MAKING HISTORY When Hussein Bazaza was designing his eponymous label’s autumn/winter 2016/17 collection, he looked to medieval times and a character named Sophia the Alchemist. This inspiration can be traced in the motifs of the collection, which are based on symbols, drawings and equations used by alchemists. Garments are decorated with lace collage, embroidery and other embellishments, not to mention patterns, to rich effect. Intricate prints that tell stories contrast with geometric colour-blocking in metallics and touches of red, yellow and green. This wonderful collection by the prizewinning designer is filled with the magic and mystery of times gone by. gc Hussein Bazaza, Star Tower, Damascus Road, Sodeco Square, Achrafieh, +961 (0)7096 8388, husseinbazaza.com

SUITED AND BOOTED The modern gentleman need look no further than Brunello Cucinelli for a high-quality, distinguished wardrobe, as proven once again by this season’s offering. Discreet patterns run throughout the autumn/winter 2016/17 designs for men. The collection is rounded off with footwear that ranges from sporty sneakers to sophisticated lace-ups, such as those pictured (1,897,500 LBP). ebanon is renowned for superb shopping options, particularly in Beirut’s worldclass malls and in the Beirut Souks district; for impressive dining establishments and stunning bars; and for hotels that will make you never want to leave. Yet readers may be surprised to learn that the country is also known for its exceptional skiing opportunities. The ski resorts in the snow-covered peaks of the Mount Lebanon range offer 49 lifts and pistes totalling 300km in length. For a winter sports fix this season, Lebanon offers a truly original experience.

In 1913 Lebanese engineer Ramez Ghazzoui returned to his home country after studying in Switzerland, bringing with him skiing expertise. Just over 20 years later Lebanon’s first ski club, Le Club Libanais, opened. A year later, in 1935, the country’s first ski school was set up at the Le Grand Cèdre hotel. By the 1940s Lebanon had established itself on the international ski scene, competing internationally and sending a team to the Winter Olympics in Switzerland in 1948. The country has since become known as the Switzerland of the East. Several of its peaks

are more than 3,000m high and the Lebanese ski season is similar to that of the Alps (midDecember to April, snowfall permitting), so those who have had their fill of Verbier and St Moritz need look no further. Cedars ski resort is one of the oldest in the country and it was here that Lebanon’s first ski lift was built in 1953. Cedars has a slightly longer season than the other resorts as a result of its 2,000m altitude, and it is favoured by beginners due to its array of gentle slopes. Just two hours’ drive from Beirut, the resort is located near the town of Bcharré, which is itself worth visiting for the Gibran Museum, dedicated to the treasured Lebanese writer and artist Khalil Gibran. Take a break from the

slopes and discover his sketches, paintings and other works before checking out the culinary options in the area ‒ Le Pichet restaurant at Le Cedrus boutique hotel offers salads, grilled meats and crêpes among other enticing dishes. Mzaar Kfardebian, just an hour’s drive from the capital, is the largest ski resort in the country, as well as being the biggest in Middle East, and it caters for both beginners and intermediate skiers. The peaks here offer views of the stunning Bekaa valley and Mount Hermon in the Anti-Lebanon mountain range. On a clear day you can even see Beirut itself. The resort organises an array of events over the course of the winter season; look out for information on the Mzaar Winter Festival and the Fire Dragon show during your stay. Above (clockwise from top right): skiing at the Faqra Club; the sauna at the InterContinental Mzaar spa; the InterContinental Mzaar hotel’s striking lobby

To balance your skiing trip with some relaxation, be sure to visit Les Thermes du Mzaar spa at the InterContinental Mzaar Lebanon Mountain Resort & Spa, where you can indulge in a shiatsu massage or a facial after a day on the slopes. Book a room, too: accommodation at the hotel is first class, as befits a recent winner of a World Luxury Hotels award. The InterContinental Mzaar also offers a selection of shops, a cinema and an indoor heated pool as well as a sauna and steam rooms, so your après-ski options are almost endless. When it comes to dining in the Mzaar area, Le Montagnou offers a mix of French and alpine-style dishes, from cassoulet to steaks and fondue, served in a traditional-looking chalet. For a dose of culture on your winter break, seek out Faqra and visit its exceptionally wellpreserved temple ruins. Nearby, the boutique hotel L’Auberge de Faqra is part of the Faqra Club, which also offers private ski slopes, a swimming pool and a wide range of activities year round. The Laklouk area offers impressive crosscountry skiing. Visitors can also explore the

beautiful Balou area nearby, with its waterfall and natural arches, as well as the grotto at Afqa. The Qanat Bakish resort is recommended for those who want to avoid crowds and is certainly a quieter option than the likes of Mzaar and Cedars. If you want to stay close to Beirut, Zaarour resort is the place for you. Its northfacing slopes offer spellbinding views of Mount Sannine and the Valley of the Skulls. For a varied trip, filled with culture, great food and relaxation as well as exhilarating skiing opportunities, Lebanon will amaze and delight in equal measure

