THE GLAZING SUMMIT,
September 2019 crossword solution:

We had excellent speakers and a wide range of very knowledgeable participants in the series of debates with a couple of them particularly catching the imagination of the audience. As ever, the question about Industry consolidation and whether it’s the right time to exit, or buy got attention as did the debate on Innovation, smart-tech and the future of the industry. Interestingly, what should appear in my Inbox, right on cue, but a press release on a study conducted by the Smart Home League. Bearing in mind the Sli.do poll at the Glazing Summit on smart technology suggested that 76% of the audience reckoned that smart technology was the next big thing in our industry, seeing what the Smart Home League’s research had to say, intrigued me. This survey involved some 6,000 Europeans; 1,000 each from the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands and suggested that although Europeans are positive about a smart home, only 11% actually own products, currently. 66% find themselves bothered by time-consuming
household tasks. This includes turning down the heating, switching off lights and searching for keys, to more time-consuming chores like vacuum cleaning and picking up parcels from the post office – all of which can be supported by smart-home solutions. Interestingly, the afore mentioned 11% who own products was calculated by dismissing the ownership of smart speakers otherwise the figure would have been 29%! Of products owned the survey lists smart speakers at the top of the list (21%), followed by robotic vacuum cleaners (17%), smart thermostats (16.%), smart lighting (12%) with smart doorbells accounting for 6%. At the moment, smart products within fenestration are not figuring but what an opportunity awaits! Research and Markets data (2019) says the European smart home market is expected to grow from $22.8 billion (£18.3bn) in 2018 to $44bn by 2024. The UK is the second largest smart home market in Europe worth £900 million in 2017 (GfK Global figures), however, this rises significantly to £2.2bn when smart TVs are included. On a different subject, the fact that the Government has decided to put back the implementation of domestic reverse charge VAT for construction companies by a year has been praised by the Federation of Master Builders as ‘a victory for common sense’. Reverse charge VAT was due to come into force from 1st October 2019 but the Government has now decided to delay implementation until 1st October 2020 after a coalition of construction organisations, led by the FMB, wrote to the Government to point out the damaging impact this badlytimed policy would have on the sector. Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, commented: “The situation hasn’t been helped by the poor communication and guidance produced by HMRC. Despite the best efforts of construction trade associations to communicate the changes to their members, it’s concerning that so few employers have even heard of reverse charge VAT. Indeed, according to research by the FMB published in July, more than two-thirds had not heard of the VAT changes and of those who had, around the same number hadn’t prepared. What’s required now is for the Government and industry to work together to deliver a sector-wide communications campaign, which must include plain English guidance on the changes. We also want to work with the Government to deliver workshops aimed at construction employers, held in locations across the country, to explain what’s happening and why.”

SMART TECHNOLOGY AND REVERSE CHARGE VAT Functions that bring the industry together are always good news. I find them stimulating simply because of the opportunity to talk to a variety of people and meet new ones. It also makes me realise how large our industry is and the disciplines and products it covers, because there seems to be an endless supply of companies and people who, I for one, have never met! This was a case in point at the Glazing Summit held at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground. Not only were there new people to meet but an array of speakers and participants that might not be the first people you would expect to fill a stage. That is not meant in a derogatory way. In fact, it is a positive compliment. It would be very easy to continually wheel out well known names and faces on every occasion but wouldn’t that get boring? To listen to those gracing the stage at the Summit was to realise that we have a lot of very interesting people with knowledge and experience within the industry and we should never fear giving different people the opportunity to air their views.

COLD CALLING
GGF
DANNY WILLIAMS GGF GLASS CHARTER
‘COLD CALLING’ Each month our special correspondent Danny Williams* replies to a reader’s letter... It seems I am compelled to belong to associations such as FENSA and CERTASS. I resent this to a degree - is there any choice? NB of Lancashire Before we get into this let me correct you NB: Neither organisation is an ‘association’, despite many companies adding their logos to van sides as confirmation that they belong voluntarily to some sort of beneficent industry organisation. The fact is that FENSA and Certass are what are known as ‘Competent Persons Schemes’, two of seven organisations (the full list is: Blue Flame Certification, Certass, Certsure, FENSA, NAPIT, ASSURE, Stroma) certified by the Government and through which installers like you can self-certify the windows, doors, roof windows and roof lights that they install to comply with the Building Regulations. Put simply NB, you have to join one or the other of these if you want to operate within the law and in order to comply with the Building Regulations. In other words, don’t blame any of them for you being compelled to join; blame the government. This all came about when the Building Regulations changed significantly in 2002, when replacement windows first came under the control of Building Regs, with every installation from then on requiring planning approval. Faced with howls from local authorities up and down the country that they were already hard pressed to cope, the Government set up ‘self assessment’ within which installers like you could get planning approval by agreeing to certify that you had installed windows that performed to agreed standards, and installed competently. The idea is that whichever of the competent persons schemes you decide to join, would send
inspectors periodically to jump out on you from behind a bush and inspect one of your jobs to make sure you’re doing it properly. How often they actually carry out these inspections is questionable but the certification process generally works, and that’s the important bit from your point of view. You do have a choice of course: go and apply for a certificate of compliance from the local authority yourself, for each and every job you do. Believe me, the few quid that you pay to whichever scheme you belong to will soon become very good value indeed. There are now signs that some of these CPS organisations are coming out of their boxes and offering added value to their registered installers. They are doing so as competition, at least between FENSA and Certass, becomes more intense. For whilst they are Government backed none of them are Government funded, which means they have to attract more installers to attract more revenue. This means that you may benefit from an increasing number of add-ons that at least the leading schemes now offer. FENSA remains the largest of the schemes, with Certass following up behind and the biggest of the rest from what I can see. Interestingly, emphasising just how competitive it has become between the two largest schemes, FENSA has an excellent TV advertising campaign running until the end of the year to encourage homeowners to always insist upon a FENSA certificate and by inference of course, a FENSA registered installer. That is a serious benefit in my humble opinion. Actually, it’s about time too: these organisations have at last woken up to the fact that they really should be doing more for the installers that pay their fees, than simply issuing compliance certificates. Now it’s up to you and installers like you, to see what more you can squeeze out of them for your hard earned.

His activities include manufacturing a full range of windows and doors in PVC-U and aluminium, an IGU facility, retailing and commercial contracting.

AND HOW IT CAN HELP YOUR BUSINESS Phil Pinnington explains how being in the GGF GLASS Charter can benefit your business.
In our industry, it’s often expected for companies to meet or exceed a set of minimum standards, whether it’s in simple compliance with legislation, or in the case of an increasing number of construction projects, particular accreditations.
Phil Pinnington
Before going any further, it has to be made clear that legal compliance is the minimum any business should be working to, but at the same time, it shouldn’t be the only standard that a business maintains. Any business should strive to improve and become better. By striving for better Health and Safety standards, it’s inevitable for companies to find improvement in staff retention and their quality of work. Often when talking Health and Safety, one of the most common things that seem to hamper many business owners is the cost in time and manpower it takes to ensure good practice. It’s not unusual to hear comments such as “This will take months” or “I’ll have to employ someone to do this”, and an old favourite, “I can’t justify the cost of this”. These are often valid reasons, but if a company is in the position whereby winning that big contract relies on them having good infrastructure in place, then rather than give reasons not to invest resource, thought and commitment, they should aim to ensure the right procedures and practices are in place. GGF members have a Health and Safety resource, somewhere you can go to get competent advice, guidance, a sense check or perspective. We deal with many processors, installers, and fabricators, and as a neutral body, we share good practices to help businesses overcome unfamiliar situations. Likewise, the GGF seeks to support and acknowledges what good Health and Safety standards look like through the GGF GLASS Charter Scheme. It’s simple to navigate and offers a signposted route to improved Health and Safety. The key
driver – Improving Health and Safety is appropriate for your business. The GGF offers a free Health and Safety audit giving you the opportunity to have your systems reviewed and access information on how other Members have addressed particular challenges. Members who have been through the GLASS Charter process have, without exception, found it valuable and it has given them added confidence in applying Health and Safety practice appropriate to their business. VELUX® AND GUARDIAN WARM ROOF CONFIRMS FIRST-EVER PARTNERSHIP It is the first time VELUX GBI has partnered with a lightweight replacement roof brand in the UK. The agreement means that Guardian Warm Roof will only fit VELUX roof windows in their lightweight roof replacement systems. For Guardian, managing director Joe Kearney said: “Both VELUX and Guardian are in enviable positions as leaders in their specific areas of expertise; and synonymous with quality and innovation in the industry. “Guardian has been in the business for over 30 years. VELUX, globally, is a little distance ahead of us on 75 years. To be at the top of your game for that long is rare. Having announced the partnership, the size of the combined community of Guardian and VELUX installers is anticipated to continue to expand on its already significant numbers.
VELUX is the latest global brand to partner with Guardian. In 2018
Guardian Warm Roof ’s UK-wide network of approved installers has now grown to over 500 members. They are served by more than 24 trained and accredited fabricators who are, in turn, supported by Guardian’s own in-house technical engineering department. That level of knowledge, service and support means that over 300 UK homeowners receive new Guardian Warm Roofs installations in the UK every week. Guardian operations director Ross Darcy said: “This is a huge deal for the industry. Guardian was the first solid roof replacement system in the UK. Since then we have grown our range to include lightweight slates, shingles, and the Guardian Extension. Whatever our companies develop, at the heart of both Guardian and VELUX lies a relentless approach to innovate, and support independent testing and approvals. “This common purpose gives homeowners and installers complete peace of mind. APEER OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES SILKA SMOOTH DOOR RANGE, INCLUDING NEW SOLID VERSION Following a highly successful reveal at the 2019 FIT Show, Apeer has now officially launched its contemporary, Silka smooth skin composite door range, which now includes a stylish solid version that has been introduced following high demand from customers. The Silka range, which is manufactured to the same exacting standards as Apeer’s other market leading door and window products at its state-of-the art facility in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, is a collection of modern, smooth skin doors that comes with a choice of high-quality hardware and design options. Boasting the premium aesthetics of aluminium entrance doors, but at a more competitive price point, the Silka Collection will appeal to today’s increasingly style conscious consumers who want premium, design led products for their homes, and also matches perfectly with Apeer’s awardwinning ‘frameless’ Lumi window system,
especially when specified with the ‘all glass’ trim option. Apeer’s marketing manager, Linda Tomb, commented: “We had a fantastic response to the initial unveiling of the Silka range at the 2019 FIT Show, and the feedback we’ve had since then from customers has also been overwhelmingly positive. Over the summer months we’ve responded to increased demand for a solid version to be added to the Silka collection, and we’re proud to announce that this option is now available and ready to order.” The range, which is also available to order through Apeer’s online configurator, Doorbuilder, is comprised of eight door styles with a choice of six stainless steel, and two all glass glazing trims – unique to the Silka collection – plus four further bespoke design options that feature distinctive horizontal lines. Available in anthracite grey, light grey, black and cream, customers can also choose from black or anthracite grey should they specify the horizontal lines option, with white available as an option for the inside facing leaf. Linda concluded: “The demand for premium and contemporary window and door products continues to grow and with the new Silka collection, our existing and potential new customers are perfectly equipped to respond. Silka has the look and feel of a more expensive aluminium door, without the premium price tag, and is combined with the market leading thermal efficiency, security and design features that have become the hallmarks of all our doors at Apeer.” www.apeer.co.uk READER ENQUIRY NO: 1019/0009
PATIOMASTER NORTH WEST SEES STRONG DEMAND FOR TRIPLE-TRACK PATIO DOORS PatioMaster North West has reported strong sales growth for Triple-track patio doors in the last twelve months. Phillip Cresswell, Sales and Marketing Manager for the North West PatioMaster division, said: “The trend for wide apertures and large expanses of glass has never been stronger. We have seen a constant demand for Triple-track doors as installers take advantage of the growth in the market from homeowners looking to create the open-house feel that is so on trend and which a Triple-track patio door can deliver.” The Triple-track door offers 25% more open space compared to a conventional sliding door and has the option of having two or four sliding sashes that stack neatly behind each other when opened without encroaching on the inside or outside of the property. It has a maximum aperture of six metres, making it the perfect solution for bigger projects. There’s also the added benefit of having stainless steel tracks that mean the doors open in a smooth single motion and have fewer moving parts than on bifold doors. The PVC-U construction and the choice of 28 colours and finishes, including grained and flat textures, plus the choice of white, gold, brass, chrome, black or silver handles mean the doors sit comfortably in more UK homes.
Installation has been designed to be straightforward and simple. Features such as edge-located rollers mean easy adjustment and the door system works perfectly with standard cills and frame packers. There is also a mechanically jointed version for hard to access locations. Part of the expert PatioMaster network, PatioMaster North West is based in Lancashire and serves a wide area from North Wales through Merseyside and all the way up to Carlisle. Installers will find the North West operation a professional, knowledgeable and friendly team who pride themselves on the quality of the patio doors they manufacture. Phillip concludes: “As part of the PatioMaster network we have a commitment to providing bespoke, precision made patio doors. We offer a rapid order turnaround with superb technical and product support. And for where additional peace of mind is a requirement, we offer a Secured by Design accredited door option too. The Triple-track door is a superb product and there has been more consumer interest in this product than anything previously, so we are not surprised that the demand for this product continues to grow.” Tel: 0808 101 4143 www.patiomaster.co.uk READER ENQUIRY NO: 1019/0010
DISTINCTION DOORS SCORE SIX FOR OPACITY Market leader Distinction Doors has introduced two new obscure glass options to their offering, expanding their current obscure collection from four to six. ‘DD-Minst’ and ‘DD-Cont’ come as 24mm double glazed units with 6.8mm laminated glass and can be included as stylish modifications to selected door styles across all Distinction ranges. Over recent months, a number of Distinction’s Business Development Executives reported an increase in customers requesting new, on-trend opaque glass styles in order to help them satisfy similar requests they have been receiving from their own contractor customers. The addition of the DD-Minst and DD-Cont designs is a direct response to this growing demand for opaque glass styles. Marketing Manager Bethaney Larkman has been working to keep Distinction customers abreast of the changes: “We
8
always keep our trade customers promptly informed of all product developments, but given the popularity of the existing obscure options, this news is bound to be especially well received. DD-Minst features a soft, almost watery, look with shallow
depressions while DD-Cont is sharper and more intricate with a similar pattern to tree bark. We feel that we have successfully filled in the gaps that sat between the initial four obscure choices, two of which are plain (Satin and Clear).
Across all six of our opaque styles we can supply a variety of sizes and either toughened or laminated finishes.” It’s clear that Distinction pays close attention to the developing needs of the consumer market and is flexible enough to respond swiftly to any changes in demand. Unsurprisingly, the Distinction warehouses are primed with a full stock that’s ready and waiting to fulfil forthcoming orders. Bethaney added: “Years ago you would find the same, leafy pattern in most bathrooms across the country – we all know the one! Not only do people have so much more choice now, but it’s fashionable to bring opacity to front doors, not to mention the enhanced privacy and greater sense of security it brings.” www.distinctiondoors.co.uk READER ENQUIRY NO: 1019/0011

