ALL ABOUT HORTON PLASTICS
Rob Horton, Director at Horton Plastics, gives the answers to a Q&A about their business and their relationship with both REHAU and Shepley Windows.
Give us some background on Horton Plastics – what are the foundations of your business model?
“We’re a retailer specialising in selling uPVC windows, doors and building plastics to trade customers. I’d previously worked for a prominent fabricator as an on-site trade counter manager, but when that company folded, I was approached by one of their main customers – Carson Powell Construction. They wanted me to set up trade counter supply for the company, and I used my existing connections to help put CPC in contact with trade customers I’d worked with in my previous role.
“The rest, as they say, is history – I hit the ground running and founded Horton Plastics in 2017, opening our first trade counter in Stoke. We’ve enjoyed great success since, expanding to a team of 25 with three Directors. That’s down to our business foundations and principles –we pride ourselves on great service and exceptional value for money and are always willing to go the extra mile for our customers when required.
“These values were formalised and set out in our Customer Charter the same year we were founded, to let our customers know what exactly to expect from Horton Plastics. We make clear to them that nobody will go further than us in providing an outstanding service. This includes listening and acting on their feedback to improve their shopping experience, investing in systems and infrastructure to enhance our service levels, and assisting in their marketing and advertising strategies when called upon.
“We started working with REHAU after we partnered up with the fabricators Shepley Windows (Shepley). Though Shepley had originally been using a different polymer supplier, they soon moved over to REHAU due to customer demand. It’s not hard to see why – the REHAU name is recognised for its quality, so their frames are easy to sell. It’s also easy to get trade supply with the company, which definitely helped move things along!
“REHAU also stood out because of its environmental commitments. As part of our Customer Charter, we also focus on being environmentally friendly, and continue to look for more sustainable methods of waste disposal and recycling. REHAU’s work ensuring a circular economy of uPVC and maximising material recoverability meant we knew we were working with an
organisation that shared similarly green aims.”
Tell us about your approved installer scheme. Why was this introduced, and what have the wider benefits been?
“Horton Plastics’ approved installer scheme was set up a year after our 2017 founding. We’ve never really wanted to do fitting as we’d be treading on our customers’ toes, but we’re keen to work with installers that are similarly committed to providing a highquality service.
“What this entails is ensuring we work with fitters that have up-to-date health and safety credentials and insurance back guarantees, among other criteria. We store these credentials and update them each year. Our commitment in this area has been crucial to our success, and installers have responded enthusiastically. We’re now working with more fitters than ever before, and it’s encouraging to see such a response to maintaining best practice.”
A gross income of £7 million in seven years is a considerable achievement – what has been the key to your success?
“It goes back to the Customer Charter and putting customer service at the heart of our business model. It sounds simple, but the key is to just listen to the customer and do three things right – the right brand, the right price, and the right service. If you can succeed on these three fronts while being receptive to customer feedback, it’s a good recipe for growth.
“Again, our Customer Charter makes it very clear – ‘nobody will go further than us in providing outstanding service to you.’ That means being agile and adapting to their working practices. For example, we’re happy to provide a quote through any medium, whether that’s over the phone, online, on WhatsApp and so on.
“This also goes down to the little things, including providing the Horton Plastics toolbox to all customers. These are essentially goody bags that include swatches, colour sample, and voucher codes for our online store. We’ve sent out over a hundred, and tracking online sales from the vouchers, we can definitely say they’ve gone down well.”
“We also continue to invest in systems that improve the service we provide. This includes texting customers when orders are in, providing QR codes for easy fitting and allowing warranties to be registered online. We’re also expanding the infrastructure around Horton Plastics, including expanding our fleet to all new vans. If you’ll pardon the pun, we’re driven by the need to provide a top-class service for our growing customer base and ensuring everyone receives the best shopping experience possible.”
What REHAU products do you offer?
“We offer everything from the REHAU portfolio except the vertical slider.
Everything is made to measure, with the customers’ order passed to Shepley for fabrication. Of the products we do offer, we’ve definitely noticed the SLINOVA sliding door growing in popularity.
“Installers have been commenting on how its slimline design links into consumer trends, namely around wanting products with large panes of glass that can provide a more ‘commercial’ look. Given this, I’m not surprised that demand for the SLINOVA has increased, considering it was designed with a large glazing area that can let more outside light in.”
What is the relationship between REHAU, Shepley Windows, and Horton Plastics like?
“It’s very strong, and Shepley is integral to this. Some of the Shepley team have previously worked with REHAU and now have a close relationship with Horton Plastics too. We’ve definitely benefitted from these well-established lines of communication.
“How this works in practice is through a clear delineation of duties. REHAU handles manufacturing, and Shepley deals with fabrication, meaning we can focus on the retail side of things. In this respect, we’re basically an extension of each other’s team, and it works well – we can be confident in giving delivery dates to customers knowing REHAU and Shepley can provide products on time.
“A good example of this in action is when Shepley began fabricating REHAU’s Rio flush fit window around May-June last year. You’d think that overhauling operations like this would lead to some disruption somewhere for us, but it was all seamless. It’s reasons like this that show why the relationship is as strong as it has been, and why we’re selling more REHAU products than ever.”
What was behind the decision to integrate online sales into your business offering?
“We had started working on online sales just before COVID, and like many companies we were caught up in the ‘digital wave’ overhauling the shopping portal on our site. Though these obviously weren’t ideal circumstances, the lockdowns helped spur on the development of Horton Plastics’ online platform. We saw a huge level of demand for our products throughout this
time, which really kept our momentum going as a business.
“It’s also been crucial that we don’t rest on our laurels here. Our website now includes features that allow customers to design their desired windows step-by-step online, from the opening to the collar to the handles, before the going on to the checkout. Being able to visualise their order has been a key step in growing sales – we now deliver as far as Scotland, Cornwall and the Orkney Islands.
“We’re picking up lots of new and repeat customers via the online medium, and this has been good to see. It allows us to build footholds in new areas without impacting local trade, yet we’re still picking up business through our branches. It’s good to see all round, really.”
Tell us about your unique Electronic Point of Sale (EPoS) system – how does this work and what are the benefits?
“Well, we’re still working on it at the moment, so I don’t want to go into too much detail! In a nutshell, it’s next step for our already successful online offering, expanding on it while adding a new pointof-difference from other, similar websites.
“It revolves around the use of smart links, which provide a unique online account system for each customer. Using these links, customers can benefit from the same discount structure they would receive inperson. We wanted to be able to offer the same level of customer service as we do in person, but in a click-and-collect format. I’ve high hopes for the new EPoS system, and we’re excited for its full rollout.”

GAI DOOR SYSTEM, ELECTRIC HARDWARE, ACCESS CONTROL, SCHEDULING AND STANDARDS COURSES SECURE ACCREDITATION
The Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) has been awarded thirdparty accreditation for its globally-recognised programme of training courses and qualifications in door systems, access control, hardware scheduling, standards and regulations.
The accreditation by GQA Qualifications, a leading awarding body for specialist sectors and roles within the construction industry, affirms the content, quality and learning outcomes of the GAI education programme.
It covers the GAI’s full range of courses and qualifications, comprising: the Foundation in Hardware; Certificate in Architectural Hardware (CiAH); Certificate in Standards and Regulations (CertSRA); and the three Diplomas in Scheduling (DipGAI); Door Systems (DipDS); and Electric Hardware and Access Control (DipAC).
GAI Chief Executive Rachael Bliss said: “External accreditation is not just a validation of the quality of the courses and qualifications offered by the GAI, but also evidence of our commitment to continual improvement and development.
“This accreditation underlines our commitment to providing the best and most comprehensive training possible for those working in architectural ironmongery, door systems, access control and electric hardware, helping learners to build the demonstrable professional competence they need to develop their careers and succeed in an ever-more demanding business environment.”
The GAI’s education programme has developed
over nearly 60 years into an internationally recognised benchmark for expertise, knowledge and professional competence in architectural ironmongery and related disciplines. It is the only one in the world leading to qualifications and registered professional status in architectural ironmongery to British and European standards.
In recent years, the programme has been broadened to reflect changing requirements in the sector, including the launch in 2022 of three new Stage 3 qualifications: the Certificate in Standards and Regulation (CertSRA) and (to stand alongside the existing Diploma in Scheduling (DipGAI)) the new Diploma in Door Systems (DipDS) and Diploma in Electric Hardware and Access Control (DipAC).
GAI Training and Development Manager Rachel Tipton said: “One of the key benefits of accredited training is that it allows us as an organisation to take a wider view of best practice and demand across the construction sector.
“This will help us make sure that we develop the programmes and learning experiences that best support not only our learners but also the requirements of the customers to whom they will ultimately be providing products and services.
“This means that GAI learners and their employers can be confident that they are fully and properly trained in the specifics of their role and are therefore more able to perform their duties to the highest standards, on a consistent basis.”
GQA Qualifications is regulated by Ofqual, SQA Accreditation, Qualifications Wales and the CCEA, and is one of the most respected awarding organisations in the UK. Its accredited training service provides independent external monitoring to ensure that qualifications for industry are delivered consistently to the highest standards.
GQA Technical Officer Martin Sadler said: “GQA Qualifications is proud to support The Guild of Architectural Ironmonger’s commitment to delivering highquality, rigorous training through GQA accreditation.
“Our accreditation process provides reassurance that the required learning objectives are defined, the learning outcomes are verified, course content is properly structured, and training is delivered consistently with monitoring by a third party.
“By focusing on learning outcomes and emphasising an assessment of comprehension over attendance, this collaboration ensures that high standards of learning are maintained and consistently regulated, leading to a more competent and safer workforce.”

A SOUND NIGHTS SLEEP AT AIRPORT CITY TRIBE HOTEL, WITH
PYROGUARD PROTECT
Set in the heart of Airport City Manchester’s hotel district, TRIBE is the third new hotel to be built at the modern development. With the emphasis placed on guest comfort, the project demanded more from its fire-rated glazing systems, with Pyroguard’s toughened solution chosen to help meet the challenge.
Once completed, the ninestorey Tribe Hotel will provide guests and travellers with 412 bedrooms and suites, a restaurant and bar, gym and a crew lounge for airline staff.
At the centre of the hotel is a glazed internal atrium, leading from the main lobby area and around which many of the hotel rooms are located. With these rooms offering views out onto the atrium, it was essential that the windows were constructed from fire-rated glazing to ensure the future safety of guests, requiring 60 minutes integrity and insulation protection.
OWS was responsible for designing, manufacturing and installing all firerated glazing systems for the new-build hotel, working closely with main contractor MY Construction to help them meet the required levels of compliance.
As well as fire safety, ensuring high levels of guest comfort was also at the core of the design brief, creating a peaceful and quiet environment for all to enjoy. With this in mind, and given the hotel’s close proximity to Manchester Airport, acoustic performance was another critical specification requirement.
Andy Vooght, Sales Director at OWS, explained: “It was important to our client that we didn’t just meet the minimum decibel rating as stated by Building Regulations, but that we
exceeded it. Our goal was to achieve a sound reduction of over 50dB. Combining this level of acoustic performance with the required passive fire protection was a complex challenge, and after researching the market, Pyroguard was one of the only suppliers who were able to confidently meet this design brief without the need to compromise on safety.
"Their toughened Pyroguard Protect solution not only met the required EI60 fire performance and acoustic properties but also delivered excellent light transmission, making it the ideal choice for the project.
“Another benefit was Pyroguard’s locality to the project, with the glass manufactured from their site in Haydock. As well as aiding with logistics, this also helped to reduce the project’s carbon footprint.”
Installed within an aluminium frame, Pyroguard Protect EI60 was specified across 98 windows throughout the hotel rooms.
Andy concluded: “At OWS, we regularly partner with Pyroguard and have used many of their fire safety glass solutions on projects. The support from both their expert sales and technical teams has always been invaluable, working closely with us to help meet the required levels of compliance and, most importantly, provide the test evidence to back up the system specification.”

ROSEVIEW MOVES SASH WINDOWS FORWARD AGAIN - LITERALLY
Well-known sash window manufacturer Roseview Windows has developed SashSlides, an enhanced form of corner protection designed specifically for sash windows.
The company states that SashSlides provide three key benefits to themselves and their customers.
SashSlides make finished windows more stable when stood up. Moving windows around is easier, safer and quieter, and they offer better protection for the integrated cills inherent to sash windows.
Finished, glazed sash windows are difficult to handle because they’re heavy and tend to be larger than casements. Their frame depth makes them difficult to move around, and they have integrated cills that sit on the ground until the windows are fitted, requiring extra protection. Roseview also says that SashSlides are more sustainable than the alternatives. Rather than standard single-use corner protectors, SashSlides are reusable multiple times. Roseview’s customers can return SashSlides to the company on their next delivery.
Explaining the reason behind developing SashSlides, Roseview director Tim Bygrave said: “Some companies don’t use anything, but for years we’ve been attaching feet— or “skids”. They protect
the bottom of the window when moving them around, but they affect the stability of windows standing on the floor. And our customers will be familiar with the screeching sound they make as you slide windows around!
“There was nothing available off-the-shelf, so we decided to solve the problem ourselves. We’ve developed several profiles and components that are bespoke to Roseview, so we’ve already got good design and manufacturing contacts that we work with. That allowed us to come up with SashSlides, which are custom designed to solve several problems at once.”
“We’ve already started using them.” Tim continues. “For such a seemingly simple thing, they make a huge difference. The windows are much more stable, they slide well in any direction and they give great protection to the bottom edge of the cill.”
Roseview’s managing director Richard Burrells comments, “SashSlides are an example of small things making a big difference. They do exactly what we needed them to, and prove that innovation doesn’t have to be directly product related. SashSlides make life easier for us and our customers, and are another example of Roseview doing that little bit more.”

Keystone Market Research is excited to announce the release of its highly anticipated Autumn 2024 Consumer Fenestration Trends Report, a comprehensive analysis that offers unprecedented insights into homeowner preferences, spending plans, and trends within the fenestration and home improvement sectors. With input from over 5,600 homeowners collected through multiple surveys conducted this year, this report is the most extensive of its kind and promises to be an essential tool for businesses looking to stay ahead of market trends.
The Autumn report uncovers how homeowner preferences have evolved throughout 2024, providing detailed insights into materials and styles for windows, doors, and conservatory roofs, as well as glazing options. The report also covers homeowner investment priorities and anticipated spend for 2025, comparing it to spending trends from 2023 and 2024. The industry has experienced a wave of challenges as post-pandemic home improvement surges have settled, and this report aims to help businesses understand the trajectory for next year.
In addition to spend analysis, the Autumn report highlights key shifts in home project priorities for next year and beyond, with
prospects for fenestration looking positive both in homeowners’ short and long-term plans. Replacement doors are a key focus for short to mid-term projects, with windows emerging as a long-term priority.
Charlotte Hawkes, owner and director at Keystone explains further: “Despite the continuing economic challenges it’s been positive to see homeowners plans to continue investing in their homes. Interestingly, younger homeowners are leading the charge in planned home improvement spending next year, with 36% of this group planning to increase their budgets in 2025, compared to just 17% of older homeowners.
“Throughout the year, we’ve also seen a notable reduction in the number of "no preference" responses from homeowners, indicating that consumers are becoming increasingly decisive about their choices in fenestration products. Our reports seek to help the industry to understand these preferences and adapt their strategies and marketing to make the most of the opportunities available next year.”
Keystone is also proud to share that their work in delivering cutting-edge consumer & market insights and bespoke research services has earned them a finalist spot for Best Business Initiative at the prestigious G24 Awards. This recognition underscores their commitment to providing businesses in fenestration reliable and actionable research products, which have become a trusted resource for companies throughout the industry.

