ROBUST ROMANCE Americana meets English romanticism in this season’s Claudie Pierlot collection. CUTTING EDGE This season, G-Star Raw presents a collection that ranges from raw to lightly washed denim, combined with the brand’s signature innovative cuts and details. The cleverly devised pieces for men come in dark and pale fabric and feature panels of stretch material in areas that the body needs to move, such as at the knees and hips. Menswear also includes a reworked camo print that has been mixed with denim, adding indigo to the earthy green palette. From diamonds to sapphires, necklaces to watches, Belgium’s leading jewellers offer the last word in luxury. Hannah Lewis discovers some of the best If you’re looking to pick up a piece of exquisite high-end jewellery, Belgium’s largest cities offer everything you need. Both Antwerp and Brussels present an incredible variety of options when it comes to purchasing the perfect gem or timepiece. As well as boutiques from the most luxurious and respected international names ‒ Bulgari, Cartier, Chopard and Tiffany among many others – Belgium’s local jewellers are absolute must-visits. Their ranges include the best of international high jewellery as well as their own stunning creations, and they stock exquisite timepieces, too. In Brussels and Antwerp there is something to please every jewellery lover. Antwerp’s diamond district (also known as the Diamantkwartier) is one the largest centres of the most dazzling precious stones on the 62 72

65

planet; diamond trading here is valued at a staggering €42 billion annually. In the heart of the district is Diamondland, which at more than 1,000 square metres is the biggest diamond showroom in the city. Visitors travel from across the world to join its outstanding tours, which guide them through Antwerp’s 400 years of history in diamonds and provide a unique look at diamond polishers and goldsmiths at work. Led by experts, guests can see world-famous diamonds up close and explore the centre’s vast array of top-quality diamonds and diamond jewellery. They will also learn about the importance of the diamond trade’s four Cs: cut, colour, clarity and carat. At Diamondland, visitors can purchase loose diamonds, select Opposite: a ring created by Slaets of Antwerp

from the large collection of beautiful jewellery, or even pick their own diamond and setting and have an expert goldsmith create their piece. But how does one approach buying a diamond? ‘First of all, know where you buy,’ says manager Florence Mesman. She recommends that visitors seek out jewellers, such as Diamondland, which have been selected for the Antwerp’s Most Brilliant label; at these stores, she says, visitors can make purchases

with confidence. The other crucial pointer of hers is to ask the expert staff for advice. ‘Our role is to help you to find the perfect diamond or piece of jewellery that you will enjoy forever,’ Mesman says. ‘Keep an open mind. Maybe you have a specific idea of what you would like to purchase, but maybe you will end up with something completely different.’ Of course, diamonds are not the only gems worth buying. At De Greef, a family jeweller based in Brussels, emeralds, sapphires, pearls and many other precious stones adorn the in-house jewellery collection. Arnaud Wittmann is the creative mind behind these designs. He focuses on protecting the traditions and crafts of goldsmithing but is able to balance these ideals with new ideas and trends. His jewellery is typified by bold shapes, silhouettes and colours, and also by the use of truly luxurious stones and metals. Book ahead to discuss a bespoke creation. If it’s a watch you’re looking for,

Arnaud’s brother Jacques is the man for you. Passionate about great timepieces, he frequently travels to leading Swiss and German workshops to make sure the De Greef collection features only the best and most exciting models. Expect world leaders in the field here, such as Patek Philippe, IWC Schaffhausen, JaegerLeCoultre and more. Another watch specialist in Brussels is Yvan’s Jewellers, which opened in 1956 as the first Belgian retailer of prestigious Rolex watches. Now in the hands of the founder’s son, the family business retains a strong focus on watches, representing leading brands from across the world. Luxury timepieces by Breguet, Chanel, Omega, Vacheron Constantin and, of course, Rolex can all be found in this charming boutique in the beautiful Galerie de la Reine. The team has also developed its own capsule collection of high jewellery, comprising rings and earrings.

The style is supremely elegant and classic; coloured gems add a modern feel to some pieces while others are kept simple to highlight the timeless appeal of gold and diamonds. With more than 100 years of experience in the field, Slaets is one of Antwerp’s most trusted watch and jewellery purveyors. Originally a timepiece specialist, this family business expanded to offer fine jewellery in the late 1940s, and over the years Slaets has connected with the most exciting and luxurious brands across the world. It was the first jeweller outside Italy to represent Pomellato. Today, Slaets offers fine jewellery by a roster of leading brands including Piaget, Chopard and

Annamaria Cammilli, and it also creates its own beautiful pieces; highlights of the in-house collection include rings, earrings and pendants set with rare brown diamonds. Its selection of watches features the most prestigious brand names today, including pieces by long-time partners Cartier, Chopard, Breitling and Piaget, all of whom created limited-edition pieces in 2004 to celebrate the company’s centenary. And if that’s not a seal of approval from the world of watchmaking, we don’t know what is. Indeed, from Slaets and Diamondworld in Antwerp to Yvan’s in Brussels, Belgian jewellers are endorsed as being among the very best in the world

teeped in history, Antwerp is a remarkable place. It is renowned for its magnificent architecture and art, and in 1993 was one of the first cities to be designated European Capital of Culture. Yet behind its centuries-old façades, Antwerp is home to an altogether modern shopping movement. Concept stores have long been important in its standing in the fashion world and are expressive of the city’s tremendous spirit of contemporary creativity. Its most striking boutiques are far more than simply a stage for shopping transactions; with their innovative 67

