Seafood Mecca THE Central Hotel in Lakes Entrance, a local landmark renown for some of the best seafood in the district, is a must try for anyone passing through town. The location overlooks part of the Lake Cunninghame Arm making it a picturesque vantage point for a fabulous dining experience. The Central is also a hub for some talented local musos who perform on Saturday nights. Their Facebook page is regularly updated with What’s On info. In addition to the family
friendly bistro and al fresco dining areas with killer views, the hotel has a relaxing Sports Lounge and Bar, a public bar, motel accommodation and function rooms. On Friday nights the pub puts on a raffle, pool comp and local draw. If you’re visiting Lakes do yourself a favour and drop into the Central and sample what’s on offer first hand. One of the Gippslander team did just that and has described his experience to the right. Central-Hotel-Lakes-Entrance

Wellington Shire News Central Hotel Food Review After a friendly greeting and being shown to our table, we learned that seafood is the speciality of the house and the Moreton Bay bugs in particular were a real treat. We ordered the Bugs and local prawns and a steak and relaxed while watching the boats on the front Lake and passers by enjoying a walk along the promenade. In a short time our bugs and prawns arrived with a very generous serve of both and we tucked in eagerly. Fresh is the word here with the local prawns a good size and very tasty. For mains, I had a Garlic Butter topped steak on a bed of fresh, crisp vegetables and creamy mashed potatoes, cooked to perfection and melt in your mouth, absolutely delicious. The wife continued with the seafood and enjoyed more of the fresh local prawns. For desert we chose a yummy sticky date pudding and a strawberry meringue that was to die for. We were very impressed by the entire experience and will be back for more!

Rosedale, tourism bloomer The village of Rosedale, nestled between Traralgon and Sale, is a real goer of a little town. We at the Gippslander think Rosedale should win the award for best Town Facebook page. The village uses the medium extremeley well to promote local businesses, fundraising efforts, community events (which the Facebook managers often create) and surrounding towns and hamlets. As we go to print they are up to 3,250 likes which is pretty good going for a village with a population around half that. The benefits of using Facebook to create some buzz is not just limited to getting onto your Fans News Feeds. It’s also a great image archive as you can upload images at quite large file sizes, unlike websites where the aim is to keep images small so the page loads quickly, which is becoming even
more important with the increasing uptake of Smartphones. Larger images are great to have on hand for other publicity avenues like print because print needs large files to reproduce images with any sort of quality. Interesting images are a real must on social media as they increase shares and your visitors engagement exponentially. It’s a good idea to put captions on them too because you never know where people are coming from on the world wide web, it really helps create context. The energy and buzz of Rosedale is evidently attracting new business as we’ve just heard on the Rosedale Facebook grapevine that 9 new small stores are planning to open up in town. LIKE the Discover-Rosedale Facebook page and keep yourself up with the goings on.

Eco cruising on the Lakes LONSDALE Eco Cruises, named for their craft The Lonsdale, operate a 3 hour cruise largely between Lakes Entrance and Metung to explore the wildlife wonderland – an eco system that sustains dolphins, seals, sixty five species of birds, goats on Flanagan Island, kangaroos and much more in some spectacular scenery. The Lonsdale was built in 1974 as a converted foot passenger ferry with a capacity of 80 and operated between Queenscliff and Sorrento. The craft has an interesting and somewhat chequered history that is well
told by its skipper Tony during the cruise. Now completely refurbished, the Lonsdale is an all weather vessel and departs from the Cunninghame Quay across from the Central Hotel in Lakes Entrance at 1pm – bookings are essential. Regular snaps of wildlife sightings appear regularly on their Facebook page. Check it out. www.facebook.com/LonsdaleCruises

