The Musical Incubator THE Gippsland Acoustic Music Club Inc has been supporting music in Gippsland since 1982. Acoustic music covers a broad spectrum and the Club plays host to many variations of the genre, from folksy guitar music to mellow blues, acapella to jazz and music from other cultures – Celtic, Irish, African and Reggae for example. Australian ‘home grown’ varieties also feature and local musicians often perform their own compositions. Supper is held at intermission and is a great opportunity to socialize and acquire a new CD for your collection – from local, national and international performers. You can become a member for a nominal yearly fee and receive the monthly newsletter and reduced door prices. Membership is available on club nights or by mail. Baw Baw Shire News
Gone Fishing Destination Gippsland, our peak tourism body, recently released the Inspiring Gippsland Fishing Guide at the Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort as part of the Mt Baw Baw Fly Fishing competition in late November. Andrew Wilson, Marketing Manager at Destination Gippsland launched the Guide. Locals and visitors are really spoilt for choice when it comes to angling in the region. With the largest inland waterway in Australia and several major tributaries flowing through the landscape let alone the coast, there are plenty of fishing options to pursue. The Guide maps hotspots for coastal, lake and river fishing. It is aimed at
both new and experienced anglers and does a great job of showcasing one of Australia’s most abundant destinations for recreational fishing. Other features of the comprehensive Guide include maps detailing fishing platforms, boat ramps, fuel points and other facilities to make fishing trips safer and easier. The easy-to-use layout enables people to get started, with licensing and safety advice, finding their next fishing spot and working out which rig and method to use. The guide is available at Gippsland Visitor Information Centre’s and online at www. inspiringgippslandfishing.com.au

Ideal for couples or families
We’re all going on a Summer Holiday IT’S heating up in Lakes Entrance as the beautiful seaside town gears up for its regular influx of Summer visitors. The popular tourist destination has loads of activities planned for the whole family over the holiday season. This New Year’s Eve the annual Skyfest fireworks display promises to be the best in its 60 year history with a whole range of events organised
for the evening, leading up to a spectacular crescendo at midnight. There’ll actually be two fireworks displays – one at 9.30pm for the kids and the later session at midnight. The show is becoming more spectacular each year with leading fireworks pyrotechnicians and family business “Foti International” in charge of proceedings. Fireworks have been a tradition for
the Foti family since 1793. Australia’s most awarded fireworks company as well as Australia’s largest fireworks manufacturer and display operator, Foti have designed and produced fireworks for Sydney’s New Year’s Eve every year since 1997, Turkish National Day Celebration in Istanbul and Foti were the official pyrotechnic consultants, designers and suppliers for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Sydney 2000 Olympics games. So, with the fireworks in expert hands, let’s get onto the music, you can’t have a party without it. This year crowd favourites the Rusty Nails will return to head the line up. They will be ably supported by a plethora of local talent including an Aboriginal dance performance.

East Gippsland – Summer Fun in Lakes Entrance What’s On... Family Festival Carnival All Summer Free Kids Activities. In excess of 20 Carnival rides, games & amusements will be on the Foreshore this year from December 21 ‘till the end of the Holidays. Bigger & better than last year. See Page 9 for times.
Up to 20,000 people will attend Skyfest at New Years, making it the most popular festival in East Gippsland. Festivities start at 5pm on the foreshore near the footbridge and finish with the midnight fireworks display. Skyfest is an alcohol free event. This year there is a bonus attraction in the form of aerobatic stunt pilot Andrew Temby and his flying machine. An avid motor enthusiast for as long as he can remember, Andrew constructs and maintains his own aircraft, most notably the Aerostar Yak-52TW. “They have a real war-bird feel to them,” says Andrew noting that the
Your No.
roar of the plane’s supercharged ninecylinder engine is a spectacle in itself. The aircraft was originally built in 2004 by Aerostar in Romania, registered in the USA and finally exported to Australia in 2007. One of the few low level Australian airshow pilots and Australian and Victorian Aerobatic Champion for several years, Andrew has performed aerobatics at numerous shows, events and festivals, including formation displays in many types of aircraft. The amusement carnival is also back and is based on the foreshore again, after being moved inland over recent years. It’s such a summer thing to do, the kids will love it. There will be rides for the littlies,
1
sideshows and some adrenalin rush options for the big kids. The carnival will be in full swing around December 21 and extend through the entire summer holiday period, until the end of January. There’ll also be free activities organised by the town’s folk on the foreshore – including the ever popular Duck Races, face painting, balloon making, discos and a Petting Farm (see the breakout panel at right for more details). So get into the summer carnival atmosphere and have a great time at Lakes. Have a happy & safe New Year!

