WELCOME BACK Finally, the Canadian Mechanical and Plumbing Exposition (CMPX) returns to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre from Wednesday, March 23 through Friday, March 25. It’s been four years since the in-person hands-on trade show and conference was last held, and the anticipation of the doors opening once again is almost over. The national event, jointly produced by the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) and the Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating (CIPH), brings together people from across the plumbing and HVAC/R industries for a loaded three-day gathering to get exposed to new technologies from hundreds of exhibitors while also re-connecting with colleagues and identifying the latest trends. This year’s educational program, the CMPX 2022 Learning Forum, features presentations from experts along with panel discussions. SPEAKER PROFILES Benj Cohen is the founder and CEO of Proton.ai, an AI-powered sales platform purpose-built for distributors. While studying applied math and data science at Harvard, Cohen realized he could use what he was learning in school to help increase sales for his family dental business. Upon seeing its success, he founded Proton.ai in order to bring this technology to the rest of the distribution space. Proton.ai recently raised $20M in Series A funding. John Vander Doelen is director policy, research and standards with Skilled Trades Ontario. He previously served in a similar capacity with the Ontario College of Trades where he was responsible for establishing the training and curriculum standards, developing policy and research to support trades-related decision making and most recently participated in the transition of programs to Skilled Trades Ontario. Prior to joining the Ontario College of Trades, he had a 30-plus year career with the Ontario Ministry of Labour in policy and operational roles related to occupational health and safety. Robert Edwards is a business advisor, private sector at IESO. Edwards has been at the IESO for over 12 years and in his current role he maintains relationships with many of the largest commercial businesses in Ontario. Working at the corporate level with a provincial focus, he

provides information, strategies and support to help these organizations participate in Save-on-Energy incentive programs as well as related energy management programs offered by the IESO. George Hantzis is the supervisor, energy conservation commercial market at Enbridge Gas. Hantzis currently leads Enbridge’s large commercial team of energy solutions advisors in helping customers find opportunities to reduce their natural gas consumption through the adoption of efficiency measures that maximize ROI, reduce energy costs and boost their bottom line. Before taking on this role, he worked as an industrial energy solutions consultant where he applied his technical knowledge and practical skills towards developing custom energy efficiency solutions. Andrei Hari has worked a combined 20 years with Armstrong Fluid Technology. Hari currently holds the title of Canadian business development manager, concentrating on educating the industry on a systems approach to chilled water, geothermal, heat pump and boiler plant optimization with a focus on an understanding of demand-based controls, digital twins and the

application of AI, along with the importance of flow control. Andrei is a graduate of Ryerson University with a mechanical engineering degree. Philip Johnston is the low GWP program leader at Daikin Applied. Johnston joined McQuay International (now Daikin Applied Americas) in June 2001. He held a series of development, new product introduction, and product management roles in the air side business before becoming the senior director of product planning in 2010. In 2012, Johnston became the product general manager for the applied terminal business (water/ground source heat pumps, fan coils and unit ventilators). Mike Miller is vice president of sales with Taco Comfort Solutions in Canada. Born and raised in Germany where he became a certified heating cooling and air conditioning mechanic, Miller immigrated to Canada in 1996 and worked as a heating contractor in B.C. before joining a privately-owned plumbing and heating wholesaler in Red Deer, Alberta. He then joined a leading controls manufacturer in 2000 and has remained on the manufacturer side of the industry ever since, joining Taco Comfort Solutions in 2013. Miller plays an active role in several industry associations, and he is a past chair of the Canadian Hydronics Council (CHC).

Andre Patineau is the director of solutions strategy – cold chain at Emerson. Patineau is responsible for supporting sustainable system-related innovation and leveraging Emerson’s global cold chain to drive adoption of integrated solutions in North America. He most recently led marketing efforts pertaining to Emerson’s food retail and chiller markets. Andre has more than 35 years of industry experience in sales, marketing, training, and business development.

Scott Reed is vice president of sales and marketing for Anesi Gas Heat Pumps (Stone Mountain Technologies). The company has been developing gas heat pumps for the past decade and will enter production in 2023. The technology is supported by multiple Canadian gas utilities.

Jeremy Sager is a senior HVAC and renewables research engineer with CanmetENERGY, a research and development arm of Natural Resources Canada. Sager has 20 years of experience in assessing the performance of innovative heating, ventilation, and air conditioning and renewable energy systems. He has undertaken several technology assessment projects of innovative HVAC and renewable energy systems at the Canadian Centre for Housing Technology and in the lab including assessments of zoned systems, combination space and water heating systems, cold climate air source heat pumps, and solar assisted air source heat pumps, among others.

Bonnie Rose, P.Eng., was appointed president/CEO of the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) in 2018. Overseeing all aspects of TSSA’s business operations, Rose provides leadership on the overall direction and strategic priorities of the organization. She is focused on strengthening TSSA’s role as a well-respected leader in the safety industry and upholding safety excellence. She holds a

Steve Royce is the commercial projects coordinator at Viessmann. For more than a decade, Royce has been focused on reducing energy consumption and looking for unique opportunities where solar thermal and biomass technologies can be deployed on residential, commercial, and institutional projects across Canada.

Jeffrey Siegel is the Bahen/ Tanenbaum Chair in Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto Siegel holds joint appointments at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and the

Department of Physical & Environmental Sciences. He has an M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley as well as a B.Sc. from Swarthmore College. His research interests include healthy and sustainable buildings, filtration, and air cleaning, ventilation and indoor air quality in residential and commercial buildings, control of indoor particulate matter, and the impact of building systems on indoor microbiology and chemistry. Faith Winter is the market development specialist at Endura. Winter is a well-travelled, trusted advisor who consults with clients in the design community looking for quality information on commercial grease management. However, her educational endeavor does not end with engineers, specifiers, and architects, but extends out to owners, developers, city officials and contractors across North America. Avi Yurman is the head of product at Reed Water. Originally from Toronto, Yurman holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business, and before co-founding Reed Water, he owned and operated an audio-visual automation company