Loving those prawns...
OUR fishing insider at Lakes Entrance, ‘Ross the Fish Whisperer’ of Riviera Bait Supplies, reports that the fishing in his part of the world is still running hot. Apparently the prawn catches are truly abundant at Lake Tyers and Gippsland Lakes. Now’s the time to catch a great feed and hook right in! The ocean beach has plenty of
Salmon and Ross says that some are weighing in at up to 5 lbs. There are still a lot of Flathead in the lakes and anglers are landing Trevally with Bluebait off the Footbridge and the town Jetty. Hoping between the Footbridge and jetty will see results as there are big schools around. Ross advises that King George
Whiting are still being landed in the Channel with the water temperature up around 20.5 degrees. The Metung Jetty and Boardwalk are producing great Bream and King George Whiting catches. It is generally reported that all parts of the Lake have been fishing well with Big Tailor around 50cm at Blackfellows Arm chasing metal lures

STEP 2: Add prawns to boiling water. STEP 3: Cook for 3-4 minutes. Prawns are done when they float to the top of the water. To test, take out a prawn and hold it to the light, it is cooked when the flesh has shrunk from the shell slightly and the prawn looks translucent. STEP 4: When they’re done, remove them from the boiling water and place in a big bowl of iced water to cool them. STEP 5: Peel and eat! Great on their own or serve with vinegar, lemon or just bread and butter. Also great for use in salads, fried rice and many other dishes.

The Mother’s Day Classic Sunday 11th May Wonthaggi Golf Course
A record 97 locations will be in the pink around Australia on Sunday May 11 for the Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic, Australia’s largest breast cancer research fundraiser and Wonthaggi will a participating location. Organisers are delighted with the support from regional Australia in the fight against a disease that impacts one in 8 women. This year regional events have grown from 65 to a record 86. In 2013, a record $5 million was raised by 135,000 supporters who took part in the event across Australia. In 2014 a major milestone will be celebrated – the event, which began in 1998 and is now the largest funder of National Breast Cancer Foundation Research, will pass the $20 million mark for the program. Mother’s Day Classic national chair, Louise Davidson, said the support from regional Australia was overwhelming, not only from a fundraising perspective but to show rural and regional women with breast cancer that they were not alone. “Participants will tell you there is something special about the atmosphere at the Mother’s Day Classic, whether you attend a huge capital city event or a small community gathering,” Ms Davidson said. “Mother’s Day Classic is all about
raising awareness and honouring those impacted by the disease, as well as funding vital research into treatment, detection and prevention. “The more funds we raise, the faster a cure can be found. So instead of just registering this year, why not fundraise?
“Funding research is a great investment in the future,” she said. Since the Foundation’s inception, 5 year survival rates for women diagnosed with breast cancer have increased to 89%. Despite these advances, on average 7 Australian women die each day from breast cancer. With research, more can be done. Ms Davidson says “Mother’s Day Classic is a celebration of spirit and hope that together we can contribute to making breast cancer history.” Mother’s Day Classic Wonthaggi The Wonthaggi event involves a 5km walk and 10km run. Alternatively you can come along and support all walkers and runners and join in the entertainment and activity taking place around the course. You can also fill in a tribute card to wear on the day in memory of a loved one or with words of encouragement to someone currently undergoing treatment.

Club of the Month – Italian Australian Club Morwell
The Italian Australian connection
The 1950’s were a prosperous time for Morwell with the construction of the Morwell Power Station, Briquette Works and other major, large industrial projects, attracting many migrants in search of jobs to the Latrobe Valley. Apart from British, the greatest numbers of these were Italians. The majority were either single men or men with families who came out alone with the objective of saving enough to bring the rest of their family to Australia. Even when the construction jobs dwindled, many of these men decided that the Latrobe Valley was a good place in which to settle and raise a family. Early in 1960, a small group of Italians and Australians, led by Luigi Sola of Traralgon, saw the necessity of establishing an association principally to cater for
the social and cultural needs of the growing Italian population of the area, as well as helping the integration process with the community at large. A team of trustees came together and founded the Italian Social Club and the rest as they say is history. These days the Club is attracting high calibre shows for all to enjoy and provides a top class functions service and family bistro.

