Sheila Bair has had a long and distinguished career in government, academia, and finance. She received numerous awards and recognition for her leadership at the FDIC, including the JFK Library’s Profiles in Courage Award, being twice named by Forbes Magazine as the second most powerful woman in the world, and dubbed the “little guy’s protector in chief ” by Time Magazine. Ms. Bair’s relentless focus on the public interest has always been a hallmark of her government career, beginning as a senior advisor (1981-88) to former Senate Majority Leader Robert Dole; a Commissioner of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (1991-95); and Assistant Secretary for Financial Institutions at the Treasury Department (2001-2002) when she worked to stabilize and secure our financial infrastructure in the wake of the horrific 9/11 attacks. Ms. Bair’s academic and policy work have also focused on public policy as the Dean’s Professor of Financial Regulatory Policy at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst (2002-2006), senior Advisor to the Pew Charitable Trusts (2011-2015) where she founded the Systemic Risk Council, a group of distinguished financial experts which advocates for policies to promote financial

An articulate and frequently provocative writer and public speaker, Ms. Bair has published numerous columns in the Wall Street Journal, NY Times, Washington Post, Financial Times, and Fortune Magazine. She is the author of NY Times Best Seller "Bull by the Horns", her 2012 memoir of the financial crisis, and has also written books for children on financial matters including her young adult book on the crisis, "Bullies of Wall Street", and picture books on financial basics, "Rock Brock and the Savings Shock", and "Isabel’s Car Wash".

Cookie Share Rewards Girl Scouts are always giving back in unique ways, here is your chance to be recognized for that hard work!

How Cookie Shares works... Through the Share Program, Girl Scouts and their kind cookie customers can share cookies with members of the military and their families or with various Kansas charities of their choice. In 2018, the Cookie Share Program distributed 19,122 cookie packages to the military and Kansas charities. That means Girl Scouts reached a landmark number of shares with more than 158,772 being donated since the program's inception in 2010. How does the program work? It's simple! Shares cost the same as a package of cookies, and customers can simply opt to purchase a tax-deductible Share, which donates a package of cookies. Tell your customers about this sweet way to give back!

Cookie Powered Adventures Ever wonder where cookies can take you? Maybe it's ziplining at Starwoods Outdoor Center, a resident camp at Double E, or even traveling across the country. Hear from a few Girl Scouts on what cookies did for them!

Girls in STEM What happens when a curious group of Girl Scouts travel to Texas for a STEM camp? They have an adventure of a lifetime, powered by the Cookie Program! Cadette Girl Scouts of Troops 40007, 40241, and 40080 were able to use Cookie Credits and travel throughout Texas to learn all about marine biology, how fish hatcheries operate, what happens to all the garbage that ends up in the ocean, and how animals are cared for in aquariums. “One of my favorite parts of our Texas trip was the Marine Biology Camp because we got to learn about all kinds of different sea animals and all the new people we met,” Cadette Kaitlin R. said. The go-getters even teamed up with local Texas Girl Scouts to conduct a beach clean-up, earning their Junior Ranger badges at the Padre Island National Seashore near Corpus Christi. “We got to see real live starfish – here's a baby starfish we saw when we went on a boat ride during the Camp to find sediment samples,” said Sydney C. (right)

Spark ☙ DECEMBER 2018

The Big Apple After an adventure that took Troop 70161 to Chicago, the Girl Scout Seniors from Parsons immediately knew where they wanted to go next — New York City! To make their dream a reality, the girls established financial goals and jumped into action. The troop worked hard raising funds and stockpiling Cookie Credits until they had enough for the big trip. This summer, eight Seniors and five adult Girl Scouts hopped on a plane and dashed off to the East Coast. Their whirlwind adventure included seeing Wicked on Broadway, exploring Central Park and Chinatown, touring the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and ascending to the Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center. They even visited the Girl Scout Central Shop! In addition, the girls viewed the Statue of Liberty and 9/11 Museum, a poignant moment for the Girl Scouts to learn about the historic day and sacrifices made by first responders. Upon experiencing all facets of traveling around NYC, the pulse of a city that never sleeps, and a few slices of New York pizza, the Girl Scouts boarded their flight back to Kansas. Fresh off the plane, the girls were already dreaming up their next excursion and it’s sure to be an expedition to remember!
