Not e Fr om Robin Dear Silver Beauties, The journey to silver isn't for the faint of heart. I liken the journey to my entrepreneur journey as it's constantly challenging me in ways I'm not always sure how to handle. Just when I think I've got something figured out, another something pops up and I've got to dig deep to find my next step. It's a bold statement to go against the grain. And, embracing aging and going gray sometimes feels like a battle. You're going up against generations of women being told we had to strive for youth to be relevant. It's scary, yet exhilarating as you find yourself questioning and redefining many thoughts that might not have necessarily been yours in the first place. The push back shouldn't be surprising, yet daily women are sharing how surprised they are by someone's negative reaction to their personal choice. A choice to embrace gray and their age isn't a demand that anyone else around them has to do the same. We're not attempting to coerce you into going gray, so it's crazy how perfect strangers, and your closest friends will suddenly speak to you in ways you'd never dream of speaking to someone. This issue we look at some of the challenges that happen on this journey; How to handle the comments, how to break it to your stylist you're going gray, and taking a look at hair loss as we age. We've got regulars Leah, Joli, Tina , Julie and Mina bringing you their silver goodness again, with a few new members to our she-pack that you're sure to enjoy. The journey isn't always easy, but you're never in it alone. Surround yourself with the silver communities available on social networks or grab a cup of java or a good tequila and kick your feet up with us and get lost in our pages!. Head over to tangledsilvermagazine.com and become a site member for free to join us as we look to bring monthly video calls, personal care training's and more to the community. Our Digital and Print Magazine subscribers can access past issues and special events from there too.

EYEBROWS

Writer

Robin Salls

You?re experiencing a cornucopia of silver; your colors are on point for the shades of gray gracing your crown, you?ve figured out which products work best for your strands and you?re ignoring the naysayers questioning your reasoning behind going gray. It?s a great time in your silver journey!

That is until you suddenly discover your BROW S are having their own party and don't bother to invite you. Tangledsilvermagazine.com

EMBRACE | You 13 They?re unruly, sparse in places and now have the nerve to either stay dark, so you get accused of dying them, or going gray/white leaving you looking like you don't have any eyebrows at all Decades of going with the ?times?where appearance ranged from drawn on, plucked super thin, bushy. etc? has left many of us confused how to handle the brows of today. Not to mention that some of those looks may have led to some of our brow concerns of today. W HAT ARE THOSE CONCERNS? OVER-TW EEZING - Stop it! Over tweezing and plucking wrong can lead to permanently damaging hair follicles, meaning the hair won?t grow back there if you pluck wrong, rupturing the tiny blood vessel(derma vessel) that keeps your hair healthy and growing back. RIGHT WAY TO TW EEZE - Rather than plucking straight out, you should take a finger and pull the skin tight (think of when you last got your brows done professionally) and tweeze in the direction the hair is growing, typically upward or towards your temple. TRIMMING BROW S - Unruly brows are a pain, but simply plucking them could lead to our first problem of over-tweezing. WIth a light hand, try brushing those unruly hairs upward with a tool like a spoolie and slightly trimming with a good pair of scissors just above the brow line, not on it. You want the hairs to still have a bit of bend in them to keep looking natural and soft.

HAIR LOSS AND THINNING BROW S - With aging, especially entering into menopause we?re not producing hormones of our youth and the lower levels of some hormones can cause us to start loosing our hair or even notice a thinning that includes our brows. Just as keeping your skin moisturized, you want to keep your eyebrows moisturized for the same benefits. Brow hair loss can also be caused by medical or skin issues, so if you?re not sure, it's best to check with your

doctor. There are some natural remedies that have been proven to be useful for hair growth like olive oil and castor oil. After hearing of a fellow silver sister who used Pura D?OR 100% pure organic Jamaican Black Castor Oil for her lashes and brows, this writer was compelled to give it a try. I did see an improvement within about 3 months of daily use. This is still part of my nightly routine. TW INNING - If you expect your brows to match perfectly you?re in for a tough ride. While they should be similar in shape and size, cut yourself some slack when they?re not identical and embrace what you?ve got. Going crazy trying to match them up will most likely lead to eyebrows that draw more attention than you actually wanted. Understanding concerns is helpful, but it still leaves the shaded area for those who are experiencing color challenges. Our brows play a pivotal role as they become more of a focal point as your hair naturally ages in color and texture. Some find while their hair is going silver, their dark brows are holding on strong. Others find their brows almost disappear as they want to win the race to gray first. Figuring out how to get the right eyebrow shape and color leaves some of us with nightmares of our grandmothers sporting Ronald McDonald brows!

Enter cosmetic companies, like EyeEmbrace who help solve part of the problem by creating and supplying items like pencils, powders and tools to help shape your brows while Influencers are helping with tips on shape and techniques. But, there?s a lot out there and finding the right color solutions for you might feel daunting. And, for women with graying eyebrows, choices can feel very limited. When I was introduced to EyeEmbrace by another silver sister, Katie, owner of the blog Katie Goes Platinum, I was intrigued. They were unique in that they specialize in pencils and powders for women of INSPIRE 2022

gray and red hair shades. These groups find matching their brows typically harder than most. Immediately I headed over to EyeEmbrace.com and learned they currently have shades used separately or together that really make a difference in a silver gal?s brow choice. Shades ranging from a very light gray to darker gray in warm and cool tones, along with tools to perfect your look. Whether you prefer a self-sharpening pencil or a wood pencil, they offer options in both that have your filler on one end and a spoolie on the other. The wooden pencils come with their own sharpener, along with a spoolie brush. For a softer look, they have a range of gray eyebrow powders that you can pair with their custom-made Pro Grip Angled Eyebrow Brush as well. For a woman whose eyebrows are fairly dark with wisps of gray and a few sparse areas I love the Liz shade, which is the darkest of the available offerings. The cream pencil goes on smoothly, allowing for easy strokes and the spoolie softens out and leaves a look that is natural, while keeping my little secret (well, not a secret anymore) that I?m using makeup to enhance my brows. I love that they are cruelty free, vegan and