HERITAGE TRADE FRAMES INTRODUCES NXT-GEN RANGE FROM DISTINCTION Bolton based super fabricator Heritage Trade Frames has added the innovative nxt-gen range of composite doors from Distinction to its portfolio, a decision that forms part of the manufacturer’s ethos of providing its customers with the latest, cutting-edge products to ensure they continue to stay ahead of the competition. Phillip Cresswell, sales and marketing manager at Heritage Trade Frames, said: “We identified nxt-gen as an exciting new product that would provide our customers with an alluring alternative to standard cassette glazed doors. The range boasts a combination of great looking, highperformance doors that have been designed to provide a tremendously attractive product for the homeowner, with no detrimental effect to door set performance. “Working with the Distinction marketing team has also been a dream,” continued Phillip. “Their ‘can do’ attitude is inspiring and the work they produce, even when they’re occasionally presented with what
can sometimes be a sketchy brief, is just fantastic. In addition to first class showroom and marketing support to assist us with introducing nxt-gen, Distinction has also worked alongside us to introduce a paperless ordering system,” said Phillip. “This has provided us with a more efficient and cost-effective way for us and our customers to order products and to start making the most of the benefits that nxtgen has to offer.” With market leading aesthetics, glazing options and quality of finish, nxt-gen doors are available in six different styles to suit both traditional and modern properties. Homeowners can choose from six popular colours; black, white, blue, green, red, Distinction Chartwell and Distinction Anthracite and, thanks to nxt-gen’s thermally efficient core, high-performance comes as standard, with an option to upgrade to Secured by Design Specification if required.
TOADSTOOLS BY FORCE 8 This is the second Toadstool frame and door Force 8 have fabricated and installed in Sale, Greater Manchester. The first client had three companies attempting to manufacture this unusual frame, two said it could not be done on viewing it, and one gave up at the survey stage. The second client approached Force 8 after recommendation from the previous customer. The project was a slightly different design from the first, with French PVC doors rather than a single composite door. “In reality, there is no such thing as a standard arched frame, and the Toadstool designs are the perfect demonstration of this ”, comments Dennis Sumner, Managing
“We have partnered with Distinction for a long time now and have always been hugely impressed with the help we receive and how reliable the service has been,” Phillip concluded. “We understand that the composite door market is extremely competitive but we’re confident that with a product range as innovative and appealing as the one we provide on the back of Distinction’s range and service - we are ideally placed to help grow business substantially for both our existing and potential new customers.”
Director at Force 8. “We would be interested to see if there are any more houses around the country with a similar design, or a more unusual entrance”. The Force 8 arched frames are available in a VEKA Halo or a System 10 profile with a fully reinforced one-piece sash bend. Using this process allows for arched profiles to be produced up to 6500mm in length, which will ensure a stylish unblemished finish. Other companies bend their profile in sections and then weld them together to create the arch, which is not structurally as strong as a single length of profile. “Installation companies are missing out on a small but lucrative area of the market, for the simple reason it looks too difficult or their present fabricator does not have the resources to manufacture these unusual frames”, continues Dennis. “If your present fabricator is not equipped for arched or special shapes, we would welcome any design challenges from installers, not forgetting that we can also supply arched, or part arched composite doors to complete the project”. VISTA STRENGTHEN HOLD ON PANEL MARKET
Award-winning composite door manufacturer Vista has strengthened its hold on the panel market with the launch of a new brochure.
As they gear up for their 25th year in manufacturing, one of the longest standing infill panel manufacturers thought it was time to update their collection. The Vista PVCu panel collection has always set the bar on quality and some of the industry’s largest fabricators have been selling them for as long as Vista have made them. The new edition showcases Vista’s updated range perfectly. The new brochure reflects the current trend to have coloured PVcu panels and Vista have 13 foiled finishes in the catalogue. It is no longer just composite doors that can add a splash of colour to a home. Ian Smith, Vista’s Business Development and Marketing Manager, commented: “While the continued success of XtremeDoor has put us at the forefront of the composite door market, we’ve never taken our eyes off the manufacture of PVCu panels. They have been good to us over the years and our customers have been loyal in staying with us. “With a number of companies recently going into administration or stopping the production of panels there are few choices left in this market, we aim to continue the manufacture of panels until the demand stops but there is no sign of that just yet.”
As Vista are almost 25 years old they have already overseen their 10-year warranty twice over so choosing them as a supplier has been a wise choice for some.
NEW VIDEO SERIES COVERS ALL THE FIRE DOOR SAFETY BASICS
Earlier this year Vista launched the Contemporary Collection, two new ranges of composite doors that look and feel just like aluminium. Part of Vista’s existing XtremeDoor range, they have their own stand-alone brochure. “Our suite of brochures have all been designed with our customers in mind and our PVCu Panel Collection, Composite Door Collection and Contemporary Collection mean that we can offer the complete door package to any fabricator,” added Ian. Vista is currently producing 850 doors a week, with the capacity to produce over 1000, at its state-of-the-art, 50,000 sq. ft, factory. A series of short video interviews with fire door safety expert Hannah Mansell have been launched to mark Fire Door Safety Week which runs this week (23-29 September 2019). The videos give advice on each stage of the process to anyone buying or specifying fire doors, including architects, contractors and clients. Brief interviews cover topics such as the role of fire doors in building and life safety, the crucial difference between ‘doors’ and ‘doorsets’, the manufacturing standards that customers should expect and the importance of the fire door testing and certification regime. Hannah also gives tips on installation and maintenance of fire doors, as well as her personal views on innovation, the residents’ voice and the future of fire safety in the UK. Hannah is Group Technical Director at Masonite UK, one of the world’s leading door manufacturers serving both the residential and architectural markets. She is also chair of the Passive Fire Protection Forum and a trustee of the Children’s Burns Trust. Hannah Mansell says: “Fire safety is never far from the headlines at the moment, and the role of fire doors in protecting life and property keeps coming up as a major issue. Fire doors are a critical safety device, engineered as a system to protect building users and the emergency services too.
12
“However, the current official guidance on fire doors is still not as clear as it could be. So I think it is incredibly important for specifiers, contractors and everyone involved in building safety to build a close working relationship with their fire door manufacturer, and to make the most of the technical expertise we can offer.” A new fire door safety video will be published on Premdor’s YouTube channel and other social media accounts on each day of Fire Door Safety Week. Hannah joined Masonite earlier this year after five years as technical manager at the British Woodworking Federation. She has had a major influence on technical and safety policy throughout her 20-year career in the doors and joinery industry. Masonite currently serves approximately 9,000 customers in 64 countries, and is represented in the UK through the Premdor Crosby, Solidor, Door Stop International and National Hickman brands. Premdor offers an array of moulded, veneered and laminated fire doors in a variety of styles, colours and wood grain finishes. Fire doors are available in 30-minute (Fireshield FD30) and 60-minute (Firemaster FD60) options. Premdor’s fire rated doors and doorsets are compliant with all relevant British Standards and have been tested in accordance with BS 476: Part 22. www.premdor.co.uk/fire-doors

FACE TO FACE
The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
THIS MONTH: Lis Clarke BFRC Operations Director, GGF Group Glass News talks to BFRC’s Lis Clarke about the variety in her current job role, her love for clothes and dressmaking, and an ambition to run a marathon.
IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU Where were you born and live, currently? I was born in Sidcup and have lived in the south east ever since. I currently live in a small village on the outskirts of Maidstone but will soon be moving to a more central Maidstone location situated by the river Medway.
Your education and the subject or activity in which you excelled? I had a natural flare for economics and business subjects whilst I was at school. It was because of this ability, and the fact that I also enjoyed it so much, that I then decided to go on to study economics at University of Surrey.
Your favourite sports or interests? I have a love for nature so I am often taking long weekends in the Kent area to enjoy the countryside.
Your biggest regret in life? I don’t have any big regrets in life, but I do wish I continued learning German, and perhaps another language.
Someone or something that inspires you? For me, I am inspired by many people I have met throughout my life, including teachers, work colleagues and family. I try to apply every positive and inspiring behaviour learned from them to help to achieve my personal goals and develop my leadership skills. I’m particularly inspired by
optimism and those that make it contagious for others to catch.
The temptation you can’t resist? I have three overflowing wardrobes, so I guess this indicates I have a weakness for clothes and shoes!
YOUR CAREER When and how did you join this industry? I initially had a work experience placement with GGF whilst at secondary school, and then by chance I was offered a role in BFRC following graduation from university. The rest, as they say, is history!
The job you do in 25 words?
AND YOUR FUTURE
I get involved in all aspects of BFRC including ops, technical, marketing, and play a key role in driving the development of BFRC ratings.
What you would like to do if you weren’t in the industry? Your greatest achievement? I’m only 30 years old so I hope there will be more achievements and milestones to come, however to date I’m particularly proud of becoming a Director of BFRC and being fortunate enough to work with such a fantastic team.
The mistake you’d like to correct? Whilst there may be things I wish I could change, mistakes shape who you are so I don’t have any
I like the idea of doing something creative, such as dressmaking or tailoring, but only if I was able to become skilled enough. To do that kind of job well is a fine art.
big regret or mistakes I would be compelled to change.
The talent you would like to enhance? According to the other members of the BFRC team it would be my singing, however I disagree! Over the last couple years, I have learnt to make blankets, cushions, quilts and other soft furnishings in my spare time. One day I would like to learn to make my own clothes, but so far I have only managed small repairs and alterations.
A particular ambition? This year I completed my first 10k race, but a long term ambition would be to run a marathon.
The way you want to be remembered? I would like to be remembered as someone who is kind, loving, genuine and compassionate, and has a few laughs too.
If you would like to appear in ‘Face to Face’, or would like to nominate someone else to be featured, simply email chris@glassnews.co.uk. 14

ADMINBASE GETS ‘FITTER’ Over a period of 20 years Ab Initio’s AdminBase has become the UK’s most popular management system for UK window and door installers. With users including small single user operations to large installers putting in hundreds of frames per week, the system’s comprehensive, thorough functionality, remains remarkably easy and intuitive to use which is why it boasts more than 3000 users throughout the UK, employed by hundreds of companies. In the most thorough upgrade in its history AdminBase has now been extended into the field through a launch of mobile apps for each of sales, survey, installation and remedial services. Utilising the latest mobile computing technology, AdminBase now allows these key tasks to be managed and completed in the customer’s home, with all inputs sent automatically into the central system. Indecipherable scrawls on scraps of paper are a thing of the past with entries made using tablet computers, to send data directly into the office-based system for instant updates and processing. AdminBase was the brainchild of Rhonda Ridge who, whilst working as the financial
controller at a window installation company in the late ‘Nineties, realised that a gap existed for a ‘joined up’ management system designed specifically for installation companies. Quite simply, she set about creating one and so AdminBase was born, developed continuously ever since. But despite having thousands of users throughout the UK, Rhonda says even some larger installation companies still use the most basic methods: “Of course things have improved but I still hear stories of orders being faxed in to the office, or notes being recorded on manual, one-finger-typed forms. But these days there is no excuse for retail installation companies risking the left hand (sales person) not knowing what the right hand (surveyor, fitter) is doing, with everyone in between trying to pull together the details into a single record. The potential for errors and financial loss is incredible!” AdminBase has been developed since its launch through continuous input from its users. Each stage of the process, from marketing through to remedial work and sign off is covered by the system, allowing close control of every function. Now, advances in mobile computing technology have allowed Rhonda to extend AdminBase into the front line, to the sales people, surveyors, installers and remedial engineers, through tablet-based apps.
“Our new apps eliminate duplication and errors caused by transcribing hand-written notes in to spreadsheets, word documents, production and accounts systems; they reduce time, cost and the potential for mistakes at every stage,” explained Rhonda, with the passion and intensity that continues to drive the continuous development of AdminBase even after two decades. And, she says, using the new apps is so simple there is no excuse for so called ‘technophobes’ to use computer illiteracy as a reason for not upping their game: “There are very few people that remain unfamiliar with tablet computers, even if they are uncomfortable with sitting in front of a conventional machine,” explained Rhonda. “So in developing the apps we have worked hard to ensure users are taken through each stage of the relevant process, with prompts that mean entry of the information is actually simpler than writing the information down on a piece of paper.” Rhonda says that those already using AdminBase are responding positively to the introduction of the new apps: ‘For most of our existing users the response has been ‘at last!’. In fact the development of the mobile apps has been driven by them, because they see the benefit of having their canvassers, sales people, surveyors, installers and remedial engineers connected to head office, and of being able to track sales and installations almost by the minute.” Rhonda believes that the availability of the apps will now bring many new users to AdminBase: “The biggest growth in Internet use in recent years has been through mobile devices. Many installers – and not just single operators – will be comfortable using portable apps and we believe that ours will appeal to them and allow them to see the benefits of the full system.” Rhonda also says that pricing and installation have been thoroughly developed
16
Installation management system goes mobile with new sales, survey, fitting and service apps
in recent years: “There is no upfront capital commitment to using AdminBase. We charge a monthly fee per user that also allows for seamless expansion as the company grows. And in all of my years in this industry, carrying out thousands of installations, not one single day’s business has been lost in installing a system.” Rhonda says that the latest mobile technology has now allowed the introduction of the system she always dreamed of: “Of course we always wanted to include on-site functions into AdminBase, and technology has now allowed us to fulfil that dream. This is the most comprehensive fenestration installer management system in the world and it will revolutionise the sales and installation process where it counts most – with customers in their own homes.” For more information go to: www.abinitiosoftware.co.uk READER ENQUIRY NO: 1019/0023

HAFFNER MURAT TO SUPPLY FOM INDUSTRIE ALUMINIUM FABRICATION MACHINERY
FASTER ALUMINIUM FABRICATION WITH STELLAR FROM EPWIN WINDOW SYSTEMS Stellar, the new aluminium window and door system from Epwin Window Systems, is packed with innovative developments that set new standards for the aluminium industry. For fabricators, one of the most important developments is that it’s 20% faster to fabricate. Paul Booth, Design Director, Aluminium Products, Epwin Group Plc, who led the team that developed Stellar, said: “There are all kinds of operation efficiencies fabricators can look at to speed up fabrication times and help reduce material costs. But Stellar has been designed to be faster to fabricate in the first place. It gives fabricators an extraordinary competitive advantage.” Stellar delivers such impressive efficiency gains thanks to several innovative features. The biggest gain is from the fact it’s a pre-gasketed system. Stellar also uses a patent-pending knock-in bead system that results in faster, easier glazing too. Other innovations include fast-fit espags, chevrons and corner ties are only required on the flush sash and all products have direct
fix hardware. Furthermore, stock levels are easier to manage as many parts are consistent across the entire suite. As well as delivering faster fabrication, Stellar brings further benefits to fabricators as it’s a truly adaptable system. For example, the system allows for mechanical joint fabrication and is a perfect fit with PVC-U cills too. Paul said: “The joy of Stellar was that our brief was to go back to the drawing board and develop a system that delivered stateof-the-art design without compromise. We involved fabricators in the development process to ensure we designed a system that gave them what they needed. The feedback we’ve had since the launch shows that we have more than succeeded in our aim.”
Leading machinery experts Haffner Murat has just announced it will be supplying Fom Industrie aluminium fabrication machinery. Dave Thomas, Haffner Murat’s Managing Director, said: “Fom Industrie offers the state-of-the-art in aluminium automation machinery. By working with Fom, we’ll be able to offer even more choice to fabricators looking to make the most of the growing opportunities in aluminium.”
It is the sole UK agent of Haffner Murat Machinery, which designs innovative and high quality engineered products at competitive industry prices. It is also the UK’s official agent for the Italian range of ITALMAC aluminium fabrication machinery, which combines the latest technology with skilled engineering. And alongside its new machinery ranges, Haffner Murat also offers high quality reconditioned machinery.
Italy’s Fom Industrie is part of the worldwide FomGroup and has an outstanding product offering. Dave commented: “The scale of Fom means they are able to keep a wide range of machines in stock at any one time. Furthermore, there’s often a rapid deployment time, so customers can be up and running quickly. The technical support on offer is also exceptional – Fom invests in regular training and updates for its staff – and it shows.”
Finance packages (subject to status) and part exchanges are available to help fabricators invest for the future of their business.
Fom Industrie machinery complements an already impressive machinery line up from Haffner Murat.
Haffner Murat is renowned as the company with the expertise and experience fabricators turn to when they want to bring increased efficiency and output to their manufacturing business. The company has a team of seven service engineers with experience of the Fom Industrie machinery range to support their growing customer base. Tel: 01785 222421 www.haffnermurat.com
Stellar has attracted a great deal of interest thanks to its market-first Fully Flush Casement Window, which has flush lines inside and out, and the Flush Casement Window that offers up to 12% more glass area. But as the faster fabrication reveals, this is just the start of the Stellar story. It truly is the future of aluminium windows and doors. UK MANUFACTURING
INVESTMENT
With Britain’s manufacturing industry reporting all-time lows in outlays amidst Brexit uncertainly, Yale is bucking the trend by investing heavily in its UK manufacturing offering. According to a survey by industry trade body EEF, investment by UK manufacturers in new plant and machinery slowed to 6.5% of turnover from 7.5% in 2016. This is a trend that has continued into 2019, with uncertainty over the UK’s exit from the EU holding back planned investment in many cases. Yale Door and Window Solutions, however, continues to invest in UK manufacturing to the benefit of its customers. The company has continued to invest in automation at both its Willenhall and Cheltenham sites, allowing it to bring product manufacturing back to the UK from overseas. The move brings with it the close quality control measures that Yale prides itself on. With both sites accredited to EN ISO 9001:2015 for quality management, the sites will contribute to the rising quality standards in UK industry. Yale is also in the process of expanding its warehouse to 254,008 ft2, approximately four times the size of the previous building, and moving it to a more UK central location to help provide best-inclass services, all in time for winter 2019. As well as these investments, Yale is also introducing a new CRM system across

