Glenbrook Valley Civic Club “Glenbrook Valley Is A Deed Restricted Neighborhood” October
2009
Mayoral Candidates Invited to our October Meeting All of the mayoral candidates have been invited to our Civic Club meeting on
Thursday, October 15, 7 p.m. at Glenbrook Methodist Church, 8635 Glen Valley. Our meeting is “on the calendar” of each candidate and we’re hoping they will be able to attend. The purpose of inviting the candidates is to acquaint them with our neighborhood, discover what they plan for our area, and to learn their philosophy for revitalizing the Broadway and Bellfort corridors.
Community Sale a HUGE Success Aptly referred to as “Teacups and Treasures,” the Glenbrook Valley Community Sale Friday, September 25th, Saturday, September 26th, and Sunday, September 27, was a HUGE success! The “teacup” proceeds will go to the Historic Designation expenses and the “treasures” proceeds are going to our legal expenses. Special thanks go to Chelby King and Don Browne for their hard work in acquiring the donation of the china and pottery stock from E-dish Antiques. Also, thank you Robert Searcy for allowing the “teacup” sale to take place in your garage, AND for all the time and energy unpacking and setting up the sale. “Thank you” doesn’t seem like enough to George Christy for his more than generous donation of “treasures” to our sale. The treasure sale is indebted to Raymond Crow for the generous contribution of his garage, driveway, and pricing expertise! Thanks to all Glenbrook Valley residents that contributed treasured items to the cause.

Back when it was laid out in 1954, Glenbrook Valley was a showpiece suburb, a mod vision of the glorious George Jetson age to come. Better Homes and Gardens even touted one of the six original Glenbrook ranchers as "the model home for all America." Unfortunately for those who bought in, Houston's march continued aggressively to the west, leaving affluent east side outposts like Hobby-area Glenbrook to wither in obscurity for decades. But now, with affordable homes on the West Side hard to find this side of Dairy Ashford, hip, young-ish Houstonians are starting to look east. And Glenbrook has a lot to offer — it reminds us of a much more stylish Sharpstown, with houses that would do a Mad Men character proud, set on lots practically the size of small farms.

Automated Recycling Mike Palmer with the City of Houston’s Solid Waste Management department was guest speaker at our September Civic Club meeting. We all received information about the new “single stream” automated recycling program in the mail, but it really makes a difference to hear it explained and be able to ask questions about the program. Everything placed in the green can must be clean and dry. The lid on the can must be closed in order for the truck to be able to properly empty it. Paper, plastic, and glass are the recyclable items. (cardboard is paper) The only thing that that does NOT recycle is Styrofoam. Motor and cooking oil are recyclable. They must be in bottles with caps, free standing near the recycle container. The maximum amount collected at one time is 5 gallons. So, after you deep fry your Thanksgiving turkey, pour the oil back in the container, put the lid on tight, and place it on the curb on recycle day!

National Night Out The official date to observe National Night Out is October 6th, but we should all be aware of things that are happening in our neighborhood everyday. Some of our streets are very dark; porch lights on would help reduce “crime invitation” that darkened areas create.
Editor’s Note I wish to apologize for the “heavy trash” mistake in the September newsletter. The computer did it! I was focused on getting the “tree trash” on the truck, but the computer kept eating the truck. When I finally got the truck and quote on the page, I never even thought about, much less saw, the text under the truck. There are no guarantees, but I’ll try very hard not to let that happen again.
If you see unfamiliar vehicles at a neighbors, call to be sure everything is okay.
