INSIDE KNOWLEDGE

CHANGE IS GOOD

Anyone with an interest in home décor and furniture will be in their element at the Timothy Oulton store in the south of Amsterdam. Every one of the brand’s pieces is made by hand using traditional methods, to designs that are inspired by the past but updated for modern tastes. Oulton’s love of furniture and the past stem from his father, who ran an antiques business in Britain for many years. Needless to say, his Amsterdam gallery is set in a heritage building, which dates back to 1890 and was previously a church. rd Timothy Oulton, Amstelveenseweg 136, 1075 XM Amsterdam, +31 (0)20 686 7070, timothyoulton.com

Opened in the summer of 2015, Keet is a concept store with a difference. The idea is simple: to create a retail space where local artists and designers can sell their wares. As such, while the shop itself is a permanent fixture, the products within change depending on which designers have rented out a space that month. From beauty products to postcards, clothes to art prints, there is a diverse range of unique – and often custom-made – items. The in-store café serves fair trade coffee, homemade smoothies and a well-thought-out selection of light bites. th Keet, Oppert 2A, 3011 HV Rotterdam, +31 (0)10 210 5433, keetrotterdam.nl

Since its opening in 2008, the Moooi store in Amsterdam’s colourful district of De Jordaan has been a beacon of inspiring design. Online optical retailer Ace & Tate opened its first flagship store last year, in the De Negen Straatjes (‘Nine Streets’) area of its native Amsterdam. American heritage brand Woolrich has a new store in Amsterdam. The design concept for the bright and airy shop was created by Japan’s Wonderwall studio, and features a Dutch-style skylight on the ground floor and a cosier lounge area in the basement. Reflecting the brand’s heritage – it was founded in 1830 – the walls are hung with archive material, prints and pictures of its historic mills, and the furniture is upholstered in classic Buffalo Check woollen fabric. ALL CHANGE Amsterdam’s Rokin area is undergoing a substantial and exciting redevelopment. Sally McIlhone explores the latest must-visit part of the city

PHOTO: BENITO LA MALFA CC BY-NC-ND 2.0

Amsterdam is a city with a plethora of diverse shopping options. Those who prefer to peruse small independent boutiques, bars and cafés are well catered for in the De Negen Straatjes (‘Nine Streets’) area, whereas PC Hooftstraat offers the crème de la crème of international design talent. And in the past few years, the city has seen a new key location emerge: the historical street of Rokin and its surrounding areas. Rokin is currently being transformed from an underused and industrial boulevard dotted with a handful of time-honoured shops to a retail powerhouse that will boast a luxury concept store and a flagship of British department store Marks & Spencer. ‘In 2011 we developed a vision together with the local council: a city boulevard with style,’ says Pauline Buurma, manager of Rokin’s association of entrepreneurs and property owners. ‘The trigger was the making of the new metro system’s north-south line.’

Lladro, Royal Delft, Lalique, Meissen, and crystal by Swarovski. Run by mother-and-son team Angelique and Ramon Hogendoorn, the store is filled with items that they have personally selected for their calibre and concept. The setting, in a traditional wooden canal house, is

The creation of this new transport network, connecting opposite ends of the city, has turned Rokin into an increasingly appealing spot for redevelopment and the perfect place for a new shopping area. ‘Rokin is the shopping street with the highest potential in the Netherlands,’ Buurma continues. ‘The combination of monumental buildings and a spacious boulevard gives Rokin extraordinary chances. The new Rokin square with a sophisticated metro system and 300 parking spaces underground offers a unique area for special shops, museums and high-end restaurants and hotels.’ With the development due to be completed later this year, there are already plenty of intriguing shops to be discovered in Rokin. Hogendoorn & Kaufman stocks an impressive array of ceramics and glassware, including items from brands such as