sourced with high quality ingredients. They also offer a Pro-Lash Mascara and Pro-Tip Eyeliner Pen which makes for one stop shopping too. While there are other products on the market, I encourage you to take a look at the EyeEmbrace difference. I love discovering companies that are as unique as our silver community while also helping to fill a need many of us find ourselves in. That?s why we?ve partnered together to bring you tips and more in future issues, as well as on our social channels to help you define the perfect brows for you. W HAT'S NEXT? If you?re like me, you?re probably wondering about how to decipher shaping your brows next. It?s great to have some ABC?s to get you started as we?ve mentioned, but have you seen all the different brows on all the different women? No two of us are alike, but there are some suggestions based on your face?s shape that might help you perfect your brow look. If you have a rounder face, a higher arch might be best for you. For those with diamond or heart shapes try a rounder brow look. Oval gals might find their best brows have a little bit of an arch, but nothing too dramatic, while Squared faced gals may find a slightly more angled brow suits them best. And, when it comes to thin or bushy? you decide, not anyone else. I?ve rocked fuller brows most of my life and certainly in the 80?s when Brooke Shields eyebrows defined the times. My thinning eyebrows of age are a bit of a challenge, but with the right knowledge and products, I?m finding the best look for myself today. And, for today, that?s a win in my silver journey. Eyebrows are like pesky little sisters? they drive you bonkers, yet somehow you figure out how to live with them because they aren?t going anywhere! Live confidently with your eyebrows.

MANAGING HAIR LOSS BEFORE, DURING & AFTER The American Academy of Dermatologists say it's normal to lose anywhere between 50 to 100 strands of hair per day. So, we shake off the hair in our brushes to the normalcy of daily living. That is until you start noticing your cleaning your hairbrush far more frequently, the shower drain is catching way more hair and you've started noticing either thinning hair sections around your face or the part in your hair seems to look wider than before. You tell yourself that your imaging things. Your imagination takes over at this point and does one of two things; TangledSIlverMagazine.com

EMBRACE | You 19

She either has you living in La La Land or she?s grabbed you by the face sounding the alarms that life will never be the same because you cannot pull off the stylish bald look. Damn menopause. Damn peri-menopause. Just damn it all. Suddenly every strand of hair in your environment has to be accounted for as your stress level skyrockets to unfathomable levels. This is when you need to pinch yourself, pull up your big girl panties and deal with the normalcy of aging. Pull yourself out of the rabbit hole. Wonderland is pretty, but even Alice had to get a grip. INSPIRE 2022

Most women will experience a degree of hair loss (not just on your head) associated with menopause. The drop in our hormone levels that begin during perimenopause continuing through our post menopause years doesn?t always play nice. Estrogen and progesterone affect the rate of hair growth, the volume of each strand and even the rate of hair shedding we experience. It?s a frustrating time as you wait patiently, or not so patiently to know where your levels will balance out naturally or otherwise. Lifestyle changes revolving around eating healthy and exercising to reduce stress, along with avoiding harsh hair-care routines, can encourage a healthier scalp with less hair loss. YOU ARE W HAT YOU EAT Proper nutrition plays a key role. Eating a well balanced diet of Lean proteins, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals will help give you the nutrients to aid in hair loss and reduction. Think citrus fruits, red peppers, leafy greens, tomatoes, carrots, salmon, egg yolks, cheese, berries, yogurt. EXERCISE FOR STRESS Stress lurks in the corners of your mind zapping your endorphin and hormone levels every chance they get. Find ways that help YOU reduce stress. Meditation, yoga and breathwork are great ways to lower stress. TangledSilverMagazine.com

Robin Salls, @tangledsilver wants to empower women at any age to embrace their grays and celebrate them. She's not anti-color, but anti anyone telling women they have to color in order to be vibrant. Let's change the narrative on gray.

EMBRACE | You 21 But, it?s okay if your way to relieve stress is a 10 mile bike ride or kickboxing. The point is to find ways that help you kick stress to the curb, which aids in hormone leveling as well as your overall health. AVOID HARSH HAIR CARE Take a break from over shampooing or using heat tools on the daily. Pay attention to your brushes. Replace them when bristles are broken or tips are warped as they cause more damage than good at those points. Look for moisturizing shampoos. Focus on conditioning your ends and work your way up to just lightly conditioning your scalp. Use cooler shower temperatures to protect your hair follicles. Replace cotton and satin pillowcases with 100% mulberry silk ones to limit friction to your strands while sleeping. Check. Check. Check. You think you?ve got those covered, so why are you still losing so much hair? Try checking in with your care provider and reviewing any medications you might be taking, as some medications can lead to hair concerns. Rule out any underlying health concerns that could be adding to hair loss.

Jamaican black castor oil. If you?re just starting your journey to gray, these could be great options to give a try as they will nourish your scalp and strands as you massage them in. That said, as oils they have some natural coloring that could lead to discoloration, just as overuse of purple shampoo can lead to purple hues, so be aware of giving these options a try. As a sister with darker eyebrows and lashes than the strands on my head, I still go to the Jamaican black castor oil nightly to encourage eyelash and eyebrow growth. Hair loss is part of the aging journey but it needn?t stop you in your tracks. Heck, the idea of never shaving my legs again has me dancing around the room, yet I also don?t want to part with anymore of the strands on my head than I have too. That?s where a little research, a bit of experimentation and acceptance of dna and current hormone levels learn how to play together. Here?s to your hair health and loving yourself through your own eyes.

