Spark Is All About You!
It has been a wonderful Girl Scout year with inspiration abounding. The girls have given it their all as they participated in badges, programs, camps and higher awards. We recently celebrated girls and adults at the annual meeting, bridging ceremonies, Top Seller events and the Juliette Pearls Leadership Society luncheon. It was an honor to be in attendance with you.
Our volunteers have been right alongside the girls encouraging them to reach their goals. I encourage you to not only think about the great work that volunteers have done this year, but to take it to the next step and nominate outstanding volunteers for awards throughout the year.
This fall we will once again open applications for educational scholarships for Gold Awardees and graduating seniors through the Sandy Remsberg Educational Scholarship. Girl Scouts are active throughout Kansas Heartland. I encourage you to invite others to join Girl Scouts and help them understand what it means to be a part of this great organization. The United Way helps here. Pearl Honoree from Rolinda
At the Annual Meeting, we celebrated Carol Foster Ruff as the Juliette Gordon Low Achievement Award recipient. Carol is a great example of dedication and immersing oneself into the world of Girl Scouts. Thank you to Carol and the other amazing volunteers whose work is meaningful to our girls and the council. As we move into the new school year, I want to remind you about the great work our girls are doing with their highest awards. I encourage you to support our youth as they explore higher award ideas. Encourage them during their application process all the way through project completion, and celebrate the girls and their achievements. The recognition area at the Wichita office that highlights Gold Award Girl Scouts from across the council is currently being updated.

In the late 1970s, Jan became a Girl Scout Troop Leader (even though she was a Campfire Girl in her youth). She generously provided refreshments for Girl Scout troops attending day camp at the Little House in Wichita’s Oak Park. By 1991, Jan was serving as the Chair of the Nominating Committee for the Board of Directors, helping raise money for our council by serving on the planning team for the “Urban Campout” in 1998, and also serving on the Girl Scouts of the Golden Plains Council Board of Directors, from 19992000, as a Member-at-Large. Acknowledging her organizational skills and creativity, Jan was appointed as Third Vice President (2000-2002), First Vice President (2003-2005), and ultimately elected to serve as Board President in 2006.

Juliette's
Jan Chandler Randle frequently refers to herself as a “professional volunteer,” and that title fits her perfectly. Not only has she given her talents and time over the years to the Girl Scouts, but also to the Junior League of Wichita, Wichita Children’s Home, Arts Partners, Kansas Society of Children with Challenges, the Wichita Public Library Board and the Wichita Art Museum, to name just a few. Jan also has the passion to be a long-time member of the “Thursday Afternoon Cooking Club,” “The Book Club” and “Shakespeare Club.”

Also in 2006, Girl Scouts of the United States of America announced a “realignment of council boundaries” throughout the nation. For Kansas, it meant that Girl Scouts of the Golden Plains Council was to merge with five other councils in Kansas and form a new one. It was determined that it would be headquartered in Wichita. This new council would need a new inclusive name and a new Board of Directors with a broad representation. Budgets needed to be consolidated, properties cataloged, organizational bylaws rewritten, and some staff changes considered. Jan took on the task to help all of the merging councils work together. Soon, a realignment task force was making progress, a new CEO was hired, and Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland was born.
At the 2022 Juliette's Pearls Leadership Society Luncheon, board members, JPLS members, and CEO Rolinda Sample met with Keynote Speaker Sarah Deer. Deer is a University Dinstinguished Professor at the University of Kansas and Chief Justice for the Prairie Island Indian Community Court of Appeals. As a tribal jurist and scholar, Justice Deer's scholarship focuses on the intersection of federal Indian law and victims' rights, using Indigenous principles as a framework. Her efforst to address criminal justice reform on Indian reservations have received national awards from the American Bar Association and the Department of Justice. With the last luncheon being held in 2019 due to COVID-19, both the 2021 and 2022 Legacy Pearl Honorees were recognized at this years' luncheon. In addition to Jan Randle, Jane Pracht Lambertz was also honored as a 2022 Legacy Pearl in memorium. Her passion for Girl Scouts began as a youth member and continued to her leadership activities and as a member of the Board of Directors. Dee Rolph was honored as the 2021 Legacy Pearl. As a champion of girl ambition, she served as a troop leader and a member of the Board of Directors. Both Jane Lambertz and Dee Rolph were profiled in previous issues of Spark. 2022

Additional members of the Gold Award Girl Scouts 2021 Class 12
Natasha noticed a gap in the awareness and knowledge of differentiating service dogs, emotional support animals and facility dogs. Natasha worked with the Kansas Specialty Dog Service (KSDS) on a community education program aimed at increasing familiarity with state and federal regulations. She created and recorded a presentation that was made available to the Mulvane Public Library and was disseminated nationally at conventions KSDS attends.
Kylie Fletcher Kylie's Gold Award project aimed at addressing two tasks at once; providing extra warmth for unhoused community members during colder weather and reducing the volume of plastic bags entering landfills. Kylie learned to crochet "plarn" mats made from plastic bags. This allowed her to not only educate on recycling and reducing waste, but help her community members in need as well.
Katrina Leddy Passionate about Girl Scouts and the outdoors, Katrina focused her Gold Award on constructing a new pavilion for campers to enjoy the outdoors rain or shine at Camp Four Winds. She added a covering to the existing patio so the space could be more usable year-round.
Gold Girl Scouts don’t just change the world for the better, they change it for good.
The Gold Award is earned by girls in grades 9–12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership in developing sustainable solutions to local, national and global challenges. Since 1916, Girl Scouts have answered the call to drive lasting, impactful change. These four members of the 2021 class were missed in the prior publication and we are excited to share their projects with you now.
Annie Weishaar Inspired by a trip to the Tokyo prefecture of Japan in 2019, Annie noticed many murals decorating the streets she traveled each day. Upon returning home, she concentrated her Gold Award on beautification of her hometown, Phillipsburg.
