THE ART OF THE MATTER

Beirut’s art scene is becoming increasingly buoyant, as private collectors, institutions, museums and galleries combine to showcase the work of Lebanese and international artists, reports Beth Druce

his autumn, Lebanese businessman Tony Salamé opened a 40,000-square-foot exhibition space in Jal el Dib on Beirut’s Mediterranean coastline. The Aïshti Foundation, home to a signifcant proportion of Salame’s own art collection, is the city’s frst large-scale contemporary exhibition space and refects the increasing buoyancy of Beirut’s art scene. The exhibition space is the next stage in the evolution of Aïshti, the high-end retail empire founded by Salamé in 1989. Designed by British architect David Adjaye, it’s part of the development of Aïshti Seaside, a destination store that combines fashion and homeware retail, a café, and now a cultural hub. The art museum’s frst exhibition has been curated by Massimiliano Gioni, artistic director of the New Museum in New York – a sign that Lebanon’s burgeoning art scene is attracting notable international names. May Calil, an art consultant and collector of Lebanese descent, is a keen observer of the city’s evolution in recent years. ‘The main development is the appearance of new art spaces and museums,’ she notes. ‘There is a desire to build art institutions with permanent collections in Beirut, either privately or for national collections as in Sursock.’ The Sursock Museum, formerly a private

villa, was bequeathed to Beirut by Nicolas Ibrahim Sursock in 1952 to be redeveloped into an art museum. Its grand reopening this autumn (scheduled for the frst of October when we went to press) follows an eightyear closure and extensive expansion which includes a 600-square-metre exhibition hall. The inaugural relaunch exhibition, Regards sur Beyrouth: 160 Ans d’Images, chronicles the representation of Beirut from the 1800s to 1960. Pieces on display comprise not only the museum’s collections but also its structure; Nicolas Sursock’s original study, complete with his desk and bookcase, is one of the exhibits. The reopening was hotly anticipated: a feature in Lebanon’s Daily Star commented, ‘The sleeping beauty of Lebanon’s art scene is about to awaken.’ Founded in 2010 by architects Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte and Pascale Wakim, the Carwan Gallery focuses on limited-edition pieces, using them as a vehicle to transport Lebanese artists onto an international stage; part of a wider movement in Beirut to bolster

the profles of Lebanese designers while simultaneously improving awareness and education about art in the city. Further examples of this include the notfor-proft Beirut Art Center, which aims to promote local and international contemporary art and increase accessibility. Its director, art historian and curator Marie Muracciole, joined the centre in 2014 from Paris, where she was in charge of cultural programmes at the Jeu de Paume arts centre. In a similar vein, Ashkal Alwan, the Lebanese Association for Plastic Arts, facilitates a range of creative endeavours. Its Home Workspace is a 2,000-square-

Prominent Lebanese artists are choosing to return to Beirut and are basing themselves in the city metre facility dedicated to arts education and production. Beirut is becoming a country whose investment in art is signifcant in comparison to its modest size and the absence of any government funding. Prominent Lebanese artists are also increasingly choosing to base themselves in Beirut, such is the quality of support and promotion now ofered. For Calil, this is a natural consequence of Lebanese artists’ success elsewhere. ‘For a small country there are quite a lot of Lebanese active in the art world, be it in London, Paris or New York, and there appears to be a desire to create

institutions [in Beirut] that would compare internationally,’ she observes. Calil is also keen to highlight a rise in native artists returning to the city after a period based elsewhere. ‘A number of my generation have returned to Beirut in order to live and work, the reality being that [now] many successful Lebanese designers have chosen to build their career in Beirut rather than abroad.’ Salamé’s exhibition space is set to revolutionise the art scene in Beirut and it could also be good news for his frst love: luxury fashion retail. For, while the Middle East’s fashion industry already has a home in the city, it will inevitably beneft from the art industry’s rising status. Brands such as Zuhair Murad, Rabih Kayrouz and Elie Saab have become household names by showing their collections abroad, but with the current focus on craft and design so pertinent to Lebanese style, a new generation of fashion designers in Beirut may soon have the opportunity to make their names on home ground. ‘There is a sophistication, knowledge Above: two views of the Beirut Art Center’s interior

and global viewpoint that is very present in the art scene in Lebanon,’ notes Calil. It’s a phenomenon that is set to echo through the wider echelons of Beirut’s creative industries, raising their profles for all the world to see sursock.museum, carwangallery.com, beirutartcenter.org, ashkalalwan.com

deft linguist might say that rising Lebanese design star Timi Hayek’s career path in fashion was prescribed at birth – the Arabic word Hayek translates into English as weaver. Hayek is an up-andcoming name on the Beirut fashion scene and her handmade garments appeal to women who appreciate comfort and style – a combination evident in Hayek’s popular linen-weave mini skirts and elegant satin dresses with frill detailing. ‘I like clothes that are simple but make me think twice,’ she says. ‘Whether it’s a small detail in the fabric choice or the fnishing, there has to be something in the outft that makes it a keeper.’ Hayek is from a family with a strong design background: her mother, an aunt and an uncle are all interior architects. As a child growing up in Ottawa and later as a teenager in Beirut, she constantly drew girls’ clothing, and went on to study fashion at the prestigious Central Saint Martins art school in London. ‘It was the perfect environment to be purely creative and bursting with ideas,’ she says. ‘The classmates,