Other things to think about adding to your hair regimen are hair growth vitamins with biotin and folic acid that may stimulate the hair follicles while fortifying the hair strands to help prevent breakage and shedding. They typically come in pill or gummy form. Another option would be hair growth serums. Preferably drug free, natural ones that work to block the DHT Hormone (hormone-related to severe hair loss) while increasing blood flow to hair follicles. I personally use a combination of Kerotin hair gummies and their Intensive Growth Drops that appear to be leading to less hair loss in the shower and my brushes. I?ve also experimented in what some call old wives tales with natural remedies such as Olive oil and pure organic INSPIRE 2022

Have you been thinking of going gray but are unsure how to approach the conversation with your stylist? Or have you already had the conversation and it didn?t go so well? Here are some tips on navigating the dialogue. Before getting into the ?How To?let?s get into the ?WHY?. Let?s start with ?WHY?a stylist might freak out by a client announcing they want to go gray. BREAD AND BUTTER It starts in the first days of cosmetology school. When stylists begin learning about hair color, the first thing they?re taught is that single process, gray coverage services are ?the bread and butter?of the business. Historically, it?s been considered the most reliable source of income. After the losses hair professionals have experienced through the pandemic (lockdowns, supply shortages, clients moving, heavy direct online marketing of products, inflation, illness, high demand, less double booking, staff shortages), many stylists have been hanging onto their sanity by a very fine thread/hair! This is ?WHY?a platinum proclamation may send them into a panicked tailspin.

JACK MARTIN Another reason ?WHY?a stylist may resist is because of the very talented, Jack Martin. If you haven't come across his work, he?s a stylist/colorist who is known for taking clients from previously colored hair to silver in one sitting. Many feel his rates are absurd but to be honest, as a fellow stylist, I feel they?re quite affordable for the skill, time and product it takes to achieve those results. Telling a regular client that a gray-in-a-day service will cost over $1000 and that maintenance will require additional investment in products and services for maintenance purposes? well, it?s nerve wracking. The fear of losing the client by simply giving them a fair yet expensive quote is overwhelming. Stylists have already lost so much in the past 2.5 years. Losing a beloved regular client is both financially and emotionally traumatic (because stylists love their clients!). CONFIDENCE Last but not least, not all stylists feel confident they can take clients gray in one sitting or maybe even over a span of time because it?s a new request that they?re not used to getting. It?s mortifying to tell a client they don?t know how to do it.

KNOW ?W HY? Clearly understanding and leading with ?WHY?one wants to go silver serves a double purpose; it helps the stylist understand and address the specific needs of the client while also understanding that they?re not ?breaking up?with them.

HERE ARE 6 STEPS TO FOLLOW FOR THE FIRST CONVERSATION #1 BOOK A COLOR CONSULTATION ? request at least a 15 minute color consultation that?s separate from your regular appointment. The receptionist or stylist should be aware that it?s specifically to discuss options for going silver. This provides THE stylist time to gather information. It shows that you?re looking for their guidance and are respectful of their time. #2 KEEP IT PROFESSIONAL? When beginning the conversation, expressing that the stylist?s work and relationship is appreciated and respected will set a professional and friendly tone for the conversation. #3 LEAD W ITH ?W HY?? Expressing ?WHY?you want to go gray will allow them to address your specific needs #4 PRESENT AN HONEST BUDGET ? Decide how much you?re willing to spend on the transition in terms of initial appointment, maintenance appointments, and at-home care. #5 PRACTICE PATIENCE ? It may take the stylist some time to think about what the best approach will be for your particular needs, budget TangledSilverMagazine.com

and your ?WHY?. Allow them getting back to you with solutions for the transition and feel free to take your time in deciding what works best for you. #6 AGREE TO A PLAN ? Once you?ve considered the options, make a plan and go for it! ?But what if my stylist resists??? Have them read the following! SO, YOUR CLIENT WANTS TO GO SILVER Your beloved regular who?s been seeing you religiously Snow wants to transition to their natural hair color. With all that?s happened in the past 2.5 years, this can cause some serious panic. Especially if you?ve been getting a lot more of these requests lately and you?ve experienced a lot of emotional and/or financial stress due to the pandemic. Let?s be real. The current silver hair trend goes against what we were taught in beauty school so it?s understandable to want to resist it. But as stylists, it?s our job to adapt to trends and this is no exception.

SUPPORT Now, we can act from a place of fear (of losing revenue and possibly a client), or we can act from a place of support and opportunity. Acting from a place of support is about providing options. It does NOT involve comments such as ?men don?t like gray hair!?, ?you?re too young to go gray?, ?you?ll look old?or even worse ?I?m going to lose

EM BRACE | You so much money!?. If a client is ready to accept their natural self, it?s important that their stylist, who has been given THE PRIVILEGE to enhance their appearance, helps to guide them. It?s up to stylists to find creative solutions within the parameters given to us to achieve beautiful results. I am by no means suggesting that we agree to unrealistic requests and expectations. Make no mistake, we are not magicians. But there?s a better chance of client retention if we operate from a place of support and options than criticism and rejection.

bond builders, etc? Clients going gray isn?t a loss. It?s still hair. It?s the same as before. Just? different.

MEET PIA

From a stylist who has been gray for years before the pandemic and who has successfully transitioned clients to silver over the past 2.5 years, here are some simple points to remember about hair when discussing options for going gray. Pia Vivas / Hair Friend

W E KNOW W HAT TO DO Lifting previously colored hair to achieve Jack Martin silver takes a lot of skill AND changes the texture and integrity of the hair. Additionally, naturally gray hair is often drier, coarser, grows in patchy, and can get a warm tint to it.

I?m a Curl Specialist with 15 years of experience, based in Santa Monica, California. I focus on cutting, coloring, styling and maintaining curly hair. Around 2012 I stopped coloring my own hair out of pure curiosity and sheer laziness. ?Cold turkey?was the method I chose so I walked around with a strong line of demarcation for about a year or so. Before the pandemic, there weren?t many

Maybe clients will no longer need single process color, but they will need you to help them manage their ?new? hair. As stylists we KNOW how to manage all of this and it involves what everything else has always involved: knowledge, skill, services and products. Comment s Happen. OWN IT!

So, you've FINALLY decided to ditch the dye and grow out your silver locks. What took you so long? Fear of the unknown? How will it look? What will people think? Being on the fence can be tough and make you feel vulnerable. I have always been a people pleaser, and a fixer by nature. Until I decided to let my gray hair take over, I was known for my big red hair and people expected to see that! I didn?t want to let them down! Friends and family would joke about me not having time to color, or tease that I?m getting older. I was told that gray hair would make me look too washed out, that I was too vain to go gray, that I couldn?t do it, and that my face looked too young to be framed by gray hair.

up to you. There is no right or wrong way to do it. It?s not always easy, and there are always bumps in the road, lessons to be learned, and a ton of confidence to gain! How exciting, RIGHT?

