Danish porcelain brand Royal Copenhagen was founded in 1775 by Queen Juliane Marie. Today, the brand is renowned around the globe for its beautiful dinnerware, distinctive blue patterns and remarkable craftsmanship, and is found in some of the world’s most stylish homes. The Hav collection is the his toric company’s latest launch and was created by the three founders of the KiBiSi design group: architect Bjarke Ingels, industrial designer Lars Holme Larsen and design philosopher Jens Martin Skibsted. Inspired by the ocean and Royal Copenhagen’s signature blue wave print, found on the back of each design, the collection rei magines tableware for a contem porary audience. ‘We wanted to create new and accessible dinnerware,’ says
Niels Bastrup, the brand’s creative director. ‘A set that could be used by everyone and for all purposes. Our ambition was to reinterpret our heritage and bring it into the future.’ As well as plates, bowls and mugs, highlights of the collec tion include a striking carafe and teapot adorned with bronze details. Guided by their principles of conscious luxury, the design trio worked to ensure the range was ‘aesthetically sustainable’ with a timeless look. STEP IT UP Arkk Copenhagen opened its first flagship store on Østergade in December 2019, following a successful pop-up on the same street. The sneaker brand was created in 2014 by friends Thomas Refdahl and Kasper Høj Rasmussen – who originally met at kindergarten – and the pair launched their first trainers 18 months later. oNE to watch CARCEL Copenhagen-based Carcel aims to make a difference by employing women in prisons, paying them a fair wage and teaching them new skills to create its seasonless styles. Carcel’s womenswear pieces are designed in Copenhagen and sourced locally in the country of production. Knitwear is made from baby alpaca wool and crafted by women in Cusco, Peru while silk pieces are created in Chiang Mai, Thailand. UNIQLO MOVES IN Last year Japanese brand Uniqlo opened its first store in Copenhagen in the historic Louises Hus building, which dates back to the 1700s. VITAMIN fIX April 2020 saw the launch of OleHenriksen’s new Banana Bright Vitamin C Serum (595DKK). The aesthetic is simple yet confident, colours are neutral and textured fabrics add warmth without detracting from an overall feel of simplicity. Illums Bolighus presents an aspirational lifestyle for customers, designed to spark creativity
ILLUMS BOLIGHUS Illums Bolighus carries a carefully curated edit of Denmark’s most celebrated brands across fashion, furniture and homeware. The Kitchen Living Dining concept store offers everything you need to transform the many areas of your home. The store opened in August 2019 and has quickly become known for its expert staff and unique range of beautiful products. Located on Niels Hemmingsens Gade in the city’s old town, Kitchen Living Dining hosts events and talks that allow customers to engage with and experience its diverse and exciting product range. It also lends items to stylists and bloggers to use for photoshoots, styling or collaborative campaigns.
The overarching colour palette is muted and hero pieces include sustainable crystal glassware by Lyngby Glas and practical kitchen appliances by Blomsterbergs. The Arbejdermuseet – Workers Museum – offers a fascinating look at Copenhagen’s working past. As well as immersive experiences, where visitors can get a feel for what life was like for workers throughout history, the venue is also home to Café & Ølhalle. Located under the museum, the eatery is also rooted in the past and decorated to look exactly as it would have done in 1892. Copenhagen’s only listed basement tavern, it serves classic smørrebrød open sandwiches on traditional porcelain plates with a soundtrack of Danish folk songs.