< UPFRONT OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND MAYBE IT'S THE LONGER DAYS AND WARMER WEATHER AS SPRING BEGINS TO APPEAR AROUND THE CORNER, or maybe it’s the easing of the restrictions on our lives as the pandemic is waning and life is slowly returning to normal; or maybe it’s the optimism and general collective comraderie I experienced in early February at the AHR Expo in Las Vegas, where the North American HVAC/R industry gathered for the first time in two years; but whatever it is, there is an energy in the air and it really feels like we are launching into an era of new opportunity. There are many forces converging that are bringing change to the HVAC/R and plumbing industries including: refrigerant phase downs, decarbonization, electrification, new building codes, and all of this on top of continuing supply chain issues, inflation and an increasingly aging labour force without an influx of new talent to fill the gaps. It may seem like the challenges being faced far outweigh the opportunities, but that’s not the impression I get when I listen to the experts in this industry. For example, in this issue hydronics industry legend John Siegenthaler outlines clearly why he believes the stars are aligning for a great resurgence in the adoption of hydronics: “The global movement away from fossil fuel and toward electrification could very well be one of the biggest opportunities ever presented to the North American hydronics industry,” he states, noting that those who act on this movement will reap the rewards. It was Einstein who said, “in the midst of every crisis, lies great opportunity.” Although the challenges facing the industry are not at the crisis level— although the lack of sufficient labour could be approaching emergency status— there are opportunities to be found. The Canadian Mechanical and Plumbing Exposition (CMPX) returns this month, March 23-25 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, and as always this show will provide plenty of solutions and new ideas for everyone who attends. The show will be overflowing with the latest in new technology and ideas designed to make your businesses better and improve your customers' homes, buildings and indoor environments. As a preview to CMPX, we reached out to exhibitors to find out what products and new solutions they will be featuring, and that product showcase begins on page 78. And this year's CMPX also features a strong educational component, the Learning Forum, another great opportunity to expand your knowledge and encourage growth among the next generation. While at the AHR Expo, I attended a very interesting “State of the Industry” panel discussion (more details on page 22), and one of the strongest messages coming out of that session was the importance of contractors taking advantage of the learning opportunities available to them and their staff. Showing the new generation of employees that you are willing to invest in their growth is key to new employee attraction and employee retention. And in this issue, along with our regular informative articles, we have also provided additional space for our advertisers to “Show & Tell” the solutions they have to elevate your projects and move your companies to the next level. FEDS LAUNCH CAMPAIGN TO PROMOTE SKILLED TRADES The Government of Canada has launched an advertising campaign to promote the skilled trades as a strong first-choice career path for youth and young adults. Recent projections estimate about 700,000 skilled trades workers are expected to retire between 2019 and 2028, creating an ever-growing need to recruit and train thousands more. Also launched as part of this campaign is canada.ca/skilled-trades, a website that offers a one-stop source for information about the skilled trades. The site provides lists of skilled trade professions, providing information about more than 300 skilled trades as

well as information about the Red Seal trade designation. The site also zeroes in on in-demand trades in each region, listing plumbing among the most in-demand in Alberta and Quebec, and refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics in demand in Saskatchewan. The site also links to available financial support offered by the Government of Canada, including funding available to support Red Seal trade training programs, and links to information for employers to support the apprentices they hire and train. The campaign will reach youth and young adults through social media platforms, websites, campus billboards, public transit and national broadcasts. To further support more Canadians to join the skilled trades, the Government of Canada is investing nearly $1 billion annually in apprenticeship supports through grants, loans, tax credits, Employment Insurance benefits during in-school training, project funding, and support for the Red Seal Program, in addition to existing funding programs. canada.ca/skilled-trades

B.C. MAKING MOVES TOWARDS PROMPT PAYMENT LEGISLATION The B.C. government has established an industry working group to accelerate progress on prompt payment legislation, and the Mechanical Contractors Association of B.C. (MCABC), the Electrical Contractors Association of B.C. (ECABC) and the B.C. Construction Association (BCCA) have all acknowledged the progress and look forward to participating in moving the legislation forward. The new working group is tasked with providing industry expertise and guidance to shape development of legislation specifically for B.C. The three associations held a series of Town Hall meetings (November 2021) which brought to light the success of HPACMAG.COM

CANADIANS RECOGNIZED AMONG ASHRAE OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS During its 2022 Winter Conference in Las Vegas ASHRAE (the international society of heating, refrigeration and air conditioning engineers) recognized the outstanding achievements and contributions of its members. This year ASHRAE honoured 25 members with the distinction of Fellow, a recognition for those who have made Robert Bean, Fellow substantial contributions in HVAC/R. Among those hon- ASHRAE oured this year were two Canadians: Robert Bean, president (retired) of Indoor Climate Consultants in Calgary, and a long-time contributor to HPAC Magazine; and Tim McGinn, P.Eng., principal, McGinn Technical Services in Calgary, currently a vice president on the ASHRAE Board of Directors. A team from the University of British Columbia claimed first place in the HVAC Design Calculations category in the recent ASHRAE Student Design Competition. MEET SHOW IN MONCTON The Mechanical Electrical Electronic Technology (MEET) Show, traditionally taking place every two years, returns to its regular cycle this May 4-5 at the Moncton Coliseum in Moncton, New Brunswick. We look forward to working with the Ministry of the Attorney General to advance this work, including how best to ensure it is implemented to help all businesses relying on it throughout B.C.” The working group will be managed by the Ministry of the Attorney General and include industry organizations representing all major stakeholders. mcabc.org BUILDING INTENTIONS HIT RECORD HIGHS IN 2021 According to year-end results published by Statistics Canada, the total value of building permits surged 25.6% to $126.5 billion in 2021 over the year prior, the strongest annual growth ever recorded, led largely by the residential sector. However, StatCan reports that material price and labour cost increases in the construction industry accounted for almost two-thirds of the increase. On a constant dollar basis (2012=100) the total value of building permits still increased by 9.3% to $88.5 billion. Residential construction intentions in 2021 were up 29.9%, reaching a record $87.2 billion, with single family permit values rising 41.5% to $40.7 billion, representing 81,000 new units—the most since 2013. The results also reveal that residential construction booms are moving away from larger city centres. Smaller cities in Ontario, like Peterborough (+134.1%), Barrie (+107.5%) and Oshawa (+79.0%) were surging in 2021, as well as Kelowna, B.C. (+75.8%), all of

these centres reporting large gains. Multi-family permit values also hit a record high, rising 21.1% to $46.5 billion, following a similar pattern of faster growth in smaller metro areas including Kelowna (+175.1%) and Lethbridge (+159.0%) in Alberta, and Saguenay (+145.1%) and Trois-Rivières (+120.3%) in Quebec. The non-residential sector (institutional, commercial and industrial) was up 17.1% to $39.6 billion in 2021 over 2020, continuing to recover to pre-pandemic levels. Only the institutional com-

ponent exceeded 2019 levels, while the commercial and industrial sectors were both roughly 8% below 2019 totals. The total value of building permits in the fourth quarter of 2021 alone jumped 10.3% to a new high of $33.1 billion, surpassing the previous record of $31.5 billion set in the first quarter of 2021. STATE OF THE INDUSTRY One of the stand out sessions was a “State of the HVAC/R Industry” panel discussion moderated by Bryan Orr, host of the HVAC School podcast. The standing-room-only session, held in one of the larger conference rooms at the convention centre, included: Mick Schwedler, president of ASHRAE; Stephen Yurek, president/ CEO of Air Conditioning Heating Refrigeration Institute (AHRI); Talbot Gee, CEO of Heating, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration Distributors (HARDI); Roberta MacGillivray, president of the National Air Filtration Association (NAFA); and Dominick Guarino, CEO of National Comfort Institute (NCI).