Those comments make you dive deep into your soul. They make you question who you are, and who you?re trying to please, and maybe why you?re trying to hide. Because of that, it took me a year to make the decision to go gray! During that year, my roots seemed to call to me like the drums in a Jumanji movie! Making the decision to ditch the dye has to be YOUR decision. How you transition to your natural hue is also TangledSIlverMagazine.com

How I?ve overcome t his, is by remembering t wo words ? OW N IT.

Any way you decide to do it - is the right way to do it.

I chose the cold turkey, long grow out process. If someone looked up at my demarcation line, I?d reach up and say ?oh yeah, I?m letting my gray grow out? .I?m so tired of trying to keep up with it!? Poof? it?s all out on the table. I don?t wait for the snarky negative comment, or the ?Why??.

If you?ve not talked with your family and friends about your plans to grow out your gray hair, or you?re in a conversation with a stranger where they?re distracted by your growing demarcation line, you may receive negative comments. How do we handle it gracefully?

Once I?ve made it known that it was my decision and BodyINSPIRE 2022

that I?m happy about it, I don?t get any negative feedback. However, I?m always happy to answer the ?How?s and when?s!" I?ve had two comments on my Instagram page where someone posted a line of barfy emojis, and another one that said ?it looks like a rat's nest? In my mind, they aren?t talking about the color of my hair, but instead the style of my hair, or heck, maybe even my face. Clearly it isn?t about my gorgeous silver hair that I cherish and am so proud of! You know what they say about opinions? .EVERYBODY HAS ONE. Does everyone have to have the same opinion? Not at all! I have friends and family that totally support my gray hair grow out, but aren?t ready for their own journey? and that?s ok. I will be here to cheer them on when they?re ready! Roots are roots till you embrace your gray? then it?s just hair. Age is just a number, and gray is just another hair color. This journey can be full of highs, and lows! There will be an abundance of internal growth such as; self worth, confidence, strength, encouragement, and liberation! I?m approaching the end of my transition. I will mourn my demarcation line, as it?s shown me just how far I?ve come. My journey has been nothing short of a positive. One that I wish I would have taken sooner! If you decide down the road that this journey isn?t for you? CHANGE it. You still have all the connections and friendships you?ve made along the way within the Silver Sister Community, and you?re still you! That growth and confidence doesn?t go away if you decide to dye your hair. You know who you are! There are no right or wrong turns in this journey. Bottom line is, it?s YOUR hair. BREAST CANCER

5 WAYS You Can Reduce Your Risk

Wr it er JulieKneafsey

EM BRACE | You

33

I read an amazing statistic the other day and it was this: a quarter of all breast cancers are preventable. A quarter! And the reason it?s amazing is that, when it comes to breast cancer in general, the numbers aren?t great. Women in the UK, Australia and the US, for example, have a one in 8 chance of developing it and the percentage chance increases as we age, with women over 55 having an increasingly higher risk. So to hear that 25% of these cases can be prevented is extremely good news.

Having had breast cancer twice, I hope to inspire you to future-proof your health...

It can seem that breast cancer develops indiscriminately at times. We all hear of people with the healthiest lifestyles imaginable, with no family history of the disease who still develop it. But there is also evidence that what we choose to put on, and in, our bodies and the general lifestyle we lead, can make a difference to our risk. So being proactive and taking steps to help before a problem starts is a smart way to work. Having had breast cancer twice, I hope to inspire you to future-proof your health by sharing a list of lifestyle changes I?m working through myself. They are small changes recommended by scientists that can help reduce our risk. It?s not often in life that ?small equals big?, but in this case, these changes may help to save your life.

Drink less alcohol -

-

It?s a hard one, but drink little or no alcohol or at least have a few alcohol-free days each week as alcohol is a serious risk factor. It increases the circulating oestrogen in your body, and this can increase your chance of developing breast cancer. It?s also a known risk for other cancers such as stomach and throat. I still have the odd G&T but am conscious of the risks and limit these. It?s not about ?never?drinking for me but being conscious of the amount.

Maint ain a healt hy weight and eat plent y of fresh produce -

Once you hit the menopause and your ovaries stop working, your fat cells become your main source of oestrogen and this can increase your risk, so it helps to keep your weight within a healthy range. INSPIRE 2022

-

Exercise can reduce the risk of cancer coming back if you?ve already had it, as well as being preventative if you?ve never had it. Love that! It reduces inflammation and stress and can boost your immune system so your body can recognise cells that may become cancerous and remove them.

Avoid processed meat s -

-

-

-

Try increasing your consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables ? organic if possible. Fibre helps with weight loss as it keeps you full for longer, and fresh fruit and veg contain valuable antioxidants which can help to balance the free radicals in your system. Free radicals are atoms that are present in all our bodies but need balancing as they can cause cell damage at a DNA level and potentially illness or cancer. Try to consume a whole food plant-based diet and kick out as many processed foods as you can. My rule of thumb is if I can?t understand/recognise what the ingredients are by their name (sodium benzoate?) and I can?t pop out and buy them at the supermarket easily, chances are they are not too good for me! By the way, vegetarians and vegans have a much lower chance of developing all cancers (I?m not vegan, but I eat a mainly plant-based diet). .

Excercise regularly

-

Exercise helps to lower body fat and helps to regulate circulating hormones such as oestrogen and insulin (which, at higher levels, can cause breast cells to divide more often and may lead to cancer).

TangledSilverMagazine.com

Use clean beaut y and household product s We are exposed to a large number of chemicals daily in our homes, gardens and at work. Our bodies have to deal with this ? it?s called a ?chemical burden?and we should try to reduce as it as much as we can. In particular, there are chemicals called EDCs (Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals) which can affect our natural oestrogen and increase risk. They are found in everyday products and last a long time in the environment. Try to avoid contact with: -

Fr eedom

The American Cancer Society says: ?? exercise is a breast-healthy habit?.What a good phrase!

