24 Activities!!!

Letters from Liz The 2018 Girl Scout year kicked off in October with an inspiring week in Columbus, Ohio at the 54th Girl Scouts of the USA National Council Session and G.I.R.L. 2017 Convention, attended by more than 8,000 Girl Scouts. Thank you to our seven council delegates, especially girl delegates Aubrey, Kate and Reeny, who represented the council so well. A major highlight of the week was the recognition of ten inspiring Gold Award Girl Scouts selected as 2017 National Young Women of Distinction, including Kansas Heartland’s very own Reeny Botros! The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest and most prestigious award in Girl Scouting. It is comparable to the Boy Scouts of America’s Eagle Scout, and harder to earn! The Girl Scout Gold Award Program requires more than 80 hours of work to successfully complete a project that demonstrates extraordinary leadership, has a measurable and sustainable impact, and addresses a local challenge related to a national and/or global issue. Gold Award Girl Scouts take matters into their own hands and bring about the change our communities and the world needs. Did you know that Gold Award Girl Scouts earn college scholarships, enter the armed forces one rank higher than other recruits, and demonstrate higher educational and career outcomes than their peers? There are many Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts currently working on their Gold Award projects, and I can’t wait to share loudly and proudly the stories of the impact these young ladies are making in our communities and beyond. As members of our Girl Scout family, I invite all of you to share and amplify the incredible stories of all our G.I.R.L’s (Go-getters, Innovators, Risk-takers, Leaders) through social media and in conversations with family, friends and co-workers. Now is the time to speak up about how Girl Scouts champions girls’ futures and fuels the female leadership pipeline in our communities, in our country, and in the world. Girl Scouts - For Girls, By Girls, and All Girls!

2018 Keynote Speaker

SYLVIA ACEVEDO Girl Scouts of the USA CEO Lifelong Girl Scout, entrepreneur, author, engineer, and rocket scientist.

Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland is proud to announce Sylvia Acevedo, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of the USA, as the keynote speaker of the third-annual Juliette’s Pearls Leadership Society Luncheon. A lifetime member of Girl Scouts, Sylvia has a background in entrepreneurship, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), and innovation, as well as a lifelong commitment to girls’ success in their own lives and in the world.

3rd Annual Juliette’s Pearls Leadership Luncheon Wed., February 21, 2018 Drury Plaza Hotel Broadview, Wichita, KS

Sylvia was a member of the GSUSA Board of Directors from 2009-2016, but long before being named to the board, she experienced the power of Girl Scouts. As a girl growing up in New Mexico, after her family suffered a major tragedy, she was forced to move and leave behind her school, neighborhood, and friends. It was this move that brought her to Girl Scouts, which would change her life forever, her troop providing her with experiences not widely available to girls of her background at the time. “This lifechanging experience showed me what leadership looked like and enabled me to pursue leadership as a goal,” Sylvia said. Over the years Sylvia has spoken across the country about the importance of helping girls discover their strengths, passions, and talents. She served on the founding board of the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders in Austin, Texas—the largest all-girls public school in the nation. She is a member of the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics and is chair of its Early Learning Subcommittee. She understands the education system and the challenges parents face, and has talked with educators nationwide about the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Family Engagement curriculum she authored.

Tues, February 20 • 5:30 - 7:30 P.M. Spirit AeroSystems HR Service Center 3420 S. Oliver - Wichita, KS (Weather Backup Date: Wed, Feb. 21) See page 29 for more information.

A talented technology executive, Sylvia previously was founder, president, and CEO of CommuniCard LLC. She also previously served in executive and business development roles at REBA Technologies, Dell Computer Corporation, Autodesk Inc., Tandem Ungermann-Bass, Apple Computer, and IBM—and she began her career as a rocket scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Sylvia was one of the first Hispanic students to earn a graduate engineering degree from Stanford University—an MS in industrial engineering—and she has a Bachelor of Science with honors in industrial engineering from New Mexico State University.

Join us at Spirit Aerosystems in Wichita for an evening packed with hands-on, S.T.E.M. activities including making squishy circuits, building a plane out of cookie boxes, a Lego station, airplane races, circuit games, and more. Help the Cookie Share Program reach 150,000! Through the Cookie Share Program, Girl Scouts and their kind cookie customers can share cookies with members of the military and their families, including those serving overseas, or with various Kansas charities of their choice. In 2018, the Cookie Share Program is poised to reach another milestone: the 150,000 mark — WOW! During the 2017 Cookie Sale, more than 22,000 Cookie Shares were sold by Kansas Girl Scouts. That’s more than 22,000 packages of cookies shared with Kansas charities and members of the military, including those serving overseas. Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland has distributed more than 139,650 packages of cookies through the Cookie Share Program since its inception in 2010.