MOSSVALE Park, South Gippsland, is a sublime setting for the annual ‘Summer of Soul’ event, proudly presented by the renowned Lyrebird Arts Council. The Council has a reputation for attracting an extremely high standard of acts and the one day event is always a great success. BYO a picnic or graze from a tantalising array of food and wine vendors. You can bring your own alcoholic beverages.
About the Music The fuzzy guitars, roomy drums and pounding bass lines of indie rock psychedelic band Pony Face will kick off the day’s entertainment. Followed by Hiatus Kaiyote, an eclectic band that can’t be easily pinpointed. Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, Tupac Shakur, Flying Lotus, traditional flamenco and music from Mali and Colombia have all influenced the group. Whilst the next two bands up don’t strictly play soul music they do have massive soul IN their music. The Bombay Royale, a Melbourne band dedicated to honouring and reviving the funky, bizarre and mysterious music of vintage Indian cinema, performs a riotously colourful live show. In addition to being a fabulous spectacle, the 11-piece band comprises some of Melbourne’s most seasoned musicians. After three years in the wilderness, Melbourne cult heroes The Basics Right: Lee Fields & The Expressions at Luxor in Cologne, Germany. Photography by: Fabian Stuertz. Front cover: Clairy Browne and the Bangin’ Rackettes.
announce their return! The Basics will be celebrating their catalogue of good-time genre-bending classics, with their latest single “So Hard For You” showcasing the gritty live sound that has come to define the band. Fierce leading lady Clairy Browne and her harmonizing girl group, the Bangin’ Rackettes are up next. The nine piece rhythm and blues big band will take you through the hardhitting sounds of northern soul, jump blues, doo-wop, ska and gospel with influences ranging from Etta James, Tina Turner and Prince to D’Angelo and Salt n’ Peppa. There aren’t too many artists making soul music today who had a release in 1969; Lee Fields, however, is one such artist – or maybe he’s better labelled a phenomenon. With a play list that ranges from James Brown-style funk to lo-fi blues to contemporary Southern soul, Lee Fields has done it all. Today, with band The Expressions, Lee Fields continues to evolve into the group’s sweeping, string-laden, cinematic soul sound. Their first full-length track, My World, released in June 2009 on Truth & Soul, was called “one smoking mother of an oldsound soul record” and a “throwback done right” by the Pitchfork music review site.

Fostering a creative life ORIGINALLY called Stockyard Creek, after the stream which still flows through the centre of the town, Foster, was later named after the first adjudicating magistrate in 1871. That’s where Stockyard Gallery, a community not-for-profit art gallery run entirely by volunteers, has taken its name. The gallery has been designed with a well-lit exhibition space and mounts a new show every 2 to 4 weeks. It’s a brilliant showcase opportunity for the work of many talented Gippsland artists. The audience comprises both the local community and the many visitors to the region, especially during summer. Under the auspices of the South Gippsland Shire Council, the gallery opened in May 1991 and with the wonderful work of successive teams of volunteers the gallery and its activities have steadily developed. One of the most exciting initiatives by the gallery is the upcoming The Life Aquatic Small Canvas Exhibition and Competition, now an inaugural event.
Calling all Artists This years theme for The Life Aquatic is ‘Impressions of Coastal Life in South Gippsland’. Artists and hobbyists have until 11am 22nd January to create their works. See the website for all entry conditions. An initial Launch Party will be