the business that will enhance customer service, communications and account management, improving the customer experience.
The CRM system will put customer experience at the heart of the business, helping to maintain strong relationships with both new and existing customers. With a single client focus throughout all units, each new offer, product and service will be immediately visible and available. The automated system will also ensure a greater alignment in project and trade sales processes. Paul Atkinson, Sales and Commercial Director of Yale Door and Window Solutions, comments: “We have always been passionate about maintaining and building on a UK manufacturing base, especially with the current uncertainty surrounding Britain’s exit from the EU. There are multiple benefits to manufacturing in the UK; being closer to the market we operate in means we are able to respond to customer requirements and fluctuations much quicker. “There are also research and development benefits for our customers when it comes to new products. For example, we recently announced that we were upgrading to stainless steel on all of our multipoint lock faceplates as standard, with the whole manufacturing process taking place solely at our Midlands head office. “We also see a benefit in supporting the local and UK economy; by maintaining and growing manufacturing at our Willenhall and Cheltenham sites we believe this will help contribute to the UK job market. In a similar vein, Yale is proud to be an official member of Made in Britain, which aims to bring together the entire British manufacturing community.” For more information on Yale Door and Window Solutions, please visit www.yaledoorandwindowsolutions.co.uk. LOCKWOOD CELEBRATE 21 YEARS WITH THEIR FIRST CUSTOMER Lockwood Windows have been established since 1998 and have been a loyal KÖMMERLING fabricator right from day one. Earlier this year they were approached by one of their very first customers with a request for a new front window and high security entrance door. Karen Lowther purchased a window and a panel door from Lockwood Windows right back in 1998 and although the kitchen window and front door are still in perfect working order, she decided it was time for an upgrade. Karen got back in touch with Lockwood Windows at the beginning of 2019 and was impressed to see the wide range of window
and door styles, colours and options that have been added to their product range in recent years. After careful consideration the PVC panel door was replaced by a Chartwell Green, Flint style composite door with a KÖMMERLING door frame to complement the Yorkshire stone house perfectly. The window and door that were taken out are now back at Lockwood Windows as a display, showing the longevity of modern PVCu and the excellent product engineering in window and door systems from KÖMMERLING. Richard Pogson, managing director of Lockwood Windows commented: ‘It seemed
apt that one of our first ever customers, Mrs Lowther, would come back to us after 21 years for an upgrade and it’s appreciated that so many people, friends and their families keep on coming back to us. We’ve no doubt that the new door and window should also last over 20 years much like the original ones we’ve carefully taken out.’ For further information on Lockwood Windows please visit www. lockwoodwindows.co.uk. TV CAMPAIGN REAPS HUGE TUFFX BALUSTRADE BRINGS WOW FACTOR TO STUNNING CHELTENHAM HOME REWARDS FOR FENSA APPROVED INSTALLERS FENSA, the UK’s largest government-authorised compliance scheme for replacement windows and doors, is reporting the first six months of its prolonged TV ad campaign that launched in March as “far exceeding expectations” and that FENSA Approved Installers are reaping the benefits. “It’s fantastic to see the campaign performing beyond our high expectations. We aimed to improve standards across the industry and drive awareness of the FENSA brand” stated Anda Gregory, Managing Director of FENSA, “What we are seeing as so far are homeowners making the FENSA certificate part of the purchasing process. It is a very positive result to see the TV campaign driving business to our community of Approved Installers via the FENSA website.”
The TV campaign is the first of its kind in the industry and the impressive statistics confirm why homeowner awareness of FENSA has never been higher. The recent FENSA sponsorship on TV channel Dave, and their ‘Weekends on Dave’ comedy programming, provided 6 separate ad ‘idents’ shown over the course of 11 weekends and were seen over 170 million times. Backed up by the main TV ad and a series of online marketing campaigns, the FENSA brand has been seen over 225 million times over the past six months. Further analysis revealed that in addition to an increase in installer searches, homeowners made 412,000 searches through the FENSA website for information regarding FENSA Certificates, factors that are directly attributable, explained Anda, to the TV
campaign. “The statistics are impressive: The TV ad has been seen by 56% of the UK population to date and each person has seen one of our ads an average of 8 times. With the advertisement gaining more recognition throughout the year, and it running until December, our Approved Installers have good reason to believe that knowledge of the FENSA certificate will continue to build.” FENSA Director of Membership Chris Beedel is also optimistic: “With consumer awareness of FENSA at an all-time high, there has never been a better time for installers to join. Off the back of the advertising campaign the value of being a FENSA Approved Installer is now clearer than ever with our brand reputation and website driving business towards the FENSA community.”
Safety glass specialist, TuffX, has supplied 50m2 of laminated toughened glass to a prestigious residential property, situated in the heart of Cheltenham’s picturesque countryside. The owners of the property had specified a bespoke glass balustrade in order to maximise the potential of an elevated terrace at the rear of the building – one that commands outstanding views over the surrounding area. The brief for the balustrade, which extends the entire length of the terrace as well as to a flight of steps leading up from a garden area, was twofold – as an important part of the building’s overall aesthetics, it of course had to be visually appealing, while at the same time it also had to perform to strict structural and safety requirements in order to ensure the well-being of occupants. As a result, and thanks to the reputation of both its market leading products, and its outstanding customer service, TuffX was approached to supply a total of 28 toughened and laminated panels, using 21.5mm glass, including polished edges and radius corners complete with 25mm diameter holes.
Graham Price, TuffX managing director, commented: “This project is a perfect demonstration of how the addition of our laminated and toughened glass balustrades can improve an already very desirable property. We are seeing a growth in demand for our safety glass offering, particularly in impressive residential buildings such as this, as its strength and performance means that it is becoming increasingly popular with both homeowners and architects who want a visually appealing yet structurally sound solution to enhancing outside spaces.” TuffX, which has recently announced an additional £500m investment in its facilities following further expansion earlier this year, has developed an unrivalled reputation for its high-performance glass, which is suitable for both domestic and commercial applications. The company supplies its toughened and laminated safety glass in a range of thicknesses, from 11.5mm to 39mm, and can deliver nationwide from its 75,000ft2 facility in Merseyside. www.tuffxglass.co.uk READER ENQUIRY NO: 1019/0032

INVESTMENT AND INTEGRATION TRANSFORMS GLAZERITE EAST
QUICKSLIDE ROLLS OUT DOUBLE SHIFT PATTERNS IN RESPONSE TO HIGH DEMAND West Yorkshire based fabricator, Quickslide, has announced that it has rolled out double shift patterns throughout its factories, a move that is designed to further improve its service offering, as well as ensure it is best placed to cater for a significant upturn in sales orders for all its market leading products. Quickslide, which manufactures a complete range of PVC-U and aluminium windows and doors, first introduced a double shift working pattern in January 2019 due to high demand for its authentic, high-performance heritage style vertical sliders. The company reports that this has proved to be highly successful and has enabled it to further enhance its service to trade partners by offering improved lead times, even during particularly busy periods. And now that the increased vertical slider production has proven to be so beneficial, Quickslide has expanded the option of double shift patterns to both its aluminium and PVC-U casement facilities, giving the company the ability to uplift capacity – factory wide – as and when it is required. Tom Swallow, Sales & Marketing Director
commented: “With a double shift pattern operating in our vertical slider facility, we were able to offer a low cost three-day express lead time on a selection of our VS products even during our busy summer months. This allowed us not only to sustain a competitive advantage within the wider industry, but also means that we are now well prepared for periods of high-volume output later in the year as well. “By extending the option of double shifts to our other factories, we are now also very well positioned to respond to the demand for our aluminium offering, which has been bolstered by the ongoing upturn in popularity for aluminium products. Furthermore, should the need arise, we can now significantly increase the output of our new range of Deceuninck PVC-U products that were introduced earlier this year, and which include the 2800 Storm Sash casement windows and doors, Slider 24+ sliding patio doors and G-Award winning Heritage flush sash windows and doors.” www.quickslide.co.uk READER ENQUIRY NO: 1019/0034
Having recently announced plans for a £1m investment boost, the Glazerite UK Group Ltd has completed the second phase of its programme, this time at its Glazerite East plant. As part of plans to strengthen its performance for installers, the VEKA fabricator has welcomed new equipment at the Peterborough-based plant, which fabricates products from the Halo profile systems range. Following the investment, which has included the installation of a brand new Haffner SMR 5 head inline welding machine, the site’s capacity is set to significantly increase, with the ability to fabricate 800 frames per week by the end of this year. Glazerite acquired the site in February 2016 and has completely transformed its technical capabilities, aligning it with its other facilities in Bolton and Wellingborough. The results have been huge, with Glazerite East hugely increasing its output, and shortening its lead-time from three weeks to just five days. Glazerite East has also recently installed a £100k Stuga cutting and machining centre, which was relocated from the group’s Northwest division, as well as four new vertical tables, four door line tables, and a corner cleaner. With the addition of the new machinery, the plant has been completely reconfigured to optimise efficiencies and improve performance across all areas. Matthew Thomas, Managing Director of Glazerite East, explains: “The new equipment is part of a major overhaul of the site’s capabilities, which has also seen
improvements to the flow of the plant and freed up space for frame storage. The 5 head Haffner can weld two frames simultaneously, something we weren’t able to do before, and it has made set up time and cycle times quicker and much more efficient. “Since Glazerite took over the site three years ago, our team has been working hard to improve our lead times and output. We’ve already upped production from 350 to 600 frames per week, and cut lead times of standard products to just five days, in alignment with the rest of Glazerite.” Matthew adds: “The team here has undergone some major changes to work processes, and they’ve truly embraced the adoption of technology, moving from manual processes to automation on the shop floor. It’s been a big but important culture change, and with additional training and support, we’re seeing a real difference in how our team approach their work.” Next on the agenda for the 45-strong Glazerite East workforce is the soon-to-belaunched mechanical jointed version of the Halo Flush Sash, following an increase in demand from consumers looking for more authentic-looking windows. Matthew adds: “Glazerite East has a bright future, and with the recent investment we’re looking forward to increased production and enhancing our relationships with installers.” www.glazerite.co.uk READER ENQUIRY NO: 1019/0035

HOW MECHANICAL JOINTS CAN
IMPROVE THE FACE OF UPVC
As the uPVC window market grows, consumers are becoming more conscious about their range of choices, and are increasingly opting for realistic uPVC alternatives over timber. Clare Higgins, Product Manager at REHAU, discusses how the trade needs to give a wider appreciation of the use of mechanical joints in uPVC and how it can be beneficial to both the fabricator and consumer. From looking at market trends, uPVC flush fit windows are clearly growing in popularity compared to their timber counterparts. Yet with the ability to create a realistic timber-look frame, there is a higher demand than ever for fabricators to provide high-quality uPVC windows. Considering that uPVC alternatives can be matched to any style of building, and can cut down the end users’ overall costs, those who can provide high-performing solution with aesthetic appeal will be well-placed for success. Furthermore, despite the increased demand for a cost-effective alternative, product quality cannot be compromised. Consumers still expect a high-quality solution, right down to the finer details. In their pursuit for the perfect window, they will even go as far as assessing how the sash is jointed. As a result, fabricators and installers will need to consider the best jointing solutions for individual projects, to both suit a property’s look and create a long-lasting window of superior quality.
THE FINER DETAILS Consumers expect high durability in their windows with little-or-no maintenance. The method used to fabricate the joints in a window is essential for determining how well it will perform in the long run. Having tightly sealed joints will provide adequate protection from the elements, such as wind and rain, ensuring good insulation for the property. The methods involved in the manufacturing and installation of timber frames go hand in hand with traditional window joinery techniques. Because of this, many older timber window systems, installed before uPVC arrived in the window market, tend to have traditional mechanical joints
24
in place. It is this type of joint that gives the traditional timber-frame window its identifiable look, and fabricators and installers who can replicate this look with uPVC can expect to see the benefits with increased sales.
THE EVOLUTION OF UPVC It is a common assumption that plastic frames are lower in quality compared to the more traditional materials. However, with the evolution of durable, high-quality uPVC, it is now possible to easily disprove this myth and assure customers that this is not the case. Reports suggest that the majority of fabricators choose to weld their flush sashes, which, while is cost-effective in the short term, ultimately creates a less authenticlooking timber alternative. As uPVC gained popularity in the market, the traditional mechanical joints method was increasingly considered too costly and time-consuming. This resulted in fabricators opting for alternative ways of jointing, such as welding the mullions and transoms together. A welding joint comparatively, is considered much easier to manufacture and it costs less to produce, but it will not look as authentic
as timber alternatives. And, as consumers become increasingly aware of what is available to them, this is a risk the trade cannot afford to take.
THE IMPORTANCE OF AUTHENTICITY It is clear to see that the jointing option chosen for the window is crucial to its overall look. The mechanical joint option not only creates a strong, durable window, but fully enhances it for complete authenticity. REHAU’s Rio Flush Fit Window, for example, gives fabricators the opportunity to offer a product to their customer that fits with any aesthetic for very little additional installation work, using either mechanical joint blocks or a MechWeld joint solution. Many well-established window companies offer products that work with both mechanical and welded joints. This provides full flexibility over the choice of window joints to meet a project’s requirements. The MechWeld joint, for example, offers the appearance of mechanical-style timber joints on the outside with a fully welded detail inside. Modern uPVC window systems, such as the Rio Flush Fit, allow fabricators to replicate the finer details of a
traditional timber flush fit window through a range of jointing solutions that suit different property styles.
LOOKING AHEAD Going forward, in order to achieve a perfect likeness to timber frame windows, we must consider investing time into using a mechanical joint within the manufacturing process. uPVC technology has evolved impressively and, through careful consideration of the finer details such as jointing options, can be the go-to option as a cost-effective yet high quality timber window alternative. To fully take advantage of the benefits of uPVC, fabricators need to look towards using mechanical joints alongside welded joints in uPVC flush sash windows. Not only does it provide a cost-effective but durable solution, it gives consumers an aesthetically pleasing product that is suitable for a wide variety of building projects. Delta Point, the 28,500sqm former BT office building in Croydon, has been completely overhauled as part of its transformation into 404 apartments and commercial units. Work started on complete glazing refurbishment coupled with refurbishing and refinishing the entire cladding façade.
An added complication was the fact that, with the building changing use from Commercial to Residential, the paint needed to achieve class 0 on spread of flame in accordance with BS 476. In order to ensure conformity and correct certification, Structura’s bespoke colour formulation was tested at Exova Warrington Fire to make sure it was fully compliant.

It can be tough to balance traditional Victorian style with high-performing solutions – for the recent refurbishment of a large stone period home, this was exactly what was required. The Victorian property is located in the town of Minchinhampton, central Gloucestershire, and had specialist needs during its renovation, particularly when it came to the windows and doors. In order to achieve a traditional appearance with modern performance the owners called on specialist fabricator Roseview and window and door specialist Glassier Window Systems Limited to provide expert advice and high-quality products that fit in with their requirements. Glassier is a well-established company in the heart of Worcestershire. Since its inception in 1982 they have grown to become leaders in the supply of windows, doors, conservatories and glazed extensions throughout Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Warwickshire, winning a variety of nationally recognised awards along the way. At the inception of the project last year, Colin Cole – the homeowner – contacted Roseview with a special request to specify high-quality and easy-to-maintain windows that would complement the traditional aesthetics and Victorian feel of their family home. Colin was looking for alternatives that combined the heritage of the building and the conveniences of modern construction and specifically requested Roseview’s Ultimate Rose vertical slider manufactured
using REHAU heritage profiles which seemed like the perfect choice.
so, we did not hesitate to recommend the product for this refurbishment project.”
REHAU’s popular Heritage Vertically Sliding Sash profiles were enhanced by Roseview to manufacture the Ultimate Rose sash window. It has been designed to replicate the charm and character of a timber sash window and with slim timber-like profiles and Roseview’s 35mm meeting rail, the window’s style and authenticity was the perfect answer to the requirements of Minchinhampton.
The Ultimate Rose has been specifically designed to be the most authentic PVC-u sash window that also boasts supreme modern features and benefits. Its ‘A’ rated energy efficiency comes as standard with the product along with its enhanced security and excellent acoustic performance, helping to block out external noise. This lends perfectly to what the owners were looking for during the refurbishment at Minchinhampton.
Howard Nicholls, Managing Director at Glassier, said: “The owners were on the lookout for windows that incorporated all the desirable traditional features of a timber sash window, yet with all the additional benefits and conveniences of modern PVC-U. On conducting their own research before approaching us, they found the Ultimate Rose using REHAU’s Vertically Sliding Sash Window profiles perfectly met with their requirements and we completely agreed. “Glassier has been using REHAU profiles for several years now and the quality and finish of all the products is second to none. The Vertically Sliding Sash Window complements traditional timber windows and is an ideal modern replacement to heritage properties across the country. They are so good that they are accepted by local Conservation officers. “The system includes all the classic detailing found in period sash windows, including a deep bottom rail, slim sashes for improved sightlines and an optional Astragal Georgian bar. It would take an expert to spot that it is PVC-u and
Richard Burrells, Director at Roseview Windows said: “Colin Cole was looking for the most authentic and maintenance-free windows that would fit in and complement the style of their Victorian property. Colin is himself a developer and recently came across our popular Ultimate Rose windows and fell in love with its authenticity. We put him in touch with our local Approved Installer Glassier and have had fantastic feedback from the customer and am sure they will be able to reap the benefits of the product for years to come.” The installation simply makes the windows look as though they have been decorated with nothing really changed. Furthermore, the REHAU Heritage window system has been developed following extensive consultation with conservation bodies and housing associations. Kevin O'Neil, Commercial Manager for REHAU, said: “We are very excited that our Heritage Vertical Sliding profiles were selected for this refurbishment and we are confident that it meets all the requirements of the building. The Ultimate Rose has been manufactured with authenticity in mind, but not at the cost of modern features and benefits. It is easy to maintain making it the ideal choice for this family home.” READER ENQUIRY NO: 1019/0042

