Local participation in Climate Strike Contributed by Jenny Fitzgibbon The Sunshine Coast Global Climate Strike held at Cotton Tree last Friday was attended by 3,000 marchers protesting to demand climate justice for the younger generation. The Maleny turnout for the event was fantastic with about 40 people setting off Departing Maleny by bus and car-share from Maple Street, and many more Maleny people making their own way there to join the event. The Maple Street Co-op also closed for a while as a show of support for climate action and Shotgun Expresso provided a free coffee to those going down for the rally.

A development application to build a new quarry at Landsborough on a parcel of land known as Alf’s Hill (or Alf’s Mountain), between Hapgood Road and the Bruce Highway, was made to Sunshine Coast Council in 2017. Surrounded by state forest and national park, the 64 hectare parcel of land is owned by civil construction company Shadforth Industries and is currently zoned as rural. The planned haulage route, taking around 100 trucks a day, would traverse some internal forestry roads, onto Hapgood Road, then via Forestry Road and Dianella Road to join the Bruce Highway at the new Bells Creek interchange. In May last year, the council refused the application

on a number of grounds including impacts to vegetation, fauna, hydrology and visual amenity. Council also considered that as the area was flagged as a ‘further investigation area’ (where the proposed Beerwah East urban expansion would occur) it was an incompatible land use under the planning scheme. Not happy with this decision, Shadforth started a legal battle with council in the Planning and Environment Court to have the council decision overturned. In an unexplained move, the lawyers for Shadforth recently discontinued the proceedings and abandoned plans to establish the quarry. Shadforth Industries was contacted for comment.

True story and a great show ‘A Girl’s Guide to World War’ is back by popular demand with a season at The Events Centre, Caloundra on Friday, October 11 and Saturday, October 12. The musical played to sell-out crowds in 2018 at the Old Ambulance Station in Nambour. The show tells a remarkable true story from World War I when a handful of eccentric, courageous Australian women tried to join the army. Rejected because of their sex, the women refuse to “stay home and sit still”. Instead, they go to war. With rollicking humour and unforgettable music, this musical had audiences standing and cheering in 2018. The creators of the show are Maleny locals

and partners Katy Forde and Aleathea Monsour, who are bringing the show to Maleny after the Caloundra season. They then plan to take it on a regional tour. Tickets are available at theeventscentre.com.au/ product/a-girls-guide-to-world-war or call The Events Centre on 5491 4240.

The week for celebrating our op shops By Sonia Clark National Op Shop Week runs from MondaySunday, September 30-October 6, so why not pop in to one of our local charity operators and discover a whole new world of exciting bargains and seriously cool treasures. If the thrill of unique discoveries, bargain clothing and household items is not your thing, you can still support your local op shop by either donating pre-loved or downsized items, or volunteer your time. Op shop purchases help fund local community and care initiatives, as well as providing viable options for a more sustainable environmental impact. Nicole Croft, store manager at Bloomhill Cancer Care Op Shop in Beerwah, said that with an increasing focus on both local and global environmental issues, op shopping can offer a number of great sustainable benefits. Op shops also offer fantastic opportunities for volunteers to be part of a larger network of likeminded people. “We love our team of volunteers, and customers who shop with us are also supporting services that help local people right here on the Coast,” Nicole said. “Op shopping focusses on recycling and re-using, which is so important when you look at the world’s environmental issues today.” The Beerwah store has recently joined the ReturnIt scheme, with a recycling container that allows customers to drop off their used eligible drink

containers and have the money put directly into their account. For each item recycled, Bloomhill charities receive a small donation. Nicole said customers can also drop off unwanted electrical cord and the store will also recycle batteries. Op shopping allows people to find distinctive costeffective clothing. There is no need to follow the pack when you are op shopping for clothes and the rewards of finding a unique or ridiculously inexpensive designer bargain keep savvy shoppers coming back for more. “You can really express yourself uniquely – buying recycled clothing and one-off clothing allows people to dress how they love to look,” Nicole said. Anita Verwayen, centre coordinator of the Mooloolah Community Centre, said that the long running Mooloolah Op Shop offered some of the cheapest priced items on the Coast. “The op shop relies on the generosity of the local community and the profits are then reinvested into community support programs and wider rural relief packages,” Anita said. “Our volunteers do an incredible job and our prices stay reasonable as there are no expenses such as rent to cover. “Our local community is just incredible with its support of our shop. Most weeks we end up donating 40 bags to Lifeline at Kunda Park of items we just can’t fit into our shop,” she said. “Giving clothes is a great way to help the community,” says Jon Dee, managing director of DoSomethingNearYou and founder of National

Glass half full – half marathon local challenge By Sonia Clark Glass House Mountains local Rohan Briggs has set himself a unique charity challenge to run up and down Mount Ngungun ten times in five hours to help raise funds and awareness for GPAI – Golf Programs Australia Inc – on Sunday, October 6. An umpiring development coordinator for AFL Queensland, Rohan is also a keen local golfer and committee member of the charity that raises funds to develop and deliver speciality golf and social enterprise opportunities for those with an intellectual or physical disability, the isolated, youth at risk and others. Rohan says the charity seeks to change lives and break down social isolation by promoting opportunities and initiatives that promote inclusion. “GPAI will support the run, which I’m calling the glass half full – half marathon. They will have a marquee set up at the base of the mountain with information about what the charity is about and I’ll have a friend helping on the day to cook up a barbeque if people would like to make a donation to GPAI,” Rohan said. The event will take place between 6am and 11am. As well as this charity challenge, Rohan has also set himself a motivational challenge to complete a physically inspired activity 100 times this year. He has committed to running a 6km round trip

