Building Our Skills – Making Fenestration A Career of Choice is forging partnerships with regional Government agencies to help give industry employers more up-to-date information about funding for training staff. Since its launch, Building Our Skills campaign has created several platforms in which employers can now get involved to help heighten awareness of the career opportunities available in the Fenestration industry for young people. But, equally as exciting, the campaign is now working closely with several regional-based Government agencies, who offer financial support towards training and upskilling existing employees. Head of Building Our Skills, Stephanie Tague explains, “We know an injection of new and young people are needed to sustain the future of the Fenestration industry and when speaking to our campaign supporters we realised that in some instances employees may not have the skills themselves to be able to assist the injection of new people. “We have started to form partnerships with regionalised Government agencies throughout the UK. These agencies offer a fabulous amount of support working with employers to identify the needs of a business and its training requirements.
They also assist in providing financial commitment towards the training and courses undertaken.” One agency, WYCC – Skills Services (West Yorkshire Consortium of Colleges) has welcomed the Building Our Skills initiative by introducing Fenestration courses to its prospectus. The offering means any installation or fabrication business operating in and around West Yorkshire can tap into the resource. Stephanie continues, “WYCC – Skills Services is a prime example of the partnerships we are engaging with to enhance knowledge, training and help provide a more qualified industry workforce. The organisation can offer opportunities for any size employer in West Yorkshire and some surrounding areas and facilitate over 700 various training courses.”

We looked at the various window and door systems on the market and realised that none of them offer the style, quality and performance that we’d want in our own homes. It was the attention to detail that was missing, so we researched the market for New Build and Renovation – and selected the best products in each sector. And then we set about making them even better. The result is the Genesis Collection, a suite of windows and doors that includes:

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
A SUMMER OF EVENTS AND THE SILLY SEASON FOR JOURNALISTS! Jeeps! It’s summer and sport seems to be at the forefront of everything. We’ve won the cricket World Cup – albeit narrowly! Wimbledon’s come and gone, the Scottish Open Golf is now finished and we’ll be going to press around the time of the Open at Royal Portrush. It’s been exciting and we haven’t even mentioned the Tour de France, British Grand Prix or the World Netball Championships. Our industry, too, seems to be well into sport, and that usually means sport allied to charity. RegaLead has done its bit for GM Fundraising as have the intrepid cyclists who braved the Russian, Scandinavian and Western European roads to raise well in to six figures for the charity. Deceuninck and GBH have again hosted their Golf Day at Bowood Hall and Rocal’s Golf Day in aid of the independent charity, Victim Support, is coming soon. Then there’s Glazerite who’s Golf Day raised over £10K for the mental health charity. Another summer tradition that must be mentioned is Glass Times’ Race Day at Haydock Park. Unfortunately we were unable to attend this year but I’m sure Andy and Mandy Westhead hosted their event in their normal inimitable fashion and a good time will have been had by all. You have to admit, with all these activities, not to mention the genuinely work associated events like Prefix’s launch of their World’s Best Showroom, Everglade’s Conference and the Glazing Summit scheduled for September, there isn’t much to whinge about. OK, we still have the Brexit debacle, problems in the Straits of Hormuz, alleged leaks from our civil service causing embarrassment in the US and the problems associated with the election of a new leader of the Conservative Party and, hence, a new Prime Minister, presumably swiftly followed by a swiftish general election. Phew! And I said we didn’t have much to whinge about! On the other hand a recent survey has found that, on average, we spend 10,000 minutes a year whinging. Nearly one whole week! Apparently, and this may come as a shock, the biggest culprits are not the grumpy old men like myself but the millennials.
www.glassnews.co.uk | August 2019
They say that one in three Brits in their 20s and 30s find something to complain about at least once per day with a typical outburst lasting around 15 minutes. Unbelievably, the moaning is usually about sleep or the lack of it, poor service in restaurants and coffee bars and trouble at work. The whining lasts one and a half times as long as that of the average person and, wait for it, two and a half times as long as that of the most patient group – yes – the over 55s! Do I believe these surveys? No. You can tell it is ‘silly season’ and the papers are desperate to fill the column inches with something - and here am I following suit and repeating this garbage! However, and there may be some truth in this bit: women are said to complain most about money, health and weight, while men sound off about politics and football. Also, women are less happy with men than the other way round with nearly all women finding something irritating about their partners with snoring heading the list. Finishing this hugely important piece of research, surprise, surprise, politics and the weather are our biggest whinge and four in ten people even complain about the amount of complaining by other people. The only good thing to come out of all this is that us old duffers are not the most grumpy of people. Cheers! I’ll have another gin and tonic! One last thing, and on a serious note, I know many of you enjoy our Cold Calling feature that Danny Williams of Pioneer Trading compiles each month. It’s always compelling and amusing reading and this month is no different, except it is on the subject of the move from building conservatories to home extensions. The home extension is growing in popularity but Danny gives pointers and reminders that may prevent an installer taking on more than they can chew. Have a read!

OBITUARY
YOUR LETTERS
LETTERS Dear Editor, One of the final tasks on any window or door installation is to apply a perimeter sealant, where the cost of materials is a matter of a few £’s in comparison to the £000’s charged for the overall installation. So surely, the industry as a whole should be adopting the very best sealants, to ensure the finishing on the installation not only looks good, but is there to perform for the long-term. Our experience and rigorous testing as the UK’s largest independent sealant manufacturer has shown that there is a significant difference in performance between silicones. Shrinkage and discolouration are two obvious issues with inferior silicones and so we believe that the adoption of proven and branded sealants is necessary throughout the industry. There’s also the consideration of the latest, new generation hybrid sealants that offer a number of additional performance credentials. This can be seen with our HY-SPEC® 25, a technological advancement for installers that’s paintable and was so warmly received at the recent FIT Show. As much as the technologies in IGU’s, window and door systems etc have moved on over the years, so to have modern day sealants. Therefore, before you or your fitting teams “gun up” next time, it might be worth considering the quality of silicone used, or you may even wish to embrace the latest hybrids, that can even be applied in damp conditions. Ultimately, we have a duty of care to the consumer that must be upheld and given the modest ticket price of sealants, it’s also a low-cost investment for everyone’s future. Yours sincerely Gary Thomas Commercial Director, Hodgson Sealants

RICHARD BENT
SELECTA SYSTEMS
It is with great sadness that Selecta Systems announce the passing of our Technical Manager Richard Bent. After a short battle with illness, Richard passed away peacefully on Sunday 14th July 2019 with his family at his side. Richard joined Selecta in 2005 as Technical Manager with many years of experience within the industry under his belt. Richard was predominantly office based and built up an excellent rapport with customers and staff with his friendly and approachable personality. His industry and technical knowledge recently enabled Selecta to develop and achieve PAS 24 on patio doors, whilst also being a major part of the team in helping to achieve SBD, PAS 24 and Document Q certification for a range of products. Sales Director Andy Green led the tributes to the popular technical manager. “Richard was a well-liked and popular member of the team and we are deeply shocked and saddened by his sudden passing. We have lost an experienced and valuable member of the team. Our thoughts are with his wife, Ronnie and his family and friends at this sad and difficult time. Richard was part of the ‘family’…” Details of Richards funeral will be announced in due course for those wishing to pay their respects.

SLIDING DOOR HARDWARE
– WE HAVE LIFT OFF, SAYS HOPPE (UK)
Over recent years, large patio doors that allow lots of natural light into the home have become increasingly popular in the UK. The trend for linking the home and garden into one connected living space has fuelled a trend for a wide range of glass doors, from the simple French doors to bi-fold doors and entire, sleek contemporary walls of fully retractable glass. It’s a lovely way to create lots of natural light and a feeling of spaciousness and wellbeing. But although they look great, some of these door systems can be very heavy, difficult to manoeuvre, and in some cases quite dangerous for unwary hands. Thanks to the flush lift and slide door handle from HOPPE (UK), homeowners can now let more light into their home without having to worry about how to operate the door. Lift and slide patio doors allow you to use larger glass panels than other types of door systems but, despite the additional weight, lift and slide door systems are much easier to use than traditional sliding doors. Architectural Ironmongers B J Waller approached HOPPE (UK) looking for
a solution to a non-traditional sliding door installation. “I was asked by our customer to come up with a solution for a pair of pocket lift and slide doors that closed onto a corner post,” said Adrian Bailey, technical sales representative at B J Waller. “Standard lift and slide handles would have collided with each other, but as the HOPPE handle sits flush to the door, it provided the perfect fit and our customer was really pleased with the final design.” By simply turning the lever handle to 180º, the panels lift completely off the track and slide open, quite literally with the push of a finger. The advanced running gears mean that the doors are much easier to move, regardless of the weight. It allows you to move multiple inline panels that weigh up to 440kg each. To return the door to a stationary position, the handle is used again to lower the panel. The wheels are protected from excessive wear, and the panel weight creates a weather-tight seal. Lisa Nightingale, door and window sales manager at HOPPE (UK), says: “Lift and slide door systems are becoming increasingly popular in the UK as they allow us to create much larger openings than with traditional sliding doors. The flush design of the handle complements the smooth, minimalist design, and homeowners feel like they are bringing the outside in without having their view blocked by bulky doors and hardware.” www.hoppe.co.uk

SMART THINKING: EMPLAS LAUNCHES NEW COMPOSITE DOOR OFFER Emplas has unveiled its new composite door range, which features a new leaf and Kubu smart sensor hardware - as standard. The new Emplas composite offer launched at the end of last month [June] is built around a cutting-edge new slab, featuring an industry leading 4mm impact resistant fibreglass skin and a high-density polyurethane foam core, which combine to deliver U-Values of between 0.9 and 1.3 W/ m2K dependent on glazing. It also features a highly innovative Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) subframe, further enhancing strength and security and the TriSYS three-piece dry glaze frame system, which eliminates screw hole plugs and can easily be re-glazed if the glass is damaged. John Leary, Sales and Marketing Director, Emplas said: “Our new composite door range delivers a series of advantages, including improved thermal efficiency and security. The TriSYS system should also make remedial work far simpler as a dryglaze and silicone-free system.
6
“It’s real USP is, however, that we’re supplying it with the Kubu smart locking mechanism as standard. This gives our customers the ability to up-sell to ‘smart’ and build in increased margin into their offer, or simply supply the door ‘as standard’. “Cost neutral it gives them the option and removes barriers to access to the
burgeoning smart home improvement market, if they choose to but without any obligation to do so because there’s no additional cost involved.” Developed in partnership with hardware specialist Avantis, the Kubu lock is upgraded from a standard multi-point locking system to a smart technology
through the optional insertion of a Kubu battery powered module. No wiring or additional work is required. This can then be linked by the end-user to their mobile or tablet, giving them full visibility of the status of their door in real-time through an app. Easy to set up, Kubu also works with other smart devices including Alexa. “Kubu creates another platform but there’s no obligation to sell it because there is no additional cost involved. We launched our new composite first and foremost because the core offer allowed us to deliver more to our customers”, Leary continued. “It’s a better, more thermally efficient, more secure door. Kubu smart sensor technology as standard delivers further flexibility and higher margin opportunities”, he concluded. Bowater by Birtley have received praise from existing customers since the launch of their new online door designer. Split into two applications, the website version allows homeowners to design their own front door in an easy to follow step by step process. They can then upload a picture of their home to visualise their design. In addition to this they can also enter their postcode to find their nearest retailer and installer. The second application allows retailers to produce immediate quotes for their customers, allowing them to provide a seamless efficient service. Many of these leads and quote requests will come from the homeowners using our website door builder, so there really has never been a better time to partner with Bowater by Birtley. Steve Halliwell, Director at Red Deal Windows in Oldham has seen a positive response from his customers and employees, he comments: ‘The Bowater by Birtley Online Door Builder has really helped us, we have it on our own website so the leads we receive direct from the system gives us a firm understanding of the customers’ requirements before we contact them. We are able to transform their vision into a formal quote by adding the technical specification such as cills and sizes etc. on the retailer portal to allow us to offer an accurate quote. Once the customer is happy we are able to submit the order direct to Bowater.’ Gemma Smith, Marketing Manager at Bowater by Birtley is pleased with the feedback, she comments: ‘As a company, we are always looking at ways to streamline our order process so we can remove any barriers when dealing with us. We want to make sure that when a retailer works with
Bowater by Birtley, they can be assured that being ‘easy to do business with’ is at the heart of everything we do. The feedback has been great from those currently using the system; it has allowed our customers to offer quick and accurate quotes to their customers, whereas in the past they would have to wait for it to be processed by our team of estimators. Now they are able to give on the spot prices and close the sale efficiently.” Kevin Kiernan, National Sales Manager is pleased with the response, he adds: “We view these two new systems as a closed sales cycle. Homeowners will design their door on our website and the lead will be passed on to one of our approved retailers, who can then log on and produce a quote quickly and efficiently. In addition to this, they can also use it as an in-house sales tool -the website version can be loaded onto an iPad or similar device in their showroom and used as an interactive POS display.” To enquire about becoming a Bowater by Birtley retailer, please e mail marketing@birtleygroup.co.uk. In fact, he has really brought something to the party, his knowledge of buildings is one thing, but his real passion for making homes great places to live has really shone out and this has added to the view that our customers are truly experts in their field – a huge factor which is helping them to sell more doors.
It is always great when we go to one of our installer’s showroom and see the photos of George with our products and hear how much their customers appreciate it and take confidence from it. We believe our Truedor Partner Programme is something very different to the support