held at the gallery on Friday January 24 from 5pm to 7pm and everyone is invited. The official canvases are now available, see the breakout panel at right for details.
Criteria: As long as the official 2014 (20 x 20cm) framed canvases are used and the measurement of 20 x 20 cm is not exceeded, the depth is up to the artist, which means the artwork can be 2D or 3D. There is no limit on the number of entries; it can be a single entry, a diptych, a triptych, a tetraptych, a qiadriptych, pentapych, hexaptych, heptaptych or an octaptych! It’s up to the artist. (Note: canvases must not be joined together in any way). Any medium and material can be used: paint, pencil, photography, mosaic, textiles, ceramic, metal or glass for example. Some great prizes are in the offing for winning artworks in the categories of Best in Show ($500), second place 2D and 3D ($250 each), second place photographic/digital ($250) and Peoples’ Choice ($500). There are also prizes for Primary and Secondary student entries. The winning artworks will be announced at a barbecue event on Saturday, February 9th at 12noon. Festivities will include food, wine and music.

Christmas Day Survival Tips CHRISTMAS is a time of celebration and sharing quality time with family and friends. If you are cooking for the family on the day, best to plan ahead otherwise you’ll be totally worn out before you get the chance to enjoy it! Start Now Don’t procrastinate, do it or write it down. Getting things out of your head and done or onto paper makes for a clearer mind and gives an empowering sense of satisfaction.
The Food Shop Shopping seems like an endless task at Christmas, so make a master-shopping list of everything you will need, including equipment. Break it down into smaller lists based on where you will go to get the items you need. Also divide the list into perishable and non-perishable goods including drinks and buy all the nonperishables well in advance and get them out of the way. Order any specialist goods
(perishable and non-perishable) ahead of time, for example butchers are encouraging their customers to order meats now, make sure you don’t miss out, it’s also one less thing to think about. Perishable goods don’t need to be bought on Christmas Eve. Buy them a day or two before and store them in the fridge. One extra point: Don’t start experimenting on Christmas day unless its something really simple.
At The 3 Cheeky Monkeys we stock European and wooden toys that require NO batteries - only your imagination.

Local Xmas Food & Gifts Delegate Make a list of the jobs you can delegate – peeling the potatoes, polishing the cutlery, cooking the different cuts of meat at other family members houses – remember it’s about everyone enjoying themselves. People are happy to contribute and fluff about in the kitchen it’s all part of the celebration. Time Plan Making a time plan for Christmas day is time well-spent. Not only does it help in organising the cooking, it also organises your mind. As jobs keep popping into your mind, write them down and slot them into the plan. Time for a bit of relaxing between jobs is also an important factor for your overall enjoyment of the experience.
Jobs you just don’t think about There are a few jobs that are often overlooked and will make Christmas cooking easier. Sharpen knives including the carving knife well in advance. Makes all the chopping, peeling and carving so much easier. Clean out the freezer well before Christmas and make space for all the food to be stored together in one place. Rummaging through an overstocked, messy freezer will do your head in. A week before Christmas give the fridge a good sort through and clean and make space for storage – time for all the old jars and leftovers to get the heave ho. Deep clean the oven, or better yet get the bloke to do the meat in a convection barbie.
They love carving meat too. Another delegation done! OR DINE OUT Another option would be to go out and have your celebration catered at one of many fine eating establishments that are open Christmas Day. Avail yourself of their fine Christmas spreads and that way all you have to do is laugh, talk, eat, get home and have a good lie down, that’s if you are not rushing off to another do. Above all take it easy, better to get where you’re going in one piece than not at all. Maintaining a relaxed attitude will make the day so much more enjoyable. Have a fabulous Chrissy Day from the team at Gippslander!
Christmas Gift Ideas We have some fantastic retailers throughout the towns of Gippsland. Here’s just a few ideas to get you started.

