A Note From the Partnership Dear Friends, Welcome to our Winter 2021-22 digital catalog. Winter is the perfect season to get creative! Sign up for one of our holiday workshops (pages 8, 9, 20) or take a class in a new art form. Many of our classes are back in person, but we still have some virtual classes for those who are more comfortable continuing with online activities. For restless kids during the winter, we offer so many options! Washington Conservatory of Music’s Musical Imagination Station, Young Yukes, and private music lessons will bring out the musician in any child (page 13). A sampling of other classes for kids includes: Animal Art and Poetry workshop (page 9); Making a Valentine’s Box, a parent/child workshop (page 8); and Traditional Irish dance classes for students starting at age 5 (page 10). Social dances have returned in-person and continue through the winter in the Spanish Ballroom, Bumper Car Pavilion, and Ballroom Back Room. Dance styles that are back include swing, waltz, tango, and more. To see what’s coming up check out our calendar. To find unique gifts for everyone on your holiday shopping list, visit our annual Holiday Art Show & Sale in the Popcorn Gallery and Stone Tower Gallery. Paintings, photographs, pottery, hand-made jewelry, ornaments, and more will entice you to shop – supporting the Park and local artists is a bonus! Other visual arts studios and galleries in the Park will also offer creative gift options. Stop by the Stone Tower Studio to see artists in action who bridge the representational and abstract approaches to artmaking (page 64). Our award-winning children’s theaters welcomed audiences back in the fall, and their programming continues with winter productions that include the Puppet Co.’s Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins from November 17, 2021– January 2, 2022 and perennial holiday favorite The Nutcracker celebrating its 32nd Anniversary from November 26, 2021-January 2, 2022 (page 15), and Adventure Theatre MTC’s Adventure’s Winterfest from November 18, 2021– January 2, 2022 is a world premiere of three short plays showcasing the work of three local writers giving their take on holiday magic as we celebrate the season of family, friendship, and winter fun (page 16). During this recovery period we continue to move into more normal operations, but the health and safety of our staff, instructors, partners, and patrons is still a top priority. We will always follow Montgomery County mask and social distancing requirements when they are in place, and many programs within the Park have their own Covid-19 guidelines in place as well. You can find mask and vaccination information on our Coronavirus Updates page. As a nonprofit organization, we still face difficult losses from the pandemic, and we greatly appreciate the financial support of the community. Please continue to support the Park with your contributions! If you can give, a donation at any level will help sustain the park and lead us into the future. It’s easy and quick to give online or text to give (Text “gepgive” to 202-858-1233). We hope you will continue your creative learning with us on site or online this winter and that you will #stayconnected! Stay well and creative,
Katey Boerner, Executive Director

Glen Echo Park
Service transferred management of the Park’s arts and cultural programs, as well as its historic buildings, to Montgomery County, which in turn created the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture, a nonprofit organization, to oversee the Park.
Glen Echo Park is one of the finest cultural resources in Montgomery County. It is home to 14 resident artists and organizations, a thriving social dance program, a restored 1921 Dentzel Carousel, numerous art studios and galleries, and hundreds of classes in visual and performing arts, including ceramics, painting, photography, glass, music, dance, and more. These activities, as well as free summer concerts, festivals, and special events, bring thousands of visitors to the Park each year.
From 2003 to 2010, extensive renovations of the Park’s facilities took place under the direction of Montgomery County and the National Park Service with input from the Partnership and resident organizations. These renovations were funded with major federal, state, and county resources as well as private donations. Renovations included the Spanish Ballroom, the Dentzel Carousel, the Puppet Co. Playhouse, the Arcade building, the Yellow Barn, Adventure Theatre, the Candy Corner, the Chautauqua Tower, the Ballroom Back Room, and the Caretaker’s Cottage. The Hall of Mirrors Dance Studio was renovated in 2014.
The site was first developed in the 1890s as a Chautauqua retreat but soon became the premier Washington area amusement park, serving the community until 1968. In 1971, after the amusement park closed, the federal government acquired the land in order to preserve the Potomac Palisades and prevent development along the river. The management of the Park was assigned to the National Park Service, which established the core of the current arts program. In 2002, the National Park

PUPPETRY
After our theatre doors have been closed for more than a year, we’re gearing up to reopen for in-person performances and events just in time for the Halloween season! Under new management and presenting a mix of tried and true Legacy productions and brand new Premiere productions, we can’t wait to see you!
What are Legacy and Premiere productions, you ask? Well, as we hope to reimagine and expand what you see at the Puppet Co., we also want to honor where we came from. So, Legacy productions are the shows created and performed by our founders, who retired in July of 2020. You’ll see the shows you know and love, like Wizard of Oz, Cinderella, and The Nutcracker, and so many more! Premiere productions are the new shows we’ll be creating for you! You’ll see additional puppetry styles, new stories, and hopefully see yourself in some of the characters on stage.
Ticket Prices for MAIN STAGE productions:
Out of an abundance of caution for our littlest patrons, we are planning on waiting to reinstate some of our programming. Classes will come offline and be in the theatre again, though at smaller class sizes. Tiny Tots will be back in December on a smaller schedule, and will return in full in the spring. At this time, the birthday room is not available for rental until 2022.
Tickets are $7 and are required for all patrons 2 and up and for little ones who are starting to crawl or walk. Please help us make sure there’s enough space for everyone when you’re considering if your child needs a ticket.

