CUSTOMERS Innovative menswear brands in Amsterdam have been taking inspiration from streetwear to create a new range of appealingly modern looks, as Beth Druce fnds out

The compelling combination of culture, vibrancy and diversity has made Amsterdam an inspirational draw for Europe’s creatives. Especially so in recent years: a new breed of Dutch menswear and footwear producers have been injecting street-style cool into their designs, taking many of the city’s home-grown fashion labels into a new league. ETQ is an Amsterdam-based footwear and accessories brand that 85

has carved out a distinctive niche in the trainer market. The label was founded in 2010 and produces streamlined designs that buck the trends of the sports apparel industry at large. Engineered under a banner of ‘elegance, timelessness and quality’, its thick-soled leather sneakers and high-tops nod to 90s minimalism, in contrast to the pervading trend for high-velocity running shoes in rainbow colours. ‘Sneaker culture has evolved quite Left: Daily Paper Masai shirt and trousers

a bit since the 2000s,’ says ETQ’s brand manager Wendy Wang. ‘Our personal taste went from bright colours, prints and patterns towards more minimalistic, clean design.’ ETQ’s signature shoes are low-top lace-ups crafted in soft leather with white rubber cupsoles. The brand’s collection is muted and tonal, featuring fully lined classic trainers in black, white, greys, indigos and tan browns, with only

the occasional brighter hue. Detail and texture are important. The brand explores and experiments with a range of materials until a look and feel is perfected; its rubberised leather has a smooth, matte finish while its ice-coloured leather has a soft, almost iridescent sheen. ‘We are still innovating,’ Wang says, and explains that the brand is ‘discovering new ways not to reinvent the wheel but to try to

make the wheel better, stronger and more visually appealing’. For autumn/winter 2016/17 more formal footwear, in the shape of Chelsea boots and Derby shoes, is being introduced and this will start ETQ’s transition from trainer specialist to menswear brand. Scotch & Soda was founded in the 1980s, and relaunched in 2001, and its collections bring together an eclectic array of influences and

inspirations from around the world. From its design studio – housed in a former church next to a canal in the centre of Amsterdam – pieces are created to reflect the individuality and originality of the brand and of its customers. For its autumn/winter 2016/17 menswear collection, Scotch & Soda has taken its cue from Scandinavia, with rugged utility pieces that have a distinctly Nordic feel. These include a mountaineer’s jacket in a patterned sea-blue wool and worker shirts in yellow marled wool. Knitwear takes its cue from multicoloured traditional Fair Isle designs, updated in a vibrant palette that contrasts nautical blues with hits of coral for a handcrafted effect. Quilted brushed-cotton shirt jackets continue the utility trend; lined with nylon, and featuring an all-over plaid design and welted pockets, they inject a classic workwear piece with stylish appeal. The Owen wide-fit worker trousers, meanwhile, are made from unevenly pigmented cotton

twill that has been spattered with paint for a lived-in-and-worked-in appearance. Daily Paper is another innovative Dutch menswear label. The clothing brand takes inspiration from the African heritage of its three founders and fuses this with modern design. One of the trio is Hussein Suleiman, who moved from Somalia at the age of two and grew up in Amsterdam. He is particularly appreciative of the city’s creative industry and how mutually supportive its members are, which nurtures confidence and a belief in your own possibilities. His brand’s ready-to-wear collection comprises separates, outerwear and accessories. The pieces have a casual, sporty slant, often playing into the athleisure trend. Some T-shirts and long-sleeved shirts are printed with a 1930s map of Masai land in Kenya, while other T-shirts feature Masai prints. A street feel is created by boxy silhouettes and the repetition of motifs and logos that

stretch down sleeves and across the chest in a distinctive and eye-catching fashion. With new ideas and designs that are a direct product of the Dutch capital’s DNA, this is an exciting time for men’s fashion in Amsterdam. It is something that Suleiman is proud to be part of. ‘Many brands have become successful in a short period of time, which of course inspires other creatives,’ he says. And long may this continue

G-STAR ELWOOD JEANS

Exactly 20 years after G-Star Raw’s iconic Elwood 5620 jeans were introduced, Hannah Lewis goes behind the scenes to discover the history of the design and why it remains so popular today

In 1996, Pierre Morisset was sitting on a terrace in the south of France when a passing motorcyclist caught his eye. Or, more specifically, his trousers did. The rider’s jeans, noted Morriset, had formed to his riding position due to exposure to the elements over time. ‘Moulded into his riding position, they articulated the shape of his body. The knees, the back pocket, the heel pad, I looked at it and instantly knew: this is it.’ A chance encounter it may have been, but this rainy day in the south of France was a career-defining moment for Morisset. It led to the creation of the iconic G-Star 87

Elwood 5620 jeans, which have become not only the most emblematic creation of the brand – at which Morriset is still head designer – but also one of the most successful models of jeans ever. Founded in 1989, Dutch brand G-Star Raw set out with one main aim: to make excellent denim products that eschewed trends in favour of true quality and great design. It was only natural, then, that Morriset – already known as an expert in denim – would find his way to this groundbreaking brand. Morriset was determined to transform what he called the ‘traditional flat design of jeans’ Left: G-Star Raw Elwood 5620 original 1996 jeans

