20-YEAR

MILESTONE! 10 years may not sound like an overly long time but Owner and Publisher, Christina Shaw has been in publishing for around 30 years and her experience and knowledge was brought to Glass News when it was first published in 2011. As the industry knows, Glass News was not her first foray into publishing a glass and fenestration title. Christina started work at 16 on a farming newspaper and local newspaper for a Yorkshire based publisher in a job secured for her by her sister. Although she had been studying for her ‘A’ levels at school, a blazing row with a teacher who patently didn’t like her, meant she left school, there and then, and started work the very next day! Not like Christina at all to be that hasty or volatile and I’m assured no wine was involved!

She moved into advertising sales for around 6 years, moving on to the Worksop Trader newspaper and then the Sheffield Star before a spell with an advertising agency. An illness that saw Christina’s weight drop to 6 1/2 stone made her reassess her working life and, on the basis that life is too short to ignore your dreams, she decided to work for herself marketing for local companies, one being a conservatory company. INVESTING FOR THE FUTURE AND CREEPING TOWARDS NORMALITY, PLUS A CELEBRATION FOR GLASS NEWS From record low temperatures and enough snow to consider getting the skis out, suddenly, in mid- February, it seems like Spring. Warm sun, the birds in the garden making nesting noises and budding trees and bushes: I nearly got the mower out this morning but managed to fight off the urge and have a cup of coffee instead! What is clear, and it’s not the sudden onset of spring that brought it on, I’ve never seen so many domestic households having projects worked on. I have one neighbour building an eco-house in his garden, another just completed an aluminium conservatory and yet another having his windows replaced. Yes, it’s quite noisy around Champion Towers. However, all this activity lifts the spirit and it is certainly not just activities on my doorstep: wherever I go I don’t think I have ever seen as much refurbishment activity going on, and it’s all good for our industry. Now, with the vaccination programme going so well or, as it has been referred to: Boris’ Falklands, we must hope that this will be the end of lockdowns and a move towards normality. I don’t mean to be mean spirited but we can’t claim that the government has got everything right during this crisis. There were claims of ‘World beating test and trace systems’ (what happened to that?) and plenty of bull and bluster from government ministers but, credit where it’s due, and whether it is by luck or judgement, speedy mass vaccination may just be our saviour. Yes, this old git has had his first jab!

What is clear, and becomes clearer every day, as I speak with more and more people in our industry, a great number of companies have used these times wisely, putting themselves in an excellent position as some normality returns. New products and systems abound, and the more enlightened companies have both invested for the future and maintained a good marketing presence. Having been in marketing in some shape or form for some 56 years I was always taught that maintaining or increasing marketing spend in times of recession was the wise action. Some companies I have worked for recognised the wisdom of this whereas others simply cut off all spend and even made the marketing team redundant just to save money, only to find that the ramp up in staff and spend as the climate changed cost more than they had saved, and they were playing catch up. All very short sighted and usually done out of fear rather than rational reasoning. Dare I say they were usually companies where an FD had become MD? Nevertheless, our industry is booming, but will that wane with supply issues? We have all heard about issues with steel on both supply and price, so too with polymer. What is now raising its head is, of course, glass. I’ve heard of fabricators looking at the Far East and Australasia for supply and this is despite the problems associated with containers and a rapid raising of prices. Is this to do with containers being in the wrong place? There’s an awful lot sitting around at Felixstowe! Have a look at Cold Calling this month which is about supply issues. As you will see from the front page, we’re celebrating the 10 year anniversary of Glass News. I won’t repeat everything that is in the lead story but I will take the opportunity to congratulate Christina Shaw, the owner and publisher of Glass News. With 12 years owning another title in this industry plus the 10 years of Glass News she must be the most experienced publisher in our industry…you’ll note I didn’t say oldest! Finally, we couldn’t have reached the 10 year milestone without your help, both as readers and contributors to Glass News. We look forward to working with everyone in the industry as we tackle the next 10 years. Hold on a minute, that’ll put me well into my 80s!

met Justin 8 years ago and we work together in a purpose-built office from our home in Tickhill. Justin has been invaluable and is now a Director of all three of our companies. Between us we have three children, Sophie, Chloe and Olly, so it’s been a challenge during lockdown!”

Continued from page 1... “I saw an opportunity,” said Christina, “to launch a magazine that was published nationally but also had specific regional coverage that gave the choice to customers of areas into which they wished to promote their products. A choice of local or national advertising.” Christina owned and ran that company very successfully for 12 years. “In launching Glass News,” said Christina, “I wanted to do something different. With so many glossy trade mags out there how could I differentiate myself from them? My background in publishing newspapers gave me the answer and I felt that a newspaper for the industry would be, well – more newsworthy.” It turns out that Christina was right and Glass News soon found a niche within the trade publications, supported from the start by regular advertisers from her former publication who rallied around the new title.

nowhere to live (my parents offered but with a four year old son it wasn’t ideal). I was lucky enough to have a cousin who had a house for rent, so I took it, got moved in and started my business plans for Glass News - all from my kitchen table. I did the sales, the editorial, dealt with the PR's and the accounts for at least the first year, to keep costs to a minimum.” She continued: “I still manage some sales, but I now have a right-hand woman to help me, the very lovely Emma Champion. Justin Lazenby handles the PR’s which also free’s me up to work across all of our titles. It’s a relief to know there are other people to hand to help produce our expanding portfolio. I

With 2 years of Glass News under her belt, Christina looked for help to continue the newspaper’s expansion. “I commandeered Chris Champion to join as Editor of Glass News,” said Christina, ”Chris was ready to retire from Distinction Doors at the grand old age of 65 but, over a lunch to finalise some advertising, I floated the idea of joining Glass News as Editor-in-Chief. Little did he know at that lunch that I had the ulterior motive of asking him to come and work with me!” Since that time Christina and Chris have travelled the country visiting customers, conducting interviews and factory visits and generally helping companies market themselves and their products. Christina comments: “It’s been a bit of a double act and we have had a lot of fun and, if you know Chris, lots and lots of laughs!” Christina extended her publishing empire, adding Fenestra Build (established in 2015); Improve Magazine (established in 2020)

“I can’t thank those regular advertisers enough,” commented Christina. “Their support got Glass News up and running and the support from the trade in general allowed us to grow very rapidly. To be fair, life at that time was very hard. I had

and A Window Into Aluminium (launched in Feb this year) to the portfolio. The latter two were developed during lockdown while the glass and glazing industry was shut down last year. The print circulation of Glass News has always been in the order of 10,000 copies. However, during lockdown, the company looked at how circulation could be improved and reach people via a digital audience. Our Editor, Chris Champion, was conducting more and more interviews via Zoom and what better way to get these in front of people, than a digital publication? So, the Glass News model changed during the 2020 lockdowns, but changed for the better as there is now a print edition which is back in circulation, plus the added advantage of a 20,000 email database, covering fabricators, installers, builders and trade counters. Now two versions of each edition of Glass News are produced - the interactive digital version, with the live interviews, and the print edition. A You Tube channel has also been set up that carries a wide variety of videos and interviews. Lockdown gave Glass News the opportunity to work a lot harder with social media. platform for a business-to-business title. He has increased the followers to almost 7500 and invests time posting interviews and unique material such as the regular Cold Calling feature, Face to Face interviews and Voice of the Industry contributions. If it’s a hot story, you can rest assured Justin will have seen it and got it out onto social media! And all this interspersed with his invoicing and accounts related role. It’s a small but very much ‘hands on’ team at Glass News. “A special thanks must go to Kate Carnall who has been my graphic designer since the launch of Glass News. Kate also worked with me on the former glass and glazing title and has remained a stalwart throughout! She is tenacious, supportive, professional and my goodness is she quick! At Glass News we believe in proofing our editorial features and adverts, prior to publication, to ensure our customers are happy and the information we publish is correct. We turn things around quickly and efficiently and the result is a happy customer,” commented Christina.

"Despite a heavy workload across all the titles in the publishing portfolio, Christina is also a great supporter of the industry as a whole, particularly if it involves having a glass in hand or is charity based." in August 2017, which consisted of 12 ladies who raised in excess of £100,000 between them, for the charity. We could never have achieved this without the fantastic support team - you know who you are! The challenge was to canoe 100 miles and cycle 120 miles, over a 7 day period, with an

abseil thrown in! It was a once in a lifetime experience and one which I, and all of the team, will never forget.”

Thirsty work

We did it! The finish line!

Just another result of the Covid lockdown has been the delay of the second ladies event. “I would like to wish all of them the very best of luck,” says Christina, “and I will

be following their journey every stroke/rep/ stride/of the way. I shall feel their pain and tears!” With 10 years under Glass News’ belt, the next 10 years beckon. Who knows what additional titles may find their way into the publishing portfolio in the future? “In the meantime, we aim to continue to support all our friends and colleagues in the industry and we thank them for supporting the industry’s newspaper, Glass News,” said Owner and Publisher, Christina Shaw.

The company also works with a number of digital agencies to help achieve its goals. Graffika Media Design manage the weekly mailer and the website for Glass News, as well as the new title, Improve Magazine. Despite a heavy workload across all the titles in the publishing portfolio, Christina is also a great supporter of the industry as a whole, particularly if it involves having a glass in hand or is charity based. “One of the things I love about the industry is the unrelenting pursuit of charity work, in particular, GM Fundraising.” Said Christina. “Gary Morton, the industry stalwart and all round ginger hero, founded the organisation which helps raise funds for Hope House Children’s Hospices, who make sure that no one faces the death of their child alone. They support more than 750 local families who are either caring for a terminally ill child, or whose child has died. EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: APEER

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

LUMI ALUMINIUM. GREAT TO LOOK AT AND EASY TO FIT. Catching up with Asa McGillian, Managing Director of Ballymena based Apeer Doors and the Lumi frameless window and doors system, Glass News’ Editor, Chris Champion, asks him about the launch of Lumi Aluminium. Apeer is a brand that is well known for a whole range of composite residential doors and when the company developed Lumi in 2015 it was a significant departure from its core products. How did that come about and what was the inspiration that led to designing a frameless window and door system? Asa explains the origins of Lumi and how, in 2015, the products were brought to market. Talking of markets, does a modern frameless system simply suit a modern design? It’s an emphatic no. Asa reveals the wide span of applications for Lumi and how both windows and doors have been fitted to a whole range of buildings, from ancient thatched cottages to today’s new build and commercial application to a castle near Sheffield, not forgetting the replacement market. To look at Lumi windows they immediately shout ‘aluminium’. But this is not the case: the first Lumi windows used a fibreglass composite frame whereas the Lumi sliding doors have always been fabricated in aluminium. So there is plenty of experience of aluminium fabrication in-house and it’s not surprising that the windows should follow suit. Has this had anything to do with architects’ and specifiers’ dislike of PVCu? Not really says Asa, and indeed it has not stopped the rapid growth of Lumi windows since 2015. Where did it all start? It may seem strange for a door company to develop this frameless window but the launch of the Modo door in 2013 started it all with the realisation that there was an appetite for high end products. Asa tells the story of his neighbour having PVCu replacement windows installed and, although they looked very nice, it made him wonder if this really was the pinnacle of window design and manufacture. He experimented with a completely new look of bonding the glass to a timber frame and this concept was put together in 2014. And the reaction? Some slightly unkind comments said it looked like a

microwave oven! But the clean lines and modernistic look suited large windows and was ideal for high-end self-build houses. Lumi 2 double glazed replacement windows with PVCu outer frames and GRP sashes came to the market in 2017. Lift and slide doors using an aluminium frame and rooflights in GRP were added to the range in 2018. Asa says that perhaps the windows should have been in aluminium from the start although I, for one, thought they were aluminium anyway! So why aluminium now? Asa admits that he had no idea that aluminium would gain the popularity it has, and now, with improved isolators and thermal breaks, aluminium makes sense. But what about fabricating and fitting? We find that fabricating aluminium is much easier than fibreglass and doesn’t ruin the tooling and machines instantaneously! Fitting is much the same, only easier. Much lighter and always very rigid with the large range of sizes and different sightlines from 50mm, through 60mm and 72mm, windows now become a 2 man fix as opposed to 4 man with heavy lifting gear. The windows are fitted from the inside so no scaffold requirements either and it all makes it very appealing to fitters. Has Lumi aluminium moved the price point? The answer is no. They’ve removed various options such as the colours simply because standard whites, greys and blacks are all that are ordered. You may think that Lumi is just an architect’s dream but that is not the case. Lumi has found that advertising direct to the public is the way forward and let the imaginative homeowner specify Lumi to their builder and architect. Price is always important and Lumi is around 2.5 times the price of PVCu frames – about the same as other aluminium systems. So Lumi aluminium costs the same as other aluminium systems but has that ‘wow’ look. Great. But can we get Lumi in these post Brexit and Covid days? Asa McGillian confirms that they are getting both raw materials in, and finished product out of Northern Ireland. Has it proved a problem? Not really. It’s clear that the team at Lumi are well up on the new regulations and paperwork required for both importing and exporting goods to Northern Ireland, even to the point that they are helping suppliers with their paperwork or sending their own vehicles backwards and forwards and completing all the necessary paperwork themselves. This attitude is positive and it works: they’ve had a great start to 2021.

