worthy pieces of the utmost luxury, and these Imperiale earrings are exactly that. The purple of these precious gems symbolises majesty and the colour has been a symbol of royalty since Byzantine times. Set in 18-carat gold, the earrings feature rose gold lacework inspired by the embroidery of the fnest ancient textiles, on which historic monarchs would inscribe their insignia. Exquisite enough for the most exclusive of occasions, the collection includes a matching ring to complete the look. hl Chopard Imperiale earrings, €8,300, Chopard, Kurfürstendamm 186-187, 10707 Berlin, +49 (0)30 7009 6980, chopard.com * for map go to page 84

MAKING HISTORY The Heer family business began in 1907 when Benedikt Heer opened a saddlery in Lucerne, Switzerland. As well as being respected for its saddles, the company became known for its exceptional horsehair mattresses which were made to order for exclusive clients. Today, Benedikt’s great-grandson Daniel is at the helm, and he can be found making the company’s items, using the traditional methods employed by his ancestors, in the Manufaktur Heer store and workshop on Rosa-LuxemburgSave up to 14.5% by shopping tax free, see page 103
Strasse. Mattresses still form part of the range of products, and leather goods are also crafted. Daniel Heer makes his bags using specially selected hides from Germany and the UK, with each item outwardly displaying the stitching and exposed cut lines that would be seen on a traditionally made saddle. For a unique piece of manufacturing heritage, this is an ideal place to visit. hl Manufaktur Heer, Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse 26, 10178 Berlin, +49 (0)30 3408 5194, danielheer.com

From bright luxury sportswear to creations in leather and lace, Berlin’s after-dark fashions are as alluring as the city’s nightlife, Sally McIlhone discovers
till dawn The glamour of Berlin has always been that much more dramatic after nightfall. In the 1930s, author Christopher Isherwood described decadent, cabaret-flled evenings and today the city is reputed to be the clubbing capital of the world. Berlin’s fashion designers recognise that locals and visitors want to dress for the wide variety of nightlife available: whether you’re trying to charm your way into the ultra exclusive Berghain nightclub or are heading for cocktails at Das Stue, recently voted one of the best new bars in the world by Condé Nast Traveller, there is a Berlin brand with an impeccable outft just for you. The city’s relaxed atmosphere inspires Lala Berlin’s designer Leyla Piedayesh. ‘It’s the feeling of freedom that you have in Berlin, especially at night,’ she says. ‘There are no

rules. This feeling of freedom is what inspires me every day.’ The label’s latest collection aptly displays this afnity for nonconformity, combining seemingly disparate pieces to create an edgy take on refned eveningwear. Lace panelled minidresses worn over PVC leggings and topped of with a silver blazer ofer a sophisticated take on modern androgyny. Elsewhere a paint-splatter print is applied to loose trousers and panelled crop tops, leggings feature bold word-prints and mannish overcoats are draped over models’ shoulders. These are ideal outfts to wear when queuing to get into the city’s most exclusive nightclubs, ofering the option of warmth, while still allowing the wearer to bare a hint of skin. Piedayesh believes the buzz of Berlin’s nightlife is down to the blend of people and fashion. ‘It’s very special,’ she says. ‘People mix all types of

looks, and combine vintage with modern. When I think of Berlin’s nightlife, it’s Kater Holzig or Bar 25 that come into my mind, along with feathers, hats, colours and fun, a little bit like in a cabaret.’ Isherwood would be thrilled to hear that the spirit of 1930s Berlin that he captured in his stories is still alive and well in the city’s elite clubs. Kater Holzig and Bar 25, both located close to the Spree, were famed for their parties, which went on for days at a time. Though both have now closed, whispers of a new nightspot from the creators of these legendary clubs are circulating the city like wildfre. If it should open, Lala Berlin’s layered looks will be the perfect attire, and will ensure that you are ushered straight in to join the party. Berghain is another Berlin nightclub with a reputation that precedes it. Known for being one of the world’s most impenetrable nocturnal fortresses, the internet is rife with advice on how to dress to get past the notorious head bouncer, Sven. The focus is on the music.’ If you prefer to sup a cocktail in an elite nightspot that evokes the atmosphere of Isherwood’s heyday, Das Stue is the place for you. Germany’s cities are among the leading places in the world for modern retail, with stunning glass shopping centres ofering the latest fashion designs. But the country is also rightly famous for its traditional winter markets, which have been providing seasonal delights for centuries – it is thought that the frst market was held in Saxony in the 1300s. Modern Berlin, with its cutting-edge credentials, turns into a winter wonderland towards the end of the year, with an impressive selection of markets. Some, such as those at Gendarmenmarkt and Potsdamer Platz, are situated in key shopping areas while others are more intimate and focus on handicrafts and home-made food. The charming Nostalgischer Weihnachsmarkt (Nostalgic Christmas Market) at the Opernpalais boasts a range of pretty craft items, from cosy scarves to painted baubles and other decorations, while brandy