G-Star’s three-dimensional approach is as complex as it is unique, and represents a new way of thinking about denim and introduce the ‘next generation’ of denim, and G-Star was the perfect place to do this. Inspired by the motorcyclist, he and his team took a revolutionary approach to denim, designing pieces that were expertly sculpted to fit the three-dimensional form of the wearer. G-Star’s 3D approach to denim is as complex as it is unique. Unlike traditional pattern making, which approaches the garment as a flat object, the 3D method uses various techniques to sculpt the jeans around the wearer, including paper

patterns, chemical treatments and heat, special stitching and ironing techniques, and specially designed foam moulds. Combined with G-Star’s introduction of raw denim – an unwashed, untreated form of the fabric – the brand had created a completely new way of thinking about and working with denim. The result of these processes was the G-Star Elwood 5620 jeans. Initial success was slow but, as global brand manager Remco de Nijs explains, this soon changed. ‘When we introduced the Elwood, retailers and especially consumers

The style is at the core of each seasonal collection from G-Star and of course the jeans have seen various incarnations over the years, although five key elements remain unchanged: articulated knee pads, knee darts, saddle patches, heel guards and slanted thigh seams. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of their launch, on the 20th of each month of 2016 a new limitededition version of the G-Star Elwood is appearing in stores, and they’re sure to become collector’s pieces. ‘The first in the monthly series was the G-Star Elwood Moto, a re-release of one of the first Elwoods designed in 1996,’ explains de Nijs. ‘In February a Above (from lef): the limited-edition G-Star Raw Elwood Moto for women; and for men

were quite sceptical. Because of its 3D construction, it was difficult to fold and looked strange. The staff in the stores had a hard time selling the Elwood to their consumers. We pushed and pushed, but sales number remained low. But then we asked store staff to wear the Elwood in their stores … and it became an instant bestseller! When consumers saw how the design was constructed around the legs, they all wanted our Elwood.’ Today it is one of the world’s most popular jean styles, with more than 20 million pairs sold worldwide.

special Raw for the Oceans edition (made out of recycled ocean plastic) was launched, and in April we launched a special Elwood edition by Marc Newson. In October we will launch an Oxford Denim version … so stay tuned!’ From the autumn/winter 2016/17 main collection, women should look out for the 5620 Pouch jean, which incorporates a functional and stylish pouch, inspired by workwear. For men, the Staq jean uses skeleton taping to create a fashionable ‘stacked’ or ‘ruched’ effect along the leg. Over the years the G-Star Elwood has attracted a number of famous fans, from Hollywood actors to top models and the world’s leading musicians. But none, perhaps, has connected with the brand so wholly as superstar producer and singer Pharrell Williams. Following two years of collaboration between G-Star and Williams’s company Bionic Yarn on joint venture Raw for the Oceans, the partnership has been formalised both financially and creatively. As well as becoming co-owner of G-Star Raw, Williams has been appointed head of imagination at the fashion label. Speaking of the developments (wearing, of course, his favourite G-Star Elwood jeans), Williams explained his excitement at working with the brand: ‘G-Star is an independently minded and forward-thinking company. I believe it will be the definitive jeans brand of the 21st century.’ The future looks bright for G-Star and its iconic Elwood 5620s

PERFECT DAY: ROTTERDAM

PHOTO: MARC HADLEY

A dynamic city with an ever-changing skyline and a fearless approach to reinvention, Rotterdam is an ideal day-trip destination. This famous port town offers a wealth of shops, cultural attractions, festivals, restaurants and parks. SHOP spends a day exploring Rotterdam’s museums and quirky independent stores, while tucking into freshly baked sourdough bread.

Chabot Museum Occupying one of Rotterdam’s most striking villas, the Chabot Museum showcases a large collection of paintings and sculptures by Dutch expressionist Henk Chabot and some of his contemporaries. If the weather permits, a stroll in the garden offers a tranquil retreat from the city bustle.

Een Bloemetje op Tafel Even in the depths of winter, Een Bloemetje op Tafel offers a cheering cocoon of blossoms and greenery. The store’s name translates as ‘flowers on the table’ and, fittingly, it offers a mix of organic blooms as well as interior items from both vintage sources and contemporary designers. Highlights include the beautifully made Foekje Fleur vases which, thanks to their striking shapes and playful colours, will brighten up any home.

PERFECT DAY: THE HAGUE

PHOTO: ROEL RUIJS

The Hague combines all the amenities of an international metropolis with the charm of a seaside resort town. Home to the Dutch government and the royal family, the city offers an array of attractions, ranging from fascinating museums to cool cafés. SHOP spends a day exploring a selection of The Hague’s must-see sights.

Frites Atelier Sergio Herman was the man behind the three Michelinstarred Belgian restaurant Oud Sluis, but now he’s turned his hand to something a little more humble: the potato. Frites Atelier – the name means ‘fries workshop’ – is characterised by its commitment to strong design values and premium ingredients, such as the Zeeland clay potato, elevating even the most modest of meals to a gourmet experience.

Museum de Gevangenpoort The Museum de Gevangenpoort, which was a notable prison for 400 years from the 15th century, details the history of the building, including some of its famous inhabitants, as well as the city’s political past. Visits are by guided tour in Dutch (though an English audioguide is available); there is one in English every Sunday.

TRANSLATIONS РУССКИЙ ПЕРЕВОД 34: Cool Customers

40: In Focus: G-Star Elwood Jeans

90

globalblue.com

– В феврале вышла серия «Raw for the Oceans» (изготовленная из переработанного океанического пластика), а в апреле мы выпустили линию «Elwood edition by Marc Newson».

40: In Focus: G-Star Elwood Jeans 品牌关注: G -Star Elwood系列牛仔裤

globalblue.com

Oxford Denim … jadi, terus ikuti kabar kami!’