GLASSBLOWING
Glassworks at Glen Echo Park is the DC area’s first glassblowing school. Classes are taught year-round for novice and advanced students. When classes are not in session, the studio is open for visitors to observe glassblowing and view the work of resident artist Paul Swartwood and the other Glassworks instructors.
Meet our Glassworks Team With almost 50 years of combined glassworking experience, our Glassworks teachers have personally guided thousands of people through the exciting process of blowing glass. Our focus is to give each student an in-depth experience of what it’s like to work with molten glass. We work in small groups to step you through the entire process of gathering, shaping, and blowing glass in our 2000° furnaces. Paul Swartwood, Resident Artist/Director Paul was first introduced to blown glass in 2000 at Salisbury University, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2002. After working as a team leader at Simon Pearce Glass in West Chester, PA, Paul moved back to Maryland and discovered his love for teaching all levels of Glassblowing to whomever may want to learn. Paul has taught and demonstrated in many studios over the last 20 years, but Glen Echo Park will always be his home base. Philip Valencia, Glassworks Faculty With a fantastic enthusiasm for teaching, Phil draws in students with his immediate energy. Teaching all levels of students, he masterfully guides everyone through the many steps needed to experience the material. When he’s not teaching, you can see Phil at a wide variety of venues, demonstrating and entertaining the crowd with his passion for glass.
PAUL SWARTWOOD
Ian Kessler-Gowell, Glassworks Faculty Ian Kessler-Gowell grew up in Falls Church, VA. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA where he earned a B.F.A. in glass. music, dance and drama from around the world and across the ages throughout Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Our mission is to create community through celebration. Revels uses performance, education, and community engagement to revive, sustain, expand, and celebrate cultural traditions — in music, dance, storytelling, and drama — that bind people together in spirit and joy. We strive to illustrate the world’s common humanity, connecting all people in a community that stretches across ethnic, cultural, and religious divisions, and through time. Our annual programs include The Christmas Revels, May Revels, a Juneteenth celebration, pub sings, children’s workshops, and four performing ensembles, with many more events throughout the year.
UPCOMING EVENT The Christmas Revels “An American Winter Solstice Celebration” Watch live in person: 8 Performances, December 11-19, 2021 LOCATION: The Spanish Ballroom WATCH ONLINE: Video-on-Demand, December 21, 2021January 6, 2022
Find show times and ticketing information at our website at: revelsdc.org Email: info@revelsdc.org This holiday, join Washington Revels for a homegrown celebration of the Winter Solstice that honors our shared American roots through music, dance, and story. It is December 1870 in Washington, DC, and in the elegant parlor of Senator Hiram Rhodes Revels, the first African American to serve in the U.S. Congress, the household is preparing for a party! Hiram and his wife Phoebe have invited colleagues and friends from near and far to celebrate the season and to look ahead to a new year.
WASHINGTON REVELS
With joyous carols, traditional melodies, heartfelt spirituals and toe-tapping dances, guests from all walks of life meet under the Revels family roof. In the midst of this camaraderie the merrymakers also take care of their Yuletide community — welcoming a traveler with an urgent request, seeking out a lost love, and comforting a melancholy man longing for the joy of the season. Together, all who enter Senator Revels’ home share the hope that long years of national struggle are in the past; remember those who have gone before; and take joy in reunion with loved ones who were separated for many years.
WASHINGTON REVELS
After our own months apart, Washington Revels invites you to ring in the holidays with a Christmas Revels featuring local artists, the Washington Revels Brass and the Washington Revels Jubilee Voices. Whether you revel with us in-person or from the comfort of home, we will celebrate the Winter Solstice in a uniquely American way with the stories, music and traditions that bring us closer — Welcome Yule!

