from oil.

In 2014, other industrial areas were given importance and investments were made. Housing construction, service sector, transportation, infrastructure and communication activities have gained weight in recent years.

Distribution channels Collaborating with a company based in the country will help to get into market market. This will facilitate entry to the market, as well as less budget for research, promotion and marketing.

Private firms established after independence started to play a more active role in trade.

Agriculture and food The agriculture and food sector is the second most important sector of the country’s economy after oil. 37 percent of the total workforce is employed in this sector. In the south of the country with fertile soils, it is possible to have two arvesting seasons per year.

The main agricultural products produced in Azerbaijan are tobacco, cotton, tea, vegetables, olives and fruit. Although the agricultural sector corresponds to six percent of the total gross domestic product, it is the most important sector in terms of employment.

Almost all of the agricultural sector in Azerbaijan is in the hands of the private sector. State-owned farms from the time of the USSR were abolished. Smaller and private farms were established. The share of these farms in agricultural production was 60 percent in 1995 and recently reached 99 percent.

In the meantime, grain production has doubled compared to the period around 1995 and has now reached two million tonnes

per year. According to official statistics, 2017 was a especially successful year for the agricultural sector. Total agricultural production increased by 4.2 percent, cattle breeding by 2.7 percent and crop production by 6.1 percent.

Compared to the previous year, the increase in 2017 was as follows: Cotton production was 2.4 times increased, sunflower production by 78.1 percent, tobacco leaves 45.4 percent, sugar beet production 22 percent and fruit production by 1.3 percent.

However, the production of green tea leaves decreased by a rather drastic 23.7 percent, the production of cereal products decreased by 5.2 percent and pumpkin production decreased by 5.7 percent during the analysis period.

One of the urgent problems of the agricultural sector in Azerbaijan in 2017 is the low level of productivity as in previous periods. For example, the productivity of cereal crops (29.8 metric per hectare) has fallen further compared to 2016 (30.6 metric per hectare), and on average is two times less products harvested than in other developed countries.

In addition, yield per hectare decreased by 20 percent for tea cultivation, 35 percent for sugar beet production and 10 percent for cotton.

According to official statistics, the production of animal products increased. There was also a 2.2 percent increase in meat production, 0.7 percent in dairy products, 6.7 percent in egg production and 3.5 times in cocoon production.

EVENT ROUND UP Five innovative Dutch farmers present sustainable and circular business models The Netherlands has been a leading country in innovation in agriculture for decades. The export value of agricultural produce is tremendous and Dutch agricultural technology is found everywhere around the world. Yet the times are changing. Climate, environment, animal welfare and public opinion are more than ever before, factors to take into consideration. The next step is finding new ways of sustainable farming methods and taking the sector to a new level.

Initiated by the “Kip van Oranje” innovation platform, five innovative Dutch farmers proved that this is possible. During the Holland Inspiration Congress at VIV Asia in Bangkok, Thailand, they shared their vision and stories with the audience and how they manage to run their business in a different way. Thereby focusing on circularity, sustainability and being future oriented. Full coverage was on poultry, pig and dairy production.

“We are convinced that the Netherlands will keep its position as a leading country in innovation in the livestock sector”, says VIV Global Director Ruwan Berculo. “We have our roots in the Netherlands and we must keep telling and confirm to the world that we truly have innovative technology to offer. For that reason, we invited those five farmers to tell their stories.

Henry Simon attend successful IAOM 2019 Texoma, Central, Wheat State Spring Conference Henry Simon was in attendance at the ’IAOM 2019 Texoma, Central, Wheat State Spring Conference which took place 21-22 February in San Antonio, Texas.

The conference kicked off with the traditional golf tournament, which offered attendees the opportunity to spend valuable time with each other.

The conference brought the leading industry people together, gave them the chance to share individual experience and know-how related to the industry.

Henry Simon commented that the conference was a great opportunity to increase brand awareness and to build good relationships with potential and existing customers at what they consider to be one of the most important events in the North America.

Novus Forum on the new European rules in swine nutrition As a leader in swine nutrition, Novus International, Inc. has hosted a European Swine Nutrition Forum in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, February, 25-27, bringing together valued pig industry’s experts to exchange and discuss insights on the new European rules in swine nutrition and production.

The aim of this event was to discuss and exchange on the current situation of the European swine industry, focusing on swine new EU regulations, and to address how to tackle these new challenges.

Around 60 participants from across Europe attended this forum.