LANCASHIRE GLASS AND GLAZING CELEBRATES SIX-YEAR PARTNERSHIP WITH LEADS 2 TRADE
Leads 2 Trade, the UK’s leading provider of double qualified sales leads for home improvement installers, has announced a successful six-year partnership with Lancashire Glass and Glazing.
The long-term partnership highlights the effectiveness of its double qualified lead generation service.
Lancashire Glass and Glazing, a manufacturer of windows and doors established eight years ago, has been utilising Leads 2 Trade’s services to expand their customer base across the North West, from the Lake District to Buxton, Derbyshire.
Peter Birdall, MD of Lancashire Glass and Glazing said: “The nature of leads is they are either good or bad, and using Leads 2 Trade increases the percentage that the lead will turn into business. They are a vital accompaniment to our own website leads and referrals from existing customers, ensuring we cover all bases.”
Peter, who has over 30 years of industry experience, added, “I’ve worked with Leads 2 Trade in previous roles, which is why I wanted to partner with them again. Their leads have consistently proven beneficial to our business growth.”
The double qualified leads provided by Leads 2 Trade undergo rigorous qualification before being sent to the installer so that they can arrange a convenient time to visit the property and carry out a survey / quotation. Although
over 80% of the leads are supplied with a fixed and firm appointment, some companies, such as Lancashire Glass and Glazing, prefer to book their own using their own booking teams’ resource.
Andy Royle, co-founder and Managing Director of Leads 2 Trade, commented on the long-standing relationship: “We’re thrilled to have Lancashire Glass and Glazing as a long-term customer and their continued trust in our services demonstrates the value we bring to our installer members.
“Our focus on customer retention and providing high-quality leads has been key to maintaining partnerships like this one and Lancashire Glass and Glazing’s success showcases how our double qualified leads can significantly impact a company’s efficiency.
“It also demonstrates the different options and types of flexible accounts installers have when using Leads 2 Trade, from fixed appointments to booking direct with the consumer, so they can get the leads that are right for them.”

LET’S BE HONEST…
By Roger Hartshorn, Sheerline CEO
We made a simple promise on thermal performance. That all our products would meet the upcoming tightened Part L regulations introduced in the 2022 revision to Building Regulations.
We achieved this by developing our own thermal break technology, Thermlock®.
Wider, multi-chambered and less conductive than legacy polyamide systems, Thermlock®, which sits at the heart of all Sheerline products enabled our customers to sell an easily understood range with consistent U-values that met these new targets with straightforward glazing requirements.
Our values are calculated to the EN14351 and BRFC standards, at the prescribed sizes and simulated with realistic combination of profiles and glazing that our customers actually use. All to give anyone choosing Sheerline aluminium products complete confidence.
Previously having operated in the PVCu market – this straightforward approach, this ‘honesty’ comes as second nature to us. In fact, when we started operating in the aluminium sector, we were a bit aghast at how murky, obfuscating and sometimes downright dishonest some claims were.
It’s time to change all that. That’s why we are calling for a tightening of standards and want to challenge our fellow systems companies to make their U-value reports publicly available, as we have. It’s time people know clearly what they are buying, as it’s their necks on the line.
OUR CHALLENGE TO THE INDUSTRY
• Publish independently verified U-value reports. As well as having two BRFC accredited thermal simulators in house, Sheerline also gets its U-value reports independently verified, which should be the gold standard across the industry. It’s time industry bodies and building regulations made this compulsory.
• Stop selling products that don’t conform. The market tells us that many aluminium systems companies are paying lip service to these tighter thermal standards – claiming U-values based on a very ‘niche’ specification that rarely or never gets manufactured, then blithely carries on selling products they know don’t conform. It’s time that stopped too.
“We are heartened that other voices in the industry are beginning to pay at least lip service to bringing clarity to the subject of U-values in aluminium. Although as the tighter new standards came in over two years ago now, you do have to wonder how compliant their products were during that time.”
• Be honest and take responsibility. From systems companies ‘fabricating’ their U-value reports, to turning a blind eye to what their fabricators are making, to fabricators claiming U-values based on a spec of product they aren’t actually making. Everyone involved needs to take ownership and responsibility, making sure the companies supplying them are being honest and have the evidence to back up their claims.
We are heartened that other voices in the industry are beginning to pay at least lip service to bringing clarity to the subject of U-values in aluminium. Although as the tighter new standards came in over two years ago now, you do have to wonder how compliant their products were during that time.
Misrepresenting what you are selling can have disastrous consequences, just ask the Volkswagen group about its emissions scandal, or much more seriously the residents of Grenfell, and we are beginning to see window and door
companies being taken to court for claiming one thing and supplying another. Pleading ignorance just won’t cut it.
Building inspectors and specifiers alike are increasingly adamant about seeing the evidence that backs up the thermal performance claimed. Those who get caught out can face compensation claims and legal bills that could cripple an otherwise healthy business.
Against these increasingly serious consequences, why take the risk?
Our U-value reports can be viewed on our website here: www.sheerline.com/trust/. We don’t have anything to hide, if your systems house isn’t doing the same, ask yourself why.
Complying honestly doesn’t have to be complicated, it sometimes just needs a different way of thinking, or perhaps a different aluminium system supplier.
True authenticity comes from a blend of heritage styling and modern performance.
Single features may grab attention, but a true heritage sash window is designed to ensure the seamless integration of all its parts.
Everything has to work together: slim overlapping putty-line profiles, a 35mm midrail, heritage chalk finishes, seamless ornate sash horns, true mechanical joints, deep cills and innovative balance chamber covers, to name but a few.
Add to that a 1.2 W/m2k u-value without specialist glass, and you have a true conservation-grade sash window with outstanding modern performance.
Only Roseview’s Ultimate Rose sash window delivers all this. Because it’s more than a sum of its parts.

THIS ISN’T JUST COMPLIANCE, THIS IS ALUK COMPLIANCE
WHY FABRICATORS SHOULD BE QUESTIONING THEIR SYSTEMS COMPANIES ABOUT THEIR U-VALUE CLAIMS
Fabricators who are blindly accepting the U-Value claims being made on aluminium sliders and bifolds could be risking non-compliance with the new Part L and inadvertently misleading customers.
Whether it’s down to naivety, lack of knowledge or simple errors in calculations, I am convinced that some of the claims being made by certain systems companies on their aluminium products are simply not achievable.
This is not just a case of me knocking the competition, it’s a simple case of physics. The best way is to explain that is by showing the level of thermal enhancement AluK had to add to our new S140 sliding door to achieve U-Values of 1.4 double glazed and 1.1 triple glazed, and compare that with the enhancements that were in our original BSC94 which achieved U-Value performance of 1.8.
The thermal breaks in the frame of the S140 are more than twice the size of the BSC94 at 55mm compared with 20mm, and in the sash they are at least 50% larger at 38mm and 48mm rather than 25mm. (The 140mm system depth means these sizes can easily be accommodated).
However, many of our competitors fit thermal breaks in their frames and sashes which are very similar to the BSC94 (in frame depths which are considerably bigger) and yet they are claiming U-Value performance for these products which are almost comparable with the S140. It just doesn’t add up.
Thermal performance figures will obviously be misleading if they are being calculated at larger than allowable sizes, and AluK’s technical department has done a huge amount of work to evaluate the claims being made in the market and to try to establish whether other people’s thermal figures are being calculated to the EN14351 and BFRC sizes as AluK’s figures are. They haven’t got any clear indication on that yet.
I can assure our customers though that AluK’s thermal figures are all calculated to CEN sizes 2000 x 2180mm and all are third party accredited. I’d like to think that all the systems companies supplying sliders and bifolds into the UK market could offer similar assurances.
“There is of course the wider issue of how compliance is being policed and what the implications would be for a fabricator or installer who was fitting products which didn’t actually comply with the new Regs.”
Perhaps fabricators should be doing more to educate themselves and ask more direct questions of their suppliers about the thickness of the thermal breaks in their door systems and how the figures have been calculated.
There is of course the wider issue of how compliance is being policed and what the implications would be for a fabricator or installer who was fitting products which didn’t actually comply with the new Regs.
But, beyond that there is also the question of the responsibility that we as an industry have to homeowners, developers and housing providers to deliver products which do what we say they do.
According to Keystone’s most recent consumer fenestration report, energy efficiency is still the third highest priority for homeowners looking to invest in new windows and doors (after quality and security) and surely, they have to be able to trust every promise being made by suppliers on the performance of their products?
It’s not just a question of competitive advantage for AluK. I would argue that credibility of the industry, and more specifically the aluminium sector, is potentially at risk if buyers feel that they can’t put their faith in us.

THE DRIVE AXXENT LS FROM SIEGENIA
A MOTORISED LIFT-SLIDE DRIVE THAT MEETS THE MOST DEMANDING REQUIREMENTS FOR FUNCTIONALITY AND DESIGN
SIEGENIA is expanding the range of options available to fabricators, architects and end users with a new motorised drive for high-end residential and commercial buildings, which also meets the requirements of DIN 18040 for accessibility.
The DRIVE axxent LS boasts a powerful combination of style and functionality. The greatest strength of this new solution for lift-and-slide elements, which meets even the most exacting demands when it comes to room comfort, is the possibility of concealed installation in sashes made using any frame material. For the first time ever, this now also includes the slide drive in addition to the lift drive. Unlike before, the DRIVE axxent LS does not require any surface-mounted components that don't match in colour or any extra covers. The result is absolute aesthetic perfection.
COMPACT AND THEREFORE SUITABLE FOR SLIM PROFILE SYSTEMS, TOO
Thanks to their extremely compact design, both the lift drive and the slide drive are even suitable for use with narrow profile systems, further accentuating the design.
The other features of the DRIVE axxent LS also deliver room comfort. The discreet operating button is visually appealing – the only thing on the element that hints to
the fact this is a motorised solution. The function light integrated in the button provides a high level of operational reliability. The significantly reduced lifting time of just under 3 seconds is also particularly impressive, and the sliding action has been significantly improved to minimise noise compared with the previous solution. This makes the DRIVE axxent LS a genuinely convenient solution, as does the practical battery pack menu, which provides access to custom settings.
DESIGNED FOR SIMPLE FABRICATION AND INSTALLATION
The DRIVE axxent LS also boasts strengths when it comes to fabrication and installation. This starts with the simple pre-prepared package, which is ordered through the SIEGENIA online shop – with the option of purchasing custom-made thresholds as part of the COMFORT UNIT. Fabricators also benefit from the fast and fail-safe fabrication process, which takes
just 20 minutes longer than for manually operated elements. All of the components, including the pre-charged battery pack, are delivered ready for assembly in the exact size and quantity required – all in a single package. Another practical feature is the frame construction, which is identical to that of manually operated elements. This ensures that familiar processes can continue to be used and makes for lean warehousing. Installation of the drives and battery pack in the element is also extremely well thought out: at the heart of the system is the battery pack, which is fitted with long-life Li-Ion batteries and is positioned as an extension of the gear. The entire installation process is incredibly simple and can be done without any electrical training. This is only necessary for connecting the 24V system to the building's electrical system.
To find out more about the first completely concealed lift-slide drive, contact SIEGENIA on 024 7662 2000 or via email at info-uk@siegenia.com.
DRIVE axxent LS: the new concealed lift-slide drive. Designed to look good. Made to perform. We have completely redeveloped our lift-slide drive to reflect this philosophy. The battery-operated motor is completely concealed within the sash and moves large elements both quickly and extremely quietly. What‘s special about this is that it doesn‘t just look like a manual solution. There is hardly any di erence in the production process either. No thicker frames, no covers and no special design. All the components in the DRIVE axxent LS are easy to integrate into conventional profile systems and connect with Plug & Play. From manual to motorised in just 20 minutes. “PRODUCTIVITY IS KEY” SWISSPACER DRIVES AUTOMATION FORWARD
The warm edge manufacturer is working on automation solutions that insulating glass manufacturers can use to optimise their production processes.
Matthias Bach, who has been CEO of Swisspacer for a year, sees good growth potential with the help of technical innovations and services on both the national and international insulating glass market. The CEO and former Technical Director of Swisspacer, who is very familiar with the challenges facing the industry, explains which developments are in focus.
Energy efficiency will continue to be the main driver in the insulating glass market in 2025. Demand for energy-efficient buildings is rising steadily, particularly in Europe and North America. In more and more countries, stricter legislation is also driving this trend in terms of climate protection. “This creates fundamentally good prospects for manufacturers of insulating glass units that offer immediate benefits for energy savings, building efficiency and aesthetics with coated low-E glass, for example,” explains Matthias Bach. “Our spacer bars are a comparatively inexpensive, pragmatic and visually attractive answer to increasing the thermal performance of windows.” Increasing efficiency is always a top priority for companies, emphasises the CEO. With new automation solutions, the Swiss company aims to provide even better support for insulating glass manufacturers in future. This applies to order management as well as the processing of spacer bars. This includes, for example, intelligent load carriers, EDI interfaces or AI-supported processing of customer orders.
AUTOMATED PROCESSING FOR SHORTER CYCLE TIMES AND EXCELLENT AESTHETICS
“Together with a professional external partner from the industry, we have developed a machine that can be used to automatically insert and process our spacer bars. This means that much shorter cycle times can be realised with significantly reduced personnel deployment compared to the previous options - and productivity is ultimately the key,” says Matthias Bach. In times of constantly rising labour costs and the omnipresent shortage of skilled workers, productivity is crucial to remaining competitive. This new processing machine
is expected to be ready in summer 2025 and will offer “a very high-quality solution for processing our products, especially with pre-butylised corner keys.”
Swisspacer also has its sights set on other topics, such as additional functions for the spacer bars - for example in terms of acoustics and sound insulation or with regard to the reinforcement of insulating glass elements. The Swisspacer CEO adds: “We are also working on completely new types of spacer bar systems that will perfectly complement our current portfolio in the future. We can therefore look forward to further innovations from Swisspacer.”
SUSTAINABILITY REMAINS AN ONGOING FOCUS
Another ongoing topic at Swisspacer is the optimisation of its own processes to make them even more sustainable. “We have found a recycling solution to fully
return our own production waste and, in the long term, our customers’ offcuts to the production cycle,” reports the CEO. “This recycling process is expected to start in the course of 2025.”
In the coming months, Swisspacer will publish new EPDs that reliably demonstrate the lower environmental impact of Swisspacer products. The production site in Gliwice, Poland, is already powered 100% from renewable sources. “We continue to see ourselves as the market
leader for the complete package: quality, durability combined with performance thanks to an outstanding diffusion barrier, excellent aesthetics and transparency with verified CO2 footprint data,” emphasises Matthias Bach. “We are the only supplier to already have EPDs in accordance with EN15804+A2 (cradle-to-grave). I am confident that the combination of these factors makes our products the optimal choice.”
TEAM SPIRIT IS A TOP PRIORITY
Matthias Bach is also setting new accents in the corporate culture with “servant leadership”. “Swisspacer has a young, dynamic and highly committed team. I have already experienced at first hand how outstanding results can be achieved, especially when a team is truly “in the zone” and really enjoys working well together. Clear structures, flat hierarchies, appreciation and individual support - this creates a unified community and this is also noticeable for customers.”
Swisspacer will continue to think outside the box and explore new topics in the future. “I am firmly convinced that, with our strong portfolio and excellent team, we will continue to fulfil our performance promise as a leading warm edge manufacturer and convince more and more customers of the benefits of Swisspacer spacer bars.”