GQA QUALIFICATIONS REACHES

20-YEAR MILESTONE Most in the industry today are well aware of the high levels of training and certification that are now part of the landscape when it comes to the manufacture and installation of windows and doors. Long gone are the days when the industry worked to self-set standards. Today's industry is governed by stringent building regulations to which those manufacturing and installing windows and doors must adhere, and most companies are investing widely in their staff, ensuring they have the right skills to do their work to the highest standards. For those carrying out key roles such as installation, there is the opportunity for them to be independently certified to demonstrate that they are qualified to carry out their role. The result is not only peace of mind for homeowners, but an on-going rise in standards in the industry, which benefits all parties.

Playing a key role in driving up these standards is GQA Qualifications, the fenestration industry’s leading awarding and qualifications writing body. 2021 sees the start of their 20th year of operation. The ethos of GQA is that working towards qualifications and encouraging learning opportunities are vitally important if the fenestration industry is to continue to improve and to set the highest standards, and to make it appealing as an industry to young people looking for a career after education to help address the skills gap that has been prevalent in the construction industry for so long. GQA is a major advocate of vocational careers and qualifications for the industry, and in the 20 years since it began operating has grown the network of approved centres delivering its qualifications from an initial 15 to over 200, and now employs 21 staff in total from an initial starting point of just seven.

“In the last 20 years GQA has issued a staggering 142,00 qualifications.” It is a sign of the progress made by the industry, that at its outset, GQA offered just 11 qualifications. Today it offers 238 and over the past 20 years, they have issued a staggering 142,000 qualification certificates.

“We are committed to seeing our industry hone the skills of its tradespeople so that homeowners and commercial clients can always be confident of receiving the best quality of workmanship and service, and to making our industry a genuine career choice for youngsters leaving the education sector”.

Commenting on the milestones achieved, Mick Clayton, Chief Executive Officer of GQA says: "As we enter our 20th operational year, I am very proud of what GQA has achieved and how it has grown. It is clear that the appetite for learning has never been greater amongst the tradespeople in our industry and despite the challenges of the pandemic I see significant growth in this during 2021. For GQA, as a leading awarding body, it is something we are delighted to see, and it is fantastic that that desire for self-improvement is leading people to think more about formal achievement in the form of qualifications or taking accredited courses." “We are committed to seeing our industry hone the skills of its tradespeople so that homeowners and commercial clients can always be confident of receiving the best quality of workmanship and service, and to making our industry a genuine career choice for youngsters leaving the education sector”.

PARENTS' VIEW OF FENESTRATION INDUSTRY AS OFFSPRING'S CAREER CHOICE Among many partnerships it is involved in GQA is a major supporter of the Building Our Skills – Making Fenestration a Career of Choice campaign to attract new entrants to the market. On the subject of making fenestration a career of choice, homeowners may be very interested to learn of the results of a YouGov survey commissioned by GQA into the attitudes of over 1,000 parents with school-age children concerning university attendance and vocational training. The survey results revealed that over 60% of respondents agreed that for decades we have been recruiting too many young people onto university courses that do nothing to improve their life chances or help with their career goals. In addition, over 75% agreed that vocational training, careers and/or vocational qualifications could be beneficial to young people as an alternative career path to going to university. Heartening for GQA was the survey's revelation regarding how the fenestration industry is perceived by the parents questioned. Over half of respondents were not averse to their children one day entering this industry. It is to be hoped that year on year more and more parents will encourage their children down this route when they are of employable age. ALL UNDER ONE ROOF

WITH MODPLAN

With the continued growth in the solid conservatory roof market, leading trade fabricator Modplan has confirmed that their Leka Solid Roof System provides the perfect opportunity to take a strategic advantage.

Heidi Sachs, Managing Director at Modplan explains: “For some time there has been a steady growth for solid conservatory roofs but we have seen a huge spike in demand following the pandemic. This is not totally surprising as consumers have spent more time in their homes and are now scrutinising their living spaces

10

more than ever before. As a result, the number of retrofit solid roofs and new build conservatory extensions has risen dramatically as witnessed by our record sales.” Heidi is also clear that the Leka Solid Roof System offers many benefits to tap into this growth. She says: “Leka products provide a clean, contemporary solution in a way that other warm roof systems simply can’t match and because they offer a lightweight construction, they are ideal for retrofit conservatories and give installers a competitive advantage too.” Leka solid roofs are available in a range of designs including Edwardian, Victorian, Lean-to and orangery options so there is a roofing solution to suit all conservatory styles. And for customers wanting additional light options, glass panels are

now available that fit seamlessly into the Leka solid roof for design flexibility. Leka roofs are up to 40% lighter than other replacement roof solutions. This means that in most retro-fit projects, the existing conservatory frames are able to take the weight of the Leka System without needing additional reinforcement. Aside from the versatility it offers, Leka solid roofs are easy to install, typically taking just two or three days, including removing the old conservatory roof. This is around half the time it takes to install a traditional solid roof replacement. As well as offering the full range of Leka products including the Leka Orangery roof and Leka Xi modular system, Modplan manufactures a complete range of conservatory roofs, so installers can maintain a diverse product portfolio.

Products include the Vertex roof which offers a one-piece peripheral main beam with integral gutter and can be supplied with a choice of polycarbonate, glass or tile effect panels. Also available is the Wendland range and LivinRoof by Ultraframe. All roofs are manufactured at Modplan’s dedicated roofing plant at their multimanufacturing site near Newport, Gwent. Heidi concludes: “Capitalising on the opportunities means understanding the trends. At the moment, there’s a drive to create more space at home, which means offering home improvement products that deliver. The Leka solid conservatory roofs are perfect examples and with Modplan you have a trade supplier who can help installers make the most of these opportunities”. Tel: 01495 246844 www.modplan.co.uk

SAFER BI-FOLDING DOOR DELIVERIES... INCREASE IN SALES WITHIN Dear Chris, Handling and moving big, heavy and cumbersome Aluminium Bi-folding doors is not a task you would expect just anyone to do, but according to Made for Trade this is something the industry has turned a blind eye to for many years. Fraught with danger this is an accident waiting to happen when drivers are expected to offload often large doors on site unaided. Making for a safer way is a question Made for Trade have grappled with for years although they have done everything possible to ensure safety of drivers and staff at all times and thankfully no incidents of anyone being hurt.

With ever increasing sales volumes of Aluminum Bi Folding doors, the decision was taken to add 12 new delivery vehicles to the fleet and with it setting the engineering department the task of improving the safe on and offloading of the Bi-folding doors.... this has successfully been achieved with a full re-design of the way vehicles are loaded and offloaded. All doors are lowered to ground level with an onboard crane thus avoiding all manual handling and possible injury to new and existing customers nationwide and valued employees. Richard Gaunt Made for Trade

THE FENESTRATION INDUSTRY

Dear Chris, The fenestration industry has seen an enormous increase in sales over the last 9 months and I believe this places the industry in a strong position to welcome and embrace change as we continue into 2021. For that change to benefit the industry as a whole, we must widen our consideration to include the other businesses in the industry rather than focussing just on ourselves. The businesses that make up a supply chain are not singular entities, rather they are part of an ecosystem that supports and is supported by the other businesses above and below them. It makes sense that decisions are made that strengthens these connections rather than adding undue strain. Freighting components and raw materials into the UK from China and the Far East has gone up nearly 270%, and when sea freighting isn’t available, the price of air freighting is exorbitant. These panic-driven decisions are not sustainable. These supply issues are not permanent, and we will be able to go back to meeting our usual lead times at some point in the not-too-distant future. In the meantime, there is a quick fix that will ease the pressure we are all under: lengthening lead times across the industry.

Increasing lead times is a way that we as individual businesses can offer breathing space to both ourselves and the other businesses in the industry. If we extend delivery times, we would be avoiding the current “feast or famine” situation that we’re all in now. When materials arrive, there is a glut of fulfilled orders but when supply slows, businesses are back to not being able to deliver. This yo-yoing is frustrating for everyone in the supply chain and is especially exasperating for our ultimate customers who have been assured of delivery times and are bored with hearing about COVID-related delays. The cost of buying raw materials from Asia is going to increase and it will inevitably be in a permanent way. We don’t need to hamstring the industry by overspending on the delivery of these goods at their current prices. Bring lead times up to two weeks (or longer) across the board and so that we all know where we stand without the stress of failing to meet deadlines. I know we can, and will all get through this by working collectively and collaboratively, and that ultimately by doing this, our industry will come out stronger and more resilient. Yours sincerely, Giovanni Laporta Inventor and Innovator at Smart Ready®

Leading trade fabricator Modplan has become a member of Manufacturing Wales, a prestigious association representing the vision and ambitions of manufacturers across Wales.

This year’s theme is ‘Invention and Innovation’ and Senior is inviting the industry to join in the conversation and celebrate the versality of aluminium, looking at the material’s unique properties and the interesting ways it has been embraced throughout history.

Both David Burles and Heidi Sachs of Modplan are delighted to have become members. Heidi said: “We are immensely proud of our Welsh heritage and delighted to have gained membership. It’s got all the heritage detailing of our last door but with the huge benefits of a solid timber core composite door for security. FENSA OFFERS FREE PAS 2030 TRAINING TO BECOME A GREEN HOMES GRANT APPROVED INSTALLER FENSA, in partnership with Trade Engine, is offering a limited number of free PAS 2030 training for installers looking to become approved suppliers for the Green Homes Grant Scheme. There is a total of 50 places available and FENSA Approved installers should apply for PAS 2030 training and assistance with Trade Engine before Friday 14th May 2021 to see if they are eligible. In addition, Trade Engine can provide £750 of Government funding towards certification costs with FENSA. The Green Homes Grant scheme, a £2bn initiative by government to improve energy efficiency in UK homes – including upgrading doors and windows – has been extended until the end of March 2022.

energy efficiency improvements, up to a limit of £5,000 (or 100% of the costs up to £10,000 for eligible households on low incomes). In addition to funding one primary measure (insulation or low carbon heat), the grant can be used to fund, for example, new double or triple glazing or secondary glazing, and new energy efficient doors. In order to qualify for the grant, homeowners must ensure the work is undertaken by TrustMark-approved installers holding the relevant PAS 2030 standard to install energy efficient measures.

Which is why, as a boost for its members, FENSA, the government-authorised competent person’s scheme monitoring regulation compliance for replacement windows and doors, is offering free PAS 2030 training to the first 50 FENSA-approved installers to apply before the May deadline. “PAS 2030 is the specification required by Government for Installation companies to comply with under the Green Homes Grant Scheme and potentially for future government schemes for energy efficiency,” said Chris Beedel, FENSA’s Head of

Membership. “So free training is not just a great opportunity to take advantage of the Green Homes Grant scheme, it’s a chance for our installers to consider whether they wish to become more involved in this and future Government schemes”. The training will be delivered by Trade Engine, which has supported businesses in construction, energy efficiency and domestic retrofit with their Quality Management requirements for eight years. “We’re delighted to be partnering with FENSA,” said Andrew Brown, Trade Engine’s Managing Director. “We’re able to offer all FENSA members a route to certification and compliance that is heavily subsidised by BEIS, as well as supporting their transition to the delivery of projects that will be compliant with PAS 2035.”

System 17-65

Facilitating multi-storey construction Metal Technology have launched their new System 17-65, 65mm Curtain Walling. Designed for use in high-rise or multi-storey applications, the system accommodates greater floor slab deflection and glass movement. Based on the successful System 17, 50mm Curtain Walling, this latest system also adopts the same stick built assembly process, with overlapping transom to mullion connections, and incorporates many of the same manufacturing and installation principles used within our System 17. Based on 65mm wide mullion and transom profiles, System 17-65 facilitates greater glass movement, caused by increased differential mullion movement often associated with large floor slab spans, greater floor slab deflection, taller glass units, and larger building movement often found in modern high-rise buildings.