Special invited speakers like Mario Ramírez, Jürgen Zentek, Xandra Benthem de Grave, Paul Bikker, Enric Marco and Sandra Edwards

shared their valuable knowledge and experiences on the impact of new regulations or rules -reduction of antibiotics, zinc oxide ban, regulations on copper levels in feed, and welfare and environmental regulations-, as well as on the challenges and nutritional requirements of hyperprolific sows.

With a clear commitment on sharing scientific expertise, Novus showed the latest research on MINTREX®, bis-chelated organic trace minerals, in sows and piglets. In sows, the conclusions of a two-year field trial conducted in eighty-two Spanish commercial farms that compared three different sources of trace minerals were revealed.

The delegation then visited the Swine Innovation Center (VIC) in Wageningen University & Research. This multi-functional research centre for modern, innovative and sustainable pig husbandry manage researches on the latest developments in animal nutrition, health, housing, welfare and feeding systems.

his year’s GEAPS Exchange was held in the “Big Easy”, New Orleans Louisiana, at the voluminous Ernest N Morial Convention Centre.

The show ran from March 9-12th, 2019.

GEAPS (Grain Elevator and Processing Supply) is an international professional association that supports its members and the industry by serving as The Knowledge Resource for the world of grain handling and processing industry operations.

GEAPS addresses the industry’s critical grain handling, storage and processing operations needs by providing the finest networking, professional development programs, and access to a global marketplace of equipment, services and technology solutions providers. GEAPS’ global network of industry professionals includes more than 2,500 individual members from about 1,050 companies.

GEAPS Exchange 2019 drew 2,836 attendees from 19 countries to New Orleans to see and learn about the latest products and innovations in the grain handling and processing operations industry. The technical conference and exposition included a tradeshow with 407 exhibitors in 290,000 square feet of exhibit space, and over 30 hours of education in a variety of formats.

This year, in true New Orleans style, show attendees were played into the hall by a jazz band. The show was huge by any measure with almost too much to see, but here are some special highlights: Grain entrapment

A highlight of the show was a live grain entrapment and rescue demonstration. These demonstrations were scheduled to occur several times a day and were always well attended.

OSHA/Oklahoma State University Fire Service brought along their custom grain engulfment and confined space rescue simulator. With CCTV cameras watching, a team of rescuers demonstrated the techniques and specialised equipment used to free a volunteer trapped up to the waist in grain (fortunately, they used a dummy).

But, even working in ideal conditions, the rescue team members needed to be regularly relieved after working a ten-minute shift, which is a dramatic demonstration of just how strenuous it is working up to the knees in grain.

The live demos were a big hit at the show.

A sensor mounted in key areas of flowing grain integrates with existing PLC systems on site. The unit can then prevent accidently mixing of grain types by alerting users if the crop type does not match what is intended.

Firefly spark detection www.firefly.se Fires and dust explosions are a constant hazard in silos, bins, conveyers and in flour and feed mills, and other environments that generate dust. The Firefly MGD is a spark detection system that identifies dangerous particles (ignition sources) in process flows.

Once a particle is detected, it is within milliseconds extinguished before it can create a fire or dust explosion. In this proactive system, a single control unit controls detection and extinguishing functions.

Central Life Sciences: Grain protection www.bugfreegrains.com Grain loss through insect damage is a perennial problem, and it is estimated that US agriculture industry loses upwards of US $2.5 billion a year as a result of insect infestations. Traditionally the problem is attacked using a multi-faceted system of aeration, grain coolers, fumigation, and controlled atmospheres, but now Central Life Sciences has developed a unique approach employing insect growth regulators, or IGRs. These come in a variety of formulations, but basically Insect Growth Regulators disrupt the insect life cycle by interrupting larval development. Safe to use with stored grain, feeds and seeds, IGRs are basically a form of birth control for bugs, which never develop beyond the larval stage.

It can be applied directly to the grain stream as a surface spray, or through the use of foggers. IGRs can be used in concert with the company’s adulticide products to stop larval development and kill adult insects.

This technology is very new. It was developed around 2013 and brought to market in 2015 by RDI Technologies.

RDI’s patented technology measures deflection, displacement, movement and vibration not visible to the human eye. Using video camera technology in conjunction with custom software and processing algorithms to extract meaningful data. This technology turns every pixel in the camera’s view into a sensor capable of measuring vibration or motion with high levels of accuracy.