MADE FOR TRADE HAS ACHIEVED A KING’S AWARD FOR ENTERPRISE
ONE of the fenestration industry’s leading lights has been presented with a King’s Award for Enterprise, after successfully patenting a product which has revolutionised the roof lantern systems in the marketplace.
Made for Trade, a family-run business in Teesside with over 240 employees, was presented with the royal seal of approval this month by Mrs Sue Snowdon, His Majesty King Charles’ Lord-Lieutenant of County Durham.
Made For Trade, which manufactures and supplies aluminium glazing systems across the UK, won a King’s Award for Innovation, thanks to its revolutionary Korniche Aluminium Lantern Roof product, a patented solution to bringing light into a single-story extension.
Bradley Gaunt, Managing Director, said: “This award is the highest award you can get in business. I am absolutely delighted, not just for my family, but my team. We are truly honoured with this huge recognition for what we have done. We don’t have any
plans to export right now, however if ever we wanted to cross the waters, this award will have huge benefits!”
Made for Trade, which was previously known as Aanco, was handed from Father Richard Gaunt, to son Bradley, at the age of 23; he was later joined by brother and fellow engineer, Ashley, and more recently sister Lois.
When Bradley took over, the company had just 11 employees and working from one base, now it has three manufacturing sites in the Northeast and a headquarters of over 190,000 square feet, a 25-strong fleet of delivery vehicles and an engineering and innovation department, headed up by Ashley.
Bradley said: “Over forty years ago when we started, my father was manufacturing and installing Upvc windows on Teesside. We had a good name for ourselves, but the domestic market was getting tough and I wanted us to innovate and concentrate of B2B.
“We began focussing more on the trade manufacturing side and making great quality products that were easy market leading, at a really good price. From there we designed the Korniche Aluminium Lantern Roof. Structurally its stronger, aesthetically it’s so much better, it’s solar controlled, but most importantly easier and faster to install.”
Meticulously engineered to be the strongest and stiffest on the market, the Korniche roof lantern supports industry leading maximum glass sizes without the need of additional rafters. With no cutting or silicone required within the roof structure, the Korniche is the go-to Lantern for trade installers.
Bradley was joined by his family and members of his 240-strong workforce, at their headquarters in Wynyard, to receive his King’s Award for Enterprise from the Lord-Lieutenant of County Durham.
Mrs Snowdon said: “These awards are not easily attained; they are highly prized and the hallmark of excellence across the world. The King’s Awards are only given to companies who are particularly innovative in the marketplace.
“Made for Trade is now one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of bi-folding doors and the sole fabricator of the multi-awardwinning Korniche roof lantern product. I was truly impressed by how the company has grown and innovated and how it has disrupted the marketplace by designing a product which is not only more aesthetically pleasing, but quicker and easier to install.
“Made for Trade is a truly innovative and exciting British company, with generations of experience and an excellent team.” www.madefortrade.co www.korniche.co.uk
ENERGY EFFICIENCY FOR U
Energy efficient products remain a big driver for sales, with homeowners, architects and developers looking to improve a home’s thermal performance thus reducing energy usage and bills.
Selecta Systems Technical Manager, Cliff Prosser, explains the company’s philosophy behind ensuring that any new developments and enhancements continue to be fabricator and installer friendly, whilst also being as cost effective as is possible.
Windows and doors are often seen as a ‘distress purchase’. A purchase made out of necessity rather than pleasure. Replacing windows and doors within a home is amongst one of the largest investment renovations that a consumer will undertake
on their property. Energy efficient products will now very likely feature top of their requirements, when choosing replacement windows and doors, closely followed by security and aesthetics.
Window and door companies have the ideal opportunity to promote the energy efficiency of their products as one of the main USP’s. Whether this being new build projects or replacing ageing and tired windows and doors, there is a necessity and requirement to improve a homes thermal efficiency and reduce energy bills. The latest and future revisions to Building Regulations Document Part L and the Future Homes Standard (FHS) provides companies with a strong legislative platform for promoting the thermal performance of windows and doors within the home.
With the recent and future changes to Part L and the FHS, coupled with further calls for action on climate control and sustainability, our industry remains under pressure to further develop product energy efficiency innovation and sustainability. These changes have seen Selecta provide further investment in our research and development programme, working closely with ER Certification and Clayton Glass. These partnerships have led to some truly exceptional results with some very efficient and cost-effective solutions attained. The objective of our energy efficiency and sustainability R&D programme has been to continue to provide fabricators and installers with an effective and easily attainable solution, that meets and exceeds current and future requirements. This philosophy has seen our existing ADVANCE 70 system capable of achieving a U value of 1.1W/m²k with a 4/20/4, 28mm double glazed unit. Again, incorporating 4mm glass, a 40mm triple glazed unit will achieve a U value of 0.8 W/m²k, meeting
the proposed FHS target. All this has been achieved without any further modifications of our ADVANCE 70 system and very much standardised glass specifications.
We realise the fact that the FHS final intended 0.8 W/m²k U value requirement will pose a significant challenge to many in our industry. These planned tighter regulations may indicate that some products on the market may have already or be close to reaching their design limits of their product range.
This is why we are extremely pleased that our continued investment in our R&D programme has clearly demonstrated the excellent technical and thermal capabilities of our ADVANCE 70 system in current and future market conditions. Along the way, we have been able to retain the company ethos on providing fabricators, installers and consumers with the most innovative, proficient and cost-effective energy efficient window and door solutions on the market.
We firmly believe that by partnering with Selecta and our ADVANCE 70 system, our excellent thermal performance ratings present fabricators and installers with greater sales and marketing opportunities. The future proofed ADVANCE 70 window and door system, combined with our first-class marketing and technical support package certainly provides you with the tools to generate new sales leads and win new business.
COLOURING IN THE FENESTRATION INDUSTRY
Chris Champion, Editor of Glass News, speaks exclusively with Kolorseal’s Managing Director, Deborah Hendry.
In this session we talk about everything to do with colour, from the boring to the sublime, technical developments, sustainability, consumer demands, Geri the Giraffe and Kolorseal, now in its 20th year of business.
Painting in our industry has become the norm but you’ve been painting PVCu since 2004, long before it became popular. Can you explain why you became involved in this side of the industry as you were pretty much a pioneer?
Well, let’s face it, White, Mahogany and Oak were all pretty boring weren’t they?
You moved from PVCu to a whole range of materials including GRP, aluminium and other metals. Getting paint to adhere properly to materials like GRP was always an issue so how did you discover the correct methodology?
Just as industry standards change so do the products and technical developments across the sector. Being able to adapt to a changing market is so important. One of my bugbears though is regarding painting gaskets. Even the paint companies agree that whilst they can be painted, they will crack and lose their adhesion - trying to convince people otherwise is simply not right in my book.
Geri has now become an ambassador for Kolorseal, with her own page dedicated to her on the website. This has come a long way from the early days when I won her in a charity auction. When we ‘met’ she had yet to develop into the striking beauty she is today. She was initially orange all over so we decided to ask people to choose a colour for charity and this is how she blossomed into the Kolorful mascot you see today.
all taken time to learn not to mention the health and safety requirements. Our team is carefully trained to the highest standards including City and Guild levels.
As with all things, through Kolorseal I learned that there are paints and there are paints. Our paint has stood the test of time. Preparation of GRP is very important as some GRP skins can contain Xylene.
Paints have changed radically over the years with demand for eco friendly products. How has Kolorseal adapted to those demands?
With sustainability now in focus more than ever, consumers tend to look at the products they are purchasing and how beneficial they are for the environment. Currently, KOLORSEAL window coatings are manufactured from the highest quality raw materials and these fulfil the highest criteria. However, having the best materials for the job comes with many special health and safety conformities and testing, which doesn’t come cheap.
When anyone talks about the huge variety of colours that are available it always makes me think of Gerry the Giraffe and seeing him at a variety of industry functions. How did Gerry come about?
Has the painting side of our industry stabilised or are there constantly changing trends and new products that you need to learn about and embrace?
Building products are always being developed with new advancements being introduced across the industry. Some are dictated by consumers others by changes in weather conditions. Some believe that all products and adhesions will be the same, but understanding the importance of both preparation and application to the different products we colour coat has taken years to grasp. If people want a product’s colour to last and remain consistent to the guarantees we offer, it should be through people who have learned the craft.
Quality is absolutely key and it is relatively easy to spot a poor case of paint spraying. Kolorseal is known for its high quality but how do you maintain standards and ensure all products are finished to the highest standard?
High quality colour coating cannot be achieved with a quick fix using substandard equipment or practices by an untrained team. Being fully aware of spraying techniques, adherence, paint reactions, curing times has
The whole colour side is very technical, so how do you ensure that Koloseal’s staff are trained and can adapt to the new technologies as they become available?
When we have a new team member join us, they are individually trained by one of our experienced members of staff. They are not allowed onto a project unsupervised until they have passed all necessary proficiency levels.
I know you have longstanding members of your team but, I have to ask, how easy is it to find new members of staff as you expand your business, and how do you go about training them, both technically and instilling in them the same high standards that you have set?
Simply put Chris, it isn’t easy. We train people to recognise how each department works which gives them an understanding of the company as a whole. This has just become a little easier for them by having access to the new Digital Twin videos and Virtual Tour, so that the whole process can be discussed with one of our team leaders, as they begin work.
It becomes very transparent as people work with us into which department they are best suited. Normally at the interview stage, I can spot who has aspirations and for which department. People come to us with a desire to learn and to be part of a strong team.

that Kolorseal is one of the early adopters of any innovations?
Fabricators and installers are demanding customers and expect speedy and reliable service. What is the lead time and service Kolorseal offer that makes you stand out from other companies?
We offer a 5 day turnaround in 5 simple steps. The way we work has been developed over 20 years so we know how to ensure the Kolorseal team meets the needs of its customers. This makes us special and unique, I think.
It is tempting for fabricators and other manufacturers to bring their painting in-house, so how does your offering make it a better option to give the responsibility to Kolorseal?
Ironically, a number of customers have recently just joined or returned to us after thinking they could handle the turnaround, colour coating techniques and the quality standards themselves. We are now helping to rectify some of their previous painted work. We make outsourcing the colour coating of products, simple, fast, more cost effective and reliable. It is a specialism and we guarantee that we can colour match
products to the exacting standards that the industry expects.
I notice that after delivering the finished product you offer an Aftercare service. How does this work and is this a service that differentiates you from competitors?
Yes, I feel it does. Kolorseal is a focused and driven team, we have worked hard for our reputation. I personally want to ensure that each and every project looks as it is expected to look and in most cases I like to believe we exceed expectations. Making sure the fabricator, installer and end users have the best advice possible, we now have additional guarantees such as the Certificates of Authenticity, 10 year Guarantees as well as web downloads that help consumers understand how to maintain products and get the best out of their new investments.
There are always going to be the rush jobs: someone forgot to order a paint job or a customer has promised their customer a ridiculously quick turnaround. Can you cope with this if someone can’t wait for your normal lead time?
If we can manage it we will always try - this really does depend on our planned schedule for any week, but helping our customers is a priority.
You have an Assurance Certification scheme – does this add to the 10 year warranty you give on your paint finishes? Can you explain its significance?
The Certificates of Authenticity do indeed add to the 10 year warranties. They
give customers added credibility when approaching homeowners. For consumer’s being able to say they have ‘Kolorsealed’ products in their house gives them additional benefits when they are selling. It’s the reflection of quality that further backs our customers.
Apart from your spraying at your Huddersfield facility, do you offer a spraying service on-site, if required?
It is possible to colour coat a project onsite, but we tend to encourage people to have the work done at our facilities due to the sanitary, technical working conditions which gives better quality control on the overall finish. We would not promote the re-painting of old windows and doors, these need to be replaced as they have not been manufactured to be a different colour, particularly white ones.
I know you have customers all over the UK and I read that customers can deliver products to you to be sprayed, and picked up, but you also offer a delivery service. How does that work…..I may be down in Cornwall?
If there are any areas in the UK where we don’t currently deliver, we can organise a courier service should that be needed. Alternatively, it may be that suppliers and customers can work together through hub networks and we can tie into that.
How do you see the paint side of our industry developing. It seems that you can paint most materials, in any colour and even metallics – is there anything new in the pipeline and how can you ensure
As one of the first companies in the sector to colour coat products, we have adapted our services to the needs of the industry. It is a familiar service we have offered for many years as the company was purpose built for exactly that reason.
Recently we were asked to create a ‘castiron’ appearance for a consumer who was very specific about the overall finish. Understanding paint and how it works, means we can offer that type of bespoke service to our customers.
The current trend is to dual coat productsthis tends to be colour matching across the whole of an an exterior including fascias, soffits, drainpipes etc, whilst having a bespoke internal colour to match interior designs.
Colour will also become increasingly important in the corporate world where larger groups and conglomerates look to replicate their branding so that it is easily recognised.
Do you view your manufacturer, fabricator and installer customers as, well, customers, or are they partnering with you?
They are both but it very much depends on the type of working relationships that are sought. We build strong foundations with all our customers, but some wish to extend the power of offering the colour coating service by developing partnerships - this helps them to stand out. We offer marketing for particular bespoke colour projects, promoting both the fabricator and the installer.
You are already an award-winning company for your painting systems and service. Do you have any ambitions that have yet to be fulfilled?
There is always room to explore new products and new types of paint to colour coat but whatever comes along in terms of innovation, you can be sure that Kolorseal will be there leading the way.
The Quality Assurance Certificate is for customers to pass onto the end user which will add further substantiation to the company’s existing 10 year quality guarantees.