challenge up Mount Ngungun from his home and back, and to date has completed the circuit 58 times – which is not bad considering the track was closed for a number of months this year. “My fitness has certainly improved heaps since I first started,” Rohan said. At first it would take me over 50 minutes to complete the circuit from home but now I can do it in about 36 minutes.” Every time Rohan completes one of his 100 challenge he puts a gold coin into a jar and at the end of the year he will also donate that money to GPAI. “It’s a really great way to challenge yourself and to also help others by raising money for a charity of your choice and anyone can do it. “Just pick a physical activity, set yourself the goal that you’ll do it 100 times throughout the year and every time you do it put a dollar or two into a jar.” To find out more about Rohan’s challenge you can follow him on Instagram @challenge100x. He has also set up an online fundraising account in www.everydayhero.com/au for GPAI link https://asf.org.au/projects/gpai/rohan-briggs-glasshalf-full-half-marathon

Council rejects transport corridor duplication Sunshine Coast Council has rejected Queensland Government plans for the future duplication of a transport corridor within environmentally sensitive areas adjacent to the Pumicestone Passage. As part of long-term planning for the growth of the region, the Department of Transport and Main Roads is investigating options for creating a north-south arterial corridor running to the east of the existing Bruce Highway. At last week’s council meeting a report was endorsed expressing the council’s opposition to the corridor generally extending from Sunshine Coast Council’s southern boundary to Bells Creek Road, through the area identified as a future green belt between Caboolture and the Sunshine Coast. This area has been identified as an inter-urban break within the South East Queensland Regional Plan 2017, and extends through an area generally referred to as Halls Creek. The local community and many across the Sunshine Coast expressed their support for a 2014 partnership between the Sunshine Coast Council and Moreton Bay Regional Council to maintain the Halls Creek area as a landscape buffer and ‘green lungs’ for the region. The council report shows that the government’s plan introduces additional impact and future development pressure within the inter-urban break. Keeping the inter-urban break intact formed only part of council’s argument against the government’s plans. Council planners have determined that the future supply of transport corridors – within the envisaged network provided by duplicated rail lines, six-lane

Bruce Highway, four-lane Steve Irwin Way and the Bells Creek arterial road connecting through to Caloundra – provides more than enough capacity for the expected increase in transportation requirements. Their calculations suggest that the capacity of the future system will only be 65% utilised in 2051, meaning that the proposed north-south arterial corridor is not required. The council’s report also highlights that improving the heavy rail system, connected through to the coast via the long-awaited CAMCOS (Caboolture to Maroochydore Corridor Study) linkage, is a preferred long-term option to reliance on cars. “An affordable and sustainable future transport plan must rely more heavily on rail as the highest order mass transit option,” the report said. Council also acknowledged that technology – specifically autonomous vehicles – will change the way transportation happens, providing improvements with traffic flow, travel times and safety. Division 1 councillor and council’s transport portfolio representative Rick Baberowski called for the state to fix the three existing corridors first. “Imagine the massive scale of development that would be potentially opened up if a new highway was to be built. I believe the only two mechanisms they have would be a combination of tolls and development contributions." Cr Baberowski said. “That’s potentially not the worst of it. I also believe that this possible highway development could threaten the viability of our forestry plantations altogether, and if the plantations leave the region, sprawling development becomes unstoppable.”

Business News Love of wine leads to a respected career Maleny residents may not know they have an expert wine enthusiast at their disposal. Andrew Jones, from Purple Palate, has been working in the hospitality industry since he was 20 years old. After discovering an interest in all things wine, he undertook further study to become one of few in the world to gain qualifications through the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET), based in London. After running hotels for 15 years, Andrew moved into the retail market, discovering an interest in wine which extended far beyond just selling a product. “I wanted to learn more about the products I was selling,” he said. “Seeing where they are made and what is needed to produce a good quality product became important to me, which is why I decided to do further study.” His interests continued to grow as he wanted to learn more about where products were made, what conditions they needed and the history behind how they came to fruition. In the past few years, Andrew has completed several courses and most recently obtained his level four Diploma in Wines, to become one of 10,000 worldwide to hold the qualification. Andrew said his education had taken him to many different places, learning the necessities of wine making and production including different tasks and factors that affect the style, quality and price. He has travelled throughout Australia, Spain, France, Italy and Scotland, to name a

few, and has even been an adjudicator at the Barossa Wine Show in previous years. “The whole educational experience of completing the diploma, including visiting and meeting people who are passionate about making, enjoying and appreciating wine, has been enjoyable,” he said. Andrew’s diploma is just the beginning as he hopes to complete a Masters in Wine through WSET. It is an exclusive program but Andrew hopes he will be successful in gaining a coveted spot. There are just 330 individuals worldwide who hold a MW – including two hailing from Queensland who, Andrews says, have been fantastic in taking him under their wing. “And they are, without exception, wonderful people.” Andrew has brought his expert knowledge, understanding and passion for wine to Maleny, passing his training and knowledge on to his team – to the benefit of locals. Purple Palate holds regular events throughout the month, which Andrew says are well received. They include wine tasting, information evenings and master classes. If you want expert advice to ensure your next drop is a perfect one, visit Andrew and his team at Purple Palate at 12 Bicentenary Lane, Maleny.