We are three years in now, and the Truedor Partner Programme continues to deliver outstanding results for our customers, the installers who take products from our range, a range which continues to expand through an on-going programme of development. When we launched the programme, we were very clear, we wanted to create a support programme which would help our customers sell more doors. The key for us was to work with each of them individually, to understand their specific needs and to advise them which of the sales and marketing resources in our programme they could benefit from the most. Customers can tap into an outstanding range of marketing materials, and through the Truedor marketing team can access images and photographs of George Clarke who has been the product ambassador for Truedor from the outset and who is well received by consumers looking to buy Composite Doors. Our on-going relationship with George is a real positive – he has real credibility and is someone people believe in; they can trust his sincerity. PREMIUM CABINET SPECIALISTS DESIGNEX BECOMES DIVISION OF CDW SYSTEMS Following a sustained period of growth for both businesses, respected aluminium fabricator, CDW Systems are proud to announce that cabinet specialists and sister company Designex has become a division of CDW. Founded in the early 1990s, Designex has built an enviable reputation across the UK for bespoke glass cabinets, supplying both domestic and commercial customers from private collectors to jewellers, schools and businesses. Their British-made cabinets have even attracted celebrity customers including Gordon Ramsay, Sir James Dyson and Real Madrid and Wales International footballer Gareth Bale. Now, after a positive start to 2019, and sales up 65% on the previous year, Designex joins CDW Systems – a fellow member of the £10 million East Manor Group and a company which is also celebrating a strong first half of the year. The aim is to use the CDW platform, along with their shared expertise and success to elevate the Designex brand. Angela Phillips, Finance Director of CDW Systems comments: “Since East Manor Group acquired Designex in 2016, the company has continued to grow from strength to strength, supplying world-class cabinets to customers across the country. “This move is designed to give Designex the space to continue their upward trajectory
and meet rising demand. It also allows them to use the CDW platform to really raise their profile and promote their British-made product range to a new audience. With a shared expertise in aluminium and glass, and a shared commitment to delivering exceptional quality, it’s a fantastic fit for us at CDW.” Tim Farr, who serves as Joint Manager of Designex with Sam Wickham adds: “This is great news for Designex as it ensures we are in the best possible position to drive the business forward. At such a pivotal time for the business with orders increasing month on month, the support of CDW Systems will prove invaluable.
PANORAMIC GROUP LAUNCHES REVOLUTIONARY
NEW FLOATING INTEGRAL BLIND SYSTEM
Panoramic Group has launched its new Floating Integral Blind system, a highly innovative new product that allows users to manoeuvre the blinds from both the top and the bottom of the unit, providing a much more precise level of adjustment than any other offering on the market, at a much lower price point and with superfast lead times.
“We are incredibly fortunate to be part of a group which understands the unique proposition we offer to customers. Not only are our British-made cabinets bespoke, our experience and expertise means we can meet design and technical specifications that other manufacturers simply cannot. We look forward to this next chapter for Designex and anticipate further success in this new, exciting partnership with CDW Systems.”
Unique to the Panoramic Group, the new manually operated floating integral blinds may well be a more cost-effective option than other integral blind systems on the market, but that is not at the expense of quality. In fact, Panoramic is producing them with warm edge spacer and Planitherm 4S Glass, which combines market leading solar control and thermal insulating properties to reflect 56% of unwanted heat in summer months and ensure 63% less heat loss compared to ordinary double glazing.
Founded in 1992, CDW Systems has firmly established itself as one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of high-quality glazing products. Supplying both trade and commercial installation companies across the UK, CDW manufactures windows, doors, shop front systems and curtain walling from leading systems houses including Hydro (previously Sapa), Reynaers, Aluk and Smart Systems.
Available initially in white or grey but with more colours to be introduced as the product develops, all units will be manufactured in the Group’s Northampton based glass processing facility, Pano Glass, alongside the company’s new state-of-the art ‘switchable’ offering, on a rapid 10-day lead time from point of order to delivery. Panoramic Group will be taking orders from mid-July 2019.
For more information call CDW Systems on 01452 414853 or visit www.cdwsystems.co.uk.
Panoramic Group chairman, Alan Rees, commented: “Our customers love integral blinds, but we know they are less enthusiastic when it comes to how much they cost and how long they take to produce, plus they also dislike the plastic around the side and the top which can interrupt the view.

“So, we listened to these comments, and now, after many months of development, we have a product that addresses all three points,” Alan continued. “Up until recently, the only Venetian or pleated blinds available on the UK market were operated from the top down – with our Floating Blinds, you can control from both the top and bottom of the unit, enabling you to position them precisely as you want them, to allow natural light in, but block off direct sunlight.” Panoramic Group integral Floating Blinds will be bespoke and made to order, ranging in size from 150mm x 250mm to 1,000mm x 1,950mm with larger options becoming available in the coming months. GLAZERITE GROWS FLEET TO GO FURTHER THAN EVER The Glazerite UK Group Ltd has made a £150,000 investment into the expansion of its delivery vehicle fleet, with the addition of two new 18-tonne, custom built lorries. The move will further strengthen the VEKA fabricator’s ability to deliver to customers on time, in full, all over the UK. Ian Lloyd, Glazerite’s Operations Director, explains the reasons behind the investment. He says: “The new lorries complement our existing 16-strong fleet of 7.5 tonne delivery vehicles, and will allow us to improve on our distance and overnight capabilities. Being able to fulfil our order book and deliver to customers on time is integral to our offering as a leading fabricator.” Following the investment, Glazerite has improved its carrying capacity for particular
12
delivery routes, including Scotland and the South West. Ian says: “Deliveries from Glazerite North West to Scotland, and from Glazerite’s HQ in the Midlands to Cornwall, South Wales and the Isle of Wight involve overnight stays. These routes are growing in volume and often we have to send two trucks. This investment allows us to cater for that growth and complete these deliveries utilising one larger vehicle.” Two dedicated drivers have been employed by Glazerite at its sites in Wellingborough and Bolton - where the vehicles are based - and both have already begun making deliveries to installers. Glazerite’s fleet has undergone a largescale rebrand in the last 18 months following the fabricator’s transition from Glazerite
Windows Ltd to The Glazerite UK Group, and the rebrand of Network VEKA to Independent Network. Michelle Wright, Group Marketing Manager, explains what a key part the vehicle livery plays in Glazerite’s profile. She says: “Our vehicle livery approach has been to focus on retail rather than trade following the recent rebrand. The fleet covers tens of thousands of miles across the UK every week, making it one of our most valuable and visible brand carriers. We hope that by aligning with our retail brand, the refreshed livery and new lorries will inspire homeowners to invest in high quality windows and doors, which will ultimately benefit our installers.” www.glazerite.co.uk

TRADITIONAL MARKETING STILL HAS A PLACE IN THE DIGITAL WORLD Digital marketing might be at the forefront of most B2B and B2C marketing budgets these days, but traditional channels like printed brochures, radio advertising and direct mail still have their place. Scientists in Canada and the UK have published studies revealing traditional marketing activity such as direct mail is actually better for brand recall, and feels more ‘real’ for consumers as they can see and touch it. A marketing brochure is a tangible way for a customer to explore your products and services at their own pace. Seeing your logo out and about, whether that’s on a company van or in the form of local sponsorship brings your brand to life for those who might not have otherwise come across your company. Other solid ways to target your local community includes radio advertising, dropcards or flyers through letterboxes (especially in areas around your latest install), and even a branded A-board on the site of your current project. However, unless you’re out and about meeting customers at local events or exhibitions, traditional marketing methods won’t give you the opportunity to engage with customers in the same way digital media can. That’s why, when combined properly, traditional marketing and a digital approach can work wonders for installers. Fabricators like the Glazerite UK Group Ltd are geared up to help installers in a range of business areas, including marketing. Group Marketing Manager, Michelle Wright, explains how: “We work with our installer partners to match their online presence with their offline activity. A simple but effective way to do this is to use a consistent brand logo and key messages across all
14
platforms, so customers know who you are and what you offer. “We help our customers develop strong branding which can then be used across all communications. Every customer touchpoint should carry your logo and brand elements, including brochures, flyers, quotations, invoices, building signage, showrooms and vehicles, as well as your social media and your website. We also help our customers to develop a business identify beyond the logo, whether that’s creating messaging and a tone of voice in line with their values, or helping with images, graphics and video, which can put them on a par with national competitors.” Michelle believes traditional and digital marketing can work in harmony. “We
“We know that consumers like the accessibility and instant nature of the internet and social media, but we also know investing in windows and doors is a huge decision. Printed material can be kept safe by a potential customer who can then browse and revisit the products on offer in their own time. know that consumers like the accessibility and instant nature of the internet and social media, but we also know investing in windows and doors is a huge decision. Printed material can be kept safe by a potential customer who can then browse and revisit the products on offer in their own time. Consumers still also place a lot more trust in a printed brochure than a web page.” Supporting installers in business areas they might not otherwise have the time, budget or resource for is a key Glazerite offering. “Our customers want to concentrate on what they do best – high quality installations. We aim to take the pressure off by giving them access to marketing support, which will build their profile and brand, and put them on a level playing field with the nationals.” Glazerite is currently expanding its marketing team so it can continue to flex its support offering around its customers. In recent months the fabricator has finalised a full suite of retail brochures highlighting the range of windows, doors and heritage products available. Michelle adds: “The Heritage Range brochure also includes a complete sales support pack if required so our installer partners have a range of ways to showcase the products to customers. The marketing material includes dropcards, banner stands and posters as well as counter display units, which can even be tailored with the installer’s own branding and company details, just for the price of the print run.”

BUILDERS MERCHANT BUILDING INDEX
MERCHANTS’ SALES UP 6% IN MAY
COMPARED TO APRIL 2019 - BUT FLAT YEAR ON YEAR YEAR ON YEAR Total Builders Merchants value sales in May 2019 were flat (+0.0%) compared with the same period in 2018. Following strong growth in the period February to April, sales were somewhat disappointing in May – in particular for Landscaping, which had seen three months of doubledigit growth, but a sales increase of only 0.4% in May compared to last year. Both
Timber & Joinery Products (+0.9%) and Heavy Building Materials (+0.3%) saw sales increase only marginally. The strongest category was Workwear & Safetywear, in which sales had increased by 4.2%. Many sectors, including Tools (-5.4%), Decorating (-1.9%), Plumbing, Heating & Electrical (-2.0%) and Kitchens & Bathrooms (-2.3%) reported lower sales in May 2019 compared to last year.
This more subdued performance was echoed in ONS construction output figures, and consumer confidence remains low. Total output in May 2019 had grown compared with last year, but RMI output was down by 1.8%, and the most significant drop was seen in private housing RMI (-6.8%) in the month.
MONTH ON MONTH Total Builders Merchants sales were up 6.0% compared with the previous month. Sectors that performed well on a month-by-month unadjusted basis included Landscaping (up 10.7%), Heavy Building Materials (up 6.7%), Tools (up 5.0%) and Decorating (up 4.9%). However, the adjusted May 2019 figures, which take into account the trading day difference, show that on a like for like basis, Total Builders Merchants’ sales in May were just 1% higher than April and all categories

A conversion of a Victorian warehouse into residential accommodation has used Spectus Elite 70 doorsets to stunning effect.
Ben Vowles, Operations Manager at Titan, takes up the story. “The project needed exceptional attention to detail to deliver a high quality finish. The position of the mullions was key in ensuring the sightlines were intact with the first floor frames and also gave internal clearance for the stairs.” To ensure the project was completed to the standard required, Titan worked closely with the installer, Leicestershire’s The Right Window Company. The support of the Epwin Window Systems technical team was also drawn upon. Ben says: “Conversations with the Epwin Window Systems technical team helped us develop the right solution. We used the structural mullion profiles not only between the shaped frames and doorset frames but

RENOLIT EXOFOL PFX Super-Matt launches with four different oak decors
NEW RENOLIT EXOFOL PFX SUPER-MATT Worms, May 22, 2019 – Matt surfaces are in vogue, and not just in interior design or the automotive sector. There is also widespread demand around the house for surfaces that are pleasant to the touch - the attractive, the more fashionable. With its new finish for exterior films, RENOLIT is now raising the bar for window profiles, door panels and facades. The surface specialists from Worms have combined the deep, dynamic wood texture VLF with a transparent PVDF layer, creating an extremely natural look. "This texture is practically indistinguishable from real wood, neither visually nor in terms of touch," says Product Manager Franz Josef Weber. RENOLIT EXOFOL PFX Super-Matt is the name of the new film which is based on the unplasticised PVC film RENOLIT EXOFOL PX and combined with the PVDF top coat already well known from the premium product RENOLIT EXOFOL FX. This fluoric plastic behaves similarly to a Teflon coating on frying pans. It improves surface protection and increases the film's resistance to dirt and chemicals, and even graffiti can be easily removed. "Its low surface tension makes the film dirtrepellent and easy to clean. Even on this very smooth surface, dust and dirt particles will not stick to the film," says business unit manager Stefan Friedrich, describing the low maintenance of the new development. Water, soap or detergent as well as a soft brush or sponge are sufficient for cleaning.
18
SURFACE EMPHASIZES WOOD CHARACTER RENOLIT EXOFOL PFX Super-Matt launches with four oak decors in different colours: Honey Oak, Ginger Oak, Pepper Oak and Weissbach Eiche, whose authentic designs are particularly well suited to the strikingly different woodgrain surface finish. With a subtle sheen emanating from the emboss valleys, the surface resembles a natural, matt finished oak. As with all RENOLIT EXOFOL films, Solar Shield Technology (SST) is an integral part of the construction. IR-reflecting colour pigments reduce the temperature differences between the outer and inner profile surfaces. In this way, the profiles retain their shape and windows and doors retain their exact fit. For easier processing, RENOLIT EXOFOL PFX also has a primer on its reverse side. The warranty periods for the new film are the same as for the proven RENOLIT EXOFOL PX film. www.renolit.com

