A fifth-generation farmer, author Margareta grew up on her family’s historic dairy farm in Gippsland as the middle child of three. She completed her HSC and left Gippsland for the bright lights of Melbourne only to jump on a home-bound country train three months later muttering, ‘You can take the girl from the country, but not the country from this girl.’ She didn’t return to the city, preferring paddocks, mountains and billy-tea to pavements, tall buildings and lattes.

Yeah baby, it’s party time... Fri 4th & Sun 6th April Gippsland Vehicle Collection 10th Birthday Extravaganza WHAT better way to celebrate the birthday of an organisation dedicated to icons of the past than to recapture the spirit of one of the most iconic eras of all? The Gippsland Vehicle Collection (GVC) kicks off a weekend of birthday celebrations with a ‘60s and ‘70s party at the Maffra Memorial Hall on Friday, April 4, and they’re inviting you to dig out your old flares and platforms and entice your hair into an afro for a night of trivia,
music and dance. The GVC Rusty Rockers, featuring well-known local musicians, some of whom played in bands in the 60’s – including Geoff Stobie and Rick Dare, will have everyone dancing to favourites of the period. Saturday is a recovery day and then on the Sunday GVC will host a free community day in the grounds of the Maffra Motor Museum, where not only will there be plenty to keep the vehicle enthusiast entertained, but plenty of action for the rest of the family too. Market stalls, wine and tasting
plates catered by Glenmaggie Wines, vintage sewing machines and a fashion through the ages display will complement a pool table, jumping castle, arcade games, face painting and hands-on woodworking for the kids, and there will also be model trains, model planes, vintage machinery, Mad Max vehicles, and military vehicles. GVC president, Duncan Malcolm, said the Committee had much to celebrate from the past 10 years, and was looking forward to another productive decade to come. “In 10 years we’ve displayed more than 2500 veteran, vintage,

classic and modern vehicles and a lot of other vehicle-related memorabilia,” he said. “But beyond the facts and figures, GVC has provided an outlet for its members to build a truly solid organisation with like-minded people and create a tremendous asset for the community. It’s a great social group, and it can become allconsuming if you’re not careful! “We’ve designed the celebrations to include not only everyone who has ever been involved with the GVC, and who has supported it over the years, but also everyone
who has been meaning to come and have a look but hasn’t made it here yet.”

DO you love animals and like getting out on your bicycle in the fresh East Gippsland air? If so, Animal Aid’s Gippsland shelter is organising an event for you – a cycled ride to raise money for the shelter. Starting at Animal Aid’s Gippsland shelter at 8.30am on Sunday, March 16, at 111 Hopkins Road, Fulham, the 2014 Ride for the Animals will cover 90km (an an anticipated pace of about 20km/h) to Bairnsdale. This recreational ride winds through some wonderful scenery and will raise much needed funds for Animal Aid’s three shelters. The ride will pass through the
towns of Maffra and Stratford before proceeding along Bengworden Road to a pit-stop at a halfway point at Meerlieu. From here riders will cycle to the finish at Bairnsdale Racecourse where food, Devonshire teas, market stalls, children’s entertainment, activities, and coffee await. The event is a social ride, not a race, and will not be timed. The $30 rider fee will cover registration administration, snacks and drinks and medical support but does not cover personal and bike insurance. The first 50 people to
register will receive a Netti cycling event jersey valued at $80 for free. The fundraising component of the event stipulates that each rider is required to raise a minimum of $250 in order to participate in the ride. Each year Animal Aid East Gippsland cares for and re-homes thousands of animals – cats, dogs, pocket pets and small livestock. Jacican is a studio where food is the art form. You can visit the Jacican studio by making a group booking for any day of the week for 8 to 20 people. Jacican is the brainchild of me – Jaci Hicken and I will purposely design you a meal that highlights my food as the art form, using home grown fruit and veggies. If I can’t grow it myself, you meal will be made using local grow or raised produce from Mirboo North or the Gippsland region.

THE Fiddlehead Festival in Yinnar, central Gippsland, is a music festival with a unique difference. You get to make music – even if you have never played or sung before! As well as a concert, a country fair with a wonderful array of local art, crafts, food and produce, kids entertainment, and all the good things you would expect to find at a country festival, there are lots of music-making workshops for adults, youth and children: bathroom singers, closet strummers, funky horn-blowers and misunderstood drummers – come and do your thing. Complete and utter beginners can strum on a uke or sing in the safety of a big, friendly group. The tone-deaf and musically challenged will be in their element, safe and welcomed among some exceptional musicians and community music workshop leaders of all ages and of the highest calibre. The Festival gives concert goers the opportunity to relax,

make new friends and catch up with old. Bring along your instruments because, aside from the great range of workshops, there will be opportunities for jamming and busking. The mission of the Fiddlehead Festival is to bring people from Gippsland and all over Victoria together to celebrate the strength and resilience of community and to play, sing, share music and have fun with each other. The festival’s symbol, an uncoiling new fern frond, or fiddlehead, symbolises the return of life after fire to the community through music. The concert itself again presents a stellar Festival program of world class performers, in various genres, over two stages. It’s a real highlight of the local music calendar and one not to be missed.

