Music on the Green March 9th, 10.30.am-dusk, Sale Botanic Gardens THE 2nd ‘Sale Music Festival & Picnic On the Green’, set in the beautiful Sale Botanic Gardens, is a free, family friendly event. The event was a huge success in 2013 and the organising committee is hoping to make the second festival bigger and better with loads of local talent performing on the day. The highly successful children’s music workshops will be enhanced with not only creative music based activities but also some art related opportunities. One of last year’s festival favourites Joel Spence is making an encore performance and Katie Marie, a 16

year old up and coming solo artist from Newborough, will be playing some country favourites. The fantastic five piece Amnesia Blues Band will be performing and locals the Jordy McMillan trio will play a brand new set this year.

This is just a sample of the line up that spans a wide spectrum on genres. If the Festival continues to be well received it will become a permanent calendar fixture for Sale.

Festival newcomers, local thrash metal band Anient – winners of the ABC Exhumed Gippsland finals, will also be performing. Circled: One of last year’s festival favourites Joel Spence is making an encore performce. Right: A shady spot under the trees.

Unrivaled Open Air Cinematic Experience

THE Victorian Coalition Government is investing $28,000 from its $1 billion Regional Growth Fund to buy a new digital projector for the Tidal River Open Air Cinema. Deputy Premier and Member for Gippsland South Peter Ryan said the new equipment would be used by East Coast Cinemas Pty Ltd (ECC) to provide a modern tourism experience for visitors of Wilsons Promontory National Park. Mr Ryan said Parks Victoria had an agreement with ECC enabling them to screen the latest films for patrons of the Tidal River Open Air Cinema. “Feature films are no longer made on 35mm reel and are now available in digital format only, which has made ECC’s current projection equipment out-of-date,” Mr Ryan said. “This funding will allow ECC to purchase new projection equipment and once installed, ECC can continue to run a normal screening season. “The improvement in film quality may also result in an increase of overall visits to the area which in turn will boost the local economy.” Mr Ryan said ECC had been the cinema operator for more than 40 years, providing holiday makers with evening entertainment throughout that time.

“In the peak holiday period Tidal River has a resident camping population of at least 2,000 people and the area is visited by more than 7,000 holiday makers during the season,” Mr Ryan said. “In addition, Tidal River is a regular school camp destination with up to 400 students per week attending camps with ECC’s screenings often a popular part of the camps. “Importantly, the cinema also serves the local primary and secondary schools.” Mr Ryan said ECC would create a website about the Open Air Cinema that would link to and from the Parks Victoria website and Twitter and Facebook pages and could be viewed via mobile phone. “East Coast Cinemas is confident this will give the company more penetration into the area creating even more visits to the cinema and the region,” Mr Ryan said. “The Coalition Government is pleased to support this $38,000 project through its $1 billion Regional Growth Fund with ECC tocontribute the balance of $10,000. Campers at Tidal River get to watch the latest film releases in stunning surrounds.

PROM COAST DISCOVERY TOUR The trip will go for 3.5 to 4 hours (depending on the wind and also if we stop to play with dolphins along the way!). The cost is $120 per person and we can take a maximum of 6 and can only run with a minimum of 4. The plan would be to leave from Port Franklin, but we could suss out Yanakie and see where we could pick up from there if that is more convenient for your guests. Generally we would plan to cruise out through Corner Inlet along the Prom coast past Rabbit Island, 5 Mile Beach, Sealers Cove and into Refuge Cove. We would stop at Refuge Cove and those wanting to can disembark and have a wander around the cove. The only time we would have to change the course, is in an easterly wind. This makes the seas out to Refuge Cove too rough for the safety of the passengers. In this case, we would tour around the coast inside Corner Inlet and up around the islands to Port Albert. Along the way we would find some beach or other to have a look around. Either trip provides amazing photographic opportunities and we are always happy to stop at passengers requests for photos. Bookings are essential as we also run the boat on high speed tours in Melbourne on weekends and holidays. We are very flexible and will work in our bookings to suit the needs of your guests. We will do our very best to fit in a tour to suit your guests length of stay in the area. We also run 45 minute high speed boat runs across corner inlet ($75) and teach kiteboarding at shallow inlet, sandy point ($150 per 2 hour lesson).

100 WOMEN, 100 BROOCHES, 100 STORIES

A SURVEY EXHIBITION OF THREE DECADES OF PRINTS BY RAYMOND ARNOLD

8 February - 6 April

This exhibition is supported by Visions of Australia, an Australian Government program supporting touring exhibitions by providing funding assistance for the development and touring of Australian cultural material across Australia.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor: 100 Women 100 Brooches 100 Stories celebrates the achievements of notable professional women in Australia. Inspired by the old Tinker Tailor rhyme – which lists male held occupations – artisan invited eminent jeweller and history-enthusiast, Dr Dorothy Erickson, to select 100 prominent Australian women. These leading figures became the inspirations for which 100 of Australia’s finest women jewellers, ranging from emerging to established, were invited to create a brooch inspired by one of their stories.