designs and carefully curated product ranges they offer complex and captivating experiences. One of Antwerp’s most established concept stores is Your. Set just off the east bank of the Scheldt river, on Kloosterstraat in the vibrant antiques district, Your is home to a mix of homeware, fashion and beauty products. Along with Komono sunglasses, Kikkerland gadgets and Malin and Goetz fragrances, there is an impressive range of trend-leading sports- and streetwear-inspired fashion brands including Adidas, C P Company, Fred Perry and Native Youth. Antwerp is full of historic appeal yet also offers some of the most creative shopping experiences in Europe. Ruairidh Pritchard takes a tour of the city’s most exciting boutiques contrast to the art nouveau furniture, Renaissance-era artworks and turn-of-the-century pieces in the surrounding stores. The boutique’s staff members are dedicated to offering personalised assistance and have a focus on providing what they proudly describe as ‘a unique and exciting shopping experience where the customer is king’. Another of Antwerp’s leading boutiques is St Vincents. Set in a former print house on the city’s Kleine Markt, St Vincents pushes the idea of the concept store to new heights; it doesn’t call itself as a store so much as an ‘ever-changing space Above: St Vincents café

dedicated to niche and established designers, creatives and artisans’. Owners Henri Delbarrre and Geraldine Jackman respectively gave up careers as an economist and a tax lawyer in order to create this beautifully pared-back space that now exudes a restrained sense of luxury. After a complete renovation of the building, Delbarre and Jackman started work on one of the city’s most refined and best curated selections of products for home, office and wardrobe. Standout pieces include apparel by Swedish utilitarian fashion leaders Uniforms for the Dedicated, perfumes from French fragrance

brand Le Labo and design items by Antwerp-based architect Vincent Van Duysen. Aside from the amazing array of products, St Vincents is home to one of Antwerp’s best loved cafés; artisanal coffees, teas and a selection of baked goods have made this a favourite spot of the city’s creative crowd. Additionally, a gallery exhibits pieces by rising stars of the Belgian art scene. One of the best examples of Antwerp’s new generation of genre-redefining concept stores is Graanmarkt 13, located in the hip east end of the city’s popular De Wilde Zee shopping district. Founders Tim Van Geloven and Ilse Cornelissens describe it as ‘a restaurant, a shop, a place to enjoy design, fashion, art, culture and gastronomic delights’. The building’s three floors have been devised as an extension of the couple’s own home and way of life. This includes, in their words, ‘an independent sense of beauty’ and a focus on ‘supporting craftsmanship and sustainability’. The space was designed by Vincent Van Duysen, who thinks of Graanmarkt 13 as ‘a collection of curiosities where each and every floor tells a story. It’s an idea, but also a sensory location that keeps on evolving as it grows’. In re-designing the building, which dates back to the 19th century, Van Duysen kept the historic façade but rearranged the interior for different activities on different levels. A tone of comfortable luxury is set on the ground floor, which is home to a stylish shop offering a

selection of high-end designer pieces from labels including Marni, Lemaire, Isabel Marant and MSGM. The first floor is a striking gallery space with changing exhibitions. Across the top floor is a luxury apartment that can be rented for long or short stays, with hotel-like service included. The lower ground floor restaurant, run by acclaimed chef Seppe Nobels, is not to be missed. The menu offers dishes lovingly

crafted from locally sourced fresh ingredients and garden herbs. Some plates even feature Graanmarkt 13’s honey from its own rooftop hives. Such a sense of innovation and creativity is part of the vibe of the city that many regard as Belgium’s capital of cool. And with its leading boutiques offering concepts that elevate shopping to another level, Antwerp is truly leading the way in the future of fashion retail

RITZ PARIS The Ritz Paris, one of the most legendary hotels in the world, has reopened after an extensive four-year refurbishment. The Ritz’s heritage is illustrious; previous guests include Marcel Proust, Maria Callas and Coco Chanel. Expect spectacularly opulent suites, some dedicated to the famous names who frequented the hotel, including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Charlie Chaplin – and Chanel. The new

Salon Proust is the venue for a sophisticated afternoon tea which, of course, includes the madeleine cakes associated with the eminent author. Other unique features include the Ritz Club, with its turquoise mosaic swimming pool and Chanel spa, and the shopping gallery, which features some of the world’s most exclusive names. WEBER HODEL FEDER Footwear label Weber Hodel Feder is named after its three founders who are former students of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. They started the brand in 2012 when they designed a striking style of brogue-like ankle boots that are fastened with Velcro. These have become Weber Hodel Feder classics, with high- and low-top versions available. For spring/summer 2017, invest in the brand’s trainers that come in pale peach with black soles or in combinations of baby blue, yellow and pink. Statement footwear has never looked so good. FRESCOBOL CARIOCA Frescobol Carioca started as a maker of beach bats and has evolved into a swimwear brand that is now a favourite of celebrities and sports enthusiasts. Its spring/ summer 2017 collection draws inspiration from the botanical gardens in Rio de Janeiro, its hometown. Four plants have inspired a range of smart geometric prints which are used in two styles of men’s swimwear – a sporty design and a more tailored version. The colour palette of cool blues evokes summer days by the pool, making these holiday staples. 30: Polished To Perfection

66

есть обладателей статуса Antwerp’s Most Brilliant.

36: Retail Pioneers

68

частности Adidas, C P Company, Fred Perry и Native Youth.

60: When You Shop The World, Shop Tax Free

The collection includes earthy tones such as Save up to 16% by shopping tax free, see page 60