Thorpdale – Town of the Month
Village of the verdant valley
Why Spuds? According to Robert Edis, Soil Scientist at University of Melbourne, Ferrosols like those of Thorpdale are old soils but still full of life.
Thorpdale
THORPDALE, a small village less than 20km south of Trafalgar in the Latrobe Valley, is famous for its potatoes and envied for its rich farmland.

Thorpdale spuds are eaten across the nation and also exported overseas, they are especially sought after for making french fires. The area’s soil is particularly rich as the town is located in a former volcanic crater. In fact farmers from other regions have actually been caught trying to boost their prices by dusting their potatoes with Red Ferrosol, which is abundant in Thorpdale (see breakout at right). History The Thorpdale district, originally named the Narracan district, was settled in the 1870s. The first settlers travelled the old Melbourne Sale Road via McDonalds Track – a former stock route that had been surveyed in 1862 through the hills from Lang Lang to Morwell Bridge. Land selection began at Narracan in 1873 reaching Narracan West in 1876. The Post Office opened on 1879 as Narracan West and was renamed Thorpdale, which means “village in a valley”, in 1884, closing in 1968. The present town of Thorpdale (situated about 2 km north of the

old town) was founded in 1888 following construction of a branch railway line from Moe. At the height of its time it was a business centre for all the farming activity that surrounded it. Much of the old town was destroyed during the large Red Tuesday (20 January 1898) bushfire that ravaged Gippsland and the Otway Ranges. New developments These days Thorpdale is attracting some exciting new business owners, no doubt due to the abundant nature of the area. One such enterprise is innovative local business, Adies Kitchen of Trafalgar South, who are creating a lot of interest with their down to the last detail function management service. Taking on tasks from design,
print and sending invites to managing the RSVPs, menu design, room décor, celebration cakes and photography – Adie’s really know their stuff. Part of the process allows clients to make food selections via an interactive visual menu which calculates cost per head on the fly. It’s a wonderful way to manage a process that can be mind bogling for a host. The team is also developing an online store that will stock an ever changing range of gourmet condiments and will offer “Dinner Party Kits” that enable anyone to become an instant gourmet cook without the hassle. The kits include prepared ingredients, a “cheat sheet” and online video tuition. The Herb Crusted Baked Salmon with Roasted Chat Potatoes,
Fried Onion, Aioli and Pickled Samphire is just one impressive example. Another new service is Short Stays Gippsland who are on a mission to provide superior accommodation for travellers to the region. Their properties, in Trafalgar, Trafalgar South and Thorpdale are in a class of their own. There is nothing else like it in the area. Short Stays locations are within 7km of each other and a similar distance from Moe to the east, or Yarragon Village to the west. To date there are ten different flavours of Hot Cross Buns posted on their Facebook page. You have to get in quick when they come out of the oven though because locals are scoffing them like there’s no tomorrow. Bushies also have a Pizza Restaurant with an extensive range of toppings and a gorgeous sun drenched deck. Their pies, pasties and sausage rolls, pastries and cakes, sandwiches and salad rolls are known far and wide for their taste, quality and generous fillings, and they also do great coffee! This little gem of a bakery is open every day except Sunday and has been well rewarded by locals with a Latrobe City Business Tourism Association Award for Customer Service. At a national level Bushies has taken out the first prize for Australia’s Best Pie Competition – Best Seafood Pie and in the Great Aussie Pie Competition of 2012 they won the
Gold Medal for their Drover’s Pie, the Silver Medal for their Plain Steak Pie and another Silver Medal for their Chicken Carbonara Pie. This kind of creativity needs to be rewarded with a taste test! Fisherman running hot on Gippsland Lakes ROSS Day at Riviera Bait Supplies in Lakes Entrance is just a tad excited about the red hot fishing opportunities that continue to run in the Gippsland Lakes at the moment. When Gippslander spoke to him just prior to the long weekend in March there were 14 fishing clubs, mainly from Melbourne, descending on the town to partake in the “Austackle Flathead Fishing Classic”. The event was presented by the Gippsland Lakes Fishing Club for the first time, with the help of major sponsors ‘Austackle’, and they’re hoping it won’t be their last. There will be over $6,000 worth of prizes on offer with the first prize being a whooping $1,000 for the longest Flathead caught anywhere in the Gippsland Lakes or Lake Tyers estuaries. Luckily the Flathead fishing right now is excellent and Ross has stocked up on fresh Bass Yabbies, Blue Bait, glassies squid, anchovies and live shrimp, crab and prawns for anglers to choose from. Of course there is much more than just flathead to catch, with heaps

of prawns around – you can net 4 to 5 kilos right on dark and they’ll continue to run plentifully for at least the next two weeks. Lake Tyers is also a great place to catch prawns, you can take the family and prop in front of the Hotel to catch a feed. Whiting is being landed at the Barrier Jetty and there are loads of Sand Crabs as usual. It’s just crazy according to Ross. For salmon lovers, up to 4½ pound fish is being caught at Lake Bunga and Red Bluff. Gippsland Lakes are certainly living up to their reputation as one of Victoria’s premier fishing spots.

