A Civic Club meeting is a great place to catch up on happenings in and around Glenbrook Valley, not to mention catch up with neighbors! Our guest speaker will be a Assistant Harris County Attorney Julie Countiss.

She will be discussing the on-going fight against nuisance properties in our area. Since her last visit with us a game room has closed, an injunction was filed against an adult bookstore to eliminate the prostitution there, 2 "Spas" on the freeway were closed, just to mention a few. Are there any properties you're concerned about? Join us and let Ms. Countiss know your concerns.

anchored in the ground on metal poles The brick base will be the "skinny" brick associated with mid-century style. The base and sign will be on a raised bed. The curbing around the bed is the same brick as the base of the sign and will stand about 12 inches tall.

The sign area will not be lighted, but there will be an irrigation system for the plantings. The plantings will be low maintenance and will be compatible with the landscaping going in on Broadway.

The markers on Bellfort will be like the one on Broadway, but each smaller in proportion to the esplanades on Bellfort.

The best, or scariest, information is last to be told....the cost! The Broadway marker will be around $20,000, which includes taxes and permit fees. The Bellfort marker at Glencrest will have a lesser cost and Glen Loch will be the least expensive. Our goal is to raise $50,000 to assure all 3 markers can be refreshed. Yes, that's a lot of money and a lofty goal, but it is achievable. We're applying for the Hobby Area Management District's matching grant for Neighborhood Identity markers.

We're also applying for a $5,000. matching grant from District I for the "Welcome to Houston" on the back of the Broadway sign. The profit from the October Home Tour goes to the marker fund.

Third Livable Centers Workshop The results of surveys taken at the first 2 workshops will be announced at this third meeting. The meeting is again at the DoubleTree Hotel, 8181 Airport Blvd. in the Moody Ballroom. More chairs and air condition are promised for this meeting.

Have you figured out the 6 grocery stores they said were in the area? The editor hasn’t, and has requested the grocery locations be named. Miss the meeting, miss the answer!

Holiday Decoration Planning It’s not too early to plan your yard decorations for the Holiday Season. In keeping with the Glenbrook Valley tradition of over 50 years, the Glenbrook Valley Civic Club will be presenting awards for yards judged “Most Beautiful,” M o s t Ori gi n al , ” an d fo r “Honorable Mention.” The judges will be looking for an overall theme, creativity, and how much thought and effort went into the

presentation.

We hope every resident will join the spirit of the season and participate. A wreath on the front door with the porch light turned on, of a few strings of lights on the house or shrubs. Help make your block the brightest!

Decorations should be put up no earlier that Thanksgiving week.

They will need to be removed by the weekend of January 14th.

Dogs Running Loose It's not bad enough that irresponsible strangers dump dogs in our area. We've had several instances of these dogs, as well as neighborhood dogs running loose, have killed other pets.

It's going to take a team effort to stop this invasion. We have some dedicated neighbors that have caught some of the stray dogs, had they vetted and taken them to shelters. But more always show up.

Some of our residents think it's all right to release their pets to run the streets for "exercise." It is NOT! City ordinance requires all pets, dogs and cats, to be on a leash. If you have an inconsiderate neighbor that has "free roaming" dogs, please call your Director-atLarge and report the home address of the roaming dogs. The plan is to enlist the help of our H.P.D.'s D.R.T. officers to issue citations to our irresponsible pet owners.