The World Health Organisation has designated processed meats as a Class 1 carcinogen (which means they can cause cancer) and studies have found that if you eat them regularly, they are known to increase breast cancer risk by up to 9%. These are highly processed foods such as bacon, sausages and ham. Avoid these altogether or cut down at least.

Get to know your family history for cancers and illnesses if you are able. Ask for early screening if you are at high risk. Check your breasts every month on the same day ? the first of the month is a good choice as it?s easier to remember to do it. Have your check-ups and mammograms if you can. My second cancer was found on a mammogram and I didn?t feel a lump at all. Early diagnosis vastly increases your chance of surviving this terrible disease. See your doctor if you notice any odd lumps/bumps/thickening or discharge. Over 90% of lumps and bumps are benign (non-cancerous) but it?s worth getting checked out.

One final shocking st at ist ic ? ?One in ten of all new cancers diagnosed worldwide each year is a cancer of the female breast, and it is the most common cancer in women in both developing and developed areas. It is also the principal cause of death from cancer among women globally.?(WHO)

Remember, small changes can equal a big outcome and it?s worth taking the time for the time you will potentially get back!

GROWNG OLD Writer Leah Rachel Friedman

IS NOT FOR THE WEAK TangledSilverMagazine.com

EM BRACE | You

Growing old is not for t he weak. It takes fortitude and grit to make it through all the twists and turns of life. During the years leading up to the cessation of hormones, our bodies challenge us. It seems as though the internal thermostat has been tampered with and broken forever! This initial response is standard. After a lifetime of getting comfortable in the bodies we have been given, it suddenly betrays all we?ve come to expect. But things don?t have to stay this way. What we know now about fitness has been long learned through time and research. Paying attention to what happens before, during and after hormones stop their effects is a benefit we reap from times past. We understand now this phase of life is exactly that, a phase. It will pass. During those moments, when you feel the need to crawl away from yourself, literally out of your own skin, is particularly at those times that you do not concede your autonomy. The responsibility for holistic health is ours alone. We know that drugs serve a limited purpose. They are most often a band-aid for a problem not necessarily the cure. Look at the list of side effects and you will understand how drugs solve one problem while creating another. For this reason we must always do research and be responsible for our own health. For most of you who know me, you know I live by the words ?Exercise is Medicine?. I believe this to be 100% true. It is through diet and exercise that we keep our bodies in the best

39

shape possible. This includes not doing anything unsafe, the definition of preventative health. While good health and fitness is not a cure all, it helps more than harms plus the side effects benefit your mind and body in ways you may not even see. Exercise is something that affects your mood, your body chemistry, and of course your physiology. With movement and resistance you can turn a weak joint into a stronger one. You can change your body alignment through training specific muscle groups while simultaneously stretching others. A change in neurological recruitment patterns, done through changes in movement, can rewire your brain. The benefit list is long but not omnipotent. That is to say, we can only do our best utilizing movement, flexibility, rest, nutrition, etc., to the best of our abilities at any age and with any given limitation. No matter what road blocks may exist in your own life, exercise can improve your situation. Strength training is great for muscle fiber recruitment, creating a change in neuron transmission, improving physical strength and specifically improving imbalances or weakness. For instance, after hip replacement surgery, (and physical therapy) doing exercises that stretch and strengthen the glutes, core, legs and feet can guard against progressive hip weakness. Spraining an ankle causes trauma to the ankle joint. Conditioning the calf muscles, smaller muscles in the feet and balance exercises can compensate for the injury while promoting healing. Neurologically challenged INSPIRE 2022

individuals, such as those with dementia or parkinson?s would benefit from exercises that change patterns or stimulate the nervous system with textures and touches. Additionally, stroke victims benefit greatly from stretching muscles that contract or atrophy.

intentionally causing the body to sweat through exercising helps regulate the malfunction caused by diminishing hormones. It is also an opportunity to cope with this mechanism. Tolerating the discomfort of physical exercise or hot flashes or both bolsters resilience in dealing with anatomical changes. As we know, muscle tone begins to decline in our 20?s if we do not exercise; however, it?s never too late to begin. Whether you begin with something moderate like yoga, pilates, tai chi, or some other form of mind/body exercise, or something more intense such as weight training, your muscles will respond to any stimuli. I want to reiterate, It?s never too late to begin a new exercise program or mix up the routine you currently employ.

There is a way to improve just about any condition with the right amount of exercise, resistance, frequency, and intensity. Is it a cure? No, but it does just as much if not more than any drugs will do for treatment. Additionally, strength training helps to manage stress. With all the changes you experience in your internal thermostat, working out will increase your core temperature signaling the body to cool itself through sweating. MEET ANGEL 62 | CPG Entrepreneur | Silver Since 1968 ?1968?is not a typo. My Silverista voyage actually started at the age of 8 while my mother was still combing my hair. Like a birthmark visible to the world, my silver strands and I have grown up together. My silver became much more prominent after junior high school and my hair became somewhat of a novelty to family and friends. And although my early silver was unusual, I distinctly remember older women telling me that silver was a sign of wisdom, and I was very comfortable with my hair ? until my daughter was born? It had never occurred to me to hide or cover my silver. However, during my second pregnancy, the silver had spread to my temples, and I began to develop the ?silver halo?. For the first time in my life, I felt like people were actively encouraging me to hide my silver. The final straw came when a stranger asked if my infant daughter was my granddaughter! Standing next to me was the friend who for years had been telling me to color my silver. She looked at me, smiled and said, ?I told you.