The system is currently being utilised in conjunction with a newly developed flat pressure plate / cap finish to create an attractive, glazed façade for the new 50,000 sq ft, Grade A office complex at Ebrington in Derry/Londonderry. Designed by GM Design Associates and developed by Heron Bros, the office accommodation is of international standard, designed to attract and support the growth of high quality technology and knowledge-based business to the city. Ebrington Office Development || Derry/Londonderry

Imagery - GM Design Associates Ltd

The system incorporates a suite of structural mullion and transom profiles, ranging from 50mm to 225mm, along with a range of projecting cover cap options. A flat pressure cap also offers a cost effective alternative to silicone pointing while still accommodating increased building movement without compromising on glass cover and the performance of the system. The system can accommodate up to 54mm thick glass units, in 1mm increments, to facilitate a wide variety of double, and triple glazed units to help facilitate even the most demanding thermal, guarding and/or acoustic requirements. To complement its successful testing to CWCT weather performance and PAS 24 security standards, System 17-65 has also completed acoustic testing to BS EN ISO 10140-2 at the UKAS accredited test facility at Warrington Fire, using a variety of acoustic glazing configurations. RECORD-BREAKING £15M SALES PERIOD

FOR CLEARVIEW HOME IMPROVEMENTS

A Preston-based retail installation business has recorded its best ever sevenmonth period, with sales rocketing past £15m between June and December. Clearview Home Improvements tapped into major spikes in demand for contemporary extensions, conservatories, orangeries, windows and doors to hit a 67% increase over the same period in 2019 - success that was driven by a proactive sales and marketing campaign and virtual sales appointments. The company, which is part of the Conservatory Outlet Group, also saw two members of its sales team enjoy record-breaking figures in 2020, with both registering over £2m of annual sales. “It’s without a doubt the most successful period I’ve experienced since joining Clearview in 2011,” explained Gary Oakes, Sales Director at Clearview Home Improvements. “Achieving such a sustained period of success, during a time of genuine uncertainty, is testament to the hard work and pragmatism of the entire team. Nobody knew how the market was going to react after the first lockdown was announced, but we were confident in our ability to provide our customers with a first-class service and deliver exceptional value, irrespective of the fact that we couldn’t carry out home visits. He continued: “Our team spotted the change in consumer attitudes to spending more on home improvements during lockdown and were quick to maintain a proactive, multi-channel marketing

Whilst many businesses adopted a more conservative approach and ground to a halt, Clearview was able to generate enquiries in excess of 75% higher than its year-on-year totals throughout the first lockdown, with its ‘Stay-at-Home Sale’ campaign delivering a ready-made order book ahead of its return once the restrictions were lifted.

Greg Kane, CEO of Conservatory Outlet Group, continued: “The last twelve months have certainly been challenging, but the hard work of everyone from across the business has ensured the Clearview brand has come out the other side stronger than ever! From lead generation, lead appointing and showroom demonstrations, to sales presentations, sales leadership and everything in-between, this has been

AND THE WINNER IS...

Congratulations to Martin Bamford of Gutterclean for winning Freefoam’s first ‘Transformer’ competition for 2021. Martin used Freefoam Fortex Weatherboard cladding in Slate Grey when creating a new dormer on this smart bungalow in rural Wiltshire, which has certainly made a major transformation to the way the building looks.

“We’ve been fitting the Freefoam range for years. We have tried other brands in the past, but always come back to Freefoam. We like the way it fits together, the boards are solid and whatever job we are working on Freefoam always have the range of products we need. We recently changed supplier. Our stockists stopped selling Freefoam so the Freefoam Area Sales Manager helped us source another supplier. We’re really pleased with Master Plastics and relieved we can still get the Freefoam range.” As Freefoam Registered Installers Gutterclean offer the Freefoam extended Lifetime 50 year guarantee on white fascia, soffit and gutter to their customers. Gutterclean also offer a 10 year guarantee on their workmanship so the whole package means that homeowners feel reassured that they are getting a quality product professionally

installed. Martin commented “The Freefoam Guarantee definitely helps us sell our services. We know we’re providing a good product, which makes it easy for us to sell.” Martin concluded “We enjoy working with our customers to improve their homes. Projects like this dormer can make a real difference, we’re not only transforming homes, we’re making people’s lives more comfortable and easier.” www.freefoam.com

There is currently a big surge in home improvements around the UK, with people spending more time at home and wanting to transform their homes into a place that both looks good and works for their lifestyle. Extending homes, and adding dormer extensions like this one, are part of this trend. Gutterclean have seen an increase in requests for exterior cladding and regularly fit both the Single Shiplap woodgrain finish cladding and the Fortex embossed range. Using ultra low maintenance PVC cladding as an attractive exterior finish offers homeowners the perfect solution. Martin explained “This property already had a dormer extension to one side of the roof. With a growing family adding another dormer was the ideal solution. Working with a local joiner we created a really usable space that will need very little maintenance and look good for years. The Freefoam cladding is very easy to fit and comes with colour matching fitting trims which give is a nice neat finish.” Gutterclean have been trading since 2005 and been using Freefoam for nine years. The business was originally set up to offer a full gutter fitting, cleaning and maintenance service, but as demand grew Gutterclean extended to include fascia and soffit replacement too. Operating from Trowbridge, serving Wiltshire and the surrounding area, Gutterclean are also Freefoam Registered Installers sourcing all products from local supplier Master Plastics (SW) Ltd in Clevedon.

“The Freefoam Guarantee definitely helps us sell our services. We know we’re providing a good product, which makes it easy for us to sell.” 24

MFT’s announcement, along with other news of their product expansion is a strong indication of their industry position and growth plans throughout 2020-2021 and beyond. “For some time, we have been looking at the handling challenges presented by the loading and unloading of large heavy products from our wagons and we had some good design ideas of what we wanted to achieve. With sales dictating a need for more wagons to satisfy increasing delivery requirements we took the opportunity to kill 2 birds with one stone and had a custom fleet developed with local vehicle suppliers. Thankfully, it has not all been doom and gloom and there are many winners as a market driven by home improvements went stratospheric. With ongoing investment in new vehicles, additional staff and the expansion of their delivery coverage, Made for Trade really do mean business as they enter 2021 in a strong position with some exciting new developments on the brink of release into the market.

FLEET IMPROVEMENTS The new 12-tonne Rollaflex vehicles have been commissioned from a local vehicle supplier with the functional design concept provided by the engineering team at MFT. The brief was to come up with a costeffective loading and unloading solution which minimised the risks associated with manual lifting and provided a safe means of working at a height. Health and safety is one of MFT’s top priorities when it comes to the welfare of their staff and the safe delivery of their products. The logistics cycle starts off with the doors being moved from coded dispatch racks and loaded onto specially made stillages at floor level. As each door is placed onto the stillage a set of soft slings are fitted to predetermined safe positions depending on the style of door. Once all stillages are full, the wagons move into the loading positions,

the retractable curtain is drawn back, and the stillage is moved by forklift onto the wagon bed and locked into place. Once at the customers site, the driver conducts a risk assessment, cordons off the area and uses an articulated crane mounted to the vehicle bed for the safe and secure unloading of the door from the wagon to the ground in readiness for the customer to collect. The new design ensures that manual lifting of the doors is eliminated and that the operator is always safe, even when working from the unprotected wagon sides to attach the crane hook to the slings via a retractable barrier.

DELIVERY COVERAGE EXPANSION The addition of more vehicles to the fleet also allows MFT to increase their delivery coverage area to include several new postcodes in Scotland. This move, the implementation of the first phase of a larger growth plan, cements the company’s intention to provide their top class service to customers that had previously struggled to obtain MFT door products alongside the Korniche lantern roof which is delivered nationwide.

equivalent of 54dB; this noise difference will turn the sound of a diesel bus to a whisper.

Fitted in addition to an existing single, double or triple glazed window, secondary glazing is a most effective way of cutting out external noise. When correctly installed, sealed and set the optimum distance from the internal face of the primary window, it can reduce noise levels by up to 80% or the

Studies have shown just 65 dB of noise can be problematic, while levels between 70-125 dB can be painful (a passing motorcycle may reach 100 dB), or above that, outright unbearable.

For the best acoustic performance, secondary glazing is installed with a 150mm to 200mm gap from the main window. Where this gap cannot be achieved or for more challenging noise sources, acoustic laminated glass offers significant benefits.

Zoe Grafton, Trade Sales Manager at Granada Secondary Glazing explains how acoustic insulation can provide the solution – and a business opportunity for installers. COVID-19 restrictions have meant more time spent at home where the intrusion of outside noise has become more noticeable and, unwelcome for some.

Suitable for all property types, our slimline aluminium secondary glazing frames can be powder coated in over 200 RAL colours. Virtually invisible, it blends in with any interior décor. The Granada Glazing product range encompasses hinged, sliding and lift-out options. Full training and marketing support is available to installers across the UK.

Unlike sight or taste, hearing is a frequently underrated sense, but external sound can be more than an annoyance. Constant exposure to loud or distracting noises can have health consequences, from elevated heart rate and blood pressure to increased stress levels.

VEKA RECYCLING INVESTS IN NEW SILOS TO INCREASE CAPACITY AT STATE-OF-THE-ART PLANT VEKA Recycling has invested £150k in six new silos to increase storage capacity at its state-of-the-art Wellingborough recycling plant, the most advanced of its kind in Europe. The extra space created by the installation of the two 20m3 and four 10m3 silos, completed in January 2021, will increase efficiency by reducing the manual handling of product via forklift. This will greatly improve the flow of materials around the pioneering site, which is now fully operational following the completion of a phased, £15 million investment programme spanning three years. Simon Scholes, Managing Director at VEKA Recycling, said: “This latest investment in six new silos not only increases our

storage capacity in order to streamline our own operations but further illustrates the commitment of our organisation to increase the capacity for PVC-U recycling in the UK. “We have obtained planning permission for additional 20m3 silos at the plant, if and when required and, although installation is not imminent, there is plenty of future capacity available should VEKA Recycling decide to construct these later down the line.” The six new silos join an existing 130-tonne capacity silo installed by VEKA Recycling, in late 2019, to hold a significant proportion of the old window frames delivered to site prior to processing. Ultimately, the new silos will enable the organisation to recycle even greater amounts of waste PVC-U

product in order to achieve its objective to keep as many end-of-life PVC-U windows and doors out of landfill as possible. Simon Scholes added: “The recyclability of PVC-U is becoming a major selling point, as organisations – along with consumers – become increasingly aware of the impact of post-consumer waste on the environment. At VEKA Recycling we are absolutely determined to reduce this impact and our ongoing investment in our Wellingborough plant, which is the most advanced in Europe – and possibly the world, demonstrates that. “Having cost around £15 million and taken three years to complete, the plant is now fully operational and the unwavering commitment to the project from our German, family-owned parent company,

despite the UK leaving the EU and the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic, would suggest the future for PVC-U recycling is very bright indeed.” www.veka-recycling.co.uk

HERITAGE PROJECT BENEFITS FROM MORLEY GLASS FUNDING Leeds-based Morley Glass & Glazing has pledged £500 to help fund repairs to an important piece of Yorkshire’s World War One heritage. Morley’s contribution to the Yorkshire Trench is its first donation from its GreenVision Fund, where is uses the money it receives from supplying Saint-Gobain Glass with recycled glass cullet to support charities and support sustainable projects.

conditions in Flanders have led to serious damage to the trench, which until recently was accessible to the public.

campaign is crowdfunding the costs via a JustGiving page, which has already amassed over £3,000 in donations.

n initial estimate for repairs is £135,000, part of which will A be contributed by the city of Leper, which owns the site. The

Ian Short, managing director of Morley Glass & Glazing, commented: “Morley Glass is honoured to help preserve the memory of such heroic men. It would be a terrible shame for such an important piece of Yorkshire history to be lost. Together with our customers we have recycled 318 tonnes of post-consumer waste glass, saving 95,400 tons of Co2 emissions, and are looking for more charities and green initiatives to support with the money we receive for the cullet.”

Located just outside the Belgian town of Ypres, The Yorkshire Trench earned its name after it was manned and improved by the 49th West Riding of Yorkshire Division in 1915. The small section of trench is one of the very few World War One front line trenches that still exists in its original position, after being rediscovered by a group of amateur archaeologists in 1992. Now, a campaign led by Yorkshire historian John Morrison, is seeking to re-instate the site after recent bad weather

FIT SHOW WELCOMES ‘ROADMAP TO RECOVERY’ FIT Show organisers have welcomed yesterday’s ‘Roadmap to Recovery’, as outlined by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson in Parliament (Monday 22nd February 2021). The highly anticipated 50-page road map will see the Government relax coronavirus lockdown restrictions across England in phases between March 8th and June 21st this year. FIT Show event director, Nickie West comments: “Like the majority of the country, I watched and welcomed yesterday’s Government outline of our ‘roadmap to recovery’. Whilst we have all learnt that we cannot take any new measures for granted, and that the timeline is ‘contingent on data and not dates’, the roadmap that has been presented appears to be both cautious and realistic. It provides a solid and positive timeline for everyone to work towards. “I believe that the roadmap presents even more reasons for prospective FIT Show exhibitors to book with confidence. The

30

fact that we are working towards an end date of June 21st is a welcome milestone, providing a solid three months between things returning to ‘normal’ and FIT Show opening on September 26th. “From a visitor’s perspective, people can register to attend FIT Show with the confidence that restrictions around large gatherings and social distancing should have been completely lifted, whilst hopefully having been vaccinated in line with the Government’s July target. Exhibition organisers are experts in delivering safe and successful events. The June milestone will allow us to put in place any necessary measures for rapid testing, mask wearing and such like, should we need to, before FIT Show opens its doors to the public. “There has been a huge show of confidence from the event industry that large scale events will bounce back this summer. In the last few weeks alone we have seen new June dates announced for Royal Ascot and the announcement of the co-location of four

major Event Partners shows at the NEC from 7th - 8th July. There have also been several successful large scale event pilots overseas in recent months, an approach which is set to be adopted in England from May onwards. For the fenestration industry, the roadmap to recovery offers clarity around working in people’s homes as well as the reopening of showrooms. Whilst the industry has remained buoyant throughout the pandemic, with a huge uplift in homeowner enquiries, we know how important it is for people to be able to see products up close and in the flesh. Showrooms reopening will allow them to do just that. “Likewise, we are anticipating an even bigger demand from FIT Show visitors who will be eagerly anticipating having the first opportunity to see the latest products on the market since our last event in 2019. The sentiment across the sector is very much that people are desperate to get back to faceto-face business. There has been no industry

event since 2019 and throughout this time businesses have still been developing new products. “Behind the scenes we have been looking at ways to increase the shelf life of the content delivered at FIT Show, and how we can extend our whole offering above and beyond the three physical days at the show. You can expect to see some hybrid elements to our next installment, but it will still very much be the live FIT Show platform that our audience wants and expects. We cannot wait to get back to FIT in September!”

