Anger Management La
Fri 13th June – 8pm to 10pm
THE Stratford Courthouse Theatre presents a new production, Unpack this! in June. Unpack This! is a comedy exploring the funnier side of anger management. From the jargon riddled politically correct language, to the antics of a social worker who can’t control his temper, Unpack This! takes a look at what happens when two social workers try to show six men how to manage their anger, with varying degrees of success. A not-to-be-missed show for anyone who has ever lost their cool,
blown a fuse, flown off the handle, gone through the roof, chucked a wobbly or just been plain angry. This show contains occasional course language.

The Pernickety Princess... AFTER the well-received production of “Alice in Gippsland”, South Gippsland Youth Theatre is in its second year of production and will be running another program this year named “The Pernickety Princess of Poowong & other hairy tails”. The theatre group is now calling for interested children aged between 8 to 15 years. As a not-for-profit organisation, fees will be kept to a minimum and the program will run Sunday afternoons from 22 June with a light afternoon tea of milo and cake provided.
Approximately 20 workshops will be included in the program and the aim of the theatre group is to provide a training and performance space for young people in the area and to encourage and inform them of theatre skills which will include performance, singing, dancing and general drama craft. It is known that drama and performance skills can enhance a child’s ability to learn and can expand social graces and build self-confidence, expression and self-respect. No prior experience is required.
More... Sundays, 22nd June to 26th October, Location: Anglican Parish Hall, Cnr. Bridge & Queen Streets, Korumburra Phone: Sidney or Leonie on 0425 714 944 A cast of approximately 20+ performers is needed. He is a Senior Member of the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia and has been actively involved with CIGRE, an international engineering organization of the power industry. Yallourn features on new album THE Bastard Children, an eclectic band out of Melbourne who describe their style as junkyard folk, old-world gypsy, ragged celtic and dirty blues, have penned a tune in their own unique style inspired by some mysterious hills around Yallourn. As part of a band initiative, The Open House Project, they asked their online community to suggest topics and ideas for songs. They picked one a week for five weeks, wrote the song, recorded it live and posted the clip one week
later to their website. The Haunted Hills area, accessed from the old road that ran up from Gunn’s Gully, outside Moe into the hills was suggested as the theme for week four. The legend of the Haunted Hills involves echoes of ghostly mobs of cattle and the sounds and evidence of an unknown drover.
5
LaTrobe Shire News One theory on the haunting is that the hills had brown coal seams that have burned out making caves underground, creating eerie sounds – spooking both cattle and men over the years. The track Haunted Hills is now on The Bastard Children’s new album Historia. Check out the video of the recording session and listen to the final track at www.thebastardchildren.com.au/ open-house.

A warmer May has extend bumper fishing... ROSS, our Gippsland Lakes Fish Whisperer, reports that the warmer temperatures we experienced in May have led to an extended high quality fishing season.

fresh white bait. Reeves Channel up past Kalimna Jetty is producing flathead, salmon and leather jacket, the best bait being prawn. The town jetties are also worth a try with garfish taking worm. The ocean is quiet at surf beach but if you work hard you may land a salmon. At Metung from the jetty in front of the hotel anglers are catching luderick at around 1 to 1.5 kilos on sandworm and weed. From the boardwalk up to Shaving point and into Lake King is good for flathead and bream on local prawn. The Tambo River has finally started to produce results from the mouth to the cliffs with black bream being caught on local prawn.
Live Bait, Sandworm, Shrimp, Rods, Reels, Tackle & Accessories
Eagle Point down to Shadoof Lodge as well as in the back waters the bream is taking local prawn, spider crabs and soft plastics. The highway bridge has perch taking green diving lures. The Nicholson River from the railway bridge and up to the poplars are good spots for bream, bait of choice being local prawn. At Paynesville the town jetties have a variety of fish, trevally, bream and luderick taking local prawn and weed. The King Street boat ramp is also worth a try. See Ross and staff at Riviera Bait Supplies for all the latest fishing info.
There is still plenty of crab and the garfish are starting in the higher reaches of the North Arm and at Wattle Point. At Lake Tyers the plastic lures are no longer working in the colder brown water but the Hobie kayak anglers fishing competition on the weekend resulted in 200 bream being caught on a catch and release basis. The main lake is the best spot for lures. Flathead and bream are in both arms taking prawn.