THE POWER OF COLOUR
Michelle Wright, Group Head of Marketing for the Glazerite UK Group, shares how the fabricator helps its customers meet the growing demand for colour.
As interior design shades go, most of us were probably pleased to see the back of avocado, leaving it well behind in the last century. Yet, according to a recent report from DIY retailer Wickes, the muted green shade - along with peach and coral pink - is back in vogue across bathrooms, fuelled by Gen Z and Millennials.
With homeownership amongst Millennials now at its highest level in over a decade, it remains to be seen if this passion for retro colour transfers to home exteriors. When it comes to boosting kerb appeal however, UK homeowners are certainly getting bolder with their choices.
uPVC too has come a long way since the ‘White Gold’ era. Though sales of the more traditional White might be slowly declining, the hue remains popular for its simplicity. Meanwhile, uPVC is still favoured for its cost
effectiveness, durability, energy efficiency, and low maintenance nature – characteristics that are continuously being improved.
Along with technological developments in the manufacture of uPVC, today’s windows and doors are also available in hundreds of colour ways. Whatever the homeowner’s requirement or the style or age of their house, there are endless shades to choose from, with consumer demand for colour showing no signs of slowing down.
Statistics from leading foil supplier, Renolit, reveal that when it
comes to colour, Anthracite Grey remains the biggest seller, ahead of Beck Brown and Rosewood, with solid colours also making up more than three-quarters of sales over woodgrain.
When it comes to different shades of grey, Slate, Agate and Pebble Grey are also increasingly appealing for homeowners. Indeed, one Glazerite installer, Northumberland Glass, has seen a recent uptick in shades of grey other than Anthracite.
Abigail Adams, Owner and Director of Northumberland Glass, says: “We are just about
to install a number of Silver Grey VEKA casement windows on a property near to our base in Berwick-upon-Tweed. The customer has chosen to replace the existing timber windows with uPVC to reduce the time required to maintain them while remaining sympathetic to the original painted grey windows.
“We are seeing more and more customers choosing to move away from the traditional White once they realise how much choice there is out there now. Alongside growing interest in various grey shades, we’ve also seen a rise in Golden Oak windows and doors, including patios.”
When it comes to making the right choice to suit the customer’s home, Abigail and her team will talk through the range of VEKA, Deceuninck and Residence Collection frames on offer. At the heart of every Northumberland Glass sale is a desire to ensure the customer makes the right choice to suit their home, whether it’s a new build or a period property. To achieve this, Abigail will visit prospective customers several times to build a relationship and to get to grips with their needs and their taste, even taking them to visit previous Northumberland Glass installs so they can see what their choice of windows and doors will look like in use.
Abigail adds: “When it comes to colour and style, it’s paramount
that the customer makes the right choice and selects the best shade and frame that will work practically and aesthetically for their home.”
To deliver the very best install, and to be in a position to offer customers a choice of colours and frames, Abigail values the support of Glazerite and its comprehensive portfolio. Alongside this choice, what matters most for Abigail is the trust she has built up with Glazerite, which is underpinned by regular communication and responsiveness, technical support, and reliable, on-time deliveries.
Glazerite’s range of windows and doors from the likes of Deceuninck, VEKA, Halo, Residence, DoorCo, and Solidor straddles both contemporary and traditional styles. With new colours being added across the ranges, and the option for customers to choose a different shade internally to fit with their interior decor, the choice for homeowners these days is vast and ever-growing.
Whether it is neutral grey tones, dark and dramatic hues, or a bright splash of vibrant colour, keeping pace with consumer demand for colour is vital for Glazerite so we can ensure our installers stay ahead of competitors who don’t have access to the same choices.

SAFEWARE
SIMPLIFYING SOLUTIONS
Epwin Window Systems has long been synonymous with offering the largest portfolio of PVC-U and aluminium window and door systems, providing its customers with a competitive edge. This advantage also extends to window and door hardware through its dedicated in-house division, Safeware. Chris Champion, Editor of Glass News, caught up with Rob Hartill, Commercial Director to discuss the value Safeware's products add to fabricators' businesses, enhancing efficiency and boosting their market position.
Congratulations on being shortlisted as Component Supplier of the Year at the G24 Awards. Your Safeware hardware division isn’t new but when was it first established?
Safeware was established as a brand in 2003, but Epwin Window Systems has been selling hardware for over 30 years. As the first systems house to offer a dedicated hardware division, we provide our customers with a unique resource. While other systems houses may have strategic partnerships
with hardware distributors, none offer an internal hardware business dedicated to serving the needs of its system profile customers.
What was the driving influence to start Safeware?
The driving philosophy behind Safeware is to simplify the fabrication process for our customers. Ordering hardware can often
be complicated, with multiple suppliers, deliveries and concerns about compatibility. Safeware eliminates these challenges by offering one order, one invoice, and one delivery, with the assurance that all products are fully compatible. This integrated approach streamlines the entire process, significantly reducing administrative time and complexity for our fabricators.
Is Safeware dedicated to Epwin Window Systems customers or are products available to any fabricator?
At present, Safeware is a dedicated resource for Epwin Window Systems fabricators and installers.
Is it a full hardware range and are the products your own or do you stock items from the whole range of hardware manufacturers?
We offer a comprehensive range, with over 2,500 SKUs that include locks, hinges, handles, stays, cylinders, vents and other furniture. Our products are sourced from
over 60 leading industry hardware suppliers including Cotswold, ERA, Fab & Fix, Hoppe, Maco, Roto, Securistyle, Siegenia, Stormguard, Trojan and Yale. This extensive portfolio allows us to meet diverse project requirements, covering all performance and price point needs.
As a supplier of hardware do you have your own testing and accreditation facilities?
All our products undergo internal indictive assessment before undertaking independent testing to ensure compliance across our window and door systems. This thorough process guarantees compatibility and performance for our customers.
Do the products comply with Document Q, Secured by Design and have all the necessary kitemarks?
Yes, when specified correctly, all our products comply with Document Q, hold Secured by Design accreditation and meet the necessary BSI Kitemarks. This eliminates the need for fabricators to conduct costly and time-consuming independent testing.
I can see the advantage of ordering profile and hardware from one supplier but can you expand on the advantages to the fabricator?
There are many advantages to working with Safeware. We have strategic partnerships with over 60 top hardware brands, giving us the ability to provide a broad range of products that meet any requirement— whether it's based on performance, price, application or function. Safeware’s relationships with suppliers also allow us to develop bespoke hardware solutions for our customers, which would be difficult for fabricators to justify directly. Moreover, our purchasing power ensures competitive pricing, which helps our customers remain competitive in their own markets.
Although ordering, delivering, invoicing from one supplier is a great incentive, can you stock enough product to match up with demands – after all you’re shifting a vast amount of profile?
Absolutely. We maintain robust stock levels, with over £2 million of inventory at any given time. Our On Time In Full (OTIF) rate is consistently above 98%, so our customers can rely on us as a dependable hardware partner.
“There are many advantages to working with Safeware. We have strategic partnerships with over 60 top hardware brands, giving us the ability to provide a broad range of products that meet any requirement—whether it's based on performance, price, application or function.”
Do the hardware lead times match up with those of supplying profile?
Yes, we are highly competitive in this area. Hardware is delivered together with the window and door profiles in the same consignment, so there’s no need for customers to wait for separate deliveries.
Is Safeware based at the same place as the warehousing for profile? I’m wondering how the two different product lines come together for delivery to the customer?
Yes, our hardware is stored at our state-ofthe-art warehouse and distribution centre in Telford, alongside our system profiles. This allows us to pick and pack hardware and profile orders simultaneously, ensuring a streamlined fulfilment process.
Keeping up to date on hardware innovation must be difficult, for instance is SensCheck, the integrated smart door sensor, available through Safeware?
Innovation has always been at the heart of Safeware. We've collaborated with our hardware partners to bring unique solutions to market, such as the Safeware 7 and 8 door locking systems and the SFS Dynamic 2D hinge. More recently, we’ve collaborated closely with Yale and became the official launch partner of Yale SensCheck™ window and door locks. We are continuing to work closely with Yale to extend the SensCheck™ range and incorporate more smart solutions into our offering.
Are all the Safeware products compatible with your different profiles – Profile 22, Spectus, Patiomaster and Stellar?
Yes, we offer complete hardware solutions that are compatible with all our systems.
Do you provide technical assistance on the hardware you provide and is that a different team from the team who would assist fabricators with profile queries?
Our business is headed by a team with extensive experience. I myself have over 35 years in the industry, having worked at Assa Abloy, Hoppe and ERA. Paul Hinds, our
of Sales, has been with Safeware for 20 years and has over 25 years of experience in hardware sales. Our Supply Chain Manager Helen Mason oversees inventory management and OTIF performance. We align closely with Epwin Window Systems’ sales, marketing, and supply chain teams to ensure comprehensive support for our fabricators. Does Safeware’s growth mirror that of Epwin Window Systems, or does one side drive the other?
Both businesses are strong and work closely together. Safeware is an integral part of our proposition and has seen consistent year-on-year growth reflecting the synergy between the two businesses.

TOMMY TRINDER OPENLY SHARE KPIS ON NEWLY UNVEILED WEBSITE
Software pioneers, Tommy Trinder, have taken the unusual step of openly sharing sensitive key metrics that allow visitors to track the company’s performance and growth on their newly updated trade website.
The new site, launched to mark the firm’s 10th anniversary, represents a significant enhancement designed not only to improve user experience but also to promote transparency by sharing sensitive Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) with the industry.
Visitors are provided with easy access to valuable insights into the company’s metrics, including the number of window firms using Tommy for their quoting (updated daily), together with the value and volume of quotes done on the platform by installers every month.
"We believe our numbers tell a powerful story of how our industry is changing,” says Tommy Trinder’s founder and CEO Chris Brunsdon. “From one man-bands to nationals and from the highlands to the channel islands, glazing firms are going digital with their selling process. By openly sharing our data with the trade, we are hoping to bring attention to the scale of the shift that is taking place.”
Some of the numbers published on Tommy Trinder’s new website are indeed striking. At the time of writing the website
is suggesting that some 30,000 quotes are prepared for homeowners via the Tommy platform every month, at a value of (a somewhat eye-watering) £219 million.
“Even we find the numbers a bit nuts,” says Chris “It’s remarkable that in two years, we’ve seen the values quoted by installers on Tommy go from under £100 million a month to over £200 million a month. Interested parties can now literally ‘watch this space’ to see how quickly that increases to £300 million per month!”
Another big number tracked on the site is the volume of makeovers prepared by installers; currently sitting at just under 5,000 per month and trending upwards.
“The makeover tool, where installers provide a mock-up to the homeowner of their new windows in situ, is definitely becoming a staple part of the quoting process,” says Chris. “When you consider the ease with which consumers are able to model other significant purchases like cars or kitchens, it feels inevitable that offering the client a visual of windows and doors will become the norm. Customers love being able to ‘try before they buy.’”
Data is freely published at www.tommytrinder.com, where visitors can also book a free demo of the Tommy Trinder sales platform.

IMPROVING YOUR IMAGE
Selecta Systems
Marketing Manager, Mark Walker and Lesley Edgar, Managing Director at 3D visualisation provider Red and Gray Ltd, talk about the use of CGI imagery and new the advancements in AI technology within the fenestration industry.
In today’s digital world, it is common knowledge that 3D visualisation is firmly entrenched as a well-used tool to make advertising any product easier and less expensive to manage. However, not all CGI is good CGI. In the same essence not all AI composite is good AI composite. Mark comments, “Selecta have always been big advocates of CGI and the use of AI technology. Over the years we have outsourced our CGI requirements to Red and Gray of whom we have built an excellent working partnership with. Providing a quality service in both CGI and AI technology, it became clear that Red and Gray have a strong wealth of experience when it came to windows and doors. They have become very popular within the fenestration industry as their knowledge of the products is second to none, adding that to their first-class ability in CGI and AI imagery, they offer the perfect solution to our marketing needs”.
“Our latest projects have included CGI generated product animations and images. Using this technology has taken our marketing support offerings to a new level, allowing ourselves to get the best visual representation of our products and their surroundings. The MASTERslide Patio Door and ADVANCE 70 Flush Sash Window animations have been a huge success with our customers, providing them with a quality product sales tool of which can be branded to their personal requirements”.
Selecta have embraced the skills of the Red and Gray team, which in turn has not just helped them
provide additional marketing support to their customers, but also boosted their marketing campaigns across various platforms.
Lesley says, “We love working with Mark and the team, they have a great understanding of what is needed to get the right message across to their working partners. Companies can sometimes ‘cut corners’ by using poor imagery, whilst being totally unaware just how much damage this can do to their brand. It’s fantastic that Selecta recognise this and the benefits of embracing CGI and the use of AI technology”.
“When a fenestration company offers top quality products, many with important key features, its vital they don’t overlook the importance of investment in quality imagery to reflect the essence and characteristics of their brand and its values. From windows and doors to handles, tracks and even hinges, time and money has been given to research
and develop all these products, but many are then advertised with poor quality images, the detail in every image is key “you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression”.
“Why sell high quality products without matching imagery? Is it cost, the opinion of the person signing off the marketing images, or something else? The most important aspect of any marketing imagery is how do you want your potential customers to see your product? Art/illustration is the door to the clients wallet, it’s all about selling a dream or an aspiration to own that product, so the most accurate, attractive yet inspiring images are our priority”.
Red and Gray offer a full inhouse range of design, CGI, animation, configurators, AR and VR
otherwise it won’t last for more than a second on screen. As with any service provider there is a cost for good CGI imagery or AI composition.
services, as well as the new AI technology, which is now being used by many of their clients. Having been established since 2001, the business has become the go-to for digital image services. So, how can fenestration businesses benefit from good CGI?
Lesley says, “Having the best imagery is more important than ever. “Many businesses don’t have time/space to photograph their products without the massive expense of hiring a studio or bespoke location, sending staff to manage the project, hiring a photographer, installing the product or building an appropriate set, the list goes on”. We now live in a world where everything is fast paced and visual, scrolling on autopilot. Imagery is everything, it needs to be eye catching and relevant,
However, Lesley added that the reality is much more cost efficient than you might think. “Clients often worry about the cost of digital imagery. The reality is, compared with traditional photography and set building, its inexpensive, its flexible and we keep up with all the current trends so can advise on the best way to showcase your products.”
“All 3D sets, geometry and final images we create for our clients are archived so can be used again with a change of product, updated style or décor, or even a different window or door. By reusing an existing set, you can have a whole new image for a fraction of the cost and the time. This is something that Selecta took advantage of, when showcasing both the MASTERslide Patio Doors and the ADVANCE 70 Flush Sash Windows”.
The world is changing. AI and CGI are fast becoming the future for any business. Most buyers are not interested in the detail until they are ready to buy, so it is all about an image being good enough to make the customer stop and take notice.
Mark concludes, “We have been delighted with how Red and Gray managed and delivered on all of our expectations. They have enhanced the visual appeal and representation of our products and options, of which in turn provides added benefits to our working partners. We look forward to working with Lesley and the team again on our next and future projects”.