Motion Amplification is a tool that allows us to visualise movement that is imperceptible to the naked eye. You can visualise the motion together with measuring and quantifying any structural assets that a camera can see. Motion Amplification is a proprietary video-processing algorithm that detects subtle motion then amplifies that motion to a level visible with the naked eye which enhances the understanding of the components and interrelationships creating the motion.

This technology allows us to identify issues and bring some understanding to problems. This is a great tool for those chronic problems or for verifying new installations. When the process is completed, videos become the report. Clients are able to see for themselves the movement in their systems.

GSI, GrainViz: Virtual reality comes to GEAPS Exchange www.grainsystems.com GSI came out swinging at the recent GEAPS Exchange conference, with a number of innovative new products. One of the most remarkable was the company’s cutting edge GrainViz product.

Drawing upon technology developed in the medical imaging industry, GSI has developed a system that allows users to look through the walls of a silo/bin and see the moisture content of the grain.

GrainViz creates a 3D moisture map, similar to an MRI or CT scan, allowing operators to see the moisture content of each individual bushel of grain in a steel storage bin. While many bins are already fitted with cables holding temperature sensors, grain is an excellent insulator, so a region of grain just a few centimetres away from a sensor might exhibit a very different temperature.

By contrast, GrainViz can “see” through the entire grain mass. It uses low frequency radio waves supplied by transducers fitted around the inside of the bin. By using an iPad or tablet, or by donning a headset that resembles a pair of virtual reality goggles, users can visualise the inside of the bin and actually see areas of excessive moisture inside the grain mass, with the colour display graphically displaying regions of different temperature.

GrainViz has other benefits: • Optimises fan operation based on grain condition and local weather, saving energy and preventing the hidden cost of over-drying. This makes it easier to maintain grain and optimal weight based on the operator’s designed moisture target • Offers quick and accurate inventory reporting, eliminating the need for personnel to enter a bin to take a physical measurement. One of the biggest problems are small adjustability, rusted hinges and springs that fail. These gates are limited lifetime warranty and feature polymer fibre resin hinges which are non-corrosive. Randy Linak, LA36EX linear actuator Randy introduced Linak’s LA36EX linear actuator certified for hazardous environments.

The LA36EX is designed to be used in many applications including sliding gates, diverters and valves.

Linak is a world-wide manufacturer of linear actuators with four manufacturing facilities all over the world. Headquartered in Denmark with 2,200 employees world-wide, 350 in their Louisville, Kentucky facility, and 30 sales offices.

The LA36 is a compact unit that comes in various options, speeds, loads and positioning/ control options.

With its new UL, Class 2 Div 1 approval it’s certified for dusty areas. This is a variation of the company’s standard LA36, introduced in 2015, which has half a million units installed worldwide. Linak also offers engineering support with tailor-made solutions. www.linak.com

Davie Lapp, Agriflo Receive David introduced a smartphone app called Agriflo Receive, an app that allows you to receive grain as a receiving portal. The app features drop down menus and allows you to enter data into it.

Agriflo Receive is part of an FSMA/food safety process and enhances traceability.

Kent Grange, Thompson Software, Routine Maintenance Inspections Automation by Simon This is a custom software for maintenance. The software had to be user-friendly, customisable, paperless and it had to be application and web-based. The application can run on a smartphone, Ipad/tablet or laptop in the field without an internet connection. They have a number of templates for a wide variety of grain applications and the software is extremely flexible for the number of users and custom configurable for each customer’s unique needs. Jens Rittmeyer, Nord Gear Corporation, Direct Drive Yetta of Nord Gear Corporation spoke about the advantages of direct drive equipment, which has a higher efficiency than belt drive systems. Direct drive systems do not require belts and guards, saves space, is compact and produces less noise and with no belts is much safer.

He introduced a new product, their new bucket elevator drive specially designed for the grain industry. The new design has a new housing for the gearbox with cooling ribs, which moves the airflow of the ventilator which is mounted on the swing base on the front of the electric motor.

By doing this, users can achieve excellent thermal ratings. There’s no need for additional cooling. This is also suitable for belt conveyers. www.nord.com

Chuck Kunisch, Michigan Agricultural Commodities, Fan Silencer Chuck, a facility manager from MAC spoke about some clever techniques employed for silencing noisy fans at MAC’s Brown City facility.

Here there are many ground stacks and lots of continuously running high-speed axial fans.

The high-speed fans are extremely loud, which created a noise nuisance for nearby neighbours who complained repeatedly. In an attempt to reduce the noise, a giant earth berm was built around the facility, but despite this the decibel level at the property line remained in the red zone.

