Innovation Soars with Spirit

11 Thin Mint Sprint 5K Run/Walk 13 Overnight Camps

Letters from Liz Our summer Girl Scout adventures are just around the corner and I couldn’t be more excited! I’ve been super energized meeting so many of our amazing Cookie Pros this year. Girls, you’ve all worked really hard to achieve your goals and power your summer adventures. This summer we have outdoor challenges galore and much, much more for all of our Girl Scout Go-Getters, Innovators, Risk-Takers and Leaders! At our Starwoods Outdoor Center we have not one, but two six-night resident camps, as well as a host of three-night “mini” resident camps. During our two resident camps, all of you Innovators will have the opportunity to check out the STEM stations in WATC’s FutureMaker Mobile Learning Lab! We’ve got another Spirit of Nature three-night adventure filled with traditional camp activities at Camp Lakeside in Scott City, plus a two-night Zombie Survival Camp at Camp Double E in Emporia and a two-night, three-day excursion at Cedar Bluff State Park in Ellis. What fascinates you more, adventures above ground, underground, or even underneath the water? Juniors, if you want to learn all about rockets and robots, join us for Amelia’s Angels Camp at Starbase on the McConnell Air Force Base the last week of June. If you’d like to brush up on your flying skills, we’ve got another exciting Harri-ette Potter Overnight Camp in Abilene during July. But maybe you’re more interested in underwater and underground adventures. How about discovering scuba diving at the Family YMCA in Salina, or would you rather create movie magic hundreds of feet underground in the salt mines at Strataca in Hutchinson? These are just a few of the many, many Girl Scout adventures you will find in our 2018 summer edition of Spark Magazine. I look forward to learning about your Girl Scout adventures this summer!

Leadership Society Luncheon Inspires Girl Scout Founder Juliette Gordon Low’s vision was to give all girls the opportunity to discover, lead, and make their community and the world a better place. The Juliette’s Pearls Leadership Society works to advance that vision by raising funds and awareness for Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland, ensuring girls across the state have the opportunity to participate in critical girl leadership experiences that help them thrive now and in the future.

of Distinction from Wichita, Kan., Reeny Botros, also spoke about her Girl Scout journey and how her interest in STEM and fashion led to her Gold Award for her Catwalk Coding program. The luncheon GSUSA CEO Sylvia Acevedo and the 2018 Juliette’s Pearls recognized Legacy Leadership Society Committee. Pearl honorees Beverly Fiedler and Shirley Mosher for their years of dedication to Girl Scouting. Senator Nancy Landon Kassebaum Baker served as honorary chair.

A huge thank you to our luncheon More than 200 people attended sponsors, listed below! the third-annual Juliette’s Pearls Leadership Society Luncheon on Feb. 21, 2018 at the Drury Plaza Hotel Broadview. Guests were inspired by Keynote Speaker Sylvia Acevedo, CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA, who spoke about her journey from being a young Girl Scout in New Mexico, to working for NASA as a rocket scientist, to leading the next generation of girls as the “Chief Girl Scout.” She emphasized the need for STEM programming for girls, so they too can achieve their dreams and help change the world in the process. 2018 legacy pearls Beverly Fiedler In Memorium

Beverly lived a life full of compassion, humor, persistence, and commitment. During World War II, she was the first female window clerk in the Wichita Post Office. At the age of 20, she opened and operated a restaurant, with her father, in downtown Wichita named “Beverly’s Cafeteria”. She successfully operated this business until her marriage to Edmond Fiedler in 1950. Together they had three children, Ellen, Ann, and Fritz. Bev’s greatest joy centered around raising these three children. When Beverly’s daughters, Ellen and Annie, became Brownies, she became involved and enlisted her neighbor, Joann Kamas, to help as well. Beverly was a troop leader for many years and especially provided guidance to the members of Senior Mariner Troop #178, while letting the troop members sand and varnish the paddles, rudder and running board for their troop’s sailboat in her garage. Beverly also helped the troop members write, edit, and produce “Spotlight on Seniors”. This publication, printed on a mimeograph machine, highlighted all of the current activities of every Senior Girl Scout Troop in the Wichita Area. Beverly served on the Wichita Area Girl Scout Council’s Board of Directors, as a Wider Opportunities Selection Committee Member, and she accompanied the Senior Girl Scouts from the Wichita Area attending the last

