Hobby International Report by Ann Collum
Council Member James Rodriguez called a meeting on Wednesday, April 18, with the Hobby area civic club presidents, representatives from Southwest Airlines, and the Houston Airport System (H.A.S.) to discuss Southwest's proposal for international service at Hobby Airport. Ron Ricks, Senior Vice President with Southwest Airlines, spoke for the airline. Andy Akin was in attendance representing the Mayor. Mr. Akin described the process by which the idea of a possible international terminal at Hobby was born. Southwest approached the City with the proposal to establish international flights from Hobby. The appropriate departments began gathering background information and mapping the plan. When Southwest and H.A.S. were in agreement on a plan of action, the plan was presented to City Council.

their international service. Almost all airports that Southwest serves have contacted them to offer their airports for the facility. These other cities see the huge economic boon for the community that international service will provide the community. Unfortunately it appears that some members of Houston's City Council are caught up in the childish attitude of, "I didn't know what was going to happen so I'm against it!" The proposed international terminal will be paid for and built by Southwest Airlines. The estimated cost quoted was 100 million dollars. The terminal will have 5 gates and a customs facility. At the earliest, international flights won't begin until 2015. Projected flights would be 25 per day. Currently there are 140 Southwest flights a day from Hobby between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. Not all air traffic at Hobby is Southwest. The City Council will meet on May 8. Later in the month there will be community meetings held in the IAH area and Hobby area. City Council will vote on a "Memorandum of Understanding." It basically says the City and Southwest agree to the terms mapped out in the plan. It is not legally binding. The document then goes to Washington for approval from the United Sates Customs Department, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Transportation Security Administration. Southwest began flights from Hobby in 1971. They only fly Boeing 737's. There were more flights in the 80's than there are May, 2012
today, and the planes of the 80s were much louder. Hobby is land locked. There is no room for expansion. It is unbelievable and downright scary how many different rumors are going around about what all is going to happen. The newsletter is published at the end of a month so that it will arrive at your home early in the month. This said, the date and time for the proposed community meeting will be posted on our web site, glenbrookvalley.org. If you have signed up for the email list on our web site, you'll receive notice of the date, time, and location of the meeting via email. Cont’d p .1