The standard solution in these situations is to fit the fans with commercially available silencers.

These work, but the problem is the high cost of purchase and installation. MAC’s solution was to muffle the sound of the 24-inch fans by fitting them with 90 degree dual wall pipe with a four foot “silencer” to direct the sound upwards.

As a result, the sound level has been dramatically lowered using this simple, low-cost solution. www.michag.com

Mitchell Murray, MAC, Tarp Puller Mitchell, the MAC Neway GO Branch Manager’s innovation involved an easier way to pull tarps over grain piles. The old way was to recruit all eight employees and recruit every able-bodied person waiting in line at the grain elevator.

This involved a lot man of hours with people up to their knees pulling with all their might. The solution was use a pile conveyer and weld a bracket at the top to add a pulley. They have two more vehicles pulling on the ends of the trap. Then it’s a matter of getting everyone on the radios to communicate. People still have to guide the tarp but the rig does all the hard work pulling. It saves a lot of man-hours, especially if you’re fighting a wind. www.michag.com

Eric Meyer, Mustang Equipment LLC, Trap Turner Eric spoke about the huge savings resulting from a reduction in employee injuries. As many in the industry can testify, opening grain trailer hopper gates can be a hazardous procedure, which can lead to injuries ranging from shoulder and back strain to hernia injuries.

The solution was to create a tool that possessed the following qualities: no torque transferred to the operator, non-impacting/ quiet operation, lightweight and ergonomic to reduce workplace injuries. The solution was the “Trap Turner”, a hydraulically powered tool that is the industry’s only handheld opener that prevents torque from transferring back to the operator. www.mustang-equipment.com

Greg Wurst C-TEC AG, Foamjection Greg spoke about soil stabilisation through foam injection and showed some dramatic slides of tilting silos showing the effects of soil subsidence. This often happens through water drainage or through improper compaction of soils.

The new solution is deep foam injection.

Working with a Geotech inspection lets operators know exactly where and how deep to place the steer pipe. A two-part hydrophobic foam is then injected into problem areas in the ground. As it expands, the foam fills the underground voids and, by adjusting pressure, can actually jack the structure back upright.

The result is a stronger foundation and the foam is environmentally friendly. In a 2010 case study the foam was used to stabilise the soil and correct the settlement of a 150,000-bushel bin, saving the client hundreds of thousands of dollars. www.ctecag.com

Jeff Decker, Decker Consulting & Investigations, Inc., Sloped Roof Retrieval System Jeff showed off a new piece of equipment designed for grain entrapment rescues. It is a lifting device designed to fit to the sloping roof of a silo and has two anchor points on it.

In simple terms, the device is a three-legged tower where the base locks on to a grain bin.

A third legs allows adjustment from horizontal to 35 degrees—without the need for additional guying off as it adjusts and clamps on to the vertical ribs on the bin.

The legs telescope and use a linear screw encapsulated into the third back leg so that once a victim and/or rescuer has been retrieved from the bin the rescuer can get off and the third leg can be extended using the linear screw and lean it over the eave of the bin so the victim can be lowered to the ground without having to remove them from the system.

Steve Hansen, Extron, Directional Flow Grain Spreader Steve introduced his patent pending Directional Flow Grain Spreader. The device employs a “levelling band” which can be adjusted from outside the bin using a cordless drill.

The levelling band allows users to adjust the flow of grain into the bin to ensure the bin is evenly filled with grain. Once the grain bin is full, users can adjust the levelling band to put a “hump” on the grain to maximise capacity. www.extrongrain.com

by Rebecca Sherratt, Features Editor, Milling and Grain n March 13-15th in Bangkok, Thailand, the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC) played host to VIV Asia, the 2019 rendition of the biannual exhibition and trade show that brings members of the food and feed industry in their masses from all over the world.

The exhibition was a glorious affair, with hall after hall brimming with companies that specialised in every aspect of the food and feed production industry for poultry, livestock, swine and more. Over 45,000 visitors were confirmed over the three-day span of the event, and dozens of conferences were also held for industry members to attend.

VIV reported a seven percent increase in visits from those outside of Bangkok this year, proving that the event is only becoming more and more international and gaining more of a reputation as one of the best-serving events for the sector. Overseas visitors came from over 120 countries, the top ten visiting markets being reported as China, India, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, the Republic of Korea, Taiwan and Pakistan.