. Putt Putting along Lakes Entrance hosts one of the largest inland waterways in the Southern Hemisphere. Whether it be a sightseeing cruise along the majestic lakes, angling for some of the local catch or just having a swim, the lakes has it all and Blue Riviera Hire Boats know all the great spots. You can travel up the North Arm along four kilometres of peaceful waterways, winding around hills and waterfront properties. Wyanga Park Winery towards the end of the Arm is a great place to stop, relax and sample some of the great local wines this region has to offer. This cruise then takes you further up the Arm to Corners Landing before returning. The trip takes approximately 1 hour without a stop at the winery. The Gippsland Lakes are also

renowned for their varied catches including Bream, King George Whiting, Flathead, Trevally, Salmon and Tailor, just to name a few. Ask the staff to take you to where the fish are biting and catch your dinner. Other popular activities on the cruises are picnics, swimming on secluded beaches or just taking in the sights. You may even spot a few dolphins along the way. You could also head to the charming village of Metung, wander around the shops, picnic on the village green or have a counter meal at the Waterfront Hotel. A return cruise to Metung takes approximately 3 and a half hours. Another option is to take a boat out yourself and create your own adventure.
Self drive We sent one of our Gippslander team off on a first time fishing trip in Lakes last month and he was inspired to describe the experience. “It was a wonderful autumn day, the sun was shining and I was in charge of the grandkids so I thought we might as well try a spot of fishing at Lakes Entrance on one of the PutPut boats. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. “The kids were highly excited when we met Marty, the new owner of the Blue Riviera Hire Boats, to get the expedition underway.
Blue Riviera
Hire Boats Take a cruise and explore the Gippsland Lakes without the need for an expensive or licensed driver.

“As it was my first time in a boat I was very nervous but Marty explained everything to me in a friendly and easy to comprehend manner. So off we went to Kalimna to do some fishing. “The boat had plenty of room for the 4 of us and we took some lunch and snacks and plenty of borrowed fishing gear. Driving the boat was easier than I expected and we were soon at Kalimna.
Pleasure Boats: *Fishing *Max 8 people
“The sun that day was a real blessing and we fished to our hearts content for about 3 hours.
Dropping a line with the grandkids onboard is a great way to while away and afternoon.

Yarragon – Town of the Month
Yarragon Book Fair OVER the past ten years the Yarragon Charity Book Fair has become an important date on any book lover’s calendar. The fair, run jointly by the Yarragon and Darnum-Ellinbank Fire Brigades, has grown into one of the premier events of its kind. This year the Book Fair will fall on the 12th and 13th of July.

“The passion we see for books is amazing” said Yarragon Brigade Secretary and Book Fair Coordinator, Geoff Conway. “People from all over Victoria come to Yarragon on the second weekend in July to search for books that you just cannot get in the stores any more. “Ebooks and kindles don’t seem to be able to compete with the classic feel of a good hard cover.” This year the brigades have assembled a stock of over 25,000 books of every description. “Novels seem to be the favourite but we have people looking for biographies, poetry, cook books, self-help manuals and travel books.” “Our favourite part of the Book Fair is still the children’s books. The kids quickly lose themselves in the hundreds of books available with a whole room of the
Yarragon Yarragon Public Hall dedicated to them.” Stock has been donated from residents of the district and charitable groups across Eastern Victoria and the quality is amazing says Geoff. “We have many books that are virtually brand new and will be sold for a fraction of the original price.” Prices for the books are the big attraction with soft covers for $1 each, hardcovers for $2.50 and children’s books for $5 a bag or box. Doors open on Saturday morning from 9am and close on Sunday at 4pm. “Fresh stock is available on Sunday because there simply is not enough room in the hall to display all the stock we have from the start of the fair”, said Geoff. “So those coming in on Sunday morning get a fresh start.” The Yarragon Public Hall is in Campbell Street, just 50 metres from the Princess Hwy and a short walk to any number of excellent coffee shops, cafes and galleries.
25,000 books will be on sale at this years’ Yarragon Book Fair.