Kadi followed suit about 12 months after that. Two years later, in 2013, Hage also founded her own label. It has been a remarkable time for all of them. ‘In May 2011, at the age of 25 years old, I launched my own studio and opened my first boutique in the heart of Beirut,’ Kadi says. ‘It was surreal, like a dream coming true.’ Crucially, these designers chose Lebanon as the place to establish themselves despite their overseas connections. Sandra Mansour spent her childhood in Switzerland, studying in Geneva at Webster University and at the École des Beaux Arts (now the Haute École

d’Art et de Design) before moving to France to gain her master’s degree at Istituto Marangoni in Paris. Nour Hage also studied in France, at the prestigious Parsons Paris School of Design. Rami Kadi, born in New Jersey in the US, grew up mainly in Lebanon. ‘It was obvious to me that my first atelier and showroom had to be opened in my country, in Beirut,’ he says. The appeal is evident. Beirut is home to a creative scene bursting with energy – and characterised by a great sense of solidarity among designers. ‘We don’t have government support or a thriving ecosystem that helps us grow. We have to do it all together as friends and peers, through advice and collaboration,’ explains Hage. Hage, for example, has 110

collaborated with socially conscious Lebanese brand Second St on a collection for L’Artisan du Liban that is being launched this autumn. Lebanon has been on the fashion map for some time, and Mansour, Hage and Kadi all began their careers with established Lebanese designers, learning from masters of fashion. Kadi joined Maison Rabih Kayrouz, which he describes as an enriching experience. ‘I learned how to create a collection from A to Z and the rigour that is required to be a successful designer,’ he says. Mansour and Hage both worked for Elie Saab. Hage gained much from her time with Saab, and also from stints with Oscar de la Renta and Damir Doma. ‘In many ways I learnt how to apply what I’d been taught at Parsons in

There’s a shared sense of drive and ambition among these three young designers – and also a quest for broader horizons a real-world environment,’ she says, adding that from team dynamics to the changing impact an investor can have on the ethos of a brand, it was a learning curve that would have a profound impact on the identity of her own label. ‘I guess you could say that working for big names taught me what I didn’t want to become,’ she acknowledges. While these three young designers have similar trajectories and a shared passion for craftsmanship, their aesthetics remain distinct. Hage has started to shy away from the classic model of creating seasonal collections, and sees herself as a clothing designer rather than a fashion designer. ‘I want to make clothes that feel like an extension of the wearer,’ she explains. ‘They need to be comfortable and

useful.’ Mansour has described her work as ‘a world where contemporary elegance meets simplicity.’ Kadi, in contrast, prefers intricate bespoke creations, with a focus on the handmade. His pieces are imbued with a strong sense of luxury. ‘There are no limits to creativity and drama in couture, from the fabrics to embroidery to the mise-en-scène,’ he says. Yet there’s a shared sense of drive and ambition that becomes immediately obvious when talking to these designers – and a quest for broad horizons, too. Hage recently moved to London and plans to create her collections across the British capital and Beirut. Kadi has taken his label to Paris and participated in Couture Week. As he explains, ‘Paris was the natural progression. It is the ultimate capital of luxury and haute couture. We are continuously developing our label and a fashion show is definitely part of our plans in the mid-term.’ Despite growing, these designers retain a clear sense of identity. Hage explains that ‘there’s an expanding Lebanese design community both inside the country and abroad, and it’s amazing to be a part of it.’ While their sights are resolutely set on making their mark further afield, the hearts and souls of these designers lie firmly in Lebanon, making them worthy ambassadors for the country’s creative scene

LIFE OF LUXURY

or the best luxury fashion in Lebanon, look no further than Aïshti, a market leader in the Middle Eastern fashion world. Founded in 1989, the label has become a powerhouse in the industry, with two major multibrand stores in Beirut and Jal el Dib, as well as over 100 standalone stores and monobrand boutiques. Aïshti covers all aspects of luxury living. While fashion is one of its key foundations, it also boasts a furniture and home accessories collection. The three Aïshti restaurants are among the most popular in Lebanon. Aïshti People, a favourite lunch spot with locals and visitors alike, can be found in downtown Beirut; tables are coveted year-round in the exclusive Aïshti People branch in the mountain resort of Faqra; the Art People restaurant in the recently opened Aïshti by the Sea is similarly stylish. Aïshti by the Sea is a lifestyle destination for fashion, wellness, food and art which houses the Urban Retreat day spa. The brand even publishes its own glossy magazine. What began as a single high-end clothing store has grown into an undisputed market leader for fashion and much more in Lebanon.