THE RISE & RISE OF TOMMY TRINDER
Window installer turned software guru, Chris Brunsdon, talks us through his journey from family installation business to developing the Tommy Trinder app.
From one-man bands to nationals and from the highlands to the channel islands, Tommy Trinder has established itself as go to app for installers looking to add pizzaz to their sales process.
But what inspired erstwhile window installer, Chris Brunsdon, to venture into
software in the first place? And what, exactly, makes Tommy Trinder so special?
“I’ve always loved selling windows,” says Chris. “30 years in the industry, and I’ve tackled most parts. But selling windows face-to-face has always been my favourite bit. My Dad sold windows for 50 years, and his dad before him too. So, I guess it was in the blood!”
Tommy Trinder’s platform was born of out of Chris’ frustration. Frustration at trying to sell windows to customers with the wrong piece of software to hand; software that was clunky, overly complicated, built for manufacturers not installers, but most of all, he says, dull and boring:
“When I was out selling windows for my Dad’s business, I just wanted a piece of
software that had some wow factor about it, something that would get the customers heart beating faster and help me take an order. There was plenty of tech that was great for running factories, but none that was much help when I was sitting on a customer’s sofa and trying to make a sale.”
7 years of development and some hefty investment later, Tommy Trinder was born. And the firm’s rapid rise has certainly been impressive; Over 600 installation firms now
use the app for selling, and an eye-watering £2 Billion (yes Billion!) of work has been quoted to homeowners via the app so far in 2024. But how does Chris account for the growth? And why is Tommy Trinder any different from other quoting software?
“First and foremost, Tommy Trinder is fun to use. And super-easy,” says Chris. “You just draw with your finger or mouse, like sketching on a pad, and ‘as if by magic’ windows and doors appear in full, photo-
Chris Brunsdon
realistic glory. As one of our customers put it ‘If you can use an etch-a-sketch, you can use Tommy Trinder.’”
The firm’s flexible and affordable pricing policy has also proved a winner. Tommy is available from £100 a month and there’s no initial outlay, which means that installers of all sizes can benefit. Getting up and running is quick too, with almost no set up required on the part of the user. The app is delivered customised to each installer with their range of products pre-setup. And, according to the firm, any product, in any material is possible. “It’s pretty common for an installer to have to source from multiple suppliers
on one job nowadays - a composite door, some sash windows and an aluminium bifold, for example,” says Chris. “Often this means juggling a plethora of pricing apps, spreadsheets, and pricing books just to get the quote out of the door. It drives installers nuts! With Tommy Trinder any product, in any material – PVC, ali, timber, steel – from any supplier, can be quoted. All through one app.”
One of the features that has proved increasingly popular is the app’s ‘makeover’ tool. ‘Makeovers’, where customers receive a render of their new windows and doors super-imposed over an image of their property, are fast becoming a staple part
of the quoting process according to latest analysis of quotes prepared by installers on the app. The firm reports that over 60% of all quotes prepared for homeowners are accompanied by a visualisation, compared to just 25% two years ago.
“When you consider the ease with which consumers are able to model other significant purchases like cars or kitchens, it feels inevitable that offering the client a visual of their new windows and doors in situ will become the norm,” says Chris. “And makeovers make sound business for installers too – not only does an impressive visual wow customers and win orders, but being clear about what you are going to fit at the quoting stage reduces error and rules out misunderstanding from the get-go.”
With the market slowing and leads thinning, how does Chris see the future for Tommy Trinder?
“Market sentiment has definitely changed,” says Chris. “But interest in Tommy Trinder has continued to surge. Enquiries were up 50% this summer, compared to last. Pro-active installers are looking to shore up conversion rates and keep growth on track by bringing in tools that give them a competitive edge; when the going gets tough, the tough get going.”

APEER’S CHRISTMAS CRACKER
Apeer’s managing director, Asa McGillian, explains how the leading composite door manufacturer’s unique, magnetic wreath holder system gives installers a winning advantage – and especially in the run up to Christmas.
In the run up to December last year, a home improvement website conducted a survey to find out which parts of the UK would be most likely to hang a Christmas wreath on their front door.
The results revealed a rather surprising north side divide, with Belfast, Leeds, Glasgow, Manchester and Edinburgh taking up the five top spots for wreath loving homeowners – in fact eight of the top 10 locations were all in the Midlands or above, although there was of course plenty of Christmas cheer to be found in the south of the country as well.
Perhaps most importantly, the research itself followed the revelation of how much time and attention design savvy homeowners
from across the UK put into customising their front door over the Christmas period. In 2023, between 1 October and 1 Nov, the use of the ‘christmaswreath’ hashtag was reported to be up 233% on TikTok, while searches for ‘Christmas Wreath’ were up 163% on Pinterest.
For Apeer’s managing director, Asa McGillian, the numbers simply confirm the feedback that the leading composite door manufacturer had already received from homeowner customers, those who had indicated that they wanted to spend
money on seasonal wreaths but were asking for a better way to attach them to their new entrance doors.
As a man who has an uncanny ability to identify an opportunity in the market, Asa was quick to find a modern solution to the traditional, and unreliable, plastic suction cups used to attach wreaths to composite doors, unveiling the unique ‘Magic Wreath’ system at the 2023 FIT Show.
“We know how popular door wreaths are, but as anyone who has tried to fit one to a composite door with plastic suction cups will know, they can easily fall off, get blown away or end up scratching the surface of the door,” explains Asa.
“Our solution was to develop a system that incorporates strong magnets that are hidden away inside the composite door at the manufacturing stage. Our specially designed ‘Magic Wreath Holders’, can then be attached magnetically at two points on the door, without damaging the surface finish and are secure enough to withstand any movement even on windy days.”
Originally pitched as a £250 upgrade on any of Apeer’s 70mm and 120mm doors, the manufacturer is now offering the kits free of charge, a move that recognises the challenging trading conditions of 2024 and one that gives its installer partners a compelling USP in the busy run up to Christmas.
Of course, wreaths are not just for Christmas. The company’s online Doorbuilder programme illustrates the year round appeal of the Magic Wreath holder with examples of Halloween or Spring style wreaths, highlighting the changing
versatility of this added value addition to their front doors.
In addition, Apeer has also ensured that trade partners are well equipped to promote the benefits of the magnetic wreath offering to their homeowner customers, by giving them access to showroom marketing kits. These include a range of marketing materials that include professionally produced posters, stickers, fliers and door hangars, as well as demonstrator ‘wreath boards’ that can be used on showroom doors that haven’t been specified with the internal magnet system.
Homeowners can therefore be inspired by getting a much clearer picture of how the wreaths work in a showroom environment and they can also scan a QR code with their smart phone to access more details.
“We know that aesthetics, security and energy efficiency continue to be the primary drivers for sales among homeowners looking to upgrade their entrance door, and we have all that covered,” says Asa.
“We’re proud to offer the most comprehensive, best looking and highest performing range of composites on the market, but we also recognise that trading conditions are still challenging and that our trade partners deserve every advantage we can give them.
“Additional benefits are key, which is why our Magic Wreath Holders – which are completely unique to Apeer – is so important because it gives an opportunity to differentiate from the competition and win sales on quality, rather than price.”

A SUPERIOR ENTRANCE DOOR SOLUTION SUPERBLY ENGINEERED DOORS
Homeowners continue to invest in more energy efficient, more attractive and more secure entrance doors, but is there a better alternative than composites? Danny Williams, managing director of Gerda Doors, believes he has the answer…
The energy crisis may well be past its peak, but it has left a lasting impression on homeowners across the UK, with many looking to invest in long term solutions to reduce household bills.
Energy efficiency, alongside aesthetics and security, therefore remains a key driver for sales in the home improvement market and with conflict in the middle east raising concerns over oil and energy prices and a new Autum price cap pushing up the cost of gas and electricity by 10%, it looks set to remain as a high priority for consumers. So, what are the options for homeowners?
A ‘whole house’ upgrade for a full set of new double or triple glazed windows – or even a big-ticket conservatory makeover – would undoubtedly make the biggest impact and present a lucrative opportunity for any installer fortunate enough to win the project.
It is far more likely however, that the average household may look at more costeffective options at first, starting with a replacement for their old, draughty entrance door.
And after some ‘Googling’, they will inevitably be bowled over by the advertised
benefits of composite doors. An easy win for installers then?
Maybe at first, but as Danny Williams, managing director of Pioneer Trading explains, composite doors can often lead to more trouble than they’re worth down the line: “Composites have come a long way over the years, homeowners are now spoilt for choice when it comes to styles, colours and glazing options and they will all boast the very best U values and security credentials as well.
“The problem, as most installers will know, is the risk of warping and bowing. In many cases, the product performance is lacking and so is the quality of service from higher up the supply chain,” he adds.
“This means that what should be an easy, profitable sale, can quite often turn into a headache of remedial work. Fortunately, there is now an alternative solution to composites, with Gerda Doors, which offer the perfect blend of high-end aesthetics and
performance for only a fraction more of the price. And best of all, they’re guaranteed not to twist or bow.”
Danny’s passion for Gerda Doors stems from his own frustrations with composites, and is the result of a personal mission to find a better solution for the entrance door market. That mission, ultimately, brought him to Gerda, a well-established and highlyrespected brand in mainland Europe.
Suitably impressed, Danny made the decision to introduce it to customers in the UK, with an initial launch at the 2022 FIT Show and now promoted through 70 dealers across the country, a network that is expanding as consumer buy-in goes from strength to strength.
“The main difference with Gerda is the construction,” says Danny. “They are engineered from steel and aluminium with a highly energy efficient polyurethane core, so they can offer U values from as low as 0.74 W/m2k, and they are strong
enough to withstand even the most extreme temperature changes.
“That inherent strength also means they deliver market leading security, with RC3 and PAS24 accreditation as standard.
“Gerda ensures peace of mind for installers because they can fit and forget, they don’t have to worry about getting callbacks from customers, time wasted returning to site or any potentially damaging reviews,” he adds.
With the latest Keystone Market Research report highlighting replacement doors as a key focus with homeowners for short to mid-term projects, and with demand for energy efficient products looking set to remain high for the foreseeable future, Danny argues that the advantages of Gerda Doors means that they can almost sell themselves.
“The feedback we have from installers is that if you have Gerda Doors in your showroom, then they’re very easy to upsell from a composite,” he concludes. “That’s because you can feel the difference in quality immediately, you can sell on the premium aesthetic, the hardware, the finish and the weight and feel when opened and closed.
“At this price point, a few hundred pounds more spent on a Gerda entrance door over a composite is a very attractive proposition, especially when the performance and product is so evidently superior.”

HARDWARE & SECURITY
Kestrel Aluminium Systems and ASSA ABLOY are celebrating a long and fruitful relationship that has seen the two brands collaborate on ASSA ABLOY’s new Concealed Vertical Rod (CVR) exit hardware range.
The new range offers universal application on all Kestrel Aluminium Systems’ Commercial Door and Frame products and has been tested to PAS 24 on its single and double Thermal Commercial Door sets.
In the development stages of the new CVR hardware range, Kestrel Aluminium Systems was one of the main system houses that aided ASSA ABLOY. By providing its decades of knowledge on the industry, Kestrel was able to help create a range that was missing from the market.
The ASSA ABLOY Touch Bar Panic Unit offers an aesthetically pleasing
solution and provides additional safety benefits thanks to its low projection from the door face. This makes it ideal for areas such as sports halls, gymnasiums, hospitals, and schools with high traffic and risk of abuse, as well as front of house, where elegance is key.
The Push Bar Panic Unit is ideal for all door types, including fully glazed doors without a mid-rail. It can be cut to size, as can the Touch Bar Panic Unit. The two-point shootbolt locks into the threshold and the transom is withdrawn by pressing down on the push bar. The Push Pad Emergency Unit offers a more discrete solution for areas where users are familiar with the space and evacuation procedures with the same shootbolt lock mechanism.
The new Outside Access Device (OAD) and Security Escutcheon are elegantly designed to complement
and enhance any Kestrel Aluminium Systems’ door set escape routes.
Crispin Jedrzejewski, Head of Technical & Design, Kestrel Aluminium Systems comments: “We have a long history with ASSA ABLOY, going back nearly 30 years. Our collaboration on the new CVR Exit range is the latest example of the great work we do together. This is a relationship that we value hugely because of the way it enables both brands to feed off each other’s expertise to create better products for our customers.”

That’s why the new system offers five hook multi-point locking with DUPLEX hook units, a spring assisted centre case for lever applications, and all locks are extendible with connectors to take M8 threaded high security shoot bolts.
As with every multipoint lock developed by
Ingenious, this system meets rigorous industry specifications including PAS24 and Secured by Design (the official policebacked initiative).
In line with Ingenious’ ten year ‘fit and forget’ guarantee, operation and compression is smooth for ease of use over the product lifecycle. Keeps are also high security and suitable as standard for double door applications.
The fully symmetrical onepiece keeps are designed to accept a concealed flip-over lever, driving shoot bolts to the head and threshold. This clever design has turned a simple keep into a French passive lock and saved on a set of handles.
These added security features are another way to enable Sheerline’s innovative Index™ BiFolding Door system to stand out. Launched in August 2024, the product was developed to help

VBH, the company behind the greenteQ hardware brand, has increased the reach of its Clearslide inline sliding patio door lock by adding two additional systems to its profile compatibility list.
Following requests from a number of fabricators, VBH’s new development gives manufacturers of Liniar and Eurocell PVCu sliding doors access to the popular Clearslide 8-hook patio lock.
The new solutions sit beside the existing hardware for Deceuninck, Kömmerling, Rehau and Veka PVCu sliding doors.
The lock and keep are produced using hardwearing stainless steel and are covered by a 10year guarantee.
VBH advise that the eight hooks and two anti-lift pins ensure that Clearslide locks provide an extraordinarily strong connection to the frame. The lock meets the requirements of all relevant security standards and is covered by Kitemark
KM727991 (Building Hardware used in Windows & Doorsets).
Clearslide locks can be operated by the greenteQ Alpha Patio P-Handle, which boasts a 10-year greenteQ surface guarantee on all ten finishes.
VBH suggest that installations near the coast may benefit from the architeQ Coastline stainless steel handle set that is back up by a 25-year surface guarantee, again on all finishes.
Alpha and Coastline are interchangeable so upgrading when required is easy.
VBH marketing manager, Gary Gleeson, says; “Clearslide is an integral part of our Lifestyle range of patio door hardware, and is extremely popular with fabricators and installers of the four original launch profiles. We received a number of requests from Liniar and Eurocell users who wanted to use Clearslide on their doors. The figures stacked up, so we were delighted to expand the range.
“Our New Product Development Team is currently looking at more Clearslide solutions, so we’re not done yet!” Get in contact with VBH on 01634 263263 or email them at info@vbhgb.com.

