or decades Portugal has been a pioneer in environmental matters. The nation’s capital, in particular, is at the forefront of green innovation; Lisbon was one of the first European cities to sign the 2016 New Covenant of Mayors for Climate Change and Energy, after halving carbon emissions and reducing energy and water consumption. With the city awarded the title of European Green Capital for 2020, today Portugal is flying its green flag high. In a recent article in the Portugal News, the country’s largest English language newspaper, José Sá Fernandes, council officer for the environment, explained that Lisbon won the award not so much for being a sustainable city but because of its ability to adapt and evolve in a green way. Lisbon is the city, he said, that most developed ‘all environmental parameters ‒ energy, water, mobility, waste and green infrastructure and biodiversity’. Indeed, Lisbon cleans

Com a cidade nomeada Capital Verde Europeia para 2020, Portugal prospera a nível ecológico. Num artigo recente no Portugal News, o maior jornal de língua inglesa, José Sá Fernandes, vereador do ambiente, explicou que Lisboa ganhou a distinção de cidade sustentável pela sua capacidade de se adaptar e evoluir de uma forma ecológica. Lisboa é a cidade que, segundo ele, mais evolui em todos os parâmetros verdes – energia, água, mobilidade, resíduos e biodiversidade’. its streets with recycled treated water and is increasingly using such waste water in public gardens. It aims to be 100% carbon neutral by 2050. To kick off Lisbon’s year as European Green Capital – and to improve the overall quality of life in the city – in January local residents planted more than 20,000 trees across Portugal’s capital. It was the start of a programme of exciting green events and exhibitions that will appeal quite as much to visitors as to Lisboetas. One of the highlights is an art installation at Oceanário de Lisboa called One – the ocean as you never felt it. This offers a sensory experience, taking visitors on an immersive journey to explore man’s relationship with the sea and consider the ways we can preserve the underwater world. Getting to the exhibition and around the city is an ever more green activity. Lisbon encourages sustainable urban mobility, promoting cycling and walking as well as public transport, and it also boasts one of the world’s largest networks of electric vehicle charging

stations. In 2017 the city launched a bike sharing scheme, with electric bikes forming a big part of the fleet and offering a pleasing way to tackle the hilly streets. Sustainability is not only the preserve of modern times; it underlies one of Portugal’s most famous industries, cork production. Harvesting cork is a painstaking and centuries-old tradition; the material is carefully carved from the outer layers of cork oak trees without harming them. The Amorim Group, a familyowned business with a history in the cork industry dating back to 1870, is the largest producer and supplier of cork stoppers worldwide.
