Chris’s work has appeared in many major curated exhibitions and is part of a large number of public, private and corporate collections.

This travelling exhibition has been co-developed by the Gippsland Art Gallery and Manly Art Gallery and Museum.

Applications close Feb 1st SUNDAY 9th March 2014 will see the Sale Botanic Gardens come alive with entertainers and performers at the second Annual Sale Music Festival Picnic on the Green.

The first incarnation of this event in March 2013 featured performers from throughout Gippsland and was a tremendous success.

The Sale Music Festival Committee is now putting the call out for performers to register their interest in performing in this year’s event.

The 2013 Festival attracted over 1,000 people to the Green and created a wonderful opportunity for

local performers to showcase their talent to a large audience.

This is a true family event with a variety of free kids musical activities running alongside the live entertainment March Sat 8 and will set the Sale Botanical gardens alive.

To register your interest, simply fill out an application and return to the Sale Music Festival committee.

Ride the Pony for a great cause

March Sat 8th and Sun 9th

THE Willow Grove Riding Club is conducting its Annual Port Albert to Rosedale Heritage Trail & Packhorse Ride on the Labour day weekend, March 8th and 9th.

The aim of the ride is to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation.

This year’s event will be their fifth ride and is dedicated to recently lost and highly valued member and friend, Rhonda Lynch.

At approximately 78km’s the ride is broken into two parts over a Saturday and Sunday.

The ride starts out from the Port Albert Racecourse on Saturday morning and Saturday night camp with dinner will be at Stradbroke.

Leaving early Sunday morning, riders

follow the trail down to Rosedale, where a parade takes place in the Rosedale gardens followed by an Auction at 3pm, the highlight listing being a trained pony! You can see pictures of the Pony in training on the Trail Rides Facebook page, see below.

All funds raised over the weekend go to the Leukaemia Foundation and the club is hoping for some big donations this year.

THE 30th annual Kilcunda Lobster Festival is on again this Australia Day. It’s the village’s major fundraising event and will take place on the foreshore area.

The Lobster Spinning Wheel, operating between the hours of

10am and 3pm, is one of the major draw cards. The prize for winning ticket holders is a freshly cooked lobster and as the the wheel is spun around every five minutes – the odds being a winner are excellent.

The festival also

The main arena buzzes with various horse events such as Show Jumping, Galloway Pony & Hack riding, a Fun Ring for the kids, Miniature Ponies, Shetland Ponies, Harness, Pintos,Pony Club, Clydesdales and Stock Horses. The "Cattle Spectacular" is a great success every year with many entries from near & far. Mr Robert Greaves entertains kids of all ages with his potting wheel and his free "Big Draw" activity. The main activity in the main pavilion is, of course, the Art, Craft, Cooking, Produce, Flowers, Photography etc which is on display and is judged, with prizes going to the most successful entries. Take a wander around the Showgrounds and you will find food stalls, amusements and showbags as well as all the activity of the animals and their owners.

Stony Creek Rodeo on again!

STONY Creek Rodeo, at the Stony Creek Racing Club between Leongatha and Meenyian on the South Gippy Highway, scored a nomination for South Gippsland Event of the year 2012.

In 2014 they’ll be building on their already

excellent reputation and consolidating a place on the shire’s event calendar, with a show that is set to be even bigger and better than previous years.

Last year’s Rodeo saw 4,000 spectators come through the gates and a big crowd is expected this year with gates opening at 12noon. The Slack events are up first and the full Rodeo event under lights commences at 7pm.

Fun and games in the afternoon include sheaf tossing, dog jumping and sheep dog trials by the Beloka Kelpie Stud, whip cracking demonstrations, a bucking bull and much more before the full rodeo show in the evening.

Activities for the kids include games, jumping castles, animal farm and a bucking bull for the young at heart or people who think they have a young heart.

There will be a bar and food outlets in operation and campsites are available with shower facilities.

Promises to be a great day and night out!

Getting Down to Business is an innovative new program for young people aged 16 – 25 years with a passion for enterprise – whether they’re looking to kick start their business idea or take their venture to the next level, Getting Down to Business will help transform your ideas into reality.

Getting Down to Business is part time – but it’s not like going to uni, secondary school, or TAFE. It’s not a one-size fits all initiative. If you are studying, running or developing your own business, working or have other commitments, the program can be tailored to meet your needs.