ENGINEERED WITH GRIPCORE TECHNOLOGY Leading composite door manufacturer DOORCO, is adding a new solid core composite door option to its already extensive portfolio of doors. Dan Sullivan, DOORCO’s MD offers insight into the new product that has been engineered using GRiPCORE Technology and what you can expect when it hits the market.

New exclusive glass and colours available, including Tectronic glass designed by Jeyda

DOORCO is expanding its composite door range with the addition of a solid core option that is engineered with GRiPCORE Technology. The new door is considered a premium upgrade to the standard foam-filled option and retains DOORCO’s signature benefits that make it stand out from the crowd.

simple as possible, GRiPCORE is available in a single size 914mm blank. This means that from one slab, you can make all required door sizes, minimising complex ordering and costly storage, and requires no additional investment in tooling and machinery. Working with DOORCO’s Just In Time (JIT) delivery option can simplify this even further.

WHAT IS GRIPCORE TECHNOLOGY?

A PREMIUM UPGRADE

GRiPCORE Technology is a hybrid of modern and traditional materials and has been engineered to deliver a stronger, heavier and more robust door that will not crack, move or de-laminate. The structure consists of a unique matrix of cross laminated engineered timber and hardwood stiles and rails, pressed with DOORCO’s signature 4mm GRP skins. GRiPCORE Technology is the evolution of the solid core door: it has safety and security in its DNA and has been designed to overcome the issues consumers face with the current market offering - particularly when it comes to tolerance. The GRiPCORE door blank will not move/bow/twist more than 3mm in that time. We are so confident in the product and the engineering and investment behind it, we are backing this up with a 10 Year Warranty on all GRiPCORE doors, to give you and your customers confidence for years to come.

From April, the GRiPCORE Technology upgrade will be available for our most popular doors: 4 panel blank top and 6/4 combi used to make the majority of our traditional door styles, Farmhouse for cottage style doors and Flush, Monza II and Links for more contemporary styling. From these six basic products you can create a wide range different door styles, including some new designs created specifically for GRiPCORE.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY DOORCO In addition to the material benefits of GRiPCORE, as a DOORCO product, it has the DOORCO difference when it comes to service, quality and delivery. We’ve applied the collective experience of our team to every stage of the development process, from the design and construction, right through to how our customers can incorporate GRiPCORE into their product portfolios with as much ease and as little investment as possible.

ONE SIZE FITS ALL As the composite door continues to grow in popularity and the market widens, combined with the “need it now” mentality we as consumers are all guilty of, stocking to meet demand can be a real headache, and one of the biggest challenges fabricators face. So to make it as

A unique matrix of cross laminated engineered timber and hardwood stiles and rails

When it comes to colour, our most popular standard colours are available, but of course, as with any DOORCO product, you can choose any colour from our premium range or use our colour-matching service for something bespoke. Our door glass range has also been extended and we are introducing some new exclusive designs, including Tectronic, which was designed by our own Creative Consultant, Jeyda. A new suite of marketing materials will also be available, including a state-of-the-art video illustrating how GRiPCORE is made, which can be viewed on the homepage of our website. We are very excited about the GRiPCORE’s potential and anticipate it being a real gamechanger for DOORCO, our customers and the composite door market as a whole. In an increasingly competitive industry, it’s imperative that your products and services help you and your customers stand out from crowd. At DOORCO, we are driven by innovating products and solutions. GRiPCORE is testament to this.

DOORCO doors engineered with GRiPCORE Technology will be available from April. For more information, and to register your interest, visit: www.gripcore.com.

TRADE NEWS

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper The following is a common format for illustrative purposes of a risk matrix follows. It is a simple yet highly effective to classifying risk and would be expected to be used conservatively when assessing likelihood and severity.

CUT PROTECTION

IN THE GLASS INDUSTRY

We all know cut resistant clothing has been around in the glass industry for quite some time now. Especially those who manually handle glass have long been issued with such type of protective workwear in order to reduce the risk of injury. As highlighted in the ‘International Labour Organization Encyclopaedia of Occupational Health and Safety’, the main risks for professionals working in the glass manufacturing sector are cuts, lacerations and soft tissues puncture wounds. All of which are most commonly result of encountering sharp glass, broken glass and even cutting tools. Based on records from the ‘US Department of Labour’, manufacturers of glass products have a total recordable incidence rate of nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses of 13.2 cases per 100 full-time workers per year. Based on these and many other facts and findings, cut resistant clothing doesn’t make just operational sense in the glass production and processing industry, it has become an essential piece of clothing within this sector. In the United Kingdom, the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) offers guidance on safety in the handling of flat glass and has stated that the handling of flat glass involves the risk of serious personal injury. HSE experience has shown that although the risk is higher in factories where flat glass is manufactured. Serious

34

accidents continue to happen in premises where glass is subsequently handled and processed. The advice given to health and safety professionals is clear: Appropriate protective clothing should be worn wherever glass is handled manually.

ESSENTIAL OF RISK ASSESSMENTS Any health & safety professional charged with the safety of the workforce, must carry our a risk assessment whenever any realistic hazard and risk has been identified: • HAZARD: Anything that may cause harm • RISK: The chance, high or low, that somebody could be harmed by these and other hazards, together with an indication of how serious the harm could be. A risk assessment does not need to become another ‘War & Peace’ novel; a massive document in a huge ring binder no none will ever end up reading. It can indeed be a simple document, which states that a risk has been identified and that all consideration was given to establish on how to mitigate that risk.

We believe that CutPRO® Cut Resistant Clothing is very much your ultimate choice when it comes to durable and ‘operationally sound’ PPE. PPE which will help you to mitigate the risk identified in your risk assessment! Our protective clothing is made from 100% Cut-Tex® PRO – the world’s most advanced cut resistant fabric. It is the result of extended research and valued input from senior safety professionals of leading flat glass and sheet metal companies around the world. It offers ANSI/ISEA 2016 Blade Cut Resistance Level A5. Besides exceptional levels of cut protection, it also offers the highest levels of puncture and tear (EN 388:2016). CutPRO® Cut Resistant Clothing has reported its most successful year since its creation in 2017. It is also on target for further sustained growth during 2021, in spite of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. A clear global marketing strategy and PR campaign during 2019 and 2020 has led to increasing brand awareness. The highly acclaimed protective clothing brand has also launched new garment designs, after consulting health and safety professionals of leading flat glass, sheet metal and air conditioning companies from around the world. Another reason for the company’s success story. Effective and reliable cut protection is absolutely crucial, as the main risks for professionals working in the glass and metal manufacturing sector are cuts, lacerations and soft tissues puncture wounds. The legal, financial and even moral consequence can be severe for any company, if found guilty of neglecting this realistic risk to their employees. Yet another reason for the company’s recent success story. Please view our product range online and email us for further information: info@cut-pro.com.

Consideration should be given to the likelihood of occurrence, the likelihood of harm and the consequence (severity of injury). In general, risks should be reduced to a level that is as low as reasonably practical.

“The advice given to health and safety professionals is clear: Appropriate protective clothing should be worn wherever glass is handled manually.” March 2021 | www.glassnews.co.uk

First-time activations for Kubu are already impressively high and with more consumers than ever before getting smart, it’s an opportunity for installers to get ahead as the industry is already becoming increasingly smart-led. Kubu is also perfect for any showroom environment and makes for a real focal point, helping installers to stand out from the competition.

UAP LAUNCHES INDUSTRY LEADING FULLEX KINETICA+ K4 LOCK

Building on the credentials of the innovative Fullex Kinetica locking range, Kinetica+ K4 breaks new ground in security hardware by combining a standard 3* cylinder lock profile with multiple intricate design features, delivering a lock that is easy to install but virtually impossible to bypass. Rigorously tested at UAP’s in-house test facility and by a third party testing house as part of the product development process, the new lock has defeated the newest methods of gaining entry developed by locksmiths and is Secured by Design, British Kitemarked and Sold Secure Diamond Standard. David Jennings, CEO of UAP explains: “We invest in continuous product development at UAP because we know that the criminal fraternity never stops devising new ways to defeat security hardware, so we need to ensure that we are always several steps ahead of them. “With the Fullex Kinetica+ K4, we wanted to develop a best-in-class locking system that will set a new benchmark for the sector, providing homeowners with complete peace of mind while offering door manufacturers, contractors and locksmiths an easy-toinstall product at a very competitive price point from a brand they trust. By combining multiple patented technologies engineered by our design team and working with established manufacturing partners to produce the locks to our strict quality assurance standards, we have achieved those goals with the Fullex Kinetica+ K4.” Suitable for new door fabrication, new build installations and retrofit requirements, Kinetica+ K4 has been designed for ease of installation and enhanced security. The industry-leading security features have allowed the lock to be designed with no ring on the cam, making installation faster and easier. A single sacrificial cut-line on the outside of the cylinder ensures a more robust and durable lock with improved protection from moisture and dust ingress, while aiding ease of installation. With extreme reliability and ultra-strong turning forces built in by design, the Kinetica+ K4 also includes UAP’s patented anti-bump system and three anti-pick pins. Supplied in plastic-free packaging, Kinetica+ K4 is available with a choice of key or thumb turn internal locking. The thumb turn model features the patentpending Fullex Helix Easy Turn System, which provides effortless operation with no

pressure needed to push before turning. The lock has been designed to reduce the risk of the thumb turn being inadvertently left from its security vertical position by a red indicator to confirm that the door has been properly locked from the inside. “With Kinetica+ K4 we have brought together our most advanced features in a single product to offer unrivalled security for the end user along with industry-leading ease of installation,” David continues. “We have tested the product way beyond the needs of compliance and accreditation to prove its functionality, durability and long-term performance, including 25-year accelerated use tests, which prove it will offer exceptionally smooth operation for decades.” Each Kinetica+ K4 lock will be supplied with three Bio+ keys; a completely new concept in keys developed by UAP to protect end users against bacteria and viruses. While the blade of key is fabricated from conventional metal, the coloured plastic bow has been treated with special additive in the key; proven to kill a variety of viruses and pathogens, including MRSA, fungal colonies and COV-SARS-2 (coronavirus). This innovative plastic bow provides permanent protection against the risk of infection from handling the keys and demonstrates UAP’s innovative commitment to making the world a safer place. The lock has been designed as a one key solution for easy keying alike, ensuring spare key availability and affordability. In addition to product testing, UAP has also carried out a number of product trials with locksmiths, including Martin Pink from Rapid Locksmith, who comments: “I found the Kinetica+ K4 locking system very easy to fit and virtually impossible to penetrate once installed. It provides the quality and ease of installation I have come to expect from UAP’s products and the Fullex range, but raises the bar when it comes to combining security features for robust performance. I am very surprised that it is possible to purchase a lock of this quality with so many features at this price.” www.uapcorporate.com

CURO, EMPLAS AND KUBU FOR A SMARTER NEW BUILD STANDARD Curo Group have become the first housebuilder in the UK to provide PVC doors equipped for Kubu smart-sensor technology as standard on all new sites, in partnership with their manufacturing partner, Emplas. Curo Group is a West of England Housing Association that own a range of property, from starter homes to Grade I Listed Buildings, in locations from rural villages to city centres. In recent years they along with other housebuilders have moved into new technologies with future-proofing for smart-tech high on the agenda and thereby promoting smart living without any associated risk or additional works

Kubu is a pioneer in the smart-sensor market for doors, and with over 18 months in the field of testing and development behind them, they are now fully assured of a product that works exceptionally. Curo will be promoting the Kubu Starter Kit’s at the point of house reservation, so the new homeowners can activate the smart-sensors on the day they move in. As a forward-thinking window and door manufacturer, Emplas have led the way in increasing the product adoption of Kubu and with the window sensor just a matter of months away it could be great news to all those associated with the brand. Ryan Johnson, managing director of Emplas commented: ‘Housebuilders are looking

3 STARS OF ORION Hardware specialist VBH has added to its family of greenteQ profile cylinders, having introduced the new Orion 3 star barrel.