Leongatha – Town of the Month
Life
A stylish new retirement option with valley views
Celebrations and Revelations Mountain View Leongatha village was recently a hive of activity as residents, clients and new comers enjoyed a Celebration event. With a party atmosphere, the Village environment was transformed into a festival feel, with great music from an invited band, fabulous food and a very busy BBQ cooking plenty of sausages. The Leongatha Bowling Club also featured on the day with a demonstration of bowling on the Village Bowling Green. Many people who took the opportunity to visit on this day were also invited to view the entire Village facilities and the new Villas built in stage two. They experienced the quality of the Villas firsthand and also the purpose built facilities of the Community Centre, plus the panoramic views across the hills and township – a great feature of the Village. Stage 2 now in its completion phase. The Villas within this Stage 2 are currently creating interest and lots of enquiries because of their unique offering. These Villas are at ‘lock up’ stage with some built to the ‘frame stage’ only inside, allowing any prospective resident the opportunity to make amendments before the build’s completion. In other words, you can personalise a Villa with your own ‘choices’. Pre-purchase is available now. Mountain View Leongatha encourages people who are interested in ‘lifestyle living’ to visit at the earliest possible time to secure their future now and to begin the processes of moving in. Financial options Options exclusive to Mountain View Leongatha are available for people considering the lifestyle change
to our fabulous Village. These financial options will not be found at other lifestyle or retirement developments, so make sure you contact us to find out how, with limited capital you can enjoy the lifestyle and Village life benefits. Mountain View Leongatha would love to discuss these options with prospective residents to ensure their decision making process is outlined with all the facts, and to demonstrate the financial freedom to enjoy the next season of their life. Because all Villages are not the same, it is important to view the differences ● Mountain View Leongatha is a ‘boutique’ 45 Villa Village with a maximum residency expected to be from 70 to 80 people. This means no overcrowding. ● The financial advantages are unique and offer a personalised agreement to suit each situation. The Mountain View Leongatha Village/Sales Manager can be called at any time to discuss your personal situation, to inspect the Village and discuss financial options. Lifestyle Day to Day New residents who have moved into the Village are ‘over the moon’ about their new lifestyle. Their decision to move into Mountain View Leongatha has presented freedom and leisure. Residents are enjoying morning walks, morning afternoon and evening swims in the heated pool, exploring nearby tourist destinations, or just staying local and playing a game of bowls on the Village Bowling Green. Information presentations are regularly scheduled to discuss Lifestyle Living, assisting people to become acquainted with the benefits of Village life in this next season of their life. If you have not attended one of these

Leongatha – Town of the Month
Life after George LIFE after George, the play that broke box office records during its Melbourne premiere season, opens in May at Leongatha’s Lyric Theatre with a stellar local cast. It is the story of Peter George – a charismatic academic, idealist and lover of life who is now dead. His wife, two ex-wives and daughter gather for his funeral. As the true nature of the man and his life unfolds, so these women discover much about themselves and the lives they have lived both within and outside his shadow. Life After George is a moving and perceptive insight into social change told through individual
experiences. From the barricades of the late 1960s anti-government riots in Paris to Melbourne during the next three decades. Written with passion and dangerous wit, Life After George is a compelling drama from Hannie Rayson, the author of Hotel Sorrento. The work, which was released in 2000, won a slew of accolades in 2001 including the VIC Premier’s Literary Awards – Louis Esson Prize for Drama, the Green Room Award – Best New Australian Play, the Helpmann Award – Best New Australian Work and the AWGIE Award – Stage Award.
Rayson was born in Melbourne, and graduated from the University of Melbourne and the Victorian College of Arts. She has worked as a freelance journalist and editor in addition to her primary career as playwright and screenwriter. Rayson was the co-founder of the community theatre group, Theatreworks in Melbourne’s eastern suburb of St. Kilda, working there for four years while writing. Rayson has been writer-in-residence at Geelong’s Mill Theatre, Playbox Theatre, La Trobe University (which has awarded her an Honorary Doctorate of Letters), and Monash University. Recognised as one of Australia’s most significant playwrights,

