34 The Last Word
n a move that surprised few, Ford recently announced it has downgraded the official fuel economy ratings for its C-Max Hybrid, both in Canada and in the United States. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ratings have been reduced by some 8.5%, from 47/47/47 miles per U.S. gallon (city/highway/combined) to 45/40/43, while Natural Resources Canada figures drop from 4.0/4.1/4.0 L/100 kilometres to 4.2/4.9/4.5. It’s a precipitous blow to Ford’s corporate ego. The company has vociferously touted its fuel economy leadership, a large portion of its recent marketing centered on the C-Max’s fuel economy and its supposed advantage over Toyota’s Prius V. News of the C-Max’s consumptive discrepancies quickly surfaced. Autovision averaged an overall 7.6 L/100 km in multiple tests of the C-Max, and Consumer Reports magazine managed just 37 mpg in its test unit. Automotive News reporter Larry Vellequette, one of the first to break the story of the C-Max’s profligacy, averaged just 35.4 mpg (6.6 L/100 km) in his 28,500 kilometres of C-Max ownership. Indeed, scouring the blogosphere, Vellequette’s consumption average seems about the norm for C-Max owners. So what went wrong? According to Ford and the EPA, the problem is one of testing or, more accurately, the lack thereof. Ratings agencies, unknown to most, do not test all vehicles, instead relying on manufacturer generated data to issue their mandated ratings. And, beyond the issue of whether those testing criteria are realistic (as Autovision has previously recounted, neither the EPA or NRCan’s testing cycles mirror typical driving habits), some substitution is allowed when similar engines are used. Ford says that’s how the C-Max debacle occurred; since it shares identical powertrains, Ford simply used the Fusion Hybrid’s test numbers for the C-Max (note that the Fusion’s ratings remain unchanged). Of course, one has to ask why no one seems to have noticed that one vehicle is a long, low sculpted sedan while the other is a big, square, not nearly so aerodynamic lump and wondered how the latter could match the highway consumption of the former. Quite why Ford decided to base an entire marketing campaign on a vehicle that it didn’t even test is a question that will probably remain unanswered. Going forward, Ford plans to make significant changes to the C-Max to recoup some of the losses. Indeed, according to Consumer Reports, some software and aerodynamic changes have already been made, plus alterations to the transmissions and lower friction oil (otherwise the C-Max’s revised fuel economy rating would have been 41 mpg). The company is also compensating current C-Max owners. In the US, owners will receive $550, lessees $325. Ford of Canada is being more generous; current owners are getting a cheque for $895 (lessees $550). What’s sad about all of this is that it was totally unnecessary. Beyond the obvious incongruity
of the C-Max and Fusion hybrids having the same highway fuel economy rating, it really wasn’t necessary for Ford to “exaggerate” the C-Max’s ratings, especially in its muchballyhooed comparison with the aforementioned Prius V. The Ford has a bigger engine (2.0 litres versus 1.8L), more power (188 horsepower versus 134 hp) and better performance (you’ll have to take my word for it), so attempting to match the Prius’s fuel economy as well was unnecessary — if not outright hubris. Indeed, factoring its larger engine and greater horsepower — not to mention the fact the C-Max is 151 kilograms heavier than the Prius V — and then trying to claim superior fuel economy than the industry leader in hybrid technology is literally to invite skepticism. In Consumer Reports’ testing, it should be noted, the Prius V achieved better mileage than the C-Max. The question is whether the negative effect of these embellishments will linger. I suspect that the biggest issue for Ford will not be the actual mileage discrepancy but that, like the Explorer/Firestone debacle, it did not respond quickly enough to criticism (Consumer Reports first divulged its results last December). I do know that, until the rules and methodology of fuel economy ratings are made more stringent, consumers’ faith in advertised consumption figures will further deteriorate. s