Raymond Arnold is a widely acclaimed Australian printmaker. This survey exhibition of the artist’s work spanning over three decades, explores his interests in the role of artist as the activist, the artist as a participant in the landscape and in society, and that of the artists as story-teller.

Contemporary Art Tasmania is supported by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its principal arts funding body, and by the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, an initiative of the Australian, State and Territory Governments, and is assisted through Arts Tasmania by the Minister for the Arts.

Jindivick

Jindivick Sculpture Show May 10th – 25th

Creative Jindi Gem

The Jindivick Sculpture Show has been displaying local, national and international artists works for over 10 years now. The town is transformed for a few weeks as sculptures take over the main street, gardens and surrounding cafes. This year the sculptures will then travel to Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort to be displayed amongst the stunning Snow Gum forests and Alpine Heathlands around the village.

Jindivick, a little known treasure in West Gippsland, is bursting with creative energy. There are two fabulous eateries, an antique store and gallery, exceptional nursery and gift shop and inspiring views from Westernport bay to Mt Worth. Stray a little further out of town to explore open artist studios and nature walks. There’s so much to experience it might be worth your while to stay the weekend! Keep up to date at www.jindivick.org.au

Stop Fishing Shop!

Live Bait, Sandworm, Shrimp, Rods, Reels, Tackle & Accessories

Angling for a feed... THE fish are biting at Lakes Entrance and surrounds and after a quick chat with local fishing legend Ross Day of Riviera Bait supplies, Gippslander learned that there’s plenty to look forward to for anglers heading to East Gippsland. The flathead are out in force right now and anglers are getting great results with bluebait and the Hard Body Biggest Berkeley Bindi Eye blade 4.6 grams. Trevally are being landed from the jetty at Cunningham and there are some nice King George whiting being weighed at Barrier Landing. The Prawns are massive and will run for a few months yet, pippis are the go for bait with 5 or 6 kilos being taken off the top of the water in the Channel. There’s plenty of crab on the go as well. It’s abundant fishing in and around Lakes now. Get down there and bag a few.

Health

Helping the local community Community members in Sale and Bairnsdale seeking help to manage or kick a gambling problem can speak to a local counsellor who understands their situation. Latrobe Community Health Service Gambler’s Help Gippsland counsellor Elly Bos, who is based in Sale, has nine years’ experience in the counselling field. “In smaller communities, it can feel like admitting our problems leaves us feeling vulnerable about ‘who knows’,” said Ms Bos. “The Gambler’s Help service is confidential and can be as simple as self-exclusion information and support, to ongoing counselling as a means to understand and overcome the urges that make up the problem gambling behaviour.” Ms Bos said the Gambler’s Help service provides support and guidance to those struggling with a gambling problem, or those who are affected by the behaviour of someone close to them. “This support can also include a referral to our financial counsellor for issues with debt,” she said. “Gambling can be fun, or it can turn lives upside down. There’s fantastic help for gambling problems at LCHS.

“I want to help provide a safe environment where people with, or affected by, a gambling problem can discover they are not alone and there are ways to make the changes they want to see in their lives.”

Elly Bos is the Gambler’s Help Gippsland counsellor for the Wellington and East Gippsland Shires. To make an appointment to see a Gambler’s Help counsellor, phone LCHS on 1800 242 696.

Australians in the dark over data

Business

Optus research shows 27% have no idea what their data allowance is

IT seems Aussies are in the dark when it comes to knowing just how much data they can download from the internet on their mobile phone without blowing their limit, with Optus research uncovering that 27% of us have no idea exactly what we get1. Optus research shows 36% of people are concerned about mobile data, believing their activities will exceed their allowance, while 30% are concerned they’ll run out of data before the end of the month[1]. Clearly, Aussies need a helping hand when it comes to the topic of data. Ben White, Vice President of Mobile Marketing at Optus said, “More and more things can be done on our phones. Phones are now a music console, a wallet, a shopping catalogue and a street directory. These things use data, and now with tools such as usage alerts and fairer pricing on excess mobile fees, people are freer to use their phones for more and more things.” “It seems Aussies aren’t using their data allowance to its fullest and we think this is because they are scared of going over their limit. To help customers understand their data usage so they can get the most of their plan, we have provided the below guide on what you can do with one gigabyte of data.”

Aussies aren’t using their data allowance to its fullest and we think this is because they are scared of going over their limit.