Beerburrum quarry looks to extend lifespan Holcim Australia has applied to Sunshine Coast Council to extend its extraction permit for another four years at Sunrock Quarry on Nursery Road at Beerburrum. The current permit expired on September 14 and the quarry needs to extend its development permit to continue to operate. In a submission to council, Holcim said that a previous expansion of production capacity, approved under an earlier permit, had been delayed by a number of market factors. “In the time since the development permit was issued, market conditions in the Sunshine Coast region have steadied and, as a result, production volumes from the Sunrock Quarry have remained stable for much of this time,” the recent submission said. “As a result of steadied market conditions, the

life of available reserves within Sunrock Quarry has been sufficient to service the local market for longer than was anticipated at the time the approval to expand production capacity was obtained.” According to Holcim, the continuation of the quarry operation will have little impact on local communities. “The proposed extension of currency period will not result in inconsistencies with the current legislation and policies applying to the development and the approved development will continue to be consistent with the community’s reasonable expectations for works associated with the existing quarry and the approved extension at this location.” If approved, this will push the development permit timeframe out to September 2023.

Community News Winning logo design

The Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee Inc (BSMC) recently ran a school-based competition to encourage emerging graphic artists to create a design for the new association’s logo. Last week, year six student Will Dellaway from Glasshouse Christian College was presented with a certificate and $100 in prize money for his brilliant effort in designing the committee’s new logo, which will now feature on its letterhead, advertising and sponsorship promotion. Helen Weil from BSMC said the management committee ran the competition to attract talented young local artists and/or computer whizzes willing to take on the challenge. The design needed to be of a general nature with a focus on being active and being a community. It also needed to encompass and be representative of all of the involved groups plus those that may become users in the future, and feature a representation of the Glass House Mountains. “As a multi-sporting club facility, the design brief was a tall order and required some serious thought, but we believed that there were some young and very talented designers in the school communities so we were happy to put it out to our local young people,” Helen said. The competition closed at the end of August and the winner was decided at the following BSMC meeting earlier this month. Helen said that originally the design prize money offered was $50 but to acknowledge the extra efforts that Will undertook to tweak the final product, the committee decided to surprise him at the presentation assembly with an additional $50. “Will did an excellent job and included some extra changes that we asked for. He is a lovely young gentleman and with his extra efforts we were happy to give him $100 as a show of our appreciation,” Helen said.

Maleny launches 18-hole member drive with three-year deal Maleny Golf Club is offering a special three-year membership option to new members as it prepares to bring the final six holes of the award-winning Sunshine Coast hinterland course into play in early 2020. Maleny Golf Club, which opened in 2015, is known for its welcoming country hospitality and still has significant growth capacity to accommodate new male, female and junior members interested in playing socially or competitively. There is currently no nomination fee. Anyone taking up the $2,244 offer will enjoy full gold membership from the day they sign up until October 31, 2022 and avoid anticipated annual fee increases in the meantime. The 2019/2020 full gold membership fee will be $748. President Dr Max Whitten said the offer represented both good value for money and an opportunity for members and newcomers to help the club fund mowing and maintenance fleet additions to service the expanded 18-hole course. “We will be bringing the last six of our 18 holes into play early in the new year and have committed to purchasing and leasing additional equipment so we can continue to deliver our high standard of course presentation,” Dr Whitten said. The current 12-hole, par-46 course incorporates an environmentally low-impact design by golf architect Graham Papworth that preserves and integrates existing wetlands and native flora. The completed 18-hole course will be comprised of two par 5s, ten par 4s and six par 3s, presenting a par 68 layout featuring unique revetted greenside bunkering, Tifdwarf Bermudagrass greens and kikuyu fairways within a peaceful, scenic hinterland setting.

Volunteers for Street Party needed

The countdown is now on to the Glasshouse Country Street Party in Beerwah on Friday, October 18 from 4-9pm. Event organisers are keen to enlist the support of locals who would like to volunteer for a few hours or for the whole day. Celebrate Glasshouse Country president Judy Tomlinson said that the success of the event was totally a team effort and relied on the whole community pulling together. The Celebrate Glasshouse Country team work on getting sponsorships, grants and fundraising to pay for the infrastructure, rides and organise the service providers. However, it is the great work of volunteers that takes the night to a whole new level, creating a professionally run event that is fun for all age groups. After the last street party in 2017, feedback from stallholders was that it was the best run event they had attended, acknowledging that the volunteers made them feel very welcome and cared for. Volunteers of all ages are encouraged to get involved in the event. If you would like to volunteer you can send an email to info@celebrateGC.com.au or follow the link to the Google Docs form at https://forms.gle/JBd2Yhh3BRhkaRXRA or go to the Celebrate Glasshouse Country Facebook page.

Time to top-up your tanks? Have you checked your water tanks recently?

Unitywater is encouraging residents who are not connected to the town water supply to check their tanks and book in a water delivery. Unitywater executive manager customer and community Katherine Gee said that with recent dry weather and no rain forecast, it was a good time to consider topping up tanks. “It’s getting warmer and generally water consumption increases for activities such as watering gardens,” Ms Gee said. “We’re seeing our fill stations for water carriers being used more frequently and some residents may be very close to running out or have run out of water already so it’s really important to check tank levels regularly. “Our fill stations are open 24 hours a day, with the exception of our Landsborough site which is open 6am–10pm. “We empathise with residents on tank water during this prolonged dry weather and encourage them to think about topping up and contacting their water carrier before they run dry.” Ms Gee said that with the lack of rainfall across South East Queensland, it was important for everyone to be water wise. “You can limit your showers to four minutes, water the garden in the early morning or late afternoon and make sure appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines are only used when they are full,” she said. You can see some tips on how you can save water at www.unitywater.com/water-tips.