equally inspiring; marvel at the antique-tiled fireplace and the oak panelling as you select which item to take home as a souvenir. If you’re running out of room in your suitcase, Hogendoorn & Kaufman will even ship your purchases to anywhere in the world. Ramon is excited about Rokin’s future. ‘I believe the rejuvenation to be a good thing, with the metro and the establishment of a big new shopping centre. This will mean more visitors to Rokin,’ he explains. ‘With the new centre meant to house luxury stores, it will mean more luxury shoppers. As a consequence we hope that more high-end stores will open along Rokin.’ Betsy Palmer is a hidden gem for footwear fans. Opened in 1996, the store offers quirky designs from both Palmer herself and brands including Castañer and Chie Mihara. Choose from trainers and block heels to flat brogues and ankle boots. The Rokin area is primed to become a key retail centre in Amsterdam, with new stores opening with increasing frequency in the lead-up to the completion of the renovation work. The summer of 2016 is set to be an exciting time for this already bustling area, as the final stages of its reinvention will cement its position as a must-visit destination for shopping. WHAT SHE WANTS Olcay Gulsen – founder of SuperTrash, an eponymous eveningwear line and now ST Studio – has an uncanny ability to make clothing that women covet. She explains her business philosophy to Hannah Lewis ‘As a brand, we aren’t static but dynamic. We evolve to the changing world around us,’ says Olcay Gulsen. Truer words could hardly be spoken about the Amsterdam-based designer and her fashion business. Having founded successful womenswear brand SuperTrash in 2001, and in 2011 presented a second, eponymous line of luxe eveningwear, Gulsen and her team are now celebrating the launch of a third label: ST Studio. The new line will cater to a different audience ‘without losing our brand identity’. Not a new audience, as such, but those Gulsen has been clothing for 15 years, whose tastes and habits have developed. Gulsen has a real ability to anticipate women’s needs, and it’s this instinct that gives her the edge in a competitive market. Left: ST Studio spring/summer 2016

focus on the exclusive international market.’ The results have been worn by a number of A-list stars, and Gulsen creates her stunning pieces with the red carpet in mind. SuperTrash and Olcay Gulsen may be directed at different audiences, but for Gulsen the common traits that link her clients are clear. ‘We cater to women with real character,’ she explains simply. And it is this characterful woman who was also the inspiration behind her new venture, ST Studio. Launched earlier this year, it is the new figurehead for Gulsen’s fashion empire, born from the changing desires Gulsen perceived in her clients, who increasingly look for excellent cuts and materials, along with classic, lasting design, as opposed to the fast fashion that had become so prevalent over the last decade. More sophisticated than SuperTrash, and more accessible than Olcay Gulsen, it looks set to

‘I wanted to create a fashion brand that linked design with the high street and was affordable to every girl,’ says Gulsen of the inspiration behind SuperTrash. ‘SuperTrash is young and on trend with fashionable hits and bold pieces with an outspoken character. Each collection contains that perfect quote tee, eclectic prints, denim … Affordable pieces that fit the season.’ Catering to a young, fashionconscious market, SuperTrash grew quickly, opening stores and securing retailers in more than 16 countries worldwide. Bolstered by this success, Gulsen made her first foray into the world of high-end apparel, launching her eponymous eveningwear line in 2011. ‘Olcay Gulsen is an uberfeminine collection with a classic twist,’ says the designer. ‘Each season a small capsule collection of 50 exclusive and unique pieces is made in a specialised atelier in New York and launched with a strong

appeal not only to both sets of existing customers, but also to a new audience. ‘ST Studio creates contemporary womenswear with head-to-toe looks for authentic women,’ explains Gulsen. ‘Feminine, classic essentials that last a lifetime, perfect layering pieces and directional looks that complement the collection season after season.’ Her favourite piece from the debut collection is a grey suit: ‘It’s very versatile and easily takes you from day to night. I think every woman should own a power suit.’ But she is also very proud of her range of versatile maxi dresses and all-in-ones. In fact, Gulsen seems truly enthusiastic about every aspect of her business, a trait that no doubt has carried her forward. ‘We aren’t static; we’re dynamic. We evolve with the world around us’ the brand’s existing store concept, as SuperTrash boutiques become ST Studio spaces (with SuperTrash being available only through other retailers). The new concept will represent the juxtaposition of strength and vulnerability that Gulsen addresses in her apparel, mixing oak with mother-of-pearl, and velvet with glass. Gulsen has always striven for ‘open service in every aspect of the customer journey’, so the counters will be round, not square, allowing for easier interaction between client and stylist. the pieces that are perfect for them as individuals. ‘I think you look stylish when you wear clothes that make you feel good,’ says Gulsen. With so many projects at once, it’s intriguing to know where Gulsen finds her seemingly endless inspiration. Are her clothes distinctly Dutch, for example? ‘Well, they are born and designed here, so they must have something Dutch, but in a way we are borderless – as fashion is everywhere. I think our collection is very international.’ At ST Studio, Gulsen combines the ‘comfy styles most Dutch women crave’ with a sense of high fashion, and perhaps it’s this that gives the label its distinct aesthetic. As for the inspiration that keeps her going forward, she believes she finds this everywhere. ‘You don’t always need to travel far to be inspired ... I know it sounds clichéd, but you can’t go out and look for inspiration, inspiration finds you’