VW Leads the Charge

autumn 2013
Volkswagen is making a huge bet on the electrification of the automobile, announcing at the Frankfurt auto show that as many as 40 of its upcoming vehicles will be either electric or hybrid. CEO Martin Winterkorn said, “The electric car cannot be a compromise on wheels,” backing that up by introducing purely electric versions of its compact Golf hatchback and Up! city car. Only minor styling differences separate the e-Golf from the latest seventhgeneration of the hot hatch, although, underneath the sheet metal, the “e” version gets an electric motor — fed by a 24.2-kWh battery — that puts out 113 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque. Volkswagen claims a range of up to 190 kilometres between charges. Meanwhile, the five-passenger e-Up! comes with an 81-hp and 155-lb-ft e-motor and an 18.7-kWh battery. VW is even boasting a panel van cargo conversion for urban commercial use.
A Brave New (Jaguar) World Parsimonious Peugeot Depending on what figure is believed, Peugeot’s 208 Hybrid FE Concept either gets 111 miles per U.S. gallon or 118. The car the French automaker unveiled at the recent Frankfurt auto show proudly displayed its 49 grams/kilometre of CO2 emissions (that would be the 111 mpg figure) on its doors, but, later in the show, Peugeot put out a press release saying the true figure was 46 gm/km (118 mpg). That’s an incredible 1.9 L/100 km, a figure made all the more amazing by the fact that — powered by a minuscule 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine and an electric motor — the 208 concept can scoot to 100 kilometres an hour in a totally respectable eight seconds.
WN-Autumn2013.indd 2
Though details are sparse, the Frankfurt auto show also highlighted Jaguar’s long-rumoured foray into the crossover world, with the British automaker’s C-X17 wowing the crowd. Although it’s officially designated a concept, there’s little in the C-X17’s design — according to chief designer Ian Callum — that can’t be reproduced on a production line. And, like all new Jaguars, the C-X17’s chassis is built entirely of aluminum with a double-wishbone suspension up front and a multi-link setup at the rear. At about 4,700 millimetres in length, the C-X17 is significantly larger than the Range Rover Evoque, but smaller than the company’s LR4. If the C-X17 ever comes to production, it might well be powered by the company’s turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder, with the new 3.0L supercharged V6 an option.
13-09-29 7:28 PM
… And Even More Parsimony Mercedes-Benz’s latest hybrid may be the best. The S 500 Plug-in Hybrid, also shown at the Frankfurt auto show, uses a 328-horsepower 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 and an 80-kilowatt electric motor to scoot to 100 kilometres an hour in just 5.5 seconds, while still offering (but not while accelerating that hard!) 3.0 L/100 km fuel consumption in the European cycle. And, in its “electric only” mode, it can travel 30 km on battery juice alone.

not be officially destined for North America, but we can always pray that Land Rover Canada sees the light. Powered by a 3.0L V6 turbodiesel and a 47-hp electric motor, Land Rover says the combination is good for 355 hp and a 6.4 L/100 km fuel economy rating.
… And yet another one we may miss. Alpina showed off its BMW 3 Series-based D3 Bi-turbo, claiming its 345 hp is good for a 4.6-second zero-to-100-km/h acceleration time combined with 5.3 L/100 km diesel-fue!ed economy!
… Average fuel economy is increasing, says the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute. Thanks to Americans buying smaller cars as well as more efficient powertrains, the August 2013 average of 24.9 miles per U.S. gallon (9.5 L/100 km) is up significantly from the 20.8 mpg the Institute measured for the 2008 model year.

While most of Toyota’s hybrid lineup is kind of — let’s shout it out — boring, the company’s new Yaris Hybrid-R may just be the injection the environmentally conscious segment needs. The three-door pocket rocket incorporates technology from Toyota’s TS030 Hybrid race car, with a 300-horsepower, turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine under its hood paired with — count ‘em — not one but two 60-hp electric motors, one at each rear wheel. Toyota claims a completely ridiculous system output of 420 hp. There’s more. The Yaris Hybrid-R ditches the traditional heavy battery pack for a lightweight super-capacitor, which can hold more energy and has a much faster power charge/discharge speed than traditional batteries. The HybridR’s sportiness is emphasized by its Recaro seats, and 18-inch TRD wheels wrapped in proper Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires. Come on, Toyota. Be brave! Put a manufacturer’s sticker tag on it and put it in your dealerships.