IT’S NOT VEKA’S WEBSITE, IT’S YOURS VEKA UK has designed and built an entirely new website with its customers at heart. Marketing Director Dawn Stockell says: “It may well say VEKA in the URL, but this site really belongs to customers (both internal and external, existing and potential). Using visitor data from our old site and drawing from digital best practice learnings; we developed a site that is easy to navigate, supports an array of visitor types and is able to answer their questions and provide all relevant information. “Recognised as a knowledgeable, trusted and reliable brand in the industry, we wanted to ensure the new site reflected this properly, providing clear information in the most straightforward way. In an increasingly digital age, we want visitors to have clear and easy access to everything they require when they need it most, even outside office hours. “We’ve simplified the access to VEKA documentation, brochures and technical downloads by adding an intuitive filter
functionality so they are readily available to anyone that needs them, rather than being ‘tucked away’ in a ‘customers only’ area. We know that hardworking fabricators and specifiers don’t keep a ‘9 to 5’ day, so our website gives 24 hour access to all the relevant resources, presented in such a way that they can be downloaded and used immediately with absolute confidence. “For the new site, we also created a dedicated downloads area - with a free text search facility and simple-to-use filters - which means it takes just moments to access the information you need. Thanks to the simple navigation, the customer journey through the site is now much more direct, making it clear for individuals from all industry sectors to know exactly where to go. “One of the more innovative aspects of the new design is the intuitive dashboard area. Registering for the site allows you to personalise your dashboard by saving your favourite documents for quick access, as well as selecting your brand and product preferences for suggested items.
GGF ANNUAL REPORT REFLECTS STRENGTH AND STABILITY The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) has released its Annual Report 2019 reporting on the activity and performance of the Federation for the year ending 31st December 2018. The report covers a year that saw the GGF gain a record 67 new members during a year of change, influence and preparation as the regulations and standards came under Government scrutiny due to the inquiry in the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy and the UK’s pending exit from the European Union. The GGF’s increased support for consumerfacing members was evident with MyGlazing.com achieving record audience numbers of over 200,000 homeowners. In addition, the report also highlighted the outstanding background work of the GGF technical team and the ongoing political activity the Federation carried out during the period. The accounts yet again showed the organisation’s formidable financial strength and stability. John Agnew, GGF President
commented, “Following a difficult transitional year, the GGF has ensured it maintains its position as the leading trade organisation in the industry.” Steve Rice, GGF Managing Director added, “It’s clear, the GGF’s core services are continuously benefiting our Members regardless of their size, position, sector and status. With the shifting political landscape, and uncertain economic and regulatory climate, we will continue to support our Members to help them cope with the changes ahead.” To access the GGF Annual Report please visit the GGF website: https://www.ggf.org. uk/publications/annual-reports/

HELPING CUSTOMERS GROW,
THE FREEFOAM WAY
The last twelve months have seen a very turbulent time, politically and economically. With the EU leave date just around the corner at the time of writing - but who knows if things will have changed by the time you read this – and all the uncertainty that is predicted to transpire, it is widely reported that business owners have ‘battened down the hatches’, held off on investment and are riding out the storm.
But not at Freefoam! We felt that the time was right to commission and deliver a broad PR and digital campaign called ‘Helping Customers Grow’. The aims of the programme are to shine a light on the roofline market and its supply chain, to showcase all areas of our business and to illustrate how, as manufacturers, we consistently deliver products and services to help our customers grow.
Working with award winning agency MRA Marketing and digital agency Mind Made, we have created a wide range of high quality, innovative material for print and digital channels to bring our story to life. From thought provoking articles, to customer interviews, installer stories, and video testimonials the message has been delivered across the roofline and glazing press and target audiences across all digital and social channels.
Colin St John, Commercial Director “We know that, although the outlook is uncertain, we are a strong and secure company able to withstand the rigours of the market. With a robust infrastructure and nearly 30 years of delivering to our customers we have a strong and consistent story to tell. “Indeed it’s been incredibly inspiring to hear throughout this programme our customers’ stories of success and to know that we have played an integral part in that development.” Video to accompany release here: https://youtu.be/gvD8xxJ28uU

ARE YOUR JOINTS FAILING YOU?
Alan Burgess, one of the innovators behind Timberweld®, shows the industry exactly what happens if butt joints (typically used on premium flush sashes) are open-ended with a video on www.timberweld.co.uk and @Timberweld. “Many mechanical butt joints are open-ended,” explains Alan, “allowing rainwater, draughts and even flies in! In our video, a handkerchief is passed through the open joint, showing just how big the gap can be. This isn’t what homeowners expect – especially as they pay more for details like butt joints that replicate the features found on timber originals.” In recent years, the market for premium (or even upper middle) windows that mimic traditional timber details has exploded. Property-rich homeowners looking to make valueenhancing improvements want quality products that look polished and refined – and they will pay more for the look they love. “But windows must perform as well as they look,” adds Alan. “Timberweld, for example, is a patented method of jointing that makes perfect corners and creates a butt-joint effect on the outside and inside of a window. Fabricating windows or doors in this way means the corners are extremely strong and completely sealed. “Our video highlights how important a perfect butt joint is. It may sound superficial, but when it comes to replacing windows and doors, today’s homeowners are obsessed with looks. Lots of companies can create a butt joint effect, but the Timberweld method of construction gives a perfect corner which is strong, draught/water-tight, and durable. Watch our video on www.timberweld.co.uk and see for yourself!” Handkerchief passing through an open ended butt joint

Its UK and Export Customers were given a short Customer Satisfaction Survey requesting a rating on the service that they receive from all contact with Thermoseal Group. The survey also included a series of questions prompting feedback on its teams, product offering, as well as an indication of what customers would like to see from Thermoseal Group in the future. The survey was completed by approximately 10% of the Group’s customer base offering a representative sample of UK and export customers being serviced by all of its UK depots. The Group’s Head of Marketing and Communications, Samantha Hill, tells us: “It’s always great to see the results of the customer survey and like every other survey I have seen in my years at Thermoseal Group, this one didn’t disappoint. With comments like “1st Class Service All Round” and “The knowledge of the sales team is second to none” or perhaps my favourite this year “Amazing Company; can’t fault anything; well done to you all as 10 years ago you were tiny and now are massive. Great work!” “We have an enviable customer retention rate here at Thermoseal Group and a good solid growth in business from new
customers. To ensure this, we monitor customer service on a daily basis and our Customer Relationship Management System provides full details and statistics so that our teams can drive to ensure that if we get it wrong, like everyone does at times, then we put it right as quickly as possible. We are also continually driving to improve our overall customer service offering. “Since the last survey was conducted in 2017, we have seen the installation of a new order tracking and delivery system at Thermoseal Group which is the final stage of our 5-year plan to achieve paperless sales order processing and a system which ensures a first-class service. “The 2019 Survey has reinforced our confidence that our customers appreciate our paperless system with comments like “Delivery method of invoicing is excellent” and “Service and delivery are perfect”. Following the implementation of a Centralized Production Control System, then a Bar Coding System as well as an earlier-installed customer e-Order Confirmation System, customers now receive continual order and delivery updates and all documentation is delivered with minimal impact on the environment. We can also now track our own-manufactured products - 55% of those we supply - back from customer to raw material. “We also launched a new website earlier in the year, which saw comments like “Super new look”, “Very user-friendly” and “Easy to search and identify products and a good source for product information”. In addition, 71% of respondents offered to trial our imminent E-Commerce system prior to launch. We will be in touch with those respondents! “I’d like to say a big thank you to all those customers who completed our Customer Satisfaction Survey. We have a multitude of suggestions for additions to our product range and some excellent feedback on how we can meet our customers’ future requirements. If you highlighted something we need to develop or improve on, then we’re on the case.” As a thank you, Thermoseal Group entered all respondents into a prize draw. The two main Prize Draw winners were presented with an Amazon Echo Smart Speaker with Alexa Control and runners up were presented with a Champagne Prize.
RELIANT CHOOSES
CENTRAL FOR RELIABILITY With almost 40 years’ experience in supplying home improvement products, it’s no surprise that Midlands based Installer, Reliant Windows, has enjoyed such longevity because of its continued commitment to quality, service and reliability. Aligning themselves with suppliers they know are also committed to the same values is one of the reasons they enjoy such a great relationship with The Boing Boing Group and everything the fast-growing fabricator has to offer from two companies under the Group umbrella; Central RPL and Central ASL. John Allen, Managing Director of Reliant Windows explains: “We have a great relationship with the team at Central. Whether it be RPL in the supply of PVC-U products mostly for our domestic customers, or ASL for aluminium products which we find is more in demand from our commercial customers, they have the right products to ensure we can offer our customers what they need. We’ve been around a long time and have seen the ever changing demands of the market, so we understand you need to evolve in order to stay ahead. It’s easy for us to do this with the help of a forward thinking fabricator like Central, as they continue to launch new products and initiatives that will support us in our desire to sell the very best home improvement products. “We recently worked with Central ASL on a commercial project of over 80 aluminium frames and curtain walling for Rosebury Place in Bath. We were delighted with how everything went. Delivery times were met, the product standard was absolutely first class and we received great customer service throughout the process. Reliable suppliers make things so much easier and that’s definitely something we get from Central, every time.” Gary Morton, CEO of the Boing Boing Group concludes: “Keeping our customers happy is at the heart of everything we do, which is why we put so much focus on developing our offering to ensure we deliver on their expectations. We have an excellent relationship with John, Nick and the team at Reliant and we work hard to ensure we gets things right, for them and for all of our customers, every time.” For more information on Reliant visit www.reliant-windows.co.uk. FOUNDING LANCASHIRE AMBASSADORS NEW FEATURES
- VEKA UK’S DAVE JONES HELPS SET A COURSE FOR SUCCESS TO BLINK BLINDS VEKA UK’s MD Dave Jones joined fellow Lancashire Ambassadors to discuss how this programme will see leading Lancashire business voices working together to amplify and enhance the profile and reputation of Lancashire as a place to live, visit, work, study and invest. Industry-leading PVCu systems supplier VEKA UK has been based in Burnley since VEKA came to Britain in 1986, and the manufacturer is proud to be a major employer for the area. VEKA UK is very proud of its Lancashire roots – with the majority of its 380-strong staff living within the local BB postcode – and this community spirit led MD Dave Jones to became an official founding Lancashire Ambassador alongside the likes of Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff. The inaugural event was hosted by Rachel McQueen, Chief Executive of Marketing Lancashire and the group met at the Seafood Pub Company’s Assheton Arms in Downham, where they enjoyed a Lancashire dinner created by Taste Lancashire Ambassador chef, Mark Taft. Lancashire Ambassadors are: BAE Systems, Barnfield Construction, Blackburn Rovers FC, Booths, Conlon Construction, Forbes Solicitors, Panaz, Scorpion Automotive and VEKA UK.
The ambassadors had a wide-ranging and frank discussion about the opportunities and challenges faced in their sectors, the diversity of the Lancashire identity, infrastructure, skills and retention and the fastmoving digital landscape; each sharing their views on how these influence and impact on business in Lancashire and how working together to champion the county on a regional, national and international level, they can help bring even greater recognition to the county. VEKA UK MD Dave Jones highlighted the need for companies to offer ongoing digital skills training to stay ahead of the curve: “Even in what some may see as more ‘traditional’ manufacturing businesses, the required skills are increasingly digital. I believe it’s vital for companies to embrace digital skills in order to maintain an ‘edge’ in such a competitive market, and we’re very lucky to have such a wealth of talent, innovation and training opportunities here in Lancashire. “VEKA UK’s digital approach and investment in new technology, like 3D-printing, has been transformational in the way we do business. The cost of 3D-printing a potential new product is only a fraction of the cost of more traditional prototyping and minimises

commercial risk by allowing us to trial new components before committing to further investment in tooling and development. Online channels like our website and social media profiles play a crucial part in staff recruitment for the business, as well as enabling us to demonstrate new products and services to customers quickly and clearly." With significant strengths in aerospace and manufacturing, Lancashire is a world leader and elevating those messages is vital to attracting more innovative and creative businesses to the county. The group also agreed that one of the main drivers for investment and business relocation was quality of life and that more could be done to highlight Lancashire’s assets, building especially on the rousing #WeAreLancashire film created with fellow Ambassador Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff. Rachel McQueen, Chief Executive of Marketing Lancashire commented “The inaugural meeting of the founding Lancashire Ambassadors was an opportunity to discuss the Lancashire economy, culture and lifestyle with a good cross-section of representatives from some of the best-known brands in the business community. “Our shared goal is to raise the profile of Lancashire as a prime location for investment, education, skills and the best quality of life. The Lancashire Ambassador Programme will help us take the county brand to ever wider audiences, to new international marketplaces and to position Lancashire at the heart of national conversations linked to economic growth and prosperity.” Find out more about VEKA UK’s commitment to the local community at vekauk. com/careers/ READER ENQUIRY NO: 1019/0054
GIVE FABRICATORS AND INSTALLERS OPPORTUNITIES TO ADD VALUE
Blink Blinds from ODL Europe have recently introduced new technical enhancements to their integral blind range giving fabricators and installers even more opportunities to add value into their portfolio. With over 5 million blinds manufactured and sold worldwide, Lee Summerfield, Business Development Manager at ODL Europe explains: “As a business committed to continuous improvement the new technical enhancements have raised the bar in integral blind design and functionality and gives our customers additional benefits when selling into the consumer.” The updates include 40mm equal sightlines as standard on all units which improves both the aesthetics of the blind and the smooth overall performance. The use of new ergonomic oval Perspex finish operators for a minimalist look, stronger magnets and a convex aluminium guide rail for greater connectivity. A large oval stopper with 1.5mm grub screws eradicates disengagement and damage and double valances on both channels help reduce light protruding through the sides while giving a clean overall appearance. Finally, the head rail now slides into the double valance on both ends which helps disguise any unsightly joints and prevents joints opening up over time.
Blink blinds are available in a choice of nine colours as standard including perennial favourites, black and anthracite grey. The choice of nine slat colour options match perfectly with the nine surround colours too. The new updated blinds are all available to order direct through the Blink Blinds’ secure online portal. Launched earlier this year, the online portal is available on desktops, tablet and mobiles and has been designed to be quick and easy to use, helping further improve the overall customer ordering experience. Blink Integral Blinds offer a modern alternative to traditional corded or cordless door and window blinds. Suitable for both windows and doors, they are an excellent upselling opportunity. Lee concludes: “Blink Integral Blinds are low maintenance and easy to use. Plus, the lack of exposed cords means they’re much safer than the traditional blind alternatives. These latest developments have taken our blinds to the next level and we are delighted with the positive feedback we have already received from our customers.” Tel: 0151 933 0299 www.odl.com/europe.htm READER ENQUIRY NO: 1019/0055

Unveiled this month, the new site has been developed as part of the fabricator’s commitment to simplify doing business with it - but also to offer its customers increased lead generation support. To this end, it includes access to EVA the Emplas portal and 24/7 digital ordering platform but also its newly created Authorised Installer Network. With dedicated homeowner landing pages, it’s been developed to connect network members with homeowners who are looking to appoint a supplier, adapting messaging to homeowners visiting the site as soon a they click on the homeowner tab as part of a new segmentation strategy. Emplas has also made dynamic content created for its own website, including 3D interactive product showcases, available to its

He continued: “I believe we now have that in a very easy-to-navigate new platform, which also allows us to generate leads for our trade customers, including members of the new Emplas Authorised Installer Network. “We’re also making all of the plug-in-andplay functionality developed for our site, including dynamic 3D window and door roll-over tools, available, to our customers. VEKA RECYCLING HOSTS LOCAL POLITICIANS AT NEW HQ Drawn by the prospect of the jobs and sustainable production VEKA Recycling Ltd is bringing to Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, local politicians made a visit to the company’s new headquarters to learn more about one of the area’s newest employers. The town’s Member of Parliament Peter Bone, accompanied by Northamptonshire County Councillor Gill Mercer, visited VEKA Recycling’s new site, which was established on the town’s Finedon Road Industrial Estate early in 2019. During the visit they learned how the plant is to become the most advanced of its type in Europe when it comes fully on stream next year. websites and online presence by making new retail tools available to them.” The new site also gives installers access to the Emplas Product Specification and Customer Support Guide, which was unveiled earlier this month. This brings each and every aspect of Emplas’ offer into a single tool, in addition to providing a comprehensive overview of regulations and specifications from WERs to CE Marking. “We’re reviewing and investing in our customer partnerships, to identify areas where there is an opportunity to add value to what we do, whether that’s in how we

is responsible for its development, showed the politicians how old PVC-U window and doorframes together with virgin offcuts, are re-processed at the plant and recycled into new products, including new window frames. Whilst currently operational with a process that reduces frames and other component materials into reusable polymer for a wide range of uses, some refinement of materials continues to be dealt with by VEKA Recycling’s other plants in Germany and France. By the end of the year the plant will significantly add to the processing capacity of VEKA Recycling Group, Europe’s largest PVC window recycler, which is already in excess of 60,000 tonnes annually, representing more than 3.5 million windows. With an investment expected to exceed £10 million when completed, the Wellingborough factory will be selfsufficient by the middle of next year. Simon explained that Wellingborough was chosen for its central location, telling the visitors that the site “fits the bill perfectly.” With 60 people employed currently, more jobs will be created when VEKA Recycling goes fully on line. The MP, a Conservative and dedicated Brexiteer, was delighted to hear that VEKA Recycling’s German owners were committed to investment in the UK, irrespective of the outcome of Brexit, commenting “I actually think that these Brexit problems are non-existent.” http://veka-recycling.co.uk READER ENQUIRY NO: 1019/0056

