Welcome to Daisy Girls Scouts!

Welcome to Daisy Girl Scouts!

There is nothing that shines quite like the excitement on a Daisy’s face as she heads through her first year in Girl Scouting. From forming those new friendships, to putting that first petal on her vest, a Daisy Girl Scout is full of energy and excitement as she begins her Girl Scout journey!

As a Daisy Girl Scout, your girl will have the opportunity to make new friends, attend our many council programs and events, explore nature through outdoor activities, make a difference in her community, learn new life skills, and have FUN!

Throughout her year as a Daisy, she will learn the Girl Scout Law earning petals along the way. She will learn the importance of being honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, responsible for what she says and does, respectful of herself and others, respectful of authority, and wise in her use of resources; all while making the world a better place and being a sister to every Girl Scout! She will also gain the confidence to try new things, discover new talents, and most importantly, be herself!

Your Daisy’s year will be one of excitement and wonder. You can stay involved in your Daisy’s journey by participating in troop activities and staying connected with local programs and events through our monthly Council email newsletter “Gateway Connect” and seasonal program guides. • Vegetable oil or baby oil

• Water Blue food coloring

• Funnel (optional)

Instructions:

• Fill your container halfway with water and add as much blue food coloring as desired.

• Fill the rest of the container up with baby oil or vegetable oil. Try and fill the container as full as possible, reducing the amount of airspace that will be left after you screw on the lid or cap.

• To make a wave tilt and gently shake your ocean in a bottle! Watch the wave action in your sea.

Reflection Questions:

• How are the waves in your container similar to ocean waves?

Summer STEM Activity

Unicorn Slime

Recipe from Living Locurto

You will need:

• cup white glue

• cup foaming shaving cream

• teaspoon borax powder

• 1 cup water

• Blue, pink and yellow neon food coloring

Instructions:

1. In a large bowl mix glue and shaving cream with spoon.

2. In a separate bowl or cup, mix 1/2 teaspoon of borax in 1 cup of water. Stir until the borax is dissolved. (To speed up this process, place mixture in a glass cup and microwave for 30-60 seconds.)

3. Add about a teaspoon of the borax and water mixture into the glue/shaving cream bowl and stir.

4. Knead with your hands and if it’s too sticky, add a tiny bit more borax and water mixture.

5. Once your fluffy slime recipe is ready. Separate into three pieces.

6. Add a drop of blue food coloring to the first piece of slime and knead until the entire piece is blue.

7. Repeat with the other two pieces of slime by adding one drop of pink and one drop of yellow to them.

8. When all three pieces are colored, add them together.

9. Gently knead the fluffy slime until you have a pretty mixture of the rainbow.

10. The longer you knead this slime, the more the colors will become one.

Notes:

• If you prefer not to use Borax to activate the slime, try to substitute with saline solution or laundry detergent. If you don’t use Borax, do not use water and you may need to add baking soda to thicken the slime.

• Rubber gloves recommended for sensitive skin.

• Do not eat.

• Do not make if you have skin allergies to cleaning supplies, glue, food dye or shaving cream.

Summer STEM Activity

Nature Art

You will need:

• Cyanotype (sun print) paper

• An acrylic sheet or frame of glass

• Heavy cardboard base (or thick book)

• A sink/tub full of water

• Fun and interesting nature objects to print (flower petals, leaves, shells, etc.)

Instructions:

• Place your sun paper blue side up on a heavy cardboard base.

• Arrange your nature items on the sun paper. It is best to arrange them in a dark room as even a little bit of light exposure can start the chemical reaction in the paper.

• Place the acrylic sheet or glass on top of your arrangement so it will lay flat.

• Expose to the sun until your paper turns white. Check the time frame on your sun paper’s instructions, but it should be about 1 – 5 minutes. Do not overexpose.

• Rinse the paper with water for about 5 minutes and lay flat to dry.

• Enjoy your nature art!

Reflection Questions:

• Which nature objects make the coolest designs?

