The label was launched in 1987, ofering minimalist-chic looks that made a strong contrast to the bold style of the time. russels has carved out a unique place in the world of art. Since the mid 1990s, the city’s galleries have worked hard to promote the Belgian capital not only as an international art destination but also as a venue with an impressive amount of home-grown talent. In Paris a great deal of art is sold but not made; in Berlin the reverse is the case. Brussels offers the best of both worlds. This is largely thanks to a combination of accessible property prices, which attract working artists, and high-speed rail links to London and Paris, which ensure 70 81

managing director of Art Brussels, the city’s annual contemporary art fair. ‘Belgian collectors are known to be very thoughtful about their collections,’ she explains. They often have a close relationship with artists and dare to buy in an early stage of a painter’s or sculptor’s career, she adds. The result is a unique demographic of European collectors. Having settled in Brussels they organise exhibitions involving their own collections, and these are often held in private locations that they open to the public. contemporary art centre is remarkable for showcasing some of the best-received modern art in the city and for its investment in emerging artists, to whom it offers residencies each year. It is housed in a former brewery that was created in the 1930s by Belgian architect Adrien Blomme, and there’s a period, industrial feel here, especially in the Brewing Hall exhibition space, which features three original copper tuns. Vierstraete explains that Wiels has ‘contributed a lot to the dynamics and the internationalisation of the contemporary art scene in Brussels through opening its doors to artists-in-residence’. She explains that many of them choose to continue living in Brussels after having been hosted for several

months – and the result is a constant injection of international talent into the city. A flamboyant art fair has also started making a bold contribution to the city. Independent is a series of international events devised by

visitors might at first feel a bit daunted by taking it in. But Brussels is very human in scale, says Vierstraete, ‘so everything related to the art scene is concentrated in a few areas of town’. This includes the Ixelles and Dansaert districts. The city’s temporary shows tend to be spectacularly located yet easily accessible. This was especially the case with the

gallery owners. Its shows have been taking place in New York and Delhi since 2010, and earlier this year it held its first European fair in the 1930s Vanderborght building in Brussels. Works from some 60 galleries were featured, and what distinguished the fair was the way in which the exhibitors were orchestrated. The shows do away with the gallery hierarchy that characterises so many art fairs and instead position small names and projects alongside bigger, more established ones. It’s a pluralistic approach that resonates well with the Brussels art scene of today. The city offers such a wealth of contemporary art experiences that

The fair took place in April at the Tour & Taxis complex, an architectural masterpiece of historic warehouses to the north of the centre, just 10 minutes’ walk from the Gare du Nord. Vierstraete explains that this vibrant annual event – next year’s takes place from 21 to 23 April – is designed to attract not only artists and gallery owners but also the public, encouraging those curious about art to see as much work as possible ‘in order to adjust both your eyes and your mind to the kind of art that means something to you’. In Brussels, a veritable playground of artistic creation, you would be hard pushed not to

T

here’s an intellectual air to Stephan Schneider’s considered but effortless aesthetic. Perhaps this stems from his impressive experience. The designer rose to prominence in the mid 1990s, when the Antwerp Six collective was at its height. Not one 72 80

for avant-garde trends, he regards himself as a clothes designer rather than a fashion maverick. ‘I design real clothes for real people,’ notes the German-born alumnus of Antwerp’s prestigious Royal Academy of Fine Arts. ‘It’s quite a good position to be in, as it’s Left: Stephan Schneider’s Fragments of a Home women’s collection, autumn/winter 2016/17

difficult to remain relevant and survive on trend-focused collections.’ Yet Schneider concedes one potentially negative aspect to this ethos – the risk of abandoning fantasy. ‘You should always respect people’s practical needs, but you mustn’t step out of your ivory tower for good,’ he asserts firmly. ‘If your creativity doesn’t involve dreams you’re making confection, not fashion.’ Clean as his cut might be, there’s an inherent softness to Schneider’s wearable silhouettes. Shirts and jackets often feature dolman sleeves, while collars are constructed to fall into place rather than being rigidly forced into position. and jackets, have become something of a signature. To give his tailoring a sense of modernity, Schneider recently developed a cut devoid of shoulder seams. ‘I deleted the seams in order to get as far away as possible from that strict 90s silhouette, while at the same avoiding the oversized, bohemian look,’ he explains. house, layering dark blue paint on top of classic sunrises so as to create a moody, mystical atmosphere of the night. It’s a very personal collection.’ Schneider has always embraced the idea of genderless fashion, and given that this look is currently sweeping the industry he’s been well ahead of his time. ‘I don’t think in terms of gender when I design – my men’s and women’s lines go hand in hand,’ he says. He doesn’t tell seamstresses if the pieces they’re about to sew are for a man or a woman, and with good reason. ‘It’s peculiar, but as soon as you say it’s a ladies garment, the quality tends to be downgraded automatically,’ he explains. ‘I want my female customers to get the same quality cotton pocket bags as men expect – why would they have to

He thought that women would love the practicality of it, but, he says, ‘I had to scrap it since many complained it added bulk to the garment.’

that of the shopping. ‘The retailers take pride in their businesses, as shopping is important to locals,’ he observes. ‘Flemish people value quality and tend to spend a lot on fashion. They may live quite simply, but many are happy to pay €1,000 for, say, a new Ann Demeulemeester suit. Even students wear designer clothing.’ Schneider says that you’ll find everything you could possibly want in Antwerp, from Céline handbags to Swedish sportswear pieces. ‘The rents are affordable in Antwerp and this makes the shopping terrain democratic and diverse,’ he says. ‘You won’t find marginal designers rubbing shoulders with heavyweights such as Dries Van Noten in many other fashion hotspots.’

The label’s only store, which is located on Reyndersstraat in the heart of Antwerp, is an intimate place that brings to mind a walk-in art installation, its cubist wooden staircase making for a Duchampesque centrepiece. Though the mildly conceptual air of it will make fashion mavens’ hearts flutter, Schneider’s intentions are far from lofty. ‘The shop has remained unchanged since I opened it in 1996. I want to convey the same feeling you might get from a butcher or a bakery – a neighbourhood spot that is familiar and cosy.’ Schneider speaks highly of his adopted city, describing the vibe of Antwerp as a charming mix of German and French cultures in which the quality of life is as high as

Шнайдер наделяет одежду внутренней чистотой и мягкостью. У его рубашек и пиджаков часто появляются рукава «летучая мышь», а воротники мягко уложены, а не держат жесткую форму. Фирменным знаком для этих моделей стали неброские, но акцентированные горизонтальные карманы. Чтобы подчеркнуть современный подход к крою, Шнайдер убрал плечевые