Orion is tested to TS007 and is rated as a 3 star profile cylinder. This means that it offers full protection against drilling, picking, bumping and snapping without the need for any additional support such as a security handle or shroud. Orion is supplied with 5 Q-branded dimple keys for the standard individual cylinders and is available in nickel and brass finishes in key/key and thumb turn variants. VBH advise that keyed alike pairs and suites are also available. The thumb turn itself features a button that releases the cam from the inside after the interlocking mechanism has activated following a cylinder attack. This ensures that the door can be opened quickly from the inside. Dan Powell, VBH Head of Sales, comments “We’ve taken our time developing Orion as we wanted to make sure it was just right for our customers, whether they’re fabricators or installers, or if they’re on the locksmith or repair side. From the feedback we’ve had, our greenteQ design team have got it right again.”

VBH advise that Orion is supplied with ‘a wealth’ of guarantees and security features. As well as its 10 year performance guarantee, Orion is backed by the proteQ10 snap guarantee that will pay the home owner £2000 if the cylinder snaps and allows a break in. This is on top of the Q-secure guarantee that will pay out up to £8000 in the event of an intrusion. Orion is a Q-secure PREMIUM product.

When the consumer registers their Orion for its performance warranty and proteQ10 at www.qsecure.co.uk they are also invited to enter a personal password. When they do this they are enrolling in Orion’s Key Security Scheme that means that additional keys cannot be cut unless the password is quoted. Dan concludes “The performance warranty, proteQ10 and Q-secure guarantees are already impressive, but adding the additional layer of security that the Key Security Scheme brings makes Orion a really serious player in the profile cylinder market. We’re delighted to have added it to our greenteQ range.” For more information on greenteQ Orion or VBH’s range in general, email sales@vbhgb.com, call 01634 263300 or visit www.vbhgb.com.

for differentiation like everyone else. Smart technologies deliver that and Kubu is the perfect fit. Being able to offer house buyers access to a tech and app that allows them to monitor the permitter security for their home is a major selling point in new build or for that matter retail.’ Mark Bromley, CEO of Kubu added: ‘This is major news for the industry as the first housebuilder is now specifying doors that are Kubu equipped from Emplas. With the window variant just a matter of months away, we believe 2021 is the year that smartsensor technology comes of age for this industry.’ For information on Emplas please visit emplas.co.uk. BRITISH SAFETY COUNCIL RESPONDS TO GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCEMENT OF MORE FUNDING TO REMOVE UNSAFE CLADDING The Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government has announced an extra £3.5 billion for the removal of unsafe cladding in high rise buildings. The funding is for high-rise residential buildings of 18 metres and above, or those with six stories or more, in England. Mike Robinson, the British Safety Council’s Chief Executive, commented: “We are pleased the Government has, at last, listened to ours and many other peoples’ much-repeated call that leaseholders should not have to pay to remove unsafe cladding, which is an existing fire problem not of their making. Leaseholders and tenants are already paying unaffordable sums for 24/7 fire wardens, to patrol their buildings and ensure they are safe. While the announcement will provide some reassurance to residents of highrise properties, more pace must now be injected into this work. It is scandalous that four years after Grenfell, we are still

talking about removal of unsafe cladding.” Further action on fire safety is also necessary if we are to avoid any more tragedies like the one at Grenfell Tower in 2017. This funding does not cover properties below 18 metres or six stories, that have some form of unsafe cladding, where leaseholders will still need to pay for its removal. Neither does the scheme provide financial support to people whose buildings have fire safety issues for reasons other than cladding, such as balconies on a building that have been built with flammable material. It is the role of the state to ensure people are safe in their homes. The Grenfell fire highlighted failures across the whole supply chain from design, cladding manufacturers, construction, fire safety and building occupation. As part of our charitable purpose, the British Safety Council is calling for effective fire safety regulation in the built environment, whatever the height of building, because it is good for business and will deliver a public benefit. While high rise buildings have specific problems, more work is required in building construction more generally. Mr Robinson concluded: “I am hopeful that the Fire Safety Bill will be enacted without any further delay, so that we can avoid more tragedies like Grenfell.”

DHF HOSTS A SERIES OF BESPOKE WEBINARS ON UKCA MARKING FOR ITS MEMBERS DHF (Door & Hardware Federation) has kicked off a series of bespoke webinars regarding UKCA marking replacing CE marking following Brexit, with the first one held on Wednesday 10th February. Specifically tailored for members of the ‘Garage Door Group’, the first webinar was delivered via Zoom and hosted by DHF’s Training & Compliance Officer, Nick Perkins. It served to highlight the pertinent points regarding the replacement of the CE mark following Brexit, relevant to manufacturers

and suppliers of domestic garage doors, for example, non-compliant competitors offering cut price hold-to-run powered doors operated by long range radio controls, and the potential problem that existing system three test reports may not be valid between GB, NI & EU. On the latter point, DHF is awaiting clarification from a range of sources, including the UK Construction Products Association, Construction Products Europe, BSI and, indirectly, the UK Government Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government.

Webinars of a similar nature will follow shortly for DHF’s other groups which cover the locks and building hardware, metal and timber doorsets, industrial doors and shutters, and automated gate sectors. The webinars will seek to provide detailed guidance on what each specific group will need to consider now that CE marking is no longer recognised in the UK. From 1 January 2021, the new UKCA mark is the only recognised conformity mark for the GB market (although not be recognised in the EU 27 nor in Northern Ireland) and applies to goods placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland), replacing the existing CE mark.

of briefing papers were created to guide its members. Now, it is ‘drilling down’ into the particulars, and in so doing, highlighting what each group will need to be aware of going forward, although this information is subject to change. “Our initial series of webinars, delivered in November, were extremely well-received, and we are delighted with the positive feedback already being received on this one,” says DHF’s General Manager and Secretary, Michael Skelding. “There are obvious complexities surrounding UKCA now that the old CE mark has been replaced, and each group will experience its own unique set of challenges.

GUARDSMAN FIRE DOOR FROM ODL EUROPE ATTRACTING ATTENTION OVER 200 SPECTUS WINDOWS FITTED IN NEW GOLD-STANDARD DEVELOPMENT Over 200 Elite 70 casement windows and 32 French door sets were manufactured and installed in a new 32-home development in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire. The 32 new home development were designed and built to exacting high standards incorporating Secured by Design features throughout, including Police Preferred specification for the windows and doors. The manufacture and installation of the windows and doors was awarded to experienced Spectus’ fabricator Highseal Manufacturing Company based in Scunthorpe. Established in 2012, Highseal is committed to delivering product excellence and operates under stringent CE Markings and BSi Kitemark standards which ensures their products meet Approved Document Q requirements which was fundamental for this project. The Elite 70 casement windows were manufactured in anthracite grey on white to complement the exacting specification of the properties and all windows and doors met the necessary Secured by Design compliance. Elite 70 is Spectus’ flagship system, and its casement windows are the versatile window solution for all property styles. It is a considered system in the commercial arena thanks to its compelling list of benefits and performance criteria that help specifiers and contractors meet even the most demanding requirements. The 5-chamber Elite 70 system delivers optimal thermal performance and is PAS24:2016 compliant as standard with Secured by Design options available. Large

reinforcement chambers give optimum strength under wind loading and equal sash to frame overlaps across all products giving a consistent rebate. The 32 new affordable homes have been built on a disused sports complex and consist of 18 two-bedroom, 11 threebedroom and three four-bedroom homes. The development forms part of North Lincolnshire Council’s commitment to build 240 new affordable homes at various sites in the region. The project began in November 2019 and the housing development has already earned the highest award for crime prevention. As a result of delivering on the exacting standards, Humberside Police awarded the new Scunthorpe home development Secured by Design Gold status. This award is issued by Secured by Design in recognition of the achievement to design out crime within the development. It acknowledges the measures taken to reduce the opportunity for crime and anti-social behaviour by improved layout, environmental design and the use of Police Preferred Specification products. This award also provides evidence of compliance with Building Regulations for domestic security in England, Scotland and Wales. Commenting on the new development, Holly Donaldson of Highseal Manufacturing Company, said: “We were pleased to have been involved in this project and delighted that it achieved Gold status. The result is superb and has resulted in some much-needed new homes in the area.” Tel: 0808 178 3370 www.spectus.co.uk

The Guardsman Fire Door slab from ODL Europe is billed as a gamechanger for the 30- minute composite fire door market. The strength of its credentials is being reflected in the strong interest ODL Europe is seeing since it introduced the product in late 2020. Nathan Barr, Managing Director of ODL Europe, said: “The commercial sector is very interested in the Guardsman Fire Door for good reason. It offers reliable performance and consistent test results over and above anything else currently seen in the composite fire door market.” The Guardsman’s performance – in both glazed and unglazed versions – has proved unrivalled. It has been tested to the European fire test standard of BS EN 1634-1:2008, the more onerous test standard required by Part B of building regulations. On average, the door has achieved a 100% overrun past the 30-minute mark. In some instances, it has achieved over 70 minutes. This performance has been secured by going back to the drawing board on the door’s construction. The phenolic foam core typically used in a composite fire door manufacture has been replaced with more stable Agrifiber, which is a board material made from resin-bonded agricultural fibres. At the right density, the material provides the structural properties and stable fire resistance required. It is also a green building product, which will help specifiers wanting to maximise the environmental standards of a scheme. The Guardsman door can be fabricated to a range of sizes from just two base designs, offering fabricators manufacturing economies. More importantly, it also helps to ensure the

door still meets the required standards, even when assembled by different fabricators. The door not only brings outstanding test results, it also brings the renowned quality of a Capstone composite door slab. It features hardwood stiles and rails and 2mm Capstone GRP skins, which means it is low maintenance and able to withstand the rigours of high-traffic areas. The Guardsman Fire Door is the result of a six-figure investment by ODL Europe. The company worked with the engineers at its partner Capstone, the world-leading supplier of composite doors, as well as several experienced fire door fabricators. ODL Europe is the company that builds value into building products. Its Guardsman Fire Door is the perfect example of this ethos in action. It’s hardly surprising it’s attracting a great deal of interest from the industry. Tel: 0151 933 0299- www.odleurope.com

THIS MONTH: Stewart Grand, AdminBase Training & Implementation, Ab Initio Glass News talks to Ab Initio’s Stewart Grand about his love of art and design, dreams to build his own eco-home, and how he is settling into his new role working with AdminBase customers.

IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU... Where were you born and live, currently? I was born, and still live, in Norwich, Norfolk.

Your education and the subject or activity in which you excelled? I have always been creative with Art being my favourite subject at school, closely followed by Physical Education which was something I also excelled at. I left college with a GNVQ Advanced Qualification in Art & Design which positioned me well to pursue a career in a creative sector.

Your favourite sports or interests? I have always been a keen sports person and football fan, but enjoy watching it rather than playing these days. I know my way around the tennis court and have done a bit of running in the past, taking part in the Great North Run a few years back and raising money for my chosen charity, which is probably my best physical achievement to date.

I have a passion for graphic design and being creative. To me, in business, image is everything. Other than that, I am a family man with a love for animals and I spend a lot of my spare time walking our Manchester Terriers Woody and Mischa.

Someone or something that inspires you? Inspiration is all around us. For me it’s all about having an open mind and letting inspiration find you. Going for a walk is a great way to clear your mind. Nature is beautiful and can be incredibly inspiring. Some time out, to walk amongst the trees and flowers, walk through a field or along a coastline, that is where I find my happy place.

The temptation you can’t resist? That’s an easy one, I love a glass of red wine. Although I wouldn’t call myself a connoisseur by any stretch of the imagination!

YOUR CAREER... When and how did you join this industry? In 2007, following a 10-year career in business support and assisting a network of

80 + franchisees of a national sign franchise, I was head hunted to join a local home improvement company as their Business Manager. I spent the next 12+ years managing the growth and development of all business support and operational functions, which included integrating AdminBase across the business. They are now one off the largest installers of home improvement products in the UK, First Home Improvements.

The mistake you would like to correct?

Due to the emergence of the global pandemic and subsequently being furloughed back in March last year, it was time to part ways and look for my next challenge.

The talent you would like to enhance?

Having known Rhonda and her team at Ab Initio since 2009, being offered the Training and Implementation role seemed like the perfect fit. Bringing with me a wealth of industry and AdminBase experience, I joined the company in November 2020 and have never looked back.

The job you do in 25 words? My role is to provide AdminBase users with training and ongoing support whilst implementing the software into their business, enabling them to maximise their company’s efficiencies.

Your greatest achievement? Becoming a Dad in August 2017.

I have no regrets, always looking forward and never looking back. You cannot change the past but can carve out a better future and I am sure there will be many more mistakes along the way.

AND YOUR FUTURE... I would love to become more of wine connoisseur.

What you would like to do if you weren’t in the industry? Become an international jet setter and see more of the world, assuming everyone would be able to travel freely again.

A particular ambition? One of my favourite TV programmes is Grand Designs and I have a lifelong ambition to build my very own eco-friendly home.

The way you want to be remembered? Hard working and always dedicated and committed to the cause.