National Girl Scout Roundup in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho in 1965. Beverly was a charter member of Girl Scout Alumni and Friends. She was active in many community organizations such as Botanica, Eastern Star, and the Wichita Symphony Women’s Association. She established the Wichita Chapter of Parents and Families of Lesbians and Gays. As a Troop Leader, Board Member, Camper, Chaperone, Sailboat Navigator, Committee Member, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Friend, Confidante, Sports Enthusiast, and Community Leader…Beverly Fiedler truly embodied the Girl Scout Promise and inspired us all!

Shirley Mosher "Make New Friends but Keep the Old, One is Silver and the Other Gold…" This is one of the first songs Shirley learned when she joined Girl Scouts in 1941 at age 7. Shirley was a Girl Scout during World War II and remembers going door to door to collect items for the war effort. She continued through Intermediate and Senior Girl Scouts. Her mother, Marjorie Coombs, was one of her co-leaders and was also on the Girl Scout Board of Directors. Shirley was married in 1956 to Richard Mosher. Together they have three children, Sandy, Ron, and Sheryl. When Sandy began 2nd grade, Shirley

volunteered to be her Brownie leader. She continued on with both daughters as Brownie, Junior, and Cadette Leader. The troops enjoyed many Girl Scout activities, including frequent camping outings starting with Little House and Camp Seikooc. After the girls became seasoned campers, they enjoyed the ultimate challenge, “roughing it”, at Land’s End at Camp Wiedemann. During these years, she also volunteered as Troop Organizer, Neighborhood Chairman, Cookie Chairman, and Camp Promoter. Shirley had an extensive professional Girl Scout career as: Field Director, Older Girl Program and Planning Board Director, Camp Director, Program Director and Trainer, Membership Director, Special Needs Coordinator, Camp Coordinator, and Old Cowtown Coordinator. Shirley also had the opportunity to serve as Interim Executive Director. Shirley retired from Girl Scouts after 22 years, in 1996. Since retirement, she has remained active with Girl Scout Alumni & Friends in many ways, including as President of this dedicated group of Girl Scout supporters. Shirley spent ten years working on our Council’s Historical Collection now housed at Starwoods Outdoor Center. Shirley Mosher has been involved with Girl Scouting for more than 70 years. She is a Lifetime Member of Girl Scouts. During her years in Girl Scouting, she has met many wonderful people, and thus she personifies the song, Make New Friends but Keep the Old.

Thank you Spirit AeroSystems!

To encourage the Innovator in every G.I.R.L., Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland partnered with Spirit AeroSystems Inc. for an evening of STEM experiences, “Innovation Soars with Spirit”. Coordinated to coincide with our visit from Girl Scouts of the USA's rocket scientist turned CEO Sylvia Acevedo, on Tuesday, Feb. 20, Spirit helped us welcome 275 girls and parents to a night full of activities such as coding games, circuit building, fatigue testing and much more. The WATC FutureMaker Mobile Learning Lab greeted girls at the front door while Meritrust Credit Union and Exploration Place joined the fun to teach girls all about engineering and science. Gold Award Girl Scout Maureen “Reeny” Botros held miniature sessions of her Catwalk Coding program, showing girls they don’t have to sacrifice their femininity to work in the STEM industry. Sylvia Acevedo spent the evening sharing the story of Girl Scouts’ impact on her life and career, explaining how a night under the stars at camp led her to building her first rocket and would later encourage her work for NASA’s Jet Propulsion lab. We thank every Girl Scout, parent and our community partners for making this evening possible. Let’s continue to elevate every G.I.R.L. and Innovator of the future!

Piloting the future of cybersecurity Securing digital information is a growing concern for many. Social media, online gaming, online banking, and even automatic vacuum robots for your home all deal with varying levels of pesonal information. How do you protect yourself in the digital age? Girl Scouts are tackling the issue with a new Cybersecurity badge program. Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland is one of just three councils of 112 across the country piloting the program. In the midst of this, a new relationship has developed between our council and the 184th Intelligence Wing of the Kansas Air National Guard. Together, we

are teaching young girls how cybersecurity affects their everyday lives and what they can do to safeguard their information and therefore their future. Our 12 pilot troops and two Girls Who Code troops were invited to the Wichita Area Technical College’s National Center for Aviation Training on Saturday, Jan. 26. They played a binary coding game and launched into activities detailing cyber attacks and how to dismantle them. Both partners in the project are looking forward to the future and growing the leaders of tomorrow, Girl Scouts!