Yarragon – Town of the Month
New lease of life for old stager Hotel gets top award YARRAGON Station is being transformed into a thriving arts hub as the disused building gets a new lease of life under the Victorian Government’s Community Use of Vacant Rail Buildings Program. The Yarragon community will be invited to view the revamped Station after major rebuilding work is completed in late June. Plans are underway for a formal opening event in July to celebrate the tenants, the Baw Baw Arts Alliance and Yarragon and District Community Association, taking up residence in the building. The revitalised station building
will offer much-needed community meeting space as well as an art gallery, studio, local history and meeting space. Yarragon Station will be the first project completed under the Victorian Government’s Community Use of Vacant Rail Buildings Program that is breathing new life into stations across regional Victoria.
Victoria’s rail assets, and has been made possible in Yarragon by the Trafalgar and District Community Bank taking on the head lease of the building in line with the bank’s philosophy of contributing to local communities.
The project is being delivered by VicTrack, custodial owner of Yarragon Station is undergoing a make over to house the Baw Baw Arts Alliance and the Yarragon and District Community Association.
IN late May Yarragon Hotel happily announced that it has won a TripAdvisor® Certificate of Excellence award. The accolade, which honours hospitality excellence, is given only to establishments that consistently achieve outstanding traveller reviews on TripAdvisor. “Winning this award is a great boost for us and we would like to thank our staff and all of our past guests who took the time to complete the review,” said Renee Kemp, owner of Yarragon Hotel. “With this award being based on customer reviews, it’s a remarkable vote of
confidence for our business and customer service which we intend to build upon further into the future” she said. The Gippslander notes that the pub is making great use of its Facebook presence with the Tripadvisor reviews being pulled in and using the events notification function along with regular updates. The hotel is doing a great job of utilising social media.

Musical winter warmers to feed the soul BY CHERRY PRIOR YES it is tempting, now that winter has arrived, to simply pull up the doona around the ears and not emerge again until September. But let us reassure you that there’s plenty to warm the cockles of your heart if you’ll brave the bracing wind and rain to make it to a local live music venue. While winter is traditionally the “quiet season” when it comes to live music, there’s still plenty on offer. In particular, we’re pretty excited about the Sunday sessions that take place regularly throughout Gippsland. They tend to provide a warm, cruisy finale to weekends spent in the cold playing or watching local sport. One of our favourite places in The Westernport Hotel San Remo, which offers a fireside blues session every Sunday from 5.30pm. During June, the Westernport will host Paulie Bignell and the Thornbury Two, the Hornets, Jimi Hocking (aka Jimi the Human) and independent Australian musician Geoff Achison. And that’s just on Sundays. Not too far away, the Kilcunda Hotel – with what must be the best ocean view from a hotel bar anywhere – has its regulars, the Corz and Collier, appear on
Across
the first Sunday of each month. In Bruthen, the Bullant Brewery, an intimate venue kept toasty courtesy of cosy wood heating, runs an open mic and jam session that can get pretty lively on the first Sunday of each month. New on the scene, the Monkey Biz Café in Rutherglen Ave, Newborough, is fast establishing itself for providing a complete package of food, drink and live music. It often has Sunday sessions – look out for folk duo The Pegs on June 22. And at the West Gippsland Arts Centre, the Warragul Theatre Company will perform Phantom of
the Opera. The season includes two Sunday sessions.

Competitive pricing became one of Agrison’s motives; to supply Australians with value-added tractors built in conjunction with our major import partner, China which accounts for 15 per cent of total imports. The concept of Chinese tractors has naturally taken time for consumers to appreciate, acknowledge and accept. in its early days, consumers were sceptical of Chinese manufactured products, including tractors.
Today, Australia’s major import partner is China thereby allowing consumers choice, the choice to own inexpensive and value added tractors. Geelong slashing contractor Tom McBride said he bought with Agrison on good recommendations, and was very pleased with the choice. “With a five year parts warranty and back up service second to none, what more could you ask for,” Mr McBride said. Agrison distributes its products nation-wide.
Colin Walker from orange in new south Wales owns a 50 horsepower Agrison and uses his tractor for vineyard spraying, grass slashing and loading gravel. Mr Walker currently has 625 hours running time with trouble free usage “other than a bearing in the water pump”. The high degree of engineering in the four in one bucket is a stand out feature for Mr Walker and he commends the value in the Agrison product. For more information phone Agrison on 1300 651 830 or visit the showroom at 2098-2108 Hume Highway, Campellfield.