‘Life after George’ playwright, Hannie Rayson.
Rayson’s first major success was Hotel Sorrento, which won several prizes including the Australian Writers’ Guild Award. The play has become an Australian classic, regularly performed by regional
theatre groups, and appearing in university courses and on the high school syllabus. The film of the play, directed by Richard Franklin, won an AFI Award for best screenplay (Peter Fitzpatrick and Franklin). In 2010, the play’s London debut won critical acclaim. Rayson plays have been a popular mainstay of Australian state theatre companies’ programming for the past decade. Her more recent works are Falling from Grace, Scenes from a Separation (written with Andrew Bovell), Competitive Tenderness, Life After George, Inheritance, The Glass Soldier and The Swimming Club.

This year, Arty Gras has secured a grant from the Regional Arts Fund to offer workshops in music and for the first time, theatre. First Time Theatre workshops are a great way for novices to get started... parade but you’ll have to attend to find out why. This year Arty Gras has secured a grant from the Regional Arts Fund to offer workshops in music, and for the first time, theatre. Dan Clancey, a theatre producer and director who has completed commissions for the Mirboo North Arts Council, calls the program, aptly named First Time Theatre, ‘his’ workshops, and they are open to all ages. In Dan’s words, ‘I have heard many times over the years from people who would love to become involved in theatre, but they are scared that experienced theatre people get the roles and there is no room for new people to step in and have a try’. First Time Theatre is for those without experience who will be trained on an equal basis by
professionals over 8 weeks, for a short performance during Arty Gras. Are you up for it? Music workshops
and First Time Theatre sessions being run in the lead up to ArtyGras are outlined on the next page.

First Time Theatre The next wave in performing arts The major barrier for community members taking the first step into a theatre project usually isn’t the lack of talent or the desire to become involved, the major barrier is the belief that they can perform at the same level as everyone else. First Time Theatre has been run successfully in 2009 and 2010 in Latrobe City. Over 35 people undertook the course, many of whom are still performing with local theatre companies. The benefits of First Time Theatre ● No hierarchy of cast members (they are all equals) ● FREE Training in the basic principles of Performing Arts ● A public performance (if desired and no pressure) ● An even playing field for all people to extend their creativity What is required ● Commitment from participants for 4 weeks training (8 sessions with a performance) ● A strong desire to have a go and develop skills ● No fear and no apologies ● Understanding that all people are equal and in the same boat “There’s a first time for everything!” Where: The program will be held at the Mirboo North RSL Hall Tutors – Eloisa Tripodi and Dan Clancey April 15, 17, 22, 24, 29 and May 1, 6, 8. New album for local muso
I can entertain you
IN 2013, Gippsland musician Brody Young took off on an overseas sojourn with his guitar and his girlfriend. He returned with a fiancée and a head full of songs. Those songs have since been recorded, and the exchange of ideas that took place during his travels – to 23 different countries – has clearly been the inspiration behind his new album, One Way, which was launched on March 28. This is Brody’s third album and, as he explains, there’s a real contrast to the relaxed, contemplative style of his first two efforts. “It’s more upbeat and exciting. The other two CDs are good, but they’re for easy listening. This one’s more in your face,” the 26-year-old said. “This one is more about emotion. It’s about observing and seeing how people live life and how I am going to live my life.” The next step for Brody, who has a solid following in South Gippsland and the Latrobe Valley, is to build a name for himself beyond his home territory.
We will make you stand out from the crowd!
BY CHERRY PRIOR
He wants to take his all-original music to a much wider audience. “The big goal for this whole album is to do more festivals. I want to go travelling Australia and the world doing festivals,” Brody said. A plumber by trade, Brody grew up in Yinnar and Boolarra, and attended secondary school at Mirboo North, building a solid following from an early age. “I started off playing drums when I was eight and found guitar when I was 16. I started writing songs when I was 18,” he said. “The best thing that I like about this new album is they’re all new songs. I have only written them six months ago and now I have got a new CD.” A new website accompanies Brody’s new CD – check it out and sample some of his tunes at brodyyoung.com. Or better yet, check out Brody live. He’s appearing at Leading Edge Music in Sale on 19 April (11.30am) and at Mirboo North’s Arty Gras festival on 10 May (12 noon).
Circled: Brody Young.