The Sculpture Studio is dedicated to providing the community with the space, materials, tools, and skills to create sculpture and functional art. A committed group of Sculpture Studio artists work regularly at the studio designing and producing contemporary and traditional carved stonework. Introductory and advanced classes in stone carving are offered weekly by sculptor and educator Nizette Brennan. Her professional career includes successful public art commissions, solo exhibits and awards. Isamu Noguchi, her mentor, said of Nizette’s work: “The growth of her art is tied to an understanding of stone. From direct cutting comes knowledge of the nature of stone, and from this knowledge, the possibilities of its meaning......”
Stone Carving Workshop An Introduction to Stone Carving is an overview of the methods and tools used to create sculpture and functional works of art. Participants will practice their stone carving skills guided by an experienced Sculpture Studio artist. The cost is $37 an hour, not including the carving stone. Glen Echo Park Carousel 100th Anniversary
Spanish Ballroom, Bumper Car Pavilion, and Ballroom Back Room
One of the greater Washington, DC area’s true treasures, the historic Glen Echo Park Dentzel carousel is the Park’s crowning jewel from the amusement park era. Installed at Glen Echo Park in 1921, the canopy and the carved animals were made by the Dentzel Carousel Company of Germantown, Pennsylvania. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it remains a classic example of hand wood carving popular during the early years of the 20th century, and recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. The 20-year restoration of the carousel was completed in 2003, and the carousel building was rehabilitated in 201920 by the National Park Service, with additional funding and support from the State of Maryland and Montgomery County. We completed significant repairs to the carousel’s 1926 WurliTzer band organ in 2011. The carousel is closed for the season, but will reopen on April 30, 2022.

National Park Service
Glen Echo Park 301.320.1400 nps.gov/glec For over a century, Glen Echo Park has welcomed residents of the Greater Washington Area. The park’s history of change, though, has led to tension as Chautauqua dreamers, amusement park thrill seekers, and National Park Service preservationists sought to adapt to the needs of current visitors. This affected not only the architectural styles of the buildings, but also the landscape-everything from walkways to parking lots to lighting. Edward and Edwin Baltzley, in 1891, hoped to entertain and educate the District’s urban populace in a National Chautauqua while preserving the site’s rugged natural beauty. The amusement park owners thrilled visitors with exciting rides. Finally, the National Park Service (NPS) and the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture have collaborated to provide the public with appealing artist studios and arts spaces while preserving the Park’s diverse history. NPS works closely with the Partnership to preserve the cultural resources at Glen Echo Park. Over the years, this has involved determining whether to preserve, rehabilitate, restore, or reconstruct historic structures. After 130 years, all that remains from the Baltzleys’ Chautauqua of 1891 is a solitary stone tower which is now the restored stone tower, home to the Stone Tower Gallery and artists’ studio. But their idea of a premier green space where visitors could refresh and restore themselves has thrived as a vibrant cultural community to this day.

Follow the inspiring story of the community’s efforts after the amusement park closed to raise money to save the carousel for future generations. And, finally, learn how the National Park Service, with donated funds, has restored the carousel to its original glory.

We will learn of the heyday of the amusement park during the streetcar era, the closing of the amusement park in the sixties and the efforts to save the carousel and bring the park into the National Park System in the 1970s. We will also see pictures of the beautiful carousel animals carved by William Dentzel’s carousel company that have now all been carefully restored.

She was the driving force of the American Red Cross for 23 years. Her leadership gave the organization a solid reputation that garnered support and trust. Her influence led to the creation of programs that continue to benefit and support people in need today. Clara Barton – Red Cross Angel, a Virtual Performance by Actress Mary Ann Jung
Interpretive Programs Virtual Presentations about Clara Barton National Historic Site
December 4, 3:00 p.m. Clara Barton was a humanitarian, teacher, Civil War nurse, organizer of supplies, and the founder of the American Red Cross. But, did you know that she was also a woman full of wit, intelligence and conviction? Or that she rode a horse, skirted bullets, traveled oceans, and used cosmetics and hair dye? Award-winning Actress Mary Ann Jung offers an exciting and personal window into one of history’s most famous people in her one-woman, interactive performance.
National Park Rangers at Clara Barton National Historic Site are now offering free virtual programs to groups of 10 or more. Please contact Park Ranger Kevin Patti at kevin_ patti@nps.gov or 301-320-1410 to book a program. Join us as we commemorate the life and work of Clara Barton, heroine of the Civil War and founder of the American Red Cross, in recognition of her 200th birthday in December 2021. Clara Barton broke through the barriers that so often confined women of the nineteenth century to the domestic sphere and had a long career of public service that touched people all over the world. She was an advocate for the expansion of rights for African Americans and women, a pioneer of public education, and the inventor of the first aid kit. She was also one of the first women to work for the federal government. This illustrated talk by a park ranger at Clara Barton National Historic Site in Glen Echo, Md will use photographs from Clara Barton’s life and times to describe her service and the struggles she overcame along the way.
Clara Barton National Historic Site offers visitors the opportunity to see the actress’s portrayal of Clara Barton at 3:00 p.m. on December 4, 2021. The performance will be shown on the Clara Barton NHS Facebook page. Please call for details, 301-320-1410.