The panelists covered lessons learned during the past two years and what the industry can look forward to in the year ahead as we recalibrate to a new normal. With respect to the lessons learned, Schwedler from ASHRAE noted: “Our industry has never been more essential or relevant. I don’t know necessarily that we (the industry) learned it, but the general public learned it.” He highlighted how HVAC and IAQ became a primary topic of discussion for governments, businesses, schools and parents, and the industry stepped up providing guidance and education. ASHRAE chapters around the world provided help, and one lesson learned was the importance of being able to communicate technical issues in clear terms that non-technical people could understand. “So we’ve learned how to better communicate,” said Schweder. “The other thing we’ve learned is HPACMAG.COM

xpectations were muted heading into this year’s AHR Expo held in Las Vegas from January 31 to February 2, and although crowds were lighter than more recent editions of the annual trade show the energy on the exhibition floor and in the many conference sessions was very positive. Despite lingering concerns surrounding the pandemic—which led to the cancellation of the 2021 edition of AHR scheduled for Chicago—this year’s event was still able to draw over 30,670 attendees and attracted 1,573 exhibitors spread out over 443,769 sq. ft. across two show floor halls. Canadian representatives at exhibitor booths noted a lighter showing of Canadians than in years past, but overall the mask-wearing attendees and vendors welcomed the opportunity to interact in person once again. “There have been some heavy ups and downs across the industry in recent years and we, as a community, needed to feel the inspiration that happens when we gather together under one roof,” said Mark Stevens, AHR show manager, following the event. “The 2022 AHR Expo surpassed any expectation — our exhibitors, attendees, associations, speakers and everyone involved made this event one of the most special we’ve ever hosted,” added Stevens. “If you were there, the camaraderie was hard to miss. This industry is strong and we are back on track to tackle the challenges before us.” In addition to the rows of exhibitors featuring new products and solutions for the air conditioning, heating and re-

that we are fully connected as a world. Because of communication technology we can pull in global experts in order to solve problems, and we see this as a positive moving forward.” In terms of innovations that are improving efficiencies, Schwedler spoke about connected building systems and how companies are gathering data and analyzing how a building is supposed to operate versus how is it actually operating. “They’re using digital twins—a digital model of the building—to compare with the actual building operation.” MacGillivray, CEO of Edmonton-based BGE Indoor Air Quality Solutions and the lone Canadian on the panel, noted that the increased focus on IAQ should lead to higher standards for buildings going forward. “I think before the pandemic, when we thought about human health and human productivity there was a trade-off for energy savings. Now it’s not an or, it’s an and…how do we protect human health, increase productivity and how do we manage our costs and energy efficiency.” Because of COVID-19 the buildings industry has learned much more about ventilation and filtration requirements, and MacGillivray believes that once the pandemic is gone the industry still needs to be thinking about optimizing air changes in buildings and focusing on those 0.3 and 1-micron sized particles to continue to have the greatest impact on human health, and not start HPACMAG.COM

reverting back to minimum standards. “Our focus used to be on the box, on the equipment and the installation of it,” said Yurek from AHRI. “Now, we need to address the entire HVAC system to provide efficiency and comfort. The change we will see over the next few years will be nothing we’ve seen before.” Gee from HARDI shared that supply chain issues are not going to fix themselves this year. “We all got addicted to just-in-time manufacturing as an industry and hopefully we’ve all learned some lessons.” He emphasized the importance of communication and visibility throughout the distribution channel, highlighting that contractors need to be more open and share information about jobs coming down the pipe with their suppliers to make their jobs easier. And he noted that distributors are carrying more inventory where possible, so he asks contractors to pay their bills fast to keep inventories rolling. Panelists also touched on the tight labour market. We make buildings sustainable, resilient, and we reduce the energy utilization intensity and environmental emissions. Our industry helped mitigate a global pandemic by keeping vaccines cold and their efficacy high. To recruit people, we need them to see not only a career, but also that they will be making an impact. Because that’s what most humans are looking for— they want to make a difference, they want to make things better. future recommendations from health and science/engineering agencies (the CDC, ASHRAE, EPA and the WHO) were presented with the following four key recommendations standing out: 1) Dilute: increase ventilation, discussions have been had around raising outside air requirements from 17 cfm to 34 cfm; 2) Exhaust: remove pathogen laden air by exhausting from the building with fans; 3) Contain: maintaining a relative hu-

midity level between 40-60% creates an environment where bacteria and viruses are limited in both their survival and ability to spread; 4) Clean: COVID laden particles sizes are between 0.5 and 1.5 microns. MERV 13 filters remove about 85% of particles in this range and MERV 14 removes >90%. Other suggestions to help with IAQ involve bi-polar ionization and UV lights. ith the current pandemic seemingly approaching a turning point, we can begin to reflect on the things we have learned, and arguably, we have learned that we could have done much better in one area, and that is to provide much safer indoor environments for everyone. All of us spend the vast majority of our time indoors, whether at work, school, or in the comfort of our homes. This is where we, members of the HVAC Industry can be a part of the solution. There are several options we can explore to provide safer indoor spaces, and in this article I want to review the use of hydronic system solutions in retrofit or new installations to improve air quality in buildings while also effectively managing energy consumption. Quickly looking back, after the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1918-1919, building designs changed—more fresh air was introduced to occupied spaces, and then when air conditioning was introduced, buildings became more enclosed and mechanical ventilation and energy management became the focus in the design and operations of buildings. To lower energy costs, ventilation rates were reduced to recommended levels of 12 to 17 cubic feet of air per minute (cfm) per person, depending on building use. Then COVID-19 came, and in order to make buildings safer for today and the

velocity, meaning the air can be moving too quickly to effectively kill a virus. So, when we look at these recommendations, by diluting the air (fresh air ventilation) and exhausting (spent air), combined with temperature and humidity control and minimizing air velocity, we can achieve the greatest results. This leads us into hydronic solutions, and for the purpose of this example, I want to highlight the use of chilled/heated beams in applications because they marry heating, cooling and ventilation in the same device.

thermostat and comes from infiltration (like latent), people, computers, and anything in a space that can emit heat. Most ventilation systems are designed to handle both sensible and latent loads in one piece of equipment: the air handling unit (AHU), fan coil unit (FCU), packaged units, etc. With chilled beam systems we decouple the latent and the sensible load responsibilities. This is the core design principle that can drive operating savings. The latent load is handled with a dedicated outside air system (DOAS), and the sensible load is handled in the space by the active chilled beams. As noted, the sensible load is typically 70% of the heat load, and with a chilled beam system there is little to no fan power required to handle the sensible load thus the energy savings.

TYPICAL COOLING LOADS When we look at the cooling load in a space, it is often split with 70% of the load being the sensible heat and 30% being latent heat (see Figure 1). The latent load is basically the humidity in the space that has to be removed. It can come from occupants, air infiltration and it can be introduced with the outdoor ventilation air. The sensible load is what raises the HPACMAG.COM

HOW CHILLED BEAMS WORK There are different types of chilled beams; some are simple radiation panels (passive) and others are active

chilled beams. Active chilled beams are what we will focus on (see Figure 2). These active chilled beams (CB) are induction devices. As the conditioned fresh outdoor air flows from the DOAS through the nozzles in the CB and out through its vents, it induces the air already in the space to flow up through the coil (the heat exchanger) and mix with the incoming conditioned air. In this example, when in cooling mode, the outdoor air is brought into the CB from the DOAS at a flow rate of 100 cfm (this is the latent cooling and fresh outdoor air required in the space). Through induction, the warmer space air is induced and flows over the coil and is cooled in the beam. It mixes with the outdoor conditioned air coming from the DOAS and exits the CB. In this example, the space is using 400 cfm to cool the space, but the only fan horse power (HP) used is associated with 100 of that cfm coming from the DOAS. Earlier, it was noted that low air velocity is important in minimizing virus spread. In Figure 3 (page 27) the image on top is from a test lab space that shows the path of the air coming from a CB. What you are seeing is a Coanda Effect, where because the velocity is low, the air stream hugs the surfaces (ie: ceiling and walls) and then falls through the space. The bottom graphic also shows the temperature gradient in the space conditioned by CB’s. Again, most of the delta-T in the space is at the vents of the CB. The rest of the space has a very homogenous temperature—comfort without noticeable air movement or noise.