EDGETECH ORDERS EASIER THAN EVER THANKS TO NEW E-COMMERCE SYSTEM An intuitive new online ordering system is set to make it easier than ever to buy from Edgetech. Unveiled for the first time at May’s FIT Show, the platform allows IGU manufacturers to quickly and simply pick a product, input quantities, finalise an order and arrange deliveries with the click of a mouse. The system will even remember a user’s last purchases, making repeat orders a breeze. At the FIT Show, key Edgetech customers and others from across the industry were
able to try it out, and feedback was very positive, as Managing Director Chris Alderson explains: “At Edgetech, we’ve always striven to put our customers at the centre of everything we do. We want to offer the best products, backed with the best service, and to make it all as easy as possible for our customers to access. “The new e-commerce system is designed to help us achieve the third of those objectives – making it simpler than ever for busy IGU manufacturers to place orders, and ensuring we have all the information we need to offer them a fantastic level of service. “A huge amount of effort has gone on behind the scenes to bring e-commerce online, and I want to thank everyone here at Edgetech who’s worked on the project. “But that work would count for nothing if our customers didn’t find the finished system easy to use. Thankfully, we had some very encouraging feedback from the people who trialled it on our stand at the FIT Show, and we’re hoping that many now go on to use it on a regular basis!” For more information please visit: www.edgetechig.co.uk. ALUFAST EXPAND
WITH EXLABESA BUILDING SYSTEMS There is no better endorsement of a product’s quality than if you’re willing to use it in your own projects. Yorkshire’s ALUFAST has been working with Exlabesa Building Products for over two years. When the time came to upgrade and expand their own premises, the team had no hesitation in specifying Exlabesa curtain walling for the project. James of ALUFAST said: “Exlabesa’s products really sell well. The quality and the price are at the right level for the market and we have attracted regular aluminium contracts as a result. The range of Exlabesa products are also easy to manufacture and install, just as the marketing material promotes.” ALUFAST designs manufactures and installs aluminium window, door and
curtain walling and PVC-U systems. Its management team has over 30 years’ experience in window specification for commercial new build and refurbishment and works on small and large scale projects. The team focuses on adding value and ensuring they contribute to a high quality end result. They work closely with clients at every stage, including offering input when they think there is scope for improving the design or performance or lowering the unit cost. As a result, it has a reputation for excellence that makes the difference. It’s an approach that is working – ALUFAST has just increased its Leeds manufacturing premises to 12,000 sq ft. It has also opened a second 6,000 sq ft premises in Huddersfield to help keep pace with demand. James concluded: We’re delighted with the new manufacturing premises. Jason Scrivens, area sales manager for KÖMMERLING commented: ‘The club has had a difficult few years and so my task is to help rebuild the club, recruit players and to build for the future. MADNESS TOPS THE BILL AT GLAZERITE’S ANNUAL RACE NIGHT Leading VEKA fabricator, the Glazerite UK Group Ltd, hosted their annual charity Race Night on Friday 21st June, held for the first time at the prestigious Newmarket Racecourse. Customers and suppliers from around the UK joined employees from Glazerite for an afternoon of racing, followed by dinner and evening entertainment courtesy of legendary ska band, Madness. Glazerite’s guests raised over £1300 for the charity We Mind & Kelly Matters, which was founded this year by Glazerite Chairman, John Hewitt, in memory of his late daughter, Kelly. Jason Thompson, Group Managing Director for Glazerite says: “It was a terrific night with a few lucky winners amongst our customers and suppliers. The biggest winner on the night though was the charity, We Mind & Kelly Matters, which John set up to help break down the stigma around mental health. “We were delighted to have been joined on what was a very enjoyable evening by so many of our customers and suppliers. We’re very grateful to them all to have raised so much for the charity. We also had a superb gesture from Paul Sullivan from Anglo European Ltd who has agreed to support the charity throughout 2019.” Joining Glazerite on the night was Richard Flint, from Mansfield-based Midland Dual Glaze, who says of the event: “It was a great night from start to finish, and we were really well looked after. We really enjoyed getting together with others from the industry, and we were especially delighted to be able to donate £200 to We Mind & Kelly Matters on behalf of Midland Dual Glaze.”

Sheila Rett, from Glazerite installer CJR Double Glazing, travelled from Southampton for the event. She says: “We had a really good night and Madness were amazing to see. It was also great to catch up with the team from Glazerite and raise money for such an important cause at the same time.” Travelling all the way down from Penrith, Andrew Richardson from Andrew Richardson Joinery, says: “The Glazerite Raceday is always one we make sure we can attend as it’s a great night. This year the venue was a little further away, but definitely worth the journey - we thoroughly enjoyed it. Another highlight of the night for Glazerite’s Operations Director, Ian Lloyd, was bumping into former jockey and 1981 Grand national winner, Bob Champion. Ian says: “Our annual race night is something I always look forward to as it’s a great way for us to thank our customers for their loyalty. FENSA HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANCE OF COMPLIANCE AND FENSA CERTIFICATE TO HOMEOWNERS Competent Person Scheme FENSA has produced a suite of videos aimed at helping homeowners make the right choice when it comes to installing replacement windows and doors. The series, which will be shown across multiple channels, supports a hugely successful ongoing TV campaign during which the organisation raised their profile further by sponsoring ‘Weekends on Dave’, a channel popular among ABC1 (higher social and economic groups) men aged 16-34. FENSA will now look to capitalise further on its recognition among homeowners by raising consumer awareness of the FENSA certificate, and the importance of choosing a FENSA Approved Installer to carry out work. The creative minds behind the original campaign - which featured a pencil drawn animation of a friendly FENSA Approved Installer going about his work - have blended a mix of advice and information, including ‘How to Find an Installer You Can Trust’, ‘Why Choose a FENSA Approved Installer’ and ‘Five Essential Questions to Ask Your Installer’. The videos encourage homeowners to ask questions like, ‘Will my installation be energy efficient?’ It is vital that consumers understand that energy ratings such as the BFRC rainbow labels are useful tools for
comparing the energy efficiency of windows and doors, especially in the context of improving carbon emissions and saving money on energy bills. They also expand on regulatory requirements and consumer protections available when replacing windows and doors. Although hundreds of thousands of FENSA certificates are issued per year, many potential FENSA customers may still be unaware of the importance of compliance with building regulations, or the fact that work carried out by FENSA Approved Installers is covered by an insurance backed guarantee. Or that the local council is automatically notified after work has taken place – saving them the time and cost of having to do this themselves. Chris Beedel, FENSA Director of Membership, says: “There’s so much more to installing windows and doors than most people realise. A referral from a friend or a reassuring website isn’t enough. Homeowners need to ask the right questions before appointing an installer to protect themselves – physically, legally, and financially.” “Ultimately however,” says Chris, “there’s only one question homeowners need to ask: ‘Will I get a FENSA certificate afterwards?’ as this is all the proof they will need that the installation company’s work will be compliant, energy efficient and accompanied by an insurance backed guarantee.” READER ENQUIRY NO: 0819/0039

BOWEN JOINERY AND GLAZERITE TRANSFORM SHEFFIELD BUILDING An iconic building in the centre of Sheffield has undergone a makeover thanks to Bowen Joinery Ltd and The Glazerite UK Group Ltd. Exchange Place Studios, in the city’s conservation area, is a stunning Art Deco building and as such planners had to approve the installation before it could commence. Home to 60 studio spaces over six floors, the building is residence to over 80 artists and has been regenerated as part of plans to improve the Castlegate area of the city. Local firm, Bowen Joinery Ltd, was appointed to take on the renovation, which took six months and was completed in late 2018. Run by founder, Mark Bowen, the company worked with VEKA fabricator Glazerite who supplied the profile system used in the build. Mark Bowen says: “We used the VEKA M70 profile system of Tilt and Turn windows in Flat Grey, with integrated MACO concealed gearing and Fab&Fix handles. In total, we installed 221 windows, some of which had specially shaped topped frames.”
However, the installation wasn’t without its challenges and was actually delayed for two years due to the discovery of asbestos during a routine survey. With no budget to remove it, the existing panels had to be carefully encapsulated by new panels during the transformation. Mark explains: “We had to carry out work to encapsulate the panels below which were asbestos board, then fit the windows ensuring we didn’t go anywhere near the asbestos. This meant adapting the screen walling system from VEKA so we could still use the capping, but on a timber frame behind.” Pete Smith, Sales Manager for Glazerite, adds: “We worked with Mark and his team to provide the products in smooth grey Renolit foil to give an appearance that was in keeping with the original. This was of paramount importance for the installation. “The windows are now more thermally efficient and user-friendly, with the end result a stunning, well-lit and better environment for the artists to work in.”

19 MILLION BRITONS WATCH FENSA TV ADS SO FAR FENSA, the largest government-authorised Building Regulation compliance scheme for the installation of replacement windows and doors in England and Wales, has released statistics on the performance of its firstever TV campaign which began broadcasting in March this year. According to analysis of the TV campaign so far more than one third of all Britons in the catchment area for the adverts, almost 19 million people, have seen the advert, with each person seeing the ad an average of three times. And by the end of the campaign, which continues until December 2019, the ads – which advise homeowners on the importance of using FENSA Approved Installers and obtaining a FENSA certificate for their replacement windows and doors - will have been seen more than 190 million times. The concurrent online advertising campaign has also received an excellent response, receiving 6 million impressions, the number of times an advertisement is viewed once by a visitor or displayed once on a web page. In the meantime social media posts have enjoyed 2.5 million
impressions, with video posts having been viewed more than 200,000 times. Further analysis has confirmed that the TV commercials have been highly successful in driving homeowners to find out more about FENSA and its advantages: from January this year there have been more than 675,000 ’Find a FENSA Approved Installer’ searches through the website, together with 412,000 searches about FENSA certificates. Chris Beedel, FENSA Director of Membership, says the campaign is fulfilling its objectives: “We’re seeing record numbers of homeowner enquiries on the FENSA website which is exactly what we had hoped for. Additionally, the demand to work with FENSA Approved Installers from consumers is increasing by the day. The huge number of installer searches we’re seeing on the website confirms homeowners understand the value of a FENSA certificate and the competency of FENSA Approved Installers.” Anda Gregory, Managing Director of GGF Commercial Group, within which FENSA operates,
says: “With consumer awareness at an all-time high of what being a FENSA Approved Installer means, we’re confident these figures will increase across the rest of the year. The value of being a FENSA Approved Installer to any company is now clearer than ever, with our brand reputation and website driving business towards the FENSA community. It’s fantastic too that our FENSA Approved Installers are seeing the tangible impact of the campaign. We know there could be a lot more certainty in the current trading environment, yet one thing every FENSA Approved Installer can be sure of is that we will continue to support their business and promote their services to homeowners around the UK.” More than 13.5 million certificates have been issued since FENSA was launched in 2002, which is greater than half the number of houses in England and Wales. FENSA Approved Installers install over 2.2 million windows and 350,000 doors per year. READER ENQUIRY NO: 0819/0042

We introduced the Timberweld welded sash to help meet this demand. We get the beauty and style of the mechanical joint with the strength of welding.” “As Justin highlights, the flush sash market is gaining great momentum,” comments Alan Burgess, one of the innovators behind Timberweld (pictured with Justin at the recent VEKA France golf day). “If you want to serve this market at scale, you need to be able to weld a strong, authentic butt-joint quickly and cost-efficiently. Membership to the GGF opens up easy access to a number of benefits, including technical support, regulatory advice, networking and alignment with some of the most powerful industry brands. Jason Thompson, Group Managing Director of Glazerite, says of the move: “The GGF is committed to driving standards in the glass and glazing sector, as well as promoting best practice at all times. That’s what we aspire to as a fabricator; for our customers and the homeowner. With their restructure and expansion plans announced at the start of this year, it’s clear the GGF and its
associated companies have already become a lot more proactive, particularly on the consumer-facing side.” He adds: “Membership to the GGF will give us access to their conciliation scheme, regional meetings and the opportunity to network with like-minded organisations, which helps us all. We’ll also be kept up to date with the latest industry guidance, which we can pass onto our installer partners, including upcoming legislation changes and technical support. such as fire safety and improving energy efficiency in buildings as well as looking for ways to tackle the increasing problems around skilled labour shortages and training for the industry.
As part of the GGF’s Fire Safety campaign, Adrian Blaydon, GGF Technical Officer presented on “The Importance of Fire Resistant Glazing” at the All Party Parliamentary Group for Fire Safety in the House of Commons on 9th July. On his presentation Adrian commented, “It was a great opportunity to present the case for Fire Resistant Glazing to a meeting of such passionate advocates of fire safety. It was also extremely encouraging that despite the events currently occurring within parliament, that MPs had certainly not lost focus on this life safety – and potentially life-threatening – issue.” Also this month, the GGF has attended meetings with political partners

BM ALUMINIUM CUSTOMER NUMBERS CONTINUE TO RISE BM Aluminium has seen an impressive 8% rise in customer numbers since the start of 2019 as the aluminium sector continues to defy sluggish market conditions. The exclusive UK distributor of the LogiKal software system says that the increase is coming from both new and established businesses, and reflects the ongoing growth happening right across the board in aluminium. Managing Director Dean Hodges has analysed the figures: “These new customers are in retail, trade and commercial markets and range from start-ups to big, familiar names. What they have in common is a desire to future proof their businesses by choosing a software solution which they know can accommodate even the most ambitious potential growth.
26
“The biggest shift we are seeing is in companies choosing LogiKal as an alternative to the proprietary software provided by their aluminium systems company. This is because LogiKal gives them the freedom they want to be able to switch effortlessly between systems as they diversify and take on other new products. “With so many exciting new innovations coming to the market in aluminium, fabricators are telling us that they want to be able to put together their own product ranges without it impacting on their efficiency or service levels and LogiKal obviously enables them to do exactly that.” Another key driver for many of these new BM Aluminium customers is the continuing market investment taking place in machinery. With no let up in the number
of CNC machines being ordered, LogiKal continues to be the first choice software for providing all of the relevant machine links. BM Aluminium is also currently benefiting from the number of new systems houses entering the UK market who are making their databases available to new customers within LogiKal. This includes Cortizo, who have just joined the long list of systems companies who BM Aluminium works with to create and support their products in databases. Dean Hodges adds: “With such a large volume of new customers coming on board with us this year, we’ve focused on making the software installation experience as efficient as possible for us and for our customers. We’re carrying out more remote software installs than ever before and we’ve
also created accessible and user-friendly training programmes so that new customers can be up and running quickly and easily.” Tel: 01684 856920 www.bmaluminium.co.uk READER ENQUIRY NO: 0819/0047

GLAZERITE GOLF DAY RAISES OVER £10,000 FOR MENTAL HEALTH CHARITY Now in its 14th year, the sun shone once again for the Glazerite UK Group’s annual Pro-Am Golf Day. Held on Friday 5th July in the tranquil surroundings of Wellingborough Golf Club, the event was attended by a number of the VEKA fabricator’s customers, suppliers and employees, who travelled from across the UK to take part. In total, over £10,000 was raised for the charity We Mind & Kelly Matters, which was set up by Glazerite Chairman John Hewitt in memory of his late daughter. The day teed off just after 9am with the golfers playing right through to late afternoon. 29 Glazerite teams took part in the event - of which seven placed in the top 10 - and D & M Windows & Doors’ Chris Hoolickin won the coveted ‘Nearest the Pin’ at the 18th hole. Tucker Glass & Glazing took second place alongside golf professional, Mark Sparrow. Danny Tucker says: “This is the second golf day we’ve attended and it’s a very special event. It gives us the chance to catch up with
the team from Glazerite, as well as raise money for a fantastic cause and have fun at the same time.” Following the golf, the players’ partners and colleagues joined in for the evening event, during which John Hewitt gave a presentation about We Mind & Kelly Matters, and thanked all those who attended for their support and generosity. Pete Mew of Mews Windows led the auction, with lots including a motorbike experience at Donington Park, a round of golf for two at The Belfry and a twoweek holiday home rental in Spain. Glazerite’s Group Managing Director, Jason Thompson, even bid £500 in exchange for one of Pete’s legendary suits. Glazerite’s Sales & Marketing Director, Jeff Dunn, says: “The Glazerite Golf Day is always a highlight of the industry’s social calendar. It was great to be a part of it on my first working day at Glazerite last year and this year was just as enjoyable. Thanks to all of those who joined us; the feedback has been fantastic. We’ve already had a number
of people expressing their interest for the 15th Pro-Am trophy next year.” John Hewitt adds: “We owe a massive thank you to the PGA and Wellingborough Golf Club for their support and involvement in organising the day. You don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy the event, as the evening reception is as much a part of it as the golf, with an auction, great food, and live music.