Alfa Romeo Returns! By DaviD Booth in Balocco, italy

igeonholing Alfa Romeo’s new 4C can be a little difficult. It purports to be a supercar, yet sports just four cylinders. It’s the car to which Alfa has hinged its return to former glory, and yet no more than 3,500 will be made during any given year. It is a “driving machine without compromise,” says the press release, yet much of its interior is sourced from Chrysler and Fiat. Nonetheless, Alfa sees inspiration for the 4C in its classic 1967 33 Stradale, one of the most beautiful — and underappreciated — supercars of its era, though this is misleading in one regard since the Stradale was the most expensive supercar of its day — about 20% more expensive than the Lamborghini Miura SV. Meanwhile, Harald Wester, Alfa’s CEO, promises the 4C will cost only US$54,000 when it reaches the United States. (Canadian pricing has yet to be determined.) And, yet, from a purely technical viewpoint, the Alfa most closely resembles McLaren’s high-tech — and very expensive — MP4-12C, its chassis comprising a carbon-fibre centre tub to which aluminum front and rear subframes are attached. The 4C weighs but 895 kilograms, much lighter than a Mazda Miata and more than a half-ton lighter than the aforementioned McLaren. That lightness permeates everything about the 4C. For instance, the Alfa’s steering is purely mechanical: There’s no hydraulic or electrical boost at all to assist the driver. Said steering is also very quick, and provides an incredible level of feedback to the driver. It also means the steering wheel follows

every rut, bump and crevice in the road, the 4C the very antithesis of Camry-like calm on the superslab. The little Alfa is stable, but the wheel is constantly jiggling in your hands as every road imperfection is fed back through the steering rack. And, as should be expected, slow-speed U-turns can be a workout. However, one lap around the automaker’s Balocco Proving Grounds’ track is enough to persuade one that Alfa’s compromise is worth the forearm workout. Maximum grip is said to be 1.1g and, despite the relatively skinny tires — P235/35R19 Pirelli P Zeros at the rear and P205/40R18s up front — all that adhesion is easily exploited. I kept jamming the 4C into corners ever harder, but ran out of bottle before the sports car ran out of traction. Its consummate ease of handling is certainly not because the Alfa is slow. Despite a seemingly pedestrian 1.75-litre four-banger — hey, it’s turbocharged — and family sedan-like 240 horsepower, the 4C is plenty quick, the combination of 3.85 kg/hp weight-topower ratio and slick-shifting double-clutch transmission good for an acceleration time of 4.5 seconds to 100 kilometres an hour. It all adds up to, says Wester, to an eight-minute four-second lap around the world-famous Nurburgring, fast by any measure and especially impressive when you consider that 8:04 is the same time boasted by the Audi’s R8-V8. Those still contending that supercars need more than four pistons really need to take a spin in the new Alfa. That said, the 4C has a few of the limitations endemic to supercars regardless of size. For instance, the cabin is a little cramped. 4Cs headed for Canada will benefit from a few extra air bags, air conditioning and an adjustable passenger seat, all options on the European version — sports car aficionados from the Continent obviously a little more singularly focused. But, then, supercars, especially those from Italy, are never about practicality. And there is much about the new Alfa that is super. s

et’s be absolutely frank here — Hyundai’s revamped Equus is a throwback. Oh, it’s positively chockablock with highfalutin’ high technology, its powertrain is incredibly sophisticated and the interior is rich in both decor and execution. But it’s an old soul, homage to what a top-of-the-line luxury sedan used to be (and, obviously, what Hyundai hopes to be again). For instance, the ride coddles to the point that Molly, whoever she might have been, would have been in rapture. The Equus’s adjustable suspension does have a Sport setting, but, compared with the cars that Hyundai dares to cite as targets for the luxury car — Mercedes-Benz’s S-Class, BMW’s 7 Series, et al. — even this firmer setting is not as earnest as the competitors’ softest suspension setting. Normal bumps pass under the Equus’s wheels barely noticed; larger potholes offer precious little more perturbation. That’s not to say that the Equus’s suspension, or, indeed, its entire chassis is unsophisticated. While one could never label it sporty, neither could one honestly condemn it as floaty. Besides the adjustable damping, the suspenders are also controlled for height, the Sport offering a lower ride than Normal and Snow. And the chassis itself feels enormously rigid, with the bank vault feeling of security so often attributed to Mercedes-Benz. No, just because the Equus is not able to bend a corner as a 750i might doesn’t mean it’s lesser, only that Hyundai’s focus is different from that of BMW’s. Ditto the powertrain, which, although it is powerful and quick (429 horsepower and less than six seconds to 100 km/h) is dominated by a sensation of buttery smoothness. In fact, Hyundai’s 5.0-litre “Tau” V8 feels as creamy smooth as a Jaguar V8, equally sophisticated and just as composed. Most of the updates to the 2014 Hyundai Equus, however, are in