DEDICATED OUTDOOR AIR SYSTEM (DOAS) As noted, chilled beams are a decoupled system whereby the latent load is handled in the DOAS—the fresh outdoor air is dehumidified as necessary (Figure 4, page 27). The sensible load is treated in the space by the chilled beam. In other approaches, like variable air volume (VAV) systems, the latent and sensible loads are handled in the AHU then distributed through the system. In a conventional CB design there are two loops, low temperature and high temperature to handle the latent and sensible loads. The schematic in Figure 5 (page 27) shows a low temp system handling the latent load with operating temps of 42F to 52F. The DOAS treats most of the latent load, and in this scenario there is also a fan coil at entrances to handle the instantaneous latent loads. The high temp system that handles the sensible load typically operates from 58F to 62F. The high temp system operates above the dew point to prevent condensation and typically operates on a four-degree delta T. This four-pipe system (cooling only, six pipes when you add heating) involves many components and pieces of 30

equipment, notably two chillers with pumps and accessories. It’s worth noting here, there are typically two-way valves at each chilled beam. Another design option is to combine a single heating/cooling plant and provide local mixing for the two different temperature requirements between the latent loads at entrances and sensible loads at the chilled beams (Figure 6). This is a primary/secondary hydronics system design. The main loop transports all the Btu’s required to satisfy the entire load of the system when it is operating at 100% design load condi-

tions. We control this loop off of delta T, maximizing the chiller efficiencies. The secondary loads are piped to the primary loop by closely spaced tees (or engineered fittings) hydraulically decoupling the secondary loops from the primary. In the first secondary loop a wet rotor circulator, sized to the load of the DOAS, circulates the water. The DOAS is the first load as it will have the biggest load—in this case water enters the system at 42F and leaves at 45F. The next load is a chilled beam, where we are using some form of mixing device (could be three- or four-way moduHPACMAG.COM

lating valves, or variable speed injection mixing as shown in this example). The purpose of mixing the fluid temperature is to circulate water through the chilled beam and maintain the temperature at the beam above the dew point to avoid condensation. This example shows a LoFlo mixing block, an engineered solution made up of a hydraulic separator and two circulators. The circulator on the chilled beam side circulates the water through the CB at a constant flow. The circulator on the primary loop side operates at a variable speed to inject enough chilled water to maintain the temperature in the chilled beam above the dew point. As the water circulates through the primary loop the temperature cascades as it passes each secondary load. As long as the system is sized to handle all of the loads, the system will satisfy each load.

CONTROL STRATEGY The right control strategy is critical, and each room is controlled by a specific chilled beam controller (Figure 7). It is required that we monitor several key things: 1) the conditions of the air coming in from the DOAS unit—temperature and humidity; 2) the space conditions, temperature and dew point; 3) then look at the water temperature feeding the CB; 4) assuming conditions are safe to operate, the system ensures just enough chilled water makes it to the beam; 5) continuously monitor all of these conditions adjusting as necessary; 6) if the dewpoint changes, we have the ability to track the supply water temperatures to the beam to insure condensation doesn't develop on the CB; 7) if conditions are not conducive to operation, the system will shut down to prevent condensation

In brief, here’s a summary of the design considerations for a one-pipe active chilled beam solution: size the DOAS for largest of loads (it handles the latent load); consider fan coil units around entrances; control entering chilled water to beams at 5F above dew point; design for 4 to 5-degree delta T for chilled beam but keep the primary loop at 14 to 16-degree delta T; and consider single pipe injection pumping to maximize energy savings. AFTER ALL THESE YEARS Why heat pumps will expand the hydronics market in the years to come. BY JOHN SIEGENTHALER

’ve been designing hydronic systems for 44 years. As with most technologies, there have been tremendous changes in what a “typical” residential hydronic heating system looks like today compared with what it did in 1978. Back then it was common to see a single cast-iron boiler—fired by natural gas or fuel oil—supplying a distribution system consisting of one to three zones of finned-tube baseboard. The boiler usually had a “tankless” coil heat exchanger for providing domestic hot water, and the water temperature leaving that boiler was 180F (82C) or higher. Although it’s possible to create such a system today, most informed hydronic system designers would likely try to talk you out of it. I know I would.

CHANGE IS CONSTANT So why should anyone alter an approach that has kept tens of thousands of North American homes comfortable for decades? The “short answer” would be the greatly improved hardware and design methods that exist today. Here are a few examples that have all taken place during my career: • The introduction of cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) tubing to North America and a subsequent resurrection of radiant panel heating. • The introduction of modulating/condensing (mod/con) boilers that pushed thermal efficiency (annual fuel utilization efficiency/AFUE) from mid-80% into the mid-90s. • Controls that morphed from those using springs, glass bulbs partially

filled with mercury, and capillary tubes, to microprocessor-based controls that can manage entire multiload systems and wirelessly communicate with installers. • Circulators with electronically commutated (EC) motors that can automatically adapt their operation to the pressure and flow requirements of a hydronic system. • WiFi thermostats that let you change the temperature in a zone from almost anywhere in the world. • A broader understanding of the importance of and methods for implementing hydraulic separation in multi-circulator systems. Many of these introductions were a really “big deal” when they occurred. Today, most of them have reached commodity status. They are readily

available from multiple suppliers and used on a high percentage of system installations. There’s little doubt that this new hardware, when properly applied, allows modern hydronic systems to provide even better comfort and convenience than that available 40-plus years ago.

AN UNPRECEDENTED TREND So much for the “short answer.” The “long answer” is based on a relatively new word in our social vocabulary: Decarbonization. The concept that the human race must reduce our carbon emissions as a prerequisite to survival on this planet. There are widely varying beliefs on how “decarbonization” should be dealt with. They range from complete denial that any action is needed, to proposals that would radically change just about everything we do. I suspect that such a spectrum of opinion exists among those reading HPACMAG.COM

this article. That’s okay, but read on to see that there is a unifying concept that can emerge from all this.

POSSIBILITIES RATHER THAN POLITICS I learned long ago not to pepper politics into my presentations or writing. Rather, let me attempt a rational assessment of our current market situation: It appears highly likely that the energy used by future hydronic heating and cooling systems will be increasingly supplied through electricity and less by the burning of fossil fuels. Let me attempt another (practical) inference to that last sentence. The global movement away from fossil fuel and toward electrification could very well be one of the biggest opportunities ever presented to the North American hydronics industry. To understand why that opportunity has been laid before us, let’s start by looking backward. Hydronic systems

were the “norm” in many buildings prior to the availability of central cooling systems, which began entering the North American market in the late 1950s. Central cooling was a monumental step forward for the HVAC market. It shifted focus to forced air distribution systems, which could deliver that highly anticipated cool/dry air in the summer, as well as heated air in the winter. The compromises associated with forced air heating, including air temperature stratification, dirt accumulating in ducting, and low interior relative humidity due to increased air leakage, were tolerated because, come summer, the cool/dry air delivered by those forced air systems was considered a “godsend.” Although mid-twentieth century hydronic systems provided excellent comfort, they didn’t provide cooling, and that, more than anything else, eroded their market share into single digits as forced air systems leveraged Continued on p38 MARCH 2022 | HPAC

their ability to provide heating and cooling. Think about it. As a comfort pro, how many times have you encountered someone who was absolutely “sold” on the benefits of hydronic heating, only to abandon ship when told that a completely separate system would be required for cooling? It doesn’t have to be that way anymore. Water-to-water heat pumps connected to geothermal loops, as well as air-towater heat pumps, can provide superior comfort heating, domestic hot water, and chilled water for cooling. They fit beautifully into the ambitious electrification efforts now underway in just about every part of North America. They enable a mechanical contractor to provide answers to questions like: “I really want to use radiant floor heating in my new home, but what do I do about cooling?” They also allow that contractor to provide a “total comfort (and DHW) solution,” take sole responsibility for the system, and profit from providing additional materials and labour on each sale.