@angelucornelius | TEXAS Now cover it up!? For years, I colored my hair a lovely shade of auburn? and I hated every moment. Each morning when I looked in the mirror, I felt like I was drifting further and further away from my true, authentic self. Mark Zuckerberg was still in grade school and there were no supportive communities of Silveristas on Instagram and Facebook to encourage women to proudly embrace their own unique version of beautiful silver hair. After some initial trepidation, I took a deep breath and decided to cut it all off! Was it scary? A little? but the decision to finally free myself and get back to the real/best me was an exhilarating feeling! After two decades, I?m extremely grateful for my silver journey because I now realize that it was never about my hair. Today, Silveristas are rejecting the notion that our version of beauty must be anything other than what we want it to be for ourselves. The t idal wave of Silverist as t hat have come and are coming is just a t est ament t o women increasingly embracing t he freedom t o approach life on our t erms. Our silver crowns are our individual and collect ive expression of power. Join t he movement ! TangledSilverMagazine.com

MEET LAUREEN 54| Passion Pursuer | Silver since 2021 The first message I ever received about grey hair was etched into my subconscious by a hairstylist when I was 16 years old. ?You have beautiful black hair, but it?s going to be a problem someday when the grey comes in.? The compliment was an ominous warning of the struggle awaiting, and at 30 years old I began dyeing my hair without questioning it. Eventually after two decades it became necessary for my daughter and husband to assist in chasing my roots by painting the black dye on the back of my head. I often wondered how long this could go on. Would it be until my last breath? I felt stuck in an endless cycle unaware of the underlying resentment and self-criticism it fostered. At the height of the pandemic I started dyeing my hair every two weeks. Initially at the beginning of lockdown I was curious about how much grey I actually had. But after an inch of stark contrast appeared I returned to the box of dye in an attempt to regain a sense of control during an

@glowupsilver | NEW JERSEY unpredictable time. As a result, in January of 2021 I had an allergic reaction and was forced to stop. Over the years if anyone ever suggested that I should consider going grey, I would answer ?no way, never!? Grey was ugly, old, giving up and caving in. Suddenly at 53 I was facing the stigma I feared most while trying to cope with the many changes of midlife. I couldn?t accept what seemed like losing another facet of my identity. I cried, searched the web, called friends, and organic salons looking for a safe way to continue coloring my hair. After several weeks dye free I decided to move forward with the process of lowlights that would ease the transition by keeping chemicals off my scalp. I hated it. At this point I had connected with Jane, an inspiring silver sister on instagram who encouraged me to listen to my inner voice, ?Just go for it, you?ve wanted a fun short haircut for a long time!? 17 months later, I?m grateful to my body for resisting the dye allowing me to challenge the resistance of my mind. It was t he unraveling of life long dist ort ed percept ions t hat was t he real problem, not my grey hair.

MEET JULIE 49| Pastry Chef/Chef Insturctor | Silver Since 2021 At 14, I found my first gray, by 20 the stylist informed me I was 80% gray. No one ever knew my dirty little secret. I religiously visited my Mecca every 4 weeks, with root crayon or spray to hide any errant soldiers in between. As a pastry chef /chef instructor, my hair is up most of the time, so it was easy to throw on a bandanna & hide my shame if necessary. Then COVID paid a visit & the USA shut down for almost 2 months. It was easy to relax my regimen at home, with just myself & my daughter to witness. I started experimenting with hairstyles (mostly braids) that would show the stark contrast in a cool way. My biggest discovery at this point was, I wasn't gray, I was white! I was really getting into my grow out. Restrictions started to lift & I ventured out into the world. My

@greycefull | New York boyfriend at the time had a reaction that changed everything. Mind you, I escaped a 25 year abusive marriage with a narcissist- I was finally free to be me. I lost 130 lbs, I was learning to take care of myself, really settling into it, so his reaction really threw me a curve. He handed me a check & said, "PLEASE, go fix your hair." I was floored. It really rocked me & I fell into old habits & I caved. I colored my hair for 5 more months but I no longer felt that joy we get on a fresh color day, the sense of freedom from discovery we enjoy for about a week before our roots re-emerge. I act ually felt fake, dishonest - t o myself. I was not being aut hent ically ME! The relationship quickly went south & Jan 20,2021 was my last hair appointment.I saw all these beautiful women with silver hair & I wanted to join their club. TRUE COLORS, AGING GRACEFULLY (that's where I came up with my Insta name) and AUTHENTICALLY ME. II have never been more proud of the person I am. INSPIRE 2022

MEET JUDITH 49 | Nurse | Silver Since 2020 A Peruvian girl living in New York ?The city that never sleeps" and I think that goes with me too. Hello girls, my name is Judith, better known as silverjudy20, nurse, 49 years young, proud mom and happily married. I am a woman who likes to do everything. I always keep busy, my week flies by, I work 50 hours a week, cook and organize the house, and to all this I add the hours I dedicate to IG. . Then to rest until the next day, sometimes I wish the days had 30 hours instead of 24 and I can assure you that I don't miss all the hours I wasted in the beauty salon dying my hair. It was approximately 25 years, I could say almost half of my life dying my hair, hours lost...plus how much poison, how much damage I did to my hair and my body, using chemicals. At first I did it for "fashion" trying to look different, but for almost 20 years I was trying to cover my gray hair, especially the ?blessed?white streak that I hated so much back then.

@silverjudy20 | New York | Peru For many years I wasted my time, money and damaged my health. I spent hours in the salon, if I remember 5 hours every 6 weeks. But as we all know, after the first wash the gray hair is already there. I realized that It is a waste of money and time to spend hundreds of dollars and hours in the beauty salon. So I decided to start buying a little box of dye at the pharmacy, for only $20 and in 30 minutes I touched up the roots. However, the last five years every two weeks my hair began to suffer the consequences, looked mistreated, dry and began to fall out. I still believed that I was "too young to go gray" and thought that I would be the only girl to go gray "so young" I started looking for information on google and YouTube. Surprise!!! Thousands and thousands of beautiful women of all ages, from all over the world. It was there that I finally decided to stop dyeing, January 29 2020, at the age of 47. I opened my Instagram account and found wonderful women who inspired me, Thanks to the support of each one of them, my son and my husband I was able to complete my transition. CELEBRATE | You 55 MEET LYNN 51 | Occupational Therapist | Silver since 2020 I have had a love-hate relationship with my hair for most of my life. Like most Generation X women, I was raised on beauty ad campaigns that taught me to ?wash that gray right outta my hair,?and that ?only her hairdresser knows for sure.?Gray hair was to be covered, hidden from view the minute it showed up. I grew up believing that gray hair was bad, and I planned to dye my hair before I ever saw my first gray hair, ?because I?m worth it.? I was also raised on SEVENTEEN magazine, where most of the models I admired had blonde, stick-straight hair. I had neither. Mine was dark brown, thick, frizzy, and coarse and it would take on an actual life of its own in the Florida humidity. It wasn?t straight, it wasn?t curly. It was the 80s, where big hair and perms were actually a thing. I was Sarah Jessica Parker in Square Pegs with big, brushed out triangular-shaped frizzy hair, and I spent a