A COMPLETE WINDOW HARDWARE SOLUTION FROM CARL F GROUPCO
Carl F Groupco is highlighting sustained hardware demand for casement windows.
Owen Coop, CEO of Carl F Groupco, explains: “While the industry has recently shifted its focus towards feature windows and their value-added potential, for most fabricators it is the standard casement window that remains a core product. This segment represents a significant proportion of sales and continues to experience steady growth, as reflected in the demand for casement hardware.”
Carl F Groupco stocks an extensive portfolio of lock and handle options for casement windows, encompassing everything from the reliable basics to advanced value-added options that bring greater opportunities. Remote window control systems and enhanced security add-ons help customers maximise every sales opportunity.
The company stocks 57 hardware brands including Roto, Siegenia, Fuhr, Maco and Yale. Together with window locks and handles, add-on hardware such as friction stays and vents provide a complete window hardware solution from one company.
Carl F Groupco also stocks a comprehensive selection of specialist window hardware solutions for reversible, tilt-and-turn and vertical sliding windows. Owen said: "Our window hardware portfolio is extensive and designed to meet the evolving needs of the industry. While casement window hardware remains a vital part of our offer, we understand the importance of delivering high-quality solutions for every window application, no matter the project requirements.”
In addition to the strength of its hardware offer, Carl F Groupco is also renowned for exceptional customer support. This includes bespoke hardware kit options tailored to individual customer needs, whether it is profile-specific components or mixed manufacturer parts to complete a window set.
The company holds up to £5 million in stock at any one time and has an ‘On Time In Full’ target of 98%, which it measured on orders rather than by component, a much more stringent standard. It can make daily, next-day deliveries, including to Scotland and the Scottish Highlands, helping customers keep their stock holding low, reducing risk and improving cash flow.
Owen notes: “While similar window hardware products might be available elsewhere, the strength of our service truly adds value for our customers.”
Whether casement window hardware or any other kind of window hardware, Carl F Groupco continues to be an impressive partner.
CARL F GROUPCO REINFORCES COMMITMENT TO RIGOROUS OTIF MEASURES
In an industry where exceptional service is crucial, Carl F Groupco is reaffirming its commitment to stringent On Time In Full (OTIF) measures to consistently meet the needs of its customers.
While many hardware suppliers target an OTIF rate of 98%, Carl F Groupco goes further by defining and measuring this metric more rigorously.
Owen Coop, CEO at Carl F Groupco, explains: “Unlike the standard industry practice of measuring OTIF based on individual line items, we focus on the fulfilment of entire orders. This means that if any component is missing, the order doesn’t meet our high OTIF standard.”
“At Carl F Groupco, we know our success is directly tied to our customers’ success. Excellent service is our responsibility, and a strict OTIF metric is just one of the ways we make that happen.”
committed to maintaining this high level of service. Owen adds: “We understand how much our customers rely on our products. If necessary, our teams are willing to stay late to ensure orders are dispatched on time. We refuse to let our customers down.”
Owen also highlights that this rigorous OTIF standard is part of the company’s broader commitment to customer satisfaction. “At Carl F Groupco, we know our success is directly tied to our customers’ success. Excellent service is our responsibility, and a strict OTIF metric is just one of the ways we make that happen.”
The discovery last year of two new door lock attack methods that could defeat most door locks shocked the industry, prompting the BSi to publish a tough new PAS24 update. Adding the tools to test for the new attacks to the PAS24 update mirrors the change made by Sold Secure to the Diamond (SS312) standard earlier this year. While achieving the standard is significantly tougher, it keeps our standards one step ahead of the burglars.
Nick Dutton, CEO BrisantSecure, explains: “The battle with burglars never stops. When lock makers became aware of these four aggressive attack methods
last year, the bad news was that most locks would be defenceless against burglars using them. So, the BSi consulted extensively and has acted decisively. But adding these new tools makes the updated PAS24 the toughest test yet.
“Like the BSi, BrisantSecure is always looking to be one step ahead of new attack methods, which is why we’re the first to have a lock successfully tested and accredited with the new tools. The process to having sellable locks is long, and not one we’d want to start when the changes were first announced. Once you’ve thought of the innovations behind the concept, there’s the lock redesign, and IP (Intellectual Property)
checking. Then there’s the tooling production and testing to prove the new locks work before you can progress to production and shipping. Normally that would take two to three years. But because our patented ALPS technology was accredited in March, our customers can expect to see Ultion with ALPS technology rolled out very soon. Another Ultion first!” PAS 24:2022+A1:2024 became the ‘current’ standard on 30 September.
He continues: “When a customer places an order, they have a right to expect to receive the complete order the next day. The reality is, if you only send 98 out of 100 components, you’ve let the customer down. What use is 98% of tilt and turn hardware, if it means the customer is missing the vital hardware component that means a window can’t get made? If we can only fulfil 98% of an order, it fails our OTIF metric, and we don’t count it as a success.”
Carl F Groupco reports its OTIF performance daily, ensuring that the target is communicated throughout the business. Every team member, from sales to warehouse and distribution is
Carl F Groupco supplies the UK fenestration industry with an extensive range of premium quality window and door hardware components. It has distribution centres in Peterborough and Cumbernauld, and operates nationally, including to the Scottish Highlands and offshore islands. It is one of the largest independent suppliers in the sector because it is a value-added hardware partner to its customers – as its OTIF commitment shows.

DANNY WILLIAMS ‘COLD CALLING’
Each month our special correspondent Danny Williams* replies to a reader’s letter...
“I’m not particularly techie, Danny, and I keep reading and hearing about Artificial Intelligence. Is there a place for AI in our industry and, if so, how would it be employed by fabricators or installers? What’s your view Danny?” KJ, Retail Installer Cumbria
I very nearly binned your note KJ, because whilst I do like to keep abreast of the latest tech, the term ‘AI’ is banded about willy nilly these days, and surrounded by so much fluff and puff to make it difficult to pin down just what it will do for me and specifically, my business. Which of course, are pretty much the same concerns that you have.
Let me see if I can separate the chaff from the wheat: I believe that there are 5 key areas in which AI can tangibly effect what we do in the wider window and door industry KJ, some of which will not affect your day to day life, though all will have a net, positive effect on what you do. For me, each of these has potentially life changing potential by revolutionizing processes and efficiency
The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the window and door industry is poised to revolutionize multiple aspects of the manufacturing and design process. AI technologies are driving innovation through enhanced production efficiency, precision in customization, improved quality control, and smarter logistics.
1. Precision Design and Customization
AI-powered design software allows for greater accuracy in producing custom windows and doors tailored to unique architectural requirements, which of course is what the home improvement window business is based upon. Machine learning algorithms can analyse customer preferences and specifications, leading to automated design adjustments and reducing the likelihood of errors.
2. Optimized Production
In manufacturing, AI helps automate repetitive tasks such as cutting, assembling, and quality checks. Advanced AI systems can optimize material use, minimizing waste and reducing production time. AI can also streamline workflows, predict machine maintenance needs, and improve overall efficiency by identifying bottlenecks in the production line.
3. Enhanced Quality Control
AI-driven inspection systems equipped with computer vision can detect defects or inconsistencies in products
at a far more precise level than manual inspection. This ensures higher product quality, fewer returns, and enhanced customer satisfaction.
4. Supply Chain and Stock Management
AI helps optimize supply chain operations by predicting demand, managing inventory, and automating orders. This reduces material shortages or surpluses, ensuring timely deliveries and cost savings. AI’s predictive analytics can also help forecast market trends, guiding manufacturers toward proactive decisions in purchasing and production planning.
5. Sustainability and Energy Efficiency
AI can aid in designing and producing energy-efficient windows and doors, aligning with growing environmental standards. It can also help develop sustainable production processes by optimizing energy usage in factories and minimizing waste.
Incorporating AI into the window and door industry is not only enhancing current operations but also opening avenues for innovation in product development, customer service, and sustainability.
All of these elements will produce benefits for you KJ and all retail installation businesses – better products together with improved, consistent product and service quality. But for you directly KJ I believe that the potential short-term advances for your business, will be AI driven modelling and pricing that ultimately will reduce the need, for some customers entirely, to visit and cost up an installation.
Whilst there are a number of systems that offer visualisation – where a photograph of the home is uploaded and windows and doors are superimposed to show how they look –these are generally pretty poor in my opinion and seldom look authentic. The pricing platforms are more successful however.
AI is bound to advance these elements, to the point where Mr and Mrs Jones will simply upload photographs of their property, describe the windows and doors they require, with AI powered software measuring and pricing the job and with an authentic graphic of the property produced, and all within seconds. I am unaware of any of the main industry players actually going down this route as yet.
The growing concern is control of AI, or perhaps our potential inability to control it, with major concerns about AI in society centring around ethical, social, and practical
implications. These concerns include job displacement of course, though that can only help in most areas of the UK, where it remains a ball-ache to find dependable staff capable of even turning up for work on time.
Another interesting fear is that of Algorithmic Bias, within which AI systems can reflect and perpetuate biases present in the data they are trained on. This can result in unfair outcomes, especially in sensitive areas like hiring, lending, or criminal justice. And discrimination, with AI unintentionally reinforcing societal inequalities by making decisions that favour certain groups over others. Keep it well away from the Daily Mail and GB News then…
And whilst we are on the subject, we have all heard of deepfakes and disinformation. AI-generated content, like deepfakes (altered video or audio that convincingly imitates real people) and AI-driven disinformation campaigns, can only make things harder to pick through the vast amounts of information that is thrown at us daily. Added to which of course, the number of dumb-arses out there that cannot begin or be bothered to filter the bs from the genuine, will create even deeper divisions within society. Anyone using any social media platform is already bombarded with this.
Privacy and surveillance, data collection, security and malicious use, even weapons are just some of the issues that are far too complex – and perhaps serious - to discuss in a column such as this. Or by me; my technical abilities are reasonable but lie in understanding what makes a good window great and even to removing, fixing and refitting a truck gearbox. Not AI.
Nonetheless, this has been a highly interesting topic and exercise for me. In terms of what I have learned and now pass on; but also because much of this copy was generated using AI.
You don’t need to look too closely to see the joins. And that in itself makes a crucial point: that a common theme amongst the experts is that AI is always best when it integrates with human input. The AI generated content here is first rate, but the style is dry and wooden, something that to me illustrates much of what the experts are saying. However, the point of AI is that it learns, which highlights another, very worrying issue. And that is the conviction by many that it will outstrip us, and we humans may eventually be unable to control it.
* Danny Williams is managing director of Chelmsford based Pioneer Trading and has been involved with all aspects of the windows and doors industry for 30 years. His activities include manufacturing a full range of windows and doors in PVC-U and aluminium, an IGU facility, retailing and commercial contracting.
IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU...
Where were you born and live currently?
I grew up with the last of the summer wine in the Holme Valley in glorious West Yorkshire. On reflection, it seemed that most of my childhood was spent dodging the Summerwine “mystery” tour buses and tourists. As my career developed, I moved to different UK cities for periods of my life but I have returned to the country side and the wonders of the beautiful Derbyshire. Your education and the subject or activity in which you excelled?
My education was fairly normal and though I was unsure about what I really wanted to do in higher education, I studied at De Montfort University in Leicester where I gained an BSc in Marketing and Accountancy. When I started my career in marketing and went on to gain a postgraduate Diploma from the Chartered Institute of Marketing. From marketing, I naturally migrated into sales and my current role bridles both disciplines.
Your favourite sports or interests?
I’ve tried many things but rugby and kayaking are by far my favourites. Beyond that exploring the great outdoors, enjoying the fresh air and tranquillity is also a keen pastime. Where I live in the Peak District is perfect for hillwalking and trekking.
Your biggest regret in life?
Not having travelled the world extensively, however my son seems to be making up for me today.
The temptation you can’t resist...?
Real ale, not those fancy lager drinks, that or a fine burgundy red wine, a good Pinot or Malbec.
Someone or something that inspires you.
When I was younger, Daley Thompson was an Olympic Gold Medallist and being a decathlete, he was so inspiring and young people back then were always trying to emulate him.
Today, in my professional life, I have always been inspired by innovators and their innovations.
That’s why I enjoy working for Glazpart, our research and innovation team who bring

products like our award-winning Link Vent to market, is a great and very inspiring process to be involved in. Even more rewarding in the case of the Link Vent because it makes people’s homes healthier and improves wellbeing.
YOUR CAREER...
When and how did you join this industry?
I flirted with the fenestration market in the early nineties, left and worked in many other markets but was eventually enticed back when I was offered the role at Glazpart in 2012. The opportunity to take on a great business with a strong reputation and grow it beyond its expectations and take it to a different level was too good to resist.
What is your job?
If someone could accurately define it that would be great. Every day is so different and challenging. My role is to lead the business and all its customer facing activity to maximum effect. However, this involves a lot of research and reading up on policy, legislation and market trends to try to sharply follow where the
markets are leading us. From the research, then comes the planning and management processes across all sales and marketing, to ultimately make sure our customers get the products and solutions they need to grow their businesses.
Your greatest achievement?
Professionally, it’s the growth of Glazpart over the last 14 years, I have been instrumental in tripling the size of the business and built a great team to fully support our customers. The success of Glazpart has also been reflected recently as we have gained industry recognition with numerous awards nominations and both the Link Vent and our Glazpartners customer support initiative have won awards in the last 18 months. It’s simultaneously rewarding and humbling.
On a personal basis, my greatest achievement is my son. He’s now
21 and galivanting across the world, on his own. The latest texts from North Africa tell me that he’s enjoying every second in the great outdoors, certainly a chip off the old block.
AND YOUR FUTURE…
What would you do if you weren’t in this industry?
Living in Cumbria and being outdoors as much as the UK weather allows.
A particular ambition?
Walking the Pennine way. Or if I was to win the lottery then I’d like to travel the world in style and of course enjoying the great outdoors. I would someday like to do the North Coast (NC) 500 and enjoy the ultimate road trip enjoying the full 500 miles of the rugged North Scottish coastline.
How would you want to be remembered?
Firstly, I’d like to be remembered. It would be nice to be remembered as someone who made a difference through trying to do my best and for getting more things right than wrong. I’d also like to be remembered for leading and nurturing a team of professionals to do even better than me in the future.