If you were going to unveil a new book on the history of Queensland homes and gardens, you couldn’t find a more appropriate location than the historic Pattemore House in Maleny. On Saturday, September 14, well known Montville gardeners Kyleigh and Michael Simpson (pictured) launched their two latest books - ‘Our Queenslanders, Homes - Gardens: Their Second Century’ and ‘Queenslander Gardens. Plants for their Second Century: with Historical References’. These two titles join their previous seven books recording and cataloguing stories and histories of gardens and gardening across Australia. Michael said these colourful books illustrated the case for recognition and protection of our architectural and horticultural heritage. “In fact, the Queenslander house may be Australia’s best known architectural style on the world stage,” Michael said. “As well as defining aspects of structural detail, our books describe the experience of living in a Queenlander and illustrate fine urban and rural examples of these houses and gardens, including here at Pattemore House.

“These colourfully illustrated books touch on architecture, history, horticulture and Queensland identity with referenced detail.” If you’d like to know more about their books, information is available on their website montvillegarden.com. You may recognise the Simpson name as they are the owners of the beautiful garden The Shambles in Montville, which they regularly open to raise funds for charity. They have an open garden coming up on October 5-6, with plant stalls and a collectable stall. The Shambles garden, located at 85 Western Avenue Montville, will be open 9am-4pm over the October 5-6 weekend. Entry is $4 (children free). Or if you would like to look inside or around the garden at Pattemore House, it will be open to the public this Saturday, September 27 from 1-4 pm for tours, short films, afternoon tea and plenty of hospitality. Pattemore House is at 15 Porters Lane, North Maleny and has plenty of parking and disabled access too. See more on the Pattemore House Facebook page www. facebook.com/pattemorehouse/.

Chaplaincy Golf Classic a big hit Contributed by Lewis Kwarcianyi Forty players teed off at the Beerwah Golf Course on Friday, September 6, for a fun day to raise money for the chaplaincy program at Glasshouse Mountains State School. The ten teams enjoyed a barbeque lunch cooked by the Beerwah Lions Club before making their way around 18 holes and finishing with a presentation and charity auction.

All those interested in ensuring the survival of koalas in this region are invited to attend. Please join us to learn what KAI has done to date to ensure the sustainability of the koala population in South East Queensland. Our guest speaker, Amy Robbins from Endeavour Veterinary Ecology, will provide research results in relation to the chlamydia project sponsored by KAI. Amy investigated the short- and long-term clinical outcomes for 167 koalas with chlamydia who underwent capture, telemetric monitoring and intensive veterinary management as part of a large scale population management program in South East Queensland. Amy is also keen to garner support for her new project investigating whether habitat quality is a key factor in determining chlamydial disease progression in koalas. There will also be an opportunity to purchase koala-related fund raising items as Christmas gifts. Morning tea will be provided.

Police calling for help

Maple 3 Café, Maleny Veterinary, The Orangery, MCSR Café, Judy Coey Optometry and the Maleny Visitor Centre. Lionel Tilley Maleny Rotary Club

Police are investigating an incident involving a pedestrian struck by a car in Glass House Mountains last Saturday. Preliminary investigations indicate that around 11.15am a pedestrian was jogging north along Old Gympie Road when he was struck by a car travelling in the same direction. The jogger was thrown into a gully and sustained critical injuries. He was airlifted to hospital. The forensic crash unit is investigating. Anyone in the area who may have dash cam footage or witnessed the incident is urged to contact police. If you have information for police contact Policelink on 131 444 or provide information using the online form 24 hours a day.

Extension to quarry

I cannot believe the residents of Glass House Mountains are not shouting their disapproval of the extension to the quarry. What impact do you think 200 30 tonne fully laden trucks with trailers every day rumbling down our streets past the school and through our beautiful peaceful town will have? The blasting vibrations can travel up to 10km, so when your house foundations move and your floor tiles crack and your doors jam – guess why! The quarry is so concerned about the public backlash they have employed a professional public relations officer to smooth over any complaints. They even put on a “get to know us day” so you would think they are good corporate citizens, trying to convince you everything is okay, but look at the facts. It will be a nightmare. Residents need to voice their concerns to our local state member Andrew Powell on 5435 2013 and council representative Rick Baberowski on 5420 8987. Please act now before it’s too late. The club wishes to say a hearty thank you to both the advertisers for their continuing support and to the purchasers of the calendar. Approximately $8500 is raised through the calendar project annually, which, when added to our other fundraising events, allows the club to distribute approximately $40,000+ each year through grants and donations. As the calendar proves a popular means of showcasing what the hinterland has to offer many people buy several copies to send to friends and relatives. minister (colleague of MPs Powell and Wallace) said it doesn’t matter what causes climate change, we just need to get on and fix problems as we find them. Under this method we spend millions planting trees to replace the ones we could have protected in the first place. We spend billions buying back water for the Murray Darling while allocating millions of litres of river water to agribusiness. We are spending $500,000 doing experimental fixes in the Great Barrier Reef. Over and over the Coalition is doing this in front of our noses. They support mates in industries that create the problems, then they use our taxes to do partial fixes of the very same problems. Contemplate what we might have done with the money. Generous support from Iolar

Contributed by Ted Prickett The good news continues for the Glasshouse Country Anglican Church Community Food Bank. We have been blessed by a donation of $2000 from Community Recycling Inc and Iolar Operational Services. While we will still need to continue to accept donations of food from our church members and the good folk of Glasshouse Country who donate through the bin at Fresh & Save, we will be able to buy extra food when demand is high and hopefully be more generous to the folk who need our help. We are pleased to publicly acknowledge the generosity of Community Recycling Inc and Iolar Operational Services.