THERE FOR THE TAKING Hydronic pros who choose to read the “tea leaves” regarding heat pumps, and act smartly on that information, will surely profit. Opportunities for integrating heat pumps into hydronic systems are already occurring in many areas of North America. Demand will increase as provincial and state electrification goals continue to shape the market. The movement toward decarbonization is one of the biggest opportunities set before the North American hydronics market in decades. With all due respect to product development, this opportunity is far more consequential than next year’s new offerings for boilers, WiFi thermostats, or press tools. It’s also an opportunity that comes with many “advocates” such as architects, low energy home builders, Solar PV installers, utility reps, regional energy planners, environmental proponents, and yes - even politicians. The words “heat pump” will grab their attention, setting up the opportunity for you to explain how hydronics technology completes the comfort part of the offering. Like most things related to hydronics, there are many possible system configurations that involve a heat pump along with space heating, cooling, and domestic water heating loads. One of my favorite approaches uses an air-to-water heat pump supplying heat to a buffer tank that in turn supplies a zoned space heating distribution system. Figure 1 (page 35) shows the concept. The heat emitters could be radiant panels, fan-coils, panel radiators, or a combination of all three. They should all be sized to provide design load output to their associated spaces using a supply water temperature no higher than 120F (49C). The buffer tank contains a high surface area coil heat exchanger. Its purpose is to preheat domestic water through the majority of the required temperature lift. An electric tankless heater provides any required temperature boost. In cooling mode the chilled water leaving the heat pump goes to the coil of a ducted air handler, which provides cooling to the entire building. Note that the heat pump is labelled as variable-speed. It uses an inverter-driven compressor that allows cooling capacity to be adjusted as necessary (and within the limits of speed control) to supply a constant 45 to 50F (7 to 10C) stream of chilled water to the air handler. This approach eliminates the need to chill the buffer tank in summer. The latter can remain heated to provide most if not all of the domestic hot water requirement. In summer the control priority is keeping the buffer tank heated to ensure a high percentage of domestic water heating. Cooling can be temporarily interrupted to bring the tank up to temperature.

We’re surrounded by digitally connected gadgets, now we can capture thermal energy data to help building owners improve the efficiency of their operations. BY CURTIS BENNETT

power, it does not account for the power used by the technology that connects all the IoT devices together. Connected technology is the way the world is moving, and I think IoT is important to the future of this industry as well. I wrote an article about a year ago now (HPAC, March 2021) on the topic of Btu meters, or thermal energy meters. I explored what they are, how they work with hydronic heating systems in multi-family residential buildings and also why we need them in North America. In this article I want to talk about the IoT future of not only Btu metering but a lot of devices in our field. First, let’s consider what IoT devices may be lurking in our homes today. Do you have a smart phone? Do you walk around with it in your pocket? Do you own a smart watch? These devices are gathering data all the time. For exam-

ple: “How many steps have you walked today?” While these devices show you how many steps you’ve taken, they also know where you walk, when you walk, and if you walk fast or run. Patterns start to emerge from this data, and that’s the good stuff. The stuff that manufacturers and marketers want. Who has an Alexa in their house, or Google home? How many times have you just been sitting there and the device says, “Sorry I didn’t hear that.” But you didn’t even say anything. Or do you have Siri on your phone. I think these kinds of data gathering tools play on the edges of privacy issues, but we let them in. They make our lives easier, they do, they really do. But there is a price we pay for that convenience. My point is that there are IoT devices everywhere around you—they Continued on p42 HPACMAG.COM

he Internet-of-Things (IoT) is a vastly growing industry in our increasingly connected world, not just in HVAC but in all industries and all aspects of our lives. It has been reported that there are over 35.8 billion IoT devices installed worldwide now, and that’s expected to grow to over 75 billion by 2025. Data centers around the world are storing vast amounts of information, not only the data gathered from IoT devices but companies like Facebook, Google, Amazon, IBM and Apple are gathering massive volumes of data that are hard to comprehend. The data centers being built now take around 100MW to run. That’s MEGAWATTS. To put that in perspective that is enough electricity to power 80,000 to 100,000 homes! And that’s just for data storage and calculating

have been here for a while and they already have you! Ok, so how does this relate to HVAC? Well, I forgot to mention the largest thermostat company in the world, NEST. They were bought by Google, not because Google wanted to get into the heating business, but because those thermostats gather data. Data that could perhaps be sold to other businesses, like duct cleaning or furnace maintenance companies. Or this data could be integrated into algorithms so that when you search items on the web it already knows some information about you, so you can be more easily targeted for ads. Boilers are also coming equipped with connections to the internet. Valves are being connected, zone controls, boiler controls, all sorts of items in our industry are already connected—already gathering data. These ‘smart’ devices make things easier for installers, maintenance contractors and facility managers. This is where it gets cool. At least for me because I get to make these devices. Being connected is not a bad thing, it gives both contractors and end users the ability to do things easier. There is an “App” for that. You want it hotter in your basement, open the App and turn up the heat. You want to see what the boiler temperature is or what the temperature in each of your zones is, look at the App. How much water you have used in the past three days? Look at the App. Not to sound too cliché, but information is power. This leads us to thermal energy metering in multi-family residential buildings. If you put Btu meters in buildings you can uncover an awful lot of information. Not only will you know the amount of energy used in each metered location, which is the primary function of the Btu meter, but you could see the fluid pressure in every room, the temperature in every room, the flow rate in every room. 42

“The new generation of thermal energy meters will be smaller and connected.” A building owner would be able to see what time of the day the energy is being used, how much energy, and how much one suite is using compared to the others in the building. Building owners and facility managers can see a lot of information that will help keep tabs on the health of the building’s heating or cooling system. And tenants would also be able to see how they are using energy and modify their behaviours to be more energy efficient. I need to put one caveat here: this information can’t be gathered with today’s traditional thermal energy metering devices. Like I had said before in the previous article, for retrofit situations, most conventional metering devices don’t accommodate the hydronic heat emitting devices found in many multi-family residential buildings, like fin tube radiators for example. Not only because of the size of the metering devices, but because of wiring and temperature probe length restrictions. So the new generation of thermal energy meters will be smaller and connected, and they will be capable of gathering all the information that building owners will need. The very core of our industry is about providing comfort in the most efficient way possible. Hydronics industry pros know that hot water heating is more efficient than forced air heating. This does not mean we stop there, we need to provide our customers with tools they can use to create the most efficient heating solutions for their buildings. Yes it’s a tall order, but the devices are here. Btu meters, and for that matter flow meters on hot and cold water in a building, are becoming essential information, and that’s why they are be-

ing talked about more and more. Well actually, I think we are past the talking stage and we are in the beginnings of the implementation stage. As I’ve also stated before, these connected, smart thermal energy metering devices are the final frontier of billable areas for these building owners, and these owners are seemingly the ones pushing to get these devices into their buildings, not only at the design stage of new builds but also as retrofits into existing facilities. It’s an opportunity for those contractors who embrace the technology, become subject matter experts, learn the standards and codes in your jurisdiction and build out metering installation and maintenance programs for developers and building owners. Ok, I got in a little deep. I am passionate about this stuff. I really like helping our industry make devices to save energy. If you are wondering more about how the big tech companies use your IoT data, which you gather for them, check out the movie called the Social Dilemma on Netflix. LOL, Netflix is another one. SO MANY UNSUNG HEROES The mechanical trade operates effectively every day thanks to the people on the front lines and those behind the scenes. BY IAN McTEER

Especially compromised were the small business owners, from the contracting side to wholesalers, many of them have been or will be undermined by the pandemic and its erratic remediation. Fortunately, as Spring is around the corner, the most recent movement from governments is to open up, freeing us all to get back to the new normal.