bank to see if they would lend us the money. It took a while to approve the loan but after numerous phone calls they finally said yes.
Linda explains “the idea came about 12 months ago after losing my job at another local cafe. My husband and I started looking for the right site for our own cafe business but couldn’t find one that was suitable or affordable in Lakes at the time.
“Five days after we got the loan my husband was involved in a fatal car accident and due to the nature the accident I received an insurance payout,” says Linda.

Retail Therapy in Morwell IN an inspirational and generous show of support for Morwell’s recent troubles the small hamlet of Meeniyan has taken the inititiave with the local Development Association organising a big day out in the town to support local business in their time of need.
In late April several car loads embarked on the day and by all accounts it was a very enjoyable excursion. The Morwell locals really appreciated the support and the Meenyianites had a great time and snaffled a few bargains. The outing was the brainchild of Marty Thomas, of Moo’s at Meeniyan. Marty is also the

President of the Meeniyan Tourism & Traders Association and has a good understanding of what an event like the recent Hazelwood coal mine fire can do to a town’s businesses. All of the businesses located on the main street of Meeniyan are reliant on tourist dollars and have also been affected by natural disasters. Any event driving tourists away from the hamlet directly effects the entire business eco system so they completely understood how hurtful an event like this can be.

Finance & Business
Lending & Tax Time: Jargon explained WELL, the tell-tale signs that we are near the end of the financial year are upon us! Advertisements for EOFY sales are everywhere we look, search parties for those mislaid receipts, and the usual tax time property jargon such as “depreciation” and “negative gearing” being bandied around the water cooler. Real estate at tax time has its own language and terminology which can be very confusing, particularly if you’re new to the investment process. Here’s a guide to the key phrases used at this time of year when we are thinking about your property investments, and what that means for your tax! Capital Gains Tax (CGT) A capital gain, or capital loss, is the difference between what it cost you to acquire an asset and what you received when you disposed of it. Selling assets such as real estate is the most common way you make a capital gain or capital loss. In other words, you make a capital gain when you sell a house for more than you paid for it. You pay tax on your capital gains. So, when you make money from the sale of a property, it forms part of your income tax and is not considered a separate tax. Most real estate is subject to CGT. This includes vacant land, business premises, rental properties, holiday houses and hobby farms. Your ‘main residence’ (family home) is generally exempt from CGT unless you rented it out for a time or it’s on more than two hectares of land.
If you are a property owner, capital gains tax may become an issue when you make a profit from selling your property. But there are a couple of standard exemptions which could assist. For more information, we can help you with a referral to an accountant, or visit the Australian Tax Office website. Negative Gearing The term ‘negatively geared’ sometimes causes confusion, especially among people new to the intricacies of property investing. Negative gearing occurs when the costs of owning a property – interest on the loan, bank charges, maintenance, repairs and capital depreciation exceed the income it produces. Simply, at the end of the day, the investment property in question will run at a loss and you need to make up that shortfall from your own pocket. Negative gearing can be used as an investment strategy in order to reduce your taxable income, maximising available tax benefits. If the property becomes cash flow positive (see below), this profit is added to your taxable income and you may have to pay more tax depending on the structure of your investments. Depreciation Like the name suggests, depreciation is the decrease in value of an item over time. An example of a depreciating asset is your car, which is said to reduce in value a great deal from the time you drive it out of the dealership. When it comes to investment properties, depreciation can certainly work in your favour. If your