VEKA RECYCLING’S TIMELY NEW WEBSITE AS PLANT BUILD CONTINUES VEKA Recycling Ltd has launched a fresh new website that is in keeping with the continuing construction of what will be Europe’s most advanced PVC-U window and door recycling facility. Using fresh photography and graphics the website describes VEKA Recycling’s role in the reprocessing of virgin offcuts and post-consumer and industrial end-of-life windows and doors and how the company is highly adept at working with fabricators and installers to turn waste products into new. Crucially, through the website VEKA Recycling emphasises just how simple the company makes it for old frames to be recycled, for the increasingly important benefits to the environment of course, but actually as a sound business proposition too.
In keeping with the increased importance of websites as the first impression that new customers may have of a company, a great deal of emphasis has been placed on making the new site easy to navigate and, actually, stimulating to use. Facts about the company including its development in the UK and also Germany – VEKA was the first in Europe to create such a facility in 1993 – are displayed in a style that takes the user seamlessly from one page to the next. VEKA Recycling’s Wellingborough plant is scheduled to become fully operational from early 2020. Whilst the plant currently recycles material from over 90,000 windows each month, further stages are being added that will enable the full processing and separation of rubber, metals and other impurities from PVC-U, entirely on site.
VEKA Recycling’s Managing Director Simon Scholes says that the new website has a key role to play in the company’s vision for the sustainable use of PVC-U as a framing material: “The founder of VEKA, Heinrich Laumann, used his vision and determination to create the first plant dedicated to the recycling of PVC-U and associated materials in Behringen, Germany in 1993. Our new plant being built at Wellingborough extends that vision and the website not only brings to life VEKA Recycling’s philosophy, but also the practicalities of how we work with fabricators and installers to make the most of PVC-U as a sustainable resource.” To access the new website go to: http://veka-recycling.co.uk

UAP REORGANISES AS A CO-OPERATIVE
FROM 1994 TO 2019,
CELEBRATED BY ELITE WINDOWS
Not only does the year 1994, reflect one in which both Yahoo and Amazon were founded, but on a smaller scale, Elite Windows (Burton) Limited was established and today is a loyal KÖMMERLING fabricator. As one of a handful of businesses in the industry that has continually traded for 25 years, the company is now run by one of the original founders, Paul Burgess, along with David Yates who joined as coowner back in 2001. There are also ten permanent employees who have all been in the business for fifteen years or more. Elite Windows are a regional fabricator and the one closest to KÖMMERLING’s facility in Fradley, with a dedicated trade counter and delivery service, along with a highly successful retail business with two fitting teams. They cleverly present their business which occupies three business units at the Trent Industrial Estate, Burton-Upon-Trent occupying the showroom, a trade counter and the manufacturing unit. It's also a business that’s been built upon personal service through Paul and David where product quality is of utmost importance, hence the reason they specify KÖMMERLING as their profile partner. It’s also a business where new enquiries have been generated

Paul Burgess and David Yates, co-directors of Elite Windows (Burton) commented: ’25 years really is a milestone for us and we have to thank our cherished customers for their continual support. For us it’s all about service and about outstanding product quality which is greatly helped by KÖMMERLING as our profile partner.’ Brian McDonald, sales director of KÖMMERLING concluded: ‘Congratulations to Elite Windows for their 25-year anniversary. It just shows that a true commitment to customers can help build loyalty for the long-term and here’s to another 25!’ For further information on Elite Windows please visit www.elitewindowsburton.co.uk. UAP is pleased to announce that is now a co-operative, with every single employee owning a share of the business and benefiting from its future success. The board of directors has allocated a significant amount of UAP shares for employees. 20% of the share fund has been split between employees with the number of shares dependent on service, position in the company etc. Shares are earned and cannot be purchased. David Jennings, CEO, UAP says, “Personally, I think this is the most powerful message that UAP has ever released. Myself and the directors of UAP are incredibly proud
to have set this scheme up and it is humbling to hear comments from our employees; several have said that they’re ‘honoured’ to own a share of UAP.” “Those who work hard and make a difference will be offered a higher number of shares. We think it’s right that those employees who contribute the most to the success of the company receive a greater reward. This isn’t about how much money anyone has. This is about everyone having the same chance to earn more shares.” On 30th April each year, more shares from the D share fund will be allocated to UAP staff members. Following the reorganisation, the UAP
board believes that the benefits will be felt right across the supply chain. “If you are a customer, how can you fail not to be impressed that everybody is genuinely working to the same goal,” continues David. “At all levels, no matter who you are, you must gain confidence knowing that you are dealing with a company that cares about its staff, wants its staff to succeed and who go that extra mile to ensure that service is second to none. Every stakeholder in UAP should be interested in this development.” Tel: 0161 796 7268 www.uapcorporate.com READER ENQUIRY NO: 0819/0055

PREFIX SYSTEMS, THE HOME IMPROVEMENT EXPERTS NOW HAVE AN OFFSITE BUILDING SOLUTION, TOO Attending the opening of Prefix Systems’ ‘Greatest Showroom’, Glass News’ Editor, Chris Champion, had the opportunity to see their wide range of products and their new WARMwall, WARMroof and WARMglass offsite building solutions. Attending Prefix Systems’ launch of their ‘Greatest Showroom’ at their base in Blackburn, I was ready to be slightly dismissive of the claim they were making. After all, it’s pretty bold to term anything you do as the ‘greatest’! Was the claim misplaced? No. it wasn’t. This new showroom is very large, beautifully laid out, complete with a presentation/boardroom, and showing the Prefix products off to perfection. It doesn’t just concentrate on the high ticket items but shows off the full range on offer – and it’s an impressive offering. Before visiting Prefix Systems I wasn’t sure what they were. A manufacturer? A reseller? A fabricator? Now I wouldn’t describe them as any of those things alone. They are really Home Improvement Experts, and that is how they see themselves. They have been suppliers to the home improvement market for over 20 years and have continually developed new products such that the portfolio is now looking pretty complete. It’s also interesting that the products match the current demands of the buying public – solid roofs, home extensions and aluminium windows and doors including sliders and bifolds. They have also addressed the thermal value issues with insulated products to the fore. Their WARMroof product is a case in point. It’s a system that is perfect for conservatory replacement projects as well as new build sunrooms, garden rooms and extensions, due to its innovative and flexible design. Prefix describe it as the most configurable and structurally robust solid, insulated and tiled roof in the UK market and it’s the first off-site constructed ‘warm roof ’ of its kind in the sector that has been designed and engineered from scratch. This has ensured that it is the most innovative, desirable, aesthetically pleasing and advanced roof system available for home extensions and conservatory renovation projects. Where this new showroom shines is in its ability to showcase the construction of the various products. The variety of cutaway products clearly shows the design and engineering credentials of the products
36

and it also allows the construction and use of thermal materials to be clearly shown. Obviously, the showroom will be of benefit to the installer customer but equally so for the homeowner. The opportunity to see products up close and personal is invaluable but I’m guessing the burning question is how far will people travel to view a showroom? If it’s a high ticket item, and one that you will live with for many years, then being prepared to travel up to 100 miles would seem to be a no brainer. So what about potential customers outside that range? Prefix has a simple answer and that is to replicate this showroom at their other three manufacturing sites in
Ancillary items and a large selection of colour options
Northamptonshire, Swansea and Sussex – and that gives pretty good coverage for mainland UK. How soon that will be is another question and we shall have to wait and see – building high end showrooms is not cheap or easy to achieve. Where Prefix Systems shine is in their product choices. They will design, engineer, test and manufacture their own products but will also select products that match their own high standards and resell them. That is an attitude that must be admired. Rather than trying to ‘reinvent the wheel’ they choose best of breed products and accept that they are just that, and act as a middle-man to sell them on. This gives them a range of products and allows them to concentrate their efforts on product development in specific areas rather than trying to copy products themselves. They, therefore, resell a variety of products including aluminium bifolds and sliders, a range of aluminium windows, all under the Opal or OPAL brand. The windows include casement, flush, heritage and tilt and turn then there are entrance doors, too. Prefix work closely with Ultraframe and offer their range of glazed roofs which are all available in a variety of colour finishes and styles with glass options including the very latest in solar control roof glass. A conservatory remains a popular choice for many homeowners looking to extend their living space with a light, bright and spacious environment, whilst canopies and their Verandahs allow homeowners to blur the boundaries between home and garden creating a new outside inside space to enjoy. When it comes to solid insulated roofs, Prefix Systems pride themselves on the configurability of their system. Whether

The product that I found most fascinating, and desirable, was the WARMwall build system which, when coupled with a WARMroof provided a perfect answer to off-site building. The beauty of this Greatest Showroom is that it showed off this product brilliantly with a full build that also included cutaways to show the construction. The highly insulated panels, made from cold-formed steel, magnesium oxide board and lightweight structural polyurethane thermal filling, have a variety of finishes to

suit every taste and anyone considering this type of product should really visit and view the product in detail. When viewing the example build the surprises continue with WARMglass, an electrically heated glass unit for heating the room, saving space and providing an aesthetically pleasing look. This WARMglass can replace radiators, underfloor heating or fires providing a heating range of between 0 and 65 degrees C. With thermostatic control, low E glass and warm edge spacer, the toughened glass reduces condensation as well. We were shown this off-site building system as the perfect answer for those looking for an extension to their house. It’s quick and easy to construct and the finishes allow
an extension to fit in with any build style. However, the invited trade press editors found themselves discussing this extension product being ideal for a standalone, bottom of the garden, office. Of course, the imagination then keeps going! Wouldn’t they be perfect for holiday homes instead of poorly insulated cabins? The opportunities are vast and I have to admit that I wish I was in the market for an extension or selfstanding garden room/office. WARMwall, WARMroof and WARMglass combine to make a very compelling off-site building solution. READER ENQUIRY NO: 0819/0061

GGFI WORKS TOWARDS PAPERLESS WITH POLICY DOCUMENTS DELIVERED THROUGH SECURE LINK GGFi, the glazing industry’s leading insurance broker and Insurance Backed Guarantee (IBG) provider, has further improved its customer service offer with the introduction of a paperless option, with policy documents delivered via email to homeowners following completion of a secure link process.
The online function is a secure process for everyone involved and requires the policyholder to validate their email address by clicking on a secure link, following which their policy documents will be emailed to them automatically. Documents will continue to be sent via post should homeowners prefer it.
GGFi Head of Operations, Frank Allain, explains: “These days email and digital communication is the first choice of contact for the majority of homeowners so we have responded accordingly. For policyholders for whom we have an email address, we offer the option to email their documentation which means they receive the material almost immediately and will always have their policy available – no more paperwork being lost or accidentally thrown away.”
GGFi sends out more than 200,000 policies per year and moving to an online model will have a significant, positive environmental effect for the business. Frank Allain continues, “GGFi strives to be as sustainable a business as possible. Moving to an online model provides us with the perfect opportunity to do just that whilst simultaneously improving service levels for our policy holders and customers alike.” GGF Commercial Group Managing Director, Anda Gregory, “This is a fantastic new initiative for GGFi to implement and one which will prove to be extremely popular for all concerned and further enhances the GGFi position as an industry leader. It’s just one initiative out of many that we have planned throughout 2019 and we are incredibly excited about what we have in store during the next 6 months.”

they can withstand extreme weather conditions and perform flawlessly. The VEKA UK Group manufacturing plant even has its own in-house high tech weather testing rig.
1984 saw Ghostbusters hit the big screen, the average UK house price hit £37,182, and newly founded Norscot hit the home improvement scene in Caithness; quickly establishing its reputation as a reliable supplier and installer of high quality windows and doors.