Tips for Cookie Program success

Parents/guardians, help your Girl Scout:

Be honest and fair. Wait until February 10 to start selling. Be proud and wear her Girl Scout uniform or apparel. People love to see badges and hear about

Introduce herself as a Girl Scout (i.e., "I'm Sasha, a Girl Scout Junior!"). Help her set a Cookie Program goal, so she can share her goal with customers. Use her order card when she runs out of cookies. Take orders, so the leader will know exactly

her accomplishments.

what is needed and can pick up more product.

Utilize her list of last year’s customers to get repeat customers.

Girl Scouts, remember:

Don’t ever feel like you’re a pest for asking people to buy cookies. Most people can’t wait to

buy their favorite Girl Scout Cookies. And most of all, they love supporting girls like you!

Name the varieties of cookies available. State that cookies sell for $4 per package. Go door-to-door to sell to family, friends and neighbors. Be cheerful and courteous. Thank people whether they buy or not. Talk about your sale goal. Are you taking a special trip with your cookie proceeds? Do you have plans for a service project? If so, your customers would love to hear it! Use Smart Cookies online tools such e-cards to reach more customers. If you’re under 13 years old, ask your family and friends to use their social media to help you get the word out. Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram are all appropriate social media sites. Cookies may NOT be sold on buy/sell/trade social media sites or sale sites like eBay. Overcome objections by offering options. For example, if someone doesn’t eat sweets, you can suggest they purchase Cookie Shares.

Ask business owners to buy cookies to treat their employees.

Wichita Girl Scout earns national honor Reeny Botros is among 10 Gold Award Girl Scouts named 2017 National Young Women of Distinction Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland is proud to announce that Maureen “Reeny” Botros, 17, of Wichita, was named by Girl Scouts of the USA as a National Young Woman of Distinction, the organization’s most prestigious honor. GSUSA selects 10 National Young Women of Distinction annually among Girl Scouts across the country who have earned their Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouts. Botros was honored and presented her Gold Award project during G.I.R.L. 2017, the Girl Scout National Convention. Approximately 5 percent of all Girl Scouts in grades 9 through 12 go on to earn the Girl Scout Gold Award, with only 10 girls in this high-achieving group receiving the National Young Women of Distinction honor. For her Gold Award project, Botros invented “Illumi-cize” fashion accessories to promote physical activity among youth, attract more girls to STEM careers, and address negative stereotypes about women in technology.

She designed the accessories to monitor heart rate and light up to incentivize exercise. But that was just the beginning – Botros went on to host a series of free “Catwalk Coding” camps teaching girls electrical and coding skills they could use to make their own lightup fashion accessories. During fashion runway shows, girls wore accessories they created. Botros presented her invention to President Barack Obama during the White House Science Fair in 2015, and she received grants from the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) to host her free Catwalk Coding camps for local girls over the past year. Selected as a HerLEAD Fellow, she received the opportunity to conduct her Catwalk Coding camp for more than 100 girls over Thanksgiving weekend in Mexico City. “By taking an innovative approach to allgirl STEM education, I hope to contribute to closing the gender gap in STEM fields,” Botros said. “Too often, girls are led to believe that to pursue STEM requires that they adapt to the male-dominated field. The message of Catwalk Coding and G.I.R.L. is that STEM is already compatible with their interests.” Her extraordinary leadership as a Gold Award Girl Scout and now, as a National Young Woman of Distinction, exemplifies how Girl Scouts take the lead like a G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader) to make a difference in their communities and the world. The daughter of Drive Maged S. and Maureen Botros, Reeny is a homeschooled senior in high school

who is also enrolled in coursework at Friends University. A proud Girl Scout since Daisies, she earned the Girl Scout Bronze and Silver Awards before earning the Girl Scout Gold Award. She has been an active member of the Wichita Mayor’s Youth Council throughout high school, has competed in Lego Mindstorms and BEST Robotics, and was a NCWIT national runner-up three times. In the summer of 2016, she was selected to travel to Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California, for seven weeks of Apple Engineering Technology Camp. “All of us at Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland are extremely proud of Reeny’s selection as one of the 10 National Young Women of Distinction for 2017,” said Liz Workman, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland. To honor Girl Scouts’ National Young Women of Distinction, the Kappa Delta Foundation grants the 10 girls a combined $50,000 in college scholarships, reflecting Kappa Delta’s commitment to girls’ leadership and their pursuit of education. This includes a $5,000 scholarship for Reeny. She will also receive a $10,000 scholarship from the Susan Bulkeley Butler Institute for the Development of Women Leaders, which is providing a total of $100,000 to the 10 National Young Women of Distinction.