ADVANCE 70 AND SELECTA GOING FROM STRENGTH-TOSTRENGTH The Selecta renaissance continues to go from strength-to-strength with conversions to the Advance 70 Window and Door System reaching record numbers. Sales Director, Andy Green, talks about the reasons why an array of fabricators and installers are embracing the huge opportunities of being part of the UK’s only independent and family owned systems company. The last two and a half years have been a tremendously busy period for everyone involved at Selecta, with the last six months in particular being busier than we’ve ever experienced in recent years. So much so, that I’ve had comments that I’ve not been seen in the industry press recently, but that’s only because I’ve been up and down the country visiting customers and converting unhappy fabricators over to the Advance 70 System and Selecta!
IT’S ALL ABOUT TRUST During this time, we have seen a dramatic rise in the number of fabricators who feel they have been let down by their current window and door profile systems company. There seems to be a distinctive lack of trust - a breakdown of communication and support from their existing systems company. For me it’s all about trust. Commitment to customers, in all its forms, is integral to the success of their business and Selecta. For us, being independently and family owned allows ourselves to keep things personal, which is a good thing, as we aim to build and develop partnerships whatever the size of their business. People buy off people and our success is testament to that ethos, having made 41 conversions already so far this year, we’re appealing to a broad range of large, medium and small fabricators from all over the UK. Being that independent family run business continues to be an important and differentiating quality that more and more customers have come to acknowledge – there are so many like-minded, family run fabrication and installation businesses that we relate to. Building strong business relationships is a significant aspect for many companies and this, along with our personal touch, remains one of our strengths.
MEETING CUSTOMERS NEEDS Recognising customers needs is vitally important to both our customers and Selecta’s success. Recently, a large trade customers requirement for a simplistic frame connection system, to suit their installer network, resulted in a brand new product development to accompany the Advance 70 System. This saw the design and launch of LINK70, a pre-glazed frame connection system, which makes for simpler and faster installation of pre-glazed frames on site. The introduction of LINK70, mostly for the trade fabricator, has helped to reduce an installers average installation time of a standard conservatory by approximately 20%. It’s these kind of customer focused developments that have opened up new opportunities to both the fabricator and Selecta. The Advance 70 Window and Door System has also undergone improved and upgraded product testing, covering PAS 24: 2016 and Secured by Design, thus enabling Document Q compliance and providing installers with the ideal window and door solution for new build projects. The upgraded PAS 24 and Secured by Design testing and certification includes casement windows, single leaf doors, French doors, patio doors and our innovative EASi-FOLD doors. As a team we take a firm stance on product and customer development with product capabilities key. These are supported by our traditional family values and ethos of which is of paramount importance to us as a business. With new marketing support packages announced along with a brand new exciting product developments planned for the beginning of the new year, we foresee an exciting and successful future for all whom are part of the Selecta ‘family’. ‘PERFECT CORNERS’. AND SO MUCH MORE AT MASTERFRAME. Visiting Masterframe at Witham in Essex, Glass News’ Editor, Chris Champion, learns about high quality box sashes and about Timberweld® and the opportunities it brings to the market. “Quality and service outweigh the importance of quantity,” says Masterframe’s Alan Burgess, “We fabricate around 200 box sashes each week and pride ourselves on the product being, arguably, the best on the market.” The Masterframe box sash has always been recognised as being of a very high quality but since the advent of Timberweld®, it has been taken to a different level. Now the whole look has been seriously enhanced by mimicking the traditional timber frame joint: now the PVC-U box sash has the timber look and makes it an even more serious contender for conservation projects. There is no doubt that a quality box sash is one thing but one crafted with perfect timber like joints is something else again. And that’s where Timberweld® turns a high quality box sash into something that appears to have been created by a craftsman. Timberweld® is a patented method of fusion welding two sections together but hiding the welded seam behind a vertical butt joint. The appearance is the same as you'll see on original timber sash windows, vertical joints, just like timber. Masterframe has the exclusive license to manufacture sash windows using this method and all trade ranges now come standard with this technology. Most butt joints in the market are open ended but the Timberweld® joint is completely sealed from the elements such that there are no open chambers whereby detritus, draughts, rain or bugs can find their way inside. It’s clever stuff: both practical and extremely good looking and enhances the look such that it is perfect for conservation areas but also looks more than just good in contemporary developments, too. It may seem strange that Alan Burgess and his team are content to specialise in sash windows, restricting themselves to a relatively low number of frames per week when they could easily widen the scope to casements windows of every kind.

“We have dedicated ourselves to the box sash window over some 30 years,” says Alan Burgess. “With this specialism we surpass industry standards and are constantly setting new ones. We pride ourselves on being BBA accredited with all products CE marked and A rated as standard but still competitively priced.” Masterframe’s range of windows are split into three distinctive collections. The Authentic Collection comes with authentic features such as original putty line details, traditional patented Timberweld® butt jointed corners, deep bottom rail, run through horns and a white wood foil finish as standard. It is a competitively priced trade window and, although not as detailed as the Vintage
Collection, it has a very high specification of standard features and hardware as well as a long list of optional features that can be chosen. The Heritage Collection adds features such as Secured by Design as standard and an exclusive staff bead outerframe design, while the Vintage Collection takes detailing to another level with chamfered sashes and staff bead options for both inside and outside, slim integral mullion, bespoke hardware and a 55mm deep cill as standard. Although it is said that words can paint a thousand pictures that really is not the case with Masterframe’s products. To appreciate the quality it has to be seen and, even better, have the details explained by someone who really knows the product. It’s the little details that make the difference. A case in point is Masterframe’s London Sash and Frame System. Ray Rabett, Technical & Compliance Director at Masterframe, explains: “We were first approached about this window style when a customer was replacing windows at Guildford High School. The existing sash windows were square internally, but arched externally, and there wasn’t a solution on the market for a like-for-like replacement. We worked with them to deliver a solution for the project, but soon realised that this wasn’t a one-off. There were plenty of buildings around the London area that had this window style.” Ramon Rabett has recently been refocussed on his role as Technical and Compliance Director having temporarily headed up production, with Greg Ponds returning to Masterframe as Head of Production and recently being appointed Production Director. “These moves within the management team are important,” said Managing Director Carol Slade. “With sales climbing by 19% in the last quarter of 2018 production, and the maintaining of our extremely high standards, is vital to both our customers and to Masterframe.” Joining Masterframe in 2002 as a Financial Consultant, Carol joined the board in 2008 to take on the responsibility of Operations, Finance and HR and, shortly after that took on the responsibility for Sales, too. With that overall knowledge of the business
and with her drive and energy it is not surprising that Alan Burgess has been happy to let her take the Managing Director role while he steps into the role of Group Chairman. However, Alan is not ready for the pipe and slippers just yet. His own drive and vision is what has taken Masterframe to where it is today and Timberweld® is very much his baby, and one of which he is rightly proud. Timberweld® is an award winning product but is only one part of Masterframe’s box sash window. The awards and accreditations speak volumes for the quality and service offered by the company. Twice winners of the Fabricator of the Year and of the NFA awards for Timber Alternative Company Fabricator/ Manufacturer and New Product of the year for Timberweld®. Numerous customer care and Energy Efficiency Awards as well as 25 WER Certificates including the first five ever issued. Masterframe had the first PVC-u sash to gain Secured By Design and have BBA certificates for the whole window…. even the plant on Georgian Bars! They have ISO systems and process controls across the business and, not unexpectedly, CE marking for all standard products. However, Masterframe has not restricted Timberweld® to just themselves. They have licenced the use for other fabricators and raised the awareness of the aesthetically pleasing look of the timber like joint and there are now many fabricators that can produce that look for their frames. Alan Burgess is very open about the whole issue of licencing Timberweld® and he commented: “Timberweld® is patented

“With this specialism we surpass industry standards and are constantly setting new ones. However, why would they want to do that and let other fabricators steal a march on them? Although I say it myself, the whole look of Timberweld® is very appealing and to be able to have this authentic look inside and out is not a gimmick but a genuine replication of a timber joint in PVC-u. It is innovation such as this that will keep our industry progressing with better products to offer to homeowners, architects, housebuilders and so on. It makes PVC-u a real alternative to timber or aluminium in conservation projects and widens the scope for sales for installers and fabricators. Having the ability to be ahead of your opposition for the next 6 years until the patent runs out in 2025 has already made sense to a lot of people in the industry and we are happy to keep licencing people to use Timberweld® and gain a competitive advantage.” The watchword for Masterframe is quality and service. This is not unusual and it is one thing to say but, perhaps, harder to always do. Many companies outsource the making of sash windows to specialist companies and, when they do that, they expect the same high standards that they employ themselves. Masterframe is constantly looking at their own performance. Carol Slade comments. “Everyday we look at minor problems or customer feedback to improve our products or eliminate issues.
That’s why we invented self-adhesive foam cill pads to prevent any chance of water ingress, foam baffles to reduce air infiltration, balance retaining clips to secure balances for life, two part pivot bars and even strapping for carry handles to make handling on site easier. As the UK’s longest established company dedicated to PVC-U sash windows, we’ll do what we can to help you win orders. If things don’t quite go to plan, we really do help sort it out. We’re just a phone call away.”
a dedicated sash manufacturer for two important reasons, firstly, if a company makes everything, they don’t invest in bespoke solutions to overcome system weaknesses, nor do they offer anything other than standard solutions. Secondly, most casement fabricators actually sub contract their sash windows. You pay an extra margin for someone else to make your windows and that’s why you need a manufacturer that will deliver on time and in full.”
And Alan makes a point: “Trusting any company with your client’s order, you need to be certain they will deliver, on time and in full. You should always use

and some excellent trade customers. Would we like more? Yes, and we’re always ready to talk with companies. Although our sales are constantly increasing– quality and service comes first. Our ‘perfect corners’ with Timberweld® have opened doors to a number of very prestigious projects and working with specifiers and architects has become an important part of the business. However, we will keep innovating and improving. Within the next 2 years we will see Smart Ready Pro on vertical sliders and innovations such as the vacuum unit glass we showed at FIT with it’s 0.2mm void will take us all forward.” There is little doubt that Masterframe’s commitment to quality bodes well for their future and that of their customers.

EMPLAS INVESTS IN ILM ACCREDITED TRAINING Members of the Emplas management team have successfully completed an Institute of Management accredited training programme. Delivered as part of the trade specialist’s continuous business improvement programme, the 10-module ‘Engaging Leadership’ programme was delivered by independent training provider, Beyond Theory. Covering everything from customer experience skills, project management, to employee health and well-being, 10 members of the Emplas and T&K Home Improvements team, successfully completed the course this summer. Judith Chadwick, HR Manager Emplas, said: “It’s really important that our managers have the right skills-set and particularly those skills which allow them to get the most out of the teams that they manage. “If we get that right, everyone is more motivated and more productive – something which ultimately translates into better product quality, customer service and support.” With 15% of its technical and customer services team made up from former or current apprentices, and with ambitions to grow this to 20% across the business by the end of next year, Emplas already has one of the industry’s most established apprenticeships programmes. The Head of Emplas HR said, however, that it was just as important to focus on the training of the industry’s management, if it was to be successful in up-skilling its workforce. “Management is about much more than a title – and that’s something which is sometimes overlooked. Our managers are leaders within our business and if they’re to get the most out of the teams that they lead, it’s absolutely vital that we support them through appropriate training”, she said.
Modules were broken down into leadership v. management; time management and prioritization; project planning; performance management; team building; coaching; change management; and presentation skills, with each module focussed on the practical application of ‘classroom learning’ in an operational environment. Those taking part were selected from right across the business. This included production, transport, customer services, commercial and IT teams as well as two managers from Emplas’ in-house retail business, T&K. Kevin Mander, Operations QC Manager.: “The programme gave me a lot more confidence and a far better understanding of how to get the most out of the team. You’re often focussed on delivery, so making time to think about how we do things and how they can be improved, was invaluable. “We also got to understand other parts of the business better, as well as how your approach can have a big impact on how other people react to you one way or another, either positively, or negatively.” Those who completed the course continue to meet as part of working groups, sharing best practice and learning as part of an informal network and support function. Judith added: “One of the benefits is that we’ve got different people from different parts of the business talking to each other and working more closely together. “It’s improved individual skills sets but also communication. They’re more motivated, their teams are more motivated increasing efficiency, productivity and delivering better customer experience”, she concluded. “As a business we use a lot of IT from bar code tracking to online ordering but what we got back from our customers was that there was still demand for hard-copy documents”, he said. This follows the findings of a detailed customer poll which found that more than two thirds of Emplas existing customers gave the trade fabricator a 9 or 10 out of ten for support and service, with 72% of respondents rating online ordering as ‘excellent’. It, however, also revealed areas for improvement and that there was still demand among installers for hard copy reference material. Emplas’ core offer is built around Optima from Profile 22 including Optima sculptured (QS) or chamfered (QC) finish internally, plus a flush casement option. It’s available in 28mm glazing and supplied by Emplas as a WER A window as standard. Typical U-values start at 1.4W/m2K. Ex-stock standard foils are available on lead times of 10 days or less including Cream, Anthracite Grey, Anthracite Grey on White, Black Brown, and Black Brown on White, in addition to White, Golden Oak and Rosewood.
“We have brought any piece of information and resource that any of our customers could ever want to access into a single place”, explained John Leary, Sales and Marketing Director, Emplas.
In addition to its PatioMaster offer, Emplas also supplies the ALUK F82 aluminium bi-fold, while earlier this year, it also became the first manufacturer to supply a composite door with smart hardware as standard.
“There are so many times when you’re running a retail business that you need to check that little bit of information but digging it out from your paper filing system or most likely ‘bottom draw’, can cost you a huge amount of time.
Leary continued: “We have one of the industry’s most comprehensive product and support offers. The Product Specification and Customer Support Guide brings that together in a single reference tool, used by us, and our customers.
“The Emplas Product Specification and Customer Support Guide brings everything into a single document. There’s no scrabbling about”, he added.
“We’re literally and metaphorically on the same page, making communication simpler and more effective and improving service.”
Leary explained that Emplas had decided to go down a paper in addition to a digital tool