investment property depreciates, you can claim against the decreased value of your investment. Negative gearing and depreciation allowances are popular ways to reduce your tax liability. There are various rules around this in all States, so please speak to a professional, or we can get you in touch with the experts! Cash flow positive The reverse of negative gearing, your investment property is considered to be cashflow positive if your income
generated from the property is greater than your outgoings - after you’ve taken into account tax deductions. Tax deductions include things like interest paid on your loan, depreciation, maintenance and service costs. Equity Equity is the difference between what your residence or investment property is worth and how much you owe on it. Put simply, if your property is worth $300,000 and you still owe $100,000, you have $200,000 in equity. Over time,
as you reduce the amount you owe on your home or the value of your home grows, your equity increases. Equity is a very good thing to have as it can be used to leverage further property purchases without your having to save a new deposit. Of course there are lots more real estate and legal terms you will come across at tax time and when investing in property. We recommend you seek professional advice. When do you need a Permit? Part 2
BY DAMIAN ANDERSON
Last month Damian Anderson, who draws plans and complete construction documentation, not just for houses, but for all sorts of projects wrote about permit rules for Sheds and Existing Buildings This month he’ll go into what is required for swimming pools, advertising and pergolas.
What you don’t need a building permit for: Swimming pools and spas with a depth of less than 300 mm. A masonry fence within 3 metres of a street alignment not more than 1.2 metres in height.
A non-masonry fence within 3 metres of a street alignment not more than 1.5 metres in height.
PROFESSIONAL SERVICE 6 STAR ENERGY RATINGS TOWN PLANNING APLICATIONS WILL BEAT ANY PRICE MELBOURNE TO MALLACOOTA
A fence not more than 1 metre in height when built within 9 metres of a point of intersection of street alignments.
A mast, pole, antenna or aerial: when attached to a building, is not higher than 3 metres above the highest point of the building to which it is attached, or if freestanding, is not more than 8 metres above ground level. A retaining wall less than 1 metre in height that is not associated with other building work or with protection of adjoining properties. A pergola to a domestic residence less than 20m² in floor area, not more than 3.6 metres in height, or is located no further forward on the allotment than 2.5 metres forward of the front wall of the house, and has no roof covering. A relocatable swimming pool that is erected temporarily and enclosed by barriers complying with Australian Standard 1926.1 – 1993 Swimming Pool Safety Part 1. Note, the barriers around the pool will need a permit.
A chain mesh fence surrounding a tennis court. A fence, screen or structure similar to a fence, not more than 2 metres in height and not within 3 metres of a street alignment. Advertising signs less than 3 metres from a street alignment that is not more than 1 metre in height, more than 3 metres from a street alignment that is not more than 8 metres in height, or not more than 6m² in display area. Above: Pergolas don’t require a permit if they meet certain criteria.
Nancy’s Notes Howdy Folks! June has arrived, and haven’t we had a mild start to winter, glorious sunny days and a few crisp nights. Wandering through our patch, we would like to share some fragrant treasures that surprise our guests through the cooler months. There is Luculia, Daphne, Dianthus, Winter Sweet (Chimonanthus Praecox), Wallflower, Osmanthus and early Daffodil Bulbs (Narcissus) to name just a few. These lovelies may inspire you to find a spot for one of these. Now’s the time to be adding deciduous trees, both ornamental and fruiting to your garden. Your local nursery will be happy to guide you through making these delightful choices. There are lots of edibles ready to be planted, with Asparagus, Rhubarb, Grapes and a large variety of berries in their dormant phase. With many plants benefiting from attention now, we can get our tools in tip top shape by cleaning, oiling and sharpening them, as the cool weather is the perfect time to shape those deciduous trees, shrubs and roses. Their ✔ quiet time means less stress on the gardener and plants alike. It’s also a ✔ great time to give your fruit trees and roses a lime sulphur or copper spray ✔ ✔ treatment with white oil. Plenty to keep us busy and warm. ✔ Happy Gardening, ✔ Cheers, Nancy