PROTECT YOUR MARGINS AND YOUR REPUTATION WITH ONSITE 7 Onsite 7, the new cloud-based job management software developed by the trade for the trade, is seeing stronger than ever take-up. Rhys Hoddinott, CEO at OnSite 7 is clear as to the reasons why savvy installers are now using the software. He said: “Onsite 7 helps installers to grow their business and more importantly, prevents claims for work done well.” The sad truth is that unfair claims hurt businesses – and there are more claims than you might think. Research suggests that over one in five construction contracts experience dispute or claim and fighting the claim takes time and money, while customers holding on to payment affects cashflow. Rhys comments: “In our experience, disputes with customers frequently result from a disagreement between either what was supplied or when it would be supplied. In both cases, evidence is needed – and that’s exactly what Onsite 7 provides.”

Onsite 7 ensures all matters between the business and the customer are accurately recorded in a single place, meaning there can be no disputes about what was agreed during the sale process and fitting of products. Installers can also capture all relevant information relating to a job, including documentation, instructions, photographs, videos and contract variations. Everything is agreed by the customer at every stage from sales and survey to ongoing service. It helps to prevent claims, issues and disputes, saving installers valuable time and money.

Rhys concludes: “If you want to protect your margins and grow your business, Onsite 7 job management software is the answer.” Tel: 0800 0029748 – www.onsite7.co.uk

But Onsite 7 isn’t just about preventing disputes, it also gives installers the tools to grow their business. It’s an end-to-end team, customer and job management system that is available anytime, anywhere. It helps businesses become more streamlined and efficient and it can also act as a customer relationship management (CRM) system, helping installers to driver smarter marketing. All the data is stored securely in the cloud in accordance with all relevant data protection requirements, giving installers complete peace of mind.

INTRODUCING – JOB MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE THAT’S BUILT FOR THE TRADE... BY THE TRADE Onsite 7 bring powerful benefits to your business, whatever your size. Whether you are a construction business, builder or window fitter, Onsite7 can help reduce risk to your business and protects your bottom line.

TOMMY TRINDER’S GOOGLE MAPS THE LATEST IN A ‘SELLING WITHOUT SYSTEM THAT NEVER STOPS EVOLVING HOME VISITS’ MASTERCLASS IS A CROWD PULLER The industry’s first ever masterclass on the theme of remote selling has attracted significant interest with over 150 window professionals joining the online session in February. The free one-hour workshop, hosted over Zoom by Tommy Trinder, sought to de-mystify selling remotely by dissecting a typical remote sales pitch and sharing tips, tricks and best practice gleaned from window installers that are successfully selling without an initial home visit. “An increasingly number of our subscribers are hooking up with clients remotely, sharing screens and using our Framepoint® platform to sell,” explains Tommy Trinder’s founder Chris Brunsdon. “Installers are finding it saves them time and money and delivers conversion rates that are comparable if not better than selling faceto-face. And, it seems, many homeowners actually prefer the experience!” Attendees at the masterclass were broadly split 50/50 between firms that are already actively remote selling and those that were interested to find out more. Gary Bower, Managing Director of Saffron Walden based installer Paxtons Home Improvements, was amongst the attendees: “We were very impressed with the presentation and content - very useful. Certainly, it’s made us consider how we might adopt these technologies at Paxtons to interact with our customers - there are obvious business benefits.” Faced with numerous requests for a re-run, Tommy Trinder are in the process of issuing new dates for further Selling Without Home Visits workshops. Installers can find out more and register for future events at www.tommytrinder.com/masterclass.

Long term AdminBase user Bradley Scott Windows says Maps are an excellent addition. Having adopted the web-based version of AdminBase last year after running their business using the popular installer management system for more than 5 years, Andy Farrington, boss of Tamworth-based Bradley Scott Windows says that the latest changes, including Google Maps, have “made a great system even better”.

Google Maps is an integrated feature of the web-based AdminBase: “The Google Maps feature is fantastic. Although we are still learning how to get the most out of it, we can look at the map and immediately see when and more importantly, where, our sales calls, surveys and installations are scheduled,” said Andy. “We can then plan further calls for our teams to make the most efficient use of their time, and of course, we can tell our customers when we can be with them, immediately.” A further feature of Google Maps on AdminBase is the facility to schedule demo calls. By including specific details of installations already carried out, users at Bradley Scott can see at-a-glance where installations of, for example, bi folding doors, are in proximity to an enquirer, allowing the most convenient viewings to be scheduled.

Andy is an avid fan of AdminBase, which he says has been continuously updated in the time they have been working with the system, changing to the web-based version when it was released in 2020: “When we learned about the benefits of moving on to the web-based version of AdminBase last year we immediately switched,” recalled Andy. “With the changing rules of working under the pandemic it allowed us to keep on top of the business from anywhere, which gave us the added flexibility we needed.” “AdminBase allows us to keep an eye on every part of our business,” explained Andy. “We can get a broad view at a glance by looking at the Dashboard, to then drill down for a detailed look at things. With

Andy Farrington, Managing Director, Bradley Scott Windows

Remedials, for example, I can see exactly what work is required, the time needed, parts…everything, to allow me to keep a tight rein on costs and time, and to ensure the homeowner is fully informed,” he said. “Every part of the operation is linked, with the information entered just once and carried through and updated throughout.” Andy says that the support provided by An Initio Systems, the company behind AdminBase is excellent: “Through regular, online update sessions we are constantly discovering more features and improved, slicker ways of doing things,” added Andy.

FRAMEPOINT® - SOFTWARE THAT’S AS SIMPLE AS SKETCHING ON A PAD. Launched just over one year ago, Framepoint® from Tommy Trinder, is already the go to ap for more than 750 window & door professionals. What’s behind this rapid growth? And how is Framepoint® different from software that has gone before? We spoke to founder and CEO, Chris Brunsdon. “Call me sad, but I’ve always loved selling windows,” explains Chris. “27 years in the industry, and I’ve had a go at most parts. But selling windows to homeowners has always been the best bit. Finding the right software to help me sell was always my biggest bugbear, though. It always felt that the technology had been designed the wrong way around; inspired, so to say, by the manufacturing department, rather the sales team.” This frustration lead Chris on a journey to develop Framepoint® - a journey that took somewhat longer than expected; “It was supposed to take a year,” says Chris. “In the end it took seven years of intensive development before we had a product, we felt was ready for installers.” The result is certainly a piece of software that looks and feels very different. Gone are menus, drop down arrows and unnecessary jargon. Instead the user is greeted with a blank page, reminiscent of a slice of graph paper from your old school maths book.

Bradly Scott Windows is well known in Staffordshire, having served the Tamworth, Lichfield and surrounding areas for more than twenty years. The company supplies a wide range of windows, doors and conservatories and is a member of the Independent Network, which represents VEKA installers. Andy is a keen fundraiser and supporter of the local community with Bradley Scott Windows the main sponsor of local football team Tamworth FC. His prominent Watling Street showroom and offices also sport a huge mural in support of the efforts of Captain Sir Tom Moore and the NHS.

“I wanted to be able sketch windows on a computer, just like I did on my A4 pad,” explains Chris. “We’re very proud of the results. You can literally free-draw any style of window with your finger and see it come to life in full photo-realistic quality – it really is as simple as sketching on a pad!” Aside from obvious wow factor, Framepoint’s® unique free drawing interface brings solid commercial benefits, argues Chris. “Selling has always been about engaging with a client; getting their heats beating faster. Face-to-face or via screen share the effect is the same - when a client sees their windows brought to life on Framepoint® the lights come on!” Replacing the traditional pad and pen with Framepoint® brings efficiency savings too. Re-drawing items after the initial sales visit, a long-held bugbear of installers, is eliminated. Instead installers can send

pricing requests to multiple suppliers directly from the app in a click. Or, with Framepoint’s® advanced pricing module, installers that want to deliver an instant price can pre-populate the app with price matrices for any product. Either way, quotes are easily generated and may be emailed directly to the homeowner from within the app in one click. The documentation looks good too, carrying photo-realistic inside and outside views of each product and clear, jargon free text. “Flexibility is key in today’s market,” says Chris. “Installers are constantly faced with having to source products from multiple manufacturers on one site. Unilateral software solutions, foisted on retailers by their suppliers, aren’t much help in these scenarios. From the outset we’ve always conceived of Framepoint® as a wrapper for an installer’s entire product range - PVCu, aluminium or timber – regardless of where you buy. And setting up a product range is super-quick; you can be up and running in minutes not months.” Framepoint® is sold on a subscription basis, with fees starting at £95 per month. CASE STUDY: MODPLAN

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

MODPLAN: ONWARDS AND UPWARDS

2020 has been a challenging year in many ways. From lockdown measures to unprecedented demand throughout the fenestration industry, adaptability has been key for everyone in business. As a company whose business has spanned more than four decades, leading trade fabricator Modplan of Newport, South Wales has proven it has what it takes to stand the test of time, despite any economic and industry challenges.

CHANGE IN A CHALLENGING WORLD Early in 2020, Modplan had begun the steps to start adding the Liniar 70mm window system to its comprehensive VEKA product offering. The set up happened just as the country was beginning to feel the effects of COVID-19 and before the first nationwide lockdown in March. During this time and with a policy of continued investment, the Modplan team began to further prepare their business for the future. "We knew we needed to invest in new machinery, and had two distinct focuses,” explains Modplan’s Managing Director, Heidi Sachs. “Firstly, we wanted to update machines that were reaching the end of their usable life and replace them with more technologically advanced models. Secondly, we needed to expand our manufacturing operations, including our dedicated flush casement factory, where we decided a new Quad Welder and Corner Cleaner were required." "Our overall goal was to ensure that we could continue to offer the best in product quality with exceptional manufacturing efficiencies across our multiple manufacturing sites. To achieve these goals with minimal disruption to our operations was crucial."

48

PUTTING PLANS INTO MOTION

The list of machines Modplan required was lengthy, ranging from two-head uni welders to bead saws and corner transom cleaners. Procuring all the machines and helping to bringing these goals to fruition

would require a machinery company that could work with Modplan to fit into their production schedule, with the ability to offer machinery on short lead times. Only one company could do this, together with giving support to Modplan throughout the process - Avantek Machinery.

SUPPORT, SUPPLY AND BEYOND Heidi commented, "Avantek offered a complete turnkey solution to meet the needs of our business. We needed a machinery provider who could work with us across multiple sites throughout the business and provide the best in machine technology to support our ever-growing business." Avantek is well-known for incredibly short lead times, thanks to its policy of investing in stocked machinery in the UK. In addition, Avantek’s support is unrivalled from the very first factory layout discussion, to advice about machinery requirements, through to delivery, installation and training. With after-care and service options, including spare parts stocked in the UK, Avantek Machinery always puts its customers first.

PLANNING IS KEY For Modplan, this meant planning out an installation schedule that would be rolled out across 12 weeks, with minimum disruption to the fabricator's operations whilst gearing them up for operational efficiencies. "We’re delighted with the service and support we’ve received so far from Avantek,” says Heidi. “These machines will help us to continue to offer the best in product quality whilst ensuring our manufacturing process is incredibly efficient. "Our business is built on offering highquality products and a competitive turnaround time. This means all our fabrication machinery has to support these criteria while also allowing us to increase our capacity to support growing demand from our customers." Some of the machinery Modplan required has already been installed at its facilities. The remainder are booked in to be delivered from now until the New Year. For updates on this and all other Avantek Machinery customer projects, visit www.avantekmachinery.co.uk. For more information about Modplan and its products, visit www.modplan.co.uk.

RAPID GROWTH SEES EXPANSION AT NORWICH-BASED GLAZING FIRM

- MOVE TO 80% LARGER PREMISES AND FIVE NEW MEMBERS OF STAFF Rapid growth at Norwich-based glazing manufacturer, Norwich Aluminium Limited, has seen the company move to new 80% larger premises and employ five new staff as it continues to fly the flag for UK manufacturing in construction. Norwich Aluminium was established six years ago by local man Alex Warren. Alex, who was working in the glazing industry at the time, spotted an opportunity to move into aluminium, a material which was growing in popularity for commercial and architectural glazing. By re-mortgaging his house, Alex set up the company in a unit on White Lodge Trading Estate in Norwich, next to other established brands such as Screwfix and SIG. Alex explained: “Using my knowledge of the PVC-U market, I could see the growing opportunity in aluminium. I knew that if I wanted to take the leap, I had to react quickly to market trends and invest properly. The banks were not interested at the time, so I raised the funds myself to get going and set up a small manufacturing facility in Norwich. We started with just three staff.” Norwich Aluminium manufactures glazing for domestic and commercial projects. It recently completed glazing for new wards at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital, some of which are currently being used as emergency COVID-19 wards. The company has worked on hundreds of projects across the country, ranging from new and existing schools and shop fronts to home renovations and commercial offices. Norwich Aluminium is very proud of the foothold gained in the local Norwich area and neighbouring counties, working on some high profile and standout architectural buildings. Recent projects have seen the company diversify and move

52

further afield, reaching from Brighton to Edinburgh, to work with retained clients. In December 2020, they set up subsidiary company Norwich Aluminium Trade Supply, with a focus on manufacturing a quality aluminium product for other glazing companies that are involved in installationonly projects and looking for a reliable local supplier. Today, Norwich Aluminium employs 30 full-time staff across the group. Having outgrown its premises, Alex has invested £340,000 to move to new 80% larger offices and a bespoke manufacturing facility on the same industrial estate. The offices have been designed, manufactured and installed by spatial designers and event agency Production Bureau and comprise workspace and meeting rooms, as well as a staff canteen. The manufacturing premises include new top-of-the-range equipment and work benches to allow an increase in production, as well as a better space for the staff, who have been key to the success of the business. Alex Warren continued: “In 2020 alone we manufactured over £3 million of aluminium glazing products for customers across the country. We are targeting a 30% growth on that figure this year. While the UK construction and manufacturing industries continue to struggle, our future order book is looking very strong. We’re bucking the trend and still growing. We pride ourselves on quality and moving to these new premises will enable us to offer an even better service for our customers using the latest manufacturing facilities. We are looking forward to seeing what the future brings.” For more information on Norwich Aluminium, visit www.norwichaluminium. co.uk and www.norwichtradesupply.co.uk.