the cabin. Here, the previous model took its retro motif a chrome accent too far, the cabin looking dated stylistically. On the other hand, the new version may appear a little more subdued, but it doesn’t look old. And the Equus hits all the requisite luxury sedan high-tech high points — the gauge set is entirely Thin Film Transistor (TFT) technology, there’s a 9.2-inch LCD screen for the infotainment system and a colourful head-up display for speed, directions and warnings. My favourite part is the steering wheelmounted, (first-generation) iPod-like thumbwheel to cycle through some of the dashboard’s functions; it really is a doddle to use. There’s also all manner of safety electronics on board including a lane departure warning system, backup camera, a rear cross-traffic alert system and blindspot detection. More importantly, the cabin’s materials are up to snuff. Oh, the leather isn’t quite as good as an Audi A8’s and the wood not quite as glossy as in a Jaguar XJ, but nobody is going to complain that Hyundai cheaped out on the decor. Leather, wood and metal are all up to class standards. And by class, I mean the uber-luxury segment where the competitors all cost tens of thousands of dollars more. Despite its segment-matching quality and attractive price tag, the Equus is likely to remain a tough sell. Beyond its lack of pedigree and the lack of all-wheel drivetrain (only rearwheel drive is available), the Equus looks to occupy the space the rest of the luxury segment has just left. But should this march toward evermore performance prove to be mere trend rather than true evolution, Hyundai may be ideally situated to reap the rewards of producing a traditional luxury sedan. And if you’re searching for a large, hedonistically luxurious four-door sedan that stresses comfort — what used to be called a banker’s car — you could do far worse than parking an Equus in your driveway. s

Sometimes leasing makes sense by nadine filion
P
eople who wish to own their cars shouldn’t lease; they should just buy from the outset.” Heard that one before? Admittedly, it makes sense, but not in every case. A car lease offer of “only $199 a month” can be enticing, especially when the monthly cost of purchasing the vehicle works out to nearly double that. However, assuming leasing is inexpensive is often a huge mistake. Why? Because there’s much more than just the monthly payment to consider. It’s important to look at the big picture and there’s no better or more important place to start than with interest rates. Everyone knows the smaller the interest rate the better. But have you noticed that low monthly lease payments often involve higher rates than purchase rates? Take the $23,700 Toyota Camry: In September, four-year purchase financing was 0.9% versus a 2.9% lease rate. Of course, the lease still costs less, simply because you’re only financing a portion of the vehicle’s sticker price over that pre-defined period. Despite the higher interest rates, for instance, the mid-sized Toyota would lease for $366/month for 48 months (for a total of $17,568 with taxes) versus $610/month (or a
FT-BuyLease.indd 33
total of $29,280, again with taxes) to finance it. Nevertheless, that low payment doesn’t mean low cost. “This is one of the most serious misconceptions,” says Éric Brassard, financial planner with Brassard, Goulet, Yargeau (Québec) and author of the Frenchlanguage book Finance au Volant. Although leasing makes vehicles more “accessible,” it does not reduce their real cost. And, at the end of the lease, the residual cost ($13,658 with taxes) will have to be added for a total cost of $31,226, about $1,946 more than if you had financed your Camry. What hurts most No matter how the numbers are crunched, one fact remains: Depreciation is what hits you where it hurts most — more than maintenance costs, much more than fuel costs and even more than the cost of repairs. Depreciation is costly, says Dennis DesRosiers, an authority on Canadian automobile statistics because, depending on the model, a vehicle loses half of its value after three to five years. Naturally, one doesn't get an invoice that indicates the cost of depreciation amount in big, bold numbers. So, instead, let’s analyze the example of a consumer who hung on to his Honda Civic (and paid for maintenance
But there are times to lease But, leasing is not always the most expensive option. In some cases, leasing makes as much sense — if not more — than buying: 1) When the interest rate is more… interesting Interest rates vary widely, depending not only on buying or leasing terms and conditions but also the make and even the various trim levels. And, sometimes, the lease rate is the same if not better than the purchase rate. This is when things get interesting: “When lease and purchase rates are similar, leasing and purchasing become two equivalent options,” explains Brassard. “In fact, leasing is just another way of borrowing, the difference being that you have a balance at maturity.” Maximizing the cost savings of leasing requires discipline, however. The money that is saved as a result of lower lease payments should go to an RRSP — which will reduce your income tax — or put in a tax-free savings account (TFSA), so you can pay the residual at the end of your lease. However, caution should be exercised when confronted with deals offering low monthly payments and gimmicks such as “weekly payments.” Leasing leads to the temptation of a bigger, better-equipped, more luxurious — and, ultimately, more expensive — car. A BMW “at only $125/week” sounds affordable, but keep in mind that “the more upscale the vehicle, the more expensive its maintenance,” according to Jesse Caron, a research officer with CAA Québec.
autumn 2013