The Neerim District Progress Association has successfully obtained a grant of $350,000 from the Regional Arts Victoria “Transform Small Towns through the Arts” initiative. The grant is awarded for programs that promote the arts and provide a legacy of arts events and activities that continue to enhance and improve towns using arts as the vehicle. One such project, the Neerim Bower – inspired the town’s Wetlands, will be a large piece of significant public art placed at the town’s entrance and surrounded by landscaped gardens featuring indigenous plantings
Bendigo Bank
Neerim District Community Bank® Branch recently awarded its 2013 grants, bringing the total community contributions to $1.6 million since the branch opened in July 2000. Neerim District Financial Services Chairman Paul Bright said the breadth of the branch’s grants program was an “exceptional achievement for a small community and shows the foresight of the community members who set up the branch 13 years ago”. “Their vision of a locally owned and operated branch working to serve its community has certainly come to fruition” he said. This year seven community groups in the Neerim, Buln Buln, Nilma North and Noojee areas received grants totalling more than $56,136.22.

A wide range of community events are scheduled throughout 2014. These include artist in residence programs for both the Primary and the Secondary schools and a variety of arts workshops run by local artists. In addition a community arts prize will provide everyone the opportunity to participate and perhaps win a valuable prize. The branch’s partnership with the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank’s philanthropic arm, Community Enterprise Foundation™, which facilitates the allocation of funds has enabled local organisations to share in the success. WEDDING GUIDE Feature coming to Gippslander in the New Year!
Focussing on Niche Visitor Markets
RENEE Ricci, an Event management and touring expert with over a decade of experience working in the Yarra Valley, has moved her focus and her life to Bass Coast. With a thorough understanding of the Yarra Valley’s increasing profile as a destination for tours, events and functions, including some of her own experiences as coordinator for Grape Grazing Festivals and Hen’s Tours, Renee is on a mission to bring the same growth to Bass Coast. Renee says “I fell in love with the area some time ago. I’ve been taking my holidays here since ‘99 and now that I’m a resident I want to see this region experience the same kind of growth that I witnessed in the Yarra Valley. “Philip Island, in particular, is very good at drawing visitors to attractions, but I can see scope for more. Pushing Bass Coast as a romantic location to stage your wedding is what I am currently focussed on. I want to use my knowledge of Yarra Valley’s developing story as a function destination and apply it here. “We can spread the benefits to a broad range of business providers: accommodation, food, florists, photographers, celebrants, entertainers – the list goes on, by fulfilling needs and niches that are not being met right now. My goal is to facilitate the coming together of all these individual services into one big, comprehensive and well organised package” she says. After 12 months intensive research talking with industry players and prospective customers, Renee’s business Bass Coast Weddings & Events, has developed a new wedding guide portal – directly aimed at pulling together all the services and products that planning a wedding requires. Renee says “I really wanted to highlight how romantic beach and rustic country weddings can be. Local brides and girls from the city all appreciate the romanticism of the area. I have developed www.basscoastbride.com.au as a central location for sourcing the best providers in the region, thereby simplifying the process and making it much easier to navigate. Neerim South – Town of the month Blerick Tree Farm
Garden Features
Blerick Tree Farm, a thriving local nursery, has recently won the Bendigo Bank Gippsland Business Awards Online Retailing/E-Business Category. Blerick Tree farm, also winner of the SP Ausnet 2010 and 2011 Business Excellence Awards, started in 1990 in the pre-internet era and is now one of the first small businesses in regional Australia to implement cloud business solutions. As we regularly participate in high profile exhibitions and corporate events – The Master Chef Kitchen, Grand Designs Australia Melbourne Expo, Channel 9’s “The Block” and Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show – the ability to monitor stock levels and invoice on site was a high priority, explains Michelle Jones, business development manager at Blerick.
“We started looking around for a cloud based point-of-sale solution that we could use on desktop computers and ipads.” In mid-2010, Blerick Tree Farm found Vend, a cloud based point-of-sale service that enables retailers to trade even if their internet connection is down as the data automatically synchronises the next time they connect. “We primarily use Vend on desktops, but we also use it on iPad when travelling, such as recently in China and the US, so we can keep up to date with our business back home,” explains Michelle. Blerick Tree Farm uses the system to monitor stock levels, manage a large customer database, export information to Excel,
import customer data to Outlook to send emails, for all invoicing requirements and to eliminate manual backups. The team at Blerick believe that partnering with Vend was pivotal to their success in winning the recent ecommerce award. “It was terrific to be recognised as early adopters of cloud based technology,” Jones enthused. Blerick Tree Farm’s recognition continues to grow domestically and internationally. They recently attended the Victorian Government Super Trade Mission to China lead by The Premier of Victoria, the Hon Dr Denis Napthine MP and represented Victoria as a delegate for Agribusiness and support business to the Sustainable Urban Design Sector.