IT’S THE PEOPLE And so, we press on. Earlier I used the term “near miraculous” to describe how things get done from start to finish in our industry. There’s no miracle, only

the many thousands of people doing better than an average day’s work to fuel this industry. Remembering scientists like Michael Faraday, and engineers like Willis Haviland Carrier, to innovators like Frederick McKinley Jones, our industry helps to keep other industries humming, provides thermal comfort for billions of people and animals, and makes it possible to have fresh food on the tables of billions more. I talk about decades of brilliant scientific discoveries and scores of superb engineering accomplishments related to HVAC/R and the building industry more often than not. However, that’s not nearly where it ends. Like the health care system, for example, surgical interventions regularly save people from all sorts of maladies, yet without trained nurses, respirologists, lab technicians and all the other people running hospitals, the surgeon would not be able to operate on anyone. Likewise in HVAC/R, without a stream of knowledgeable people from consulting engineering onwards no product will ever be specified, installed or serviced. HPACMAG.COM

ot unlike all the other industries servicing our modern world, the mechanical trade is an incredibly complex system that operates at near miraculous effectiveness every day. I have been observing industry business from the sidelines since well before the COVID pandemic befell all of us. To be sure, our industry continued to operate efficiently in the face of unending government legislation posing restrictions, lockdowns, curfews, and vaccination mandates in such an unpredictable and asymmetric manner on the entire country.

Hats off to the wholesalers and counter salespeople providing sales and service support for HVAC contractors.

While scientists and engineers populate the upper echelons of this industry, and rightly so as products, processes and implementation of technologies must be proven safe, efficient and reliable, there are so many other people involved in making our industry work. I’m compelled to give a brief shoutout to several industry groups I have worked with over the years, and I know I’ll miss some folks performing valuable work within our industry, there are so many things going on every day that I’d truly have to write a book to cover all the good works.

SALESPEOPLE Ask salespeople how the world goes around and I’m sure they’ll tell you: "NOTHING happens without a sale!" Once an entrepreneur or a factory team develop an HVAC widget, it had better be saleable or the creators face bankruptcy. I once attended a manufacturer focus group populated by engineers from the factory and a wide array of small HPACMAG.COM

HVAC business owners, including service managers and technicians. Everyone was tasked with designing their dream residential furnace and encouraged to add every bell and whistle we could think of—everything! As our individual lists were added to a large whiteboard, I saw many great ideas, and the engineers said, “We can do all these things.” Then the key question: “Can you sell it?” Silence spread over the room, even the experienced business owners knew that such an enhanced product replete with built-in wonders for every functionwould be a difficult sell. Thus, the final iteration of a product can go to market by way of factoryowned distribution or by a more popular model known as two-step distribution, in which a sales agency or wholesale supply house does all the leg work—developing and servicing a customer base utilizing an in-house sales force. Two-step distribution also provides warehousing, parts and warranty administration, product deliveries and so

on, leaving the factory free to focus on manufacturing and new product development. The supply house sales force must create a customer base for HVAC products and service those customers very well. An HVAC contractor must then sell the appropriate product to an end user or homeowner. Sales is a difficult job. Successful salespeople have invariably invested some of their time in learning the sales process and in improving their techniques using professional coaches, many of whom are available to wholesaler and contractor salespeole alike. The act of selling can often boil down to those industry persons least likely to be thought of as a salesperson, like a cheerful receptionist or a friendly and knowledgeable counter salesperson— indirect sales if you like. Some service techs resist having to offer company services to homeowners, but in my view, such activities are essential to any company. I do not mean selling products or services that are not legitimately needed, but the next time a contactor burns out, why not offer an upgraded, higher value replacement contactor that might prevent repeated failures? HVAC companies prosper when everyone pitches in—profitability often translates to better wages and benefits. So, thank you salespeople (that goes for inside salespeople too); you are making the HVAC world go around.

MARKETING Once thought of as advertising, the idea behind marketing is to promote products in their best possible light so that the phone starts ringing, or internet clicks provide leads, for the aforementioned salesforce. I like this quote from department store and marketing guru John Wanamaker who quipped that: “Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don’t know which half.” Still true today, many HVAC business Continued on p50 MARCH 2022 | HPAC

owners utilize skilled marketers to ensure their specific message is heard. Marketers exist to create sales campaigns using advertisements for all media types from print and television to radio and the Internet. I have worked with marketers on designing sales incentives for contractors including holiday trips and bonus prizes, along with other demanding activities such as designing major trade show booths, end cap displays for big box stores and portable show booths for shopping malls, used mainly by residential contractors to help generate local sales leads. Marketers well know that nothing happens without a sale.

WHOLESALE PARTS COUNTER I hear you brothers and sisters on the counter. It’s -15C today as I write, and I know some parts are unavailable, but I also know what it’s like telling a tech or business owner, even after checking inventory at all the branch stores, calling the factory…maybe a competitor, that the part is not available anytime soon. And the pandemic hasn’t helped. Counter salespeople provide sales and service support for customers while crafting price quotes, stocking shelves,

updating inventory, processing warranty claims and handling cash and credit card transactions. Keeping a universe of part numbers, model and serial numbers, along with product codes swirling around inside one’s head within this so-called fast-paced environment calls for kudos all around.

HVAC/R TRAINERS AND TECH SUPPORT I would argue there are not enough people working in training and tech support roles within our industry. No doubt, dedicated educators from the community colleges, organizations such as HRAI, manufacturer product knowledge representatives, wholesaler tech and training programs, along with help from dozens of independent organizations and Internet-based groups like Gary McCreadie’s HVAC Know It All and Bryan Orr’s HVAC School are helping, but more will need to be done simply to keep up with the crop of new industry workers about to start their careers. To all the technical support and trainers out there, thank you for doing what you do. Many thanks to manufacturers and distributors willing to reinforce

their bottom lines by investing in high quality HVAC/R support roles.

HVAC metal fabrication shops turn out the air handling infrastructure so important to human comfort, yet their combined efforts remain unheralded by those enjoying the benefits of a welltuned air distribution system. Installers take the prescribed metal pieces and knit them into a precise network of seemingly confusing air highways. Figure 1 (previous page) depicts a commercial duct system installation before the ceiling gets installed; too bad, such a beautiful installation will go unseen. Bravo sheet metal workers and thank you for so many jobs so well done.

fast leaving little time for reupping knowledge and skill sets. Figure 2 depicts a magnificent residential zoned hydronic system from the 2021 Sweet Heat contest winners Riverdale Plumbing in Toronto, congrats. Last year’s contest with entries from across Canada included some absolutely brillant residential and commercial work, thank you all.