House & Garden
June in the vegie patch THERE’S not a lot that can be planted in June but you can spend a bit of time getting beds or areas ready for later crops. There is usually an abundance of leaves around at this time of the year. Collect them to improve your soil. Leaves are excellent ‘food for the soil’. They contain minerals and other nutrients that the trees have brought up from deep down, help to hold nutrients in the soil as they break down and they also improve the soils’ water holding capacity. If the leaves are large and you have a mower, put them in a heap and run the mower over them a few times to chop them up then dig them into your soil where they can start to working for you. If you don’t have a mower, just dig them in. Now is a good time of the year to ‘lime’ your soil. You may have heard of gardeners or farmers using lime to ‘sweeten’ the soil and effectively this is just what it does. As soils become more acidic over time minerals in the soil become less available. Lime reduces the acidity thereby ‘sweetening’ the soil. This makes nutrients that are in the soil available to plants. It has been estimated that there is millions of dollars of phosphorous ‘locked up’ in Australian soils which could be released by the application of lime Use garden lime and spread it so that the soil is white before working it in with a fork or spade. In smaller areas scratch it in with a hand cultivator. Do not use builders
ANY TIME THIS MONTH Sow broad beans, onions, lettuce, peas and radishes lime as it is “hot” and will burn plants and destroy soil life. If you like rhubarb now is a good time to prepare for it. Rhubarb will thrive in most soils but needs plenty of manure and water to provide the best stems. Mix plenty of old manure into the bed or container that you wish to use and then leave it until the roots are available. If you are using a container a 20 litre capacity bucket or box would be about a minimum. Do not forget to water as plants that dry out during growth periods will tend to be ‘stringy’. Rhubarb growers tend to prefer red stalks because they look better but well grown green stalks will still taste the same. Just add a few drops of red food colouring when you cook it if you want to enhance the colour. Questions about food growing? Email John on info@ ezy-gro.com or fax me on (03) 5127 2727. I will respond within 24 hours on weekdays and on Mondays for weekend enquiries.

Building dreams in the Valley DEBBIE and Darren Fletcher, of Standing Homes in the Latrobe Valley, are a full service builder who are making dream homes a reality for their customers.
Darren Fletcher says “I been a builder for over 25 years now and we have developed a team of reliable, high quality trades people that are absolutely invaluable in enabling us to provide a top quality product that takes into account the specific requirements that come with building in Gippsland.” “Working with a regular team goes a tremendously long way to ensuring a top notch result. Everyone cares. Everyone one knows who is responsible for what. It is a highly accountable process” he says. Wife Deb chimes in “ I really love the fact that we employ over 40 locals tradies who all use local suppliers. Not only are we building beautiful homes but we are effectively pumping money into the local economy as well. The whole process has a great synergy and
the success of Standing Homes has also allowed us to support local charity organisations and sporting clubs. It feels great to be able to contribute to our community in this way.”
The Standing Homes team has designed over 40 floor plans to choose from straight off the bat and they are all ears if you want more flexibility. They also do custom builds. Their motto is ‘your home, your way’ after all. Deb and Darren know the valley intimately and can also offer some great advice based on their years of experience as to what the best solution for your slice of paradise might be. The quality of the workmanship is on display for all to see at the display home location in Morwell. They have created a highly affordable, flexible and satisfying design and build process that is creating some beautiful lifestyle outcomes for their Gippsland clients.
NOW IS THE TIME TO PLANT FRUIT TREES Who of us doesn’t like to pick a tree ripened apple or peach and savour the flavour and freshness. Now is the time to select and plant deciduous fruit trees from fruit tree suppliers. They will have just received their new season’s stock. Here are some points to help you make your choice.
Most fruit trees need a sunny, open situation with
reasonable soil to do well. Some, such as plums, pears and quinces will do well in heavy soils while peaches and apricots will not. Wherever possible choose a sunny spot this will reduce fungus problems and ensure earlier and better ripening of fruit.
There are a lot of ‘Heritage’ varieties available.
Among them there are some beautiful apples such as ‘Pine Golden Pippin’ ‘Stayman’s Winesap’, ‘Cox’s
Orange Pippin’ and ‘Munro’s Favourite’ (a very large cooking apple). Strzlecki Heritage Apples between Warragul and Korumburra has a large range of heritage fruit trees.
A lot of peaches ripen in January so, if you go
away for holidays in January, very early or late varieties would be a better choice. There are some early peaches that ripen in December but the main varieties ripen in January and February so check ripening times if you go away during January otherwise the birds or possums will have a feast.
Your fruit tree supplier will be able to help you with information on varieties, planting, pruning and care of your new fruit trees. We wish you prosperous fruit growing!
Building a lifestyle can be a very satisifying process if you engage the right builder.