You could be forgiven for thinking that, given the success of the brand, chief executive officer Tony Salamé would rarely have time for anything other than work. Salamé, however, enjoys reading, skiing, cycling and collecting art – influenced by an early introduction to Arte Povera, an Italian art movement that started in the late 1960s and used unconventional materials to produce artworks. ‘I’ve always loved collecting,’ he explains. ‘As a teenager, I collected stamps, then I turned to carpets and paintings of the 18th and 19th centuries. It was my friend Dino Facchini who introduced me to Arte Povera and Arte Povera led me to contemporary art. I am attached to all the works that I have acquired but especially to a canvas by Manzoni that is always in my line of vision, in my office.’ From this office, Salamé oversees the day-to-day management of the Aïshti group, as well as developing and improving current and new business ventures. The brand was created from his vision of a lifestyle brand for the new millennium, and combines his love of travel and fashion with his knowledge of the country around him.

It hasn’t always been an easy road for the brand. Lebanon was, for a long time, a very unstable country for businesses to thrive in. This, however, has never hampered Salamé’s drive or that of his team, who ‘never stopped building, creating new shops and moving forward. The difficulty is this: to keep moving forward despite the obstacles – to go forward when everything is going backwards.’ Today, the Aïshti empire is paving the way for luxury fashion in Lebanon. Its multibrand stores bring together designer favourites under one roof, including Dior, Valentino, Marc Jacobs, Burberry, Miu Miu, Saint Laurent and Fendi. Prestigious international names are also represented in the label’s numerous monobrand boutiques, including Gucci, Ermenegildo Zegna, Cartier, Céline and Diesel. In 2015, the brand opened both the Aïshti Foundation and grand lifestyle department store Aïshti by the Sea in Beirut. The Aïshti Foundation, which took three years to build, showcases items from Salamé’s own 2,000-strong personal artwork collection.

These spectacular pieces sit alongside retail areas from some of Aïshti’s best-known highend names, in an extravagantly designed space by architect David Adjaye. This unique building marries two of Salamé’s great interests: ‘first, my passion for contemporary art and, second, the increasing proximity between the worlds of fashion and art.’ Stunning department store Aïshti by the Sea is a luxury lifestyle destination. Situated in Antelias, the store features five floors of carefully selected fashion and jewellery brands. The exterior, designed by renowned architectural practice Adjaye Associates, is just as spectacular. Understandably, Salamé cites both of these store openings among his personal career highlights. ‘Each new event we create is an exciting time. But if I had to choose my highlights, they would be the opening of the first store in Jal el Dib, and the inauguration of the Aïshti Foundation and Aïshti by the Sea, in the presence of the international press and the biggest names in the world of contemporary art.’ Aïshti continues to grow, as do Lebanon’s

‘Lebanon is a country like no other ... I find it inspiring’ – Tony Salamé cosmopolitan credentials. With its east-meetswest feel, the ever-changing city of Beirut is becoming a hub for luxury fashion. ‘Lebanon is a country like no other. Working here is a permanent challenge. Positive and negative energies collide. I find it inspiring,’ says Salamé. ‘In the next six months, we look forward to the development of Aïshti by the Sea, including new activities at the Urban Retreat spa and the opening of the rooftop pool. There will also be a new exhibition at the Aïshti Foundation in October and, in the next six years, the opening of a large new Aïshti shop, designed by Zaha Hadid, in downtown Beirut, facing the sea.’ With an already impressive heritage, Aïshti is definitely a brand to watch

The 25 individually furnished rooms are decorated in a range of colours and textiles, with a quirky yet elegant mix of retro furniture, antique prints and contemporary art.

On fine days, drinks and afternoon tea are served on the patio in the attractive tree-lined garden; there is also a cosy screening room, which is stocked with an impressive selection of films. Sítio de Valverde, the in-house restaurant and bar, is worth visiting for both great cocktails and the indulgent signature hamburger, topped with foie gras, grated cheese and homemade chutney. With only five guestrooms – or suites, in fact – and a secluded location in one of Paris’s best-known areas, Hôtel Particulier Montmartre is strictly for those in the know. The graceful residence was once home to the Hermès family and has a remarkable private garden, designed by the architect of the Jardin des Tuileries and spanning 900 square metres. Each suite boasts its own distinct style and atmosphere, from the contemporary monochrome of Poems & Hats to the baroque-cum-oriental fairy-tale style of Trees with Ears. Escoffier competition winner Thibaut Spiwack oversees the restaurant, which makes use of produce from the hotel’s own vegetable plot, hens and beehives.

SHAPING UP If statement accessories are your souvenir of choice, look no further than the distinctively shaped Polygonia Cage clutch from Beirut-born designer Nathalie Trad. The clutch, made of delicate copper wire and black shell, is more than just an accessory. Nathalie Trad’s designs feature asymmetric shapes and strong, architectural forms, and her eponymous brand’s exquisite clutches have become instantly recognisable since she launched her Save up to 8% by shopping tax free, see page 104

first collection in 2013. She has studied in both Paris and New York, and these western influences are clear to see – perfectly combined with the strong influence of a Middle Eastern aesthetic. The Polygonia Cage clutch’s original design makes it as much a work of art as an accessory; carry it and stand out from the crowd this season. dw Nathalie Trad Polygonia Cage clutch, 1,673,880 LBP, Rive Droite, Foch Street, Beirut Central District, +961 (0)1 976500, nathalietrad.com