HVAC AND REFRIGERATION TECHNICIANS, RESIDENTIAL AND ICI Having spent years installing furnaces and repairing unhappy equipment in a variety of applications, I won’t say I ever felt totally unappreciated. Indeed, homeowners especially were often very generous providing snacks and even a tip here and there. But not all techs receive so much love; it really is the little things like getting stuck in traffic, no place to park, lugging heavy tools for what seems like HPACMAG.COM

a mile (or even a kilometer), only to find out the mechanical room is so tiny you need a feeler gauge to tell where the wall ends, and the equipment begins. And of course we have Canadian weather to deal with (see Figure 3). Don’t get me going about rooftop units (Figure 4). Yet you do it, since it’s important to you that the unit runs properly once again and it’s good to know that a customer you might not even see will be comfortable. I visited New York City some years ago. Sitting in an open-top city tour bus waiting for our group to start the tour, I noticed a Trane service vehicle circle the block several times, no doubt searching for a next-to-impossible available parking spot in an incredibly busy Manhattan that seems to be an endless sea of buildings perpetually under construction or renovation. I immediately felt sorry for the tech as so many of us have been there, done that.

The late German economist Rudi Dornbush said, “things take longer to happen than you think they will, and then they happen faster than you thought they could.” It hadn’t occurred to me while I cleaned pilot lights, replaced thermocouples and checked fan belt tension that I’d soon be dealing with HVAC equipment monitored by several computers. HVAC innovation is not slowing down, yet our industry needs many more dedicated practitioners, especially those “on the tools,” in my opinion. I know I’ve left out many others working a variety of HVAC jobs every day, often indirectly but of no less importance in my opinion. There are accountants, bookkeepers, receptionists, (even HR), material handlers, truck drivers all doing HVAC by supporting their many colleagues. And I shouldn’t forget industry associations and trade publications like HPAC magazine and others that regularly update all of us with actionable insights and important news. DYNAMIC VAV OPTIMIZATION Assessing the introduction of machine learning and artificial intelligence into the HVAC controls of commercial and institutional buildings. BY MARK BYVELDS AND NATALIA MALAFEEVA

e have arrived at the next stage of building control. Moving from pneumatic to DDC (direct digital control) represented a major shift in control equipment and, more importantly, in the feedback coming from building systems. The next stage—the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI)—builds upon DDC to use that feedback for better control. What does better control mean? First, it meets the needs of the building and its occupants. Rather than reacting to a space becoming warmer than desired, the control system can predict it will become warmer than required, and make the necessary adjustments. Second, it is more efficient. Setpoints change constantly based on current or upcoming demand, meaning building systems deliver what is needed at the moment it is needed—and nothing more.

While understandable, these fears are unfounded. Any AI-based solution needs local oversight to allow the operator to see how systems are being controlled, and to step in and override systems if they become concerning. The rise of digitalization may bring with it changes in skillsets for building technicians (the ability to support growing connectivity between devices and work with multiple platforms), but the core demands of the role remain. Mechanical infrastructure still needs to be maintained; it will just become demand-based instead of time-based. Efficiency opportunities still need to be evaluated, and technology will help inform us where to look.

DYNAMIC VAV OPTIMIZATION Thus far, the focus of our company’s Smart Infrastructure—as it relates to AI in building HVAC control—has been on variable air volume (VAV) systems. VAV systems are common throughout the commercial and institutional sector, so there are numerous opportunities for achieving better results through the application of machine learning and AI. The first question for many may be, “Why?” What is it that AI and machine learning can do that a modern building management system (BMS) cannot? The answer is adaptability. Machine learning crunches massive amounts of data—better than any person possibly could—to help us understand the complex dynamics of a specific building. This understanding allows spaces to be conditioned based on what is actually needed as opposed to what we think is needed, especially as the use

and occupancy of a building changes. An AI approach also allows for a more efficient and cost-effective BMS setup. Rather than programming complex, multi-variable strategies for every building, a common cloud-based AI model can be applied to an unlimited number of buildings. Fault tolerance can also play a significant role. Even a great piece of energyefficient programming can repeatedly stumble. For example, a temperature sensor receiving direct sunlight in the afternoon which causes the trim and respond static pressure reset to fail time and again as one zone thinks it needs more cooling than required. The result is missed energy and costsaving opportunities. Machine learning will identify this pattern of failure; it will flag the issue for investigation and learn to ignore this sensor from the overall strategy, thereby allowing energy savings to be achieved. When answering the 'Why?,' one should also consider the 'Why not?' use AI and machine learning. Depending on the facility, bi-directional Internet access to a cloud platform may not be an option. In this case, an on-premises solution would be needed, which may be cost-prohibitive. The traditional cost/benefit analysis stands true, as well: what is AI offering that existing controls cannot achieve? In a practical sense, the Why not? may also be related to fear—fear of losing control over a building or, as a building operator, fear of losing a job.

ter; increasing fresh air ventilation is likely to lower indoor humidity, yet higher air change rates are helpful for lowering risk. In a scenario like this, AI logic can determine the lowestrisk point for balancing these ever-changing factors, whereas a person or BMS simply cannot.

But what is a better decision? In short, it depends on the priority: users are able to select operation in Green Mode to prioritize comfort and energy efficiency, or Defence Mode to prioritize airborne viral transmission risk reduction. Green Mode overcomes many of the VAV Optimization challenges conventional BAS strategies struggle with: multivariable decision-making, forward prediction, and fault tolerance, to name a few. Using existing control hardware in the building, the end result has been a roughly 25% energy savings in systems without an existing pressure reset strategy, and a 10% reduction in systems that have one. Defence Mode allows for a central strategy to be defined and easily updated so sites running DVO are capable of deploying the latest recommendations from ASHRAE and CDC. Currently, this is a balance of fresh air changes, maintaining target humidity and space temperatures and, in many cases, increasing them compared to conventional setpoints. AI really shines when conditions are not ideal, as when a building is struggling to maintain target humidity in the winHPACMAG.COM

DVO was recently deployed in the office space of a critical facility in Toronto which remained open and partially occupied throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. In this case, the strategy is to operate in Defence Mode to mitigate transmission risk, then switch to Green Mode as soon as it is deemed safe. The application of machine learning—in which a database is built to help the engine understand how zones within the building react to ventilation changes and differing environmental conditions—allows for setpoints to be adjusted dynamically based on what is currently the optimal approach. When in Defence Mode, this takes into account total air changes, outside air volume, filtration, space temperature and relative humidity, as well as constraints of the ventilation system, such as heating, humidification and airflow capacity. In Green Mode, the machine learning application adjusts static pressure and supply air temperature based on conditions in each VAV zone to drive down energy consumption as much as possible while still meeting the space requirements. By knowing how the building will react in upcoming weather, it will seek out the lowest energy consumption for fan power, heating, cooling and re-heating, and do so proactively. With all of these variables at play, and “best case” conditions changing regularly, it is easy to see where machine learning can fit into building control. This approach meets the near-term need of risk management while also supporting the facility’s long-term energy efficiency goals. Although operating in Defence Mode, both Green and Defence modes were tested during commissioning. Results have shown an average reduction in AHU static pressure of 57% while maintaining airflow requirements to terminal units, resulting in an average fan power reduction of 35%, and delivering a pro-rated annual benefit of 126,000 kWh (approximately $19,000 and 3.8 t CO2e) across five AHUs. As we seek to further reduce energy consumption and move forward on sustainability targets, it is absolutely necessary to use energy wisely. CO2 AS REFRIGERANT? YES…..CO2 After falling out of favour in the 1960s, CO2 is making a comeback as a refrigerant for supermarket refrigeration systems. BY DAVE DEMMA

