Letters from Liz All year long, the girl experiences delivered by our dedicated volunteers, council staff and community partners unleash STRONG in our Girl Scouts! From outdoor adventures to cybersecurity to global travel, Kansas Heartland Girl Scouts have the opportunity to try new things, get off the beaten path, and challenge themselves. I am excited by this summer’s outdoor programming finale—our first ever Starwoods Renaissance Fair Camporee, August 3 - 5. Current and new Girl Scout families can join us for a weekend of medieval fun and outdoor challenges! Kansas Heartland, together with GSUSA and our sister councils, remains focused on girls! Girl Scouts is the only organization for girls with the expertise and reach to provide girls across the nation with cutting-edge programming to empower them to dream big, gain skills and become strong, confident leaders. We provide an all-girl, safe, supportive environment, in which girls can develop the skills and aptitudes to thrive in the 21st century as workforce-ready adults. That’s why Girl Scouts is always developing fresh and relevant programming. So stay tuned in July to learn the details about the new badges being announced nationally for the 2019 Girl Scout year! In addition to the outdoors, we are launching more STEM badges, across all age groups, as part of our commitment to encouraging girls to discover and excel in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Girls participating in Girl Scouts develop five important outcomes— challenge seeking, community problem-solving, healthy relationships, strong sense of self, and positive values. These critical social skills and attitudes enable them to become responsible, productive, caring and engaged citizens! I look forward to welcoming our new and returning Kansas Heartland Girl Scouts to another Girl Scout year filled with fun, adventures and challenges!

Lifetime of Leadership it inspired all in attendance to take the lead and take action in support of causes they care about.
Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) released a new national PSA,“Lifetime of Leadership,” heralding the organization’s legacy of fostering female change-makers and preparing girls for a lifetime of leadership, success, and adventure. Featuring notable Girl Scout alums in fields such as technology, politics, media, and sports, the PSA showcases the positive change these powerful female leaders have created through activism, speaking up, breaking glass ceilings, and more—and illustrates the importance of Girl Scouts
in providing girls with the leadership experiences they need to make their voices heard and effect change. “Lifetime of Leadership” brings to life what recent studies have shown: Girl Scouts have better life outcomes than their non– Girl Scout peers. They are more confident, seek challenges to a greater degree, are more active decision-makers, and are more proficient problem-solvers in their communities. The PSA brought to life what a Girl Scout’s leadership journey can look like as she grows into a woman, and
“We are proud to premiere our powerful new PSA and showcase the impactful change that Girl Scout alums have created to make the world a better place,” said Sylvia Acevedo, GSUSA CEO. “We know that leadership and meaningful civic action start at a young age—at home, at school, and in local communities. This PSA is a rallying cry for more girls to realize their leadership potential with Girl Scouts. The world is counting on them, and we hope our more than 50 million alums will be inspired to reconnect with us and share their leadership journey with the next generation of girls who will lead our country into the future.”
Visit www.girlscouts.org/ leadership to watch the PSA and learn more on our history of leadership.

Congratulations to our council's Gold Award Girl Scouts who have accomplished this incredible honor.
Alexandra Corns
The Wichita native chose to address the cycle of child abuse with the “It Shouldn’t Hurt to be a Child” project. Corns created and donated relief bags to charities for immediate aid to victims. But to ensure long term and sustainable assistance, she developed a video and lecture series aimed at training EMT classes in best practices on responding to abuse cases. In addition, she launched a website for educational support and to spread awareness. The project earned her a grant from the Disney Foundation/Youth Service League to further her mission. “The time and money management skills I gained through this project and practicing how to spend responsibly and handle a long-term project are experiences I would have been hard-pressed to find anywhere else,” Corns said.
Rachelle Lumpkins
This Hays Girl Scout noticed a rising trend in children between the ages of 3-17 being diagnosed with ADHD. After researching methods and practices, she found that music therapy could help children with the disorder. She created a portable sound garden for preschools to utilize in the daily routines of children ages 2-4. The Hays Area Children’s Center partnered with her on the project, where she provided musical instruments to interact with and raise cognitive functioning in those with ADHD. Lumpkins, now in college, stresses the importance of this project on her development of key skills helping her today. “I have already stepped into leadership roles in college because of what I’ve been taught,” she said.
Elizabeth Varns
She created a blog to coincide with the A Girl Scout from Valley Center, Elizabeth classes and serve as a resource with tutorials and support for any girl wishing saw a need for girls to customize their to customize their wardrobe. clothes to fit their personal style and taste. Varns felt the fashion industry “This experience taught me that pushed certain styles that don’t always leadership skills are not restricted fit the needs of those wanting to dress to age […] Each workshop gave me more modestly. National S’mores Day is just around the corner and you’re invited to join us in celebrating! For our National S’mores Day events your family and your Girl Scout friends will enjoy the yummy goodness of s’mores (of course), hot dogs, chips, water and fun activities. S’mores are a Girl Scout tradition around the campfire, but did you know this DELICIOUS treat is rooted in Girl Scout history? The recipe for a s’more dates back to the 1927 GSUSA handbook, “Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts,” which featured the “Some More” recipe:
“Some More” 8 sticks 16 graham crackers 8 bars plain chocolate (Hershey’s or any of the plain brands, broken in two) 16 marshmallows

