Safety is everyone's number one priority! There is a growing problem with vagrants entering Glenbrook Valley. They're filtering in from under the I 45 and Broadway bridges over Sims Bayou. Prostitutes walk the freeway frontage road and take care of their "business" on our neighborhood streets.

The problem is spreading. Broadway at Bellfort is a problem. Recently a vagrant tried to take up residence on the front porch of one of our senior citizens.

We have sought help from elected officials and the Houston Police Department. There have been small successes, but they don't last. Council Member Robert Gallegos has requested this community meeting. He and representatives from H.P.D. will share a clean up plan with us. Please make the effort and attend this meeting to express your concerns. Remember, we are the eyes and ears of the community, if we see something that doesn't look right, we have to SAY SOMETHING!

Reminder - Know the Danger Signs of Heat Stroke or Heat Exhaustion

What is the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke?

Glenbrook Valley Civic Club civicclub@glenbrookvalley.org

glenbrookvalley.org

Heat Exhaustion is your body reacting to the excessive loss of water and salt contained in your sweat. Heat exhaustion is usually associated with heavy activity or exertion. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include: • Profuse sweating • Paleness • Muscle cramps • Weakness • Dizziness • Headache • Nausea • Vomiting • Weak but rapid pulse • Fainting • Cool, moist skin If left untreated, heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke. Heat Stroke occurs when the body’s temperature rises rapidly and is unable to cool down due to the failure of the sweating system. Body temperature may rise to 106° or higher within 10 minutes which can cause permanent disability like brain damage, organ failure or even death if emergency treatment is not provided. Heat stroke symptoms include: • Extremely high body

temperature (above 103°F orally) • Red, hot, dry skin • No sweating • Very rapid, strong pulse • Throbbing headache • Dizziness • Nausea • Confusion • Unconsciousness The elderly, children up to four years of age, those who are overweight or suffering form respiratory or heart conditions are particularly vulnerable to to heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

It's Hurricane Season.......... again? Unusual, strange, unpredictable, and scary are a few words that can be used to describe our weather. Does that increase our chances for a hurricane?? Anything is possible, so be prepared! We tend to get smug if we've been in Houston through previous storms. If you have to evacuate, do you have an action plan? a road map? a list of medicines? your auto and home owner insurance policies? all your vehicles gassed up? supplies for after the storm? First thing locate your "hurricane supply box" or prepare one if you don't have one. While checking the inventory replace anything July, 2016

you "borrowed" through the year. Emergency supply kits should include: • Cell phones • NOAA weather radios and batteries • Flashlights and batteries • Bottled water • Non-perishable food • Clothing • Bedding • Personal hygiene products • Medications and copies of prescriptions • Special products for babies, elderly and medically fragile family members • Cash and credit cards • Photo ID, important documents and records • Pet supplies Additional information is available at www.houstonoem.org and glenbrookvalley.org

Es la estación de los huracanes…….. ¿otra vez?