’MARKET UNCERTAINTY?’ With both Brexit and Covid-19 issues still very much with us, 2021 will continue to be a challenge for all businesses. Both the ‘State of the Trade’ survey from CAB and the recent CPA (Construction Products Association) forecasts do offer cautious hope for the year ahead. CAB’s 2020 final quarter ‘State of the Trade Survey’ showed a distinct caution within the fenestration industry compared to the wider construction industry. CAB’s survey is taken from its membership and the results benchmarked against the wider construction industry by the CPA. Normally CAB members fare much better, or are more optimistic than that of the general construction industry, but the last report of 2020 offers an interesting insight. Members historic sales, which reflects the fourth quarter 2020 against the third quarter 2020 only 36% of the CAB membership, on balance, said that their sales had increased compared to 85% on balance of the wider construction industry. Looking forward to the first quarter 2021 on balance only 32% of CAB members expected sales to increase, whilst 48% on balance of the wider construction industry expected sales to increase. The change could be reflecting the delay in which the supply of aluminium fenestration follows some time after building starts on site. The year ended with a net balance of 14% of CAB members suggesting that sales volumes had reduced in the previous year. The main driving factor for CAB members remains the costs of materials and obviously the exchange rate, as much of the UK’s aluminium is imported. Looking forward as you would expect 62% of CAB members suggested that the demand for product would be the likely constraining factor in business for the next 12 months, reflecting the conservative figure in both reported historic and expected sales forecasts.

Historic Capacity Utilisation

Looking at capacity utilisation and companies that are operating at over 90% of capacity, less than 50% of CAB members suggested they were running at this level and there does not seem to be an expected improvement in the year ahead. The wider construction industry is faring a little better, but the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 outbreak continue to make business difficult for most. On balance 27% of members have indicated that labour costs during the last year have increased and on balance 64% of members expect that there will be further increases in cost in the year ahead. Both historic and expected costs remain higher than that of the wider construction industry. Encouraging to see is the capital investment from CAB members in the year ahead, on net balance across all capital assets, is set to double in the year ahead suggesting confidence in the coming months. Overall, the CPA’s main scenario anticipates that construction output in 2021 will rise by 14.0% with the largest growth rates in 2021 expected to be in infrastructure at 32%, public housing rm&i at 21% and industrial construction by 19%. The CPA’s main scenario for 2022 anticipates that construction output rising by a further 4.9% with the largest growth rates expected to be

in public housing of 10.0% and industrial construction of 8.5%. Obviously these figures are based on combating the Covid -19 virus as one of the main restrictions we currently face. In fenestration circles, whilst commercial new build and refurbishment outlooks may be a little cautious, there is a possibility that the home improvement sector could bounce back after the current lockdown as it did for the first lockdown in 2020. With homeowners looking to spend capital, capital not spent on holidays, in improving their homes and property, these improvements often include replacement windows and doors. Whilst still far from the most widely used fenestration material in the UK today, aluminium continues to grow and is arguably the material of choice for the homeowner given its affordability. Published quarterly, the state of the market survey is open to CAB members to contribute and offers businesses a unique insight to the fenestration sector. Despite the pandemic, it is business as usual at CAB and staff are on hand at the offices and working remotely to answer any aluminium fenestration related questions. Information is regularly updated on the CAB website at www.c-a-b.org.uk. For Association Membership enquiries, please contact Jessica Dean at the CAB offices by email jessica.dean@c-a-b.org.uk or telephone 01453 828851.

TAKING THE LEAD WITH ALUMINIUM SUPPLY Investment in aluminium manufacturing facilities has positioned Sternfenster as an industry leader for the quality of its product range and the strength of its service. Glass News reports on the high demand for home improvement during 2020 and how it is continuing into 2021 for companies such as Sternfenster. “Should we be confident about the year ahead? The short answer to that is ‘yes’!” says Mike Parczuk, Managing Director, Sternfenster. “The high levels of demand that we experienced in 2020, a direct result of

Covid-19 restrictions that encouraged homeowners to focus their attention and spare cash on home improvements, resulted in unprecedented levels of activity throughout the industry. “That demand has been carried through into 2021, and from what we are seeing, it’s been given an additional boost with the introduction of lockdown 3 at the start of the new year.” Mike’s comment’s follow recent reports from the Bank of England that UK households accrued around £100bn in excess savings last year, with chief economist, Andy Haldane, highlighting that ‘huge’ pent-up demand with consumers could help the economy recover at a much greater speed than first expected. This coincides with the latest statistics from the Business Pilot Barometer – which delivers a monthly breakdown of data from the retail sector – that reveals a 34% jump in sales and an increase of 111% in new leads in January.

Sternfenster MD Mike Parczuk

That’s in addition to a recent market report from AMA Research, that identifies a distinct V shaped recovery for the industry by the end of 2021, and which also singles out a number of distinct opportunities at the premium end of the market, including for aluminium. “Aluminium continues to rise in popularity, and we can’t see demand slowing anytime soon,” says Mike. “Again, that is positive news, but it does come with a word of warning, because not all manufacturers are set up to supply aluminium at volume,” he continues. “Installers need to be able to rely on their suppliers to deliver consistent high quality product, on decent lead times or else they run the risk of losing out on business, or worse, suffering long term reputational damage.” Sternfenster’s aluminium offering includes the Smart Visofold bi-fold and Smart Visoglide inline slider, along with the Smart Alitherm 300, a system that is suitable for both residential and light commercial applications. Featuring an extended polyamide thermal break, it can achieve a WER A Rating or U-value as low as 1.5W/ m2K.

Using profile scanning technology, the Ever Theta introduces exceptional accuracy during manufacture and is capable of flagging out of tolerance profiles of as little as 0.4mm in length or 0.9mm on the diagonal, helping to ensure extremely high levels of finish to 45∞ mitre and 90∞ joints. And in addition to improving quality, it also delivers significant manufacturing efficiencies, by reducing full-cycle times to just 2 minutes and 31 seconds. LUMI: WHAT ALUMINIUM GARNALEX LAUNCHES HAS BEEN WAITING FOR SHEERLINE PRESTIGE Lumi, the award-winning window that is immediately recognisable by its unique and stylish edge-to-edge ‘frameless’ glazing, is now available in aluminium. Having been described at its launch as ‘a product that truly reinvents the window’, Lumi has since gone on to be installed in 5000 homes in the UK and Ireland.

Profiles are constructed using aluminium outer and inner profiles, bridged using hidden PVC-U sections that are rolled in to provide a clever and highly effective thermal break. Insulation and strength of the profiles are further enhanced by internal sections being foamed with PU during manufacture.

Garnalex has launched Sheerline Prestige, its most versatile and thermally efficient aluminium window and door system. Featuring a full depth Eurogroove, Prestige lets fabricators use their existing PVC-U hardware to streamline manufacturing, and is set to help redefine installer expectations in 2021.

Continuously evolved since the launch of Lumi in 2015, parent company Apeer has now produced an aluminium version in a move that the firm says is ‘what aluminium has been waiting for’. Available with triple and double-glazed options, Lumi Aluminium offers the same all-glass design as established the composite-framed versions, but now offers homeowners and specifiers an option to answer the growing demand for aluminium windows and doors.

Lumi aluminium is available from launch with black or anthracite external finishes, with a range of RAL colour options internally. A range of matching Lumi sliding and entrance doors are already available.

Offering unrivalled choice, Prestige boasts the widest range of window styles and includes doors and French doors. The system is available in the same style options and 12 stocked colours as Classic, Sheerline’s ultra slim window system. Prestige also includes 28-44mm glazing options and a choice of small, intermediate and large outer frames to accommodate different plaster lines and window reveals for a perfect finish for any size and style of home.

Although presenting a ‘frameless’ appearance externally that especially suits contemporary building and refurbishment styling and design choices, internally Lumi Aluminium presents slimmer sightlines, aided by the use of bonded glazing. The bonded glazing ensures the greater structural rigidity and security of the window, with the additional benefit of being faster and simpler to install, as every window is pre-glazed.

58

“Lumi is the perfect window style to be presented in aluminium,” says Asa McGillian, Managing Director of Apeer and the driving force behind Lumi. “The aluminium version will provide our installer partners with a full suite of options for homeowners and professional specifiers, the latter of whom especially have shown a great deal of interest in the possibility of Lumi in aluminium,” added Asa. “We have designed Lumi Aluminium to be perfect for the home improvement market, being simple to handle and install and with no beading or gaskets to cut and fit on site. And the edge-to-edge glazing is immediately arresting and appealing for homeowners looking specifically for aluminium windows.” For further information go to: https://lumiwindows.com

Prestige was developed from Sheerline’s core principles of beautiful aesthetics, top performance and innovative, fabricator and installer-friendly design. Built around Sheerline’s innovative Thermavic® multichamber, thermal design, U-Values are as low as 0.9 W/(m²K) for triple glazing and 1.3 U-value W/(m²K) double glazed. Sheerline’s cills feature this same technology coupled with innovative in-built weather sealing that keep draughts and rain safely outside. Prestige also incorporates Sheerline’s patented corner jointing method, making it easy and quick to fabricate beautiful, easily repeatable perfect corners, time and time again. Roger Hartshorn, Garnalex CEO, comments: “The launch of Sheerline Prestige is timely. The market remains strong and consumer demand for high performance, beautiful products is soaring. Sheerline is perfectly poised to

help fabricators and installers benefit from this demand. Our first system, Sheerline Classic, is a super-slim specialist window, ideal for replacing traditional steel-framed windows or contemporary properties. Our second system, Sheerline Prestige is our most versatile system with beautiful looks, and doors and French doors, and a choice of sizes and designs to suit any type of property. The feedback from fabricators has been extremely positive and we’re excited about the year ahead.” Sheerline Prestige’s outstanding product innovation is matched with outstanding service. All profiles and components are available in 5 working days in 12 stocked colours, including 3 anodised finishes. Dual colour combinations from this stocked range are available on the same 5-day turnaround. While bespoke colours are available in just 10 working days, setting new customer-friendly agile standards for aluminium. NEW VEKA MD SHARES HIS STRATEGIC APPROACH TO 2021 AND BEYOND The newly appointed MD of VEKA plc, Neil Evans, has a clear strategy for 2021 and is leading the business to ensure VEKA, and its customers, continue to thrive in challenging times, not just this year but in the years to come. Squaring up to the challenges of Covid-19, Neil took the helm of the business in January 2021 and has this week revealed his intentions for the year ahead for the business.

“We are in a good position facing the future with fearless optimism, but a newly earned respect for the need to be able to flex our strategy and be nimble in these extraordinary times. We are committed to supporting our customers as the ripples of the pandemic continue to provide after-shocks not only for our industry, but for the economy as a whole.”

VEKA placed people at its heart in the challenging trading year of 2020 – customers, suppliers and employees – and this, combined with a trusted brand, strong heritage and strong relationships will form the backbone of 2021’s strategic approach.

extraordinary times. We are committed to supporting our customers as the ripples of the pandemic continue to provide after-shocks not only for our industry, but for the economy as a whole.

According to Neil, although 2021 was seen by many as marking the beginning of recovery, he is a little more respectful of his opponent. Neil explained: “We are in a good position facing the future with fearless optimism, but a newly earned respect for the need to be able to flex our strategy and be nimble in these

As a business, and as management team, we have a shared ruthless focus on where we want to be by 2025 and how we’re going to get there, whilst remaining mindful that there will be some unexpected twists and turns along the way. Our plans are ambitious, but sustainable, as we will never put the stability of the business or people at risk.”