Are you being smart with your debt?
savings to? How many credit cards, store accounts and loans do you have? Are you paying more than the minimum repayment off of these each month? If you’re not, then it’s time to start. Make small spending changes, and start to pay more off your debt. Every little bit counts and makes a considerable difference over time.
5 Consider debt consolidation. You can roll the balance of several credit cards onto one credit card that offers you a no or low interest period for 6-months or more. This will allow you to pay-off your credit card debt faster. If you have other forms of debt, such as loans and store accounts, and you are buying your own home, then you can consider refinancing your home to pay-out your debt. If you elect to go with this option, just make sure you pay more than the minimum payment each month. This ensures that you minimise the amount of interest that you pay over the term of your loan.

Good Earth great food THE recently established Good Earth Cafe in Inverloch offers an intimate dining experience and customers can expect a very warm welcome from the owner, Kristin.
The menu is simple, yet elegant and has been thoughtfully created by Mitchell Banks, the young enthusiast chef. Mitchell also greets diners and loves to discuss his dishes. Good Earth uses the best local,
organic and seasonal produce including Gippy Milk, Port Franklin fish, Waratah Lamb and a variety of local cheeses. They also specialise in vegan and vegetarian choices and delicious freshly baked sourdough rolls. Our correspondent reports “I absolutely loved the beautifully tender Chicken Masala and seasonal vegetables which included crispy kipfler potatoes and roasted beetroot and my dining companion tucked into the succulent rolled Waratah Lamb filled with organic date puree, topped with tomato mustard and accompanied by seasonal vegetables. The meals were generously portioned with no need for extra side dishes. “The highlight of the meal for this Coeliac was a delicious Pear
tart made with crisp tasty gluten free pastry, the first time I can remember eating a GF tart in a restaurant in 30 years. Good Earth also provides interesting breakfast and lunch menus, using local, seasonal organic and raw ingredients in delicious combinations. The outdoor area is a perfect setting for these meals as well as early morning coffees. “I highly recommend this destination, and not just because it’s a gluten free delight” she says. Located on the road into town from Leongatha at number 9 Williams Street, opposite the Bendigo Community Bank, Good Earth is open for dinner on Saturday nights. AS the leaves begin to fall, you know that autumn has arrived. The bright sunny skies of summer have been replaced by auburn orange hues and the sound of rolling thunderclouds. Just like you, your garden doesn’t always respond well to the change in weather, and quickly descends into hibernation in preparation for spring. But that doesn’t mean your garden needs to look cold and grey to match the weather. Just because your garden is hiding its best assets, doesn’t mean you should hide yours. Dig a little deeper and you will find that Mick n Phil’s Garden Supplies has just the thing to transform your garden from weathered to wow. Mick n Phil’s Garden Supplies sells small outdoor living sets, indoor wood fire supplies, assorted pots, outdoor mirrors and decorations, and other trinkets to make your outdoor area a place you want to stay. Owners Mick Slattery and Phil Cuthill started the business to meet the growing demand for garden supplies in the Sale area. Mick has a long history in the industry and wanted to pursue his dream of opening a garden supplies shop. “It’s something Mick always wanted to do. Mick has always worked with bobcats and excavators and he always wanted to do a garden supplies shop. I worked with Mick and when the idea got brought up we thought ‘let’s have a go’.” After only two weeks of business, Phil says the community support has been great.