and repairs) for 12 years versus a consumer who, over the same period, leased three new Civics. The money saved by the consumer who hung on to his Civic for more than a decade is substantial (see Table 1). Indeed, at more than $16,000, it almost amounts to the cost of the car itself!
2) When your budget is extremely tight Leasing can well serve a very limited budget, when a few dollars can make a big difference. The Nissan Versa, one of the least expensive cars on the market, has a higher lease than purchase rate. On the other hand, perhaps
13-09-29 7:34 PM
the $146 monthly lease payment is the most a consumer on a tight budget can afford, while the extra $67 per month needed to buy the car is simply too much. Again, discipline is required to maximize the benefit. “The money saved should go to paying off debt with higher interest rates, [such as] a credit card,” says Caron. And be careful of the residual value. Caron points out: “The lower the residual value, the higher the monthly payments will be, and the lessee will end up paying too big of a share for the use of the vehicle.” (The Canadian Black Book website provides estimated resale values for both new and used vehicles.) 3) When you want to change cars often For those who like changing cars as often as they change shirts, leasing has an advantage over buying — it establishes, ahead of time, the value of your vehicle at the end of its lease. Self-employed workers also have to take tax matters into account. “Simulations including tax parameters need to be carried out so as to be able to make a sound decision as to what
constitutes the best scenario,” explains Dany Provost, financial and tax planning director, SFL/DFSIN. Nevertheless, those who lease (or buy) repeatedly set in motion the vicious circle of neverending car debt. As Woody Allen said, “Eternity is really long, especially towards the end.” Avoid financing over seven or eight years One last tip when it comes to buying versus leasing: Opt for the shortest term you can afford, as less interest will accumulate over a shorter period. Have you been offered financing over seven or eight years? Generally speaking, you’ll lose in the end. True, cars are increasingly reliable and, therefore, lend themselves to a term of 84 or even 96 months. And let’s be clear: If Honda offered the Civic at 0% over eight years, it would be foolish not to take advantage of that offer. “If we’re really talking about a term at 0%,” says Brassard, “you might as well make it a life-long term if you can!” But read the fine print and be sure the low rate offered is real. For example, in early Sep-
tember, Honda Canada offered a purchase rate of 1.99% over five years for its $19,445 Civic XL. However, if you were to pay cash, a $1,500 rebate was being offered. As a result of that rebate, when comparing the two options, that advertised rate of 1.99% was in reality 5.3%. Indeed, if you had access to a personal line of credit with an interest rate of less than 5.3%, you would have been better off buying the car for cash and taking Honda’s rebate. In general, extra-long-term financing is not recommended, especially when you factor out-of-warranty repair work. A Ford Escape financed over seven years at 4.5% may indeed cost $100 or so less per month than when the same amount is financed over a five-year period at 2.5%. Ultimately, hovever, the difference amounts to an extra $3,000 of interest, which means you’re paying about 10% of the vehicle’s value in extra interest. And seven years means you’ll be paying for a vehicle with a warranty that has long expired. Having to add the cost of repairs to your monthly seemingly never-ending payments is not so appealing. As Mr. Allen says, eternity really is a long time. s