Hayek makes light, ethereal garments that transform the wearer into a fairytale goddess the location of the school in the centre of London, everything was perfect for pushing me to my creative limits.’ In Hayek’s second year, one of her prints which featured cats and fowers was selected by world-famous British department store Liberty to be produced and sold as part of its range. Her early designs also led to work at Marc Jacobs in Paris and Alexander McQueen in London – a fabulous grounding from which to establish her own brand. In April this year she opened her frst boutique at the top of Monot Street in Beirut — a cobbled street lined with hip restaurants Above (from top): Timi Hayek store; fabric created for Liberty

and bars. The shop is housed in a 1940s brick building commissioned by her greatgrandmother, a supermarket tycoon who made a fortune in Africa. ‘I hope to create an escape from reality, a place where people can discover interesting outfts in a modern and fresh environment,’ says Hayek. Hayek often turns to mythology when dreaming up prints. Vaslav Nijinsky’s performance in the ballet L’Après-midi d’un Faune for Les Ballets Russes inspired her silk Fauna & Flora scarf. It includes swirling images of nature and a young faun who is devastated by unrequited love. The same motif appears across an elegant silk dress which would bring whimsy and style to any formal occasion. ‘I’m amazed how people come up with such creatively bizarre and fascinating stories to understand themselves and the world around them,’ she says. ‘It’s also a great inspiration for print ideas, the creatures and settings are familiar with a bizarre twist, making you look – and think – twice.’ In a sense, mythology guides all of her creations: Hayek makes light, ethereal garments

that transform the wearer into a fairytale goddess. Her recent collections have consisted largely of simple white and beige pieces, but subtle details such as pleats and interesting cuts elevate them to the status of art. For her latest autumn/winter collection, she has focused on pleating fabrics such as chifon and mikado, juxtaposed with tricot. ‘The fnishings will also have an interesting twist, using velvet and linen,’ she says. The new collection will include sheer pleats in nude colours and playful layering for winter. Hayek is particularly enthusiastic about a long,

Her boutique is open Monday to Thursday, and by appointment only on Friday and Saturday, so be sure to get in touch in advance if you are planning to visit over the weekend. Hayek loves discussing her designs with visitors any day of the week – and says the conversation defnitely goes two ways. ‘My environment and the people I meet really afect the kind of clothes I make at any specifc time,’ she says. ‘I am at the shop most of the week, so I get to meet the clients frst hand and see their reactions, their likes and dislikes. It’s great to meet people and it gives me a sense of what I can do to keep improving my product.’ This hands-on approach combined with fattering styles and captivating inspirations makes Timi Hayek’s world one we’d all like to step into timihayek.com

Mar Mikhael, one of Beirut’s most exciting neighbourhoods, is gaining international recognition for its designers, creatives and makers, as well as its vibrant atmosphere. Sally McIlhone takes a tour

eirut’s Mar Mikhael district has recently been highlighted by Vogue for a painted staircase considered one of the ‘most amazing’ in the world. Monocle magazine’s 2015 restaurant awards rated its Tawlet restaurant as the world’s eighth-best place to eat. This chic neighbourhood is growing in popularity and is now home to a host of exciting boutiques and an innovative fashion school, making it well worth exploring. The fashion school in question, Creative Space Beirut (CSB), was founded by Sarah Hermez, a Lebanese local who studied at the prestigious Parsons design school in New York before deciding to combine her creative passion with her desire to do good. Disillusioned by the conventional fashion industry, Hermez spoke to her former Parsons tutor Caroline Simonelli, who suggested that she start a school. Simonelli travelled to Beirut to help Hermez launch the pilot project and the rest is history. Over the past three years, CSB has raised over $100,000 and shaped the lives of countless individuals. ‘I think it’s important for people to understand the importance of

free creative education and fostering the talent of individuals who might not be able to afford expensive programs at institutions locally or internationally,’ explains Sarah Hunaidi, Creative Space Beirut’s communications director. ‘Design permeates all aspects of our lives – the clothes we wear, the buildings we live in, the products we use. For it to be an effective tool in the progress of society, it needs to be inclusive. People from all walks of life have talent, and these people need to be provided with an education in order to give them a chance to help design the world around them. Education should not be reserved for the privileged few.’ The Mar Mikhael area with its vibrant array of independent shops is the perfect fit for this ambitious project. ‘Mar Mikhael is a neighbourhood that blends modern and traditional,’ points out Hunaidi. ‘There are many design studios, cafés, bars and Above: up-and-coming designers at work at Creative Space Beirut