You can do all of this with around 1GB

customers with My Plan, which helps prevent bill shock and encourages customers to use their mobile phones with confidence,” said Mr White.

● Send 100 emails with attachments ● Visit 100 web pages ● Upload 50 posts or photos to social media ● Steam 90 mins of videos ● Stream 90 mins of music ● Use GPS navigation or 60mins ● Video call for 30 mins ● Download 17 apps or games

“Optus understands why some people find data allowances confusing. We want to turn around their fear about breaking data limits. At Optus we’re putting control back in the hands of

Optus customers don’t need to worry about going over their data limits. Optus My Plan helps to eradicate bill shock and encourage customers to use their mobile phone with confidence. With Optus My Plan, if you do go over your data allowance, we simply give you more data for a fair price, usually $10 for another 1GB. [1]This study was conducted online among a representative sample of Australians aged 18-64 years. The sample was 1,260 respondents, distributed throughout Australia including both capital city and non-capital city areas between 26th and 28th August, 2013.

Finance & Business

Improve your lifestyle by unlocking your equity DO you ever wonder how some people can afford to take that holiday, invest in property or update their home? The answer could lie in the equity of their family home. Utilising your home equity to build wealth or improve your lifestyle can be easier that you might think. It may allow you to open a variety of opportunities that would otherwise be unreachable. If you have owned your home for more than 5 years, chances are that you have an increased level of equity; question is, how will you make the most of it?

What is equity?

Equity is simply defined as the value of your assets minus your debt. For example, if your home is valued at $300,000 and you owe $200,000 on you loan, you have $100,000 in equity. Over time, as you decrease your owing amount and the value of your home grows, your equity increases.

Choosing the right loan

Whether you are renovating, upgrading or paying school fees, there is a home equity loan to suit your needs. There are a wide range of financial products available,

but how can you tell which one is right for you? One important consideration when choosing an equity loan is the amount of flexibility you require. Depending on the type of purchase, you may need to access your funds on a regular basis or maybe you will just need to withdraw lump sums. Do you plan on making regular, minimum repayments, or do you need the flexibility to repay as you wish? By sitting down with a mortgage broker you will have access to a wide range of knowledge and experience. Your Club Broker

will get an understanding of your position, goals and will do all the research to find the most appropriate option for your situation. It’s important that you choose a loan you’re comfortable with, taking into account your current financial position and your ability to manage your loan repayments.

Call us on 03 5175 0411 for your obligation free appointment. As your local mortgage broker, we are happy to review your home loan with you or answer any questions you may have. Please feel free to give us a call on 03 5175 0411 or email us at admin@gippsland.clubfs.com.au.

Howdy Folks! Hope ya’ll staying cool this hot Feb. Lots of folks realize that we sell Indian Myna Bird Traps and we want to thank each and every one of you that are assisting with this very important project. We’ll rid Australia of this pest one bird at a time! As you can imagine this is a learning curve and we’ve found that the odd Blue Tongue Lizard has found their way into the cage. Our Myna Guru, Harry Hof (51456379) has the answer to this dilemma and it is easy. Cut out three adjacent vertical wires on the bottom panel of both chambers. This will leave a 25ml X 100ml slot that ‘Bluey’ can exit. Now, for those of you that haven’t heard of these, here’s a quick history. Harry Hof and the Maffra Landcare began this project after hearing of its success in Canberra, and its spreading right throughout our district and beyond, so please do come see them here anytime you like, or you can contact Harry on harryhof@aapt.net.au. We will be looking forward to your help!

This week we had three folk come in rapid succession all wanting I.D of the exact same plant, so I thought if three came in, there must be a few of you with this in your garden. It is a deep-rooted perennial growing to about one metre. The fragrant, Trumpet Flowers open late in the day and close in the morning. They can be pink, white, crimson, or any combination on the same plant! It is called Mirabilis Jalopa. Common names are: 4 O’clocks, Marvel of Peru and Gentleman Flowers – the last because they bring joy when they come to visit but then leave in the morning, (I love that.) Anyway, they can be invasive and some call them a weed, but they are striking. ✔

Treating addiction the easy way

IT doesn’t matter what you’re addictions are – hypnosis can help you kick your reliance on food, alcohol, drugs, smoking and much more. It’s a proven therapy designed to help break negative patterns of behaviour.

Hypnosis is also a tremendous help with losing weight and keeping it off and has been proven to be 30% more effective than just dieting. Medical professionals have speculated that Hypnosis helps people who are hanging onto the extra

weight or overeat for psychological reasons rid themselves of the need and making it much easier for them to lose the weight. It can also be effective in treating stress, anxiety, pain and all manner of behavioural problems. The US Federal definition of hypnosis is: Bypassing the critical factor of the mind and the establishment of collective thinking.
