Before ANY exterior alteration is made to the exterior of your home, there are steps you MUST follow.

First - submit the plans and specifications to the GBV Architectural Review Board.

This may be done on line. Send your plans and specs to arb@glenbrookvalley.org or mail them to GBV ARB, P.O. Box 262164, Houston, TX 77207-2164. Emailing it will expedite the process. The Board will notify you and the Historic Preservation Dept. of their decision.

Second - apply for a Certificate of Appropriateness. Call the Historic Preservation Dept. to begin the application process for a Certificate of Appropriateness, 713-8377963.

Third - apply for a building permit. To inquire about obtaining building permits call the permitting department at 832-894-8840 for assistance.

With so many things headed in the right direction, we still have a lot of ongoing work to do to help keep the community on the right track. You can help in a few simple ways: 1. If you see trash around the neighborhood, or spare tires thrown out, in utility easements or other areas in and around the neighborhood, take a moment to stop and pick it up and properly dispose of it. Sure, we all have our own homes to worry about keeping up, but if everyone takes a little extra effort to go above and beyond, it can really make a difference in the overall look of the entire area.

2. Report any graffiti that appears in your area to 311. If you have a fence or utility box in your yard that gets “tagged” by graffiti, be sure and address it quickly. The quicker it is down, then those that do the tagging will realize that it will do them no good to tag in our area, it won’t stay up!

3. Keep porch lights or other exterior lighting on at night.

A well-lit neighborhood is a safer neighborhood and makes it easier and safer for those who might be out walking for exercise after dark.

4. Keep on the lookout for suspicious activity. Like much of Houston, we have had an up-tick in burglaries. If you see something suspicious, call the police. It is better to be wrong about it than not call and wish you had.

By going to the ARB first, they can help guide you through the process and make sure there are no deed-restriction violations that may cause the project to be redtagged, or can help with approval if it involves exterior changes that may require a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Houston Archeological and Historic Commission.

Heat Exhaustion With summer here, we need to be mindful of becoming overheated. Heat Exhaustion is caused by over-exposure to high temperatures usually combined with high humidity and strenuous physical activity. Extreme heat and lack of hydration can also cause heat exhaustion, especially in the elderly or those with various medical conditions.

If not treated immediately, heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke which can cause organ failure, brain damage and death.

In most cases, you can treat heat exhaustion yourself by following the tips listed here.

1. Rest in a cool place. Getting into an air-conditioned building is best, but at the least, find a shady spot.

Rest on your back with your legs elevated higher than your heart level.

2. Drink cool fluids. Stick to water or sports drinks. Don’t drink any beverages that have alcohol or caffeine, either of which can contribute to fluid loss.

3. Apply cool water to your skin. If possible, take a cool shower or soak in a cool bath. Don’t use alcohol on your skin.