Porsche Design is responsible for a wide range of desirable pieces, ranging from clothing to luxury luggage to standout smartphones. Ruairidh Pritchard visits the German label Fashion and functionality are sometimes mutually exclusive: in many cases, they can be polar opposites. However when it comes to design that is practical as well as beautiful, the Germans are experts. Buying German has been a priority for many car lovers for decades, with Porsche being the go-to sports model for motor enthusiasts the world over.
More recently, Porsche’s line of clothing and accessories has brought fashionable consumers around to the idea of buying German. The collection was introduced in 1972 by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the founder of the renowned car. Speaking about why the Engineered Leather range stands out, Dr Juergen Gessler, Porsche Design’s CEO, says, ‘It creates an uncompromising link between functionality and aesthetics and fts seamlessly into our product portfolio. Our concept remains unchanged: we don’t follow trends, we set our own accents. The result is that our version of casual chic makes our fashion collections unique.’ Perhaps the best example of the brand’s seamless combination of functionality and fashion is its signature handbag, the TwinBag. Created using the most exclusive leathers and expertly crafted by artisans in Florence, the TwinBag’s most distinguishing feature is its innovative carrying concept – adjustable
handles which allow the bag to be worn either as a traditional handbag or as a shoulder bag. Each bag is produced from a single piece of leather, which is then expertly stitched by hand. The lining is made from the softest Alcantara material and the metal fttings, including chrome, silver, white gold and rose gold, are fnished using advanced electroplating procedures. This is the perfect combination of Italian craftsmanship and German design. Structured but not constructed. Casual and
formal at the same time. In particular, we have used the latest techniques of materials development for the production of familiar and yet forward-looking cuts.’ Four decades after its creation, it’s clear that Porsche Design still follows the design principles set by its founder, who maintained that ‘if you analyse the function of an object, its form often becomes obvious’. Jewish Museum Daniel Libeskind’s emotive design provides a suitably remarkable setting for the Jewish Museum. Germany’s history with its Jewish community is documented through a permanent exhibition that chronicles the overall experience as well as telling individual stories. The museum’s collection includes a wide range of artefacts, historic texts and paintings, ranging from historic posters to traditional religious candlesticks and other idols. Be sure to visit the temporary ‘bios[torah]’ installation demonstrating how robot technology can be used to write the script of the Torah. MY CITY: FLORIAN KOLMER From exploring the London fashion scene to plastering the streets of Berlin with posters of his work, Florian Kolmer has had a varied and exciting career as a photographer. Now focusing on portraiture, his portfolio includes fashion campaigns and backstage catwalk images. Although well travelled, Florian’s heart belongs in Berlin. Here he tells Ximena Daneri why foriankolmer.com

I head to Café CK on Marienburger Strasse – my friend Cory, who runs the place, is a cofee–tasting champion. I go to Grill Royal * p.90, when there has to be a big piece of meat on the plate. ‘For a night-time gin and tonic I like to visit the Neue Odessa Bar or Amano Bar, while King Size Bar is a very good place

‘I was born in Berlin and live in the east ofthe city – I think Berlin is the best place to live. ‘Apartment is a favourite store: from the outside it looks like an empty gallery space, but it is hiding one of the city’s leading multilabel stores in the basement. I think that Andreas Murkudis has the best selection of brands, while Esther Perbandt is a cosy store on Almstadtstrasse, where Esther sells her own cutting-edge fashion label. ‘One of my favourite restaurants in Berlin is 3 Minutes sur Mer – a bistro next to a gourmet restaurant, Bandole sur Mer, from the same owner. It has reasonably priced dishes, a good wine selection and supreme entrecôte. ‘Mogg & Melzer is a deli and bistro, right next to the fancy Pauly Saal, with a kosher menu and the best pastrami in town. ‘When it’s time for my morning cofee,

‘I love the Helmut Newton Museum which includes many of the photographer’s personal items, so it also tells the story of the man behind the camera. ‘My top tip is to look away from the tourist trail and check out a cocktail bar in Schöneberg or perhaps go to one of the horse races in Hoppegarten.’

for celebrations – it’s the most glamorous shoe-box-sized bar in the world. ‘Museumsinsel * p.91 provides the biggest dose of culture I can get in the world, and the Neue National Galerie has the most spectacular exhibitions; designed by Mies van der Rohe, the building itself is worth looking at.

И эта компания своим опытом последовательно подтверждает: форма должна быть не только функциональной, но и красивой. porsche-design.com 103: When You Shop The World, Shop Tax Free

visitberlin.de, tourismus.nuernberg.de, duesseldorf-tourismus.de

porsche-design.com

COOL QUILTING German designer Karl Lagerfeld is never seen in anything but monochrome, and his black suits and ties form a signature look that makes him instantly recognisable. The creative director at Chanel and Fendi, Lagerfeld also runs his own eponymous label and, unsurprisingly, its latest accessories collection revels in the colour black. Part of the K/Kuilted range, this mini handbag may look simple at frst glance yet is anything but. Quilting adds an interesting dimension to the design, while on closer inspection the chain handle is globalblue.com
revealed to be made up of studded rings. This is a clever and edgy creation from one of the world’s greatest designers. While visiting his Berlin boutique, make sure to explore the interactive elements. As keen on technology as he is on the colour black, Lagerfeld equips each of his stores with tablets, allowing visitors to browse his wares online, watch footage of fashion shows, take pictures of themselves in their purchases, and even leave messages for the man himself. hl Karl Lagerfeld K/Kuilted handbag, €425, Karl Lagerfeld, Neue Schönhauser Strasse 8, 10178 Berlin, +49 (0)30 2809 6590, karl.com * for map go to page 94