Spark ☙ JULY 2018
Toast two marshmallows over the coals to a crisp gooey state and then put them inside a graham cracker and chocolate bar sandwich. The heat of the marshmallow between the halves of chocolate bar will melt the chocolate a bit. Though it tastes like “some more” one is really enough.
SPECIALTY TROOPS
As girls get older, sometimes the traditional troop model doesn’t fit their interests and needs. The troop may consider choosing a specialty—rather than doing a little bit about a lot of topics, specialty troops focus in for a deep-dive into a topic of interest to the girls. Currently, GSKH has the following specialty troops available for girls:

7800 S. 103rd Street West, Clearwater Get ready for GSKH’s first annual Chameleon Fun Run. Run or walk the 3K course and get BLASTED with color! We'll have food trucks, a DJ, a photo station, and an inflatable obstacle course. What's in the color powder? The colors are made with high-quality cornstarch and food dyes. All materials are 100% FD&C and/or D&C grade (food grade) and approved by the FDA. However, the product is not designed for consumption.
How do I get the color to stay? 1) Change out of colored items and do NOT shake. Gently place in a bag for later. 2) Once home, lay item flat and spray til soaked with white vinegar. Use cardboard or plastic if item has layers to keep one side from bleeding to the other. 3) Let dry flat. Likely this will take a couple days. 4) Place a rag over the item and iron with high heat. 5) Put in dryer on high for ~10 min. 6) Wash with "delicate" cycle and wear again.

Oct 20 in Garden City, page 18 Oct 27 in Norton, page 20
Many people recognize October 31 as Halloween, but it's also Founder’s Day — the birthday of Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low! She was born in Savannah, Georgia in 1860.
⇨ Do service in her memory.
Juliette started the Girl Scout Movement in 1912, with just 18 girls in her hometown of Savannah. Along with Juliette, these first Girl Scouts blazed trails and redefined what was possible for themselves and for girls everywhere. This was before women could legally vote, own property, or even work outside the home! She envisioned an organization that would prepare girls to meet their world with courage, confidence, and character.

Festival Of Giving A giving tradition 60 years strong. Small donations from many people can make a HUGE difference! Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland
2018
Festival of Giving began in 1950 as the Doll Festival in Wichita, where Girl Scouts would dress dolls and display them at the festival. Afterward, the dolls were distributed to local and overseas agencies for children who might not receive Christmas gifts.
Fast forward to today as hundreds of Girl Scouts continue the tradition by giving time and donations to fulfill social service organization’s wish lists. Festival of Giving is now a statewide event for any Girl Scout who wants to give back to her community. Girls who participate receive a free patch, spend time learning about the organization they’re helping, and demonstrate that small donations from many people make a huge difference. 10

an IGNITE story “Even though I got home yesterday, I got to see Sam today and I finally got to tell her about my camp experience for once. I get to hear all about hers and what she did while she’s at Girl Scout camp, but this time, I was the girl in Girl Scouts and told her vaguely that I got to make bracelets and bath bombs. I got to eat s’mores. ... I got to meet some awesome people and have my own camp stories that made her laugh. I got to sing camp songs (and have a discussion about the correct words). I got to experience new things and learn...I got to come home exhausted after an AMAZING experience and pass out on my bed. Thank you Girl Scouts for letting me be the girl again!”

