“A voyage in which every individual can find their own beauty and emotions, for a free natural world that wishes nothing more than to liberate itself from its human hold”

Beyond their familiar sounding names, few amongst us know much about the Poles.

They remain in many minds remote and virtually inaccessible places. However, the passage of man has already left some indelible traces and in our times, as never before, climate change, greed for appropriation for exploitation and anthropogenic uses have left them fragile.

Therefore it is vital that testimonies of experts in the field and nature lovers in general are brought to the attention of the wider public. The reports presented to us by these professionals and passionate explorers are essential insights to expose the mutations inflicted by human activity, which are unfortunately accelerating at an ever increasing speed.

“The protection of the Poles demands a full engagement of us all and this work can contribute to a great extend

Knowledgeable photographer Christian Clauwers is one of those explorers, and through this testimony he projects us into this polar universe, giving each of his photographs a vision that goes well beyond a frozen moment in time. These freeze-frames leave room for imagination and lead us into a voyage in which every individual can find their own beauty and emotions, for a free natural world that wishes nothing more than to liberate itself from its human hold.

Every photograph ceases to be just a cliche and instead becomes a canvas of discovery that enhances our understanding. This is a commitment and a process which is very much part of the ambition and the mission of Centre National de la mer, Nausicaá.

Let us accept and insist that these areas can conserve their natural immunity. The protection of the Poles demands a full engagement of us all and this work can contribute to a great extent.

Let us therefore bear in mind that the more we want to liberate ourselves from nature, the more vulnerable we become ourselves … what do we need conquests for .. in these polar regions which are like the oceans, common goods of humanity to be preserved.

We thank Christian Clauwers for offering us this testimony. l Dominique Godefroy Chairman and CEO of Nausicaá Director of IFREMER Manche Mer du Nord.