Pavement in the landscape WITH the the arrival of spring and daylight savings, people will again start to think about creating versatile outdoor dining, entertainment and relaxation areas. One of the most popular and cost effective ways of increasing the liveable areas of the home is to create courtyards and terraces with paving. Liz Filmer, of Liz Filmer Landscaping, says “There are many different methods of constructing paving and the most important element in the process is base preparation. If there is movement in the base, you can expect movement in the finished surface and repairing poorly constructed paving or concrete will be expensive. “Don’t necessarily go for the cheapest contractor as there is usually something that they haven’t included or considered in their quotation,” Liz says.
So if you can’t choose a paving contractor on price how do you choose one?
Makeover Profile
First of all you need to be aware that for any paving or concreting works that are over the value of $5000, you are required by law to engage a licensed structural landscaper to carry out the works. These contractors are licensed builders and registered with the building commission only after passing a stringent assessment process. Contractors who are members of industry groups such as Landscaping Victoria have also been assessed to certify they are competent to complete the task. Smart renovators who spend time and money at the front end of their renovation creating a well designed project that’s costed and supervised through construction are the ones who get the best result and add value to their property.
New from the old BY WENDY MORRISS IN 2008, Anne-Marie Frawley took possession of a home in Sale that was built by her great great-grandparents. Since then she has lovingly restored the home and landscaped the garden.
Paving is a low maintenance, durable and very attractive investment in your home.
The heritage residence, which has been in the family since 1870, is where Anne-Marie lived throughout her childhood. “My mother was the last family member living here,” she said. “The generations had finished as they do, so I continued on and decided to renovate. Now I practically have a brand new house with a very nice garden.” She said she decided to get in a landscaper gardener because she wanted the garden to reflect what she had put into the house. “I think if you are spending dollars on your home, the garden is an important part of it. The garden shows it off and I love my garden.”
Base preparation is critical to the longevity of paving works.
Paving design provides a structural base for a landscaping plan.

Throughout the garden is parquetry paving and various interesting tree species. There is a picking area with fruit trees including lime, lemon, orange, apple and passionfruit and a raised cemented vegetable garden. “I thought I’d kill the plants,” Anne Marie said, “but it’s very easy to manage and I have vegies all year round.” The entertaining area has a Japanese theme and fountain with Japanese maples in the background, which she said is very relaxing and lighting illuminates the garden at night, which really enhances it.

Personalised Design Professional Construction
She said she knew Liz Filmer was a very competent landscape
gardener. “I’m really not a gardener myself but Liz has created a garden that I can enjoy without being a gardener. It’s very low maintenance. I gave her an open palette I suppose you’d say and she was very open, and great to work with. She used some of her own ideas and mixed them with a few of mine. By communicating with me, she knew what I liked, and she knew what I hadn’t experienced before, that I’d like as well.”

Drafting projects into life...
D. ANDERSON, the home based architectural drafting and design business of Damian Anderson, is a comprehensive service covering a large geographical area from Melbourne to Mallacoota. Damian says “coming from a background in building I enjoy getting the most from a site and working out the nuts and bolts to make the project work in the best possible way for the client. “Plus being a home based business I am able to keep the costs down compared to a lot of other businesses that have to pay rent, employees, etcetera. Damian is a registered building practitioner and BDAV member, and can handle all your building design and drafting needs from home additions and renovations to new homes, factories and commercial buildings. Unlike a lot of other businesses Damian does all his own surveying, town planning applications (including BMO statements and
BAL assessments), energy ratings including first rate 5 for residential applications and section “J” assessments for commercial applications. “I aim to provide a cost effective service that does not require a lot of outsourcing to other consultants, saving time and money on projects. For a streamlined and cost conscious architectural drafting and design option keep Damian in mind for your next project.