• On a sunny day, would it take longer or shorter to expose your art, than on a cloudy day?

Summer STEM Activity

To Kool Rock Candy

Recipe from Growing a Jeweled Rose

You will need:

• Water

• A large pot

• Granulated sugar

• Bamboo skewers

• Kool-aid packets

• Glass jars

• Clothespins

• Spoons

Instructions:

1. Begin by soaking bamboo skewers in a container of water. Leave them to soak for at least one hour.

2. Remove the skewers from the water, and then coat the bottom half in sugar.

3. Set the skewers aside and allow them to fully dry.

4. Begin by pouring 4 cups of water into a large pot. Then, place it over medium heat.

5. As the water heats slowly add white sugar 1 cup at a time and stir until dissolved.

6. Continue to add more sugar and stir until you cannot get any more sugar to dissolve in the water. (Just to give you an idea I used almost 10 cups)

7. Once this occurs bring the mixture to a boil and then allow it to boil slowly for 10 minutes.

8. Remove the pot from heat and allow the sugar mixture to cool for 10-15 minutes.

9. While the water is cooling you can prepare your glass jars.

10. Pour one packet of Kool-aid into each jar, using one jar for each color/flavor of rock candy you wish to make.

11. Then, pour the sugar-water into the jars and stir each one until the Kool-aid is fully dissolved.

12. If you are using jars with lids you can place the lids on the jars and shake them to help get everything mixed.

13. Now, take a break, and wait for the glasses of sugar-water to cool to room temperature.

14. Once the water is cool it is time to submerge the bamboo sticks into the jars.

15. It will take roughly two weeks for your rock candy to fully form. It’s fun to check every few days to see the progress!

16. Enjoy!

Friendship

You’ve Got What it Takes

If you want good friends, you need to be a good friend too! Think of three things that make

Show and Tell

On your next virtual or in-person playdate, ask a friend to tell you about something—a game, a song, or even a pet—they love. Then share something you love with them. Learning about each other makes friendship stronger!

Warm Welcome

Sharing Is Caring

Play a game where you have to take turns. Waiting while others play can be hard, but seeing your friends enjoying themselves is part of the fun!

Learn to say “hello” in a language you don’t already speak. It will help you greet even more new friends.

What our family is looking forward to in June: __________________________________________________

JUNE
Is Fun Friends are the special people who care about you and who you love to laugh and play with. Good friends can help us feel happy and strong. Let’s celebrate them all month long!
15

Hopscotch

Use sidewalk chalk to draw a series of squares on the ground outside, then practice hopping from one to the other until you reach the end. You can make up different rules like that you have to hop on one foot or touch the ground on a certain square.

I Spy

Say, “I spy with my little eye,” and describe something you’re seeing without saying what it is. So it might be “something red” or “something round.” Then others have to guess what it is you’re looking at. The person who guesses right gets to say “I spy” next.

Follow the Leader

Pick someone to be the leader, then follow what they do. If they put their arms up in the air, everyone else has to do it too. If they do a funny walk, try your best to copy them. After a few minutes, trade so someone else is the leader.

Big Feelings

Emotions Dance

Put on some music and then dance how you might if you were really happy. After a minute or two, switch and dance like you were very sad. Then try dancing like you were angry. How do you move differently with each feeling?

Proud of Yourself

Have a grownup help you make a list of things you are good at. Maybe you’re good at brushing your teeth, taking care of your toys, or helping around the house. Some things might be harder than others, but thinking of all the things you do well should make you feel nice and proud.

Draw Your Feelings

Take a piece of paper and draw what happiness feels like on one side. Then on the other side, draw what it feels like to be sad or disappointed. Talk with your grownup about what colors you used for the different sides, and anything else that might be different about your two drawings.

What our family is looking forward to in August: ________________________________________________

AUGUST
It’s nice to be happy, but everybody feels sad, mad, or worried sometimes too. From times when we feel silly to times when we feel brave, there are so many emotions to explore.