2014 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Limited By DaviD Booth in Denver, Colo.

illed under the codename Project Rushmore — the changes are monumental, geddit? — the changes to Harley-Davidson’s 2014 Electra Glide Ultra Limited are nothing short of revolutionary. The bike may look the same — Harley Big Twin customers are, after all, a hoary lot not given to acceptance of radical styling alterations — but, underneath the familiar skin, is a motorcycle so completely new that its most profound change — a liquid-cooled engine — had to be disguised. Yes, that’s right: liquid-cooled and Harley-Davidson Big Twin … in the same sentence. Having resisted water-cooling over its 110-year existence, Harley has finally succumbed to modern noise and emissions regulations and updated its top-of-the-line 45-degree V-twin with radiators and cooling fans (Road Kings, Street Glides and Electra Glide Ultra Classics remain air-cooled). But, like BMW, which faced the same issue of water-cooling an iconic air-cooled engine without altering the motor’s basic “look,” the new Big Twin cools its cylinder head via radiators but leaves the main cylinders air-cooled so they can retain their iconic fins. Indeed, as evidenced by the Ultra Limited version of the Electra Glide, it’s not immediately obvious the new Twin-Cooled (both air and water) engine is anything other
RT-Harley.indd 30
than a traditional air-cooled Big Twin. Indeed, the cylinders retain all of the Big Twin’s heat dispensing fins, and even the cylinder heads remain visually unchanged except for two hoses emanating from their tops (visible only with the engine out of the frame and normally concealed by the gas tank). Even the radiators are so well hidden in the lower fairings typical of fully dressed Harleys that one must get down on bended knee to inspect whether they really are in there. That means implementation of the Twin-Cooled High Output Big Twin will be limited to the Touring models until Harley figures out an even more clever way to disguise radiators for its bare-bones Dyna and Softail models. Many have said this change is long overdue, and Harley claims a 10.7% power advantage (thanks to a higher 10.1:1 compression ratio, new camshaft and more aggressive ignition tuning) for the liquid-cooled version of the Big Twin. Just as important, however, is that the new Twin-Cooled engines put out consistent levels of power no matter how hot they get. The power output of the air-cooled versions tend to drop off as they get hot — the ignition system retarding timing to prevent the detonation that occurs when an air-cooled engine can’t shed heat fast enough. From that point of view, the Twin-Cooled engine is a success, especially
since — as previously mentioned — Harley took great pains to conceal its new cooling system; you really can’t tell the engine is anything but traditional. There’s more to these “Rushmore” upgrades than a little radiator fluid, though, and the other changes are much more readily apparent, none more so than the new Boom! Box infotainment systems. Available in two grades, the topline 6.5 GT (so named for its 6.5-inch LCD screen) system on the Limited is truly amazing and, surprise, surprise, is the best such high-tech integration in the motorcycle industry. The 6.5 is touchscreen as well as voice-commanded (the 4.3 model, available on lesser models, is not), features satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity to your mobile phone and has a high-tech GPS system. More important than the mere range of technologies is the integration of all this high-tech into a motorcycle format. The new Harley infotainment system is extremely functional and quite intuitive; I wish many automobile systems were as good. Other notable changes include new, far stouter, 49-millimetre front forks (up from 43 mm) that not only provide superior chassis stiffness but also improved damping. Together with the chassis, which was redesigned a few years ago, these changes leave just the rear suspension needing a little recalibration — sharp-edged bumps that the front fork glided over flummoxed the rear shock. As it stands, the Ultra Limited handles a whole bunch better than a 397-kilogram touring bike has any right to. Perhaps the least feted improvement, however, are the aerodynamic enhancements to the Glide’s front fairing. Though outwardly little changed, wind buffetting is dramatically reduced primarily due to a new vent that bleeds air to the cockpit. Unlike other such vent systems that promise much more streamlined aerodynamics but fail to deliver, there is a distinct improvement in comfort when the vent is opened. These fixes all add up to the most improved Harley-Davidson I have ever tested. The 2014 Electra Glide Ultra Limited ($29,529) is — finally, one might add — a legitimate, noexcuses-need-be-made competitor to the best from Honda and BMW. s