At the same time, there are craftspeople, small shops and residents that still carry the old soul of the neighbourhood.’ Mar Mikhael is also a magnet for local young creatives, adds Hunaidi. ‘We thought it would be good to be in a neighbourhood with likeminded people.’ They thought right. shoppers to invest in unique products made by CSB’s students. ‘We just launched our new ready-to-wear line, which is affordable and versatile, comfortable and classy,’ says Hunaidi. ‘Visitors are welcome to drop by our studio and look at the collection, or just say hello and get to know the initiative.’ If you’re interested in supporting this exceptional project, be sure to drop in. The next Mar Mikhael hotspot to visit on your tour of the area is Vanina, an ethically conscious boutique stocked with stunning clothing, footwear, bags and jewellery. The joint project of childhood friends Tatiana Fayad and Joanne Hayek, Vanina offers products that allow visitors to take home a touch of ‘made in Lebanon’ style. ‘Mar Mikhael is a hub of local treasures,’ explain the founders. ‘The variety of experiences that it has to offer is like nowhere else. From artisans’ workshops to trendy concept stores, it’s a happening hood by day and by night. We loved the authenticity of this area, and the architecture of the ancient buildings. Their interiors are so unique and inspiring.’ The same can be said of the store,

with its high ceilings, original tiles, vintage chandeliers and shabby-chic display tables – the perfect backdrop for the gold lettering bangles, satin paper-bag-waist trousers and cute printed pouches on offer. ‘We get inspired by everything that surrounds us, by Beirut, its culture, its people,’ the designers explain. At this original store, you’re sure to feel inspired, too. Rosa Maria was already an international jewellery success before its Mar Mikhael store opened in 2011. ‘It was time to give back to Lebanon,’ explains Monique Haddad, sister of the brand’s designer Rosy Abourous, and Rosa Maria’s commercial manager. ‘The location was the first thing that spoke to me, I fell in love with the spot. Here, I could gather designers, painters, photographers and sculptors that would give people the opportunity to discover craftsmanship in its most beautiful form.’ Rosa Maria’s handmade jewellery makes Above: Rosa Maria handmade jewellery; the brand’s concept store

In Mar Mikhael visitors can protect the skills of the past and invest in the future an ideal memento of your trip, especially as you’ll be investing in the protection of valuable artisanal expertise. ‘It’s important to preserve the skills of local craftspeople, since handcrafting is becoming a dying art,’ says Haddad. In Mar Mikhael, you can protect the know-how of the past and invest in the talent of the future: a truly unmatched experience soukeltayeb.com/tawlet (open daytime only), creativespacebeirut.com, vanina.me, rosamariajewellery.com

MARC JACOBS

FREY WILLE

The name Trouble piques curiosity about this covetable handbag from Marc Jacobs. The Trouble is a classic shoulder bag with a charmingly playful side typical of Marc Jacobs designs. The ladylike box shape references handbags of the 1960s, and Trouble has four convenient interior compartments and a convertible chain that means it can be worn in various diferent ways. Each bag is painstakingly assembled by hand from 35 pieces of leather; hand-painted edges and hand-applied eyelets for the chain-holes ensure a fawless fnish. Marc Jacobs, 137 El-Moutrane Street, Beirut Central District, +961 (0)1 991111 ext 148, marcjacobs.com

This Frey Wille bangle was inspired by some of the world’s best-known paintings: Claude Monet’s water lilies series. Monet’s paintings of water lilies were key to the early Impressionist school, and Frey Wille’s Claude Monet collection pays homage to a bold concept, groundbreaking in its time, now one of the most popular styles in modern art. The Austrian brand is known for its enamel jewellery, which is often inspired by great artists. New interpretations of famous artworks are expertly cast in enamel and set in precious metals to become bright and beautiful jewellery items, themselves akin to works of art. KAREN CHEKERDJIAN Interior designer Karen Chekerdjian’s store fies the fag for contemporary Middle Eastern design. The store’s industrial décor refects the nature of the surrounding port neighbourhood, and the resulting atmosphere is chic but not contrived. The boutique ofers ‘things we make, things we like’ and sells not only pieces created by the designer but also products that she loves, from great books to her favourite biscuits.