We have an ethos of continuous improvement; we’re very proud of our success and we continue to embrace new technologies and opportunities. There have been many changes in the industry and in the company since it was founded, and 35 years ago I don’t think we could have anticipated the way technology would transform our business.
Since then, the family-owned company has continued to grow from strength to strength and is now a significant employer for the region with more than 60 staff, a near £5 million turnover and thousands of customers throughout the UK and overseas. Along with high quality PVCu window and door systems from VEKA UK Group, the company is also a leading manufacturer of timber frame kit homes, timber windows and doors and ‘Aluwood’ aluminium-clad timber windows and doors Norscot has been a VEKA customer for 31 years and is a proud member of Independent Network. As an Independent Network Fabricator, Norscot is also authorised to supply other IN installers thereby maintaining the ‘unbroken chain of quality’ that the Network is known for. 35 years in business is a milestone that Managing Director Callum Grant recognises could not have been achieved without the commitment of Norscot’s employees, suppliers and customers both past and present: “We have to say a huge thank you to everyone that has supported us over the years. Particularly our hard working staff, some of whom have been with Norscot 30 years or more. Callum also believes Norscot’s success has been driven by a commitment to customer service and quality products designed to cope with the worst the Highland weather can throw at them. DECEUNINCK AND VBH HOST THEIR ANNUAL
GOLF DAY AT BOWOOD GOLF RESORT
The weather forecast: Warm, fine, no wind, bit cloudy but no rain. If you picked a weather forecast like that you could be pretty certain it was the day of the Deceuninck/ VBH Golf Day. I don’t know how they do it, but every year they get it right! Perhaps Bowood Golf Club, near Deceuninck’s UK headquarters at Calne in Wiltshire, has its own micro-climate or maybe it’s just a case of the good guys getting all the luck with the weather.
Players gather for the briefing ahead of a shotgun start

With Ben in this form it’s not surprising that it was the Birmingham Glass Team who took the team prize with 92 stableford points with two scores to count. Yet more success for Birmingham Glass with Sam Wilds taking the longest drive with some 280 yards and in the Ladies category, it was Lucy Richmond who prevailed. Over 90 guests enjoyed the dinner and presentations and thanks, as ever, need to go to everyone at Deceuninck and VBH who make this day possible with special thanks to Deceuninck’s Gaby Handy and Carol Hearn and VBH’s Gary Gleeson and Claire Cook. It was a big turnout for this annual event, and rightly so. It’s an event that Deceuninck and VBH run so well. Some 19 teams took to the course, which has now become harder than previous years with it now being the PGA Official Golf Course for the South West, hence the course being tougher all round and the rough being much longer. Bowood certainly deserves this accolade from the PGA as it has long been recognised as a first class golf course and one which will now be tested to the full as the host venue for the final of the English PGA Championship in July 2019. Despite the tougher course, good scores were registered with the individual winner in the Men’s category being Birmingham Glass’ Ben Judd, playing off 20. He carded 42 stableford points as did the Ladies winner, Lucy Richmond of Castle Building Products, playing off 31.

MIKE BYGRAVE, MARKETING DIRECTOR AT ROSEVIEW WINDOWS,
DISCUSSES WHAT IT TAKES TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THE EVER-GROWING HERITAGE WINDOW MARKET
Sash windows are more popular now than at any time since their heyday in 19th century, when they were a core part of British architectural design. Growing interest in heritage styles, combined with a steady stream of original windows reaching their end-of-life and a new determination to replace poorly specified windows with more appropriate designs, have fuelled a heritage window boom. In otherwise uncertain times, more installers recognise the financial benefits of operating in the high-end, high-profit timber-alternative market. At Roseview we have been manufacturing uPVC sash windows for over 35 years. That’s made us one of the best-known names in a burgeoning timber-alternative sector that’s developing new ways of combining tradition styles with the performance, maintenance and installation benefits of modern materials and techniques. In that time we’ve seen a variety of heritage systems come and—sometimes—go. In most cases they fall into one of two camps: imitation or authentic.
IMITATION OR AUTHENTIC WINDOWS Imitation windows do exactly what they suggest – they imitate heritage styles and some of the more obvious details, but they don’t stand up to scrutiny. In our area of expertise—sash windows—there are several features that identify an imitation window; chunky profiles, mitred welds, ovalo detailing on the outside and unrealistic foils are all giveaways. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with imitation windows; one of our own models—Charisma Rose—falls into this category. They’re ideal for situations where budget takes precedence over detailed authenticity; new builds for instance, or all those houses where original sash windows were replaced by mock-sash pushouts in the 1990s. It’s a big market that’s growing all the time. For not a great deal more than you’d pay for a standard casement, you can have a proper sash window. But imitation windows generally won’t cut it where accuracy or visual consistency is important; for that you need authentic windows. Conservation areas are the most commonly used example of where these
42
should be used, but in fact there’s a wide variety of projects and scenarios. Any highend or traditional building, either old or new, will benefit from authentic windows, as will any home where the owner wants timber style but without the maintenance hassle. Returning to sash windows, slim timber-like sightlines, seamless sash horns, mechanical joints (vertical on sashes, horizontal on the frame – the details are important!) and smooth putty lines mean that from the street and from close-up the windows look better than timber. These are the sort of features you see on our Ultimate Rose sash windows, and the equivalent features will be there on authentic flush casements. Conservation officers and planners know the difference between imitation and authentic windows. More importantly, so do homeowners. For installers it’s all about identifying the priority – cost or detail – and selling products accordingly.
IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT APPEARANCE It’s easy to focus on aesthetics when selling heritage windows, but quality, performance and reliability are important too. After all
these are premium products, so they need to include premium features. Homeowners expect excellent energy efficiency, security and acoustic performance as standard, in an authentic package that outperforms original windows (and never needs repainting). When it comes to industry-leading sash windows, quality isn’t just in what you can see, but also what you can’t. Behind the scenes details that consumers may never see help transform a good sash window into a great one. In turn, that can help close a sale. All our Rose Collection sash windows include, for instance, extreme weather packs as standard. Designed to protect windows from the fiercest conditions, these hidden features are generally only used in cliff-top, coastal and exposed locations. We include them on every window. Similarly, all our windows include internal butterfly clips
usually only found on Secured by Design windows, adding an extra layer of strength as standard. Even on the more accessible exterior, we’ve developed features that end-users are unlikely to notice, but improve the overall quality of a window. An example is the bespoke full-length aluminium carrier that we developed for astragal bars. This system provides bar-to-glass adhesion that beats the standard clip and tape or fully taped methods used by other fabricators. Astragal bars are a key feature of heritage windows, so developing ways of improving them is important, both for homeowners and installers.
SETTING A STANDARD Manufacturing windows for the high-end heritage market means excelling in all areas, including those that others neglect. Authenticity, performance, innovation and service all combine to make a product—or in our case suite of products—that justify the extra cost over a ‘standard’ window. And while the market for standard products falters in uncertain times, it’s important that the premium heritage window market and its fabricators allow installers to access highend, high-profit projects in confidence. SPECIALIST BENDING COMPANY, FORCE 8 HAVE NOW ADDED VERTICAL SLIDERS TO THEIR EXTENSIVE PORTFOLIO Leading arched PVC company Force 8 have now introduced arched vertical sliders to their extensive collection of products, using REHAU profile. Force 8 fully fabricate the arched vertical sliders, in their Hazel Grove factory. Adding vertical sliders to their extensive portfolio allows Force 8 to expand on their current knowledge and expertise to extend the number of products that they are selling to the customers. Dennis Sumner, Managing Director of Force 8 comments “Throughout our 30 years within the industry, we have found that being able to manufacture arched vertical sliders, especially the arches, is a service that trade customers have been looking to have. Creating vertical sliders especially arched can be difficult to manufacture and any mistake can be costly” The overall design of the vertical slider features a 35mm meeting rail, giving an authentic look and with other features such as full mechanical joints and run through sash horns, you can expect this to give off a period feature. Due to these added features, even experts can’t tell it apart from a genuine timber sash.
MERCURY GLAZING ADDS SPECTUS FLUSH CASEMENT WINDOW TO ITS RANGE Gloucestershire-based trade fabricator Mercury Glazing has just added Spectus’ flush casement window to its growing product range. Steve Cross, Director at Mercury Glazing said: “We are delighted to be adding the Spectus flush casement window to our portfolio. We are one of the UK’s biggest Spectus vertical slider manufacturers and the flush casement window is the perfect complementary product.” The Spectus flush casement window mimics the traditional appearance of period properties, whilst offering superb energy efficiency. Aesthetically, it offers the heritage looks of a nineteenth century window that sits flush within its frame and is virtually indistinguishable from the timber equivalent. With a choice of bevelled outside and bevelled or sculptured options for the inside along with mechanical jointing of the sash and deep bottom rails, the Spectus flush casement is fast becoming the window of choice for conservation, heritage and modern properties alike. A choice of colour

options from the Spectrum colour palette are available too. But behind the period looks there is a 21st century window with no compromise on the thermal efficiency, security and low maintenance benefits. It all means the window offers an unbeatable combination for even the most sensitive of refurbishments. The flush casement window will be manufactured by Mercury’s skilled and experienced team in its state-of-the-art Gloucester factory, guaranteeing a quality result every time. Customers will also have the reassurance of Mercury’s commitment to a level of customer service that aims to build a long-term relationship. As Steve says, the flush casement window is the perfect complement to the Spectus vertical slider range which Mercury manufactures, making the company a credible partner for heritage-style windows. As Force 8 have 30 years’ experience, they have heavily invested in the equipment that is needed to create a one-piece bend without the need to weld. For any trade customer looking to have an arched vertical slider, the smallest arch that Force 8 can manufacture is a 300mm radius and this can still be made with a one-piece bend. “Vertical sliders are one of our premium products and with its grained finish, having to use welds can destroy the overall aesthetics of the design. As we’ve constantly developed our one-piece bending approach, we’ve found a way not to destroy the design”, comments Dennis. Force 8 will focus on manufacturing the arches for the vertical sliders. However, don’t hesitate to send Force 8 your arched vertical slider specification to get fully quoted by the company. To add to the wide range of effects that vertical sliders present, they can be offered in a wide range of effect options, whether that’d be wood grain or a smooth white finish, adding an authentic finish. Vertical sliders can now be offered in all RAL colours that will be sprayed on site by Force 8, ensuring that customers have a wide range of designs available to choose from. INDUSTRY AWARDS
The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
THERMOSEAL GROUP TO VEKA UK GROUP’S KHALEEL IS YOUNG EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR CELEBRATE A DECADE OF VEKA UK Group’s Trainee Operations Manager, Khaleel Mahmood, has been named joint winner of the Young Employee of the Year Award at the prestigious Burnley Business Awards 2019. The trophy was presented in recognition of the valuable contribution Khaleel has made to the industry-leading PVCu systems supplier since he joined in 2017. The Awards Ceremony, organised by Burnley Council and the Burnley Bondholder Brand Scheme, was held in the beautiful surroundings of Towneley Hall and grounds and hosted by Christian Fraser from BBC World News. The event celebrated the region’s booming economic infrastructure; recognising and rewarding the hard work of companies and individuals across the Burnley business community. VEKA UK Group was shortlisted for in an impressive four awards, including ‘Manufacturing Excellence’, ‘Employer of the Year’, ‘Burnley Business of the Year’ and ‘Young Employee of the Year’ which hardworking Khaleel scooped on the night. The Lancashire manufacturer is no stranger to these Awards having, in recent years, been named ‘Business of the Year’ twice in a row, and ‘Employer of the Year’ at the last BBA event. VEKA UK Group was also recently crowned Manufacturing Business of the Year at the 2019 Red Rose Business awards. Operations Director Paul Armstrong said: “VEKA UK Group is a major Burnley employer and we were delighted to be shortlisted in so many categories at the Business Awards; it’s always a pleasure to be recognised for continuing hard work, and being shortlisted in four such varied categories shows that ours is a well rounded company, as committed to staff training and development as we are to manufacturing excellence. “Khaleel’s award was very well deserved; since joining us, he has consistently gone

‘above and beyond’ in every task, and has thrown himself into every available training opportunity. It’s hard to believe how much he’s achieved in just two years. “Khaleel’s first project saw him lead a team in carbon fibre wrapping concrete beams within the technically advanced mixing plant. He was responsible for managing his team safely and effectively and for managing a budget of £200,000. This task was completed under budget and well within the expected timescale. “In the packaging department, an increase in production had led to a bottleneck of around 150-200 pallets of manufactured product – with a combined value of £280,000 – which had not yet been made ready for sale. Khaleel and the team had this backlog cleared in under three months. “Khaleel then spent four months on shifts in the lamination department where he acted as Interim Production Unit Leader during the restructure of three teams. Khaleel proved that, as well as being logical and practical, he is also great with people and well liked across the business; a natural VEKA leader. “These experiences led Khaleel to his current role as Graduate Trainee in Operations Management. He’s proven himself to be capable, intelligent and efficient in a way that makes him a pleasure to work with and a huge asset to the business; displaying VEKA values at all times. Our congratulations to Khaleel and all who celebrated at the Burnley Business Awards evening.” Khaleel said: “I was absolutely thrilled to be named joint winner of this award. I knew I had been shortlisted, but it was still a big surprise to win on the night. When I read the profiles of the other nominees I was really impressed; the calibre of competition was high, so I’m very proud of myself. “The support and encouragement I get from my colleagues at VEKA UK Group is fantastic, but it was extra special to have an independent panel of judges acknowledge that I’m doing a good job and pushing in the right direction. Having such a commendation has motivated me even more - to work harder than ever, and see what else I can achieve in the year ahead.” There are more than 380 people working at VEKA UK Group’s Burnley HQ and the company strives to ensure that every person is happy and fulfilled in their role, working with employees to find out what can be done to help them achieve their goals in the year ahead. The result is a hard-working, committed workforce with shared goals - creating a customer experience that is second to none. Tel: 01282 716611 - www.vekauk.com READER ENQUIRY NO: 0819/0071