Marlo – Summer Holiday Town of the Month What’s on...

Things to do: ● Cruise the Snowy River Estuary on the Paddle Steamer Curlip ● Water sports galore ● Walking tracks & stunning beaches to explore ● Fish for your dinner ● Picnic on the foreshore ● Pamper yourself at Hair on Argyle ● Revitalise with a Massage www.facebook.com/marlo.vic.au
THE gateway to Victoria’s wilderness coast in Far East Gippsland, Marlo is a tranquil seaside town at the mouth of the Snowy River. The region boasts some of the most beautiful and unspoilt waterways and beaches in Victoria, including the Snowy Inlet, where the Snowy River meets the sea.
Top: Where the Snowy River meets the sea, the sheltered waters of the estuary. Circled top right: Refreshments on the new deck at the historic Marlo Hotel. Above: Marlo is famous for its sunrises and sunsets. Above circled: Dropping a line.
The sheltered waters of the estuary at Marlo allow fishing all year round and the waters produce some of the best perch and bream fishing in Australia. Marlo – and the nearby natural beauty of Cape Conran – is a haven for bushwalking, bird-watching, remote beaches and water-based activities. Marlo was once a very busy port between the 1850’s and 1890’s. Goods needed by the early settlers were shipped direct from Melbourne to the mouth of the Snowy River
at Marlo and were off loaded onto barges and towed by paddle steamer to Orbost. A replica of the paddle steamer Curlip, originally launched in 1890 and swept out to sea by flood waters in 1925 still cruises the Snowy and Brodribb Rivers. The name “Marlo” is said to have roots in tribal aboriginal language. “Marloo” meaning white clay is suggestive of the Marlo Bluff, whilst “Murloo” meaning “muddy banks” was reportedly used by the local indigenous people. Just 15km from the regional centre of Orbost, Marlo sits atop the bluffs of the mighty Snowy River and has clear views of the surrounding hills and sand dunes With no shortage of vantage points the town boasts some of Australia’s best sunrises

and sunsets. One of the best locations to watch the the sun go down out across the lower Snowy Estuary and sipping a local East Gippsland Lightfoot wine is the newly refurbished deck at the historic Marlo Hotel. The first settler to occupy the Marlo area was James Stirling around 1875. He built a bark hut on the bluff that had two rooms, bark walls, earthen floors and a shingle roof. By 1884, this structure had expanded to a 9 roomed accommodation house and in 1886 became the Marlo Hotel when a liquor license was granted. At this time the Hotel was the unofficial hub for the community. It was a general store, accommodation house and the unofficial post office, with settlers taking turns in bringing the mail from Orbost or Cunningham until 1942.
Just across the road is the Marlo General Store, stocking an excellent range of groceries – some from local producers and all your morning papers and magazines. The General Store’s ice cream sundaes are unbeatable (if you are game try the SuperNova!) and the kids will just love a creamy milkshake after a day at the beach. They also serve great coffee at the new breakfast bar. An early morning on the river starts at the Snowy River Bait and Tackle shop. They stock an extensive range of tackle, don’t be afraid to ask the simple questions about how to catch your dinner, whether its off-shore or river fishing – they can help you optimize your chances. If you miss your catch, not to worry, Lynnie’s TakeAway fish and chips is situated at the Marlo Ocean View Caravan Park.