By Sonia Clark Maleny-based wildlife rescue volunteer Sammy Ringer is urging people to call through all wildlife emergencies directly to the WILVOS (Wildlife Volunteer Association Inc) 24-hour hotline instead of reaching out on social media. Sammy said that local wildlife volunteers were being absolutely hammered at the moment and it was utterly heartbreaking when messages about injured animals sent via platforms such as Facebook might not be seen in time. “It breaks my heart to get home and find an eight-hour old message on Facebook about some poor critter that needed help,” she said. “We rescuers are mostly on the road doing our work and so are often not able to check Facebook. We also attend rescues over a wide area, some of which have no or very limited reception. “The WILVOS phone line is a 24-hour service that can mobilise a rescue team member as quickly as possible. Please use this number to report any injured animal,” Sammy said. A wildlife crisis is currently being reported with native and wild animals desperately seeking water and food. This is particularly affecting the local grey-headed flying fox population with desperate animals flying low seeking food and water. Sadly, this search is leading many of these creatures to get caught in fencing or barbed wire. Sammy said she was currently attending to 4-5 bat rescues a day. If community members find an injured bat on their property or caught in wire fencing it is vitally important that they do not try to touch or free the animal themselves. “If you find an injured bat caught up in fencing please don’t try to free it. Throw a towel around it and call the WILVOS immediately,” Sammy said. For those wishing to provide some relief for wild animals, Sammy suggests leaving out a flat bowl of water. She also suggests those wanting to help or to join the WILVOS go to www.wilvos.org.au. A local fundraiser to support the work of the WILVOS will be held at Tesch Park, Maleny on Saturday, October 5 at 11am. To report wildlife emergencies ring the WILVOS 24-hour hotline on 5441 6200.

Creating wetland habitats

A workshop on transforming farm dams into wetland habitat will be run by Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare (MRWL) on Saturday, October 19 from 9.30-11.30am at the Mooloolah Native Nursery. The workshop coincides with the Mooloolah Native Nursery open day to celebrate the beginning of Saturday trading for the nursery. There will be a 20% discount on plants, tours of the biocontrol facility, a wildlife display and lucky door prizes. All are welcome to join in the open day fun from 10am–2pm free of charge. The nursery is located at the Holcim Site, 2670 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. The workshop is sponsored by Sunshine Coast Council’s grants program.

Lab grown diamonds a stunning alternative We were pleased to hear the news of the engagement of Bindi Irwin and boyfriend Chandler Powell earlier this year. Attention quickly turned to her stunning engagement ring, which she revealed in an Instagram post shortly after was in fact a laboratory grown diamond. Although lab grown diamonds, or created diamonds, are not a new concept Australia has been slow to embrace them. However, their popularity is growing and Bindi’s stunning diamond ring has definitely inspired a flurry of interest in the way they are created. Lab grown or created diamonds, such as the one featured in Bindi’s engagement ring, are created by simulating natural conditions of extreme heat and pressure, or chemical vapor deposition. A sliver of existing type IIA diamonds - which are the purest and most thermally conductive of all diamonds - is placed into an environment that replicates favourable growing conditions of carbon compounds. They can take between 60–120 days to create, depending Image from Instagram on colour and size.

And luckily if you’re interested in purchasing a lab created diamond you don’t have far to travel to get one as Maleny Jewellers is thrilled to present ALTR Created Diamonds in store. Jim Goulton, from Maleny Jewellers, said that the biggest benefit he sees for customers is that there is a vast difference in the cost of making them compared with the cost of mining diamonds. “I’ve had quite a few customers come to me who, after doing their own research, are choosing created diamonds over mined diamonds,” Jim said. “This is both for ethical reasons and because of price.” The cost of created diamonds is around 30% less than mined diamonds and they are a bigger, brighter and cleaner diamond as they have no imperfections. “The diamonds are identical in cut, colour and clarity, and no-one, not even jewellers, can tell them apart,” he said. “At a fraction of the price of natural diamonds, they definitely win on price.” Both mined and created diamonds are identical in chemical, optical and physical condition. ALTR Created Diamonds are laser inscribed with ‘lab grown’, are graded with the

same standards as mined diamonds and carry certification. Maleny Jewellers’ goal is to provide customers with the ability to make an informed choice about their diamond purchase. Zo & Co means beautiful cakes

Zo & Co is the latest incarnation of local Maleny cake designer Zoe Newton (formerly Cakes by Zoe). For the past seven years, Zoe has been delighting locals with her delicious custom cakes. Since she has been in business, Zoe has seen many trends in wedding cakes and has noted the current trend is towards naked cakes with fresh, natural flowers instead of sugar flowers. “The naked cakes are beautiful but it is a little bit sad for me as I absolutely love making sugar decorations,” Zoe laughs. “But I always strive to make every bride’s personal cake dream come true so nothing is too much of a stretch.” She says the most popular flavours now are fruit-based mudcakes and, of course, classic chocolate. Zoe hand makes all of her cakes from fresh, locally based ingredients so they taste just as good as they look. Gone are the days of the simple fruit cake, though some brides will order it as their top tier so it can be frozen to use on their first anniversary. Zo & Co gives brides instructions to store and defrost top tiers and offers a re-icing service for just $20, complete with a paper posy to help celebrate their paper wedding anniversary. Zoe also offers a free one-hour consultation to discuss your cake needs and she tends to buck the trend when it comes to pricing her wedding cakes. “My prices for wedding cakes are exactly the same as it would be for the same cake made for any other occasion,” Zoe said. If you would like to have a chat to Zoe about your cake needs, call her on 0488 051 619 or book via her website at www.zoandco.com.au.