COLD CALLING
TUFFX GLASS BRINGS UNCOMMON BEAUTY TO COMMON FARM
Glass manufacturer TuffX worked their glazing magic on a more unusual residence recently by giving a contemporary upgrade to a Staffordshire farm. Earlier this year, Common Farm, near Stoke on Trent, received brand new external, walk-on glass floors, framed with 21.5mm laminated glass balustrades. The property sits in a landscape of rolling hills and trees; an environment where natural light and the essence of space are innate features. Selected as the supplier due to their industry reputation for speed, reliability and consistent high quality, TuffX provided the project with 10m2 of 33mm laminated walk-on floor panels, each finished with a Dream Anti-Slip glass layer. Both these, and the perpendicular balustrades were cut with radial corners, evoking soft shapes to match the contours of the overlooked outdoor swimming pool and dry stone walls. TuffX Managing Director Graham Price is especially pleased with the end result: “While TuffX has supplied products of this type for many projects, it’s not often that we need to really consider the natural surroundings as much as we did at Common Farm. Installing large panes of glass within such a beautiful, scenic setting is simple; making it appear as though it belongs, takes extra thought. “The polished surfaces reflect sunlight from every angle, and ensure that the panoramic view of the countryside is never compromised. Our clients wanted the balcony to enhance their property and act as an observation point while remaining functional. We feel that we have absolutely achieved this aim within this project.” www.tuffxglass.co.uk READER ENQUIRY NO: 0819/0074

DANNY WILLIAMS
‘COLD CALLING’ Each month our special correspondent Danny Williams* replies to a reader’s letter... “When I get a lead about installing a conservatory, I increasingly find that what they are talking about is an extension. Has the conservatory had its day? These days it seems to be all about solid roofs they’ve seen in the Sunday supplement, or solid roofs with roolights. They then want sliding doors or bifolds, and fully fitted out with all the services. It’s as if they really need a builder as opposed to an installer like me! So I am thinking about getting fully into offering ’glazed extensions’ now; what do you think?” TJ, Cornwall Well TJ, the question you first have to ask is; ‘do I want to compete?’ Let’s look at some of the things you need to consider before you get into full-on extensions or actually, even producing a decent Orangery. If you really want to compete in today’s world of high-end connies, you’re not throwing in half a dozen windows, a bi fold and a new comp front door then walking away with a fist full of dollars after three days, to have a few jars at the pub on your way home. Before you do anything at all you need to do some serious prep and investigation works: no longer can you use your fabricator’s price matrix and think you’re going to be anywhere near an accurate quote for the job. You must seriously up your game and knowledge. In my experience as a trade fabricator I have supplied plenty of wannabe window fitters turned ‘developers’ who inevitably were left crying in their milk because they couldn’t be arsed to learn the complexities of building, even the importance of getting someone in that does. You must have quotes and contracts that are watertight, you need to understand and charge for additions and you must send in your tender with caveats that cover items that may or may not manifest themselves as the job progresses. Do NOT do it on the ‘my-word-is-my-bond’ silly hand shake that so many do for a house-full of windows, because there are too many curved balls
when it comes to building a modern Orangery or indeed, a ‘glazed extension’. For example the sloping site that needs building up and the lovely neighbour Dave’s fifty foot high leylandii that demands a two metre deep plus footing; checking the existing electrical consumer unit to make sure it’s got enough spare breakers; understanding if the boiler and plumbing is up to the task; and making sure you know where the drains run and if there’s something you can do or the local water authority need to be called in; oh and of course, don’t forget any gas pipes. A thorough understanding of building work is fundamental even for Orangery installs and small extensions. At the very least team up with a reputable builder until you secure enough work in terms of a pipeline to secure experienced staff yourself; and I don’t mean someone that can hold a spade! You need to project manage these jobs with at least a rudimentary experience and knowledge of building control, including an understanding of drawings, terminology, planning, structural calculations for the lintels and eventual knock through; don’t forget the energy efficiency EPC calculations: a knowledge of all of these little gems is required. After that you will have to schedule the trades with military precision, and manage a clear and accurate building programme or you will never get finished and your customer’s Christmas dinner will be cancelled and your name will be dirt. You will be inspected by a building control officer who will just tell you the way it is rather than the way you think it should be; oh and make sure your guys have some
rudimentary health and safety training, something like a CSCS card…and you’ll also do well to have a certificate in manual handling and working at height; and you should also have some risk assessments and method statements and keep a tidy site. Sounds a bit over the top? Not if someone gets hurt and you lose your home, all your worldly goods and perhaps even your freedom over a claim. And of course, it’s someone’s home and especially if there are kids you need some Heras fencing to keep the little blighters from hurting themselves, which would not be the best look for your burgeoning extension building empire. The outlay for projects of this nature can be substantial and as your cash will be tied up for some time, make sure you organise finance and agree a payment schedule with your customer, or your lads will be off down the road to work for your competitor for an extra pound an hour….and projects of this nature have a far bigger impact on everyone involved so you must realistically manage your client’s expectations, which means you don’t just have to be nice to Mr & Mrs Smith whilst they sign for the order… I think that’s covered the main things you will have to think about if you do decide to move into extensions. But get all of this right and you can make yourself a tidy sum and after doing a few jobs to a satisfactory standard you may just find yourself with a year’s work ahead and flat out, so no more feast and famine. My old business partner went at it the right way and has made a mint. Easy Peasy really; let me know what you decide TJ.

COLOUR
The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
STELLAR IN COLOUR
Stellar, the groundbreaking new aluminium window and door system from Epwin Window Systems, has rapidly become the most talked-about aluminium system for years. The brand new system has been designed from the ground up and offers powerful benefits to homeowners, fabricators and installers alike. And what is true of the system as a whole is also true of the colour offering. Stellar is available in a range of gloss levels, giving customers an outstanding choice. In addition to stocked colours, customers can choose any RAL colour or dual colour combination. Stellar colour uses a polyester powder coat that has been certified to the Qualicoat coastal standard, which surpasses European requirements and delivers powerful durability. And the coating process uses a chrome-free pre-treatment, which means it is already compliant with
0819/0076
new regulations that come into effect in 2021 and makes it more environmentally friendly. Stellar’s standard colours are Signal White (RAL9003), Anthracite Grey (RAL7016) and the dual colour Anthracite Grey / Signal White (RAL7016 / RAL9003), all in a flat matt finish. Non-standard colours are Cream (RAL9001), Agate Grey (RAL7038), Slate Grey (RAL7015), Chocolate Brown (RAL8017), Jet Black (RAL9005), available in a flat matt finish, and Anthracite Grey (RAL7016) in a textured finish. Stellar’s colour offering is part of an exceptional package of benefits that add real value to fabricators and installers’ portfolios. For example, Stellar’s fully flush casement window has no stepped frame inside or out, making it a first for the aluminium sector. FROM THE BACK OF A GUNROOM TO ALUMINIUM GLAZING SPECIALIST
GROWTH IN ALUMINIUM SECTOR REFLECTED IN SALES OF HAFFNER MURAT’S SPRING S7000 MACHINING CENTRE
Morgan’s Windows Doors and Conservatories has grown from having a tiny unit at the back of a gunroom and small builder’s merchants into creating a brand-new state-of-the-art showroom in Oswestry. It’s all been with the help of AluFoldDirect, whose strategic innovations have helped Morgan’s to achieve profitable business growth, proving that great partnerships can build impressive success stories.
Dave Thomas, Managing Director of machinery specialists Haffner Murat, says his company’s sales are always a reliable indicator of what’s happening in the window industry. “The industry buzz at the moment is all about the growth of aluminium. Our sales show that to be true with many fabricators choosing to invest in our ITALMAC Spring S7000 4 Axis Machining Centre as they look to capitalise on what aluminium has to offer.”
Paul Rowney, manager at Morgan’s explains: “We started up fitting uPVC windows and doors around seven years ago. We were self-taught at installing and expanded into fitting composite doors, French doors, sliders and eventually aluminium bi-fold doors which is where our relationship with AluFoldDirect began. “At that time, we had a little room behind a builder’s merchants and gunroom and we were a small, hands-on team. We started using sub-contractors as we got busier and eventually took on our own installers. Now we have seven fully MTC-approved fitters on our team who have attended personalised training sessions at the AluFoldDirect Training Academy. It works really well, because we find that customers are much more at ease with our own installers, especially if they have any queries or issues. “Having access to the Everything Aluminium range helps us too. We work on a range of projects from commercial to residential and AluFoldDirect always has a solution for us. In terms of the domestic market, it seems everyone still wants to achieve that open plan look with a bi-fold door and rooflights, which means there are plenty of opportunities for us to go at.
“We’re finding that aluminium is becoming more and more popular for new-build as well. The aluminium product is so superior, it sells itself. The smooth, contemporary finish and, of course, Anthracite Grey is just so popular with homeowners and developers. “AluFoldDirect has been an excellent support and the service from Chris is second to none – quotes are quick, delivery is fast and he has helped to kit out our new showroom.” Morgan’s has taken full advantage of AluFoldDirect’s Trade Support Package for installers, which includes free sample products for showrooms and exclusive marketing literature. AluFoldDirect delivers the Everything Aluminium range in one week unglazed, two weeks glazed, anywhere in the UK, right first time, every time. The Aluminium Installer Training Academy is free for customers. Tel: 01706 260700 READER ENQUIRY NO: 0819/0077

THE ALUMINIUM ADDED PROTECTION WHERE NEEDED FROM CRITTALL MW40 SECTOR TAKES Crittall’s Corporate MW40 steel windows can be specified where superior air, wind or water resistance and greater sound attenuation are required. Offering the same high-quality appearance as the company’s successful Corporate W20 range the MW40 variant can accept glass up to twice the thickness as its stable mate. Either double, or triple glazing up to 32mm thick can be installed with a consequent higher level of thermal or sound insulation. This is achieved while retaining the same slender steel profile for which Crittall products are renowned thereby ensuring maximum light ingress.
Corporate MW40 features a highperformance double weather seal and is supplied hot dip galvanised with a low maintenance Duralife polyester powder coating in a range of RAL and BS shades. It is available in a wide range of configurations and its special properties are proving particularly attractive in the education, hotel and healthcare sectors as well as other commercial settings where thermal and acoustic properties are a major concern. The windows can be installed with solar control, laminated security or sound control glazing as required and the window has found favour with architects for both new build and heritage style replacement windows. Corporate MW40’s ‘stepped’ profile is particularly redolent of traditional fenestration dating back to the early 20th century. Avoiding a bland, flat-faced appearance it therefore fits well into heritage refurbishments but also offers a clean-cut aesthetic equally at home with contemporary designs. www.crittall-windows.co.uk

A GIANT LEAP FORWARD WITH STELLAR
Stellar, the new aluminium window and door system from Epwin Window Systems has been gaining plaudits since it was launched at FIT 2019. The brand-new aluminium system, designed for the retail and light commercial markets, addresses the need for cutting-edge windows and doors as witnessed in the advances being made in the PVC-U sector. Gerald Allen, Marketing Manager of Epwin Window Systems explains: “The PVC-U sector has witnessed some incredible design and technical advances in recent years. The same cannot be said for the aluminium sector. Rather than designing new systems from scratch, existing product suites have been adapted to fit and often lacked the design flair that was needed. It’s an approach that has held the sector back. But Stellar has changed this. It’s a system that has been designed from the ground up by a team of aluminium experts and delivers on every aspect of modern-day design giving our customers a real competitive advantage”.
SENIOR’S PURE® RANGE MOVES FORWARD WITH NEW PARALLEL PUSH WINDOW
The initial design brief was to produce the best aluminium system for the UK’s homeowners. The results are an extraordinary example of what a refusal to compromise on excellence can deliver.
Senior Architectural Systems has added further flexibility to its innovative PURe® range of ultra-low U-value aluminium windows with the development of a new parallel push option.
For example, there are two casement window options. The first has no stepped frame inside or out, making it the only fully flush aluminium casement window on the market today. The standard flush casement window has at least 30% slimmer sightlines than competitor windows and delivers a
Designed to offer balanced air flow and ventilation with maximum safety, the restricted opening of the PURe® parallel push aluminium windows make them ideally suited to a wide range of sectors including education, healthcare, and high-rise commercial and residential developments. Benefitting from a patented thermal barrier manufactured from expanded polyurethane (PUR) foam, the new PURe® parallel push aluminium window, like the rest of the range, offers exceptional low U-values and high thermal performance. The new window option is able to receive double or triple glazing up to 57mm for maximum thermal and acoustic performance and can achieve U-values as low as 0.90 W/ m²K when calculated as a commercial CEN standard window. With hinges on all sides of the frame, the window can be easily pushed open and yet will remain parallel to the wall. This
enables rooms to be safely ventilated, with the limited opening helping to reduce the risk of falls from the window. Aesthetically, the use of push parallel style windows can also help to create a more uniform façade and the new PURe® window option is fully compatible with the full range of Senior’s slim profile aluminium curtain walling system for seamless integration. The new parallel push option is the latest configuration to be added to Senior’s popular PURe® aluminium window range, with existing options including casement, tilt and turn and reversible overswing. Thanks to Senior’s reliable and high-quality