Cruising on a budget 2014 Honda CTX700 By DaviD Booth in La MaLBaie, Que.
Autovision 28
autumn 2013
I
t would appear I am a poor judge of facial expressions. To whit: In trying to gauge the appeal of the CTX700, Honda’s new, budget-minded pseudo-cruiser, I looked for reactions from passersby for some clue as to whether Honda’s latest ersatz cruiser was hideous or genius. And the good people of La Malbaie — a scenic little burg on the north shore of Quebec’s St. Lawrence River — responded. An inordinate number of the locals slowed down/stopped/speeded up to catch a glimpse of the mid-sized Honda. But, either I have no ability to decipher facial expressions, or La Malbaie’s residents have been schooled by poker legend Amarillo Slim in the art of maintaining an expressionless face when appraising other people’s wheels. For the life of me, I could not decide whether they were appraising the new Honda with the envy reserved for a stylish new set of wheels or the contempt reserved for when you realize the motorcycle you were speeding up to look at is a scooter. So, carefully gaze upon the CTX700 illustrated here for I can’t say whether Honda’s latest brainchild is stylish or passé, sexy or frumpy, happy or sad. You’re on your own. I literally don’t have a clue whether you’ll like it or not. But, I can tell you the new CTX rides — with a few caveats — pretty darn well. That’s understandable, since underneath all the plastic fashioned to look like Honda’s own F6B cruiser lies the heart of Honda’s new NC700. Indeed, the CTX uses essentially the same chassis as the NC save a lower rear subframe. That’s because if one is going to present the motorcycle as a cruiser, it needs a really low seat. And while the CTX700 can’t match the lowest perch in Honda’s lineup (an attribute also appreciated by newer riders and those of short stature), the CTX’s 720-millimetre seat height is still comfortably close to terra firma. Nonetheless, the rest of the bike
RT-Honda.indd 30
feels remarkably familiar to the NC700. The same six-speed gearbox makes its way to the rear wheel via a chain, the same brakes — with ABS — provide stellar performance, and the entire shooting match is motivated by Honda’s new 670-cc parallel twin. Like the NC700, the radically tilted-forward engine has more torque than horsepower and, unlike virtually every mainstream motorcycle save a Harley-Davidson Big Twin, it’s not very happy revving at more than 6,400 rpm. Honda limits the undersquare (the bore and stroke measure 73 x 80 millimetres) engine’s maximum revs for fuel economy reasons, claiming that keeping the engine speed down is a surefire road to internal-combustion parsimony. And, yes, the CTX700 I rode sipped 4.3 litres for every 100 kilometres, especially impressive considering my merciless thrashing of the bike. Artificially restricting revs also makes more sense in the cruiser-like CTX (many testers riding the more mainstream NC700 were upset by the engine’s propensity to hit the rev limiter so quickly). Indeed, the CTX is the one motorcycle Honda Canada should offer with its automatic-shifting DCT transmission. It would certainly cater to the
CTX’s intended audience of newbie/older riders and also match up well with the CTX’s torque-laden twin. Two models are offered: the barebones N ($8,499), and the partially faired T ($8,999) that I spent most of my time riding. I much preferred the T, primarily because it was equipped with Honda’s optional taller windshield (the standard item is a truncated affair à la Honda F6B or Harley Road Glide) and colour-matched saddlebags. So endowed, seat comfort was excellent, wind protection passable and there was enough cargo capacity for a weekend jaunt. So much did I prefer this combination that I believe Honda Canada should offer it as a third model along with the barebones N and the semi-clad T. (It might also reduce the $1,184.26 Honda Canada wants for the bags, windshield and attachment hardware.) Hitting the open road without that extra wind protection doesn’t make sense with the CTX’s cruiser-like sit-up-and-beg riding position. The addition of the windscreen and luggage transform the CTX into a competent, lightweight, low-cost tourer. Other than the cruiser-mandated forward-mounted footpegs, I had no gripes with the new CTX. The bike is quite comfortable in every way save the aforementioned rider’s footpegs. It fairly sips fuel, it’s easy to ride and it seems to turn heads. As I alluded to previously, I am unsure as to the reason why it turns those heads, but Honda is betting that all those poker-faced Quebecois were smiling inside. s