Hinterland Families Arrr those kindy kids

School concert at Beerwah

Talk like a Pirate Day is nationally recognised as the major fundraiser for Childhood Cancer Support. This week the Beerwah Kindy kids were more than happy to take the opportunity to say “Ahoy there, me hearties” while dressed like a pirate and raising funds for families affected by childhood cancer. If you would like to join in the fun and find out more about the community kindergarten, you are welcome to come along to an open day on Saturday, October 12, from 9.3011.30am. Pirate William dressed and ready

Parents, families and friends were entertained and in awe again as they watched Beerwah State School’s recent biannual whole school concert. Each class or group prepared a spectacular item with a variety of song and dance displays. Even deputy principal Deb Lawrence joined in the fun and danced the hoedown in a dance-off to ‘The Git Up’ song. The choir and band out did themselves with wonderful performances. From deep in the jungle with prep and year 1 to outer space with year 6, the audience was wowed and amazed.

Assistance for your sporting champions Did you know the federal government has a Local Sporting Champions program that provides financial assistance to aspiring young athletes, coaches and officials between the ages of 12-18 attending eligible state, national or international sporting championships? The program supports families to meet the costs associated with attending sporting competitions including competition entry fees, travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment. Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said that since his election in 2016, more than 100 local sporting champions had been helped to live out their dreams and attend a major competition outside our community. “The Sunshine Coast has a fantastic record of producing sporting champions of every kind and this year I hope we can help even more to make their mark on the biggest stages,” Mr Wallace said. Successful applicants can receive $500-$750 towards the cost of attending championships. The base grant is $500, with applicants travelling 800-1999km to their nominated championships receiving an additional $100 and those travelling internationally or more than 2000km receiving an additional $200, while applicants residing in a rural electorate receive an additional $50. Applications for the Local Sporting Champions program are open throughout the year, with four assessment periods. To be considered for the next assessment period, applications must be in by September 30. For more information on Local Sporting Champions grants, including the eligibility criteria and to apply, visit www.sportaus.gov.au/lsc.

Contributed by Sally Joyce Over the past few weeks our junior classes at Peachester State School have been planting out their new mini garden beds. They have planted marigolds, begonias, purple snow peas, tomatoes and popcorn! On Tuesday while in the garden a very special butterfly circled over our group. Ellie cried out “Mum, that is the butterfly on our shirt!” Much to our surprise we looked up and it was a beautiful male Richmond birdwing butterfly. Our first early sighting of the season. We still have Richmond birdwing butterfly car stickers for sale. All funds go to our Enviro Club for projects such as propagating more birdwing vines. Purchase them at our office or the Peachester Fruit Shop.

Get a smile makeover

With Kelly Sweeting

With Dr Karen McCloy

Esprit Psychology opened its doors in Beerwah in August 2016. Since that time we have been working with individuals, couples and families to help achieve meaningful and worthwhile lives. Our psychologist Kelly Sweeting has experience in a wide range of problems including: depression, anxiety, stress, grief and loss, addiction, relationship counselling, trauma, complex mental health conditions and work place difficulties. Kelly uses various evidence-based interventions to support her clients. Kelly mainly uses cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and solution focus brief therapy. The philosophy of Esprit Psychology is to encourage the people who we work with to learn and understand the problem in-hand and allow then to identify their own goals. The journey starts with finding out what the problem is and then finding the best way for the individual to address the problem. The skills that people learn in sessions are not only useful in the present but hopefully will be useful in the future. Kelly works with individuals from 12 year olds to older adults. If you receive a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, your sessions will be bulk billed. Alternatively you can book an appointment privately. Acupuncture

Gone are the days of just sweating it out on the treadmill. The health and fitness industry has evolved considerably, with more people now turning to alternative activities to keep themselves fit and healthy. Although there may still be a stigma attached, the popularity of pole dancing as an exercise option has grown over the past few years, with more women feeling the benefits of the activity both physically and mentally. The University of Western Australia (UWA) in a media statement last month outlined the findings of research conducted over the past few years exploring the popularity and perception of pole dancing as a form of exercise. Dr Joanna Nicholas, from the UWA School of Human Sciences (exercise and sport), found that pole dancing was unique

as it combined three forms of exercise - cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and flexibility – making it a good choice for achieving different types of exercise in one work out. Dr Nicholas said it was interesting that those who did choose it as a form of exercise had a longterm loyalty to the activity. The activity combines physical technique, strength and dance and has evolved from Eastern and Western influences. Benefits include increased strength, improved coordination and rhythm, and it could contribute to weight loss and body confidence. Local Beerwah gym Phoenix Fitness offers a number of weekly pole fitness classes and has beginner, intermediate and advanced class options, depending on experience. To find out more follow them on Facebook or call 5494 6114.

Lazzaro

In some ways Happy as Lazzaro looks like it could be set in the distant feudal past: the sharecroppers on an aristocrat’s isolated estate Inviolata - are in a permanent state of debt while they work hard and live in squalor. However, director Alice Rohwacher has created a mesmerising allegory in which her anti-capitalist message is unequivocally directed at modern Italy. As usual, the rich exploit the poor but in this story the poor plan revenge. The film’s first half depicts how Lazzaro, a good-natured peasant, is persuaded by a young nobleman to help him orchestrate his own kidnapping. The second half of the film drifts into magical realism, which is open to various interpretations and not a little ambiguity. Overall, the director is making a strong comment on the lack of social justice resulting from the global mass migration of rural workers to the cities, where they often become prey to a different sort of poverty and exploitation. Featuring a cast of non-actors and professionals, Happy as Lazzaro has been described as “thought-provoking” and “captivating”. At Cannes in 2018 it won the award for Best Screenplay. Come along and judge for yourself! When: Saturday, September 28 Where: Maleny Community Centre, Maple St, Maleny Food and drinks: Dinner 6-7 catered by Claude's Food. In the Garden Jobs for the yard in October