Congratulations, Reeny, on showing the world how to take the lead like a G.I.R.L.! DECEMBER 2017

G.I.R.L. Agenda

A nonpartisan initiative to inspire, prepare, and mobilize girls and those who care about them to lead positive change through civic action. Civic action is all about working to make a difference for the common good. For more than 100 years, Girl Scouts has supported girls by offering resources that prepare them to lead, lift their voices, champion their views, and be advocates for the issues and ideas important to them. When it comes to improving society, every person who identifies with the G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™ Agenda has a role and a responsibility. The G.I.R.L. Agenda makes it simple to access free civic engagement resources (derived from Girl Scout programming) to help girls: • Advocate for positive change in their community • Stand up against everyday injustices • Challenge unfair policies and champion causes • Mobilize communities to donate or volunteer • Advocate through letter-writing campaigns • Create and support petitions • Call or meet with public officials and community leaders to discuss important issues • Participate in parades and marches • Support businesses with shared beliefs 18

Spark ☙ DECEMBER 2017

By making age-appropriate resources based on our proven programming accessible to all, and by providing tools to influence policy issues affecting girls, the G.I.R.L. Agenda will give hundreds of thousands of girls and adults tangible ways to take civic action on topics of their choosing, expanding the reach of civic engagement resources beyond Girl Scouts’ 2.6 million members. Because when we take small steps together—across generations—we ignite a larger, lasting effect on our world.

The Girl Scout Difference: Girl Scouts offers the best leadership development experience for girls in the world—one that is designed with, by, and for girls. Girl Scouts is proven to help girls thrive in five key ways as they: Develop a strong sense of self.

Display positive values. Seek challenges and learn from setbacks. Form and maintain healthy relationships. Identify and solve problems in the community.

Girl Scouts unleashes the G.I.R.L. (Gogetter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)TM in every girl, preparing her for a lifetime of leadership — from taking a nighttime hike under the stars to accepting a mission on the International Space Station; from lobbying the city council with her troop to holding a seat in Congress; from running her own cookie business today to tackling cybersecurity tomorrow. Our Girl Scout Leadership Experience is a one-of-a kind leadership development program for girls, with proven results. It is based on timetested methods and research-backed programming that help girls take the lead — in their own lives and in the world. The inclusive, female-focused environment of a Girl Scout troop creates a safe space where girls can try new things, develop a range of skills, take on leadership roles, and just be themselves.

Troop Spotlight

❧❧❧❧

Hill City Daisies bond around the campfire Troop 10561 has nine Daisy Girl Scouts who enjoy every meeting with their Girl Scout sisters, and the girls already have campfire memories to cherish. The girls loved meeting with other Hill City Girl Scouts around the campfire as they celebrated Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low’s birthday. They cooked hot dogs, enjoyed watermelon and cupcakes, and of course, sang songs around the campfire. Last year, the girls worked on the Daisy Flower Garden Journey, and they are working on earning their Daisy petals. One of their favorite activities last year was making cheese (They’ve already asked when they can do it again!). They also loved their troop trip to the city park as they worked on their Journey.

New adventures, memories abound for Emporia troop Sleeping by the tigers, woodworking, and go-kart racing are just a few of the new adventures Emporia Troop 30035 has embarked on in Girl Scouts! This troop of seven girls agrees “the best thing about Girl Scouts is going on new adventures and

getting together with their Girl Scout sisters,” said Gwen Harris, one of the leaders of the active troop. Last summer, the girls slept near the tigers at the Sedgwick County Zoo and raced go-karts at the Alley. Together, they also earned their Woodworking

badge as they used hammers, screwdrivers and sawed wood for a project. Another highlight for the troop was when three girls earned the Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn, after building an archery shelter at Camp Double E in Emporia.

Check out the activities these troops have experienced! The showcased troops won a spotlight feature in the Spark as part of the 2018 Girl Scout membership renewal contest held this spring. To be entered into the contest, the troops had to have at least 80 percent of their troop renewed and have two active leaders by the contest deadline.

Augusta Cadette troop explores high adventure at Jamboree Troop 40326 started in 2009 as Daisy Girl Scouts, and this Augusta troop has continued to reap the benefits leading the way as Girl Scout sisters! The troop of six Cadettes continues to enjoy making new friends and experiencing new adventures, including their troop trip this

summer to West Virginia, where they attended the 2017 Girl Scout Jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Reserve. Traveling by charter bus with girls from across the council, Troop 40326 enjoyed everything from water sports to zip-lining, and they even earned their Archery badge. Through the Girl

Scout Cookie Program and other fundraisers, the girls were able to raise enough money to go on the trip. These dedicated Cadette Girl Scouts had fun earning their New Cuisine and Detective badges, and are eager to begin working on the Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn.

Santana troop enjoys sisterhood, serving their community Troop 60030 has gained three new Girl Scouts this year already! This multi-level troop started a year and a half ago and includes Daisies to Cadettes. One of their favorite activities they’ve participated in this past year was the Satanta Day parade. As their community service project, they gathered and delivered non-perishable items to a neighboring town that had been devastated by the wildfires this year. These girls are excited for another year of Girl Scouting and are already planning how they can continue to serve their community.