Compared to the 2017 rendition of the event, a remarkable 1,245 exhibitors were confirmed (an 18% increase) and they covered an extra 30 percent of the floorspace at BITEC. In my time exploring VIV Asia I discovered a variety of innovations for the food and feed industries that will no doubt become integral for the future of human and animal food production.

Mr Bowes spoke in more details about Sukup’s various solutions at the Build my Feedmill Conference on March 13th, to a very attentive audience of feed mill industry members.

Sahapaphop Sahapahpop are a local business based in Thailand, founded in 2013, that specialise in the spare parts users may need for their food machinery systems, such as oxygen sensors, thermocouples, air filters, sealing rings, engines, gas engine management systems, spark plugs and much more.

Zheng Chang Zheng Chang’s stand was dominated by their incredible MZLH range pellet mill, which can effectively use byproduct wood to assist in the production of pelleted feeds.

The capacity in the MZLH range has increased by 15 percent, compared with previous models, and also boasts the ability to produce feed pellets between 6-12mm in size with engine outputs of between 90-280kW. Their smallest model, the MZLH 420, has a production rate of up to 1.5 tonnes per hour, whilst their most heavyduty model, the MZLH 858 can produce up to four tonnes of pelleted goods per hour, an amazing amount to behold.

Production has also been increased by a remarkable 15 percent, through higher gear transmission rates for boosted efficiency, a larger transmission torque and larger roller friction.

Also on show by Zheng Chang was their SPLG Automatic Microelement Batching Scale, to solve the problem of troublesome weighing, batching and feedingensuring each process can easily be integrated into your factory’s working process line.

This machine has a stainless-steel self-cleaning U-type scraper, corrosion resistance and preventative measures towards cross contamination and residue to ensure the machinery remains easy to use and free from debris.

Enhalor Founded in 2000 and based in Beijing, China, Enhalor focus on the intricacies of animal nutrition and develop premixes and yeast cultures for animals. Enhalor have a variety of laboratories dedicated to animal technology, such as their Monogastric Animal Nutrition Laboratory, Ruminant Animal Nutrition Laboratory, Micro-ecology Animal Nutrition Laboratory and Lean Production Laboratory.

They had some of their premixes and solutions on show in larger-than-life scientific test tubes and their emphasis was clearly on the scientific, as their staff were eager to explain the intriguing science behind their products and what makes their solutions so unique for the industry.

Matador Chinese machinery company Matador were also showcasing their latest pellet mill, the M-Type, at VIV Asia. Seven varieties of the M-Type Pellet Mill are available from Matador, each one different to suit the user’s ideal needs and requirements. Capacities are available up to 40 tonnes-per-hour, and pellet production can be easily customised, for pellets to be created between the sizes of 1.8-12mm.

Each part is easily interchangeable for upgrading, so users never need to fully swap out their machine for a new one at massive expense, and each part is made of corrosion-resistant and rust-resistant material. The inner die ca come in sizes between 350-762mm.

Bühler Bühler’s stand advertised a great variety of their solutions for feed, such as the PolyTherm Preconditionera variety of preconditioner that Bühler have available in six sizes, ranging from 100-1,600 litres capacity. Another solution offered was the PolyTwin, a twin-shaft extruder that can be created and adjusted according to the user’s specifications. The twin-shaft technology ensures that users get the best quality extruded feeds available for a smart price.

The company also had their AHHC/AHHD Pellet Mill out for show on their booth, which gathered a great deal of attention for its various advantages and innovative features.

The AHHC/AHHD Pellet Mill from Bühler is able to handle conditioning temperatures over 95°C, to ensure the eradication of any harmful pathogens and microorganisms, as well we also enhancing the pellet quality. The large clean-out door also ensures clean out is quick and easy, and reduced residue has been implemented through a novel design of the mixing tools.

The inlet of the pellet mill has heating pads, and minimal space is needed for the machine, thanks to Bühler’s advanced pellet mill design. The user can also select their ideal die speeds, due to the refined power transmission engineering.

Optional functions can also be added to the machine, such as automatic lubrication, roll gap adjustment, a hotsil pad and fully-automatic control.

Bernd große Holthaus, CEO of Ge-Pro

Bernd große Holthaus joined Ge-Pro in 1992 and has been dedicated to the animal meal industry for over 27 years. Ge-Pro’s various solutions for poultry meal, protein concentrates and feather meal have faithfully served the agriculture industry for many years, establishing their position as one of the largest producers of poultry meal in Europe.