• Look at top dressing your lawn. A thin layer of top-dressing soil is best. Any hollow areas need the turf lifted, the soil added underneath and then replace the turf. Don’t just pile it on top as it will kill the grass and encourage weeds. • Watch out for leaf miner in your citrus trees. Recent new growth is susceptible to this burrowing caterpillar. Spray every 2-3 weeks with a pest or white oil to avoid leaf damage. • Grape vines will be growing and bunches of grapes forming. Keep up the water to ensure plump juicy fruits. If birds are a problem, cover the whole vine with netting or the bunches with individual pest exclusion bags. • Prune your figs. Next season’s fruit are produced only on the new growth, so pruning will mean more fruit. • Plant seed or seedlings for Christmas dinner, especially colourful leafy lettuces like red mignonette, butter beans, golden button squash and cherry tomatoes. • Your mangoes, citrus and lychees need good soil moisture during this month – water weekly. • The warmer weather is perfect for planting tropical fruit trees such as babaco, longan and tamarillo. • If you’re lucky enough to grow tropical peaches, you should be picking them this month. • Dig lots of compost and manure into the spot where you will be planting your dahlias next month.

From an investment point of view, it is important to know the land tax thresholds and calculations, as it could be a prudent decision to spread your investment portfolio across several states to reduce your land tax payable.

Dr Percy Harold Seventh Day Adventist Church

A change as good as a holiday? A week ago young Jordan delighted his church with a presentation on the foundation of the church being Jesus Christ. I call Jordan young in comparison with my years as 21 is still young to me but he is a grown man, a builder, an intelligent and insightful leader of his peers, and also a leader within the church community. It was a full house at the lovely Glasshouse Uniting Church, which we have been so graciously lent by the local congregation while our 60-yearold Adventist church in Landsborough is being rebuilt in an expanded and more modern format. Fortunately, during construction some of our members are worshipping at other churches in Maleny, Nambour, Maroochydore, Sippy Downs and Cooroy, otherwise we may not all fit. We are anticipating the completion of construction when the whole congregation can come together again. Being an Adventist church, we also look forward to the return of Jesus as promised so many times in the Scriptures. So, in effect, we are have a double anticipation at present, including

the completion of construction in Landsborough and our return to 27 Landsborough-Maleny Road. Preaching on the foundation of the church, Jesus Christ, Jordan also expressed his faith in the second coming as part of that foundational truth. I was also impressed by the multi-ethnicity of the congregation with members and visitors from not just English backgrounds, but South American, Spanish, Yugoslav, US, Romanian and others. This week many of us will be at the annual church convention for the South Queensland region at Kallangur. Some in caravans, some in tents, some in cabins and many attending as day visitors. I have a busy schedule introducing several presentations each day on Faith FM radio and on the live video streaming TV service online at LMMSA. And that brings me back to Jordan. He has a great voice for radio and an even better face for television! Maybe it’s time to hand over to the strength of his youth. DQ $XVWUDOLDQ &KULVWLDQ &KXUFK

Sport The Range Croquet Club

Contributed by Ken Barker On Thursday we had a range of friendly games of golf croquet played by Donnie Griffiths, Neil Drury, Kath Smith, Helen Andrews, Bev Sockhill, Gillian Bradley and Sally Adams. We had several visitors on Sunday. Faye Mestrovic a previous club member brought two players up from the Windsor Club, Francesca de Wytt and Greg Bury. Wallace Roy and Helen were too strong against Donnie and Francesca winning 7-5 in the two games of golf that were played on lawn two. Sarah Widin won a close handicap game against Donna 17-15. Greg has represented Queensland 29 times and Australia 11. He has also represented Australia in golf croquet. He has recently been appointed Australian Director of Coaching. We were honoured to have him visit our small club. He played a combined team of Ken Barker and Vince Carbery beating them 26-0 with a triple peel. Then he played a game of singles against Vince winning 10-7. Coaching for beginners and others is available from 8am to 10am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Play days on the laid-back lawns at the bottom of the showground are 1pm for 1.30pm on Thursdays and Sundays. Our web address is: https://rangecroquetatmaleny.org.au. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193, or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

Sport Easy Find Classifieds Beerwah Golf Club

Contributed by Brenda Briese Saturday, September 14 was a stableford with a field of 26 players. The winner was Michelle Wormwell 37 points from Sue Williamson 34 points. NTPs: 2 - Jo Malone, 16 - Sue Williamson, 18 Heather Henn (second shot). Ball run down went to 33 pts. Thursday, September 19 was versus par competition with 41 ladies. As the greens on the back nine were being renovated we played the front nine twice. The front nine greens were already cored, so putting was a bit "hit and hope". However one lady didn't seem to be troubled as she had her first hole in one on the fifth hole which was very exciting! Congratulations Helen Lewis. Division one winner Val Turner +2 from Helen Lewis -2. Division two winner was Karen Madsen +3 from Josie Thistlethwaite +2. NTPs: 2 - Toni Grant. 5 Helen Lewis (HIO), 2 - Lea Garner, 5 - Carol Cork. Ball run down went to -2. Karen Madsen has very kindly sponsored any holesin-one for the year, thank you Karen.