COOKIE CONGRATS! Snakes and bus rides and cookies, oh my! More than 1,400 girls and their families joined us to celebrate at the Top Cookie Seller event this year at the Sedgwick County Zoo. Girls Scouts who sold 100+ Cookie Shares began the day in style, riding in a limousine from the Wichita council office to the zoo. Then 500+ sellers from across Kansas celebrated their cookie success with passes to the zoo, guided tours, a photo booth with Council CEO Liz Workman, and chances to eat a cricket or pet a snake! But wait, there's more! Cookie Bosses who sold 1,000+ packages hopped on a bus to the Great Wolf Lodge for a slumber party. They explored with magic wands on their MagiQuest, meeting characters and challenges in the enchanted realm. They learned how the water park works, including moving about a million gallons of water a day! Celebrating long into the night, the next morning they continued activities and even some Girl Scout style yoga. Congratulations to all of the GoGetters, Innovators, Risk-Takers and Leaders for another successful Cookie Program! 16

Stories from Girl Scout Camp Estes Park 6th Grade Trip Estes Park, Colorado • May 13
Horseback riding wasn’t the only unique and scenic opportunity. Each group hit up the downtown shopping options for a few hours, selecting souvenirs, and using their communication and negotiation skills to determine how long to spend at each store. Naturally, ice cream and other treats were greatly enjoyed during the outing! After one final breakfast in Colorado, the Girl Scouts packed up their bags and said farewell before journeying home. They were left with memories of beautiful scenery, waking up to elk grazing outside their windows each morning, and the other fun adventures from this unforgettable trip!
In May, Girl Scouts packed their bags and prepared for the adventure of a lifetime. The Cadettes and chaperones ventured to Northwest Kansas, met up, hopped into their Colorado-bound cars and began their journey to Estes Park. Upon arrival, girls were assigned rooms, encouraging them to make new friends.
Camp like a G.I.R.L.
Cedar Bluff, Ellis • May 31 - June 3
Once settled into their weekend lodging, the girls excitedly listed off all the activities available for their choosing. The park campus offered swimming, miniature golf, roller skating, basketball, sand volleyball, hiking and horseback riding. Splitting into smaller groups, girls were able to select their favorite activities. One of the groups hit the trails on horseback, taking in the sights, enjoying the wildlife and crossing bridges and streams.
Over 60 girls and volunteers from across our 80 counties gathered at Cedar Bluff Reservoir from May 31st – June 3rd. Daisies and Brownies started off the adventure weekend with a one night camp and the Junior and Cadettes followed and stayed 2 nights. Kansas Wildlife and Parks welcomed Girl Scouts onto their campground and offered many great first time experiences for our girls. Daisies and Brownies were able to watch how to cook over a fire, roasted their own hot dogs, hiked through the plains of Cedar Bluff and earned one of their outdoor badges! Before leaving camp these Girl Scouts were able to participate in archery, fishing and picking up a few camp items at our Trading Post. Juniors and Cadettes were placed in patrol groups that 18
Safari Wildlife Adventure Camp Maxwell Wildlife Refuge, Canton • June 16-17
helped them meet new friends and work together as they prepared all the meals. They were able to take a swim in the lake, earn outdoor badges and geocache through the reservoir. Girls were able to walk out of Camp like a G.I.R.L with more confidence in their outdoor skills, memories to last a lifetime and closer friendships through the Girl Scout sisterhood.
My Robot & Me Day Camp Camp Double E, Emporia • June 4-7
Beginning with a tour of the Maxwell Wildlife Refuge on a modern-day covered wagon, Kansas Girl Scouts had the opportunity to spend a weekend discovering our native prairies at the Safari Wildlife Adventure Camp. Girls got up close and personal with the bison and their calves, learned about wildflowers and insects on the prairie and how they benefit the natural habitat. They spent two days camping at McPherson State Fishing Lake while learning fire safety and campfire cooking, fishing, completing badge requirements for the Bugs, Flowers and Trees badge, creating Kalimbas, and making lasting memories with new Girl Scout friends!
What happens when eleven daisies, brownies and juniors spend four days at Camp Double E? They have a blast earning their robotics badge in an exciting environment! The girls worked together as a team to understand how robots function. Each one then developed their own unique algorithm describing themselves and brainstormed ideas for apps they would like to code and create. One group even wanted to build a cookie credit app, just for Girl Scouts! The girls tested their engineering knowledge by constructing a “wiggle-bot” out of every-day objects and a small motor. These innovators developed blueprints for their “bedroom cleaning” robot. To give their creative minds a well-deserved break, the girls enjoyed yoga, fun water games, hiking and even Mine Craft archery. These girls left camp feeling like the true innovators they are!