And it’s rewarding to know that with people’s generous support, we’ll be raising valuable funds - even in our sleep!
November 15th will see the team braving the cold and sleeping by the Burnley FC pitch, all in the name of fundraising. The Turf Moor Sleepout event heightens awareness of Homelessness in the local area and aims to raise money for three charities: Burnley FC in the Community, Emmaus, and SafeNet Domestic Abuse Service for Jane’s Place Women’s Refuge. VEKA UK’s Marketing Director Dawn Stockell was one of more than 50 fundraisers that took part in the event last year, which raised over £28,000. The aim for 2019 is to beat last year’s total and further increase awareness of the rising epidemic of homelessness in the UK. Dawn says: “VEKA UK is well known for supporting registered local charities, causes and community projects across the region. It’s a significant part of our ethos and one that we are very proud of. The Turf Moor Sleepout is a good chance to do our bit and to highlight how capable the VEKA team are of taking on any challenge! We’re not afraid to get stuck in, especially for a good cause (or three).
“The Sleepout is a timely fundraiser for an important cause; according to official estimates, 4,677 people in the UK slept on the streets or in sheds and tents in 2018. This is 165% higher than in 2010, with areas of the North West heavily affected. We’re keen to do our bit to raise funds and awareness.”
The ten VEKA employees taking part are Gemma Haythornwhite, Dawn Stockell, Gabriela Hammond, Colette Hunter, Vicky Giles, Charlotte Hulme, Caroline Howles, Helen Bailey, Louise Scholey and Lindsay Williams. Dawn adds, “we’re very grateful for any support, and every donation will make it that bit easier for us to swap our quilts for coats and to bed down outside in November’s winter weather.” To support this event, please visit justgiving. com and search ‘VEKA UK Turf Sleepout’. MORLEY GLASS SETS ITS SIGHTS ON INTEGRAL BLIND COMPANY AWARD Morley Glass and Glazing is in the running to be crowned Integral Blind Company of the Year at the annual National Fenestration Awards. The business is up against two other companies in the category, and while the competition is strong Morley feels confident thanks to its commitment to customer service, 10 -day lead time for sealed units with integral blinds inside, as well as continued year-on-year growth. SECONDARY FACILITY FOR ROSEVIEW’S INCARNATION Well-known fabricator Roseview Windows has more than doubled the capacity of its Incarnation secondary glazing brand, by expanding into a new factory. Previously Incarnation operated from 2,500ft2, but now half of a new 11,000ft2 facility has been dedicated to manufacturing aluminium secondary glazing. The company has also invested more than £100,000 in new machinery and tooling, helping to meet rapidly growing demand. Paul Bygrave, director at Roseview Windows comments: “We started manufacturing secondary glazing seven years ago, largely as a service for our sash window customers. The idea was that we could help them win business on heritage projects where replacement windows weren’t permitted. “Since then interest in the heritage market, and thus demand for secondary glazing, has
grown enormously. We were struggling to cope in our previous space so we took the decision to take things to the next level. “Secondary glazing is a traditional product that hasn’t changed much in the last 40 years. Only a handful of companies made it, which has sometimes been reflected in poor customer service and lead times. Through this expansion we’re able to bring the Roseview philosophy to a product area that had gone a little stale, manufacturing high quality heritage products for trade and commercial customers, backed up by excellent service and technical backup.” The other half of the facility close to Roseview’s Buckinghamshire base has been set aside for new developments coming in 2020. Roseview managing director Richard Burrells comments: “Along with Incarnation’s expansion, we have exciting plans for our Rose Collection sash windows next year, including the launch of a new model. The extra space available at our new facility will help us to deliver those plans and increase overall capacity without interrupting our already busy production line.” For more information on Incarnation secondary glazing or Rose Collection sash windows, visit www.roseview.co.uk or call 01234 712657. NEW ADDITIONS
TO GREENTEQ ASPIRE RANGE
The greenteQ Aspire hardware range, designed for contemporary sliding doors, has been expanded to include a new Bi-fold Intermediate Handle, Sprung Door Handle and Escutcheon Plates. Both handles are available in nine finishes, including the new Enduro Steel and Brushed Graphite.
Designed to operate locks on the intermediate points of a bi-fold, the Aspire Intermediate Handle uses 43mm fixing centres, matching most intermediate locks in the market. It is suitable for use on aluminium, PVC-U and timber bi-folds
and, standing at only 16mm from the face of the profile, allows the sashes to fold back neatly in the fully open position.
Aspire Sprung Door Handles and Escutcheon Plates have been designed for use on aluminium residential and bi-fold
doors, with a strong spring ensuring the lever always returns to the 90˚position. Rob Norman, Lifestyle Product Manager at VBH says: “We introduced the Aspire furniture range to complement our hardware offering for on-trend ‘Grand Designs’ styled, oversized and heavy sashes. With the trend showing no signs of slowing, the addition of the Intermediate Handle and Sprung Door Handles/Escutcheons means homeowners can benefit from stylish, contemporary hardware on their front door and rear bi-fold. Our 10-year corrosion and mechanical guarantee comes as standard, and fabricators and installers can order online via VBH24, or call their local Area Sales Manager for a demonstration of the range.” For more information on the Aspire suite, visit www.vbhgb.com, call 01684 263300 and follow @vbhgreenteQ for the latest updates.

IN ITS SIXTH YEAR, DHF INITIATIVE, GATE SAFETY WEEK BECOMES GATE SAFETY MONTH Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has announced that its automated gate safety campaign, Gate Safety Week, has become Gate Safety Month. The Tamworth-based trade association launched the initiative in 2014; since then, the campaign has received increasing national attention and the support of some of the most influential organisations in the security, enforcement, inspection, education and safety sectors, such as HSE and The British Safety Council. “Such is the profile of Gate Safety Week, that despite already having a year-round presence, it seemed entirely natural to extend the focused campaign from just one week in October, to the entire month,” explain DHF’s Commercial Manager, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens. “In support of this, DHF is offering a £35 discount on the one-day Level Two Award in Automated Gate & Traffic Barrier Safety training courses (both accredited and non-accredited), taking place during the safety awareness month. These fall on 17th October in Barnsley, and 22nd October in Tamworth.” The courses, ideal for installers and maintenance engineers of automated gates and traffic barriers, will provide delegates with knowledge on the safety standards and legal practices in their industry. DHF’s continuing commitment to tackling the thorny issue of gate safety has shone a much-needed spotlight on unsafe automated gates and raised awareness of what proper installation and maintenance should look like, in addition to how to prevent accidents. In 2019, its objectives remain unchanged: to educate and inform professional installers, industry contacts and the general public on the dangers

centred around poorly installed and maintained powered gates, in addition to how to report an unsafe gate and what to look for. “When Gate Safety Week started in 2014, it was estimated that more than 70% of the 500,000 automated gates in service in the UK were deemed unfit for use, but as a result of our efforts, significant progress has been made, such as the launch of the industry code of practice, DHF TS 011:2016.” says Patricia. The code, which was updated in 2019, was created to reduce the safety risks associated with automated gates and traffic barriers to as low as is reasonably practicable and was created after discussions with HSE (Health and Safety Executive). “DHF’s Gate Safety Week campaign has continued to gain real traction since 2014 and we’re delighted to extend this to Gate Safety Month; through our training programmes, technical specifications, and collaborative working, we have seen an encouraging improvement in the quality of gate installations as well as the knowledge of installers in the UK,” concludes Patricia. “We will continue to work extremely hard to ensure that the risk of injury, or death, caused by automated gates is eliminated.” For further information about Gate Safety Month, please visit: https://www.dhfonline.org.uk/gate-safety-week.htm TW: @gatesafetyweek @dhfonline. ALUMINIUM ALUMNI:
STUDENTS IN SCOTLAND BENEFIT FROM TITON HARDWARE Over 630 Sobinco Chrono aluminium tilt and turn window systems with SF Xtra trickle vents from Titon have been installed at three student accommodation blocks at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. The new, contemporary designed halls of residence contain over 450 large single en-suite rooms, as well as shared kitchen/ lounge areas. Named after past professors from the University (Anna MacLeod, Mary Fergusson and Muriel Sparks), the new student accommodation opened on the Edinburgh campus in September 2017. The three buildings were designed by Fletcher Joseph architects and built by leading UK construction group Watkin Jones, with Glasgow-based company Marshall Brown (Windows) Limited responsible for the fabrication of the windows. Commenting on the accommodation project, Brian Ross, Commercial Manager at Marshall Brown (Windows) Limited, said: “We opted to use Titon having previously fitted their hardware on numerous projects. As a company, their products and services are second to none. For the HeriotWatt University buildings, both the Chrono and SF Xtra vents offered ease of fabrication, while the tilt and turn systems are robust, as well as easy to maintain and replace. Plus, as they utilise plastic rods, there is no risk of corrosion, which is excellent from a reliability perspective.”
Titon’s SF Xtra is a high performance, surface mounted aluminium slot ventilator. It is the shortest trickle vent on the market to provide 5000mm² EA, making it suitable for domestic and non-domestic applications. There are two width variants, one for use over a 13mm slot, the other for a 16mm slot. The vent is also available in madeto-measure sizes or bar length for self-assembly, with all versions suitable for use with either a plastic or aluminium canopy. Sobinco Chrono fast-fit hinge and locking systems are suitable for most aluminium link bar profiles. They are suitable for virtually all variations of open-in window, with options available for high-security and French casement. A standard tilt and turn units can be assembled in around five minutes, greatly reducing fabrication time, while a choice of handle designs and attractive RAL colour finishes are also available. Titon has been the exclusive UK distributor for Sobinco for nearly 40 years, supplying tilt and turn window systems, pivots, catches and handles, as well as locks, lift-slide systems, roller assemblies and handles for doors. STAYING AHEAD OF THE CURVE Sarah Binns, Head of Internal Sales & Marketing, discusses Window Ware’s efforts to improve efficiency and response times for customers , and the upgrades the distributor has made to further advance their award-winning customer service. At Window Ware, it is no secret that we are absolutely fanatical about offering great customer service. It’s been a primary focus for us across our 30+ years in business and stems from our origins as a fabricator. In fact, we’ve never lost that practical understanding that only comes from being in the thick of the action! Our experienced team of exfabricators, ex-fitters, hardware buffs and hands-on area sales specialists help us stay close to our customers across the country and keep us finely attuned to their needs. Our customers always come first, and we’ll do our very best to deliver the quality, service, knowledge and support they expect. Whether it’s a one-off purchase or a regular order, we’re always looking for new ways to keep improving our award-winning service. Whilst it’s important that we continue to expand our range, adding over 400 new lines in just two years, it’s also absolutely vital that we continue to invest and upgrade to meet the supply demands of fabricators and trade counters across the UK. Our sales office has recently gone paperless. That means, all fax, web and email orders are now attached to the customer’s profile in our intelligent ERP system. Because there is no physical paper trail to follow, staff have better visibility of our customers’ interactions and can answer queries faster with less chance of lost documentation. Nevertheless, many customers still prefer to fax through their orders and quote requests. Instead of trying to dissuade those customers from using their preferred
method, we shaped our systems around them and introduced new technology into our sales office which allowed their faxed orders to filter into our sales email inbox. Giving customers the ability to order how and when they like is incredibly important to us. Unlike other distributors, we are far more flexible with minimum order quantities and will even split boxes if necessary. This longtail approach to our product offering is perfectly suited to today’s changing market, where colour is more prevalent, choice is key and sometimes fabricators simply don’t need a full box! We are also very flexible with our deliveries and next day is still part of our standard service on orders received before 3.30pm. In fact, over 97% of our 6,500+ products arrive with the customer the very next working day! We’ve also worked hard to refine and automate our customer communications, to ensure they are as clear and informative as possible. To that end, customers receive an email confirmation after placing their order, along with a separate notification if there are any backorders. In addition to these Window Ware order updates, customers also receive delivery emails from our logistics partner on the morning their delivery is due. The improvements aren’t just restricted to our sales office. Our warehouse, which carries almost £3 million worth of stock, has recently been kitted out with upgraded software and new barcode scanners. These investments will not only help speed up picking, they’ll also improve accuracy and boost our
ability to get orders right first time. For example, through the new system, warehouse staff now have access to critical picking information, which ensures our more technical products are properly fulfilled with all necessary components present and correct. We’re pleased to report that these changes have been well-received by customers, suppliers and brand partners alike. We hope they will have also gone some way to securing our recent nomination for ‘Component Supplier of the Year’ at the upcoming G19 Awards. Hayley Jackson, our dedicated Sales Coordinator of more than 15 years, also received a well-deserved nomination for the highly coveted ‘Unsung Hero’ award. Acknowledgements like these from peers and professionals who actively work in the industry are extremely humbling and make all our hard work worthwhile. This recognition is a real testament to our talented team, and I know it will only spur them on to bigger and better things. We’ll never stop improving all aspects of our operations, to give our customers everything they need in terms of quality products, flexible ordering, competitive prices and most importantly, a superior service. MIGHTON PRESENTED WITH WORLD FIRST BSI INTERNET SECURITY CERTIFICATE FOR AVIA SECURE SMART LOCK
GLAZERITE IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE SMART HOME MOVEMENT The Ultion lock has been fitted as standard for many years by The Glazerite UK Group Ltd, offering homeowners safe, secure doors that stop burglars entering their homes. The pressure for door manufacturers to enter the smart home market has been vast, with homeowners wanting the same convenience over opening their front door, as they have over much of their home.
From left to right: David Mudd, BSI Global Digital & Connected Product Certification Director; Mike Derham, Mighton Products Chairman; Anne Scorey, BSI UK & Ireland Managing Director; Jim Herrington, Mighton Products Marketing Director; Stephen Thomas, IoT Business Development Manager
Mighton has been officially presented with a certificate from the British Standards Institution (BSI) in recognition of achieving the Government’s Code of Practice for consumer Internet of Things (IoT) security for its Avia Apple HomeKit smart lock – the first ever product of any kind to receive the ETSI TS 103 645 accreditation. The Code of Practice, which is recognised internationally, was introduced by the UK Government in October 2018, in response to growing concern about the cyber security of smart enabled devices in the home. Not only does the standard help to ensure the privacy and security of consumers when using their smart home products, it is also designed to prevent the threat of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks that are launched from poorly secured IoT devices. Mighton’s chairman, Mike Derham, and marketing director, Jim Herrington, received the award from the BSI’s global digital and connected product certification director, David Mudd; BSI UK & Ireland managing director, Anne Scorey; and IoT business development manager, Stephen Thomas. David Mudd commented: “Well done to Mighton Products for achieving compliance to the first globally-applicable standard for consumer IoT security. Best practice is

more than just good encryption, strong passwords and addressing other system design issues, it’s also about responsible disclosure, software support and effective user guidance. It’s great to see companies taking this fully on board.” Avia – which carries PAS 24 accreditation and features 256-bit data encryption for enhanced security – is the first Apple HomeKit lever operated smart multipoint lock. Available to UK trade customers exclusively through hardware distributor, Mila, it is a ‘full function’ lock that can be controlled using iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch, keypad and fob, combined with the peace of mind of a traditional key and TS 007 3-star cylinder. Access via facial recognition is another exciting innovation that can be activated by an optional accessory.
Glazerite and Brisant know that the most important aspect of any door lock, whether smart or not, is that it is secure. Ultion Smart offers that solution. The concept of having the industry-expected three-star security benefits wrapped up into a smart solution, is one that Glazerite are not prepared to miss. Ultion Smart has just received a five star review from the world’s leading gadget magazine, Stuff. Editor James Day honedin on two main points that seemed to be the main reasons that it scored so highly. Firstly, its simple. There are no holes to drill or wires to connect. In addition, pairing it with the app is quick, it works and is feature rich. Secondly, Stuff found the autounlock function “entirely reliable.” James put this down to the partnership between a traditional top security company in Brisant
and a tech company, bringing the military encrypted Danalock V3 technology to the table. Jeff Dunn, Group Sales and Marketing Director of Glazerite said, “What has impressed me most about Ultion Smart is it still delivers the high standard of security that our installer partners find a key selling benefit. Whilst I especially liked the wireless keypad, you’ll never convert homeowners that want a real key so having that option is great too and will appeal to a wider audience.” Ultion Smart offers ‘on approach’ auto unlocking; it can be used on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and is compatible across multiple platforms, Apple Homekit, Alexa, IFTTT, Samsung Smart Things, Zigbee and Z-Wave. The app offers electronic invites for guests, auto unlocking and auto locking after a selected time. Stuff said of Ultion Smart that it offers, “a re-assuring combo of digital and physical burglar-proofing.” Glazerite and Brisant couldn’t agree more. GLASS NEWS INTERVIEW: APERTURE GROUP
The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
APERTURE GROUP: BUILDING A STRONG BUSINESS WITH CUSTOMERS AT ITS HEART Meeting up with Matthew Mycock, CEO of Aperture Group and MD Robin Baker, gives Glass News’ Editor, Chris Champion, the opportunity to talk about the most recent transformations within the company and, more importantly, about its future plans. The pre-pack deal that saw Aperture Trading acquire Synseal from administration is well documented and, at the time, Matthew Mycock said: “I joined the business in April last year and have since been working hard with the board to chart a new course through a rapidly changing industry landscape. The formation of Aperture Trading provides the platform from which to develop a business that is right-sized and fit for the future, and one in which investment can be made across the many innovative products that will drive its growth.” Commenting on market conditions and the changing face of the fenestration industry, he went on to say that there was a significant opportunity. “To access it (the opportunity), businesses need to decide where their core is and honestly appraise current performance and where the opportunities for improvement lie. That’s why it has been critical to implement these changes and secure investment across the businesses in order to seize this opportunity. The team is now clear on the way forward. We’re determined that we will create a simpler, more customer focused, and more sustainable business for our customers, colleagues and critical supply chain partners.” It was with this background in mind that I approached the meeting and, like some in the industry, I have to say I was a bit
cynical. However, after a 2 hour very honest and open ‘warts and all’ interview with Mat and Robin I was pleasantly surprised and honestly believe anyone else that has face to face time with this new team would feel the same. Here’s how it went.
We’re now into September 2019. What progress is being made at Aperture Group? Mat Mycock: The first priority was always to secure the jobs for as many of the workforce as we could. Not just for their own wellbeing but also for the company, going forward. We have been looking carefully at our product range and the costs within the business. In total, more than 40 separate transformation streams have been the focus for driving the future of the business, which has had to be prepared not to shrink away from taking difficult decisions.
Euphemism for redundancies? Mat Mycock: Not at all. We’re being very open in what we are doing. The acquisition initially preserved around a 1000 jobs that would have otherwise been lost. Of course, if you reduce the range of activity to concentrate on what is profitable, regrettably, that means that there also has to be some reduction in the workforce. The whole management team is acutely aware we employ people with families and mortgages to pay, so our priority is making the business a profitable one to ensure we can continue to safeguard the majority for the long term.
And presumably you are in a cash burning stage at the moment? Mat Mycock: Any business that undertakes the depth of transformation we have taken on will consume cash for a period and we have accounted for that in our business
Left to right: Robin Baker, MD core Aperture Business, Calibre Doors and Norvik New Build Business units; Daniel Cox, Procurement Manager; Helen Tunnicliffe, Head of Marketing; Matthew Mycock, Group CEO; Carolyn Reed, HR Director; Steve Halford, Business Development Director and Elliott Dawson, Commercial Manager Social Housing & Contracting.
plan. It is no surprise, and we are on schedule to move out of that stage by the end of the year.
product development to address some of the improvements identified by both the company and the trade.
Is it all about concentration on profitable products?
So we will now prioritise Warmcore for marketing activity to make more companies aware of its unique benefits. Having now invested in a Graf welder we are keeping our product development team busy with new product developments. For example, suiting hardware across the range. You can’t have one kind of hardware for windows and completely different for a bifold or a Patio. It doesn’t make sense and that anomaly is being rectified starting with black and grey hardware for the bi fold door suite.
Mat Mycock: Focusing on those activities that can be profitable and stopping those that can’t is certainly a large part of the plan but, along with that, is investment in specific products. There is also work progressing on new products in some areas.
Can you be more specific? Mat Mycock: How long have you got?! The range of Warmcore products is a good example. It’s a great product and made a real impact at launch with strong sales even today. I think it’s a real jewel in our business. However, since its launch it has had very little investment in marketing or
We’re also introducing 6 new foils and 13 additional powder coated colours to our existing colours as part of the Warmcore range, which easily solves the problem for dual colour door configuration. The new Warmcore French Window will also incorporate an injection moulded two-part flying mullion end cap….and all of this is imminent. Both Legend 5 and 9 series window systems are getting flush sashes, so there is a lot of development going on. But first up, we are about to launch our new 68mm timber Portium door – a really stunning range.
I was also impressed with the cranked handle that has been developed because a customer said it pinched their fingers while 52