You won’t have to pass tests or sit exams. Your success will be how Getting Down to Business helps you start, build and grow your own enterprise. Forty young people will be selected for the 2014 program that will run from March to November 2014.

Participants will learn the ins and outs of starting and

growing an enterprise through hands-on coaching and mentoring from experts and each other. You’ll be able to share ideas, knowledge and experiences and make valuable network connections.

Getting Down to Business is an initiative of the Victorian Government, delivered by Enterprising Partnerships. The program will be held annually, beginning March 2014.

Getting Crabby FROM ROB WARD

WHILE some people love angling and pursue their craft with a passion there are others who love their seafood from nets and off the ocean floor.

Crabs fit the bill nicely and are fairly easy to catch all year around in Lakes Entrance and surrounding locations.

Sand crabs are pesky and plentiful, but definitely finite, don’t exceed your limits. With a good recipe they can make some fantastic meals.

The kids will squeal as you land them, but there’ll heaps of fun all around.

Crabbing (Jetties and Surf) Crabbing is a popular way to have a delicious seafood meal at low cost. Sand crabs are the bane of any angler’s life as they seem to appear in their millions as soon as there is any bait around and strip it from the hooks with impunity. Only the clumsy crabs get tangled in a hook and line every now and then.

Drop Nets: First thing is to buy a proper net. These should have natural fibre netting and not the plastic netting. Many of these crab nets are lost every year on snags. Natural fibre nets on steel hoops snagged on the bottom will break down. The

fibre rots and the steel corrodes. The synthetic plastic nets create a hazard for other animals and are just another source of snags for fishermen.

Tie some meat, like fresh chicken as bait into the center of the smaller hoop and throw it off a jetty.

The popular crabbing jetty is the Sandblasting Jetty on Bullock Island, Lake Entrance. It has strong currents and is right in line with the lakes opening to the sea, so there are plenty of crabs lurking around. Just throw it far enough to clear any snagging the jetty might cause, wait a while and pull in the haul. Try other jetties, but be careful of your fellow fishermen who may not appreciate big nets being chucked in around their lines.

Cooking crabs at Lakes Why not cook them on the spot as many accommodation providers don’t like you doing it on their premises.

Surf Netting Buy a fish keeping net and a net used for landing fish (coarser netting though will mean less tangles). Put the meat (old fish heads or carcasses will do e.g. left over chicken) into the fish keeping net and take it a little way into the surf (waist deep is enough, do not go in too far – these waters

Cooking Tip Cooking Flathead Flathead is best suited to cooking methods that maintain moisture such as poaching, steaming or baking.

When grilling or barbecuing, it is best to use a marinade to lock in moisture and avoid it drying out. A simple marinade can be made by combining a lime juice, chopped coriander, garlic, a little olive oil and a good pinch of salt and pepper.

THE 19th Annual Bruthen Blues & Arts Festival is set to showcase an amazing line-up of serious Blues musicians, a family-friendly atmosphere, a colourful market and plenty of kids activities this Feb. Leading the bill is Geoff Achison & the Soul Diggers, proponents of red hot blues and soul. A highly regarded singer, songwriter and guitarist, Geoff and his band present a show that is rich in blues history yet irresistibly danceable with heartfelt soul, rockin’ rhythms and contemporary, funky grooves.

Other artists include Lachy Doly Group, Blues Mountain, The Fret Drifters (USA), Zevon & the Werewolves of Melbourne, Claude Hay, Hey Gringo, Salty Dog, Zucchini Clan, Nicki Moffat Band, First Tuesday Blues Club, Dirty Souls, Mark McCord & Friends, Matt Katsis, Cookies & Cream, and East Gippsland Brass band.

The Festival Program kicks off with the Friday night Jam Competition, which is always popular. During the day on Saturday the shady Main Street Gardens will come alive with free music, buskers, market stalls and workshops.

This year the Free Music Stage on Saturday 15th February will feature the competition final of the International Musicians Challenge, a music exchange with Southern

Oregon which will send Australian musicians to the USA to perform their music at a number of small festivals and venues. This is a fantastic opportunity for solos and duos to compete for an amazing experience. The other half of the exchange brings a duo from the USA, the Fret Drifters, to perform at the Bruthen Festival this year.

On the Saturday night there are two venues to choose from, the laid back and family friendly Blues Cafe at the Hall, and the Big Blues Bash party at the Bruthen Inn Hotel.