ertainly there has been a move towards considering and using CO2 as a refrigerant in supermarket systems in the last several years. The movement has seen a tremendous increase in use in Europe, and to a lesser degree it has seen an increase in Canada and the U.S. Yet, I’ll have to admit that I haven’t been too enamored with CO2 … until recently. In early February I was given the opportunity to present an overview of CO2 supermarket refrigeration systems for a couple of contracting groups, which provided me with the motivation to do some in-depth research on the subject. So, given the fact that global warming—I mean, climate change—is not a topic that will leave the public eye any time soon, perhaps it’s timely to discuss the merits of CO2 as a refrigerant, along with discussing how it’s different

than the refrigerants we’re using today. As a preface to the CO2 discussion, let’s review how we got to the point that a refrigerant that fell out of favour in the 1960s was given a second life. The first man-made glass of carbonated water, fit for human consumption, was created by Dr. Joseph Priestley in 1767. Later, in 1832, John Matthews invented an apparatus for making carbonated water which he began mass marketing, and at around the same time as CO2 was the gaining popularity as the ingredient that transformed ordinary water to "sparkling" water came the use of CO2 (R-744) as a refrigerant. One of the marketed benefits of CO2, as compared to other contemporary refrigerants of the time (Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) or Ammonia (NH3)), was that it was non-flammable and non-toxic. In addition to widespread use in the shipping industry, CO2 saw use in some commercial applications as well. It reached its heyday in the 1930’s. In the 1950’s we saw the introduction of Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerants (R-11, R-12, R-502) into the market-

place which were a dagger to the heart of CO2. The 1960’s saw the end of CO2 as a viable option as a refrigerant. Of course, as great as CFCs were from a practicality standpoint they had a problem. Scientists realized CFCs were contributing to the depletion of the ozone layer, which led to the development of the Montreal Protocol which went into effect in 1987. This international agreement established phaseout dates for CFCs, and this was followed by phase out dates for the lower ozone depletion potential (ODP) Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) refrigerants like R-22. Next to come are the hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants. Interestingly enough, while HCFCs were less threatening to the ozone layer, in the 1990s these refrigerants were targeted as being contributors towards global warming….aka high GWP (global warming potential) refrigerants. The Kyoto Protocol, created in 1997, set reduction targets for greenhouse gases, which included HFCs. The Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol outlines a phase down of HFCs. Which brings us full circle back to CO2 which has a rather benign GWP of 1. In actuality, GWP is a relative measure of the amount of heat a greenhouse gas traps in the atmosphere. The GWP number is a comparison between the amount of heat trapped by a certain mass of the gas in question to the amount of heat trapped by a similar mass of carbon dioxide. So, R-22’s GWP of 1810 means that a given mass of R-22 has 1,810 times the effect on global warming than an equal mass of CO2 does. For comparison, see the chart left (Figure 1) for HPACMAG.COM

ical HCFC/HFC system. First off, the similarities: remember, refrigeration is the achievement of a temperature below that of the immediate surroundings. Regardless of the type of refrigerant in use, we are still attempting to lower the temperature of the immediate surroundings. Refrigeration is not cooling, but rather transferring heat from the refrigerated space to the refrigerating medium (the refrigerant). The result is a lower temperature in the space. So, it’s still a simple heat transfer process. And regardless of the refrigerant, we are using any fluid that has a saturation temperature (boiling point) that is somewhere between 5F to 20F lower than the space temperature. So, regardless of the type of refrigerant, if we’re attempting to keep frozen vegetables at -10F, the refrigerant saturation temperature in the evaporator will likely be approximately -20F. So, while there are some very obvious differences between CO2 and HCFCs/ HFCs, we’re still refrigerating. We’re still applying the same basic principles that are the basis for every vapour-compression cycle used to refrigerate. But now let’s introduce some CO2 facts, relevant definitions, and explore some of the major differences between HCFC/HFC refrigerants and CO2:

GWP values of common refrigerants in use today. The main drivers to determine which refrigerant might be the best choice going forward are as follows: environmental properties (low GWP); energy efficiency; safety (flammability and toxicity); cost; and availability. Looking at CO2 through the lens of those drivers reveals it to be quite favourable: GWP = 1; under certain conditions it can be efficient; it is very safe; it’s quite inexpensive; and it is readily HPACMAG.COM

available. In addition, some of the challenges that led to CO2’s demise in the 1960s, notably its extreme high pressure operation, have been overcome with new advances in technology. There is no question that a CO2 system is going to be different than the typical refrigeration system that most supermarket technicians are familiar with today. So, let’s take a look at the similarities and the differences between working with CO2 verus your typ-

See Figure 2 and Figure 3 on page 63. • Critical Temperature: The maximum temperature at which a vapour can be converted into a liquid by increasing the vapour’s temperature. If the vapor is above the critical temperature, it cannot exist in the liquid state. • Critical Pressure: The pressure required to liquefy a gas at its critical temperature. • Triple Point: The temperature and pressure at which the solid phase, liquid phase and vapour phase of a pure substance can coexist in equilibrium. See Figure 4. • Sublimation: The transition of a substance from the solid phase directly into the vapour phase. Sublimation occurs at temperatures and pressures below the triple point. • Subcritical: CO2 Systems where the high side pressure is below the critical temperature (87.9F) and critical pressure (~1055 PSIG). • Transcritical: CO2 Systems that are designed to operate at pressures above the critical pressure of ~1055 PSIG. See Figure 5. As stated above, every substance (including all refrigerants) has a critical point. However, the commonly used refrigerants never come close to conditions where the system is operating near the critical point. For example, the critical temperature for R-22 is 205.1F. To put this into practical terms, if a condition ever existed in an R-22 system where the saturated condensing temperature was at 205.1F, the system high side pressure would need to be 723.7 PSIA for a change of state (vapour to liquid) to occur. This condition is never going to happen in an R-22 system. On the other hand, the critical temperature for CO2 is 87.9F, with the critical pressure at ~1055 PSIG. So, a CO2 system operating with an air-cooled 66

condenser, selected with a 10F TD, will reach its critical temperature when the outdoor ambient temperature reaches 77.9F. That doesn’t allow too many locations to use CO2 without planning for Transcritical operation. So, while there are similarities between the more common HCFC/HFC refrigeration systems being used in supermarkets today and CO2 systems that are slowing coming on the scene, there are some very notable differences as well. That's all I have room for now, as this is a complex topic to explain. So please come by for part two of this article in

Traditionally, solids-handling sewage pumps in the 4/10 hp. to 1/2 hp range, have been used for these applications. The solids-handling sewage pump design passes waste and solids through the pump in full-form without shredding or grinding. With lower pumping heads typically only being 8 to 10 feet (the height of a residential basement), this technology, for years, has provided a reliable cost-effective means to add a bathroom or other fixtures below gravity sewer lines; however, while providing an effective solution, the solidshandling pumps are susceptible to jamming on unwanted debris – such as feminine products, rags or other difficult solids that may get flushed into the system. This is where the ProVore® comes in. It features Liberty’s patented V-Slice® cutter technology utilized in its popular Omnivore® series of 2 hp. grinder pumps.