April in the vegie patch APRIL is a quieter month as far as planting goes but is a good month to do some preparation for later sowings of broad beans and onions. It is still time to sow white turnips. Turnips are great for soup and are also an ingredient in traditional pasties.
Garden beds that are not going to be used for a while can be tidied up. You can compost any crop residue or simply turn it in so that it can rot. Tomato and potato tops are probable best disposed of to reduce the chance of viral or other diseases being carried into the next season. These beds could also be used as ‘burial grounds’ for your daily output of kitchen waste (tea leaves, tea bags minus the strings, coffee grounds, fruit and vegetable peels and waste). Remove the strings off tea bags as they may not rot and can tangle the legs of little birds that are giving your garden a ‘work over’ looking for pests. Tomato plants which are nearly spent but which still have a lot of unripe tomatoes on them can be pulled up by the roots and hung upside down in a shed or under a verandah where the tomatoes will continue to ripen. Snails and slugs love the cooler, damper weather and
PROFESSIONAL SERVICE 6 STAR ENERGY RATINGS TOWN PLANNING APLICATIONS WILL BEAT ANY PRICE MELBOURNE TO MALLACOOTA
numerous small ones appear in the autumn. Slugs love mulch and like their shell-backed cousins are every gardeners scourge. There is a product called Multiguard – Slug & Snail which is very effective against these pests. It is iron sulphate in a pellet form and is harmless to birds, animals and people. There may be other brands around that I am not aware of but this one is safe and definitely works. Earwigs wreak havoc with lettuce and other soft leafed plants, they also love flowers. Screw up pieces of newspaper and put them around your garden, beside fences or in tipped over pots or tins. They will hide in them during the day and the paper can easily be collected and tied in a plastic bag before putting in the bin. Check any of your brassica crops (cabbage, broccoli, etc.) for caterpillars and control with ‘Dipel’ if necessary. Dipel is a bacteria spray and is death to caterpillars and chewing pests but harmless to birds, animals and people.
If you have particular questions about food growing you can email me on: info@ezy-gro.com I will reply within 24 hours during weekdays and on Monday morning for weekend enquiries. I’m sorry I can’t take phone calls (as much as I’d like to).

Nancy’s Notes Howdy Folks! Isn’t this autumn weather wonderful?! In fact, a lot of us think this is the best time of year for planting most anything. The unrelenting heat is gone; the days and soil are still warm, and off we go to our gardens. We’ve done some prep work, so I get to choose a few lovelies today. One that has caught my eye is the feathered Hyacinth with her fluffy lavender flowers. An added bonus is that you don’t have to lift her bulbs every year! I’ve also spotted a couple of shrubs that I don’t think I can leave. One is the luscious Luculia ‘Early Dawn.’ Growing to a height of 1.5 metres, she has large fragrant pink flower heads in winter. Next to this will be Clerodendrum ugandense, the Blue Butterfly Bush, and that is just what the flowers look like, bright blue butterflies dancing on the 2 metre shrub throughout the summer. My East facing fence will no longer be ugly! Next, may we be Myth Busters for a tic? I’m over ‘you must plant your sweet peas on St.Pats Day.’ Poppycock! In our area, great success stories have happened from February through June! The other myth we hear is; ‘plant onions on the shortest day of the year and harvest on the longest.’ Busted! Some white onions can be planted as early as February for late winter, and we have seen that great keeper, Cream Gold (Pukekohe) planted in October and harvested in February. Of course, you can plant Spring Onions when you wish, or use your baby onions like a Spring Onion. Just quickly, in the ‘Wacky Season’ Department, my friend Ria’s waratah flowered in the winter-spring as it should. This morning, it was doing it all over again! Go figure! Let us know what is happening in your garden, please. We would love to hear from ya’ll. Enjoy! Happy Gardening! Cheers, Nancy