Marlo is a town that has changed little over time, simple pleasures like strolling grassy glades, the kids building sand castles or throwing a line in from the banks of the river are all the name of the game. Perhaps the nicest thing about small towns like Marlo is that everything is easily accessible by walking. Water sports such as skiing and tubing abound on the river. You can also take a gentle kayak upstream or try the latest craze of supping (stand up paddle boarding). If you like to paddle, try dropping your kayak in at Orbost or Cabbage Tree Creek and take the slower route down stream to Marlo. The Marlo foreshore has access points along Marine Parade, take the family and a bucket and spade, the kids can play, run and swim in the river without fear of being dunked by a wave. Seals often loiter around the jetty for an easy feed, it’s a great opportunity to watch their wild antics close up. For those who like a stroll there are many newly established tracks around town and on the outskirts suitable for all fitness levels and ages. If you keep an eye out nature will reward you. Within a short trip from town you can find
the Cabbage Tree Palms or a little further down the road is Cape Conran. With the East and West Capes to explore, grab a board and catch a wave. Accommodation is varied, from simple tent sites to gorgeous self-contained units, and houses. Tabarra Lodge, with 4 self contained units, is located on the right as you come into town from Orbost, it’s set amongst beautiful garden surrounds and has outdoor BBQ facilities and a salt-water pool. You’ll notice that one of the Lodge’s hosts, Tanya, is a talented photographer, you can see her breathtaking shots of Marlo on the town’s Facebook page at www.facebook. com/marlo.vic.au. Families enjoy the quietness that can be found here. Couples indulge in the slow romantic walks along the beach. If you need to find a crowd you can, but if solitude is what you want you can find it also. Marlo is a spot on the map that deserves a visit once; you’ll want to go again. Visit the website marlo.vic.au for more on accommodation choices and what’s happening.

Financial PLEASE SUPPORT OUR TOY DRIVE!
Club Financial Services Gippsland is holding a Toy and Gift Drive this Christmas in support of the Berry Street organisation.
Improve your lifestyle by unlocking your equity DO you ever wonder how some people can afford to take that holiday, invest in property or update their home? The answer could lie in the equity of their family home. Utilising your home equity to build wealth or improve your lifestyle can be easier that you might think. It may allow you to open a variety of opportunities that would otherwise be unreachable. If you have owned your home for more than 5 years, chances are that you have an increased level of equity; question is, how will you make the most of it?
What is equity?
Equity is simply defined as the value of your assets minus your debt. For example, if your home is valued at $300,000 and you owe $200,000 on you loan, you have $100,000 in equity. Over time, as you decrease your owing amount and the value of your home grows, your equity increases.
Choosing the right loan
Whether you are renovating, upgrading or paying school fees, there is a home equity loan to suit your needs. There are a wide range of financial products available, but
how can you tell which one is right for you? One important consideration when choosing an equity loan is the amount of flexibility you require. Depending on the type of purchase, you may need to access your funds on a regular basis or maybe you will just need to withdraw lump sums. Do you plan on making regular, minimum repayments, or do you need the flexibility to repay as you wish? By sitting down with a mortgage broker you will have access to a wide range of knowledge and experience. Your Club Broker will get an understanding of your position, goals and will do all the research to find the most appropriate option for your situation. It’s important that you choose a loan you’re comfortable with, taking into account your current financial position and your ability to manage your loan repayments.
Recognising the problem GAMBLER’S Help counsellors at Latrobe Community Health Service (LCHS) can help people with a gambling problem recognise the triggers around their issue.
According to Ms Lisa Brock, Acting Manager Counselling Services at LCHS, some people do not realise the cause of pressures in their lives, which could include gambling.
They can also counsel those who are affected by someone else’s gambling and help deal with these often complex issues.
“We have had clients come in believing their behaviour is a result of depression or alcohol consumption, but sometimes they
Health
don’t realise gambling is part of the picture,” said Ms Brock. “Our counsellors can help people identify what was happening in their world before they gamble, what changes over time, and what may have led to their gambling.” Ms Brock said counsellors could also provide strategies to manage urges and thoughts. This includes self-exclusion in areas where gambling happens and ongoing support though counselling. “The Gambler’s Help counsellors have seen clients turn their lives around, and can support them on their journey,” she said. “Most importantly, they can help clients identify what other issues are in their lives and work to overcoming them.” Gambler’s Help services available through Latrobe Community Heath Service are free and completely confidential. Anyone wishing to discuss a gambling problem should contact Counselling Services at LCHS on 1800 242 696.
Some people believe their behaviour is a result of depression or alcohol consumption, they don’t realise gambling is part of the picture.

