Dear participants of Batumi 14, International Forum of EYP Georgia, I’m sad to say that we live in troubled times. Despite decades of peace in Western Europe, the explosion of violence on our continent is now close enough for us to feel the heat of conflict. Too young to remember the Yugoslav wars of the nineties, for many of us, this is the first time that it comes so close to home. To me, who has grown up in two Western European countries, and who now lives in a third, is it that close? More than two thousand kilometres separate me from Eastern Ukraine, but the world is getting smaller. Of course one state may be neighbour to another, but Europe has neighbours, too – Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine are neighbours of Europe as a whole, and the success and struggles of those countries is of enormous importance to the European Union – and vice versa. Let’s not pretend, for a second, that Batumi 14 will be the place to untangle the knots of history, politics and conflict which riddle Eastern European states. But it is a chance to take a look at them and realise, in another way, that the world is getting smaller. The most striking effect that EYP has
had on my political awareness has been it getting to know people from faraway places, finding a connection to the other end of Europe and bringing their lives closer to mine. What better place, then, than Georgia, to better understand the Eastern Partnership between the EU, EU countries and eastern European partner countries, and create our own?
Sophie Hall President
Dear Potential Officials, It is our great pleasure to invite you to Batumi’14 – 5th International Forum of EYP Georgia. The Forum will gather about 150 participants from all over Europe to discuss current European affairs under the theme of ‘’Eastern Partnership Countries and their integration with the European Union”. There is actually a reason why we have chosen Batumi as the host city for an International Forum. Apart from being one of the most gorgeous seaside cities in the entire world, Batumi has always been known for its multiculturalism and diversity. It is a city where people with different ethnicity, race, religion and cultural beliefs have always been able to find a common language. Frankly, at the end of the day, is not that what EYP is all about? The Organising Team is working very hard to make Batumi’14 one of the most unforgettable events in EYP Georgia’s history. Creating a session of this importance is a big responsibility for us to take as the expectations have been incredibly high from the early beginning. We are doing our best to make a session worthy enough not to just be another international forum but to let it leave its own mark with its uniqueness and originality. We have strong hope that these five days will be an incredible opportunity for all of you to challenge yourselves, to meet new friends and to help create something special. We are looking for a group of individuals that will trust us and who we will be able to trust as well. We need motivated young minds who will sacrifice their time and energy to collaborate with us on making these five days unforgettable for the delegates. On this note, we wish you the best of luck and we look forward to meeting you in Batumi – The City of Friendship.