The free music and market continues on Sunday in the Main Street, along with the ever popular Duck Race on the Tambo River. The Festival winds up with the Blues Recovery on Sunday afternoon at the Bruthen Inn Hotel.

The Full Festival Weekend Pass is only $70, and this gives you access to all venues and all workshops over the entire weekend. Workshops include; harmonica for beginners, ukulele for beginners, blues guitar and song writing workshops.

Festival season on my mind

BREAK out the picnic hamper and dust off the camping chairs, festival season is fast approaching.

And the good news is, you don’t have to travel beyond Gippsland to get your fill.

The season has kicked off with the Lyrebird Arts Council’s Summer of Soul Festival, held at picturesque Mossvale Park near Leongatha, with plenty of world-class acts.

The Basics (featuring Wally De Backer, more commonly known as Gotye), American soul artist Lee Fields and his band The Expressions, and nine-piece soul band Clairy Brown and the Bangin’ Rackettes kept the joint jumping on the 4th of January.

Upcoming Events For the first time, the Mingling Waters Music Festival, featuring local, indigenous and visiting artists, will be held on 18 and 19 January at the Mingling Waters Waterfront

Wilderness Retreat in Nowa Nowa.

The festival’s impressive line-up includes blues artist Fiona Boyes, Yolngu songstress Gambirra and the woman described as “possibly the blackest white woman since Janis Joplin”, Marisa Quigley.

Other acts include Charlie Campbell, local bands The Dirty Souls, Twisted Hippies and The Pirates of Funk, plus the World Percussion Ensemble and the Nowa Nowa.

The Bruthen Blues and Arts Festival, now in its 19th year, markets itself as the biggest little blues festival and is basically a big community party. Events and activities take place all weekend (14-16 February) and include a street parade, several music stages and activities for all ages.

The Paynesville Music Festival is scheduled for 21-23 February and we hear it’s got something to suit everyone.

The town’s major community event, it’s got all bases covered with a floating stage, performances in commercial venues and street busking.

The Boolarra Folk Festival, held in the township’s central parklands, takes place on 1 March and about 5000 people rock up every year for eight hours of music, eclectic market offerings, a healing tent, kids’ activities and more. The Boolarra Folk Festival is four-time winner of the Latrobe City Best Event People’s Choice awards.

To coin a phrase, Name That Point...

Name That Point is a new and innovative Victorian Government and VicHealth campaign designed to spark a frank and open discussion about alcohol consumption levels.

Running across the summer months, the Name That Point campaign invites Victorians to win $5,000 by naming the point at which clear thinking turns into more drinking, headaches, empty wallets – and worse. Weekly winners will share in cash prizes and an overall winner will be announced at the end of summer.

While aimed at young people aged between 16 and 29 years, all Victorians are invited to Name That Point and discuss alcohol and its place in our wider community online, at www.namethatpoint. com and www.facebook.com/ namethatpoint

Victorian Coalition Government has provided VicHealth with $2.6 million to develop and run an alcohol cultural change project, which is a key initiative of the government’s Reducing the alcohol and drug toll: Victoria’s plan 2013-2017. The Name That Point campaign is the first phase of the project and the learnings from this phase will help inform phase two later in 2014.

“Alcohol is widely promoted and available in our community, and many young people grow up believing that drinking excessively is a rite of passage. Having a drink or two is fine, but at times drunkenness is condoned – and sometimes even elevated to hero status,” MsWooldridge said.

how to run their lives. It actually invites Victorians to tell us how they’d like our community’s relationship with alcohol to change. And we know that we’re ready for a change: a 2013 Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education national poll found that 75 per cent of Australians believe we have a problem with excessive drinking.

“It’s about having an open and honest discussion about levels of alcohol consumption and informing people so that they can make an informed choice about their drinking.”

The holiday season can propel some to escapism through gambling.

“They can also help families who are affected by someone’s gambling problem.”

Ms Brock said people should always remember to gamble responsibly.

“Gambling is meant for entertainment, not gain,” she said.

“It is tempting to try and ‘earn’ money spent over the holidays back by gambling, but often this ends up being more expensive than you would expect.”

Gambler’s Help services available through Latrobe Community Heath Service are free and completely confidential.

Vegetables should be romping along by now. If you are just starting out January is a good month as the days are warm and sunny and the nights are normally warmer, giving us good growing conditions.