@gr ayaw h ile | FLORIDA good portion of adolescence feeling quite? ugly. Into adulthood, I began having my hair professionally highlighted into the 90s chunky stripes of the Friends era, and I finally learned how to straighten it. I sacrificed hair health for style and color. My first silvers showed up around my hairline in my late 20s. Over the next 2 decades I was told by several different stylists that I didn?t have ?enough?gray to go gray, that I needed to be X % gray to go gray. So I highlighted, colored, and eventually home dyed it to keep up. It looked flat and fake, like I took a sharpie marker to my head. In 2020, my curiosity got the better of me, and decided I would let my silver streaks grow for 6 months. Giving myself an end point made it seem doable. I immersed myself within the silver sisters community, and while I was coveting the full heads of white and silver hair, I began t o realize t hat my ?not silver enough?salt and pepper hair was uniquely mine. I finally stopped wanting to look like someone else. I was ok looking like me. And I kinda like her. I?m not letting myself go, I?m letting myself BE!

I ended up sticking with the red box color. My mallen streak appeared in 2006 when I was 32. My Mother had passed away unexpectedly at the age of 51. She was my best friend. BE | In spir ed Combining her passion and business knowledge she quickly went to work establishing her brand, named affectionately with a nod to her childhood roots, Maison 276. The company offers products created by Angel for Hair, body and skin care, but has especially gained momentum in the silver sister community for their 3 Step Hair care system for keeping silver, white and blonde hair looking and feeling its best without the use of purple shampoos and harsh chemicals. A ?Silverista?sister, Angel?s journey into silver started at an early age with a stint of coloring that led her back to a place of embracing her natural white. Like many letting their natural strands shine she found herself on the merry go round of products to help against yellowing. Struggling to find products that met her needs, her ?do it yourself?spirit found new motivation to just create them herself. She went to work in her kitchen with plant based ingredients and voila, the products were born. While the products are fabulous, more importantly are the overall messages this beauty brand shares? Aging is beautiful. Aging is natural. Aging is exciting. Angel radiates that messaging in all she does. You may have seen her on The Today Show or QVC. She's been appearing in numerous magazines and podcasts and you can find her brand in many large retailers these days. What makes Angel extra special is that she goes beyond just promoting her brand. We're excited to share this new collaboration between Tangled Silver Magazine and Jill Kirsh Color in hopes to inspire your silver journey while playing in color. It's a quirky thing, color. One day the shades are perfect, then you start going gray and color seems to betray you. Enter Jill Kirsh and her theory on your hair color, rather than your skin tone, being the color code to rock your silvers. II feel a bit like a skunk currently with my very silver/white natural hair about half way down and leftover from dye dark brown finishing things off. What colors would you suggest for the cooler months ahead for me? ~ Theresa R. JILL: If the current state of your hair is basically black & white, then clear, cool shades are the way to go. Think charcoal gray, navy, fuchsia, royal purple, true red & royal blue. I don't want to replace everything in my closet, but what I wore when dyeing my hair various shades of red isn't working now that I'm more salt with a bit of pepper. What colors should I be looking to add to help me with basic black, white and blue jeans? Nelda D. JILL: Love your question, Nelda! The shades that worked with red hair are not even close to the shades to wear if your hair is salt & pepper. As long as your hair has a bit of the pepper mixed in with the salt, then black & white should be fine. And ideally, the shade of blue jeans should be a dark denim verses a light stone washed look. I was told my colors should be based on my skin tone, yet I've noticed you're saying it's our hair color that we should base our colors on? I'm not sure I get why? JILL: Great question. Having been in the color biz for over 25 years, I?ve discovered that ones hair color rules the day. Your hair frames your face - your eyes, your smile - & to highlight your features & look your most beautiful & put together, you should lead with your hair color when choosing shades for fashion & for the eyes, cheeks & lips. It works!! I've got a short pixie cut that is a steel gray shade and need help with what colors

will make me not look dull and washed out? I wear glasses too and have brown eyes, so was thinking a fun frame in a color might help?Trina P.. JILL: Hey Trina P! There are so many shades that are amazing with steel gray hair. If you want to go neutral for your frames, go black or pewter & avoid tortoise shell & gold. And is you want a fun frame, fuchsia, royal purple, true red or cobalt blue would be fab! You should def check out my swatch book for salt & pepper and

Simplicit y Can Be Luxurious I don't think I ever really noted when 'mid-summer' occurs because during the summer months time just seems to get away from me. I don't track time, calories and sometimes miss budget my money. Although this time of year is usually quite laid back and relaxed some days are also neglected; well, really carefree. Maybe you can relate to where the lines of distinction between neglected and carefree can get washed over by waves of daydreams. Fun, family, and sun await the opportunity that the long days are calling to be filled with but consequences of the lack of self-care can require working double time to regain your natural skin care routine back. As we approached mid-summer this year, which was August 7th, the shorter days will remind us that this journey has a beginning, middle, and end; so it is important to #choosejoy. Simplicity at its best is a luxury but I believe it is overlooked. The idea of luxuries being simple sounds contradictory. This season has proved differently. Luxuries also do not have to be something out of reach either intellectually or monetary. In my book I have defined luxury to be contentment and so this is what I have come across as a beauty editor as to what luxury is and how can I enjoy it. Content beauty fills my 5 senses. My friend Sherry talks about how she finds what she needs mentally, spiritually and physically through the aroma of essential oils. I absolutely couldn't agree more. Inhale...Exhale...AHHHH...