glass area that’s around 12% larger. And the bifold door has the option of using PVC-U beading, so it has the strength a bifold needs but aesthetics that sit more comfortably in the typical UK home. Not only does Stellar take aluminium aesthetics to the next level, it has also been designed to be straightforward to fabricate and install. The unique pre-gasketed system saves up to 20% on fabrication time and reduces overall waste. The patent-pending Reverse Butt Joint means no dummy sashes or reverse adaptor profiles are needed, so the system uses up to 30% less aluminium. It takes fast-fit espagnolettes so no shootbolts are required too. Patent-pending knock-in beads make glazing quicker and easier. They also leave a clean gasket line on the inside, enhancing the aesthetics. The frames are flat backed to make it easy to position them while flat rebates make fitting glazing packers simple. Quite simply, Stellar breaks the mould in aluminium system design and delivers what today’s consumer is looking for. It is a system that could only have been developed by a well-established systems house with an impressive infrastructure and investment ability - Epwin Window Systems. YALE SETS THE STANDARD BY UPGRADING TO STAINLESS STEEL
CARL F GROUPCO
PARTNERS WITH YALE Established hardware distributor Carl F Groupco has partnered with Yale to supply the leading lock manufacturer’s full product range. This announcement is the latest in a series of significant developments by Carl F Groupco that will maintain the company’s position at the forefront of the UK’s Fenestration hardware market.
Yale has announced that it is upgrading to stainless steel on all of its multipoint lock faceplates as standard, providing new user features and benefits in terms of durability, aesthetics and reduced carbon footprint. Stainless steel is instantly associated by the consumer with its anti-corrosion properties; is more durable in transportation and fabrication and is less susceptible to surface damage and corrosion, ensuring a longer lasting and sturdier locking solution. Yale’s shift to stainless steel supports the ASSA ABLOY group’s sustainability initiatives, tackling industrial processes that are present and challenging throughout the hardware industry today. The chemical process of plating has always created environmental challenges in that, by-product must be disposed of correctly and with extreme care to avoid environmental damage – whereas stainless steel has no requirement for this process entirely, with the whole manufacturing process taking place solely at Yale HQ. This improves carbon footprint, avoiding the need to transport components to and from specialist platers or avoiding manufacture off-shore where controls may be less stringent, whilst also ensuring a more ethical sourcing approach as it does not exploit the cheaper prices typically available in developing countries. Paul Atkinson, Sales and Commercial Director for Yale Door and Window
Solutions, comments: “We are always looking for new ways to develop our product ranges, ensuring we are constantly enhancing our product offering with gains such as this to maintain our market leading status. “The durability and consumer perception of the multipoint lock will be enhanced with this simple change to stainless steel as standard. Being able to deliver an overall enhanced product, as well as moving to a more socially sustainable process, is clearly a great success and something that has appeal to the trade and consumer alike. “It is really important to us at Yale to be able to create a positive impact throughout our product’s lifecycle – from design right through to use.” No customer prices will be affected as a direct result of this enhancement For more information on Yale’s multipoint door locks and their sustainability initiatives, please visit www.yaledws.co.uk. Commenting on the importance of the partnership with Yale, Carl F Groupco’s Managing Director John Crittenden said: “This is a strategic move for Carl F Groupco and we are excited to be working closely with Yale which means we are introducing new products, future product development and testing which will ensure continued advancements for our customers. “The Yale brand has instant consumer recognition along with excellent product and security guarantees. This is a great fit with the Carl F Groupco philosophy of supplying secure fittings backed by strong warranties that our customers can trust. We really like the fact that Yale products are designed for the UK market and the majority are developed and manufactured in Britain, which resonates with many of our customers and supports our On Time in Full delivery ethos.” Confirming the significance of Carl F Groupco supplying the full Yale range, Paul Atkinson Sales & Marketing Director for Yale said: “We are delighted to welcome Carl F Groupco as a
major stockist of Yale Hardware. The relationship has been strong for many years with Carl F Groupco stocking Defender Friction stays and various Yale ranges, however with our most recent acquisition of Trojan Hardware the relationship has become much closer and more strategic. “This development means that Carl F Groupco has the ability to sell the full Yale range with full utilisation of our guarantees and brand.” As the oldest lock brand, Yale is one of the best-known and most respected names in the lock industry. Carl F Groupco also has a strong provenance with a trading history dating back over fifty years, partnering with leading hardware manufacturers such as Cotswold, FUHR, Glazpart, Greenwood, Hoppe, Kenrick, MACO, Roto, Strand, Siegenia and now Yale. WEST PORT’S FASTENER FOCUS HELPS DELIVER ASSURED FIRE DOOR PERFORMANCE Rapierstar’s specialist technical support has played a key role in helping West Port to achieve high performing fire rated door-sets, by eliminating the risk of failure during testing as a result of the incorrect choice and application of fasteners. Rapierstar, which is the UK’s market-leading supplier of window and door fasteners, is recommending that fire door manufacturers follow West Port’s lead and not overlook the major role that these smallest of components play in a doorset’s structural integrity, durability and long term quality. West Port doorsets offer outstanding performance in either 30-minute or 60-minute options, providing installers with a trusted fire protection solution. Andy Tyas, Operations Director at West Port says: “From the outset we wanted to create fire doors that
offer performance that far exceeds the ratings they are awarded, demonstrated by our 30 minute fire doors actually achieving 42 minutes in testing. Our 60 minute fire door is another really important development which, like our FD30 option, is built using only technically superior components.” Rapierstar, whose collective technical expertise in fastener design, manufacture and application totals more than 100 years, has provided West Port with detailed guidance on which fasteners to use throughout the door-set’s construction in order to achieve the 30 and 60 minute fire ratings. In addition to input at the design stage, this includes training to ensure fabricators use fasteners correctly, and regular auditing of the factory to maintain consistency in the quality and promised protection level in finished door-sets. Paul Balfe, Technical Consultant at Rapierstar, says: “Any door is only as good as its weakest components, and all too often that turns out to be the fasteners as a result of choosing the wrong type of screws for the application or sourcing poor quality screws. With fire doors, it goes without saying that
A fire rated door-set manufactured by West Port, which are built to deliver trusted performance using quality components including Rapierstar fasteners
weak points simply must not exist, given that their role is to protect lives and assets. That’s why it’s vitally important that fastener choice is given the same attention and scrutiny as the glass type, the insulating qualities of the door slab, the intumescent seals, etc. “A fire rated door-set is tested as a complete system, so there is absolutely no scope to substitute the components at a later stage, no matter how small. We can help eliminate the risk of fasteners being substituted through a process of regular reviews and monitoring to provide assurance to endcustomers.” To find out more about how Rapierstar fasteners can provide a reliable solution in fire rated door-sets, please call 01260 223311 or visit www.rapierstar.com. Brisant Secure has a long track record as a security company, that creates locks and handles which keep people safe. In Brisant’s development of Ultion SMART, homeowner security was at the top of the wish list. Ultion SMART has been developed in collaboration with Salto Systems. Their tried and tested Danalock technology used with Brisant’s most secure lock and handle, creates a new customer focussed Smart lock. Ultion SMART gives the consumer choice. It works on any door that takes a euro-cylinder. It is fitted with the Ultion 3 Star Sold Secure Diamond lock, comes with a £1,000 guarantee and with a real key. Brisant’s research showed that homeowners wanted the peace of mind of being able to over-ride any technology with a key. Ultion SMART can be retro-fitted and with the technology being on the inside of the door, the homeowner has the choice of keeping their original external handle or suiting it with one of Brisant’s security designed Sweet handles. The additional benefit of this is that from the outside no one
would know the front door was fitted with Smart technology. Ultion SMART does everything that a homeowner would expect from a Smart lock. It works through an app, but to safeguard the door from being hacked, not through the internet. The app allows the homeowner to lock their door automatically through the app or voice command. It enables the homeowner to set a “geofence” that works through Bluetooth, enabling the door to unlock automatically when the phone gets within range. All features can be switched on or off, dependent on the needs of the homeowner. Ultion SMART can also work with Amazon Alexa using “If This Then That” allowing the homeowner to lock Ultion Smart simply by saying, “Alexa, lock the door.” It also works with Apple Homekit, enabling Siri, iPhone, iPad and the Apple watch. Of course, if desired, the key over-rides all of it. Then there are lots of extra features that make Ultion SMART the right choice for everyone, not just the lovers of technology amongst us. It is fitted with “twist assist” meaning the lightest touch
can open the door from the inside, perfect for people with arthritis or limited mobility. It can come with a wireless keypad allowing people to be given a code to enter, either just one time or on multiple occasions. This is ideal for carers or Air B&B. It works with batteries and glows red when they need to be changed, as well as telling you on your app. If you forget, you can always use the key, just like you do at the moment. Brisant-Secure put the security of the homeowner at the centre of all of their developments and Ultion Smart is no exception. FASTENER INNOVATION DELIVERS SMOOTHER, BETTER QUALITY CASEMENTS Sticking, scraping and binding friction stays could be a thing of the past thanks to the development of the new LFG low profile screw by window and door fastener specialist Rapierstar.
MILA EXTENDS PROSECURE TBT RANGE Mila’s ProSecure TBT gearing range is now available with the option of a new fully concealed hinge alongside the existing visible, face-fix option. It comes with the same combination of high specification and SBD accreditation which is already making Mila’s ProSecure TBT hardware popular with leading fabricators such as Pearl Windows, and with the same market leading 10 year mechanical operation guarantee. This new profile related hinge offers what Mila are describing as
‘significant’ benefits for the fabricator, the installer and the end user. For fabricators, it offers simple, jigless assembly and easier fitting because it allows the window to open to 95° and eliminates the familiar problem of TBT sashes continually trying to close during production. For installers, it is concealed on both the inside and out so there are no issues to address in terms of plaster lines or colour matching. And, for end users, as well as the improved aesthetics, the new hinge features an antiblowback function which stops the window from slamming closed or fully open in windy conditions. Richard Gyde, Mila’s Managing Director, says this is clearly a winning product: “Our ProSecure TBT range is manufactured by AXOR, one of Europe’s leading hardware manufacturers. Quality and value are the trademarks of AXOR’s products, but they also incorporate real userfriendly design innovation as well. This new hinge is the perfect example of that, with clever features which

outstrip the competition but at a lower price point.” The concealed hinge matches the 130kg capacity of the standard visible hinge and can accommodate windows up to1520mm wide and 2390mm high. It has already sailed through PAS24:2016 testing on TBT windows in Veka, Liniar and Eurocell profiles, with further tests to come, making it easy for customers to achieve the ADQ and Secured by Design accreditations they need in the new build sectors.
Following a comprehensive 12-month trial with several major fabricators and distributors across the UK fenestration sector, Rapierstar is extending the roll out this pan head fastener, which is specifically designed to attach friction stays to PVC-U frames. LFG was developed by Rapierstar at its NPD and technical centre in Cheshire in combination with a leading friction stay manufacturer in response to feedback from across the industry, but it has the potential to deliver better casements for fabricators using any hinge brands. In certain circumstances, such as where a friction stay fastener is not inserted at a precise 90 degrees, or swarf causes slight misalignment of the screw as it is driven
“By engineering a fastener with a lower profile head, which has been achieved without compromising its technical performance, we can now offer fabricators another option to remove the risk of sticking, scraping and binding resulting in their casement windows over time.” into place, the head will be raised slightly. This will snag the friction stay during opening and closing of a casement window and impact on its smooth operation. Despite the tiny cost of this component, its impact can be significant. The fastener head snagging can result in customer dissatisfaction, along with more costly reputational damage for installers, particularly where a coated carbon steel fastener is used. The frequent opening and closing motion over time will scrape off a carbon steel screw’s protective coating, potentially causing premature corrosion and both the hinge and opening sash itself to become loose. David Furness, MD of Rapierstar, said: “Traditional pan head fasteners, like those in our StarPVCU range, fit the bill perfectly under normal circumstances, but we know that the limited clearance between the opening sash and frame leaves little margin for error. By engineering a fastener with a lower profile head, which has been achieved without compromising its technical performance, we can now offer fabricators another option to remove the risk of sticking, scraping and binding resulting in their casement windows over time.”
Mila’s ProSecure TBT range is manufactured in AXOR’s hugely impressive, purpose built factory in Ukraine which has full ISO9001 quality accreditation. It has been tested and accredited to way beyond the UK endurance and corrosion standards at IFT Rosenheim in Germany, which, as the largest test facility in Europe, is used by all of the best known names in the TBT hardware sector.
The LFG fastener is manufactured in austenitic stainless steel (grade 302) to provide enhanced resistance to corrosion, with a lifespan of at least 25 years guaranteed. It is one of a wide variety of high quality fasteners within the StarPVCU range, which provides fastener solutions for every element of a PVC-U window or door. Detailed guidance on which fasteners to use is available in Rapierstar’s Recommended Fixing Manuals (RFMs), which are published for all the main PVC-U profile systems and can be downloaded at www.rapierstar.com.