Writer-Less Car Magazines By Jeremy Cato
Autovision 30
autumn 2013
I
think this will be my last column here. If cars are going driverless, shouldn’t car magazines go writer-less? Hope not. I still need the work. That said, cars most definitely are going driverless. I just spent an hour in a Nissan Leaf that drives itself. I just sat there and watched it steer around a makeshift driving route on the tarmac of an out-of-use Marine air base near Los Angeles. Needless to say, I felt as useless as El Toro Marine Air Base is today (insert your own jokes here, please). Nonetheless, Nissan Motor is wild about autonomous drive vehicles. The plan is to have a small selection of them available to customers no later than 2020. By tying together laser scanners and Around View Monitor cameras with artificial intelligence and various actuators about the car (i.e., brakes, throttle), the coming Nissans will drive themselves. “Nissan Motor Company’s willingness to question conventional thinking and to drive progress is what sets us apart,” says Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn. If you’re a sci-fi geek such as me, you’ll remember that this the sort of “unconventional thinking” led to the almost complete annihilation of the Seven Colonies in the TV cult classic Battlestar Galactica. The Cylons — thinking, feeling, autonomous robots — nuked mankind, leaving less than 50,000 humans alive out of billions. This is where autonomous driving could lead us. Yet no one at any car company or supplier is worried about Cylons. The Ghosns of the world can’t wait to take the steering wheel out of your hands. They are concerned about regulators, however. Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche recently said he agrees with others like him who believe regulators have a big job figuring out self-driving technology. Can the Cylons be trusted to drive you about? Sure they can.

And they will, once the car companies prove the technology is reliable. They will. A bigger challenge will be marketing selfdriving cars. At the world premiere of the Mercedes S-Class this year, Zetsche staked out the broad strokes of the marketing plan. The new S-Class, he said, “marks the start of the era of partially autonomous driving.”
This new S has six “eyes” (cameras) and six “ears” (radar sensors) and can drive itself up to 60 kilometres an hour, Zetsche told Automotive News. And thus, the spin on the autonomous S-Class is that it’s now able to take over many of the most tedious parts of your daily commute. Ah, but the fun stuff: “We will never automate the cool part of driving … the uncool part, though, we can do without,” he told the industry publication. Of course, I’d wager that quite a bit of your daily commute is deadly dull. Anyone who’s tried navigating Toronto’s 401 or the
TransCanada out of Vancouver most likely would pay for the option of letting a Cylon do the wheeling. There is most assuredly a market for what the experts call “automated driving functions.” Yes, but you’re probably worried about how Canada’s weather will interfere with self-driving cars. Don’t. The Nissan people told me that they will overcome rain, snow, sleet, hail and anything else thrown at their self-driving Leaf. Cloud computing will help, as will advanced sensors, and what’s being called “car-to-car” infrastructure. Heck, in Battlestar Galactica, the Cylons were able to steer spaceships through a mushroom cloud and nuclear fallout. What’s a little snow compared with that? In fact, as I rummaged around researching this column, I came to the conclusion that viable driverless technology is closer than around the corner. Heck, the future is now. We can already make cars drive themselves, as Google has been proving in the desert out in the western United States. As usual, though, people are getting in the way. A European Union study in 2011, as reported by Automotive News, pointed this out quite nicely. The question isn’t: Can we make a car drive itself? No, the question is: How does an autonomous car affect the driver? And how will designers create an interface that does not overload the driver with even more information than is available to today’s over-burdened driver? How will car companies and their dealers train drivers to operate autonomous driving systems? I mean, Ford has caught all kinds of hell for difficulties consumers have encountered operating its Sync and MyFord Touch/ MyLincoln Touch infotainment systems. No one dies if MyLincoln Touch can’t understand that you’re asking it to find the nearest ice cream parlour and program it into the navigation system. But what if you tell your Cylonic car to do something wrong or dangerous? It could be fatal. And can automated vehicles play nicely with other “road users” being piloted by flesh-and-blood drivers? What do real drivers need to know about Cylonic cars and can they be trusted — the Cylons, I mean? Of course, if you know the TV series, you know they can’t be trusted. If so, perhaps the age of driverless cars is yet a little ways off. So, I’m planning for another column in this car magazine. The writer-less age of journalism is not quite here. Yet. s