FURTHER NOTES Seed of parsley, radishes, silver beet and carrots can be sown any time. Check carrot varieties for the most suitable one to sow for January. Carrot seed is best sown mixed with pepper as ants love it and what might look like poor germination is more likely to be ‘stolen’ seed!

Mildew can be a problem on pumpkins, zucchinis, cucumbers, etc. at this time of the year. Many organic growers use a spray of 10%

milk in water. I can’t vouch for it as I haven’t tried it, but it is very cheap to make. An open, sunny spot is a good prevention method, otherwise us a fungicide.

The ubiquitous white butterflies always know where to find your cabbages, cauli’s, etc. Planting ‘daisy’ type plants in and your vegies is a good practice as the daisies will be good host plants for tiny predatory wasps that will parasitise the caterpillars.

They are also good host plants for ladybirds whose larvae can

Caterpillars can also be controlled with ‘Dipel’. This is a bacteria spray that is death to caterpillars but is harmless to birds, animals and us humans.

If you only have a few susceptible plants you could cover them with fine mesh netting or an old net curtain. Hold the netting away from the plants with a few small sticks so the butterflies can’t lay their eggs through the mesh. Weigh it down at the edges with some soil or stones.

in the soil is very important at this time of the year as irregular watering will lead to stunted growth and conditions such as ‘blossom end rot’ on tomatoes.

Blossom end rot is characterized by black patches on the base of the tomato which expand before rot sets in. Good soakings at the roots are far better than light sprinklings as they encourage deeper root growth and the plants will be stronger. The humidity from overhead watering also encourages mildew.

The best way to conserve water is by mulching. Lawn clippings, leaves, straw are common mulching materials. Some less common but just as effective materials include: hessian sacks, boards laid down each side of the row, jeans (split in half), old T-shirts and towels, etc. Anything that can cover the soil to reduce evaporation can be used. Avoid plastic and metal. Mulches made from old clothes, etc will rot and become food for the soil.

CODDLING MOTH Q. Could you give me the recipe for codling moth traps?

A.”In a small jar (small Vegemite jar size is ideal) put 1 tablespoon of vinegar and 1 tablespoon of treacle. Top the jar up with water, place in an old onion bag, and hang as high as possible in the apple tree. I have done this for years and the only time I had codling moth was when I was away for a month and the jar dried out. It really works. I put them up when the first sign of flowers appear.”

Another method for dealing to codling moth. “I tried an ‘old gardeners’ remedy and I’m repeating the dose this year as it appears to have been 100% effective. I wrapped a 10cm wide bandage of ‘retired’ wind-break cloth around the trunk and completely smothered this in automobile grease (insoluble). I tried it on two trees, one large, one small, and as I say, as far as I could tell it was 100% effective.”

You must, however, remove the greased band and burn it before spring, or all you’ve done is construct a lovely cosy winter hotel for the bugs to breed in.

STEPS

1 Tie a knot in one of the ends of the pantyhose.

2 Turn the pantyhose inside out so the knot is on the inside 3 Put in a large handful of sawdust (or potting mix) at the bottom 4 Sprinkle grass seed over the top.

5 Tie another knot at the top.

6 Twist a section of the pantyhose containing the sawdust into a nose and put the elastic band around it to hold it in place.

7 Before you decorate your Grass Head friend, you’ll need to soak the head completely in water, to thoroughly saturate the contents.

8 Take it out, let it drain and then decorate! Use waterproof markers, buttons, stick-on eyes and whatever tickles your fancy.

As the grass begins to grow, make sure you keep your Grass Friend watered. This is easily done with a spray bottle. As the grass gets very long, make sure you give it a haircut now and again!

Setting up a Community Garden THE Community Based Gardening Project commenced in July 2010, 16 months after the tragic 2009 bushfires. It was designed to provide a lasting contribution by helping Victorian communities to rebuild and regenerate through sustainable gardening activities.

Out of this process the Community Gardening Manual has evolved, it has been written to assist individuals and groups planning to set up a community garden or POD food growing space. The material included and suggestions made are based upon the experiences of eleven regional Victorian communities who have each been involved in a Community Based Gardening Project between 2010 and 2013.

The communities are Beechworth, Jindivick, Toolangi and Castella, Yackandandah, Yinnar, Callignee POD, Clonbinane POD, Dixons Creek POD, St Andrews POD, Yarra Glen POD, Yea POD. POD is an acronym for Productive, Organic and Diverse, see below.