Maleny and District Green Hills Fund Notice of 2019 Annual General Meeting

Helen Lewis and Karen Madsen

Maleny Bowls Club

Contributed by Graeme Glover Spring has sprung and so have a number of bowlers who come out in the warmer weather. Weather, and in particular the dry, is impacting on many bowls clubs and their ability to prepare a lovely grass green. The decision a number of years ago to convert to an artificial green, while controversial has enabled us to play all year, both night and day as well as reduce our maintenance costs to virtually zero thanks to volunteer labour component. Maleny Bowls club is not unique in having volunteers but from my visits to other clubs it seems that those clubs who are well served by volunteers, no matter what the activity, are progressing better financially. Any small assistance helps to lighten the load. Thanks to our band of helpers. Congratulations to Jim King, Jim Weidman and Graeme Glover who were successful at the Woodford Pub day following on from their previous week’s win in Kilcoy. Thanks to all those members who have signed up for our monthly pairs on Monday. We have eight visiting teams, so a great day of bowls should be able to be reported in the next edition. Wednesday night sees the front runners Dave Edwards, Ian Spence and Steve Ellet continue their winning form. With only two weeks to go are they set for a big win in the absence of regular Ian Dickson. Friday Scroungers saw Brett Gillis return to the winners circle. Richard Bond and Jim King also came to the attention of the handicapper for their winning form. A reminder to all about getting teams in for the Mitre 10, Maleny Paint sponsored Scotty Fawkes Day Sunday, October 13. 40

The 2019 Maleny District Green Hills Fund Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday, 19th October at the Hinterland Business Centre, 38a Coral Street, Maleny at 9.00am. Nominations for Directors close 10.00am Saturday, 5th October 2019. Nominations are to be sent to the Secretary at jules.g.sharp@gmail.com or PO Box 662, Maleny Qld 4552. Proxy forms (available at www.greenhills.org.au) are to be received at our registered office, 455 North Maleny Road, Maleny Qld, 4552 by 10.00am, Saturday 12th October. All forms are available at the registered office and the website.

The Maleny Rangers Football Club Inc. Just for Laughs Short funnies

I threw a boomerang a few years ago, I now live in constant fear. My wife accused me of being immature. I told her to get out of my fort. You don’t need a parachute to go skydiving. You need a parachute to go skydiving twice. Parallel lines have so much in common. It’s a shame they’ll never meet. Someone stole my mood ring. I don’t know how I feel about that.

Your Stars ARIES March 21 - April 20 The New Moon this week certainly introduces new financial opportunities for you and if you have been house hunting, or even considering purchasing, it gives you the perfect opportunity to find a mortgage with a low interest rate. Alternatively, if you have been waiting for an insurance refund, those aspects will help speed that along too. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This is a week that offers some interesting opportunities for you. These opportunities usually revolve around family, partnerships and business connections. You could find a new accountant, a new computer technician or even begin a new romantic partnership if there is something deep and meaningful to discuss. Do this tactfully however! GEMINI May 22 - June 23 The New Moon in Libra this Saturday brings new creative and romantic opportunities. Perhaps time to start a family. If you are not presently involved with anybody this New Moon may well change that! There is a lot of emotional energy at home and it is important to ward off any negative thinking. You have a lot to share with friends and family now. CANCER June 24 - July 22 For our Cancer readers the New Moon in Libra heralds the need to make some changes in the home, perhaps a fresh start overall or even considering putting your home or apartment up for sale. It’s a really good time to do that! Problems in relationship areas can become challenging but return to normal within a few days with no harm done.

Week Beginning 25/09/2019

I broke my finger last week. On the other hand, I’m okay. I tried to catch fog yesterday. Mist. Working in a mirror factory is something I can totally see myself doing. What did the pirate say when he turned 80? ‘Aye matey’. What’s the difference between a well-dressed man on a bike and a poorly dressed man on a unicycle? Attire.

with Edgar J. Winter www.astroclairvoyant.com

LEO July 23 – August 22 New opportunities for creative selfexpression are perfect under this lovely New Moon in Libra and you might find you join forces with a friend or even a group creating a blog or website. These energies prompt you to celebrate important relationships and, with all things emotional, if there is one small jealous moment let it slide by. Don’t spoil the moment! VIRGO August 23 – September 22 This New Moon on Saturday sets off new opportunities for anything to do with communication. These initiatives may well provide considerably more income in the next few weeks and you will be able to prioritise how you can best use these funds for maximum benefit. Look for the best ways to promote yourself or your business. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 The New Moon this week in your own sign comes along just once a year and sets the tone for the next 12 months. It is indeed very powerful. Plan ahead and make a list of what you would like to experience and also to achieve in the next year and post it up where you see it every day. Words and thoughts have power! SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 New opportunities in relationships with friends may result in a chance to work behind the scenes in some capacity and the New Moon in Libra on the 28th helps you see how to use this energy to the best advantage. Time to use your well-honed diplomacy skills with colleagues or friends. Suddenly life does not seem as somber as it has for several months.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 You may find you are doing a lot more networking this week and it will show dramatic results. It can be as simple as having coffee with friends, playing tennis at a local club or even helping with a charity auction or book store. It’s about finding balance in your home/work life and the New Moon will work its magic for you. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 If you have been experiencing power struggles at home or work it’s time to recognise that this is negative and not worth your time or energy. Fortunately, the New Moon in Libra comes to your rescue, further strengthened with the transit of Mercury and Venus through Libra. A promotion or a totally new career path is on the cards. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 This week for our Aquarius readers, the New Moon on Saturday explodes into your chart bringing new opportunities in the arts or overseas travel. Plan something special with the one you love, as simple as a weekend away, tickets to a concert or an art exhibition you have both wanted to see. It’s a time for happiness and harmony. PISCES February 20 - March 20 You have an opportunity this week to consider finances and possible loans and repayments. Saturday’s New Moon supports all things financial or purchases on credit. Ask a lot of questions however, and make sure you have all your facts and figures clearly in mind. Don’t rush decisions. A word of warning - all things in moderation now!