What drove your own, unique passion, for the animal ingredients industry? How did you come to be involved in this industry?

I am the son of a family that has been active in agriculture and animal production for many generations. I have chosen the profession of the farmer myself because it is my affair to grow up with the diversity of nature and the environment and to develop it further.

So, I have come into this branch of the recovery of high-quality by-products, which are used today with versatility in the chain of sustainable food production.

What do you believe will be a big issue for the industry in the next five years, and what can we do to combat and resolve this issue?

A major problem is and will remain to be to convince the human and the consumer at the same time that the production of meat and other foods is the best and most sustainable way forward in Europe.

Only together, in a united Europe, can we face the problems and cope with them.

Another big problem will be the bureaucracy of politics and administration in Europe. Here it has to be successful not to inflate but to dismantle those. The protection of the climate and the environment is also the highest priority for our industry.

Your company has a very rich history in animal ingredients and nutrition, and you clearly also hold a great deal of passion for this sector.

How would you recommend young people get involved in this rewarding, and in some ways not very well advertised, industry?

We have been working in this industry since 1965 and have continuously developed ourselves.

We have also further developed in the field of qualitative improvement of proteins and fats and further developed in the field of reduction of energy utilisation and better treatment of wastewater and residues.

Transforming the meaningful and sustainable recovery of by-products from food production into high-quality proteins and fats is the best advertisement for our business. We have no problems with junior staff, and we are happy about the lively interest in our company.

How much of your research is aimed at improving the health of livestock? How is this achieved?

Much of our investment goes into the continuous development of our products and production processes. A close and trusting cooperation and our customers and suppliers leads to ever higher quality products. To confirm this, we work very closely with universities and institutes.

What improvements do you think we will see in the upcoming years, that will help improve the feed industry- whether they be an alternative source of feed, or a new scientific breakthrough that could give feed a host of new benefits and refinements?

We already produce safe and sustainable products today. The non-use of these products in the food cycle would mean an irresponsible waste of resources. Ever more gentle manufacturing processes by, for example, air and spray drying, a better and more selective use and use of slaughter by-products result in better conditions of use in food production, but also in humanitarian use.

How important is the agriculture industry, in order for us to meet the protein needs for a growing global population?

Consumers need to be more involved with nature and available resources. There has to be a balance between the use of nature’s products, man and climate and environmental protection. Only when all this is sustainably coordinated, are we able to meet the growing demand.

Are your company working on any big project at the moment, that you think consumers would love to hear about?

Yes, we are constantly working to improve our products. This is the only way we have been able to offer more than 30 products from the original four products on the market today.

Further developments are being made in the direction of alternative proteins and hypoallergenic products, which further contribute to the health of the animals.

Finalist announced for Alltech Young Scientist competition

T

he global regional finalists have been selected for the 2019 Alltech Young Scientist (AYS) competition, the world’s largest agriscience competition for university students. Graduate students from colleges and universities around the world whose studies focus on agriculture and science will compete at the highest level for a chance to win US$10,000 and gain access to innovative scientists from around the world. Now in its 14th year, the competition has received entrants from a total of 120 universities and 40 countries.

Anouschka Middelkoop from Wageningen University in the Netherlands has just been selected as one of these finalists, with her project entitled ‘Lactational feed intake level of the sow and creep feed presentation strategy affect piglet performance’.

Bing Liu selected as finalist for Alltech Young Scientist competition

ing Liu from Jiangnan University in China has been selected as one of the finalists for the Alltech Young Scientist competition. Each student selected as a finalist will present their innovative research to a panel of international judges on May 19-21st in Kentucky, US.

Bing Liu’s presentation is entitled ‘Oxidative stability and quality attributes of muscle from laying hens fed organic trace minerals as co-factors of anti-oxidant enzymes’.

Agricultural economist joins IGP Institute

W

ith more than 25 years of industry experience in international commodities trading and marketing supply chains, Guy H Allen has been hired as the senior agricultural economist for the IGP Institute. Mr Allen is set to start his position at the IGP Institute on March 25th, 2019.

“Guy brings a wealth of knowledge and an understanding of a number of different global markets,” says Gordon Smith, IGP Institute Director and Head of the Grain Science and Industry Department. “He also has an extensive history of teaching and is the perfect fit for this position.”

In this role, Mr Allen will lead the IGP Institute grain marketing and risk management curriculum. Along with teaching on-site and on location courses, Mr Allen will serve as an outreach specialist where he will host teams and engage with IGP Institute stakeholders.