FASTENER ‘HEALTH CHECKS’ SET SIGHTS ON ELIMINATING ACCIDENT RISKS Specialist fastener advice from Rapierstar on choosing the correct fabrication screws, and applying them in the right way, is helping window and door fabricators to maintain and improve their health and safety performance and eliminate accident risks. The fastener supplier’s ‘Health Check’ audits, which offer a comprehensive review of and advice on the usage of fabrication screws throughout the manufacturing process, provide valuable insights into where production operatives could be risking serious injuries as a result of poor component choice. It is a service that Rapierstar customers are increasingly utilising as part of their health and safety strategy, to help address issues such as screws slipping during insertion because the drill point is poorly formed, and fasteners excessively wobbling or breaking during insertion. The latest data from the HSE (201718) estimates that workplace injuries cost businesses in Great Britain around £5.2bn annually, 20% of which is picked up by employers and more than 57% by employees. The costs to employers go well beyond personal injury claims by employees, with the HSE estimating that the hidden cost of accidents can be up to 10 times greater than the insured costs.
“Operating from its 100,000 sq. ft. warehouse and distribution centre near Macclesfield, Rapierstar works with fabricators and installers across the UK and Ireland to provide a complete product range, competitively priced and delivered next day.”
including lost time, sick pay, extra wages, overtime working and production delays. More serious reputational damage could also result if a prosecution case results and this is reported in the media. David Furness, MD of Rapierstar says: “Whist we don’t have current data on the extent of injuries in the UK door and window industry, we know from experience that some horrific injuries are caused because the fabrication screws are not fit for purpose. Making a few small changes in respect of the fasteners used for specific applications, supported by training for operatives, is something that we know can have a massive impact on safety.” With more than 25 years’ experience as a specialist fastener supplier to the window and door industry, Rapierstar is uniquely positioned to offer technical guidance, training and support. Operating from its 100,000 sq. ft. warehouse and distribution centre near Macclesfield, Rapierstar works with fabricators and installers across the UK and Ireland to provide a complete product range, competitively priced and delivered next day. The Rapierstar service is backed by industry-leading technical support team with a collective experience in the fastener market of more than 150 years. Customers are assisted further through the company’s in-house R&D and technical centre which, in addition to testing every single batch of fasteners for quality assurance, helps industry manufacturers and fabricators to deliver safe, secure, high performing finished products. SUPPLY THE DEMAND
DELIVERING COMPLETE CUSTOMER SATISFACTION Sarah Binns, Head of Internal Sales & Marketing, discusses what work has been undertaken to improve service since Window Ware launched its 2019 objectives in January. Following all our hard work and success in 2018, it would have been very easy for the Window Ware crew to ease up on the gas pedal in 2019. Having consistently achieved OTIF scores over 97% every month last year, with a ‘Service Excellence’ award win at the SME Bedfordshire Business Awards and a nomination for ‘Customer Care Initiative’ at the G18 Awards, you’d have thought a little rest was in order. The accolades and achievements don’t stop there, however. Window Ware was also named the UK’s best hardware supplier in an independent industry survey. Furthermore, the team managed to speed up response times for customers and source over 2,800 non-stocked items to serve specific hardware requirements. Despite all this, we’ve got no plans to slow down. Instead, we’ve been hard at work reviewing every area of our operations to see how we can further improve. Our customers depend on us to serve as a supply extension to their business – helping to solve their hardware issues and fulfil their sourcing needs. Whilst we’re incredibly proud to consistently achieve OTIF scores over 97% across our range of 6,500 products, we know there’s always room for improvement. Our first task was to tackle that wayward 3% of order lines that went awry.
To this end, we updated our ERP system to improve error visibility for sales and warehouse staff. We have now adopted a traffic light system, which allows staff to easily monitor our performance against our targets and ensure we always stay on track. We have also introduced several new processes, which ensure that any mistakes are fully investigated and prevented in the future. We have also taken extra steps to ensure deliveries always reach the right destination. Each customer record now includes a specific ship-to address, and as an extra fail-safe, our new system will not allow orders to leave the warehouse without the correct address being selected first. We’ve also focused our attention on optimising our communications. Following a review of our phone data, we identified that 10% of inbound calls relate to order queries or delivery issues, many of which might have been avoided in the first instance with precise and effective communication. To resolve this, we introduced clearer correspondence to our automated order confirmations and worked with our logistics provider, Aspray to upgrade their delivery notifications too which went live in April. It’s early days yet, but our improvements are already paying dividends. So far this year, we’ve managed to cut the number of credit notes in Q1 by 11% compared to the same period in 2018.
We’ve also reduced the number of errors caused by incorrect data entry, mispicks or unsuitable products and we’ve continued to improve our OTIF score month-on-month since the start of the year. We’re gratified by all these great achievements and we thank our customers for their pivotal role in this success. Their high expectations and regular feedback ensure we never get complacent or let our standards slip. Ultimately, we all want the same thing – to create a comprehensive service offering which always hits the spot. Of course, credit must also go to all our talented colleagues who work tirelessly to ensure we always deliver superior products, exceptional service and the absolutebest technical support. Every member of our team understands the vital role they play. As such, our informationhungry bunch of hardware experts are always open to new ideas and keen to grow their skills through regular training – all in a bid to solve our customers’ fabrication problems. There will definitely be no let-up for the rest of 2019 as we carry on striving to meet the needs of our discerning customers and maintain our reputation as a leading provider of uPVC and aluminium hardware, factory tools, fixings and consumables. QUICKSLIDE WELCOMES TONY TO THE IT CROWD West Yorkshire’s Quickslide have welcomed a new IT Support Engineer to their in-house staff team, proving that prior knowledge of fenestration isn’t always an essential pre-requisite to employment within the glazing industry. Tony Wainwright brings with him a wealth of professional experience with networks and servers – a crucial appointment, given the upgrades afforded to Quickslide’s recently refurbished website. He joins a highly proficient department as a vital additional resource, which the company anticipates will catalyse fresh ideas while further decreasing staff dependency risks. A personable chap, Tony’s main responsibility is to support the end user and oversee network infrastructure. Many of us know only too well an office’s morning
routine of PC on, kettle on, while we wait for the obligatory ten-minute boot up. Problems such as this are precisely why Tony has arrived. His newly introduced ticketing system has already assisted faster logging, tracking and response times to issues, while at the same time, allowing for the creation of a dynamic solution pool. As Quickslide’s business continues to grow, Tony’s role will inevitably mature and manoeuvre to develop and implement systems the company may not even be aware it needs yet. He’ll shortly take a seat at departmental heads meetings, sharing his knowledge on policy, security and compliance as well as work with IT Managers to take pipeline projects forward. www.quickslide.co.uk

Martin Thurley, Group Managing Director is delighted to confirm this appointment: “Chris has long been an integral part of our Design and Development team, helping to bring to market numerous Liniar products that would win awards and set the standard for the industry. The addition of double-glazed units as our standard offering has been a popular change, so that installers can better handle the glass on site. The upgrade to triple glazing is still available for the consumers who wish to have the most thermally efficient option and indeed, the WARMroof triple glazed option is the most thermally efficient hybrid roof system on the market today. Importantly, the new double-glazed units have a low U-value of just 1.0 W/(m2K), ensuring that the new rooms in which they are intended for stay warm, regardless of the time of year. The company have also recently standardised a plasterboard finish to the inside reveals of the glazed hybrid elements in the roof, making for an appearance typical to that of a standard extension construction, yet with the benefit of large glazed areas. Chris Baron, co-director Of Prefix Systems commented:’WARMroof hybrid is the
64
benchmark in terms of roof configurability and overall design. As is the way at Prefix, we listen to the needs of our customers and so the move to a double glazed unit as standard will make on site installation and handling far easier given the weight reduction. However, the 44mm triple glazed unit will still be an option for consumers specifically specifying this option.’ For brochures and further information on WARMroof please visit the downloads section at www.prefixsystems.co.uk, or contact the head office for a free brochure pack on 01254 871800, alternatively you can e-mail marketing@prefixsystems.co.uk. The replacement conservatory roof sector is booming, but installers must consider installing the Retro-Fix posts from Prefix Systems, given the potential catastrophic events of a structural failure. With tired polycarbonate glazed roofs being replaced with glass or solid, tiled roofs, the additional load bearing must be assessed. There’s a duty of care to consumers and so the sales, survey and installation process must consider the implications of a heavier roof. To put this into perspective, new glass roofs are typically four times as heavier than a polycarbonate roof and the latest tiled roofs are at least double the weight of a glass roof. Now celebrating over a decade in the market, Retro-Fix posts have been designed and engineered by Prefix Systems specifically for the conservatory replacement market and they were the first and still the only company with such
a development. Customers can liaise with all four Prefix branches, serving the entire UK with any structural queries relating to a replacement project, with the benefit of gaining expert technical guidance on structural requirements. It’s a simple process as whatever the roof configuration, Prefix can offer guidance on the use of Retro-Fix posts. Where they are specified on a project, it’s important to note that they are designed to blend in with the new structure, which makes it a big plus with the consumer from a finished design perspective. Chris Baron of Prefix Systems commented: ‘With around 3 million conservatories in need of upgrade or repair, we must assess the structural implications of installing a heavier roof in all projects. We’ve got over 10 years’ experience in this and a unique, structurally proven product in the form of Retro-Fix, so why not use our expertise on your next replacement job?’ For further information on Retro-Fix posts or any other Prefix Systems products then visit www.prefixsystems.co.uk, or call the head office on 01254 871800. BUILDING A REPUTATION
Self-building and home renovation have never been more popular.
The relaxed planning laws on larger extensions and infill properties have fuelled this growth and the National Home Building and Renovation Centre is the UK’s top destination for people looking for products and advice. The latest range to go into the NSBRC show arena in Swindon is The Genesis Collection by Bison Frames, with the complete product suite available for visitors to see on stand 165.
beautifully crafted Heritage or Finesse joints, visitors can see the difference in the look, and choose something that works perfectly with their house design.
“The finish is all important to self-builders, and that’s where our attention to detail shines through. We ensure that all our products are meticulously crafted with
care and offer a stunning finish. We believe visitors to the stand will find exactly the windows and doors they’re looking for.” The NSBRC is open six days a week and through the Genesis Installer Network homeowners can find trusted installers across the UK.
Mark adds: “The NSBRC offers visitors far more than just products, it’s great for advice as well. There are regular open days, and we are looking forward to taking part in future events, such as the next National Self Build & Renovation Show on October 18-20.” Tel: 0800 138 3838
“We know that glazing is one of the most important parts of any building, and for self-builders of new properties and large renovations, it’s even more vital,” says Mark Tetley, Managing Director for UK manufacturer Bison Frames. “That’s why we have fitted full sized working windows and doors with traditional and modern options, as well as loads of colour choices to suit every build. “Wide span glass, with bi-fold and sliding doors that play an integral part of open plan living and luxurious lounges, are featured on the stand. They’re also perfect for balconies, often a key feature for selfbuilders who manage to find plots with exceptional views. “Vertical sliding and flush sash windows are top of the shopping list for people looking for something that special. CDW SYSTEMS PARTNER WITH PROSALE TO OFFER AUTOMATIC DOOR TRAINING TO INSTALLERS CDW Systems, the Gloucester-based trade and commercial fabricator, has joined forces with automatic door specialists Prosale to offer installer customers training around automated doors. The new training sessions extend a long and successful partnership between the two firms whereby CDW manufactures and supplies aluminium doors, ready for Prosale to apply their automated gearing. The training takes place at Prosale’s state-of-theart facilities in Gloucester and is designed to give installers a complete overview of specifying and installing sliding, swinging and revolving automatic doors. “We are absolutely delighted to partner with Prosale to support their installer training initiative,” comments Mike Davis, Managing Director of CDW Systems. “Whilst automatic doors may be a popular feature in a wide variety of commercial projects, they can still be complex. If specified or installed
66
incorrectly, they could quite easily cause projects to be delayed or lead to costly callbacks to site. “This training brings together the leader in automatic door technology and one of the industry’s most respected aluminium fabricators to give installers complete product and installation training on a wide range of door systems. This not only ensures projects are completed correctly, but reputations are safeguarded, and relationships are protected. It’s a fantastic initiative from Prosale and we’re delighted to be involved.” Mike Coggins, Director at Prosale Automatic Doors adds: “We’re really thrilled to have the support of CDW Systems for our new training initiative. It’s fantastic to have a company with the experience and expertise of CDW Systems right on our doorstep. Our shared passion for delivering unrivalled quality and a complete service
makes them a perfect partner for our business and this initiative. “We want to thank Mike and the CDW team for their help with this training project and their valuable supply partnership. The training rigs supplied by CDW are not only used for our training, but also by the ADIA (Automatic Door Installation Association). The ADIA frequently use our rigs and training facilities for their courses and the response has been incredibly positive which is great to see. It’s all part of our commitment to give installers across the UK the support and confidence to install both of our companies’ products in all kinds of residential and commercial projects.” Founded in 1992, CDW Systems has firmly established itself as one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of high-quality glazing products. Supplying both trade and commercial installation companies across the UK, CDW manufactures windows,
doors, shop front systems and curtain walling from leading systems houses including Sapa (part of the Hydro Group), Reynaers, Aluk and Smart Systems. For more information call CDW Systems on 01452 414853 or visit www.cdwsystems.co.uk. READER ENQUIRY NO: 0819/0111

INSTALLER NETWORK REVIEW
The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
THE PLANITHERM NETWORK BRINGS COMFORT
A recent survey by SaintGobain Group focusing on the importance of health and wellbeing in the home, revealed that homeowners and renters wanted a home that is safe and secure, affordable to run, with no winter heating worries and low noise levels. These qualities are exactly the kind of benefits the right type of glass can deliver - and fabricators and installers should be talking to their customers about how they can help them achieve this.
The Planitherm Network from Saint-Gobain Glass was first launched in 2011 and it has been hugely successful in helping fabricators and installers to win more work and increase their profits. However, glass technology and the market have moved on and the Planitherm range of glass has also developed. The Planitherm Network was updated last year to reflect the important role that glass plays in delivering comfort in the home. The conversation is moving on from A-rated windows and energy efficient glass, with homeowners becoming more interested in other benefits such as enhanced security, reduced overheating, noise reduction and furniture fade protection, which can all be achieved by using the right type of glass.
With this in mind, the Planitherm range has been simplified into three options: Energy Standard for maximum energy efficiency; Comfort, which also offers enhanced security, noise reduction and furniture fade protection; and Comfort Plus for all these benefits plus solar control for sunny rooms. The three-option range simplifies the conversations yet highlights the fact that choosing the right type of glass will have a huge impact on the performance of your windows. Fabricators and installers who join the Planitherm Network are being given the opportunity to win more business by upselling to homeowners based on

the comfort benefits of different types of Planitherm glass. It’s all about using language that the consumer will understand so that they choose the right option for them. The Energy Standard option is ideal for standard windows in any room, but not ideal for south or west facing rooms with sunny aspects or large glazed areas. The Comfort package is particularly ideal for bedrooms, for a peaceful night’s sleep, or rooms overlooking busier streets where noise or security are a concern. The Comfort Plus option is designed for homes with large glazed areas, bi-fold doors, and south and west facing aspects, where overheating may be a concern. Gone are the days where one size fits all. The Planitherm high performance glazing range is designed for a more comfortable home. This means that the glass installed at the front of the house that faces onto a busy road, isn’t necessarily the same type of glass that is fitted into the bi-fold doors at the rear of a south-facing property.
“Gone are the days where one size fits all. The Planitherm high performance glazing range is designed for a more comfortable home. This means that the glass installed at the front of the house that faces onto a busy road, isn’t necessarily the same type of glass that is fitted into the bi-fold doors at the rear of a south-facing property.” The Planitherm Network provides fabricators and installers with a suite of tools and support materials that will help them to really understand the needs of the consumer and install the right glass for the right situation. A key benefit of the Planitherm Network is the wealth of information on the website and access to sales and marketing tools to help installers to start having different conversations with their customers and choose the right glass to meet their changing needs. New windows are still a high priority for homeowners but the benefits they expect windows to bring is changing. Security and noise control are just as important as energy efficiency. This delivers real profit, marketing differentiation and customer service opportunities for fabricators and installers to address these needs.