STELLAR PROVES ITS VERSATILITY IN DESIGNER-INSPIRED NEW BUILD PROJECT
Stellar Aluminium windows and doors have been used to great effect by GD Windows in a contemporary architectdesigned new build property in Pembrokeshire.
Set in a rural location close to Poppit Sands beach, the plot offered far-reaching views of the tidal estuary which was integral to its aesthetic appeal. As such, the new build property needed to be built to exacting design standards that would make the most of the extraordinary location.
GD Windows was appointed as the window and door contractor for the build and the Stellar Aluminium system was specified throughout to meet the project’s requirements.
Gwyn Davies, Director at GD Windows, said: “We were delighted to secure this project, which gave us an exciting opportunity to demonstrate the full potential of Stellar Aluminium in a high-end build.”
One highlight of the detached property is an inverted bay window, which featured a door in its centre creating a striking architectural element. In the kitchen, a 1.8m x 1.2m Stellar Lift & Slide Door was repurposed as a window to blend functionality with style.
Gwyn commented: “Stellar’s adaptability allowed the architect to deliver their vision for the property. The inverted bay adds significant visual interest, while the innovative kitchen window design maximises the view.”
Elsewhere, the project involved six Fully Flush Residential Doors, three Flush Tilt & Turn Windows, five Fully Flush Windows and a distinctive triangle-shaped fixed pane window.
All products were triple glazed to maximise the property’s thermal efficiency, ensuring comfort and sustainability in the home.
The specification was completed with a striking colourway of Agate Grey on the internal frames to deliver understated elegance and RAL 6033 mint turquoise on the exterior to echo the vibrant hues of the estuary.
Nev Gleed, Technical Development Manager (aluminium) at Epwin Window Systems, said: “Stellar’s flexibility and premium finish made it the perfect choice for this remarkable new build project. Its marine-grade paint finish is ideally suited for an exposed location like this, delivering both longlasting durability and exceptional aesthetic appeal.”
GD Windows, based in Aberporth, Ceredigion, has over 30 years of experience in the industry and is a long-standing fabricator of Stellar Aluminium in Wales. The company takes pride in working with designers, architects and builders to create bespoke solutions for new builds and property renovations.
Gwyn concluded: “Stellar was the ideal system for this stunning project. Its versatility and high-end finish complement the property beautifully, while the slim sightlines make the most of the breathtaking views available. It’s been a superb project to work on.”

GARDEN OF EDEN COMPLETES ITS SHEERLINE RANGE WITH NEW INDEX BI-FOLD
Swindon-based Garden of Eden, one of Sheerline’s original fabricator launch partners, has added the new Index Bi-fold to its range, which means the company now carries every Sheerline window and door product available.
The purpose of this is twofold; to increase customer choice and ensure the business maintains its competitive edge. Since carrying the innovative aluminium range, Garden of Eden has achieved steady business growth, with aluminium now accounting for almost half of all sales.
Garden of Eden took the strategic decision to start fabricating and selling Sheerline’s products as soon as they were available. They had previously adopted other window and door systems developed by Sheerline’s founder, Roger Hartshorn.
Based on this experience, Martin, Terry, and Helen Henly, Directors, felt the new Sheerline range would be forward-thinking, offer exceptional performance, and look fantastic. During the partnership, this has been proven alongside other advantages that make business sense.
For example, Sheerline’s products and systems are more streamlined when compared to alternative products. This is because the same beads and gaskets are used across the range, so there is less stock holding, with many interchangeable parts.
Martin commented: “When we deal with Sheerline, there’s a real family feel and personal service. We aren’t simply a number. I know that if I need to speak to someone I can, so things get sorted out if you’ve got a problem or need a hand
with something. If you urgently need something you’ve forgotten to order, they’ll do what they can.”
“But it’s not just the service. When we speak to customers about Sheerline, there are three key things we tell them. First, the low U-values and the fact we can prove these values with evidence – not all companies can do this, second, we explain the quality behind the products as we make them in-house, and third, we explain everything is British made and the aluminium is UKsourced too,” he added.
Tony Basile, Sheerline’s National Sales Director, said: “Martin and the team have been with us since day one, which makes the growth they’ve achieved even more fantastic. They’re a huge champion of ours and we’re proud to support them in any way we can. We look
UAP EXPANDS 5 ROLLER LOCK & FLIP HINGE INTO THE UK MARKET
UAP Ltd has announced the introduction of its innovative 5 Roller 35mm Backset Multipoint Door Lock to the UK market.
UAP Ltd is a leading manufacturer of high-security multipoint locking systems for PVCu, composite, timber, steel, and aluminium doors.
forward to many more years working together,” he added. Garden of Eden has recently moved to new premises and is in the process of setting up its showroom. Homeowners and installers can contact the team directly on 01793 530 808 to make an appointment to view the products available. To find out more about becoming a Sheerline fabricator partner, visit the website here: www.sheerline.com or contact Sheerline on 01332 978 000.
The new lock offers several key features: it is equipped with a fifth roller below the centre, allowing for easier door compression and adjustment. The door frame’s one piece keep suits all door profiles by using a profile related packer system. The frame keep can also be adjusted using only an Allen key, simplifying both fabrication and installation.
The lock’s central hook mechanism replaces the traditional deadbolt, offering stronger resistance to forceful entry. Two antilift pins further secure the door by preventing it from being lifted when locked. Its top and bottom hooks move in opposite directions, ensuring one remains locked if the other is compromised.
Following its success in Ireland, UAP is now expanding its 5 Roller 35mm Backset Multipoint Door Lock across the UK.
Boasting up to thirteen locking points, compared to six or eight in typical locks, the 5 Roller Lock provides unmatched security for 99% of doors, making it the market leader in adaptable locking systems.
Gareth Davies, Area Sales Manager for the South West, Midlands, and Ireland at UAP Ltd, said:
“The expanded rollout of this lock is just one example of our commitment to product innovation. Where other companies are happy to follow the status quo and continue using the same lock structures, we’re always working to make our door locks as secure as they can possibly be. Building on our success in Ireland, we’re excited to help make UK homes and businesses safer with our advanced security solutions.”

SENIOR PROVIDES PITCH-PERFECT FENESTRATION PACKAGE FOR RANGERS FC
Aluminium commercial doors and curtain walling from Senior Architectural Systems have been specified for the stunning new museum and event space for Rangers Football Club located on the Ibrox Stadium campus in Glasgow.
Known as Edmiston House, the new two-storey building has been designed by Keppie Design and takes inspiration from the area’s rich shipbuilding and industrial heritage. The building feature the use of Senior’s SF62 aluminium curtain wall system and thermally-efficient PURe® aluminium doors, all fabricated and installed by specialist contractor Marshall Brown. The aluminium frames are powder coated in a matt black finish so that the doors and curtain wall system create a seamless façade, with Senior’s thermallyefficient PURe® FOLD bi-folding doors installed to the firstfloor terrace alongside a PURe® Commercial Door.
The entrance to the building is via Record UK’s FTA20 automatic bi-folding door system, which is a supply chain partner that Senior has worked with on several projects. Another key feature of the building’s design is an industrial sliding door that blends into the façade when not in use but which can be fully opened to create a sheltered fan zone area on match days.
To add further interest to the building’s façade, Senior’s SF62’s curtain wall system was designed with 40mm deep H shaped face caps. The system offers slim lines but features a wider 62mm box which can accommodate greater structural movement. The increased rebate size of Senior’s SF62 system means that it is possible to provide either additional clearance between the section and infill, so that the system is able to allow the glass to move more, or greater edge cover
for issues such as guarding. Benefitting from the inherent strength of its aluminium frame, the new SF62 curtain wall system can also support transom loads of up to 750kg and achieve longer glazing spans without the need for additional supporting steel to be used.
Part of Senior’s patented and award-winning PURe® range of aluminium windows and doors, the PURe® FOLD door
features an innovative thermal barrier manufactured from expanded polyurethane (PUR) foam, which is most often found in insulation products. When calculated as a CEN standard commercial door, the PURe® FOLD aluminium door can achieve U-values as low as 0.88 W/m2K.

“SWITCHING TO SHEERLINE? IT’S ONE OF THE BEST DECISIONS I’VE EVER MADE” – WINDOWISE
Founded in 1997, Windowise (Phoenix Windows) has been fabricating aluminium products alongside PVCu systems since it launched. However, earlier this year, the company made the decision to switch to Sheerline after receiving “horrendous” service from their previous supplier.
The company chose Sheerline over other systems houses for several reasons. The quality of the materials supplied, and the innovative products played a role, but so did the highquality personal service that was promised and has consistently been delivered.
This was especially important to the Windowise team. With their previous supplier, there was minimal in-person contact with their sales rep and no support on a day-to-day basis, which is where Sheerline differentiates itself from its competitors.
For instance, there’s a dedicated technical team who provide day-to-day support, training provided as standard for new products, and regular calls and in-person meetings with sales reps and other Sheerline team members.
The other key difference in this scenario is Sheerline’s ability to deliver the promises it makes. This extends beyond innovative products and delivery lead times to technical product information, such as U-values.
Sheerline prides itself on offering transparency around its products and their capabilities. For instance, the company’s independently verified U-value reports for their whole product range are freely available – giving customers absolute confidence that what they sell complies.
Andy McCord, Windowise Managing Director, said: “I think everyone knows, you don’t swap suppliers for no reason – it’s a big undertaking to switch. But the constant false promises and letting me down meant I was letting my customers down. It was the service and delivery – it was horrendous, and there was no sign of it getting better. So, I took the plunge and swapped suppliers.”
“With Sheerline, it’s the complete opposite – it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made,” he added.
As the company has found a trusted aluminium partner they can rely on, they’re focusing on realising their ambitious growth plans. This includes fabricating and installing new Sheerline products as and when they are launched.
Martin Hepburn, Area Sales Manager for the West Midlands, South Wales and Southwest, commented: “When we first talked to Andy and the team, it was clear they were having real issues with their previous supplier – the kind of issues that Sheerline was launched to address.”
“For us, it’s not just about innovative products, but top-quality service, training, and support to show customers there’s another option to the one offered by legacy systems houses,” he added.
To find out more about joining Sheerline, call the team directly on 01332 978 000, emailing: info@sheerline.com, or visit the website www.sheerline.com to view the full product range.

FENTRADE’S TRAINING PROGRAMME SECURES FUTURE TALENT
Trade fabricator Fentrade
is highlighting its internal training programme, noting the multiple benefits it is bringing to the business and its customers.
Chris Reeks, Fentrade’s Managing Director, said: “The industry-wide shortage of skilled labour is a well-known challenge. Here at Fentrade we’re taking steps to address this shortage. At the same time, it’s helping us boost the quality of our output, attract new talent and ensuring we retain skilled team members. The programme is delivering impressive results.”
The 12-month training programme pairs new trainees with an experienced Fentrade fabricator in a buddy system that offers hands-on learning. The programme covers all aspects of aluminium fabrication, starting with fixed frames before moving on to more complex products such as sash manufacture and bifold doors. At each stage, the trainee only progresses
after demonstrating full comprehension, ensuring a thorough understanding of the fabrication processes involved.
To date, four members of the Fentrade team have completed the programme. All four
had no prior experience in the fenestration industry and have remained with the company, showcasing the programme’s ability to attract and retain talent. Chris said: “We customise the training to fit each individual’s background. For example,
one member of our team came from an aluminium ladder manufacturing background, which meant they already understood some fundamentals of tooling and technical planning, allowing us to focus on other areas.”
As Chris says, the dedicated programme brings several benefits. It is valuable for attracting talent keen to enter a dynamic industry. It is also valuable for retaining experienced members of staff by demonstrating the value their skills bring to the business.
Fentrade’s customers benefit too. Chris commented: “Because we train our staff to our exacting quality standards, this is reflected in the quality of our output, and the value we can deliver to our customers. We’re delighted with the impact it has.”
Fentrade is a leading specialist aluminium fabricator delivering fenestration solutions for all market sectors. It focuses on delivering quality in every area, as its bespoke training programme demonstrates. It’s an approach that gives its customers the products and service they need to gain a competitive edge.
STELLAR ALUMINIUM SELECTED FOR ECO HOLIDAY PROPERTY IN ABERYSTWYTH
Stellar Aluminium was the preferred window system of choice for a new ecofriendly holiday property in Aberystwyth.
Manufactured and installed by GD Windows, Gwyn Davies, Director at the company said: “The property owners wanted a window and door system with strong eco credentials and excellent thermal efficiency. They also wanted slim sightlines to make the most of the site’s stunning views. Stellar Aluminium was the perfect choice.”
Across the project, GD Windows installed 24 Stellar Aluminium Flush Casement Windows, two fixed pane windows, one shaped window, one three-pane Slimline Bifold Door, one set of French Doors and four Stellar Residential Doors. All products
were finished in Anthracite Grey for a sleek contemporary appearance.
To further boost the eco credentials of the detached five-bedroom holiday home, a ground source heat pump provides heating and hot water into the property and an electric vehicle charging point has also been installed.
Phil Parry, Technical Director at Epwin Window Systems, said: “Stellar Aluminium has excellent credentials for eco-focused projects like these. Its unique design doesn’t use rebate adaptors and allows the option to remove dummy sashes. This not only enhances the thermal efficiency but also allows for slimmer, more streamlined sightlines which were important on this project.”
Based in Aberporth, Ceredigion, GD Windows has over 30 years of experience in delivering high-quality solutions for both residential and commercial projects. The team is dedicated to working closely with each customer to develop tailored designs that meet their specific needs. By manufacturing and installing products to the highest standards, GD Windows ensures that every installation exceeds expectations, providing lasting value and durability that stands the test of time.
As a committed Stellar fabricator, GD Windows is leveraging the system’s benefits to provide significant value to its customers.
Gwyn concluded: “Stellar’s impressive credentials are a major asset to our business,
PATENT APPROVAL FOR STELLAR SLIMLINE BIFOLD DOOR ADDS TO ITS CREDENTIALS
Epwin Window Systems has received full patent approval for the adjustable locking stile on its Stellar Aluminium Slimline Bifold Door. This patented design further strengthens the door’s position in the market extending the unique benefits it brings fabricators and installers.
The patented adjustable slimline locking stile enhances the door’s aesthetics. At the same time, its fine-tune adjustment between the lock and the keep assists with the setting of the door during manufacturing and installation. It also eliminates the need for adjustable door jambs that complicate installation and affect thermal performance.
Neville Gleed, Technical Development Manager at Epwin Window Systems, said: “Securing full patent approval for the adjustable locking stile is another significant milestone
for Stellar. This achievement reinforces our ongoing commitment to delivering advanced design solutions that give our customers a competitive advantage in a crowded market.”
The adjustable locking stile is one of a number of benefits that set the Stellar Slimline Bifold Door apart and deliver an impressive level of thermal efficiency and aesthetic appeal. It results in a bifold door that meets and exceeds the demands of modern building standards and customer expectations.
The Stellar Slimline Bifold Door meets the requirements of the 2022 Part L Building Regulations, achieving a U-value of 1.4W/ m²K with 28mm double glazing and 1.0W/ m²K with 44mm triple glazing.
This is achieved through features including innovative thermal break technology that has low thermal conductivity, which ensures
exceptional insulation. It also benefits from tailed glazing gaskets and an under-glass seal which breaks up the cavities behind and under the glass to further enhance its thermal performance.
Aesthetically, the slimline locking stile puts all the focus on the view. And the knock-in glazing beads are easier to install and give a cleaner finish, further enhancing the door’s visual appeal.
Like all Stellar products, the bifold door is available in a wide range of Qualicoatapproved standard and non-standard RAL colours. The product is backed by a 25-year marine-grade surface paint finish guarantee for installations located within 5km of the coastline, and a 10-year guarantee for locations between 50 metres and 5km from the coast.
as they add considerable value to our customers’ projects. It allows us to offer a product that meets the highest standards of energy efficiency and sustainability while providing the sleek, modern look that discerning homeowners demand. A STELLAR VIEW ENHANCES PEMBROKESHIRE NEW BUILD PROPERTY
Stellar flush windows and doors from Epwin Window Systems have been installed in a striking contemporary new build project in the scenic Pilot Street area of St. Dogmaels near Cardigan in Pembrokeshire. The bespoke split-level residential property has been designed to fully capitalise on its prime coastal location.
The products were manufactured and installed by GD Windows and Gwyn Davies, Director, said: “The architectural vision for this home was to maximise the natural light and make the most of its unique coastal position. The Stellar aluminium system, with its slim sightlines, played a crucial role in achieving this. Its super-slim profile enabled us to open-up the rear aspect of the property across both levels, allowing light to flood the living spaces and provide uninterrupted views of the estuary. The result is a contemporary, light-filled home that truly connects with its surroundings.”
A standout feature of the detached build was the installation of three large Stellar lift and slide patio doors, each measuring 3.3m x 2.5m, complemented by overhead curtain walling with fixed lights across the upper rear elevation. A further three Stellar
lift and slide doors, each 2.5m x 2.1m, were installed to the ground floor level.
Elsewhere in the build, three internal screens with duplex bars were fitted, alongside four flush Stellar windows that provide a clean, minimalist aesthetic.
To complement the home’s contemporary stye, all Stellar products were manufactured with anthracite grey external frames and a clean white finish on the interior. As is standard with Stellar, the finish used a durable powder coating with a marine-grade finish that meets the Qualicoat specification, helping to ensure longevity and resilience in the challenging coastal environment.
Neville Gleed, Technical Development Manager at Epwin Window Systems, said: “The flush aesthetics and ultra-slim frames of Stellar are proving increasingly popular
in premium projects like this. Architects and developers value the system’s sleek, modern design, which allows for larger expanses of glass without compromising on strength or performance. This has been a significant advantage for companies like GD Windows, enabling them to offer a cutting-edge product that aligns with the demands of contemporary architecture. As a result, they’re able to capitalise on a wide variety of projects where design, light and performance are key considerations.”
This project exemplifies how Stellar is fast becoming the go-to aluminium system for high-end, modern properties delivering the perfect balance of aesthetics, performance and functionality.