TABLE TALK

Amsterdam’s restaurants are never content to rest on their laurels, as Maria Kirchen-Hill discovers STORK The banks of the river Ij would seem to be the perfect location for a fsh and seafood specialist. Set within an old industrial loft in a business park, this café-cumrestaurant is achingly on-trend, its exposed bricks and minimalist rustic interior design making for a strikingly modern venue. Stork’s dishes are simple, honest and delicious, making the most of the abundant fsh and seafood caught locally. Perfect in the summer months, the spacious terrace provides a wonderful spot to enjoy lunch, dinner or just a cofee and snack al fresco. Amsterdam’s long history as a hub of international trade has had a signifcant impact on its culinary scene. Ships from overseas brought with them exotic new ingredients for which the city’s prosperous citizens soon developed a taste. This brought with it a willingness to experiment and reinvent familiar dishes that still characterises Amsterdam today. The Dutch capital is brimming with fantastic places to eat, from Michelin-starred restaurants to experimental food projects. The best chefs in Amsterdam know that the only way to make a mark in a city flled with foodies is to ofer something distinctive. Whether through unique locations or unexpected services, the best Amsterdam eateries are going the extra mile to please their guests.

CIEL BLEU

VINKELES

When Onno Kokmeijer was offered the position of head chef at Ciel Bleu restaurant in 2003, he knew he wanted to do something extraordinary. He also knew who he wanted to work with: long-time friend and colleague Arjan Speelman. Together, they have led Ciel Bleu to not just one but two Michelin stars. Kokmeijer has a passion for seafood, and is committed to embracing local produce, believing the Netherlands to be rich in excellent ingredients. The food, wine and, above all, service at this venue are outstanding, as is the view, thanks to its location on the 23rd floor. Ciel Bleu, Hotel Okura, Ferdinand Bolstraat 333, 1072 LH Amsterdam, +31 (0)20 678 7450, okura.nl

Housed in an old bakery and now part of the chic Dylan hotel, Vinkeles offers fine dining in an intimate setting. The interior features original 18th-century bread ovens and other unusual period features: a surprisingly effective backdrop for the sophisticated cooking that has earned the restaurant a Michelin star and executive chef Dennis Kuipers numerous other accolades. Those looking for something extra-special should book a place at the chef’s table, where they can watch how Kuipers’ refined French dishes are prepared, or enquire about the Vinkeles on the Water service, where guests are served dishes in the hotel’s own small boat: a unique experience. Niche

Bohemian by Jibodh is the creation of two brothers – Imro and Eric Jibodh – who had worked in the fashion industry for several years before setting up their own menswear store in 2013. Visitors to the welcoming space will find everything for a modern man’s wardrobe, from well-cut suits to smart casual pieces and jeans. Stocking a wide range of brands, including Dr Denim, Daniel Wellington and Bertoni of Denmark, this characterful shop is definitely not to be missed.

Holland is one of the world’s leading cut-flower producers, so why not pick up a bouquet to liven up your hotel room during your stay? Niche is a small flower shop selling a colourful selection of plants and flowers. But you won’t find typical bouquets here – in fact, you won’t find any pre-made arrangements at all. Alongside flowers, the shop also carries postcards and various vases from Dutch labels. Visit the website for more information on the flower-arranging workshops hosted on Thursday nights.

PERFECT DAY: THE HAGUE

The Hague combines all the amenities of an international metropolis with the charm of a seaside resort town. Home to the Dutch government and the royal family, the city offers an array of attractions, ranging from fascinating museums to cool cafés. SHOP spends a day exploring

Lola Bikes and Coffee

Delftware is as Dutch as it gets, and where better to explore the history of the distinctive blue-and-white pottery than at the world-class Gemeentemuseum, which has one of the most extensive collections in the world. Its permanent exhibition charts the rise of Delftware as a symbol of Dutch prosperity in the Golden Age of the 17th century, and includes several pieces by Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles, or Royal Delft – the last remaining maker from the 1600s.

A bike shop and espresso bar combined, Lola has a unique charm. Not only does it serve up awardwinning coffee, but it also hosts regular weekly cycling events. Open to everyone, the bike rides are a great opportunity to bond with fellow cycling enthusiasts as well as enjoy Holland’s beautiful scenery. The café also offers a coffee workshop on the last Thursday of every month, which reveals a few tricks of the barista trade.

RON GASTROBAR The philosophy at Ron Gastrobar is simple: anything is possible, and the guest is king. Serving up high-end food in a relaxed setting, this restaurant has become a favourite with locals. Offering great wines as well as delectable cocktails, the space is as well suited to an impromptu snack with evening drinks as it is to a leisurely long lunch. Dishes are inventive and modern without being fussy. Look out for the lobster sandwich with cognac sauce, which is pure indulgence.

globalblue.com

38: What She Wants Чего хочет женщина Олкей Гулсен основала марку SuperTrash, линию вечерней одежды Olcay Gulsen, а теперь и ателье ST Studio.

PHOTO: SUPERTRASH

如今, globalblue.com

globalblue.com

82: When You Shop The World, Shop Tax Free