opening their patio. A case, surely, of fat fingers? I had no trouble opening the door. Mat Mycock: It was an easy fix and let’s just say it gives another option for customers.
Where are the economies being made? Mat Mycock: Perhaps the most significant thing we’ve done is to reduce our 5 PVC-u systems to just 2: Legend and Synerjy. This means we have less waste and longer extrusion runs for both Legend and Synerjy. Fewer tool changes and more recycling have a bearing on economy, too, as does reducing the number of SKUs by around 6,000. However, economies can be made in all kinds of ways, not just the big stuff. For example, we have reduced power consumption by 20%. It’s really all about focusing on the core, returning to profit, then building growth in a sustainable way. I would rather have a smaller turnover company that makes money than a big one that doesn’t. When the focus is on chasing an expanding top line, almost at any cost, revenue becomes a drug not unlike heroin. It can lead to the wrong choices and is very difficult to get off.
I fully expected to come here today and to experience an atmosphere of doom and gloom but that’s not the case. There seems to be a buzz around the place and plenty of smiling faces! Mat Mycock: We have a great workforce and they are completely behind what Aperture is doing. They understand and want to be part of the future. We share our thoughts and our plans with them and we are inclusive in how we work.
Has your target for customers changed? There has been plenty of talk about toolmakers being full www.glassnews.co.uk | October 2019
as fabricators jump ship to other systems… Mat Mycock: It is no secret that we have lost some fabricator customers, but we are also retaining customers by talking to them and including them in our plans. They understand what we are doing and can see the benefits to them. It’s really a very simple model: we source raw materials and pay our suppliers; we manufacture and supply to our customers and they pay us. In all honesty, if a customer doesn’t understand that logic and is unwilling to commit to paying us for our supply, then we don’t want them. We shall retain around 60% of the volume from the profile systems we have retired and will look to build that back up by a being an excellent supplier of quality products, many of which are unique.
GLASS NEWS INTERVIEW: APERTURE GROUP
Apart from the fabricator, who else are you targeting? Mat Mycock: The list is simple. Fabricators, Installers, New Build, Builders’ Merchants, Social Housing and Export. There are great opportunities in all of these channels, some of which we have not fully focused on before. Export may come as surprise but that too has great possibilities especially with Warmcore.
So is export specifically for Warmcore? Mat Mycock: No. We already export nearly £2 million worth of products including portal based products to the USA, and have a toe in the water in Australia and New Zealand, the UAE and hopefully in the next few weeks a route into Scandinavia. We also recently completed a new distributor agreement for Ireland. Export is an opportunity for a number of products but the focus will be on Warmcore.
You have declared that Aperture is moving forward with 6 product groups. Can you specify those? Mat Mycock: There’s PVC-u systems in Legend and Synerjy; Warmcore; Calibre Doors; PVC-U fabrication and new build business through Norvik; Roof systems with Global and K2 plus Celsius Solid Roofs, Stratus Lantern roof and SkySpace; and Glass from Global Glass. We will, of course, keep reviewing the performance of these activities to ensure we are making the right choices.
enthusiasm and motivational skills and we will very much work as a team while giving me some time to concentrate on the strategy for the company. And of course, it’s not just Robin. We now have a strong management team consisting of some big industry and non-industry names. Steve Halford joins the team as Business Development Director who many will know from Crystal Clear Group, Tuffx Conservatory Roof Glass or Ultraframe. Heading up HR is Carolyn Reed whose previous roles include Global HR Director for Tunstall Group and Head of Leadership & Talent at Hastings Direct, while the Head of Marketing is Helen Tunnicliffe who many will recognise from Saint-Gobain. Daniel Cox is Procurement Manager and Elliott Dawson is the Commercial Manager responsible for the Social Housing & Contracting Sector.
Lastly, and it has to be asked, is this a quick 3 to 5 years and exit? Mat Mycock: That’s not the intent at all. Our backers are looking for dividends in the future and are looking at the long term. They recognise that Aperture has to win back trust within the trade and return to being a stable, well-funded company with a strong balance sheet, and profitable. We are building a team here to take Aperture into a successful future and, as I have said before, I’m spearheading a new organisation that’s fit for the future, and most importantly, fit for the next generation of customers. Our clear message to the market is that we’re here to stay, and we intend to build a strong business with customers at its heart. There’s a way to go yet but we’re on the right path.
You now have Robin Baker on board as Managing Director and he comes with a great deal of experience, most recently at Masonite and Doorstop. Does this mean a changing role for you? Mat Mycock: Robin has vast experience of running companies and getting right into day to day operations. He has great energy,

WINDOWS
The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
NEW ‘AMBASSADOR’ WORKSHOPS REVEAL THE GARNALEX WAY
PROFILE 22 OPTIMA WINDOWS SPECIFIED IN TELFORD NEW BUILD DEVELOPMENT Profile 22’ Optima sculptured windows were specified and commissioned for 39 new build homes in Snedshill, Telford for private rent. The window specification was for a RAL 7016 Grey on White sculptured profile that could achieve an overall U value of 1.4 W/ m2K. Secured by Design accreditation was a requirement as was PAS24 / Part Q compliance. The site’s location near a busy road meant acoustic glazing was required on some elevations. Trickle vents were required on some windows, including those with acoustic glazing requirements, which meant non-standard acoustic trickle vents were required. Other windows required astragal bars, which needed to be glazed and heat wrapped before leaving the factory. The project’s main contractor, Lovell Partnerships, awarded the window contract to Profile 22 Approved Window Contractor Select Windows. Select operates nationwide in the refurbishment and new build construction markets. It has worked with Lovell Partnerships regularly and has built up a reputation as a contractor to be trusted, a factor that played an important part in winning the tender. Select tendered for the contract with Profile 22’s Optima Sculptured Window because it more than met the requirements of the project. The Optima system delivers a 1.2 W/m2K U-value as standard, with U-values as low as 0.8 W/m2K possible. Optima windows achieve PAS24 2016 Enhanced
Security and have Secured by Design options when these are required, as they were in this case. The high specification of the glazing configuration and the requirement for windows with astragal bars to be glazed at the factory added an extra level of challenge to the project. Fabrication and installation of the windows was completed smoothly and on schedule thanks to Select’s experience in working cooperatively and proactively to demanding timescales. The completed homes are an excellent addition to Telford’s housing stock. Steve Chatham, Select Windows’ Business Development Manager, said: “We are very pleased with this development, which looks very impressive from the roadside.” Optima is increasingly becoming the commercial system of choice because of its ability to meet demanding requirements. This project is a perfect example of how the system is able to play a vital role in enabling the development of high-quality social housing that will stand the test of time. “We work hard as a business to continually develop our offering and provide customers with the best products,” comments Steve Hardy, Joint Managing Director of Sidey. “Customers are willing to pay more for premium products, such as the growing trend for grey profiles and flush sash windows, but they want premium quality in return. Timberweld allows us to achieve the sleek, modern appearance customers expect - all in a timely and cost effective way.
Alan Burgess, one of the innovators behind Timberweld, adds: “We’re very proud to have Sidey as a Timberweld licence holder, as they have a great reputation in the industry. With Sidey the only licensee in Scotland they are in the unique position of providing PVC-U windows and doors with a strong, authentic butt-joint for the whole country!”

Garnalex has announced a December start date for its first fabricator and installer ‘Ambassador’ Workshops. The new Garnalex aluminium window and door systems are significantly different from previous and current generations of aluminium systems in the way they are fabricated, installed and sold. The innovative systems, launching in early 2020, will be easier and faster to fabricate and install than other aluminium systems on the market. Attendance at one of the workshops is an opportunity for fabricators and installers to hear about the Garnalex Way, have a tour of the new state-of-the-art Garnalex factory, and be one of the first fabricators and installers in their area to sell Garnalex. Attendees will learn more about the £9m (to date) investment in the factory and learn how Garnalex’ advanced window and door systems will transform the market for aluminium residential windows and doors. Further investment is planned. The factory will start extruding aluminium profiles for trade customers this October and its own product range later in the year. Garnalex will be one of only two or three UK-owned systems companies that extrudes its own aluminium, and the only one that makes its own complementary plastic components. Garnalex Marketing and Sales Manager Eilidh Hudson, who will be hosting the Ambassador Workshops, says: “We’ve been working on the state-of-the-art factory and the new window and door systems
in parallel, so everything comes together for the launch at the end of Q1 2020. The fabricators and installers who will fabricate, install and sell them are a key part of the launch, but they will not be able to fabricate them in the way they’ve been used to, which is why we’re running these workshops. The windows and doors are designed to be easier, faster and all-round better than any aluminium systems they’ve seen before, but fabricators will need to use different tools to fabricate them, and fabricators and installers will need to be trained in them and in our bespoke Garnalex software. “There will be technical information and prototypes to see,” continues Eilidh, “and presentations and discussions with the technical team. Attendees will also hear about the thinking behind the factory, which has been designed to be many times more efficient than extrusion factories they’ll have seen. Tool or die changes, for example, are six-times faster than worldclass best-practice manufacturing ‘SMED’ (Single Minute Exchange of Dies) aspires to. Why? Because less factory downtime, means more extruded profile in stock and shorter lead times. Garnalex aims to set new standards in service and support, delivering aluminium profiles in PVC service times. It’s #AluminiumButNotAsYouKnowIt!” To book a place on the Ambassador Workshops email Eilidh.Hudson@garnalex. com, call Eilidh on 01332 883980, and follow @GarnalexSystems on Twitter and @ Garnalex Ltd on LinkedIn.

THE POWER OF
GREAT DESIGN
The Genesis Collection from Bison Frames (UK) Ltd remains a popular choice for installers and you only have to look at the products on offer to understand why. Marcus O’Boyle, Business Development and Marketing Manager of Bison Frames discusses the added value benefits Genesis has to offer installers. Your choice of products is critical to your business. We all know that when it comes to window and door products, today’s consumers are much more design savvy than they once were. Market research continues to report that today’s consumers are looking for high quality, feature rich products when it comes to window and door replacements and are more influenced by design to the extent that price is becoming less an overriding consideration. Furthermore, today’s consumers have real-time access to unlimited amounts of information due to mobile devices becoming an integral part of daily life. Consumers spend more time researching about the quality of products that are available to enhance their home than ever before. And with the trend of ‘improve, don’t move’ this should be good news for our industry. What has caused this shift is a growing desire from consumers for a better standard of product. This has been further fuelled by the craze for TV home makeover programmes along with a plethora of home improvement magazines that grace most coffee tables. Installers that adapt their product offer and focus more on refined product benefits, such as quality and styling, will be more attractive to consumers as the industry starts appealing to the heart as well as the head. The demand for refined, well designed products comes as little surprise to us at Bison Frames which is why in 2013 we launched our first Genesis product, the Genesis Vertical Sliding window. Fast forward six years and the expanded Genesis Collection offers a range of high-end window and door products that not only satisfies the needs of the consumer, but enables the retailer/installer to enhance their margins by selling branded products that offer

compelling USP’s rather than just the lowest price. An example of this is found in the stalwart of the collection, the Genesis vertical slider. It represents true innovation and helped raise the bar for a new generation of window design and manufacture. The first thing that you notice about the Genesis vertical slider is the use of traditional timber jointing methods rather than the usual 45-degree welds that you see on PVC-U. A deep bottom rail as standard, run-through sash horns, an optional Georgian Astragal bar and a complete range of authentic woodgrain and heritage coloured foil options complete the stunningly authentic heritage appearance. Yet features such as superb security, low maintenance, high-quality spiral balances, a tilt-open facility and superb energy efficient make it every inch a modern window. Demand for Flush Casement windows remain as buoyant as ever, especially in the refurbishment and new build markets. The Genesis Flush Casement window combines the elegance of a traditional window with all the modern-day properties a consumer would need. And our matching Genesis Flush French door supports the flush-product aesthetics for a totally coordinated look. Every product in The Genesis Collection is meticulously crafted by us at Bison Frames.
The windows and doors are available with a choice of crafted joint options to give a beautiful finish or for projects that want to replicate real timber, The Heritage joint is the perfect choice. For something even more seamless, the Genesis Finesse joint uses Graf weld technology for the ultimate, seamless joint. In short, the Genesis Collection is perfect for discerning homeowners who are choosing windows as a lifestyle choice and want something that offers real kerb appeal. This makes the Collection perfect for modern homes, as well as traditional properties. And with a selection of colours and unlimited choice of bespoke colour options available too, customers can further add value by adding colour into the mix. But that’s just the start. When you offer the Genesis Collection you have the opportunity to join the exclusive Genesis Installer Network (GIN). All member companies can benefit from a comprehensive support package which
includes consumer lead generation, brochure support and samples. Plus, you’ll benefit from industry-leading service levels, enhanced margins and reputation. It’s a compelling package of benefits that can help drive quality throughout your business and with opportunities in many areas to join this nationally growing network, there has never been a better time to get in touch. If you’re an ambitious installer who wants to come away from the price war and offer your customers a range of beautifully designed products that have been designed to add value to your business, then we need to talk! The first of the five debates that were held through the day and which were hosted by Glass News’ Editor, Chris Champion, tackled the issues around the anti-plastic movement. The main question being whether the PVC-U sector is doing enough around sustainability and recycling and what it means for aluminium and timber. Director of Membership for FENSA, Chris Beedel; Director of Technical Services at Reynaers, John McCombe; John Arkley; General Manager of Eurocell Recycling and Sunil Patel, Managing Director of Unique Windows discussed the role manufacturers and installers have to play as we move towards more energy efficient, sustainable homes and environmentally friendly products. This panel was the first to experience Sli.do, an audience interaction tool for meetings, events and conferences that offers interactive Q&A, live polls and insights about the audience. This proved to be a valuable tool allowing the audience to submit questions to the panels during the debates and was used for a number of polls during the Summit. Purplex’s Sam Cross introduced the speakers and Royal Bank of Scotland’s Neil Parker talked about Navigating the Brexit

to the potentially catastrophic impact on consumer spending and discussed whether Brexit could throw the UK into another recession, or whether we can ride out the storm and get on with the job. Andrew Scott talked about Marketing and Lead Generation and considered whether the industry can avoid becoming casualties of this sea-change generated by how the consumer has changed the way they shop. The debate on Regulations, Accreditations and Rogue Traders covered new legislation in the industry and specifically the fire regulations in the aftermath of the Grenfell tragedy. Industry accreditations were put in the spotlight following a series of high profile business failures and how the industry is tackling rogue traders was discussed. GGF Commercial’s Anda Gregory, GGF’s Technical Officer, Adrian Blaydon; BSI’s Mark Barsby and Andy Clegg from Fenestrology were the ones faced with these issues.