WOMEN IN INDUSTRY
AT WORK, REST AND PLAY
Sioned Yates, Access Marketing
AT WORK...
How did you get into this industry?
My first experience of windows and doors was when I worked in the marketing department at REHAU. Ironically, I was Communications Manager for all the REHAU products except windows and doors, but that didn’t stop me from getting very involved with them – especially when it came to good old Glassex!
What was your first job after leaving school or college?
I was a 16 year old apprentice at REHAU’s factory in Amlwch. I had to learn all the key functions in the business from purchasing and production planning to quality management and dispatch, so that when anyone was off either sick or on holiday, I could take up the role and ensure the business didn’t suffer from any downtime. It was invaluable work – and life experience!
Can you give a brief resume of jobs up to your current position?
After REHAU, I worked at Lafarge Plasterboard as Trade Marketing and then Communications Manager – launching
their highly successful GTEC commercial brand, and then I joined Brandon Tool Hire as Group Marketing Manager getting some really great consumer marketing experience.
From there I moved to AluK as Head of Marketing and then Marketing Director where we did some brilliant work establishing AluK as a leading brand in aluminium. And after 6 years, I switched to Whitesales as Marketing Director and, again, launched a relatively unknown brand into fenestration.
I had always wanted to set up my own company though, and I launched Access Marketing in August to help businesses in an industry that I adore structure, shape and drive their marketing and ultimately increase sales and grow their brand. I’m working with some great companies already and cannot wait to develop and grow further.
Do you believe that your speciality(finance, Sales, Management, Marketing etc) is transferrable to any industry?
Absolutely, marketing is one of the great transferrable skills. Once you understand and know the principles, learn from experience you can transfer it to many other industries.
This series in Glass News highlights the hopes and aspirations of women in the windows, doors, glass, roofs and hardware industry and will hopefully inspire more to make this their career.
AT PLAY...
All work and no play makes Jill a dull girl True? Or False?
Absolutely! I lost my mum to skin cancer in 2013, she had retired at 65 in Jan 2013, was diagnosed in July and passed away in the Dec. This has never left me and has made me want to enjoy life as best as possible. But we all need to be realistic too, that we need to earn money to live life!
Do you achieve the work /life balance you would like to?
Having just set up Access Marketing, it’s all hands to the pump at the moment and I’m working all the hours to establish myself and grow the business. Part of the reason for setting up on my own though is to achieve a better work/life balance so I’m hoping that will come!
Have you a career path mapped out or is it more about opportunism?
I think over the years it has shifted. I have always strived to succeed by doing a great job. To know that I have earnt every penny of my salary that month. I’m extremely passionate at whatever role I do and throw everything into it. Now as a new business owner, I obviously have a plan, but it will also be about seeking opportunities where possible to help drive the success of it.
Looking ahead, where would you like to be in 5 years and 10 years’ time?
Right now, I’m so very much enjoying my new business, and working with great people to help them with the marketing and sales needs. I’d like to hope that I’m still in the game in 5 years, maybe the children might want to join me. I know there is marketing flair in the family!
In 10 years! Please….I’d love to retire!
With money and leisure time no object, what would you really like to for yourself or your family?
That is a good question! We have a small paddock where we live, and I would LOVE to set up a couple of glamping pods! I absolutely love to host, and I always strive to try and give everyone who visits a wonderful, enjoyable and relaxing time in our home.
AT REST...
Away from work what is your focus?
As a family of 6, it’s a busy household when we are all together – and I love it. We’ve just finished a big house renovation and can at last start to enjoy it. I love nothing more than cooking up a Sunday lunch for the family, while listening to music and glass of wine in hand!
What activities help you switch off?
We have 3 German Pointers, and they are my babies! I absolutely love taking the time out each day to walk them in the fields where we live. And yes! I do feel the same way (well almost!) even when it’s pouring down / cold or windy. They need their exercise, and I need time out…
THIS MONTH:
KOMBIMATEC OPEN DAYS SHOWCASE CUTTING-EDGE CNC MACHINERY FOR ALUMINIUM AND PVC FABRICATION
Kombimatec, Leighton Buzzard, a leading UK manufacturer of machinery for the window, door, and curtain walling industries, is pleased to announce the success of its recent open days event 17th-19th September, which attracted a wide range of industry professionals eager to see the latest innovations in aluminium and PVC profile fabrication.
The open days featured live demonstrations of Kombimatec's advanced machinery, giving visitors the opportunity to experience first-hand how these systems are transforming the manufacturing process. The event was designed to cater to both
aluminium and PVC fabricators, with tailored demonstrations for each material type.
For aluminium-focused attendees, the spotlight was on the DGS530 Electronic Double Mitre Saw. Visitors saw how aluminium profiles were cut with precision, while a self-adhesive label, containing a barcode for profile identification, was automatically printed during the cutting cycle. This barcode is essential for tracking the profile throughout the production process and feeding data into subsequent machines. The seamless workflow continued with the AMC328 Machining Centre, where a Datalogic scanner was used to scan the barcode. This immediately identified the part, activating a 3D simulator that allowed operators to verify the routing details for the specific piece. Once confirmed, the operator loaded the profile into the AMC328, and the machining cycle ran smoothly.
For PVC-focused visitors, Kombimatec demonstrated the fabrication of the innovative Mech/Part Weld Joint. Profiles were first cut with mitre and straight end preparations before being fed into
APEX DOUBLE GLAZING ENHANCES PRODUCTION WITH NEW MACHINERY INVESTMENTS
Apex Double Glazing, a specialist supplier of uPVC and aluminium windows, doors, composite doors, porches, conservatories, and more, has recently expanded its production capabilities with new equipment delivered by Kombimatec to its London facility.
With a goal to boost production efficiency, Apex Double Glazing has invested in two perfect machines: the 4HDV/140 Four Combination Head Welder for welding
uPVC window and door profiles, and the EV443 CNC Automatic Corner Cleaner for precision cleaning of these profiles postwelding.
The 4HDV/140 is designed to handle corner, transom, and cruciform joints with precision. Its small transom drop is perfect for the UK window market, while its tight weld bead feature is ideal for modern foiled profile designs. Built with a durable steel frame, the machine is equipped with an overhead heater plate, two-hand safety control, a Mitsubishi controller, and dropdown support arms. Its large capacity accommodates profile widths of up to 150mm and heights of 140mm.
The EV443 CNC Automatic Corner Cleaner features two grooving knives and a milling blade controlled by 2-axis servo drives. It supports multiple CNC programs, with
a CNC routing machine. These profiles were then welded using the 2HD/MW Welder, resulting in high-quality joints that simulate the appearance of traditional wooden windows, while leveraging the cost-efficiency and durability of PVC.
This new welding technique impressed attendees, highlighting how fabricators can achieve a premium aesthetic with minimal effort, making it an attractive option for manufacturers looking to offer high-end solutions at a competitive price point.
“We were delighted with the success of our open days,” said David Parsons, Director at Kombimatec. “The live demonstrations of both the aluminium and PVC processes allowed our visitors to see how our machinery integrates cutting, tracking, and machining into an efficient production flow. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with many attendees impressed by the precision and versatility of our systems.”
Throughout the event, Kombimatec’s expert team was on hand to answer questions, provide insights into the latest industry trends, and discuss how manufacturers can implement these technologies into their
production lines to improve efficiency and product quality.
The open days not only showcased Kombimatec’s dedication to innovation but also served as a valuable platform for networking and knowledge exchange among industry professionals.
With the success of this event, Kombimatec plans to host similar open days in the future, offering more opportunities for manufacturers to see first-hand how the company’s CNC machinery can meet their production needs.
axis movements on linear guides driven by re-circulating ball screws for enhanced precision. Its user-friendly touchscreen display enables quick program selection and machine setup, and it is complemented by a robust support frame.
Commenting on the partnership, Mr. Singh from Apex Double Glazing said, “Meeting David from Kombimatec was a game changer. The pricing was competitive, and the delivery was on time. The machines
arrived by noon, and by 4 PM we had production running smoothly. By 5 PM, everything was fully operational!” He added, “The entire process was seamless, and we are already looking forward to receiving our next Double Mitre Saw.”
This latest investment demonstrates Apex Double Glazing’s commitment to innovation and efficiency, ensuring they continue to deliver high-quality products to their customers.

BACK BRITAIN!
Now more than ever we need to be championing British manufacturing, claims Jade Engineering’s founders Adam Jones and Sean Mackey. Proud of their commitment to quality, brilliance and individual service, the company is poised to enter its next stage of growth, and believes that there is a real hunger to feel a solid reliance beneath the industry’s feet.
While the summer’s general election should have heralded in a more stable period of time when we can all finally knuckle down and really focus on building our economy, the reality is that we seem to have gone from crisis to crisis. The nefarious antics of our own government notwithstanding, events in the middle east and the (at time of writing) hysteria of the American elections continue to add the element of unpredictability to a global economy.
25 years ago, everything was about the Tiger economy – the hunger for sourcing cheaper products manufactured in regions such as China and south east Asia fed into a burgeoning home improvement economy
and helped to keep prices supressed for a while. However, the initial ‘fiesta’ of like for like products hitting the market at bargain basement prices is still reeling from the impact of global events affecting the price of a 6” screw.
Over that time, Jade has been quietly getting on with focusing on giving the real, tangible support to manufacturers – the sort of support that has a solidity to it, that comes within normal working hours, that speaks a common language and leaves little room for confusion or misunderstanding. In short, Jade has always been laser focused on being
brilliant engineers, and the fact that we are British is the icing on the cake.
Over the years, we have seen and heard the problems which have come with sourcing products from overseas. Despite the heady honeymoon of cheaper prices and increased profit margins, the reality of the commitment soon sets in. Problems relating to consistency of quality, intellectual property, and currency fluctuations will all make themselves known. Not to mention the environmental impact of transporting goods halfway across the globe, and the ethical concerns around labour practices.
Of course, should another container ship ever get stuck in the Suez Canal, or diversions needed to avoid the Yemeni coastline that could always add waiting time and money onto the bill.
So here’s a reminder of why backing British manufacturing is a policy we should all follow.
Quality and reputation: the one reason why Jade has succeeded over the years is that we have built a solid reputation for high standards and excellent craftsmanship. We probably know your business better than you do. Often our customers have manufacturing problems that they don’t even know how to articulate yet. We help to put that problem into words, and then find a solution for it.
Supporting the local economy: drive along Bayton Road Industrial Estate here in Coventry and it’s like a slalom course made up of cars, vans and lorries going about their business. To see it is good for the soul, and we are very happy to be adding to the general busyness and congestion knowing that we are contributing to the local economy. Like everyone in the industry, we struggle to find good engineers and are actively working with local educational establishments to ensure that we can help develop the local job market. Moving any manufacturing away from the UK will mean that we lose that impetus to educate and train the next generation into the industry, and we fully support every endeavour to bring more skills into the sector.
Sustainability and self sufficiency: risk mitigation in your supply chain will, overall, strengthen your own product offering to your client base. It stands to reason that if your products have a journey of several thousand miles, your exposure to risk increases. If they are being shipped out from that place just off the M6, then that exposure lessens considerably. Not to mention the reduction in carbon emissions, which is something this government should be happy about at least!! Maybe they should be giving us British manufacturers some healthy tax breaks!
While we will never deny the importance of following global developments in innovation and technology – we always keep a good eye on what other countries are doing across our particular sector – we believe that maintaining a tight control over our own particular output will always provide the greatest benefits to the UK manufacturing base. What might seem more expensive will, in a short time, always prove to be more cost efficient. Which is why you will shortly read about the opening our new 30,000 sq ft facilities, but you will never hear about us setting up a division on the other side of the world.
