Maleny joins nationwide vigils
Local refugee advocacy and support group Welcome to Maleny will host a candlelight vigil this Friday, July 19 at 5.30pm to commemorate the six-year anniversary of the start of offshore processing in Australia. People are invited to light a candle in honour of lives lost in detention and in support of those still suffering on Manus and Nauru. Together vigil participants will hold a light in the dark for those still languishing in terrible conditions and for the persecuted and displaced who need to be brought urgently to safety. Please bring your own candle. For further information please contact Lisa on 0448 319 391.
Where’s the cheese?
Maleny Cheese hosted an informal but very cheesy celebration at its newly reopened café last Friday morning to mark 120 years of diary being a Sunshine Coast industry. Local buffalo farmer Margaret Thompson, whose family has had dairy farms for over a century, was asked to do the honours of cutting the birthday cheesecake. The event brought together past and current local dairy farmers who supply Maleny Cheese with milk.
New water meters for Landsborough and Mount Mellum
As part of Unitywater’s annual infrastructure maintenance program, it will be identifying and replacing water meters nearing the end of their life in Landsborough and Mount Mellum. Affected residents will receive a notification card in their letterbox at least 48 hours before works are carried out and, if they are home on the day of the work, Unitywater’s authorised contractor will make contact with them before replacing the meter. Following meter replacement the contractor will leave a ‘works completed’ card in the resident’s letterbox, which records the water consumption measured by the old meter. Customers are advised to keep this reading for reference and to cross check when they receive their next Unitywater account. This work is part of Unitywater’s commitment to maintaining infrastructure and providing a reliable and safe water supply for the community. For more details visit www.unitywater.com/maintenance-programs or phone the Unitywater’s customer contact centre on 1300 086 489.