Discover South America JILL Carmody from Jetset Travel Leongatha attended the 2013 APT top achievers tour, travelling to Peru and Argentina, and discovered a feast for the senses while exploring both countries on a series of small group journeys. Jill says “I can tick two things of my must see list: Machu Picchu and Buenos Aires, however they are just two of the highlights of a very memorable journey.” “Our two week tour started in the Peruvian capital of Lima and from there we continued on to Chincheros, which is in the Andean highlands. “There we saw a weaving demonstration and were able to spend some time with the community and had the opportunity to purchase some of their handmade goods.” Jill then travelled to the Sacred Valley, a very fertile area and Peru’s food bowl. “The scenery was breathtaking and the people are warm and friendly. The knowledge gained from visiting places like this is invaluable to me as a travel agent,” Jill said. “We then took a ride on PeruRails’ Vistadome train from Ollantayambo to Machu Picchu, located over 2400 metres above sea level.” Jill explains that being among the ruins of Machu Picchu and hearing the history of the area from a local guide was an incredible experience. “From Machu Picchu the tour took us back to Cusco, a World Heritage listed city and the capital of the Inca civilisation,” she said. Cusco is dominated by striking colonial architecture, heavily influenced by Spanish conquistadors. “After exploring Cusco, we hopped aboard the Andean Explorer train to travel to Puno and the shores of Lake Titicaca.” “Lake Titicaca is the largest lake in South
America and is also the highest navigable lake in the world, with an elevation of nearly 4000 metres. Unfortunately not all tours visit Lake Titicaca, which is a shame as it was a unique experience. From there, the tour group travelled back to Lima and then on to capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires. Jill says “Buenos Aires was a completely different city compared to those in Peru, as it was quite European, in both style and lifestyle.” Time spent in Argentina included a tour of Tigre and a visit to an estancia, or ranch where they were treated to horse riding and local music, food and dance. “Before our flights home, we enjoyed dinner at Rojo Tango, which is reputed as the best tango show in Buenos Aires, which was an amazing experience. I would count it as one of the best shows I have seen anywhere in the world” she said. “The touring standard with APT is first class. They also have a second tier option for travellers, called Travelmarvel. “The hotels and tours offered at this level would surpass the standard of many offered on a similar program.” Jill Carmody said Travelmarvel offers the same services as APT Premium Tours, the only difference being the standard of accommodation, which is 4 star instead of 5 star, and some of the optional tours are at an additional cost. “We are currently looking for expressions of interest for a tour to South America in 2015,” says Jill. Anybody who is interested in travelling to South America is welcome to contact Jill Carmody at Jetset Travel in Leongatha.

Life’s a beach
Renowned for good fishing, the beach is a popular spot for visitors to the township as a Lake Victoria alternative.
GIPPSLAND has so many of Victoria’s most spectacular, pristine and unspoilt beaches we can’t possibly fit them all in here. So here’s a rundown on the most famous beaches from Central and East Gippsland. Swim, surf, fish, snorkel, dive and windsurf your way to happiness this summer! CENTRAL GIPPSLAND Ninety Mile Beach Woodside Beach is recognised as the start of the Ninety Mile Beach. The swimming beach is patrolled over summer and camping is available in the caravan park, adjacent to the beach. Seaspray Beach Seaspray is known for its great fishing and swimming beach. Surf lifesaving patrols during the summer peak periods provide the perfect environment for families. Camping is available adjacent to the beach.
Golden Beach Famous for its surf fishing, the Golden Beach foreshore is a scenic lookout over the Ninety Mile Beach. Spot oil production platforms from the beach at night. During the day, head six kilometres down the beach from town to see what remains of the shipwreck Trinculo. Free camping is available in 20 campsites within the Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park nearby. Loch Sport Beach Loch Sport beach is accessible by causeway from the township.