Dog Playground DIY
A great way to keep your dog in shape is to build him his own dog playground. Building your playground is not as hard as it seems, and I bet you have half the materials in your backyard! All dogs’ benefit from having their own playground, they get extra training, extra fitness and more time for bonding. It also benefits the owner too! When building a playground, always consider your dog’s abilities. Older dog’s shouldn’t have climbing or jumping activities, where as a puppy needs a variety of activities. Take note of what your dog likes to do, does he like to crawl or does he like to jump? Here is a list of materials you may already have in your backyard or you can purchase for little cost. Tyres Tree stumps Planks Buckets Balls Hula hoops Shell pools PVC pipe A frames All of these materials each, have many purposes, here are some of them: Make obstacles with buckets filled with cement. Place the buckets in the configuration you want, fill with cement and let it dry. Most backyards have car tyres lying around, theses make great obstacles. Dig tyres into the ground vertically leaving a space for your dog to crawl through. If your dog is a “jumper”, then space the tyres out. If you’re like me, and have many car tyres lying around, find a plank and under each end, stack two or three tyres on top of each other.
PVC Pipe is great for weave poles. “A frames” are great for daring dog’s. Using a children’s old swing set is ideal, otherwise you can easily build one yourself. Tunnels can be created by using a kid’s play tunnel or with tyres dug into the ground and vertically set together. Don’t forget to incorporate balls and Frisbees into your dog playground. Unfortunately some people don’t have the backyard space to build a playground, so to ensure bonding and stimulation, make sure you walk your dog twice daily, organise “play dates” for him or find your nearest dog playground. Public dog playgrounds are a great way for your dog to socialise and put into practice his “listening skills’. It’s also a great way for you to make friends and organise more play dates! As Autumn approaches the variety of vegetables that can be planted decreases. Summer crops may be looking a bit ‘tired’ but beans and tomatoes may still be producing. Onions like an open, sunny spot with good air circulation. Areas that are sunny and open to the wind will discourage downy mildew. You can also store the seeds in an airtight container but ensure they are completely dry first as they may sweat and go mouldy.

Spinach can be sown now. It is a cool weather plant does best from early autumn and spring sowings. It should always be sown direct and, unless it has been sown thickly, will not need thinning. Spinach thrives on soils with plenty of old manure or compost but does not like soils that are too acid. If the weeds around your garden include clover and beans and cauliflower do well your soil will be OK. If sorrel and docks do well the soil will be very acidic and a dose of lime will help. Ground limestone (Calcium carbonate) is very safe to use and, while slower acting than other forms of lime available, is more beneficial to the soil. Broad beans also like a spot
open to good air movement. Many varieties grow quite tall and can be planted in ‘blocks’ with a stake on each corner joined by twine. This will help to keep them upright as they can flop over very easily. Some people grow them along a fence or trellis and tie them for support. I have heard of plants 1.8m (6’) high grown this way. There are also dwarf varieties available. There are doubtless other things that can be planted now. This is why ‘local’ knowledge is valuable. Howdy Folks! It’s autumn for sure. We saw the fall spider! Yippee! This morning, we were chatting with Paul from Niewesteeg Roses. Wow! There are some real beauties to come this season, thought you’d like a sneak preview. The Wedding Rose – discovered by Niewesteeg with richly fragrant very double pearly white flowers on a large healthy shrub. Climbing First Love – has a profusion of Roseto pink fragrant blooms with clean light foliage. This is a sport of that old favourite ‘first love’, also discovered by Niewesteeg. Eyes for You – this floribunda is stunning with medium to large cupped semi-double blooms, opening a pale pink, ageing to white. There is a purple blotch at the centre of each petal. Brilliant! Soul Mate – these old fashioned, very full blooms of butter gold and lemon have a spicy and intense liquorice fragrance. Forget-Me-Not – this one supporting Alzheimer’s Australia SA. It produces masses of large dusky plum pink informally guaranteed blooms, with heavy fruity fragrance. The Karnival – some of you would recognize this from my garden. It never stops flowering, has semi-double blooms of ivory, edged with glowing carmine Olde Fragrance – love this one! Always in flower, the fragrant carmine, pink flowers are on long stems and pick beautifully. Tatjana – just had to remind you of this fragrant, bright red rose. Try picking her buds, gorgeous. Ooops, I'm only just warming up and here comes Mark for the notes. It’s time to order barerooted roses, so give yourself a treat and take yourself to your nursery. Chat about which roses will bring you cheer! Prepare your beds, perhaps plant a pansy or pop. Some lettuce in the spot while you are waiting for June. THE Maffra Mardi Gras, which began in 1958 when 5 businessmen got together to develop a way of raising funds for the Maffra and District Hospital, is on in March. The event has changed over the years but is still a major fund raiser for many local organisations. The entrants raised over $152,000 in 2013!
This colourful celebration of community spirit kicks off with food and market stalls, carnival rides, music and buskers from 2pm, the big Parade starts at 6pm.
