Into the For centuries, one colour has defned Greek style and this season the country’s leading designers are using it to great efect, Elle Blakeman reports

PHOTO: CHrisTOs THeOlOglOu

In Greece, there is a colour that not only defnes the land, but is deeply entwined with its history and culture. The uplifting shade of blue is today synonymous with the beautiful islands, matching the clear sky and lapping Mediterranean sea surrounding them. This colour was originally believed to ward of evil and was therefore used to decorate windows, doors, walls, staircases and fences in a bid to head of the approach of bad spirits, and samaria – blue ‘belts’ –

S H O P | 27

were painted around buildings. Cupolas – the small dome-like structures at the very top of Catholic churches – would be painted in bright sky blue and are now an iconic feature of Greece. From these superstitious beginnings, the colour has gone on to become the shade that is most associated with Greek style. In art, highly revered pieces were painted with the expensive gemstone lapis lazuli, the dress of the Madonna would always be the brightest shade of blue that materials allowed for, while statues of heroes, such as the one of Zeus in Olympia, had eyes of turquoise added to them. The Greeks then started to wear jewellery made with turquoise stones, such as the ‘evil eye’, which is still a popular souvenir for visitors to the country.

blue

28 | F E AT U R E S

It is no surprise then, that Greece’s fashion designers will often look to this historically important colour when designing their collections. The aquatic shade fts perfectly with the country’s traditionally fuid shapes and materials, and while blue is often associated with summer, in Greece it works well year-round. ‘Grecian blue is a timeless and an any-season shade which is why people choose to wear it again and again,’ explains international stylist Anna Woodham whose clients have included the London department store Selfridges and asos.com. Athens-based designer Samantha Sotos is known for her elegant, fowing shapes and use of colour. Originally from Australia, she combines relaxed Antipodean style with the glamorous clean lines of Greek and European tradition, and her collections are peppered with long, graceful dresses and fgure-hugging draped tops and matching skirts. She has embraced the shade of her adopted country with gusto: hues of peacock, electric blue and navy all make a regular appearance in her collections, while her headpieces, such as the recent Bird of Paradise fascinator, featuring two entwined shades of blue, can be seen as a nod to the ancient accessories of Greece and as a modern talisman for the superstitious. Meanwhile, Ioanna Kourbela is making waves at home and abroad with her stunning, easy-towear designs. Her family has been 60 /

producing handmade knitwear since 1971 and her collections retain the minimal aesthetic favoured by her relatives. Kourbela’s pieces are beautiful homages to the textile traditions of Greece – fabrics such as cotton, linen, wool and silk are dyed in natural shades of stone, white and blue, giving a light and airy look, and all designs are kept modern through the use of laser cutting and fowing fabrics. When seeking dramatic-looking eveningwear, style leaders including Kate Moss and Carla Bruni have turned to Athens-born designer Vassilios Kostetsos. Sea green, sky blue and golden yellow are used to great efect on everything from ftted suits to draped foor-length gowns. But don’t let the draping fool you – this is no throwback to ancient Greece, but a modern spin on traditional ideas: gowns are split up to the thigh or down to the navel, huge batwing sleeves are pulled in with ruched corsetry, and netted skirts reveal bright, high-waisted underwear. For an equally opulent, yet slightly more wearable aesthetic, consider an item by famed couture designer Makis Tselios. His fattering, feminine aesthetic often favours shades of blue, from Gatsbylike suits in chic, powdery grey hues to foor-length lace and silk dresses in seductive creamy cerulean, fnished with several strings of pearls. And it’s not just women’s clothing that is bursting with Greece’s frst colour. Menswear designer Nikos Apostolopoulos never fails to include the shade in his collec-

tions, and his most popular wedding suits are a very ftted version in a cool metallic blue, and a suave, looser style in powder blue. Meanwhile, Sotiris Georgiou has plumped for a navy shade this season which he has added to long, boxy jackets and to structured trousers fnished with a bold fash of leather. From fowing goddess gowns to the sculptural domes of Athens and Thessaloniki, the country’s saturated shade is one that transcends trends samanthasotos.com, ioannakourbela.com, kostetsos.com, makistselios.gr, nikosapostolopoulos.gr, sotirisgeorgiou.com