GLASS

A DOOR OF OPPORTUNITY The popularity of glass in office and other environments means that installers are often faced with fitting and maintaining glass panels and doors, but how can they do so efficiently and safely while ensuring a quality, aesthetically pleasing finish, asks Simon Boocock, Managing Director of CR Laurence? Glass is increasingly being specified for a variety of commercial situations, from offices and restaurants to hotels and hospitals. This is unmistakably a material that is being chosen as much for its practical qualities as for the aesthetic advantages it offers. The reasons for this become clear as soon as the advantages of this material are analysed: glass combines light, transparency and appearance with practical features such as thermal insulation, solar control, acoustics, fire protection, safety and security. And that is not to mention the physical versatility of glass which can literally be chosen to work alongside any other material and within any setting. Open-plan offices are a good example of where glass is being used to its full advantage commercially. Open-plan offices make effective use of available floor space and give the illusion of light and depth
in compact situations which accounts for their popularity. However, such spaces are not without their drawbacks, most of them from a practical viewpoint. Large expanses of space with lots of people in them tend to be noisy and lack privacy. What is required is a way of creating partitions and zoning specific areas, creating quiet areas and improving the overall acoustics, without losing any of the benefits that an open-plan environment offers. Glass partitions are increasingly being specified as a successful solution, creating a high-end aesthetic while also being a highly practical way of creating a bright, spacious working environment and enhancing the office’s acoustics. They can also be used to form inner offices, creating a sense of
privacy for meetings while still enabling those willing to integrate with the wider setting. For specifiers and installers, the good news is that, with the right systems, such partitions are straightforward to fit, even retrospectively enabling the open-plan space to be easily adapted to suit changing requirements. A dry-glazed system will be mess and hassle-free to fit, for example, keeping disruption to a minimum for the client. Choosing a system with thin profiles means that the architectural hardware will barely be noticed and when it is opting for an on-trend finish such as matt black creates a stylish, cohesive look in the modern setting. Above all, a system specially designed for office partitions will
“Glass partitions are increasingly being specified as a successful solution, creating a high-end aesthetic while also being a highly practical way of creating a bright, spacious working environment and enhancing the office’s acoustics.” make installation straightforward, enabling the feeling of openness and light created by large glazed walls simple to achieve in practically any space. For wall-to-glass or glass-to-glass applications look for systems whereby the height of hinged doors can be easily adjusted and the doors can be installed in mounted ceiling profiles. This will enable the gaping joint between the glass door, side panel and top light to be closed, making the application acoustically viable. Where acoustics is an important consideration, take note of the thickness of the glass, with systems that can accommodate insulating glass to a thickness of at least 28mm preferable. This will insulate sound up to 42dB, allowing people to work undisturbed by noise around them. It is not just the systems themselves that specifiers and installers should be aware of either. Upgrading tool bags to include some essential pieces of kit will save time and improve efficiency too. A vacuum ratchet tensioning kit will ensure the glass panels can be easily placed and pulled together, while avoiding the use of silicone sealant with solutions such as polycarbonate joints that simply clip on the glass will result in a clean, neat and quick finish. Such solutions overcome many of the practical challenges of installing glass partitioning in commercial environments such as offices, creating an upmarket and harmonious ambience. CUSTOMERS CHOOSE ONLINE YMCA - THE EUROGLAZE WAY TRAINING IN BIGGER NUMBERS Just weeks after it announced an 8% increase in customer numbers in 2019, BM Aluminium has reported a significant shift towards online training for new customers on its LogiKal software. Technical Implementation Manager Perry Mace has analysed the figures and says that more than half of its new customers are now choosing online rather than site based training. He explains: “This is a much higher figure than in 2018 and obviously reflects the fact that our online training is such good value and so user friendly.”
“We conduct the training over the phone using the Teamviewer software and we talk customers through every aspect of the LogiKal modules they will be using, demonstrating each stage as we go. Customers are used to having their software installed remotely and the feedback we have is really positive, with most commenting on how easy and efficient this is.” BM Aluminium says that online training is particularly beneficial for new customers with one LogiKal license and also for existing customers as a way of training new starters. Perry adds: “This is obviously the most cost effective route for training in small numbers and we’re now doing at least two online training sessions for customers a week to keep up with demand.” BM Aluminium continues to offer customers a flexible range of options when it comes to LogiKal training though, with a choice of sessions online, on site or at its dedicated training facility at its Tewkesbury head office.

INDUSTRY AWARDS
The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
VEKA SEES SPECTRAL
SHORTLISTED FOR G19 AWARD
VEKA UK is proud to have been shortlisted for the G19 ‘New Product of the Year’ Award with innovative, new ultramatt surface finish ‘SPECTRAL’. The G19 Awards will take place on November 29th at the London Hilton on Park Lane, and claiming finalist status this year is arguably more impressive than ever, considering that the number of entries was up by 80% for 2019. Industry-leading PVCu systems supplier VEKA UK unveiled its unique SPECTRAL finish in four striking colours at this year’s FIT Show, where it was hailed the ‘star of the stand’. Marketing Director Dawn Stockell explains: “Available in Graphite Black, Anthracite Grey, Platinum Grey and Umbra Grey, SPECTRAL is unlike anything else in the industry and is exclusive to VEKA Group within the PVCu profile industry. It uses ground-breaking technology to create an ultrasmooth, ultramatt finish with unrivalled performance benefits. “SPECTRAL has already had great feedback from our customers and we’re proud to see it shortlisted for G19 Product of the Year. A huge amount of work went into its creation and it’s a pleasure to see that ‘officially’ recognised and celebrated. “Having identified a trend towards smooth finishes that emulate aluminium style as opposed to the traditional wood look, VEKA invested in R&D to develop a new, highly durable matt surface finish to appeal to changing customer needs.
FINALIST STATUS FOR MODPLAN LTD Modplan Ltd has been confirmed as a finalist at this years’ National Fenestration Awards in the category of Fabricator/ Manufacturer 2019. Neil Gater, Marketing Manager of Newport-based Modplan Ltd, said: “Everyone at Modplan is delighted to have been shortlisted for the Fabricator/ Manufacturer award. This nomination celebrates the hard work and effort by our team and the support of our voting customers and supply partners.” The popular National Fenestration Awards are the industry’s fastest growing, independent awards event. Launched in 2013 and now into its seventh campaign, the National Fenestration Awards aims to be the fairest, all-inclusive fenestration event, rewarding the very best in the sector and voted by the participation of the industry. The voting closes on October 4th and the winners are announced during ‘winners week’, which starts week commencing 7th October, 2019. Modplan offers a comprehensive product portfolio to help add value to their customers’ businesses with the unparalleled advantage of their manufacturing excellence and partnership approach. Neil concludes: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted and wish all finalists the best of luck.” For more information, visit http://www.fenestrationawards.co.uk/ fabricator-manufacturer-2019/
“It uses next generation surface technology to create an extraordinary finish that simply cannot be matched by any other matt PVCu surface on the market. It is highly scratch resistant, has anti-fingerprint properties and is also extremely resistant to UV light, extreme weather conditions and harsh chemicals. Dirt can be wiped away with ease, for a product that stays beautiful for longer.
Recognised as innovative system solutions suppliers for the UK glass sector both companies have been recognised by customers for their hard work and quality standards.
With the National Fenestration Awards being industry led, this reinforces the reputation of the companies in a fair and open way.
“We’re delighted to be shortlisted and we’re pleased to see a number of our partners shortlisted in their respective categories too. Best of luck to all the nominees! We’re looking forward to another great night celebrating our industry’s finest in November.”
Steve Goble, Managing Director HEGLA UK comments, “As awards go, this is the one you want to win. It demonstrates the high standards set by HEGLA and the 17 years of self-motivation and hard dedication given by the UK team. It makes us very proud to have been acknowledged by the industry.”

Hot on the heels of HEGLA’s ‘Best In Show’ success at GlassBuild 2019, the Bystronic Hegla Preferred Partnership has once again been nominated in the best Machinery Company Award with the NFAs.
The preferred partnership union brings together the best of both worlds with engineering design and customer services kept as priorities. With the awards requiring both nomination and voting for by peers in the industry, Steve Goble believes that to have been nominated again, there is evidently great belief in the products and the customer support.
“By absorbing rather than reflecting light, SPECTRAL offers a denser, richer quality of colour, and because it is velvet to the touch, it feels just as good as it looks.

INDUSTRY AWARDS
The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
EMPLAS NAMED DOUBLE-AWARD FINALIST AT G19 Emplas has been named as a double award finalist at the G-Awards 2019 for its commitment to innovation in customer service and support and training. Held on the 29th November at the Hilton on London’s Park Lane, the event celebrates invention in service and product offer in the glazing industry. Emplas has been recognised in two categories this year including the Training and Development Initiative of the Year and highly competitive Customer Care Initiative of the Year categories. John Leary, Sales and Marketing Director, Emplas, said: “As a team we work very hard to continuously improve upon each and every element of what we do. That goes far beyond product quality to customer service, support and training. “That’s included looking out how we can use integrated cloud-based technologies and IT to drive continuous improvement in customer experience, to the development of our people and our customers, through training and the creation of shared resources including the new Emplas Product Specification Guide. “It means a huge amount to everyone here that the hard work put in by the team has been recognised and we have an opportunity to celebrate it with the industry as a whole.” Emplas unveiled its new Product Specification and Customer Support Guide at the end of this summer. At more than 270 pages, it brings each and every aspect of Emplas’ offer into a single tool, in addition to providing a comprehensive overview of regulations and specifications from WERs to CE Marking. This is being used by Emplas as a foundation for its training programmes, from apprenticeships to how customers featuring introductory and detailed guidance on regulation and compliance through to window and door performance. “The Product Specification and Customer Support Guide is the basis for inhouse training and our customer support
programme”, John explained. “It’s used to build understanding of product capabilities, limitations, specifications and regulatory requirements. It's a single training tool for us and our customers.” Emplas has been shortlisted for the Customer Care Initiative of the Year for the way in which it has employed IT to deliver an exponential shift in customer experience, by utilising it to not only facilitate delivery, but also measure all aspects of performance. This focus on measurement extends to all Emplas customer ‘touch-points’. This includes everything from how long it takes the customer service team to answer the phone – now answered within five rings in 98% of calls – to receipt of online orders, which in 98% of placements are turned around in less than 24hours. John said: “We’re what we’re doing is pretty unique within the industry and even outside of it. We’re using IT in the measurement, evaluation and refinement of everything we do. It gives us the visibility in the short term to identify and respond to any issues in production or our service offer before they impact on the customer. “It also, however, provides a foundation for continuous improvement of our process, our people, their development, and our organisation culture – each individual element contributing to collective and continuous improvement in customer experience. “ A customer poll found more than two thirds of Emplas existing customers already gave the trade fabricator a 9 or 10 out of ten for support and service and a Net Promoter Score of 58.5%, where a positive score or NPS above 0 is considered ‘good’, +50 is ‘excellent’, and above 70 ‘world class’. “We’re on the right road”, John continued “Being able to celebrate that and what has been achieved so far with colleagues in the industry is brilliant and we very much look forward to seeing everyone at this year’s event.” For more information on Emplas visit www. emplas.co.uk , email info@emplas.co.uk or call 01933 674880.

SKYLIGHT & ROOF LANTERN EXPERT
DOUBLE G AWARDS
VELUX® OFFERS 90 DAYS OF REWARDS
NOMINATION FOR ATLAS Atlas Glazed Roof Solutions has been named as a finalist in not one, but two categories at the forthcoming G19 awards. The glazing industry’s prestigious and longeststanding awards event, the G Awards attract hundreds of entries from businesses throughout the industry, and this year Atlas is up for two awards - ‘New Product of the Year’ and ‘Promotional Campaign of the Year’.
The fully integrated marketing campaign behind Lantern 2.0 helped to propel this premium product to phenomenal success in its first year. Spreading the message that Atlas has set a new benchmark in glazed roofing, the campaign has been nominated for ‘Promotional Campaign of the Year’.
“Lantern 2.0 is the market-leading lantern and the response from the industry since its launch earlier this year has been amazing.”
“We’re absolutely thrilled to be nominated for two very sought after awards and we’re proud to take our place alongside the other finalists. We know the standard of entries this year is very high and we’re looking forward to a fantastic night in London when the winners are revealed!”
The G19 winners will be announced at the awards ceremony and gala dinner, which will be held at the London Hilton on 29 November.
Surrey-based Sherborne Ltd is an experienced Atlas installer and has fitted many Atlas Lantern 2.0 lanterns this year. Chris Long, managing director of Sherborne Ltd, added: “As a proud G16 Awards winner ourselves, we know that the awards are an important industry event. It comes as no surprise that Atlas has been nominated for two G awards – the new lantern looks magnificent and it’s exactly what homeowners want. It’s also incredibly quick and easy to fit, which is why installers love it. Atlas are very worthy award
finalists and we wish them the very best of luck on the night.”
The new Lantern 2.0 from Atlas features a fully aluminium, thermally broken ringbeam, which has been reduced in size by 55% to make it lighter, better looking and more thermally efficient than ever. The new lantern also incorporates a refined ridge topcap, which is 25% thinner than before, to achieve incredibly slim sightlines when viewed from both above and below. To give the lantern continued external elegance, the height of the ridge top cap has also been trimmed by nearly 50%.

The nomination for ‘New Product of the Year’ recognises the major advances that Atlas made in glazed lantern design when it launched Lantern 2.0 in January this year. Developed by a team of technical experts, Lantern 2.0 is the slimmest, lightest, finest looking and most thermally efficient lantern that Atlas has ever created.
Commenting on the double-award nominations, Gareth Thomas, sales and marketing director at Atlas Glazed Roof Solutions, said: “We put everything into creating this new generation roof lantern, which has really raised the bar, both in looks and performance. Lantern 2.0 is the market-leading lantern and the response from the industry since its launch earlier this year has been amazing.

LINIAR BOOSTS SALES TEAM TO HANDLE EXTRAORDINARY GROWTH
SAM CROSS CELEBRATES DECADE OF SERVICE FOR AWARD WINNING MARKETING AGENCY
Innovative PVCu systems company Liniar has today announced the appointment of Mike Hobson as Regional Sales Director within the Liniar team.
Sam Cross, account director at leading fullservice marketing agency Purplex, is celebrating ten years with the awardwinning firm.
direct mail, whereas today we have more than 70 staff and offer the full spectrum of marketing services including online lead generation, TV and radio.
Sam joined Purplex in February 2009, initially as a copywriter working on client campaigns, but he quickly progressed through the business and was appointed account director in 2014.
“The business has changed a lot in the last decade but our obsession with delivering results has always remained the same, and that is why we’ve been able to retain and attract so many clients.”
Hobson is highly experienced within the sector, having 19 years’ experience at Masco UK with Duraflex systems, and prior to that at Deceuninck and Plasmo. He joins Liniar at a time when two of Scotland’s largest fabricators have commenced manufacture of the system, with installers North of the border increasingly turning to the easy-to-fit window and door system. Add this to a consistent sales growth of more than 10% per year for the last 10 years, and it’s clear to see how Mike can add value to Liniar’s overall customer support experience.
Liniar Group Sales Director Nigel Bishop welcomes Mike to the fold, commenting, “Mike comes highly recommended to us, having a great reputation for ethics and core values very similar to those of Liniar. He’s been taken on to help customers develop their own sales, and will be supporting Howard Hirst as our customer base in the North continues to grow at a fast rate.” Mike has already been introduced to the Liniar product range and spent time with some of the brand’s key teams, so he’ll be able to hit the ground running. He’s delighted to be joining Liniar, saying, “Since its launch into the industry, the Liniar range has been seen as one of the most innovative window and door systems. Now I’ve spent a couple of weeks in
the business, I can confirm that it’s a philosophy that runs throughout the company, and this means the product range is second to none. “The investment made in the site, facilities, machinery, stock and people is clear, and there’s a passion about the range that’s obvious to see – I’m eager to get going and help even more fabricators, installers and specifiers understand how they can grow their own sales with Liniar.” READER ENQUIRY NO: 1019/0100
Today he is responsible for developing powerful multi-channel marketing strategies for some of Purplex’s largest clients. Sam comments on his decade of service: “Purplex has grown enormously over the past 10 years and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being part of this journey. When I first joined, we had seven staff and predominantly offered ‘traditional’ marketing services such as PR and
Andrew Scott, Managing Director at Purplex, comments: “Purplex is now firmly established as the leading marketing agency in the glazing and construction industries and Sam has been instrumental in our success. I’d like to thank him for his decade of service and look forward to seeing how his career develops over the next few years. Our next target is to reach 200 staff and I am working
closely with Sam and the senior management team to achieve this goal.” Purplex Marketing was founded in 2004 by Andrew Scott, who previously acquired, built and sold several successful businesses in the building products and home improvement sectors. The company has grown by at least 34% every year and was recently named ‘Best Construction Marketing Agency’ at the 2019 UK Enterprise Awards.