BRDA Skincare was introduced to me by my sweet silver sister, Shugi. This line is what I call my peace because of the aromas. The immediate results allow you to not exhaust your product so quickly. You are able to feel relaxed and know it is nourishing your skin. My two favorite pieces are the spray Beauty Water and theAngel Face oil perfume. I had the opportunity to try the

line and was pleased. My face is very sensitive so the beauty and hydrating oil were used all over my body. The prickly pear smell is divine and remedied my son's shoulders overnight as his skin peeled from sun overexposure. He rolled his eyes back faintly and asked, "WhaaAT is that smell? Can I have more?" I am looking forward to finishing out the eye cream and a few other items and will update you on my page but a few pieces are worth mentioning because they are my lifesavers. Let me know if you are familiar with this line and we will chat about it and maybe get to talk to Kylie the creator and founder. City Beauty Official's Plumping Lip gloss over a clean lip liner that doesn't dry out your lips or any of the other colors from City Beauty definitely fall under the category of simple and luxurious. Clear is my favorite because of its versatility. This line has many other face products that provide that 'velvety' finish for those that need a bit more balance this season. Time management, peace of mind, and a piece of anything from the Charcuterie board is luxury on every level. A life well spent can be achieved by the simple idea of an uncomplicated routine. My routine took a detour through a heatwave that shook the east coast. Pulled back and sleek (or not) hair with...' shhhh..don't tell anyone' But hair in regular spf or raspberry oil spray hydrated bare face and conditioned lip was all that would survive the weather without succumbing to looking drained and washed out. now if i was going to hit my ends and scalp and hairline with regular face or body spf then a clarifying product or old school remedy was mandatory. I think if you check out the front cover, a special someone, has a clarifying first step in her trio haircare line. Another simple and wonderful bit f summer hair care. The conversations at 'Swag Chat Live" will resume shortly as I am in the process of many different projects, but I invite you to binge watch any of the chats that are posted. She is advocate for savoring life especially through menopause. Keep an eye out for us to continue our chat without loss of connection media or menopause, LOL. I am thrilled to have a common love for Caire Beauty, founded by Lovely Lorrie ;). Ok, so for my minimalist friends this two-step line will have you dancing through your routine. Caire consists of the dynamite duo of the Theorem Serum and the Triple Molecule Mask. The line is focused on the tlc mature skin requires but any skin care routine will benefit from these beauties. The biggest impression about Caire is the soft 'plump' look my skin has. i don't take the word 'plump' lightly in any degree and I most assuredly attest to plump results!! So while Mom was visiting she was able to be a guinea pig for a few lines and put them to test also. I will let you know in the next issue of TS about Kerotin and Trim Healthy Mama and her results. WOWZA is all I can say. At almost 91 she holds no punches. Maybe learning that earlier in our years helps make for a more authentic life and for a longer duration. Hold no punches. Good topic of conversation...Where do you 'hold no punches'? Summer holds no punches and hasn't held back its heat and beauty and I don't expect anything less from Creation. Looking forward and upward without appreciating what is under my feet on this priceless Globe we live and I will have a few lines to introduce you to. Thinking about going grey? A: The best exercise routine for abdominals will include working both internal and external obliques, transverse abdominals, and the rectus abdominis. Movements that specifically work these muscles include flexion, rotation, and some isometrics that engage contraction from the pelvic floor. When developing an ab routine, I recommend including several TangledSilverMagazine.com

I was at a wedding, and I had chosen t o go t o t his major event wit h a lit t le t emporary brown color on my hair. I was feeling very self-conscious, and a bit ridiculous for coloring my hair for t his event . I was circulating and socializing when I stopped to talk to my mother and stepfather. My stepfather, who was drunk and being loud, told me he thought I looked way younger with my brown hair and I should go back to dyeing it permanently. Matching his tone, I loudly said, ?F#ck off Chuck!!!?The entire gathering turned to look my way, in shock, as I stormed off. This was my only dye dream, and it just happened in 2021, after ditching the dye 6 years prior. Even weirder, I don?t have a stepfather, no clue who that guy was. Dreams are funny that way, though, aren?t they? We add people, facts, and scenarios, to build this strange little subconscious self-dialogue. If you are in any group for silver hair on Facebook or elsewhere, you?ve probably seen the posts on the dye dream. When I did an initial search in one group about this phenomenon, I counted over 100 posts before I lost count to a much longer list of results. Essentially, we all have some version of this dream once we ditch the dye.

DYEING In A DREAM TangledSIlverMagazine.com

I always loved the Memory Pool in Harry Potter, it would be so amazing to spool out a thread of a memory or a dream and see it in front of me like a movie. In my journey down a thousand paths to the one I was meant to be on, one of them was dream interpretation. I loved this field. I find dreams fascinating. They whisper truths to us; they share our commitment to our families, our life, and ourselves with us. Dreams can bring us insight, reveal our fears, and show us the future sometimes. One truly powerful part of dreams is their ability to reveal our truest desire. I?m not diving off the deep-end here; there is psychological data to back this up. Most any habitual practices in our life will revisit us in our dreams after we quit. When I quit smoking, I had this same type of dream. I would dream about smoking at a

party, after dinner, with coffee, and so on. I had this same experience when my adult braces were removed after five long painful years. I would often wake in the night after adjustments because my mouth felt like it was in a vice. Ironically, when the braces were removed, I would awaken from dreams of my teeth falling out, as if the braces had been holding them in. My brain took a little while to process the freedom of my teeth.

It is considered an actual phase of the recovery process when it is about cessation of a previous addiction. It makes sense; our minds are creatures of habit---good or bad. The mind likes routines, and predictabilities. So take a routine or habit away and it goes through an acceptance period. My mom has always told me that, ?sometimes you have to go back to find out why you left.?This little CELEBRATE 2022

nugget of wisdom sums up the dye dream perfectly. It is the way the mind integrates this new reality into your psyche.. I think the most important aspect of these dreams is that it tells you how you really feel. Most people report waking up feeling relieved that the dream is over and happy their hair is still undyed. Some found they were very angry in the dream that their hair was ruined. A rarer set, found they loved the dye and decided to go back to it. Even more interesting is when your spouse dreams about a stylist coloring your hair and then goes off to hunt down said stylist. One woman reported running into old friends and all of them were joyously transitioning to their silver hair? that one is sweet? isn?t it?