When it comes to dressing for the journey, Louis Vuitton’s Icons capsule collection is a good place to start. This season the regularly updated line is inspired by the style of the French architect and designer Charlotte Perriand, who combined utility with beauty. Capes – which were classic accessories during the golden age of travel in the early 20th century – are enjoying a renaissance, and among the Icons clothing items for autumn and winter are woollen ponchos, as well as reversible check coats with camel interiors. For fat shoes, among the best options are horsebit loafers from Gucci or Tod’s. And if you’re

preparing for a long-haul fight, Madeleine Thompson – who divides her time between London and Hong Kong – has created luxurious travel slippers in cashmere. In fact, she has thought about everything to make the journey as enjoyable as possible, with a range that includes pyjamas and a blanket, both in cashmere, an eye mask and, best of all, a cashmere and silk pillowcase which will no doubt improve the comfort of the pillow provided by your airline. Penny Klein and Heidi Gosman, the stylish duo behind go-to swimwear label Heidi Klein, are no strangers to international travel (the label’s resort 2015 campaign was shot in the British Virgin Islands). The women’s advice to those who will be enjoying the sun this season is to pack two reversible bikinis (such as Heidi Klein’s São Paulo and Jaipur designs) and mix and match them. The sandals from Ancient Greek Sandals, a breakout brand set up by Christina Martini, the former Balenciaga and Louis Vuitton accessories designer, have been seen on the feet of women including Jessica Alba and Candice Swanepoel. The label’s shoes are all handmade in Greece and can be hot stamped with your initials. To help plan your visit, if you’re not having a digital detox, Martini recommends the app Like a Local, which has been given fve stars by Mashable, a leading technology website. ‘It helps avoid tourist traps and allows you to discover hidden gems,’ she says.

The jet-setting South African luxury jewellery designer Kirsten Goss can never aford to be ofgrid for long and relies on the Monster Powercard, a portable device for recharging iPhones and iPads. ‘It’s got an unbelievable level of power and has got me out of too many sticky situations,’ she laughs. And fnally, we turn to the suitcase. The traditionalist’s choice would be an item from the British company Globe-Trotter, whose pieces are handmade to order in England and are crafted from vulcanised fbreboard. If in London, take time to visit the company’s recently launched fagship store in Mayfair where you can view its new Albemarle collection in caramel and red leather which is exclusive to the store. For something thoroughly contemporary, consider the multi-wheel Rimowa Titanium.

Goss bought a set of three of these cases some 10 years ago: ‘They have been bashed, thrown and hauled around the world and still see me through,’ she maintains. Perhaps the ultimate in luxury travel accessories is an innovation from Moynat. Conceived in Paris by Pauline Moynat in 1849, these custom-made trunks ft the contours of a car’s boot and can be colour matched with the vehicle’s exterior. The company’s new artistic director, Ramesh Nair, is a former Hermès designer, so look out for re-imaginings of these must-have items. With these tips for a stylish and comfortable trip, a bon voyage is undoubtedly assured louisvuitton.com, heidiklein.com, madeleine-thompson.com, ancient-greek-sandals.com, globetrotter1897.com, moynat.com

MY CITY: OrsAlIA PArThENIs Orsalia Parthenis heads up the Greek womenswear label founded by her father. The brand’s refned and timeless bohemian designs have remained popular for over four decades. here, Orsalia guides Hannah Lewis around some of her favourite places in Athens orsalia-parthenis.gr ‘I was born in Athens and today I live in Philopappou, near the Dora stratou dance theatre. I love this area because it is surrounded by trees, you can see the sea and it has the energy of the ancient city, but you are also near the cool bars and restaurants. ‘If asked to select my favourite stores, there is Minas on Emmanouil Benaki with one-of jewellery and design objects, and Two Is Company which is great for luxury custom-made furniture and

Papadakis specialises in Greek gourmet dishes and fresh fsh. Ta Souvlakia Tou Kyr Kosta at Plateia Agias Irinis does the best spicy souvlaki in Athens and Takis Bakery on Misaraliotou street is by far the leading bakery. Nice ’n’ Easy, next to my shop in Kolonaki, does really good organic dishes and great breakfasts and cofee. Translations РУССКИЙ ПЕРЕВОД 26: Into The Blue

globalblue.com

30: Good To Go

Speedy, Alma