Pack your trunks, NEW Summer Camp Options

You asked, we listened! To provide a wider range of camp experiences for our girls, we are introducing new day, residential, troop, and travel options. Whether your Girl Scout is a new or veteran camper, Daisy or Ambassador, she will find many exciting summer camp options to choose from. Campers are eligible to attend camps that are for the grade they have completed. For example, a girl who has just completed first grade can attend camps that are for or include Daisies. A girl who has just finished third grade can choose from camps in the Brownie age range.

Resident Camp*

Is your camper a Junior or older? She can eat, sleep, and live the camp life for a full week, from Sunday afternoon through Saturday morning. She will choose from activities such as shooting sports, sailing, leather working, high adventure, wood carving, and many others to create her own schedule based on her interests. During the week, she will earn badges, practice camp skills, and cook over the campfire, with plenty of time for swimming, relaxing, and getting to know her new camp friends. Campers will be staying primarily in cabins or

platform tents, and can request to be in the same unit as up to two friends at registration. We will do our best to keep troops together. Troop leaders who are interested in attending as camp chaperones should contact the GSKH office. Limited volunteer opportunities are available. (These camps will have transportation, please see box).

This option can be selected at registration, and we will let you know two weeks before camp whether or not the minimum number has been met.

Mini Resident Camp*

*TRANSPORTATION

This option is for Brownies and Juniors who would like to try out the resident camp experience without staying the full week. Campers arrive Sunday afternoon in time for dinner and opening campfire, and spend three days/three nights swimming, playing, learning, and earning badges. Your camper can choose from activities such as painting, shooting sports, ecology, textiles, basket weaving, and much more to fill her days with the activities that interest her. Campers will be staying in cabins or platform tents and can

it's time for camp! Day Camps

For Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors who prefer a day camp experience, we are bringing back the popular Mermaid Day Camp as well as offering Enchanted Forest Day Camp. Day camps are Mon.-Fri., 8:30 a.m.4:30 p.m., with busing provided from and back to the Wichita Girl Scout office each day. Day campers can choose from a variety of activities depending on their age and interest, including swimming, archery, basket weaving, climbing, team building, and boating.

Other Camps & Programs request to be in the same unit as up to two friends at registration. We will do our best to keep troops together. Troop leaders who are interested in attending as camp chaperones should contact the GSKH office; limited volunteer opportunities are available. (These camps will have transportation, please see box).

Troop Camp

If your troop would like to go to camp together, troop camp is a great option! Troop leaders and/or troop support volunteers must register and attend to meet adult-to-girl camping ratios for their troop. You will arrive Friday evening and depart Sunday morning. Troops will spend evenings and overnights together, and during the day, girls can choose from a variety of camp activities and badge work based on their interests. Troops will be tent camping and cooking some meals outdoors so they should plan to bring their own tents, camping gear, and outdoor cooking equipment.

Travel Camps*

This summer, we are offering two travel camp options for girls in grades 6-12: a kayak trip down the Arkansas River, and Fossil Hunters at Camp Four Winds that includes day trips around the state to areas of geological interest. Spaces are limited, so register early! (These camps will have transportation, please see box).

In addition to these camp options, we have several specialty camps and programs. These include Family Camp, Daisy Day, Starwoods Stomp Adult & Me Day, and American Girl Twilight Camp. There are also several Girl Scout partner programs with local museums and businesses during the summer.

Just for Older Girls

If you are looking for some older-girl-only leadership experiences, join us at camp! The Get Certified Camp at the end of July offers you the opportunity to have fun at camp while getting certifications you can use throughout the year, including First Aid/ CPR and Babysitting. If you enjoy working with younger girls, consider becoming a Program Aide or Counselor in Training this summer. Program Aide is a volunteer position and Counselors in Training receive a stipend. For more information about becoming a PA or CIT, call your council office or email info@gskh.