EAST GIPPSLAND Lakes Entrance Beach Access to the Ninety Mile Beach can be gained by crossing the footbridge at Lake Entrance from the main street. The Main Beach is patrolled during summer school and public holidays. Lake Tyers Beach Lake Tyers beach is a 10-minute drive from Lakes Entrance and is popular with families who prefer the calmer waters of the lake as well as the beach. Lake Tyers Beach is not patrolled. Cape Conran Coastal Park Pearl Point Cape This beach is often rough and is recommended only to experienced surfers when conditions are right. It is never patrolled and is excellent for surf fishing.
East Cape This beach is favoured by families and is often calmer than surrounding beaches as it is protected by the East Cape. The shallow waters provide for safe swimming and the rocky cape is excellent for snorkelling. This beach is not patrolled. West Cape Popular with surfers and those keen on catching a decent wave. The Salmon Rocks area is popular with locals and visitors alike for its good swell and protection from certain winds. Abalone diving and snorkelling are very popular at both beaches. A good place to wander along the rocks. This beach is not patrolled. Croajingolong National Park Thurra Campground Beach This is a beautiful, long sandy beach with dunes along the river and plenty of rocks to explore between the campground and Point Hicks Lighthouse. This beach
is remote and not patrolled. Mallacoota Bastion Point Beach This is a very popular sheltered beach and is ideal for surfing. It is only a short drive from Mallacoota and is patrolled in the summer months. Betka Beach A sheltered beach beside Betka River that is perfect for children. The beach also has excellent picnic facilities. The beach is not patrolled. Quarry Beach A rugged beach edged by colourful rock strata where snorkellers search for abalone. The beach is not patrolled. Secret Beach Exactly what its name suggests − a peaceful beach of clean, pure sand accessible only by foot. The beach is not patrolled.

3rd WEEK
Sow bush beans Prepare areas for cabbages, Sow cabbage seed cauliflowers, etc. Keep tomatoes pruned Make last sowings (3-4 main shoots is enough) Make final sowings of climbing beans Sow carrots and parsnips Plant potatoes
of sweet corn
Sow celery
4th WEEK Sow silver beet Sow beetroot
AS the warmer days become more frequent you should start to see more results in the garden. Tomatoes will be making good growth and you may be fortunate to have small tomatoes on some of your plants. Continue sowing beans and lettuce every ten days or so and be sure to plant seeds of cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli now for late January/February transplanting. Planning ahead will help ensure a continuous supply of vegetables throughout the year. Even though we have had some good rainfalls in many areas it is wise to pay attention to soil moisture levels as setbacks will slow your plants down and in some cases will make them ‘go to seed’ early.
and ‘stringy’. Give it a go if you like a challenge and only harvest the stalks as you need them. Tomatoes also need consistent watering. If the soil varies from wet to dry you may end up with ‘blossom end rot’. This is caused by ineffective calcium uptake by the plant from the soil and is characterized by a black patch on the base of the tomato. The easiest remedy to keeping the soil moist is mulch. Baled sugar cane mulch, straw, etc. is readily available from garden centres, produce stores, hardware stores, etc. There are also many sources of mulch around us. Grass clippings, leaves, cardboard, old cotton clothes, towels,

Sow radishes. Very
easy to grow and ready in a few weeks. Sow broccoli and cauliflower seed Sow cucumbers
Locally owned
Fast maturing vegetables like zucchinis could still be planted. They would be starting to yield when earlier plants were starting to get a bit overgrown and ‘tired’.

Cut jeans through at the crotch and any other material into strips and lay it down each side of the rows or just cut into pieces and cover any bare soil. If you feel the old clothes are unsightly just cover them with a layer of grass clippings.

jeans and hessian sacks all make effective mulch. Sounds a bit bizarre but these are all natural materials which will ultimately rot and become food for the soil.