VEKA has done a great job of maintaining a good level of performance despite difficult circumstances, but there is always room for improvement. The year ahead will see VEKA concentrating on further innovation and driving improvement for the industry, not forgetting continuing to ensure the business is a great place to work and always keeping customer service at its heart. The pandemic has forced all businesses to embrace digital technology, whether that be to facilitate communications, collaborative remote working or driving process efficiencies through greater connectivity. VEKA is continually investing in its products and services to bring customers innovations and digital solutions. The company has prioritised some projects that will make it easier for our customers to do business in a new way. This includes the development of ‘WinDoPlan’, VEKA’s new and exclusive online specification, planning and virtual presentation tool currently available to fabricators and soon to be available to specifiers. CSR is a key objective for the business and the company will further demonstrate its commitment as it transitions from its eco-product ‘Infinity’ to a long term commitment to introduce an increased recycled material throughout its product range. VEKA will also be exhibiting at the 2021 FIT show; continuing to support the industry and embracing face to face connections once again. Neil added: “Standing still is effectively going backwards, and that has never been an option for me or VEKA. We operate in a competitive environment and to remain a leading business in our sector in these challenging times, we must be flexible and nimble in our approach. We know where we are going, we have learnt from the events in 2020; we know what we are going to achieve and as a team we will tackle 2021 as part of our 2025 strategic plan not only with energy & positivity, but with a clear call to action.” www.veka.co.uk

WHEN TIME IS TIGHT, THINK TUFFX A stunning single-storey property in Scotland was given a highend exterior finish against the clock, thanks to glass supplied in double-quick time by TuffX. The client required top quality safety glass for a stainless steel balustrade, along with four staircase panels. Due to an upcoming site closure, the glass was needed fast – without compromising on quality – making TuffX the obvious choice for the job. Toughened safety glass specialist TuffX supplied 24m2 of 10mm toughened glass, with polished edges and dubbed corners, delivered directly to site via tail-lift.

and modern balustrade design, ensuring all-round views that follow the sun as it moves around the property throughout the day. “We delight in seeing properties transformed with the safe, stylish solutions our glass provides, said TuffX’s Managing Director Graham Price. “And we make sure our clients get what they need when they need it to make this happen – especially when time leads are tight.” www.tuffxglass.co.uk

“Our toughened safety glass comes in options to suit all aspects of a project – whether it is clear glass for great views, opaque glass panels for privacy or, as in this case, a combination of the two. And of course we can advise on what might suit best, with our team that has over 20 years of experience in the trade.”

EFFORTLESSLY PERFECT RESULTS WITH TUFFX

Which is why leading glass specialists TuffX were chosen to provide the 12mm safety glass for the three staircase panels and five landing panels of varying width and height needed for the project. The staircase’s combination of striking, minimalist glass, warm wood treads and contrasting sleek stainless steel handrails and fittings, create an elegant feature that would be a talking point in any home. Meanwhile, the open risers combined with the glass transforms what could have been a gloomy hallway into a bright, light and airy modern space.

Toughened glass specialists TuffX was chosen to ensure a smooth and trusted supply of quality glass for the project, cut to bespoke specifications including to accommodate where the balustrade met the angled roof.

“Our customers know they can trust us to deliver high-quality glass made to their detailed specifications quickly and accurately,” said Graham Price, TuffX’s Managing Director.

The extensive terrace runs the length of the elegant stone building, while a further area to the side of the property shares the same safe

The finished floating glass staircase with cantilevered floor treads looks stunning in its simplicity, like an optical illusion appearing to almost float in mid-air. But the toughened safety glass required to complete the job needed a special professional touch – a CNC finish, with completely smooth polished edges and dubbed corners, plus precision drilled holes along the bottom.

TuffX supplied 21.5mm toughened and laminated glass for the Easy Glass Prime frameless base railing. A combination of clear and opaque panels were used, for clear, unobstructed views over the green in front while ensuring privacy on either side.

The resulting near-invisible glass balcony is a simple, elegant, no-fuss solution that took just two days to install around the slate roof terrace.

The stylish glass-and-steel balustrade gives the raised terrace a modern and safe finish, creating a look and feel of space while providing protection from the wind and offering uninterrupted views of the grounds and rolling countryside beyond.

The key to making something look effortless is ensuring there is hard work happening behind the scenes — as in the case of a floating glass staircase recently installed with specialist glass supplied by TuffX.

A private residence in Cupar, Fife, in Scotland, completed a stunning roof terrace overlooking a park, with a simple yet elegant glass balustrade with toughened glass supplied by TuffX.

“Our experience as a leading safety glass manufacturer for over 25 years means whatever your project needs, you can be sure that from your first call with us to delivery direct to site, we’ll make the whole buying process as simple and effortless as the stunning result looks,” said TuffX’s Managing Director Graham Price. www.tuffxglass.co.uk

The Door Company Stafford is the latest high profile installation company to be awarded Installer of the Month for Endurance Doors, the premium solid timber core composite door brand. “Quoting on Framepoint® is fast; it saves installers time,” says founder Chris Brunsdon. “In an effort to claw back valuable hours our existing subscribers are quoting more and more of their work through the platform. This, together with activity from new subscribers that are coming on board every day, is really causing the numbers to surge.”

To combat lead time issues on PVCu, there’s never been a better time for installers to look at adding timber to their range, and The Joinery Network’s new Lignum suite of timber windows & doors could be the golden ticket for more profit in 2021.

NEW PARTNERSHIP LETS BUILDING OUR SKILLS ATTRACT MULTI-DISCIPLINE NEWCOMERS TO FENESTRATION INDUSTRY

SALES SUPPORT INVESTMENT FROM ALUK

At the start of the pandemic, AluK made a commitment to continue investing in the resources needed in order to support customers. In line with that, it has made two further appointments in its sales and projects team.

Building Our Skills has teamed up with the Learning Skills Partnership* in an initiative that is intended to attract newcomers into roles in the fenestration industry that go beyond those of the wellknown hands-on site-based variety. Going forwards, Building Our Skills will offer a range of apprenticeships run by the Learning Skills Partnership in the business areas of trade supply, accountancy, customer service, administration and project management. Of particular interest is expected to be the Trade Supplier Apprenticeship, which is ideal for those operating a trade counter. John Ogilvie, Director Building Our Skills explains more: “I think we would all agree that the growing skills gap in fenestration extends to none site-based roles. The truth is that the industry has not done enough to publicise the fantastic range of career pathways it can offer. What we want to do is offer fenestration industry employers better access to newcomers from all disciplines, offer them learning programmes, and

encourage them through other offerings such as our training academy and GQA’s extensive list of industry-relevant qualifications. We’d like them to commit themselves to this industry and forge their careers here in the long term. Working with the Learning Skills Partnership will help us to achieve these goals.” Learning Skills Partnership’s Simon Alsop, Managing Director added: “We, Building Our Skills and its partner organisation, GQA Qualifications are all committed to the principles of learning, people development and qualifications as multiple means of raising business standards and addressing skills shortages. Through discussions it has become clear that these are common goals in a challenging time, and I am delighted that the apprenticeships we can offer will help to promote and drive this agenda. What we can offer additionally is a recruitment service for employers – a one stop shop of finding them the right people locally based to their business, the right apprenticeships for the employee’s skills and the employer’s needs and help with accessing the funding to make this a really cost effective solution for bringing newcomers into the industry to fill gaps, and develop their careers.” More information on Building Our Skills Making Fenestration a Career of Choice - is available at www.buildingourskills.co.uk.

Mark Brown has joined as a sales manager for the South West region and Liam Hanson has joined as a project consultant working across London and the South. Both have huge amounts of experience in aluminium fenestration and will be helping customers to get the most from their relationship with AluK. Mark is supporting customers directly right across the South West and South Wales. Having worked on both the installation and fabrication sides of the industry in the past, as well as in system sales, he brings a valuable all-round perspective to the role. He said: “I know how important it is for a systems house to add real value to its customers’ businesses, whether that’s through the power of the brand, the usefulness of the support services or the quality and innovation evident in its products. The good thing about AluK is that it offers all three, so I’m really excited to be joining the team.” Liam’s role is in the commercial sector, helping to get AluK specified on major

He has more than 18 years in a similar role so has hit the ground running, joining a team which is enjoying considerable success in both the private and public sectors. Liam explained the attraction of joining AluK: “The set up at AluK is really impressive and the investments which have been made in the factory, in finishing and support systems mean there’s massive potential for growth. The new C70S window in particular will open up some fantastic new opportunities for customers and I can’t wait to get that product in front of specifiers.” Justin Hunter, AluK’s Managing Director, added: “While some of our competitors have retrenched and reduced the size of their support teams in the face of the pandemic, AluK has remained very much on the front foot throughout. Avocet are delighted to announce the appointment of Steve Ross as Commercial Director of their high security cylinder division Avocet ABS. Bringing with him over 25 years of cylinder business experience, the addition of Steve to the Avocet team is a clear message of the objective at Avocet to further develop the Locksmith and Trade business markets.

Elijah Onibudo

Marketing apprentice Sophie Winder joined Glazerite 18 months ago after several years working in customer service. Sophie, now 24, is one of an increasing number of workers who have recognised the value apprenticeships can offer regardless of age. Wellingborough-based Sophie says: “I chose to do an apprenticeship as a way to get into marketing. I was nervous about taking the plunge as I wasn’t a school leaver, and I wasn’t sure what to expect but joining Glazerite has proved to be a fantastic opportunity. I love working as part of a team with years of experience both in fenestration and marketing and I’m learning so much. I particularly enjoy the creative

“National Apprenticeship Week has been a good opportunity for us to recognise the hard work our apprentices contribute to the dayto-day running and future success of our company.” 68

Having worked with Mul-T-Lock and Assa Abloy, Steve is already well known within the industry and a friend to many of our existing business partners, who will be aware of his passion for this professional and specialist service sector. So why join ABS during a pandemic, isn’t there a risk? Steve was quick to respond, “2020 was a challenge for everyone within our industry, yet even with the trauma of Covid-19 and the uncertainty of a post Brexit UK, Avocet returned a positive year result. The business has worked relentlessly behind the scenes to reorganise itself for the coming year, a year which includes a number new product launches, and further appointments too”

25-year-old Elijah Onibudo joined Glazerite in January 2020 having been inspired to pursue an IT apprenticeship to gain new skills in a working environment. Elijah says of his role: “My job is really challenging and versatile and gives me the chance to learn new technologies and try new things. Being an apprentice at Glazerite has really helped me build and develop my skills.” He adds: “Undertaking an apprenticeship provides a varied learning experience and the chance to continually improve yourself by learning from the other people you work with. Whether you’ve just left school or you’re looking to change career, I would definitely recommend it as a way to get started in the fenestration industry.”

side of my role, which includes designing artwork and putting together videos and other content. “I have always found it easier to learn by doing a job rather than studying so the hands-on approach that apprenticeships offer is perfect for me. This role has really opened up a whole new world, and I love being part of such a dynamic industry.” Glazerite currently employs five apprentices across its marketing, IT, admin and procurement departments. Group HR Manager, Sue Wellings, has praised the contribution each of its apprentices makes to the business, saying: “National Apprenticeship Week has been a good opportunity for us to recognise the hard work our apprentices contribute to the dayto-day running and future success of our company. “Fenestration is a really exciting industry to be in and we’re delighted as a company to have been able to attract some real talent in our apprentices. We hope we can continue to help them reach their full potential.”

need support and continuity” commented Steve. “The ABS division at Avocet has continually supported the locksmith industry, and ensured that its partners have had access to products throughout, even with the sales office operating remotely; their passion is unquestionable, and a great foundation for us to build upon.”

Steve added “the team at Avocet are very excited about the releases we have planned, and we are sure our partners will like what we will be sharing with them. Everyone knows the ABS brand and the value it offers to both our partners and the consumer”

Avocet Hardware Group supply to the trade all manner of door and window hardware alongside the award-winning ABS range of cylinders and with many companies still facing uncertain futures, this appointment clearly highlights that Avocet are embracing 2021 with positivity and purpose.

“The pandemic has taught businesses important lessons and not least, customers

THIRD E-LEARNING COURSE LAUNCHED BY CIC TO HELP MAXIMISE THE BENEFITS OF REMOTE WORKING The Construction Industry Council (CIC), in partnership with e-Learning and accreditation experts Accredex, has released a third E-learning course entitled Smarter Not Harder. Smarter Not Harder supports companies and individuals with the most effective and efficient ways to manage remote teams. Prior to the COVID 19 pandemic in 2020 the number of organisations deciding to work remotely was only rising very slowly with some reluctant to offer employees flexible working arrangements. For most this was a matter of belief, trust, or fear. When the virus forced organisations to let employees work from home many were pleasantly surprised how well it worked. This created the motivation for change. Smarter Not Harder is here to help participants learn how to work and manage remotely, helping individuals, leaders

and teams to work smarter and unlock previously untapped capacity. The course shares tips, tools and techniques that can be easily implemented and have an instant impact on productivity. In fact most course participants see immediate results and typically achieve an improvement in productivity of 15-20% within a matter of weeks which equates to an additional 3 days per month. Graham Watts OBE, Chief Executive welcomed this second course saying, “This third course in our suite of e-learning training is timely given that COVID-19 has forced many companies to address their remote working arrangements and the Smarter Not Harder Course will bring much-needed support for the new way of working. We are really looking forward to offering it”.”