Communally Run Community Gardens It is not always necessary or even desirable for community gardens to be divided up into individual plots. If community members have ample sized gardens of their own they may simply want to spend time gardening with like-minded people, who share the same values and love of producing food.

These gardens generally have large plots that are managed communally or are perhaps allocated to groups for short periods or certain objectives.

Participants in communally run gardens could be: • Local kindergartens or primary schools who want to run outdoor gardening activities for terms 2 and 3, without the responsibility of managing the plots over summer • Local health services who want to run short courses on

health and nutrition • Local apiarists who want to place their hives in the garden for their bees to forage • Local gardeners who want to meet and share skills and knowledge • Local sustainability groups who perhaps want to set up a seed savers’ network, food swap or farmers’ market • Local food banks who want to grow fresh food for their community kitchen and

soup vans • Experimental gardeners who want to trial new ideas and unusual plant varieties.

It is possible for all of these activities to be accommodated in a communally run garden as long as they fit in with the intent and purpose of the garden. The governance and management structures need to be in place from the onset so that the basis upon which the garden is being run is clear and consistent and does not cause acrimony and confusion.

POD* Community Food Spaces For many communities, having a fully fledged community garden is the Holy Grail. However, many more communities recognise that they neither have the space, the resources nor the capacity to launch directly into a full scale community garden project.

Under the banner of this project, we worked with six communities to establish small POD community food spaces that encompassed: • Composting areas • Raised garden beds • A mini orchard with fruit trees, vines and berries, if appropriate.

These communities will continue to base their community gardening activities and workshops around their

POD community food space and perhaps sometime in the future, will be able to expand and increase their growing capacity.

The POD gardens are also a great way to set up community food spaces in a temporary location that can be moved later if needed.

Plot or allotment based community gardens are traditionally found in high density urban areas where people have limited access to a traditional backyard, or even a courtyard or balcony.

Local government, a local church or some other community group may allocate a suitable area of land to establish a community garden. This land is then divided up into small plots with each plot allocated to an individual gardener.

Usually there are long waiting lists of people hoping to acquire a garden plot. It is usual for an annual fee to be charged to cover expenses such as insurances and

the maintenance of common areas i.e. fences and sheds.

Plot holders cultivate their own plots autonomously but may also be required to participate in communal activities that maintain common areas.

Management of the garden is overseen by a committee drawn from plot holders.

More recently, these plot style gardens are being accessed by people who have backyards or gardens. Generally these newer plot holders are hoping to learn the skills of food growing from more experienced gardeners, perhaps enabling them to expand the growing opportunities in their own gardens.

Nancy’s Notes Howdy Folks!

Hope ya’ll are having a fabulous January. Wow! The weather is certainly aiding and abetting a host of pests and diseases in the garden this season! Codling Moth, Woolly Aphid, Bacterial Canifer and Blossom End Rot just to name a few.

Sometimes we know what the problem is and how to treat it. Other times we don’t. This is when your nursery man may be able to assist you. There are a few things you can do before you go to your local garden shop.

1st- in the case of trees and shrubs, have a seriously good look at the ailing plants. Does the trunk look healthy? Perhaps you could take a few photos.

2nd- a 200 gram soil sample taken at the drip line and parallel to the feeder roots will assist with P.H and drainage problems.

3rd – gather together leaves, 20cm stems, flowers, fruit and roots. Place them gently into sealed plastic bags (so as not to disturb any tiny critters) now off to your nursery and don’t put your collection on the dash board.

If your sick plant is a veggie or small plant, perhaps you could dig out one whole specimen. Anyway, with the exception of the soil sample, this same process also aids in plant identification. So don’t be afraid to ask for help.

You’ve sealed your sample bags, so your nursery won’t have to worry, and will be able to help you solve those pesky pest and I.D problems.

Park near a tree or near a post in the shade and tie your dog up. Give him enough rope so he can easily lie down in the shade under a tree or under the car.

Keeping your dog cool is vital in the hot summer weather.

Dogs can overheat quickly if precautions are not taken.

Heat stroke, sunstroke and dehydration are some of the hazards caused by the sun that are deadly to your dog.

If you have to take your dog out in the car over the summer months, make sure your errands are quick ones and you have water for him.

Follow these tips to ensure your dog copes with the heat.

Signs of heat stress are: anxiety, vomiting, loss of appetite, profuse panting, skin is warm and dry, lethargy, failing to respond to commands and physically collapsing.
